Yoichi Shimatsu, former editor of The Japan Times Weekly, is a science journalist who has conducted extensive radiation studies inside the Fukushima nuclear exclusion zone since April 2011. He shares a weekly online radio program at rense.com with Dana Durnford.
Dana Durnford, a former commercial diver who plies a rubber dinghy along the Canadian Pacific coast to study the effects of Fukushima radiation on marine life, has been arrested for making alleged death threats against a chemistry professor at University of Victoria in British Columbia. Mr. Durnford is facing trial on two counts of harassment related to his comments on video at his webpage, the Nuclear Proctologist. The video clips in question have been removed by YouTube at the request of unnamed complainants.
Whatever the substance those controversial statements, Canadians should realize his frustration arises in response to the official campaign of denial of Fukushima’s lethal effects. I have often enjoyed dialogues with Dana on the rense.com radio program on Monday nights, especially stories of his harrowing experiences at sea amid 15-foot swells. After a career of diving for shellfish, he developed a passion for coastal research two years ago after discovering that the once-lush seafloor and tidal pools of British Columbia have been denuded of vegetation and are now devoid of marine-animal life. A burning curiosity prompted him to obtain geiger counters, a microscope and underwater cameras to search for the root cause of this unprecedented natural catastrophe along North America’s Pacific coast………click for full article

Do scientists who sell out their ethics for pieces of silver when millions of civilian lives are at stake “deserve to be executed”? According to the highest standard of international law on criminal abuse by scientific researcher, the Nuremberg Doctors Trial, the answer is an emphatic affirmative: Scientists involved in genocide should be put to death. There are no ifs, buts or maybes about it. You, Professor Cullen and Dr. Buesseler, are guilty, and Dana Durnford is innocent. The defense rests.

This Week’s Prayer (in response to the terrorist attacks in France)

Heavenly King, O Comforter, the Spirit of Truth, who are in all places and fill all things; the treasury of blessings and giver of life: Come and abide in us, cleanse us from every stain, and save our souls, O Gracious Lord.

Father, You are our rock and our fortress. You are our deliverer, our strength, and our courage. In You we find refuge and comfort. We are in desperate need of that refuge, that comfort. Only a few days ago, the world was violently reminded that the dangers of Evil are very real, as pawns of the Evil One, carrying out the dictates of their false religion, created terror and chaos, bringing death and pain, in Paris, France. Hundreds of ordinary people, simply going about their everyday their lives, were brutally killed and injured by Muslims carrying out what they consider their religious duty. Families were ripped apart. Lives snuffed out. Many, many survivors will have to deal with their injuries, and their memories, for the rest of their lives. Many, many people will be dealing with the grief of loss of fathers, mothers, husbands, wives, sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, and friends.

Lord, remember those who dies, whowere murdered in those attacks, who have departed from this life. May that they have the hope of the resurrection. May that they found forgiveness of sins, eternal rest, the gift of Your kingdom, and the enjoyment of unending life with You.

Father of mercies and God of all comfort, come to the help of those who survived, who live on with the aftermath. Bring healing and mercy to those in need. Bring comfort and courage to those who lost loved ones. Take away fear, anxiety, and distress.  Lord, we knw that all trials of life are under Your care and that all things eventually work for the good of those who love You. Help the peole of Paris, and all those affected by this Evil, to face and endure all with faith, courage, and wisdom. Grant that this trial may bring people closer to You, for You are our rock and refuge, our comfort and hope, our delight and joy. Help us to trust in Your love and compassion.

Lord Jesus, in Your great mercy You prayed for the forgiveness of those who crucified You, and You taught us to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. Lord, I pray that You forgive those who committed these evil deeds, or in any way aided those who carried them out. Forgive those who plot future evil deeds in the name of their false religion. Bless them and guide them according to Your will, and most importantly save them from their false religion and the clutches of the Evil One. Show them the evil of their religion, and bring them to a true knowledge of You, to a point of true repentance for their sins, and to salvation in You. Lord, may Your forgiveness, goodness and love be revealed in all of us, to Your praise and glory.

Blessed is Your name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages.

It is in the Name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that we pray. Amen.

Pray for America

For Forgiveness and Repentance

Save and protect, O Lord, these United States of America and have mercy on us. As a nation, we have turned our backs on you and have sinned. We have allowed our God-given liberties to be taken away. We have allowed the epidemic of abortion to fester out of control. We have allowed prayer to be eliminated from our schools, and Your Word and commandments to be banned from our public squares. We have allowed Your place in our nation’s history to be erased from our textbooks and our minds. We have turned our backs on Your teachings. We no longer look to You and Your Word for our standards of right and wrong, replacing those absolute truths with the whim of our own opinions.  We have allowed decadence and depravity of all sorts to become public and commonplace. Common decency has become a thing of the past. We confess these and all our sins to You and ask forgiveness for ourselves and our nation. Bring us to a state of true repentance – a returning to You – as both individuals and as a nation. We confess Your lordship over every aspect of our lives and our nation. Help us to follow You once again. Restore your mercy and blessings to these United States of America, and re-establish a hedge of protection around us. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.

Against Demonic Influence

Almighty God, who delivered Your people from the bondage of the adversary, and through Your Son cast down Satan like lightning, deliver these United States of America also from every influence of the unclean spirits. Command Satan to depart far from these United States by the power of Your only begotten Son. Rescue this nation and its peple from demonic delusion and darkness. Fill the American people with the light of the Holy Spirit that we may be guarded against the snares of the crafty demons. Grant that angels always watch over our nation and lead us to the path of righteousness forever, to the honor of Your glorious name, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, now and ever and to the ages of ages. Amen.

For Our Government Officials

Save, O Lord, and have mercy upon all leaders, politicians, and civil authorities of these United States of America. I especially hold up to you President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden, Chief Justice John Roberts, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. I also pray for all the President’s Cabinet members and advisers,  the associate judges of the Supreme Court, all federal, state, and local judges, all members of the House of Representatives and Senate, as well as all governors, state legislators, and local authorities. Grant them wisdom in their duties and decisions, and have them serve Your Will in all things. Block all of their plots and schemes that run counter to Your good and perfect Will, or that threaten the inalienable rights You have given to us. (Additionally, please feel free to pray by name for any elected officials at any level, especially those with jurisdiction over your locality.)

For the Church in America

Remember, O Lord, Your Church, which You purchased with Your precious blood – protect it, strengthen it, and multiply it. Keep Your Church in peace, and bring to naught all plots and threats against Your Church. Have mercy, O Lord, upon the whole clergy of Your Church, and grant them the courage, wisdom, and strength needed to boldly preach and do Your Will during these perilous times.  (Please pray by name for your church, your pastor or priest, and fellow church members.)

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.
Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.

Additional Prayers

  • Save, O Lord, and have mercy upon the old, the young, the unborn, the needy and poor, the orphans and widows, the sick, the disabled, the oppressed and the imprisoned. Especially have mercy on those suffering for Your sake.
  • Grant, O Lord, blessings and mercies to all current and former members of our armed forces. Save them, protect them, and keep them safe.
  • Bless, O Lord, and have mercy on those who serve as police officers, fire fighters, paramedics, and other first responders.
  • Save, O Lord, and have mercy upon the State of Israel. Shield it with Your love, protect it, and let it know peace. Send Your light and wisdom to its leaders, and direct them with Your good counsel.

Special Prayer Request

Please pray for God’s mercy and healing on the five Americans being held hostage in Iran. Pray for them to have the courage and strength they need to survive their ordeal. Pray that their captivity quickly come to an end, and that they return safely home very soon. Pray also for God to provide comfort and mercy to their families and friends.

  • Siamak Namazi – an Iranian-American businessman arrested in late October while visiting relatives in Tehran. Details of his arrest are sketchy, and any charges have not been made public. However, it appears he was arrested by the intelligence division of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, and apparently is being held in Evin prison.
  • Saeed Abedini – the 35 year-old pastor, husband, and father of two, has been held prisoner in Iran since the summer of 2012. Abedini was visiting relatives and helping to establish an orphanage when he was arrested. His captors have recently subjected him to new harsh interrogations, including using a stun gun on him, and are threatening him with new charges and an even longer sentence. NOTE: Please also pray for his wife, Naghmeh Abedini, who is dealing with tremendous emotional stress and difficult family issues.
  • Jason Rezaian – a 39 year-old journalist working for the The Washington Post as their bureau chief in Tehran, Iran was arrested on charges of espionage and propaganda on July 22, 2014.
  • Amir Hekmati – the 32 year-old former US Marine was visiting his grandmother and other relatives in Iran when he was arrested in 2011.
  • Robert Levinson – now 67, went missing while in Iran in 2007. In 2010, his family received proof that he was still alive and being held prisoner. According to the AP, there is reason to believe that Levinson, a former FBI and DEA agent, was working undercover for the CIA at the time of his disappearance.

Why Patriots’ Prayers?

If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” –2 Chronicles 7:14 (NKJV)

The core idea of Patriots’ Prayers is to get Americans praying together, seeking forgiveness for our nation and turning back to God (repentance). Please pray these prayers throughout the week, and have others join you in praying.

I’m Back

Hey Folks, I am back. Kind of had some field time for work and didn’t really plan so well with putting up posts. There has been a lot going on and whatever. So at the last minute I slapped up 3 weeks of posts the best I could.

I appreciate your concern. On another note Wifeywas nice enough to drop by and keep thngs even keeled. At some point if she is still getting mentioned here she will need a new name. That is a problem for another day.

Anyway I am back and  generally well. There is a lot up in the air but I am OK. I am looking forward to getting things settled and moving forward. Nothing is certain but there are some exciting possibilities in the future.

Normal posting will come back tomorrow or so.

The BugOut Land Fantasy

Click here to view the original post.

The S hits the fan and you pack the family into your 4wd, drive an hour to your bugout location (BOL) just before the crazies overrun your suburban house.  The property isn’t much but it’s yours, 20 acres with some water and deep in the woods.  You then build a shelter, plant crops, establish a community and thrive as the pioneers once did.

Reality or Fantasy.

The real scenario (for most of us) looks more like this.

1- Property already occupied by armed locals and you are not invited.  But that land is yours you say, you bought it 2 years ago and have the title you say.  They say (while they point various guns in your direction) that possession is 9/10th’s  of the law, they know the local Sheriff and you can go pound sand (or get shot).

2- You get to the property and set up a tent (or maybe you have a small hunter’s cabin).  After two weeks of living in the woods the suck factor starts to set in, your kids are complaining and your wife is restless.  Nobody likes those stupid freeze dried meals and all your attempts at hunting and trapping have failed even though you brought a lot of books which were supposed to help you succeed.  Someone finally gets injured / sick and supplies are running short, this is not what it was supposed to be.  You need help and realize that this in fact is much harder than you thought it was going to be.  There is no internet, youtube, cell phone service and everyone hates every minute of every day.  Did I mention your dog got killed in the night by Coyotes?

3- You bought this land because it was very isolated and you finally made it there shortly after T-SHTF with all of your supplies in tow.  The only problem is, Cletus and the locals know that you just arrived with all of your supplies in tow as well.  Chances are Cletus and his 30 cousins will wait to take advantage of you and your family because they know every inch of the land and well….you have to sleep sometime.

SHTF / Bugout / Recreation Land: The dream for most of us

I’m an advocate for having some land to move to if things get nasty or simply to have for recreational and educational purposes in the meantime.  My wife and I are currently on the hunt for some of this land ourselves and after viewing some this week (which turned out to be unsuitable) I wanted to share some things which we came across and discussed.  We’ve been searching for a couple years now but have only recently gotten serious and started meeting with folks to turn our dream into a reality.  Just to frame this up, our goal is to purchase a piece of raw land which we can improve upon in stages, maybe even over years.  So if you are in that position or plan to be soon maybe this article will help you out.

Owner Financed vs Traditional Financing

I get it, buy everything in cash.  Well sometimes there are exceptions to that rule and in my opinion a nice land purchase which could be paid off in 10-15 years (or sooner) is one of those exceptions.  Maybe I could buy it in cash but I don’t want to drain my savings account, there are a multitude of reasons for wanting to finance but if you are thinking of going that route keep reading.

I’ve never really purchased land before so I wanted to check out my options and initially the idea of owner financing seemed pretty good.  By owners I mean the types of companies which purchase up large tracts of land and then split them up and sell them for a markup.  Nothing wrong with that, it’s a free country.  In researching some of these companies it appeared that they did their own financing with as little as 10% down.  On the surface it seemed good but if something seems too good to be true…

First of all the interest rate for the remainder of the purchase was very high, sometimes 10% or more.  Secondly in researching some of their properties there were very strict protective covenants in place which were obviously there to protect their interests.  These were very restrictive limiting just about every activity on the property, from what type of structures to logging timber to what type of recreational or commercial activities one could participate in.  No thanks.

I then looked at traditional financing, not through a bank but rather an organization called Farm Credit.  In speaking with their loan officer I would be able to put down 15% of the price, finance the rest at a reasonable rate for the next 10-15 years.  Additionally the property would be mine with no protective covenants, I would be much more “free” to do whatever I wanted as long as it was in line with the local ordinances / law.  A much better option in my opinion but it did required going through the more aggressive loan approval process: similar to buying a house.  In contrast the owner financed process was easier than getting a TV from Rent A Center (at least that’s what they told me).

Lesson Learned:  Do your research, make phone calls, ask questions.

The land we looked at was 1.5 hours away (75 miles via back roads) from our home which doesn’t sound that bad.  Heck I drive 1.5 hours (or more) one way for meetings throughout the week, what’s 1.5 hours to a piece of land.  Actually, it kind of sucks.  The distance involved means weekend visits probably will be intermittent and weekday visits will be just about non-existent.  Also the chance to get to know the neighbors will be tough since we would be spending much less time at the property which is not an optimal scenario.  Lastly and worst case scenario, 75 miles on foot after SHTF means quite a bit of walking and who knows if we would even make it there after passing through all of the small towns or privately owned land along the way.

Lesson Learned:  Get something closer, preferably 30 minutes or less drive.

For us the plan is to secure a piece of land which has a minimum of 10 acres, maybe 20-30.  We could get a small camper to tow to the land for the first year or two where we would make improvements and enjoy it (hiking, shooting, burning stuff in large piles and consuming adult beverages).  During this time we could look at building a permanent structure and maybe further down the road bringing utilities online and an ever larger structure which we could occupy full time.

When we were out at the property today we knew that it would not fit our purpose, although it had plenty of woods and was isolated the terrain was very unforgiving which meant the opportunity to build was restricted.  The only place which might have been acceptable to build looked as if it could be a flood risk as it was close to a creek.  Not a good fit.

Lesson Learned:  Topo maps, google images and pictures are great but you need to WALK the piece of land before making a decision.  This piece looked great until we got there and then it was like….um….no.

Make no mistake we were in God’s country out there.  American and Confederate Flags out in yards with mobile homes (broken down vehicles and tractors too) and pole barns dotting the landscape.  I wondered if this was how my grandparents grew up in the hills of West Virginia and in some aspect I felt a little sad that just two generations later I was so far removed from that lifestyle.  These were hard working folks scraping by to making a living, far removed from the mostly stupid problems that most of us stress about every day.  For me it would be important to get to know a few neighbors surrounding the property, this for the simple reason that I would not always be there and I’d want an ally near my land.  This would would be very difficult if we were so far away from the property, once again distance factored in.

Lesson Learned:  The land itself is just ONE component of the overall strategy.  The people / neighbors are a massive consideration when going through an exercise like this.  If one thinks he/she will simply circle the wagons and rely on the AR15 out there in God’s country, one will have another thing coming (many many other things).

15 to 20 minutes before we got to the property we lost all cell phone signal, both on AT&T and Verizon.  This is a big deal for us because while it’s nice to get off the grid one still needs reach back capabilities when it’s NOT SHTF and something happens.  Maybe our daughter needs to reach us while we are away for the weekend because she is in trouble. Then what?  Maybe someone gets injured and needs medical attention ASAP, how long would it take to walk to a home with a land line?  Yes I realize there are gadgets out there that do not rely on cell phone towers but this was a consideration which we had a tough time budging on.  As a matter of fact we did get into a tough spot with our vehicle at one point which had me wondering, if I can’t call anyone should I just start walking down the gravel road until I come to a house and then knock on the door?  How would that work out?

Lesson Learned:  For us, having commo capabilities is a big deal.  While it might not matter after SHTF it does matter now.  Best bet is to get out there and check out the land, see if you have connectivity.

Bottom Line

This whole thing has been a learning experience for us, we’ve been researching this for years and finally started to make moves in the last few months.  What we have found is that things are not always as they seem and plans made on the couch do not always reflect reality when actually out standing on the ground.  While the land we looked at was indeed isolated and in a decent area it would be useless to us, especially after T-SHTF.  It’s too far away, it would be too hard to build anything and we just aren’t equipped to make it suitable for family living.  The pioneers were able to live the hard scrabble life back in the day but let’s not kid ourselves…pioneers most of us are not these days.  Plus I do enjoy some creature comforts every now and then.

Going Off-Grid

We are very close to going totally off-grid. Have a piece of land lined up , a camper, and a truck. We will be all set. We have been looking for Solar Power items online and are going to have to get a Composting Toilet. We will be ok with that. The place we are looking at has awesome cell phone service and we will have the solar power for lights etc. I can’t wait! In my mind we are already moved. It will be so great to live off the land and be free of utilities. Have a home where we can have freedom!

Sunday Prepper Bible Study- Pray for Paris and America

Click here to view the original post.

The word of the LORD came again unto me, saying,  Son of man, there were two women, the daughters of one mother: And they committed whoredoms in Egypt; they committed whoredoms in their youth: there were their breasts pressed, and there they bruised the teats of their virginity. And the names of them were Aholah the elder, and Aholibah her sister: and they were mine, and they bare sons and daughters. Thus were their names; Samaria is Aholah, and Jerusalem Aholibah. And Aholah played the harlot when she was mine; and she doted on her lovers, on the Assyrians her neighbours, Which were clothed with blue, captains and rulers, all of them desirable young men, horsemen riding upon horses.  Thus she committed her whoredoms with them, with all them that were the chosen men of Assyria, and with all on whom she doted: with all their idols she defiled herself. Neither left she her whoredoms brought from Egypt: for in her youth they lay with her, and they bruised the breasts of her virginity, and poured their whoredom upon her. Wherefore I have delivered her into the hand of her lovers, into the hand of the Assyrians, upon whom she doted. These discovered her nakedness: they took her sons and her daughters, and slew her with the sword: and she became famous among women; for they had executed judgment upon her. And when her sister Aholibah saw this, she was more corrupt in her inordinate love than she, and in her whoredoms more than her sister in her whoredoms.

Ezikiel 23:1-11

First and foremost, our prayers go out to the families of the victims and the injured who are fighting for their lives in Paris after Friday night’s attacks. We pray that they will turn their hearts to God for peace and healing.

Today’s passage from Ezekiel is an allegory of the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah. After  the split, idol worship was quickly instituted in the capitol of the northern kingdom, Samaria, in an attempt to keep the residents from visiting the southern kingdom to worship in Jerusalem. But as we read in today’s passage, it didn’t take Judah long to follow in her footsteps.

Even when the people of the southern kingdom witnessed the horrific judgments being poured out on Israel and Samaria at the hands of the Assyrians, they refused to turn back to God and repent. Instead, Judah and Jerusalem became more corrupt and more of a whore than the northern kingdom of Israel. And, of course, students of history know that Jerusalem was eventually besieged, pummeled, looted and burned to the ground by Babylon.

Europe has taken a sort of big-sister lead into the trend of Postmodern Humanism which basically dissolved the need of any god, be they false or be they true. Once filled with devout Christians, the ornate cathedrals of Europe are now only monuments to a time gone by, when people sought the mercy, favor, and protection of a loving God.

Just as Aholibah couldn’t wait to follow in her sisters footsteps, so America is quickly chasing after Europe’s brand of anti-theism, as we evict God from our schools, laws, daily lives, and entertainment; except when we need a good curse word.

The Assyrians, to  whom God delivered the northern kingdom, were geographically located in that same northern section of Iraq, where we find ISIS today. Friday night, we saw one of the larges cities in the “old country” or America’s older sister delivered into the hands of the same people.

Will we, as a country, learn the hard lesson from our older sister or will we be doomed to repeat it? Pray that America will learn the lesson the easy way. Pray that we will repent and turn back to God above all else. Then, pray that we will learn the hard lesson that if you leave your front door open all night, you should expect murderers to come in and do what they do best. Also pray that we learn the hard lesson of gun control. There are few places on the planet that have more strict gun control laws than Paris, yet the murderers don’t pay attention to gun control laws.

In the anticipation that, like Jerusalem, America isn’t likely to learn the easy way, pray about moving your family out of the city. If you have to be in a particular area for work, consider the trade off of living on the outskirts of town. While you’ll have a longer commute, you’ll probably get more yard and more space for your money, and your family will definitely be safer. You can’t put a price on that.

Come back every Sunday for a new Prepper Bible Study! The most important prep of all is knowing GOD. Jesus said “what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world yet loses his own soul?” Prepper translation: “What good will it do you to survive the coming economic collapse, nuclear war or even a zombie apocalypse if you don’t know you will go to heaven when you die.” A recent study found that 10 out of 10 people die! On that day we will meet our Maker. It only makes sense to be prepared for that day. Click here to learn more about knowing GOD.

Have a blessed day and happy prepping!

My prayers go out to the people of France. I pray that they come together in solidarity to fight the evil which exists not only there but around the world. I hope the french government will step up to the plate and take the appropriate action to protect their citizens and to hold accountable those responsible.

I also hope the world learns from this tragedy.

France recently took in 30,000 refugees from Syria. The majority of these refuges are able-bodied men. Much of Europe and the United Stats have agreed to take in these refugees although many have warned that ISIS will plant cells using this refugee movement. Significant problems are being experienced throughout Europe as these refugees dissipate into towns and cities bringing violence with them.

Understand this: They are not arriving with intentions of assimilating respectfully into their new country.

Take a good, hard look at what is happening in Paris and the rest of Europe. Get ready folks because they are coming to the United States and those ISIS implants will join their brothers who are already here.

Stay frosty my friends.

Fool-Proof Tips For Successful Winter Gardening

Fool-Proof Tips For Successful Winter Gardening

When you look at vegetables in the grocery store in the heart of the winter, they may look a bit tired and lacking in color. Wouldn’t it be great to have fresh vegetables all winter long? It doesn’t have to be a dream — it is possible. During winter, vegetables can and do grow – slowly — but they do grow.

Why Winter Garden?

One benefit of winter gardening is not having to weed as much as you do in the summer. There are fewer pests, fewer weeds and you don’t have to water much, if you need to water at all. Winter temperatures actually “store” or preserve the vegetables for you.

Winter gardening is one way to ensure you continue to get your organic, healthy dose of fresh vegetables year-round.

Options for Winter Gardening

There are two main ways of winter gardening. You can either grow crops to harvest during the autumn or winter, or you can plant crops to overwinter and harvest early in the spring. If you aren’t so keen on growing crops for winter, you can always prepare your garden for spring. You can decide on the mulch to use and the surface you want, and mark and lay paths or add new garden beds.

There are a few planting options. Whichever one you choose will depend on your location, the severity of your winter and what vegetables you want to grow.

The Best Source For Non-GMO Heirloom Seeds Is Right Here …

Three options are cloches, cold frames and greenhouses. When you use a greenhouse (also called a hothouse, potting shed, nursery and glasshouse,) make sure you put it in a clear spot to maximize sun exposure. Greenhouses are the best way to go if you want to garden year-round. They use solar radiation to keep a warm atmosphere in the building so plants can grow.

Garden centers usually have simple kits to build your own style of green house, and often they are inexpensive for a small one. There are also two particular kinds of greenhouses to mention, as each has their own contributions to winter gardening. One is a cold house; the other is cool house. Cold houses allow for warm temperatures and protection from outside elements, but can still have temperatures drop to below freezing inside. Cool houses do the same thing, but keep temperatures around 40 degrees Fahrenheit. (A cool house requires a heating source.) Growing seasons last longer in cool houses.

Polytunnels are another useful tool to help winter gardening. They are great to use if you live in an area with strong winds. Polytunnels protect against powerful winds and heavy rain. They don’t really protect too much against frost, so be aware of that. Polytunnels also protect against hungry creatures like birds, who will want a bite of your crops.

Whatever you choose, consider starting the seeds inside your home. Many times, growing your own seedlings results in stronger plants than store-bought seedlings. You can even collect seeds from your own plants. Once the seedlings are big enough, they should spend some time in a cold frame to harden them up before planting outside.

Potted plants need care, as their root systems are vulnerable to cold. Move potted plants indoors to a greenhouse or at least close to your house for some protection.

Hardy Winter Vegetables

Herbs do well in the winter, especially with some protection or cover. If you are looking for vegetables, the list of hardy vegetables is long and varied. Here are a few:

  • Spinach: popular, tasty and easy to grow.
  • Mustard: another great crop for winter.
  • Cabbage: birds love this plant, so it may need some protection. Plant 12 inches apart and put soil around the stems to protect against the cold temperatures.
  • Lettuce: can be picked throughout the winter. Once the plant is established, it may be able to grow unprotected.
  • Beets: considered a root crop, beets can take around 90 days to mature.
  • Spring onions: these vegetables store well after harvesting. Harvest in the early spring.
  • Kale: dark green and leafy, you can get several winter harvests from one plant.
  • Carrots: fast-growing. Can be sown in November in greenhouses or outdoors in late July.
  • Potatoes: plant in August, keep soil loose.
  • Garlic: easy to grow. Plant 2.5 inches deep and one foot apart. There are plenty of varieties.

Protecting your plants is half the battle. Always add some mulch after planting for the winter, and plan to harvest during the warmest hours of the day.

Winter doesn’t need to be gloomy or boring. Plan your gardening for tasty, year-long enjoyment.

The (not so) Lowly Boot

Click here to view the original post.

I can still see George Washington pictured astride a gallant white horse. Perched on the generals head crouches the tri corner hat. A dark coat with white piping accented by white breeches is finished off with shining leather boots.

But let your gaze fall lower, and beneath the general and the wafts of breaths from the steeds flared nostrils, is the scarlet trace of blood on the newly fallen snow. For the Continental army has fallen in short supply of shoes.

Fast forward almost a hundred years and a new set of armies rip up the young country. A new southern general rides atop a white horse. This general has a similar problem, once again the army needs shoes. In Southern Pennsylvania, two great armies clash and the Southern hope begins to fall.

Perhaps if you would stretch the facts far enough, one could say the Civil War was won because of sore feet!

Probably most of us who travel in the outdoors have heard of trench foot, that awful bane to the soldiers who failed to mother their feet.

As odd as it sounds, one could say if your feet aren’t happy, you aren’t going anywhere or at least no where fast.

Capitalizing on this truth, businesses abound that offer the glib outdoorsman high priced choices. Glorified sneakers cost you more than a green Franklin. Boots zip, stretch, gel, hook, and shine; but do they work?

Today I propose a trip into the low underworld of the boot!

The Hobnail. – the Old Trooper

survival bootsIn WWII the German soldier wore the hobnail boot for its tough durability. For years, boots were favored for their ability to be worn not for a season of style, but for years. The nails gave extra endurance.

Russia also supplied hobnailed style boots, especially to officers. I came across these boots on eBay for about forty dollars. They seem to be made of thick leather. They are probably 70’s Russian boots, but they still bear a hint of the past. I cringe at the thought of marring their bright sheen with snarling thorns or the fists of craggy rocks.

They remind me of a day when soldiers looked like a crisp, decisive professional. Close cut boots, tight jacket, and a thick Sam Brown style belt cut a smart looking officer. But now comfort has replaced such lofty ideals.

 Perhaps for the better.

The Hobnobber- Rich trash

boot2If you are serious about your gear, you early on become a tester.

Some years ago, I bought these Bates boots for over a hundred dollars. They were on the store’s free points or I would be even more bitter about the deal. I eagerly took them to work and began breaking them in.

In a short time, it seemed the tread began to wear and the rubber split. Eventually the side split opened, and I became Doc Backstuffin fixing the rip with a liberal amount of superglue. The superglue seemed to melt the fibers back in place.

I still use the boots, even though the toes are horribly scuffed and they look war battered. Some how I guess, I expected more.

What I’m trying to tell you is- don’t waste money on names if you can get a good deal on a real boot.

Hobo Boot-eBay bounty

boot3On another eBay scavenger hunt, I found a “lot” of ten boots. Some I’ve sold. But this pair, I kept. Seemingly military issue, these boots have marched miles over my concrete warehouse floor.

These boots have kicked pallets and thudded against metal carts. They have pivoted on the wood floors of semi’s and squashed along in the rain. And after all that, they hardly look different then when I first saw them.

I don’t know what the army did, but a $5 boot has lasted far better for me than a $120 one. I understand that when those leaflets come in the mail about a break thru in foot technology some just feel the addiction to buy, but for me I’ve learned the hard way, you have to be skeptical of what you put your feet in.

Heat or Mud- The Light Giant

boot4Another $5 boot I found was this jungle style boot. Already dog eared when it reached my abode, I eventually gave it a try. I was surprised how comfortable it was and especially by its lightness.

So often as survivalists we load ourselves with abundant gear. But this boot seemed just the right balance of tough but light.

My pair desperately needs replaced, but for a $5 test run, now I am willing to buy a decent pair some day.

The advantage of these style boots is their mesh sides. Provided for the military fighting in Vietnam, they were designed so the inevitable rush of water would drain out. These boots are on purpose not waterproof. Their sides are still thick enough to offer fair protection for a long hike.

The High Roller-Mickey Mouse himself!

Sadly, I can give you no picture of the boot that has won my enduring admiration.

Years ago at a yard sale I spotted the pair. For $0.25, I picked them up. Designed for the air force, these boots are tough rubber with the inside providing a soft gel like feel. I suppose one could label them advanced muck boots. At surplus stores these boots run from $50 to perhaps $100.

In my eyes, these are the king of hiking boots. Although at first, rather awkward, they swath one’s feet in a tomb of comfort. After several miles and no blisters, the boot becomes more than a purchase. but a dear friend. You don’t have to baby these boots, they will send you safely over rocks and jagged protrusions.

These boots gained the nomenclature “Mickey Mouse boots” because of their obvious blob style. But ugly or not, they really spoil your feet.

My pair met its demise when a sewer line had to be dug up. At a quarter, these became the martyr for the job. With refuse caked to their sides, I regretfully disposed of such a loyal friend. Now I dream of finding another pair, perhaps my dream will one day materialize.

I used to wonder why a UK based survival magazine always had monthly articles showcasing new boots. Somehow feet gear seemed boring and monotonous. But I have a new appreciation now of how important the choice of a boot is.

Find what’s right for you. Try different options and don’t be afraid to come up with a bizarre favorite. Someday you might take a wrong turn and your feet might have to march for hours. It is a good idea to pick out good footwear now, rather than to have it fail when you need it the most!

off-grid in North Devon - animals make the money while you sleep

Friends with benefits – Simon and his menagerie

Channel 5, the smallest UK channel, is featuring a British off-grid family next month as part of a series which usually visits pioneers around the world.

The show will feature Simon Dawson and his wife Debbie at their smallholding in Barbrook, near Lynton, Devon for a fly-on-the-wall documentary.

Speaking about the experience, former journalist Simon said:: “It was rather surreal. There were times that we were lying in bed and texting people saying ‘guess who we have sleeping on our sofa’.

Throughout the seven-day adventure,  the Dawsons were followed by a nine-strong camera crew, who followed their every move .

Although before filming began Simon said he was not daunted by the prospect on being constantly on camera, he said it took “a bit of getting used to”.

“I didn’t realise it would be all day, every day,” he said.

“Even when we were driving we were still being filmed.

“But after about day three you get used to it.

“It’s really weird how they just became a part of life.

“It was even weirder when they went and I kept wondering ‘where is everyone?’.”

Viewers will also meet the menagerie of animals living in and around their house – small chicks in the kitchen, a beautiful Great Dane on the sofas, pigs, chickens, horses and geese on the land. The 12 beautiful black Berkshire piglets born last year will have grown up by now but will still provide plenty of comic moments.

Have a read about Simon’s antics on his own blog and look out for his next article about dairy farming for the first time in Devon Life soon.

As part of Ben Fogle’s series of New Lives, the episode will air on December 3 at 9pm.

Can We as Individuals Learn From the Terrorist Attacks in Paris?

Click here to view the original post.

terrorist attacksThis morning some of my friends ran a tabletop exercise based on yesterday’s terrorist attacks in France.  First, I want to give my condolences and prayers to all of the victims their families and loved ones.

Second, I want to mention that I am only using a portion of what my friends did.  Some of the intelligence that they used in the exercise has already changed.  For instance, the latest information shows that a Syrian passport was found by one of the terrorists.  Information from Greece indicates that he only arrived in Europe about one month ago.  Now over the next few days more information about the terrorist attacks will surface.  But at the same time, much will be hidden.  We as individuals may never know all the information.

So what does this mean to us?  Can we learn from these terrorist attacks?  I think the answer is a definite, yes.  The following comments came out of their exercise.

Tabletop Exercise:

Reality check. How many here watching the news reports of the Paris have thought about personal/family protection?

  • First thoughts probably about packing a concealed weapon. Not altogether bad thing, BUT…
  • Now, honestly… think about it… How many brushed up on Trauma management and made sure they had some trauma supplies?
  • Google blast injuries? You walk up on the cafe after being rocked by the blast wave from just around the corner of a building, are you comfortable that you would know what to do and start giving aid?
  • Everyone always envisions themselves as the Hero shooter to take down the bad guy and preps for such…
  • Many don’t prep for trauma management where they may have a daily chance to actually apply their skills in such a random incident as a vehicle accident or a local situation.
  • When was your last first aid class?
  • When was the Last time you increased your level of medical training?
  • Motivation moment. You might be the first one to show up on a lonely road where one of my loved ones is injured…. could you do more than call 911?

(I suggest that you sit down with your family and friends and study how you would react if such a situation were to occur in your neighborhood.  Have you talked to your children about what to do if faced with this type of event.  Howard)

Paris attack sitrep:

Paris has been rocked by a multiple, coordinated terrorist attacks, leaving at least 140 people dead. President François Hollande has declared a state of emergency and ordered national borders closed.  Police have reported four of the hostage takers killed as elite units brought their operation at the Bataclan concert hall to an end.  Paris residents have been asked to stay indoors as about 1,500 military personnel have been deployed across the city.

  • Terror operations in Paris were apparently intended to fracture French society.
  • The terrorists want to provoke inter-religion frictions.
  • France will have to work hard to make sure they don’t allow them this success.
  • There will be little doubt that so-called Islamic State is top of the list of suspects.
  • France has the highest Muslim population in Europe.
  • Many peaceful and patriotic followers of the faith live in the poorest banlieues of the nation’s cities. Some feel left out of the wider French social structures even though the country has, for years, followed a policy of assimilation to try to reinforce the notion of ‘Frenchness’ among all its citizens.

As you can see my friends spent some time examining the terrorist attacks that occurred in Paris.  Now I have not included all the information that they sent me, because some of this has already changed and will continue to change in the future.

Now I am not going to spend a lot of time speculating on why or how, or who was involved.  There are plenty of other people who are better qualified than me to do this.  What I am going to do, is use the terrorist attacks as a training aid. Learn what we can to help keep our families and friends safe when terrorist attacks occurs here.

Corruption and Greed Pervade the Nuclear Industry and It’s Captured “Regulators”

In 2009, both Unit 2 RSGs were installed, tested, officially accepted and brought online. SCE was so pleased with how well their new RSG design performed that they immediately started talking about extending their lifespan to 60 years or more. Slight manufacturing changes were made when both of Unit 3 RSGs were manufactured. SCE believed these changes made them “better” (than Unit 2’s RSG’s) at converting reactor heat into the steam that drives the turbines connected to the generators that produce electricity.

SCE also installed new turbines, with newly designed higher efficiency TURBINE blades, to take advantage of the expected higher steam output of the new “like for like” RSGs. In 2010, Unit 3 RSG’s were installed, tested, officially accepted and brought online.

SCE issued a press release on October 8, 2010, which stated, “We decided to replace the San Onofre plant’s steam generators when a cost-benefit assessment revealed the plan could save customers approximately $1 billion during the plant’s current license period, which runs through 2022, when power generated by the plant was compared to the likely cost of replacement power,” said SCE Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Alan Fohrer

An AAR from Rural Buddy Team Essentials Course (Bushbastard 1)

BB1 Nov7-8,1

This review of the November 7-8 class was sent to me this past week. I’m not big on the whole “Public AAR” thing (we do it in the class and that’s enough for me), because I don’t ever want to sound like it’s a second hand “Tooting my own horn” thing (not that anyone else who posts them is doing that). Concerned American at WRSA had told me a little while back that I needed to start posting them more, so here goes.

Mason Dixon Tactical:

Regional Security Forces Small Unit Tactics and Techniques Series, Class 1:

(Class 1 is the same as RBTEC, AKA “Bushbastard 1”)

Duration::2 days

Exercise Date:

November 7, 2015: Classroom & field Instructions, Multiple Patrol and Ambush Exercises

November 8, 2015: Classroom & field Instructions, Patrol and Live Fire Exercise

The Bushbastard Course #1

Instructor: JC Dodge

Individual and Buddy Team Movements, Camouflage and Concealment.  Fire Team and Detachment formation familiarization, and Neighborhood Protection Team Formations and Movement:

Day 1

The Beginning rollcall at 0800 began with a safety brief, concerning weapons, ammo (blank and live), injury response, followed by the planned timeline. Following this, classroom instruction on individual movement techniques; low crawl, high crawl, rush, and camouflage face cover, patrol and ambush began.

BB1 Nov7-8,6

Practicing the “Low Crawl”

Low Crawl:

I chose to wear my boonies-cap that morning it provides side head and ear cover during the low crawl, however upon lifting my head at the end of each crawl leg, I noticed that the cap severely restricted my visibility, therefore the boonies-cap has been stricken from my uniform.

BB1 Nov7-8,5

Practicing the “High Crawl”

High Crawl:

Previously I had been instructed to cradle my rifle while high crawling, I have used this technique at a previous FTX during a force on force exercise while wearing a chest-rig, I found it difficult to move and I didn’t like the feeling of rifle cradled in my arms. During the exercise I was instructed to use a slightly different technique by holding the pistol grip of my rifle in my strong hand while engaged in the high crawl. This was a more effective way while crawling, the rifle felt secure while moving, and with my hand already on the pistol grip it would be much faster in the transition to aiming down range.

BB1 Nov7-8,4

Practicing the “Rush”

Getting up moving suddenly dropping to the prone position it sounds relatively easy. The instruction was to keep the pistol grip in your strong hand rolling the rifle 90 degrees inward and landing you and the rifle approximately at the same time into the prone position and immediately aiming down range. Then reversing the drill (breaking contact) while maintaining safety, (trigger safety and muzzle safety discipline), sliding like Pete Rose plaining a baseball game is not the desired technique during this exercise, however maintaining control and muzzle discipline dropping to the knees and reversing your line of sight is, in addition to the technique a much need upgrade would be the addition of knee pads to my uniform.

Camouflaging Face Cover:

The instruction is to remove facial features, by highlighting the shadows of the eyes (lighter colors) and dulling the shine, nose, cheeks, ears (darker colors); remembering a previous FTX I dulled the shine and increased the shadow around my eyes. I’m looking forward to applying the camouflage correctly.

BB1 Nov7-8,8

Buddy Teams practicing movement through the woods.

Buddy Team Movement:

Maintaining an approximate 5 meter spread in a staggered formation or Ranger file dictated by terrain.

“Contact” Instruction

Contact is made, “Distance, Direction, Description” is given by the “In contact” team member. The action is chosen (“Assault” or “Break Contact”). The #2 Buddy starts moving while his buddy suppresses the target with his weapon, all the while using the verbal commands, “Move” or “Moving” and mentally repeating the mantra “I’m up he see me I’m down” (to give a time scale for how long you’ve been up) as you bound forward in the direction of the target using any of the three individual movement techniques (IMT) that is chosen based on the terrain, visibility, cover and concealment available and the speed needed.

BB1 Nov7-8,10

Practicing “Bounding” as part of a Buddy Team

The Buddy who called “Contact” immediately drops to kneeling or prone based on terrain and target visibility, firing weapon 3-5 rounds and sounding off with “3D’s” followed by the action to be taken while continuing fire suppression. They command #2 Buddy to “Move”, #2 Buddy returns verbal response of “Moving”, the buddy then bounds to his firing position and fires 2-3 rounds before giving the buddy an action command of “Move”. Repeating this bounding you may encounter weapon malfunctions and reloading, in which anything critical during the movement must be communicated to your buddy. All the while maintaining “Muzzle”, “Trigger” and “Safety” disciplines.

BB1 Nov7-8,20

Daytime Patrol Ambush Simulated firefight:

We patrolled in a staggered Buddy Team, walking into the ambush, then using the verbal commands “Contact!”, and describing the Distance, Direction, and Description to/of the target, the buddy may or may not have a line of sight on the target (I found it difficult to overcome the desire not to move), however the buddy may see a target (#^) degree security) which is a greater threat which needs to be suppressed at once (and communicates that), such as a target to you buddy’s immediate left or right. Tracking moving targets while under simulated fire (blanks), proved to be stressful in and of itself when there was one target and now there is three. I definitely would like to repeat that simulation multiple times.

BB1 Nov7-8,9

Daylight ambush lane

Nighttime Patrol Ambush Simulated firefight:

Patrolling in a staggered 4 man patrol with 2 Buddy teams, walking into the ambush using the verbal commands “Contact”, then communicating the “Distance, Direction, and Description” for suppression of the target. Movement feels much easier under the concealment of darkness. An important action learned was the keeping the distance of buddies only double arms length apart, and not accidentally dropping directly behind you buddy (when it’s your buddy team’s turn to lay down suppressive fire), thus impeding your ability to suppress targets. During the exercise as a measure of correction during our last bound my buddy kept his hand on the back of my shoulder, that enabled my ability of knowing his exact location, therefore when we went prone we were in the correct position to begin suppressive fire while the other Buddy team bounded.

Day 2

The Beginning rollcall at 0800 classroom instructions on neighborhood protection team formations and movement:

BB1 Nov7-8,2

“White board” instruction time.

Neighborhood Protection Team:

Distance 5-10 meters consisting of three (2) man buddy teams providing 360 security, the team consist of a Point Man, Team Leader, Heavy Gunner, Commo, Medic, Assistance Team Leader, each team member will maintain an overlapping lanes of security, I have been instructed in this formation before (from former students of MDT), however four new movement techniques I learned at this class.

NPT Team Diamond

NPT “Diamond” formation

Fire Team/Squad Movement Techniques:

(2) NPT (Neighborhood Protection Team) Distance between 10-20 meters not likely to make contact (control more closer together) (depression less closer together) (relative speed is fast and contact is not likely) (individual spread is closer together during reduced visibility) First NPT travels in a wedge formation with heavy side nearest to likely contact this is flexible to adjust to changing conditions, Second Team always provides rear security (in a “Diamond” formation). Always staggering (different sides) the personal from two teams will eliminate having the Heavy Gunner, Team Leader, Commo, and Medic on the same side of the overall formations.

Traveling Overwatch:

(2) NPT Distance between 10-50 meters likely to make contact, (less overall control due to being further apart and speed is slower due to possible contact). First NPT travels in a wedge formation with heavy side most likely to make contact this is flexible to adjust to changing conditions, Second Team provides rear security. Always staggering (different sides) the personal from two teams will eliminate having the Heavy Gunner, Team Leader, Commo, and Medic on the same side of the overall formations.

Bounding Overwatch:

(2) NPT Distance between individuals 10 meters Distance between teams up to 150 meters because contact is expected, and spread is dictated by terrain and visibility (speed is slower, and teams are bounding and expected to make contact).

Live Fire Exercise:

BB1 Nov7-8,18

Dry fire “Assault” Bound

BB1 Nov7-8,17

Live fire “Assault” support by fire position

Action initiated by the sound of “Incoming Fire” (blanks). Verbal commands given by lead Buddy, “Contact!”, then the distance, direction, description to/of the target, followed by “Assault”. Buddy #1 immediately called “Contact!” and immediately drops to a kneeling or prone based on terrain, firing weapon 3-5 rounds “DDD” followed by continued fire suppression. Buddy #2 gives verbal command of “Moving” and the direction of movement. Using verbal commands, “Move” or “Moving” and using the mantra (I’m up he see me I’m down) as you bound forward in the direction of the target using any of the three IMT’s based on terrain cover and concealment and speed needed. Before the class I had never received instruction on the Ranger File movement techniques; I also received a more in-depth instruction on suppression of the target before giving action commands. Upon receiving instructions from the Instructor, the command is given to “Break Contact!”, and the process is revered to get away from the threat.

BB1 Nov7-8,21

Dry fire “Break Contact” Bound by the only female in the class.

Areas of improvement:

First and foremost is PT, I have got to drag myself to the gym, I will do all the manual work from digging ditches, cutting down trees by hand, tearing off roofs, It may sound strange but I love bull work, but I have got to change my mind set of not liking the gym to just push something for the sake of pushing it.

BB1 Nov7-8,23

Second Improvement in everything I took part in “practice, practice, practice”, until its perfect then “perfect practice, perfect practice”, on all drills, and upgrades to the load bearing equipment. My verbal commands need to be louder, clearer, and with less verbiage example “Loading” vs “Reloading” (brevity).

BB1 Nov7-8,14

Live fire “Bunker” target

The strength of attending this course will not only provide you the necessary training on the building block of individual movements, formations and patrols, the fact is you will be instructed by a real life experienced combat veteran. His professionalism is unmatched and each member attending the course will find the same level of attentiveness regardless of their experience. You will also experience an instructor who does not single you out but rather encourages you and makes corrections by using positive reinforcement. During classroom instruction you will find the instructions easy to follow, all question will be addressed in a clear concise manor. The pace of your training depends upon experience; nothing is rushed leaving the individual feeling uncomfortable or unsure of the instructions whether it’s in the classroom or in the field.

I loved the class, my instructor is a great guy that I have the utmost respect for I’m thankful for his time, dedication, and instructions on training and providing a great location to train.

Personally I thought the price was right I certainly got more training than I expected.

What would you do if the power grid went down and never came back up?  One of these days, and it could be a lot sooner than most people think, we will all wake up in a country without electricity.  And considering how utterly dependent we have become on technology, that is a very frightening scenario to consider.  How would Americans react if nothing worked?  Just imagine a world where everything electronic is dead.  I am talking about lights, cell phones, computers, televisions, ATMs, heating and cooling systems, credit card readers, gas pumps, cash registers, refrigerators, hospital equipment etc.  When the power goes out for a few hours, that can be a major inconvenience, but what if it went out all over the nation and it didn’t come back on for months or even years?  This is one of the greatest potential threats that the United States is facing, and yet very few people are even talking about it.

An electromagnetic pulse attack could potentially send our nation back to the 1800s in a single moment, but very few of us are equipped to handle life without technology.  Tech guru John McAfee recently wrote an article in which he expressed his belief that 90 percent of the population would be dead within 2 years of such an attack

RELATED : EMP Survival: An Essential List For Your Car’s Top Systems

Experts agree that an all out cyber attack, beginning with an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) attack on our electronic infrastructure, would wipe out 90% of the human population of this country within two years of the attack. That means the death of 270 million people within 24 months after the attack.

You may think that is an unreasonably high estimate, but it turns out that it is the exact same number that the EMP Commission used in their report to Congressback in 2008

What would a successful EMP attack look like? The EMP Commission, in 2008, estimated that within 12 months of a nationwide blackout, up to 90% of the U.S. population could possibly perish from starvation, disease and societal breakdown.

In 2009 the congressional Commission on the Strategic Posture of the United States, whose co-chairmen were former Secretaries of Defense William Perry and James Schlesinger, concurred with the findings of the EMP Commission and urged immediate action to protect the electric grid. Studies by the National Academy of Sciences, the Department of Energy, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the National Intelligence Council reached similar conclusions.

So what has Barack Obama done to protect us from such an attack?

Absolutely nothing.

But there are others in the government that are very, very concerned about this threat.  For example, NORAD recently moved back into Cheyenne Mountain, and the potential for an EMP attack was given as the primary reason for the move

The Pentagon is moving the headquarters for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (Norad) back into Cheyenne Mountain near Colorado Springs, Colo., a decade after having largely vacated the site.

Why the return? Because the enormous bunker in the hollowed-out mountain, built to survive a Cold War-era nuclear conflict, can also resist an electromagnetic-pulse attack, or EMP. America’s military planners recognize the growing threat from an EMP attack by bad actors around the world, in particular North Korea and Iran.

An EMP strike, most likely from the detonation of a nuclear weapon in space, would destroy unprotected military and civilian electronics nationwide, blacking out the electric grid and other critical infrastructure for months or years. The staggering human cost of such a catastrophic attack is not difficult to imagine.

RELATED : Ted Koppel Is Buying Freeze-Dried Food For The Day When A Cyberattack Takes Out The Power Grid

For years, most experts have assumed that an EMP attack would be conducted by exploding at least one nuclear weapon high up in our atmosphere.  And that could definitely happen someday.  But now governments all over the world are working on other ways to deliver an EMP strike, and many of them do not involve nuclear weapons at all.

The U.S. government is among those that have been doing this kind of research.  The U.S. Air Force now reportedly has the capability to conduct an EMP assault against individual buildings or power stations.  The following comes from the Daily Mail

For years, scientists have been attempting to create such a weapon as part of Champ, or the Counter-electronics High-powered microwave Advanced Missile Project.

Now, the US Air Force claims it has advanced the technology, and says it can deploy it using the stealthy Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile-Extended Range (JASSM).

There are fears a well targeted attack could knock out multiple power stations.

‘This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare,’ said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works.

And we also know that Russia, China, Iran and North Korea have also been developing EMP weapons.  This next excerpt comes from DefenseNews

The possibility of man-made EMP events has grown in tandem with the technological sophistication of America’s adversaries. It is widely known that both Russia and China already have this capability, and both countries have carried out serious work relating to the generation of EMP in recent years as part of their respective military modernization programs.

Now, rogue states Iran and North Korea may not be that far behind. Iran, for example, is known to have simulated a nuclear EMP attack several years ago using short-range missiles launched from a freighter. North Korea, meanwhile, has acquired the blueprints to build an EMP warhead, and in July of 2013, a North Korean freighter made it all the way to the Gulf of Mexico with two nuclear capable missiles in its hold.

Why are these other nations developing these technologies?

To use them against us someday of course.

Many are particularly concerned about what Iran has been doing.  In a piece for an Israeli news source, author Dr. Peter Vincent Pry explained that Iranian military documents actually discuss conducting such an attack against the United States…

Iranian military documents describe such a scenario–including a recently translated Iranian military textbook that endorses nuclear EMP attack against the United States.

Thus, Iran with a small number of nuclear missiles can by EMP attack threaten the existence of modernity and be the death knell for Western principles of international law, humanism and freedom.  For the first time in history, a failed state like Iran could destroy the most successful societies on Earth and convert an evolving benign world order into world chaos.

And it wouldn’t take much to completely disrupt electricity generation in America.  In a previous article, I discussed a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission report which made the following jaw dropping statement…

“Destroy nine interconnection substations and a transformer manufacturer and the entire United States grid would be down for at least 18 months, probably longer.”

Are you starting to get the picture?

We are far more vulnerable than most people realize.

And even if we are never attacked by an EMP weapon, scientists tell us that it isinevitable that a massive solar storm will produce a similar result someday anyway.  Back in 1859, a massive solar storm that came to be known as “the Carrington Event” fried telegraph machines all over Europe and North America.

emp_100NASA says that there is a 12 percent chance that a similar solar storm will hit us within the next ten years, and if that happens the consequences will be absolutely catastrophic…

NASA is warning that there’s a 12 percent chance an extreme solar storm will hit Earth in the next decade, sending out massive shock waves that would knock out grids across the world.

The economic impact of this doomsday scenario could exceed $2 trillion — or 20 times the cost of Hurricane Katrina, according to the National Academy of Sciences.

I don’t know why more people aren’t concerned about this.  There are things that the federal government could do to harden our electrical grid, but they aren’t doing them.

This is a foreseeable danger, but our “leaders” are not taking it seriously.

And even if nobody ever purposely attacks us, scientists insist that it is only a matter of time before the sun unleashes an electromagnetic pulse that fries our electronics.  In fact, we have had some very close calls in recent years.  The following is an excerpt from a book that I co-authored with Barbara Fix entitled “Get Prepared Now“…

RELATEDThis Is How To Survive If You Lose Everything (Including Your Home)

Most people have absolutely no idea that the Earth barely missed being fried by a massive EMP burst from the sun in 2012 and in 2013. And earlier in 2014 there was another huge solar storm which would have caused tremendous damage if it had been directed at our planet. If any of those storms would have directly hit us, the result would have been catastrophic. Electrical transformers would have burst into flames, power grids would have gone down and much of our technology would have been fried. In essence, life as we know it would have ceased to exist – at least for a time. These kinds of solar storms have hit the Earth many times before, and experts tell us that it is inevitable that it will happen again.

It amazes me that such a small percentage of the population is taking this threat seriously.

An electromagnetic pulse could bring down our entire society in a single moment at any time, and all of the experts assure us that it will happen someday.

But our politicians are just sitting on their hands and most Americans mock the idea that we need to be concerned about this.

So what do you think?  Please feel free to add to the discussion by posting a comment below…

Fishing for Survival

Click here to view the original post.

Most of us use fishing as a recreational activity. But fishing started out as a necessity for human beings rather than anything else. And what if a time comes when you’ll find yourself obligated to fish for no other purpose than to feed yourself or your family? There are plenty of survival scenarios that could happen and might force you to resort to fishing for survival. If the SHTF scenario finds you at home and prepared, with all the fishing gear you need at your disposal, good. That means one less thing to worry about. But what if you happen to find yourself stranded or you’re forced to leave your home without having enough time to pack your fishing gear too? There are water sources around and “plenty of fish in the sea” but nothing to catch them with. Well, you’re not doomed to starve, that’s for sure. There are plenty of primitive fishing techniques developed way before modern fishing that could very well be implemented today. Sure, fishing with the latest gear is preferable, but if that’s not an option, at least there are other ways that, although are unorthodox, at least they work.

D.I.Y. fishing spear

There is more than one way of improvising such a tool. If you’re aim is good enough and your hand is steady you can make a single point spear. Just find a branch or a piece of wood that’s long enough and simply attach to one end either a blade or a piece of bone that’s sharp enough to pierce flesh. A piece of durable plastic will do just as well. Simply carve enough space at one end of the branch (without breaking it) that’s wide enough to jam the point of the spear in. After you’re done, simply tie the end with a piece of rope or even duct tape and you have yourself a fishing spear. If you’re using a knife, know that exposure to water will deteriorate the quality of the metal in time, so you won’t be able to use it for much else. Another way of doing it is to simply carve the spear tip directly in the branch, by sharpening it with a blade or another sharp object at your disposal. But this won’t be a very durable result, especially if you miss a lot. Hitting the wooden tip on hard surfaces (rocks and sediments) will break it eventually.

But what if you’re a bad that can’t even harpoon a shark in a fish tank? No worries, this mean’s the multi-headed fishing spear is the right tool for you. Take a branch that’s durable enough and split one for about 6 inches long, as many times as you can. Sharpen the multi heads of the spear and tie them last 2 – 3 firmly with the rope, to prevent them from splitting further and eventually breaking. Now find a twig that’s strong enough to keep the “teeth” of the spear separated. You’ll not only hit your prey easily pierce it easily, but the shock from the hit will eject the twig, closing the “spear jaws”. That fish won’t know what hit him.

The multi-headed fishing spear

D.I.Y. fishing gear

Those of you who just can’t give up modern fishing or who simply find spear fishing too primitive can improvise their very own lures, lines and fish hooks. Hooks are easiest to make. If you have a soda can in hand, you can cut the tab a pair of pliers or strong scissors into a hook shape. Anything goes if you creative enough, from safety pins, nails or paper clips to thorns and bones. If you have a sharp knife on you and the patience to do it, you can make your very own toggle hook, used by our primitive ancestors. This is a 1 inch hook made from durable material (bone, sea shells or wood) that’s sharpened at both ends and curbed. It’s attached to the fishing line by its mid section and hidden bait. When the prey swallows the bait, the hook jams in its throat.

Bait shouldn’t be much of a problem, as there is plenty of natural bait around, even in urban environments. Fish tend to go for everything wiggling, so you’ll have no problem if you’ll be using grubs, ants, night crawlers, centipedes, millipedes, maggots, earthworms, caterpillars, beetles etc. If one type of bait doesn’t work, keep trying on until you find the right one. Considering you’ll be in survival situation, you might as well be fishing with multiple fishing lines. So trying out different types of bait and making a statistic shouldn’t be a long and lengthy process at all.

Fishing line is probably the biggest challenge you’ll have to face. Although it’s hard to improvise, it’s not impossible. It can be made out of clothing material (ripped or torn), wire, twisted tree bark, dental floss and pretty much everything else that’s thin enough to attach itself to the fishing pole and strong enough to pull a fish out of the water.

Improvised tab hook

D.I.Y. fishing nets

In some cases this method can be more efficient than the tradition line and hook method. You can use clothing material or pretty much any material that’s strong enough for the job. You can attach two pieces at the extremities and simply walk around with the improvised net submersed. This is very practical if you’re using it in a small lake or stream, but not if you find yourself at the ocean. You’ll have to start from the deepest spot and work your way with the net still immersed to the shallowest spot. When you get there, close the net and pick it up quickly.

Hand fishing

It’s probably the most primitive fishing method available. But still, it works. This activity goes by many names (hogging, graveling, noodling, fish tickling etc.) and it varies in technique from region to region. The easiest approach to hand fishing is to catch fish directly from their lairs or hideouts. Cat fish are easiest to catch due to their considerable size (which makes them easy to hold) and their slow response. Just find a fish lair and rich in and grab the fish out. It’s best if you can grab a direct hold of the gills and or on the inside of the mouth. Just make sure that whatever it is you’re grabbing doesn’t have teeth or spikes.

These are some of the easiest methods of fishing in a survival situation. There are more out there for you to discover. Many of them might not be legal in your state, but in a SHTF scenario, everything goes. So do not try them unless you don’t absolutely have to.

ePrepper HowTo :: Run a Mumble Communications Server

Click here to view the original post.

Post Objective: Demonstrate setting up Mumble server on a Digital Ocean droplet.
Skill Level: No skill is required to follow this how-to.

As you probably already know, at ePrepper, we are focused on communications.  Today, we are going to dig into Mumble and show you how to cheaply set up a server using a Digital Ocean droplet.  You can get started with a $10 credit to Digital Ocean which is enough to get your server running for a full two months!  There are no commitments and this is a risk-free offer.

What is Mumble?  Mumble is a chat server that is often used in gaming, but has some great features including…

  • voice chat (using mic/headset preferred)
  • text chat
  • open environment making it easy for people to join a chat
  • all communication is encrypted
  • iOS and Android apps available as well as OS X and Windows
If you are going to follow this tutorial, you will want to set up a Digital Ocean account in advance (using the link above to get $10 credit so your server will be free for two months).  If you want to try out our Mumble server, you can skip down to the bottom of this page for connection details.

Step 1: Create your Digital Ocean Droplet

Click Create Droplet:

Name Your Droplet:
You can select from various regions.  For best performance, choose one close to you.
Change tabs from “Distributions” to “Applications” and select “Mumble Server”

You can set up SSH keys, but in an effort to keep this tutorial easy, we are going to skip this section and click “Create”

VIOLA!  After a minute, your droplet will be ready!

Step 2: Get Console Access and Configure Mumble
Click “Console Access”
You should have received two emails from Digital Ocean.  One email will include a “root” password for your droplet.  The other email contains some information about setting up Mumble on your droplet.  When you log in for the first time, you will be required to create a new root password.  Of course, remember what you set it to.

Now… pay attention to the screen, there will be a SuperUser password for Mumble on the screen.  Be sure to write this down, you will need it later!

Now, you will want to configure your Mumble server, but really there is just one thing we want to change.  If we don’t change one of the settings, the server will show up to Mumble users with the name “Root.”  So, let’s change that to a better name.

At the # prompt type…
pico /etc/mumble-server.ini

Using the arrow keys on the keyboard to find the line “#registerName=Mumble Server” and change it by removing the #… something like…

Press CTRL-O to write out the file, then press <ENTER>.  Then press CTRL-X to get back to the # prompt.  From the prompt, now type “service mumble-server restart
Ok, now you are ready to connect to the Mumble server!
Step 3: Connect to Your Mumble Server via SuperUser
If you don’t already have a Mumble client installed on your computer, then you will need to install that before proceeding.  You can get the client from here: http://www.mumble.com/mumble-download.php  Follow the instructions for your operating system.  Note: Mumble is also available for iOS and Android, just search your device’s available apps.
Once your app is installed.  You will be greeted with a setup wizard.  This will walk you through setting up your sound (use a headset for this portion, else you will get feedback).  You can skip through the sound setup and mute your mic if you desire (which is what I did for now).
Now, you need to connect to your Mumble server.  If you are using a Mac, then your screen will probably look something like this.  It may be a little different from the PC.
Click “Add New…” on this screen:
Label: Whatever you want to call this connection
Address: The IP address from your Digital Ocean droplet.
Username: SuperUser if you want to have ability to add/remove channels and kick people off the chat.
Password: This is the SuperUser password you jotted down from an earlier step.
If you see this message (and you probably will), you will need to click Yes.  This will accept the certificate from the server and allow you to connect to it.
Next… Add a channel to your Mumble Server.  I’ll just call it Prepper Talk.  You can add as many channels as you like.  The $5/month Digital Ocean droplet is reported to handle about 100 users (probably tons more if users are primarily using text instead of voice)
That’s pretty much it.  Now, you can start texting/voice chatting with other users.
Now, I invite you to try Mumble on our server.  Just scroll up a couple screenshots to where it shows our Mumble server IP address (the number that begins with 104….).  Get a Mac/PC or iOS/Android client and try connecting to us!

Get creative with your handle.  Don’t use your real name or something that hints to your real name.  Just join the server and make up a handle.  Maybe I’ll catch you in the chat!

This may or may not be obvious, but if this Mumble server ends up getting abused, I’ll be forced to take it offline, change IPs, and only circulate the new IP to trusted users.  I will be trying to leave the server up so you can mess around with Mumble as you decide if it is something you want to try.

In Support of Paris, France

Click here to view the original post.

Much of Paris today still has police cars and ambulances. People have been asked to remain at home and to clear the streets.

Yesterday was a Friday the thirteenth.  I am generally not terribly superstitious, but over the years I have had some unusual bad luck on these days.  I don’t hide under the covers, but I have learned not to schedule surgeries for family members on these days, and not to transact business on them. I was uneasy yesterday, and so I played “catch up” on animal and farm tasks and did some Christmas gift planning.

Last evening as I finished spoon feeding my infant grandson, my husband called and asked if I had heard about France.   I immediately turned on France24 to learn that six or seven sites in Paris and in a Northern suburb of Paris had been simaltaneously attacked by terrorists.  I uttered a quick prayer for all of those caught in a terrorist nightmare.

Overnight, a lot of information was provided by France 24 and by Sky News. Regular news programming had been preempted.   ISIS has claimed responsibility for these particularly barbaric cowardly attacks of civilians.  As of the moment of the writing of this post, 129 are dead, a couple of hundred people are injured, and 80 people are in critical condition. Some people remain unaccounted for, as of this date. My thoughts are also with friends of ours who are in the security and anti-terror business and who find themselves in France at this time.   As a result, there is a partial closure of the borders of France and what amounts to martial law in Paris and its outer suburbs.   The French are rallying and providing overnight accomodations to those who were caught without transport home last evening when transportation venues were closed. They are also providing blood to the specific hospital which distributes blood products to the hospitals who require this.

Our prayers are with those who were injured or killed in these attacks last evening, and with those who witnessed them.  Our prayers are also with the families of those killed, injured or missing.   May God bless France in this very difficult time.

How Small Businesses Should be Prepared for Natural Disasters

Click here to view the original post.

Different geographic regions are more prone to certain types of natural disasters. For example, earthquakes are a continual threat for West Coasters, while hurricanes are a staple for East Coasters. In the Midwest and South regions, tornadoes and hurricanes are all too frequent. Drought, flooding and forest fires also wreak havoc across the country from time to time.

As a small business owner, it is your responsibility to prepare your business, your staff and yourself for the possibility that a natural disaster could impact your company. This post identifies the key things to take care of now – before disaster strikes – and how to respond once the disaster has passed.

Maintain Appropriate and Adequate Insurance

First things first – it is critical to maintain the right type and adequate amounts of insurance. You will need insurance to protect your property and inventory. If your area is prone to specific types of natural disaster – for example, flooding, you will want to carry insurance for this as well.

And if your business is interrupted by the disaster, business interruption insurance will help your company stay afloat while it cannot operate.

Ensure Sufficient Emergency Supplies and Rations on the Premises

Sometimes natural disaster strikes so suddenly there is no time to evacuate. If this is the case, you will need to develop an emergency response plan that includes the possibility of remaining with your staff on the property until it is safe to leave.

So here you will want to stock up on emergency food and water, extra paper goods, first aid supplies, batteries and flashlights, blankets and other supplies to tide you over until the danger passes.

If there is time to evacuate, then you will need to have a plan in place for how to alert employees and direct them to exit the premises safely. This should include a facility map so it is clear where exits are located and the fastest route to reach them. If you have staff at multiple sites, you will need to develop and routinely practice your emergency notification system to be sure it works properly at all locations, and ensure they have accurate posted facility maps with exit directions as well.

Have a Post-Disaster Cleanup and Recovery Plan in Place

Even if you have comprehensive insurance coverage in place, it can still take some time after a natural disaster to have the insurer complete their assessment and issue your claims funds. In the interim, you will want to have your own plan to initiate post-disaster cleanup and recovery so you can get your business up and running once again.

Your first step will be to ensure the property is safe and habitable for staff and customers to return to. For example, you will need carpet cleaners to clean and disinfect water-impacted carpeting, fans and air spray to air out and freshen a damp interior, brooms and mops to clean floors, new filters to replace waterlogged ones, paper goods and cleaner sprays to disinfect surfaces and a list of local repair facilities where you can find materials to replace damaged or broken glass, wood and bricking.

You will also want to keep a file folder with warranty and insurance information for both your property itself and individual components that may need to be repaired or replaced. By knowing in advance what you will have to pay for out of pocket and what may be covered by a warranty or insurance claim, you can put aside some funds each month towards a “natural disaster emergency fund” you can use if the need ever arises.

Planning for the possibility of a natural disaster may take a bit of time away from your day-to-day business operations now, but you and your staff will appreciate your advance preparations in the event your company is affected by a natural disaster in the future.

Will Cops Bug Out During SHTF? An Insider’s Answer

“Hey folks, Welcome to Ethical Preparedness. Several times in the prepping community I’ve heard the topic come up of whether cops, paramedics or first responders will bug out and abandon post should SHTF happen. So in this video I wanted to address this topic. As a first responder myself I feel I have a little insight on this topic from what I’ve witness from working along side so many other first responders.”

“First lets get this out of the way. If you hate cops and you think all cops are power hungry and abuse their authority and SHTF were to happen and everybody is gonna come for the cops whatever. That’s fine, everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I know who I am and I know what I stand for. So feel free to go ahead and leave your hateful comments or send me your hate messages. All I have to say is if you hate cops that much then go to the police academy, become a police officer yourself and do the job yourself and then change what you hate about cops and change the system from with in instead of being a keyboard commando. I personally don’t care what you think about cops either and I probably won’t waste my time responding to someone who doesn’t know anything about me either.”

“So back to the point of this video which was the question. Will cops and other first responders bug out and abandon their post should SHTF happen. My belief is from my experience of working along side so many other first responders is that cops and first responders from larger cities, especially cops that patrol the bad inner cities, will most likely get the heck out of dodge should SHTF happen. BUT while the cops and first responders  from the smaller towns probably will  not. The reason I believe this is because cops that work in larger cities usually do not live in their patrol beat, if they even live in that city at all. When a cop doesn’t live in the area that he/she patrols then he/she doesn’t have any real personal stake in that area. The bigger city cop usually just goes from dispatch run to dispatch run dealing with the criminals and the intoxicated idiots in their patrol beat. The bigger city cop also usually doesn’t have the time to really get to know the good people that live in their patrol beat. Plus people that live in the bigger cities tend to hate cops to begin with. Maybe not everybody, but many of the people living in the inner city have a tendency to be involved in narcotics, gangs, and robbery and hustling and other illegal activity and just criminals have a tendency to dislike cops. So during a societal melt down, who in their right mind would stay and try to protect an area they have no personal stake in? Especially in an area that would have so many criminals that would hate them. Especially when their families and loved ones are elsewhere and possible in personal danger. I can also see a lot of cops and first responders not necessarily feeling sorry for these ghetto neighborhoods that will almost surely burn to the ground should SHTF happen.”

“With the amount of cop haters that these neighborhoods have, if SHTF were to happen and the cops were forced to get out of dodge the cops probably won’t lose a wink of sleep when these thugs are standing in the ashes of what use to be their neighborhoods and their scratching their heads trying to figure out what went wrong. But even if the bigger city cops that don’t patrol bad areas, but instead patrol decent areas in a bigger city, they still won’t know most of the people in that area. Cities are just full of different people and strangers and the cops home and family will still more than likely be outside of that city or the complete opposite side of the city.”

“Now you take the small town cop, you know the ones that so many people like to make fun of in the movies or on TV. These small towns will usually require their police or other first responders to either live with in the town or live with in a close proximity of it. this makes it so that many of these small town cops will know most of the people on their control beat and it also makes it so many of these people know where the police officer themselves  lives at. Now while I’m sure this isn’t true in every situation most of these small town cops know that they can not get away with some of the same stuff the big city cops get away with. Therefore, they are a lot more respectful of the townsfolk and in turn the townsfolk like the police more. So when you have a small town cop whose patrol beat includes his neighbor, and his friends and the church he goes to and his own home…he’s going to have a lot more at stake in that town. While he’s obviously not going  to want to see his own house looted and his own family harmed he is also not going to want to see his neighbor harmed or his church or his pasture or the friends that he has in that town to be harmed either.”

“You have to realize he is probably going to know the bank manager or the grocery store manager and his pasture probably married him and his wife. And he’s probably going to know the teachers and the school principal and many people in the town will have probably seen actually grow up from kids to young adults. So I can actually even see local law enforcement in these rural town actually deputizing or swearing in able body townsfolk to assist in protecting the town out should SHTF happen. I can also see the paramedics and fire fighters in these rural towns putting in extra work hours to help out in their community. As again they don’t want to see their neighbors with medical needs suffer should the lights go out and delivery of some medicine stops and etc etc. And they also won’t want to see their neighbors businesses burn to the ground and stuff like that.”

“Now, in reality, unless the catastrophic event makes it necessary to get out of dodge, something like a very contagious disease or nearby dirty bomb or something like that. Small town first responders will probably almost certainly stay at their post. Most first responders know it’s better to fight the beast before it reaches even their neighbors door, let alone actually let it reach their own door. So just to recap, I can see bigger city first responders not having any real stake in the areas that they service and being quick to bug out to protect their family and neighbor should SHTF happen. And I can see smaller town first responders almost being forced to not bug out in order to protect their family and neighbors should SHTF. To simplify it, during SHTF, everybody including most first responders will simply go to where their families members safety is at stake.”

Please, Father … Help Us To Understand!

Click here to view the original post.

It’s still too early to make any kind of sense of the terror attacks in Paris, France, other than to say that with each new hour, the news is more devastating.   At this moment in time, all I want to do is plead for God’s mercy on His people… and to pray.

Dear Heavenly Father,

How it must grieve You to see how Man, made in Your image, can be so cruel and evil to each other.  In these first hours after the horrendous attacks upon the innocent people of France, my heart is shattered in pain, imagining the fear and the panic that must have been a part of all those people’s last minutes on earth.
Father, I pray that each one of those people had a personal encounter with Jesus before they breathed their last.  I know that is illogical and unreasonable to expect, but it just makes me realize how quickly lost are the chances of those who don’t know Him … and how much bigger will that burden of pain be for their families.

And, Father, I have to be honest.  I admit that I don’t know if I can ask forgiveness for those who perpetrated this evil.  Your Word says “they know not what they do”.  I know they have been so blinded by hate, which does not come from You.  And I believe that their souls are full of demons.  How else can you explain the atrocities they committed against another human being; a person they did not even know?  And I am aware that our Enemy roams the earth, seeking whomever he can devour.  And it sure feels like he has consumed every ounce of You that might have remained in the monsters that robbed Paris of their peace last night.   But I know I must forgive, so I have to ask the Holy Spirit for the power to be able to do that, because I am unable to do so on my own.
Most of all, I know my words sound weak in asking for comfort for those people left behind — for the family members who are in shock and pain; for those who witnessed the carnage and survived; for those first responders who could not have been prepared for what they saw; and for law enforcement and the nation’s leaders, who have to wonder if there was more that could have been done.  But, Father, I know that only You and Your Spirit can commune with our spirits; no human words or actions can heal the wounds and the damage done to our inner being.
We were not made to experience such pain; that wasn’t Your plan for us.  But from the first moment that Man listened to the lies of Satan, we have had to pay the consequences for our disobedience.  And the acceleration of lies, sin, and Evil that Your Word has prophesied was on display last night.  And, if there is one thing we know for sure, Father… it is not over.
My spirit discerns the Apostle Paul’s message to us in Ephesians 6, and that Satan has appointed a dark ruler to preside over France.  And I know assignments have been given to those who have pledged their allegiance to the Enemy’s false promise of conquest.  So, Father, I intercede in prayer on behalf of all those who belong to You, and on behalf of those who still have a chance to know You… I ask you to send Your army of Heavenly Angels to battle against these rulers, against the powers, and against the world forces of this darkness — both on this earth and in the spiritual realm.  I pray this in the Name of Jesus, knowing that it has supernatural power to effect the future.
Because we are not intimidated; nor are we conceding defeat.  Because we believe in Your Sovereignty and Your Justice, Hope is what will soothe our pain and heal these ghastly wounds.  Jesus is our balm and our Physician, as well as the Sword of Your Vengeance.  While suffering the pain of those lost to Him, He will remain steadfastly in our presence and we will overcome this Evil.  Father, I pray that His tears will touch the heart of every person across the globe, and our spirits will unite in recognition of Your love for us and what Jesus’s blood, shed on the Cross, has accomplished for each person who seeks to know Him.
Father, accept these humble words on behalf of all those who love You.  We ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to help us forgive, and we thank You for the gift of Your Son, that we might know how to love each other… Father God, help us to love each other!  Amen.

Prep Blog Review: Health Tips To Remember When SHTF

Click here to view the original post.

prep blog reviewThere’s nothing really more valuable than one’s health. Because without it, you can’t do much. And prepping becomes more of a wish than a reality, if you lack the strength to do it.

So whatever your survival plan might be, keep in mind to make health a part of it. And here are 5 tips that will steer you in the right direction.

1. Dakin’s Solution – A Homemade Antiseptic

homemade antiseptic“Dakin’s solution is an antiseptic solution developed during World War I to treat infected wounds. It is a viable solution that is being used even today and it’s a perfect homemade antiseptic for preppers and survivalists.

Dakin’s solution is an antiseptic solution containing sodium hypochlorite (common household bleach) and water. Dakin’s solution is not the only antiseptic available, and on the market you can find stronger germicidal solutions, like the ones containing carbolic acid (phenol) or iodine.”

2. 25 Natural Remedies For Diabetes

natural remedies“A few weeks ago I read an email from a reader that made me sad.  In it, she said that given her daughter’s reliance on insulin, she had come to terms with the fact that in a true SHTF scenario, her daughter would die.

Those of you that have read William Forstchen’s book, One Second After may recall that the main character’s daughter was a diabetic and died because of a lack of insulin.”

3. When The Meds Run Out, These Are The Natural Alternatives That Could Save Your Life

natural remedies“One of the perks of Ready Nutrition is to read books on prepping and natural living and share which ones I like with all of you.

Like many of you, I have a natural curiosity about natural medicine and practiced using essential oils and herbs to make my own salves and teas. I am by no means a master herbalist but love learning about the subject.”

4. Worms Can Be A Serious Medical Problem After TEOTWAWKI

worms“When I was a child, I remember my mother always worrying and watching to see if we had worms.  Now this is something that I haven’t thought about in years. But recently I have noticed a couple of articles about people having tapeworms.  Now to most younger Americans, worms are not something that they have ever had to worry about.

In talking to a few people, I find that they know very little about how to prevent or treat worms.  You can contact worms from simple things like walking barefoot in areas where people defecated. Then you touch your feet and your mouth.”

5. Homemade Decongestant Chest Rub – Compare To Vicks®

chest rub“I never even thought of making my own decongestant homemade chest rub.

In fact, I had completely forgotten that there even was a product like that.Until I needed it.

Necessity is the mother of invention, right?

In this case, yes.  And though I didn’t really invent this, I finally cobbled together information from the internet and made my own.”

Policing For Profit: Where Does Your State Rank In Forfeiture Abuse?

Click here to view the original post.

Image source: IJ.org. Note: Maryland received a B, Rhode Island and Delaware a D-

The majority of states in the US received a grade of “D” or worse in the second edition of the Institute for Justice’s Policing For Profit report, which examined how law enforcement can seize property or money and not return it, even if the person is never charged or found guilty.

“Civil forfeiture laws pose some of the greatest threats to property rights in the nation today, too often making it easy and lucrative for law enforcement to take and keep property—regardless of the owner’s guilt or innocence,” the Institute’s research team wrote in the report’s introduction.

The report graded the civil forfeiture laws of each state, as well as the federal government, documenting the “remarkable growth in forfeiture activity across the country” and highlighting a “worrisome lack of transparency surrounding forfeiture activity and expenditures from forfeiture funds.”

“Every year, police and prosecutors across the United States take hundreds of millions of dollars in cash, cars, homes and other property—regardless of the owners’ guilt or innocence,” the report said. “Under civil forfeiture laws, the government can seize this property on the mere suspicion that it is connected to criminal activity. No charges or convictions are required.”

Discover The ONLY Way Back To True Freedom And Liberty In America…

Often, police departments pocket the money to purchase new equipment.

“Once property is seized, owners must navigate a confusing, complex and often expensive legal process to try to win it back,” the report says. “Worst of all, most civil forfeiture laws give law enforcement agencies a powerful incentive to take property: a cut, or even all, of forfeiture proceeds.”

Some of its disturbing highlights include:

  • The amount of civil forfeiture in the United States increased by 4,667 percent between 1986 and 2014. In 1987, the US Department of Justice’s (DOJ) Civil Forfeiture Fund took in $93.7 million and by 2014 it was raking in $4.5 billion.
  • Federal forfeiture revenues grew by 1,000 percent between 2001 and 2014. In that period DOJ and the US Treasury collected $29 billion in forfeiture money.
  • Around 88 percent of the civil forfeitures conducted by the DOJ took place administratively, which means that no court hearing was held and no lawyers were involved. The government simply took money and property, and the person either didn’t have the resources to challenge it or chose not to do so.
  • Federal civil forfeiture laws are among the nation’s worst. The Institute gave Uncle Sam a D-.
  • Between 2000 and 2013, the amount of forfeiture money DOJ shared with state and local law enforcement tripled, rising from $198 million to $643 million a year.

No state received an A, and only four states – Maine, Missouri, Indiana and North Carolina – got a B+. The majority of the states received variations of Ds or an F.

Be Prepared for What? | Backdoor Survival

Welcome to this week’s Survival Buzz with an update on my own preps plus news and announcements from the Backdoor Survival blog.

A couple of week’s ago this comment from “Chele” was posted to my Facebook page:

The boy scout’s motto is ‘be prepared.’ But be prepared for what–was the first thing I thought.

Be prepared…. for life, living, things as they come, things as they happen. Be prepared to make your way, as you become better enabled, as you can. Be prepared to respond, not just react, to situations as you face them.

This definition of what it means to be prepared is so well aligned with my own core values that it deserves a spot front and center in the Buzz.  Wouldn’t you agree?

Be Prepared For What? | Backdoor Survival

Instead of listing my latest preps for you, I decided to a bit of blog housekeeping and share a number of comments I have been saving from various readers.  Many of you have told me that you learn as much from the comments as from the articles themselves.  That is a good thing and I am so blessed to have such engaged and helpful readers.  Your willingness to share is awesome.

So, without further ado, let us move on to the mailbag.

Backdoor Survival Mail Bag & Reader Tips

In response to the article 25 Natural Remedies For Diabetes, Steve wrote:

Another plant one can use is the crepe myrtle for type 2 diabetes.

The variety you would want to use is the Lagerstroemia indica, it is used in India, China, Korea, and Japan. These are also found throughout the United States and do very well especially in the south.

All one has to do is steep the leaves in hot water then drink. Very useful plant to have around the house if you have Type 2 diabetes like me. I have been using this bush/tree for over 2 years now and have had no ill effects and have not taken any medication for diabetes for over 1 1/2 years. So you might want to look into it just incase or as an alternative.

Bob wrote in response to the long-standing article How to Recharge Alkaline Batteries:

I have two grandsons who go thru batteries over and over. Like you I had a bunch of old dead ones lying around. I decided to try both the Maximal Power FC999 charger and the meter / tester. I had them shipped to me at work. I wanted to test it out. We have a bucket or pail that is full of old dead batteries of all sizes for proper disposal.

I picked out 4 AA’s dead by meter test and charged them until they showed OK. Checked them again with the meter. They now show high end of good on the meter. I also found when testing for others to charge there were a lot of batteries that showed good on the meter. And OK in the charger. I have 20 AAs that I took home and gave a friend 20 AA’s also. Still charging as I type this. The charger and meter won’t take long to pay for itself at this rate. I keep mining the bucket for AAA, AA, C, and D’s good and those needing charged. The charger only showed 1 battery as BAD so it went back in the bucket.

Long story short. Thank you for not only useful information but $$$ savings too.

The takeaway from this comment is not that you have to go out and purchase an alkaline battery charger (although they do work great), but that many times, a device or gizmo with multiple batteries may show “dead” when only one of the many batteries is fully discharged.

For the cost of an inexpensive tester, you can retrieve the good batteries (those that show good on the meter) and continue to use them.  The rest can be returned to recycle or charged up using the Maximal Power FC999.

Battery Tester BT-250 | Backdoor Survival

Speaking of meters, I have a bunch of them up in Washington State but they never made south during my road trip.  Since I had to buy new anyway, I opted for a slightly upgraded model, the Amprobe BAT-250 and found it superior.  The way it is designed, the battery your are testing fits into a grove, holding it place while you move the slider to make contact.  I like it so much that it will be going into this year’s holiday gift guide.

Here is some excellent advice from “Really Old Guy”:

One caution regarding bugging out to the in-laws or other relatives. Yes, they may have a WELL-stocked retreat. Yes, they may welcome you with open arms (they ARE family, after all).

BUT, as every fisherman knows, worms get rotten if they aren’t packaged correctly and fish spoil if they aren’t kept in a package in the fridge or freezer.

I HIGHLY suggest that if you’re headed to friends or relatives houses as your BOL, that you do some ‘advance’ preparations. FIRST, talk to them about your concerns and see what their take is on your staying there—perhaps FOREVER (I’m talking TEOTWAKI) or even for an ‘extended’ period of time.

I strongly suggest you store some alternate supplies at this BOL. Just a couple boxes/buckets of beans and rice may be all you can afford, but it’ll definitely ease the tension if you’re there for a LONG period of time. I’d suggest some basic tools, as well and maybe even some heirloom seeds. Since none of us knows the future, and none of us knows what may befall, it only makes sense to prepare for those unseen circumstances and not be a burden on friends and/or family.

Ruby asks:

I’ve been wondering if the re-usable Mason jar lids are worth purchasing.  Quite an up front expense.  But, buying the ‘one time’ lid is getting expensive too.  Would love to see an article from Gaye comparing the two and cost effectiveness of the re-usable ones.

If the re-usable ones are worth the money; which brand would you suggest?

I have a big, beautiful canner that is still sitting in its box so I asked my canning maven, Daisy Luther (aka The Organic Canner), for her opinion.  She tried the re-usable canning lids years ago and at the time, was not impressed. That said, she readily admits that they have probably been improved over the years.

Are there any canners out in Backdoor Survival land with some experience with reusable mason jar lids that you are willing to share?  I am sure that Ruby, as well as others, would be grateful.

Interesting in “Value Prepping” ?  Check out this advice from “dmwalsh”:

For value prepping quickly, rice and lentils along with salt and maybe some hot sauce as a splurge are a great way to get long term storage foods for minimal cost.

But the best way to get inexpensive food with variety would be to watch for supermarket sales and any coupons in local papers. If your markets are stingy with their sales, just try to pick up a can or two of soup, ravioli, spaghetti, canned meats, etc each time you shop. Just two extra cans a week adds up to 104 cans by the end of a year.

Alternatively, you can try to earn extra money on the side by leveraging any skills you have. Fixing broken bikes, lawnmowers, snow blowers, etc. can be great if you can get broken ones free. Or if you’re handyman handy then doing odd jobs for neighbors can earn you cash while you get to see if any of them could be helpful in a disaster.

Flexibility and creativity are great skills for any prepper, newbie or old hand. :)

Other Announcements

My friend George Ure, who (who runs UrbanSurvival.com) has published his first novel, Dreamover. This has been his dream for years and I am soooooo proud of him.

His book is a story that involves finance, the national security state, and a good bit of woo-woo. Toss in location settings in Seattle, rural East Texas, and a few flying scenes (one of George’s dozens of hobbies and distractions).

I told him I would mention when his book came out – you can find more details over here…it’s an action-adventure along the lines of a Clive Cussler novel. Hope you enjoy it!

The Final Word

Before signing off for today, I want to thank everyone for your many comments and emails.  Averaging over 100 a day, it would be impossible to respond to all of them.  That said, please know that I do read them and take what you have to say seriously.

The shape of the case has been molded to better contour to your hand for comfortable measurements.  I love my new battery tester!

Tim Wolfe, white male privilege?
James Walton “I Am Liberty

Tim WolfeThe events in Missouri were very inspiring. I was impressed by the unity and the power in hitting the university where it hurts. That is until I read the list of demands.

In demand one the group demanded Mr. Wolfe admit to his white male privilege and apologize. I nearly lost my lunch. What I thought was a decent and impressive strike at institutions that are loosing integrity turned out to be a simply game of whose prejudice wins. Here is the full demand below.

I. We demand that the University of Missouri System President, Tim Wolfe, writes a handwritten apology to the Concerned Student 1950 demonstrators and holds a press conference in the Mizzou Student Center reading the letter. In the letter and at the press conference, Tim Wolfe must acknowledge his white male privilege, recognize that systems of oppression exist, and provide a verbal commitment to fulfilling Concerned Student 1950 demands. We want Tim Wolfe to admit to his gross negligence, allowing his driver to hit one of the demonstrators, consenting to the physical violence of bystanders, and lastly refusing to intervene when Columbia Police Department used excessive force with demonstrators.

I also want to talk about work tonight. I see a ton of this unrest and the basis of income inequality and I think its important that we talk about the satisfaction of work and most importantly how we deal with others success. We cannot spend our lives frumping around angry at another mans success.

11-13-15 sisyphus_sucks_to_be_meIn Greek mythology Sisyphus (/ˈsɪsɪfəs/; Greek: Σίσυφος, Sísiuphos) was the king of Ephyra (now known as Corinth). He was punished for his self-aggrandizing craftiness and deceitfulness by being forced to roll an immense boulder up a hill, only to watch it roll back down, repeating this action for eternity.

Perhaps this punishment is actually what life is all about. In my opinion its not about the about reaching the peak its most certainly about the journey

Situational Awareness: Staying Safe When Life Gets Dangerous

Click here to view the original post.

situation awarenessMy eldest recently received his learner’s permit, also known as his “temps” in these parts. When you’ve been driving for almost 30 years, there’s a whole lot of stuff that is just second nature. You don’t give any real, conscious thought to looking both ways before proceeding into an intersection, lighted or otherwise. Keeping one eye on the traffic coming your way so as to ensure none of those cars are veering into your lane is just a matter of routine.

To a new driver, though, all of that is new and can be confusing. How do I keep an eye on the road in front of me, the cars around me, the speedometer, and the fuel gauge, while keeping track of where I am and where I’m going, all at the same time? After a while, all of it becomes second nature, though, right? It just takes some time and some practice to develop the appropriate habits.

The same can be said about situational awareness.

What is situational awareness?

For those not in the loop, situational awareness is simply being very aware of your surroundings, and any potential danger around you. Many refer to it as keeping your head on a swivel, always looking around to see what’s what. I like to think of it as taking the blinders off. Entirely too many people are rather oblivious to the world around them. Either their eyes are glued to their phones or they are just lost in thought, sort of drifting through their day. Given the ear buds that are often in place as well, these people may as well be blind and deaf.

In other words, they are easy targets.

By lifting your head and watching the world around you, you’re in a much better position to not only detect and avoid possible threats but react to them quickly and efficiently. I don’t necessarily mean leaping into action like a super hero but rather walking around the open manhole rather than falling into it. Or maybe crossing to the other side of the street so as to avoid the group of questionable looking youths huddled together on the next block.

For many people, the hardest part of situational awareness is putting their phone away and turning off the music, or at least turning down the volume. And just like when you started driving, it might seem as though you’re overwhelmed at trying to pay attention to everything. That will subside after some time and you’ll become used to actually seeing the world, rather than experiencing it through the screen of a phone.

What if you don’t see the danger until too late?

The sad truth is that sometimes you can’t see danger until it is too late. I can’t imagine the horror of being in a place like Charlie Hebdo, the Twin Towers, or the Parisian concert hall that was attacked. Any signs were probably visible to those outside, not inside, if at all. Nonetheless, some people were better situated to survive than others.

One man recounted how he was able to escape from terrorists while the gunmen reloaded. First of all, he had the presence of mind, like the American heroes on a train mere months earlier, to act while they were reloading and able to shoot as quickly. Secondly, he had a seat that was near the front of the theater – near an exit door. He helped at least one injured person to escape with him. Some of his friends managed to find a small room in the building to hide in. Their quick thinking and action may have saved their lives.

When you enter somewhere like a restaurant, seat yourself with your back to the wall, able to see the doors (if there are multiples, watch the main door), and make note of where any exits are. If you can, mentally make a plan for how to get from your seat to each exit with your whole party. Be sure to take into account any obstacles, like a hostess stand or walls. (Some restaurants have half walls that you may not notice if your situational awareness is truly offline.)

If something does happen, you will be better prepared to react. If you have half an eye on the door and notice the tip of a rifle poke through ahead of a black ski mask, how do you think that will affect your response time versus that of someone sitting with their back to the door whose first warning something has gone wrong is either the sound of gunfire or shots, or the expression of someone else in the room?

If you have been practicing situational awareness, then you have a far better chance of realizing what is happening quickly and finding a way to escape or hide until it’s over. That”s not a guarantee, of course, but it’s far better than being one of the sheeple.

Why bother?

An added benefit to exercising situational awareness is that it gives you an air of confidence. Muggers and other ne’er do wells like to choose victims who look timid, afraid, or unaware of their surroundings. Those who keep their heads on swivels are, or at least appear to be, none of those things. They are also more likely to notice a mugger or ne’er do well long before they are able to cause trouble for them.

At least as importantly as noticing bad people on a normal day, being aware of your surroundings means you will notice uneven sidewalks before you twist an ankle or break a heel, friends you would otherwise pass without speaking, and all manner of public notices – including clearance sales and warnings of upcoming road closures. Practicing situational awareness automatically means you aren’t online all the time. If your whole family is doing this, you have automatically cut down on your kids screen time, possibly dramatically. You may even have increased how much you are all talking to each other, although teens are notoriously bad about talking to their parents.

If it isn’t already clear, the idea here is not to behave as though every trip to the post office is a dangerous mission deep behind enemy lines. Rather, it is just to keep your eyes focused on what’s around you, instead of watching for the latest Facebook status updates. We live in a beautiful world, take the time to actually experience it when you’re out and about. And if something bad happens and it helps you survive, all the better.

Test yourself

With a friend, go somewhere with a lot of people, like a park or a mall. Take a few minutes to observe what is going on around you. Have your friend ask you questions about what you saw, heard, smelled, and possibly felt. Try this under different circumstances, such as going to a quieter place. Keep practicing until it becomes second nature.

Now that you understand what you need to do, do it. Don’t use headphones when you are out and about – save them for the house, or when you are a passenger in a vehicle.  Keep your head up. Most importantly, simply pay attention to the world around you. As an added bonus, you’ll start really noticing the (literal) roses, sunsets, and other beautiful sights you have been walking past every day.
