Bug Out Bike: What You Need To Know To Survive

Click here to view the original post.

Bug Out Bike - Riding Through Rough Terrain

Is A Bug Out Bike Right For You?

Should you employ a tough and rugged bug out bike to make a hasty escape to your hidden bug out location? I think you should seriously consider it. Why? Because a bug out bicycle has distinct advantages over both 1) bug out vehicles and 2) plain old walking.

In a SHTF scenario, you know that fuel shortages and clogged roads will be a vehicle’s biggest challenge. Add to that a lack of spare parts for your fuel powered bug out vehicles and you’re rolling the dice when TSHTF.

But you plan to hike, which avoids the vehicle bug out challenges. But while hiking is more reliable it’s both slow and burdensome. It’s actually the slowest and least efficient way to get from point A to point B (besides maybe crawling). Hiking is the default last resort bug out option. But unless you’re disabled, a bug out bike is often an excellent upgrade.

However, a bug out bike for the wrong person, in the wrong setting, could prove deadly.

So in today’s article, we are going to dive deeper into the advantages and the disadvantages of a bug out bike.

We’ll discuss a few of the best bug out bike components and designs.

I’ll even share with you a few badass upgrades and accessories you need to get. Ones that will turn your boring street cruiser into a terrain slaying bug out bicycle beast.

Then we’ll finish up with your 6 step action plan to turn your abandoned garage bike into a badass, terrain crushing bug out bike.

No Scarcity Problems, Bikes Are Everywherebug out bike 2

You won’t struggle to find a bike if you want one. There are plenty of bikes to go around. You probably already have one and if not, you can easily get one for cheap.

According to Statista,  between 41 and 51 million Americans rode a bicycle in the last 12 months. And bikes related sales bring in around 6 billion dollars annually.

I’ll bet you’ve ridden a bike at some point in your life. Almost all of us have.

Millions of Americans regularly ride a bike for exercise, fun, and transportation purposes. Bikes are everywhere, and we’ve ridden them our entire lives!

Many of us had a paper route as a kid with a canvas bag hung on the handlebars of a single speed fat tire cruiser. Likely you have a bike in your garage or shed right now. If you have children, chances are they have bikes.

The bottom line is that bicycles are everywhere, and they are affordable…making it easy to add a bike to your bug out plan.

Bikes Are Stupid Simple Machines

When compared to most of the new technology we operate in our modern lives, bikes are stupid simple.

Sure, some new bikes come equipped with advanced accessories and unique mechanisms. These help create a smoother ride and improve braking.  But, the core bike mechanics are easily understood by nearly everyone.

No complicated electrical parts or micro-sized mechanical wizardry.

Bikes are essentially 2 tires bolted to a frame and tied together with gears and a chain. You transfer your energy through 2 pedals, which move the chains and rotate a tire.

Like I said: A very simple concept.

This simple design means that the components parts are readily available and relatively straightforward to repair.

And as far as operating one; if you’ve learned to ride a bike once, you’ve learned for life. The majority of Americans have ridden a bike, and if you haven’t and want to, no one can stop you from learning.

To quote Freddy Mercury, “Get On Your Bikes and Ride.”

Traffic Jams

Bikes and Traffic Jams Don’t Mix

Ever seen a bike traffic jam? Me neither. When roads get crowded, and cars stop, bicycles can just slip past unperturbed.

When Highway 69 turns into a parking lot, you’ll be pedaling past the helpless masses on your way to bug out safety.

The bottom line is that bikes are 1) reliable, 2) easy to operate, 3) easy to maintain, and 4) get you from point A to point B. In this case, point B is your bug out location.

The Opposite is True For Motorized Vehicles

It’s true that there are millions of bikes owned by Americans. However, almost everyone in America has at least one motorized vehicle.

We are a fossil fuel addicted motorized society.

They only evidence you need of this fact is the advent of drive through fast food and drive up ATM’s. Heck, I even had a drive through liquor store in my town, but it has since gone out of business.

With so many people’s default SHTF bug out being a vehicle, fuel shortages will be likely when things go south. People will hoard what they can get their hands on, and fresh supplies will quickly dwindle.

The point is, you may believe you’ll be able to jump in your car and split when the SHTF. The problem is, so does everyone else.

If you live in or near a densely populated area, the roads will likely be clogged with people trying to leave. Your car or truck may become useless in this scenario.

However, if you have a bug out bike, with some basic gear, you will be able to thread your way out. In fact, there are probably subtle bike paths to sneak your way out of town nearly undetected.

You should find all the bike paths in your area. Bike path maps are usually available at your local bike shop. These paths may go long distances, or may be circular loops; so do your research.

While a moving vehicle is the fastest of options; a parked vehicle is the slowest. A bug out bicycle is faster is walking, and sure beats being stuck in a massive traffic jam.

Speed is essential in a SHTF environment. Depending on where you live, and where you’re headed, a bicycle can give you a speedy means of bugging out. And you can carry a lot more gear than you probably think (more on this later).

Besides the inevitable fuel shortages and clogged roads, there will also be spare parts shortages.

The sheer number of unique cars we drive will make getting parts either difficult or impossible.

So unless you’ve stocked up on essential spare parts for your own vehicle, you may be SOOL when the SHTF!

To make matters worse, most new vehicles have complex, computer controlled onboard systems. Systems that are impossible for regular joes to fix themselves.

Maybe you’ll get lucky; maybe nothing will break on your rig for a long time. But remember everything eventually breaks, everything eventually fails. What’s new today, becomes old tomorrow.

But bike parts are simple and bikes don’t need gas or electricity. They are understandable, simple 2-wheel human power. No finicky computer controlled parts to leave you high and dry.

What about flat tires and broken chains?. Yes, they are common bike problems, but easily fixed. Even if you’re a complete klutz, basic bicycle repair is something you can do when push comes to shove.

Another benefit of a bug out bike is it can carry a ton of gear and supplies. With panniers (saddlebags) and a bike trailer, you can transport more than just a bug out bag alone.

Here Are The 104 Items You Should Put In Your Panniers: Snag My #104 Item Bug Out Checklist.  Click Here To Get A FREE Copy Of It.

Okay, so if I’ve sparked your interest in using a bug out bike for your bug out plan, let’s go over a few of the main things you’ll need to consider.

  1. You need to start thinking about the frame, wheels, components.
  2. Are you in physical shape for cycling? If you are, great! If not, you’ll need to get there.
  3. Are you going to modify your own bike, or buy a ready to roll machine?

Not All Bug Out Bikes Are Created Equally

Let’s assume that you’ve decided to get yourself a bug out bike. Where should you start looking? What kinds of things should you think about?

I believe that weight and strength are the 2 most important factors to consider in choosing a good bug out bike. Bicycle frames, wheels, and components are all made of different materials. And all the materials have unique weight and strength properties.

Bug Out Bike Frames

All bikes are built on a frame, and bicycle frames come in a wide variety of styles, materials, and geometry. The frame geometry is what determines what type of bike you have.

From a sleek, quick handling road machine built for speed to a comfortable, relaxed model, designed for cruising along the beach. Or a mountain bike designed to take a beating on even the most rugged terrain.

For our bug out purposes, a mountain frame geometry is the best.  In terms of weight, strength, and comfort it’s the frame design you want. Plus you have the ability to add panniers, frame packs, or pull a bike trailer.

You want frame materials that are light. Nothing will get you bogged down faster than a heavy steel frame, with steel rims and components.

The bicycle industry has been trending towards lighter and stronger materials over the past decade. So let’s take a look at the types of frame materials and their characteristics.

1 – Carbon Steel

Steel is the most common material used for bike frames. It is strong, but it is also heavy.

2 – Chromoly (Chrome Molybdenum) Steel

This is a lighter type of steel that is stronger than carbon steel. Today, it is widely used in the industry. It allows the frame tubes to be made thinner, with butted or thickened ends where the tubes are welded. It has the advantage of being relatively flexible and gives a comfortable ride.

3 – Aluminum

Light, strong and stiff, aluminum frames have evolved from oversized tubes to much thinner ones. They provide a good alternative to chromoly or steel.

4 – Titanium

Lighter than steel and equally strong, titanium frames are responsive and absorb vibrations well. Higher in price, titanium frames are found on many high-end bikes.

5 – Carbon Fiber

Made from parallel fibers of carbon and laminated with glue, this material makes strong bike frames. However, it tends to be stiff, and difficult to repair. Still, it’s light and used for building racing and cross-country bikes. It is also expensive.

So as you can see, there are numerous choices in bike frame materials. So you’ll need to decide what your particular needs are. Needs such as:

1) Distance to your bug out location, 2) your regional terrain, and 3) your physical conditioning.

Here’s a solid article about frames, for even more detailed research

bug out bike components

Bug Out Bike Components

You will want your bug out bike to have reliable, high-quality components. This is a critical part of a your bug out bike.

Pedals, brakes, derailleurs, cables, handlebars and wheels all should be top quality. Local bike shops, internet sources, and eBay are all good places to research these components.

Typically the cheaper the components the more likely they are to fail premature or in rugged conditions.

Stripped derailers, broken cables, and plastic pedals can really hinder your bug out. Not being able to shift smoothly or having a jumped chain is not acceptable mid bug out. Upgraded components is a good place to spend your bug out bike dollars.

I won’t be diving into each component today (there are sites dedicated solely to these topics). However, if you aren’t familiar with bicycles, or their various parts, talk to people in your local bike shop, or start looking on the Internet. You’ll be amazed at how much information is out there.

Bike Nashbar is one of my favorite resources and has tons of accessories and information so feel free to check out their website: when you ready to upgrade your components.

Bug out Bicycle Example

Bug Out Bike Accessories

Like components, bike accessories come in all styles and materials and range from low to high prices. For your bug out bike, the most important accessories are the ones for carrying your gear.

Panniers, which are essentially saddlebags, have rigid frames that bolt to the bike frame and fork.

Bug Out Bike Accessories

Set Of Pannier’s

There are also frame mounted bags with Velcro straps that fit inside the main triangle of the bike.

bug out bike 2

Frame Mounted Bag

Another useful accessory is a rigid rack that bolts to the seat post of your rig.

seat post rack

Ridgid Seat Post Rack

Besides panniers and gear bags, you may decide you need lights for night riding. Some are battery powered, but my personal favorites are ones powered by generator hubs. These setups produce electrical current by using the rotation of the wheels.

They even make bike trailers with a generator hub that produces electricity to charge your radio, lights or cell phone.

As far as bike trailers go they are great for hauling gear, but can make rugged terrain biking hell. So if you know for a fact you will be sticking to roads then really any trailer will do that can carry 50+ lbs. But if you will be going off-road at all you should check out this solution:

bug out bike trailer

It’s both single tracked and rugged. Which is exactly what you need for a bug out bike trailer.

Here Are The 104 Items That Should Be In Your Panniers: Snag My #104 Item Bug Out Checklist.  Click Here To Get A FREE Copy Of It.

Pretty cool, huh? Even if you don’t need this elaborate of a system, it’s nice to be aware of some of the cutting edge bike gear that’s available.

My goal isn’t to list every conceivable gizmo and gadget made for bicycles. It is to acquaint you with the general concept that a two-wheeled, human-powered bicycle is a very viable bug out option.

Are You In Good Enough Shape?

Riding a bike a long distance is NOT a good idea if you’re out of shape. Could you realistically bug out on a bike? Are you in good enough physical shape to possibly get yourself 10, 20, perhaps 40 miles away from your home? Can you do that with the extra weight of panniers and a trailer?

Bug out bikers must be hardier than most. Riding a bicycle to your bug out location may not be an option for everyone. You have to prepare you body for the physical requirements. If you’re not in shape, you simply won’t make it.

Your terrain and local weather will also play a factor. Do you live in the Southwest, in the hot and arid desert? Or do you live in the middle of suburban sprawl? Maybe you live in a densely populated inner city? Do you live in the mountains?  Each region has its own set of challenges you need to physically prepare for if you want to bug out via a bicycle.

Modify or Buy Your Way To Bug Out Bike Perfection?

As simple as bikes are out of the box, most are not ready for the intensity and challenge of a full bug out.

The good news is it’s not that hard to transform an old beater bike into a badass bug out bike with a little bit of elbow grease.

Step 1 – The Frame

The frame is the most important part of any bicycle. If it’s heavy and uncomfortable, it’ll be a real drag to ride, especially if you need to put some distance between you and your bug out location.

Bike frames these days are made from the traditional steel to aluminum, titanium, and carbon fiber. Each material has their own benefits and drawbacks.

So make sure you start with a bike with a strong but light frame. No heavy steel frames or you’ll regret it.

Step 2 – High Quality Components

Replace all the old and inferior bike components with high-quality reliable ones. You will have to spend a little bit but if you’re serious about bugging out on a bike then this is critical to your success.

Step 3 – How Much Gear and How To Carry It

Figure out how much gear and supplies you plan to take. Then search for the best bug out bike accessories for successfully hauling this gear.

Here’s a good set of panniers on Amazon that can carry a lot of gear.

There are lightweight trailers for bikes, well-designed racks, and panniers of every size and dimension. There are good light setups for night riding.

Basic Bike Maintenance and Repair Tools

Before we wrap up this article on bug out bikes, it would be a mistake to not mention bike maintenance and repair. You need to learn the basics and be able to fix your bike when parts and components eventually fail. Some repairs you should be able to do is:

  • Fix a flat tire by replacing or patching the inner tube
  • Replacing worn out brakes
  • Replacing a shot chain
  • Fixing a broken chain
  • Adjusting and fine tuning all the components

You also need the basic tools to perform these maintenance functions.  A good set of screw drivers and alan wrenches is a must.

Action Plan

A bug out bike may be the best choice for your specific situation. Or at least it might make for an excellent plan B.  Whichever it is, you should start getting your bug out bike prepared, just in case.

The way you do this is by:

  1. Making sure you have a bike with a sufficiently strong but light frame
  2. Replacing any weak or cheap components with ones that can handle rugged terrain
  3. Adding as much gear/supply storage as possible
  4. Adding bug out bike recommended accessories
  5. Stashing some repair components and essential repair tools
  6. Getting in shape, staying in shape, and practicing your bug out!!

If you do these 6 actions, you’ll have a bug out bike and plan that you can rely on when the SHTF.

What did I miss? Which badass bug out bike accessories have you added? Got a picture of your rig? I’d love to see it in the comments below.

Another day another series of disturbing things being reported in the headlines. The shooting in Chicago will no doubt hurt race relations as the media celebrate having something which raises ratings. Nevermind the countless others that are shot and killed every week in that city. Nope – no protests and no outrage as criminals commit crimes. The officer in this shooting will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Somehow the protestors and other “victims” of this crime will demand more – whatever that is.

12 Natural Cold Remedies to Help You Feel Better

Click here to view the original post.

It’s that stuffy head, runny nose, nasty cold time of year.  Viruses run amok when the temperatures drop, so it’s the season to catch a cold.  As the old saying goes, a cold lasts a week, but 7 days if you treat it. You can’t do a whole lot to “cure” a cold, but there are quite a few ways to help make the symptoms more tolerable (and these natural cold remedies do not include a trip to the pharmacy).

Why pharmaceutical cold remedies should not be your first choice

While many people run to the drugstore at the first sign of a sniffle, it’s important to remember that sometimes the side effects can be worse than the symptoms you’re trying to treat.

Antihistamines are supposed to stop the watering eyes, runny noses and scratchy throats but result in severe drowsiness for most people.  Other common side effects are dizziness, headaches, dry mouth, dry eyes, and fatigue.

Decongestants (like pseudoephedrine or phenylephrine) allege to reduce sinus congestion, but can also dangerously increase heart rates and blood pressure in some people.  Other side effects are Restlessness, insomnia, tremors, and anxiety.

Phenylpropanolamine (PPA), another common ingredient in cold and flu medicines, can increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke, especially in women ages 19-45.

For people who take  monoamine oxidase inhibitors or SSRI antidepressants, the above medication types can cause lethal interactions.

OTC Cough Medicine

Dextromethorphan, the most common active ingredient in over-the-counter cough medicine, can be deadly if the recommended dosage is exceeded.  As well, it is one of the most abused OTCs for those seeking a quick “high”.  Common side effects of dextromethorphan are drowsiness, nausea, confusion, and dizziness.  Expectorants and suppressants can cause either constipation or diarrhea.

Medicated Nasal Sprays

Over the counter medicated nasal sprays work quickly to open the nasal passages, but if they are used for more than 3-5 days in a row, they can result in more congestion than you had in the first place due to the “rebound effect” or rhinitis medicamentosa.  When this occurs, the swelling of the nasal passages can become permanent, requiring surgical intervention.

A collection of natural cold remedies

You can get relief without diving into the chemicals. Following, find links to DIY home remedies that you can make yourself, as well as links to homeopathic and herbal pre-made remedies.

We keep these remedies on hand, as well as the ingredients for making them. Viruses are normally short-lived at our home, or at least the intense part of the sickness.

  1. Try a DIY Healing Vapor Rub. This one is simple to make, and if you keep some basic essential oils on hand, you most likely have everything you need already to whip this up. (I made this for my daughter recently and it was very soothing.)
  2. A fragrant, steaming cup of herbal tea can make everything better. This article discusses the herbal teas you should have in your home arsenal, including several that will help soothe cold symptoms.
  3. Breathe Free by Rootology contains a combination of 13 herbal  extracts, tested for purity and strength. This remedy reduces congestion, alleviates sinus pressure, and  relieves a runny nose.
  4. Add a Eucalyptus Shower Bomb to a steamy shower. The moist, scented air will help the sufferer breathe more easily.
  5. This Honey, Lemon, and Ginger cough syrup will not only relieve cough symptoms but also help to boost your immunity.
  6. Fire cider is a traditional remedy that has been used for centuries. Unfortunately, it usually takes a few weeks to be ready. This easy recipe provides instant gratification (and relief).
  7. Speaking of your immune system, this immune-boosting smoothie will help make your system powerful enough to fight off illness before it happens, or to battle a cold effectively if you already have one.
  8. This is a guide to the different herbs you can use to make your own cough syrup based on your specific symptoms.
  9. Studies show that when zinc comes into contact with the rhinovirus (the virus that causes colds)it can prevent replication, shortening the amount of time that the sufferer is ill. One study recommends one lozenge every two hours. Lozenges and syrups, as opposed to capsules, are the recommended treatment.
  10. Nothing tastes better when you’re sick than soup made with homemade chicken or turkey broth. I can broth to be pulled out when the bugs strike our house. Here’s the recipe we use for the basis of our homemade soup. (Hint: the more garlic you add, the more healing power your soup will have.)
  11. Taking large doses of Vitamin C is a fairly common practice, and studies show that it can be effective in reducing the duration of cold symptoms. This website offers several different Vitamin C protocols you can try. Be sure to only use a high-quality Vitamin C supplement when you are using it therapeutically.
  12. Elderberry extract is often used for colds, but studies show it is more effective in treating the flu. Sometimes it can be difficult to determine whether your illness is caused by a cold virus or a flu virus, and elderberry does have antiviral properties, so taking it certainly won’t hurt you. Sambucol is the only standardized elderberry extract that has been used in studies. You can purchase it here or make your own syrup.

Is Stockpiling Food Even Ethical?

You would be surprised how many times I have been asked – especially by Christians — whether stockpiling is morally right. Or should we call it jealously hording supplies?

I have no doubt of the touchiness of this subject, and how it can really tick many folks off and offend others. I’m not going to dance around this subject, but I desire to hit it head on and answer the question as I have in the past.

I will be right up front and honest. I am a Christian.  I do my best to filter the choices I make in my life through the lens of the Bible. So with that said, you can stop reading this article, or continue on at the risk of being angry and offended.

So, is stockpiling right? I believe if you have a family, you must care for them. Living in a world that grows increasingly unstable by the minute, I have come to believe stockpiling is vitally important. I look at the biblical example of Joseph in the book of Genesis. Joseph was the boy who was sold by his brother, jailed unjustly in Egypt, and then rose to prominence in Pharaoh’s court after interpreting Pharaoh’s dream about a future seven-year famine. Joseph built vast storage systems in the land of the Pyramids — so vast, in fact, that it allowed the Egyptians to eat heartily during the famine and sell surplus grain to foreigners. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul wrote that a man who didn’t take care of and provide for his family was worse than any unbeliever.

The Easiest Way To Store A Month’s Worth Of Emergency Food!

So, yes, I do believe stockpiling is morally right. In fact in many ways, I think it is very prudent for anyone who desires to ensure that his or her family weathers a major crisis.

The Dilemma

I think the real dilemma is, do you help others who are in need during a crisis? I met a guy who was not going to let anyone ever have his rice, beans or MREs. I asked him if someone knocked on his door during a major disaster what would be his response. He scowled a bit and said, “If anyone steps foot on my land, they will be dead long before they reach my door”.

Undoubtedly, some people reading this article agree with him.

I am a gun owner, a huge Second Amendment advocate, and I would defend my family. However, I could not kill my elderly neighbors if they knocked on my door starving and asking for a handful of food. Could I kill the couple a mile down the road with three young children and a new baby? Could you?

I sure could stop someone with lethal force who wanted to kill my wife and kids, but morally can I kill someone who asks for food? No, I cannot. Nor should you. That is not justifiable self-defense. It is cold-blooded murder.

The moral dilemma of stockpiling is how to respond to people asking for help. For me, I will help who I can. But I must put my family first. I must be sure my children have food and water, my wife has the nourishment she needs, and my parents and siblings have what they need. But I will not employ lethal force unless my life and that of my family is in danger.

In closing, each of us must decide how we will respond in a crisis when people come asking for help. They will come. And while some may come looking for trouble and to take your family’s sustenance, many will not. Not everyone is going to devolve into a monster. How you treat those people may in fact determine if you stay alive.

The IRS ‘Cheat Code’ that Obama Doesn’t Want You to Know About

Click here to view the original post.

This Little-Known IRS “Cheat Code” Unlocks an Investment that Obama Does Not Want You to Know About…

Obama would like you to think that the ONLY way to save for retirement is by putting money into the stock market.

You get an IRA or 401(k) and then you load up on stocks and bonds, right? You feed the Wall Street beast.

But I’m sure that I don’t need to tell you that this “beast” can bite the hand that feeds it. It bit Americans hard in 2008, when Wall Street tanked and took the nation down with it. Now, there are indications that it may soon do it again.

These 4 Market Crash Signals Are Flashing Red

Many experts – like Peter Schiff and Gerald Celente – are predicting “imminent stock market crash”. Now you can add John Hussman’s name to the list.

Hussman, a former professor of economics, uses four signals to predict stock market peaks and crashes. These signals correctly predicted the peaks in 1972, 2000 and 2007. Each of these peaks was followed by a dramatic crash.

Now, for the first time since the last financial crisis, ALL FOUR signals have appeared again.

This is why it’s time to consider getting your retirement out of stocks and bonds and into assets that will help you weather the coming financial storm.

How the 408(m)(3) “Cheat Code” Works

Thankfully you have options. Did you know that you can move your retirement savings out of stocks, and KEEP your tax-advantaged status?

Have you heard about Section 408(m)(3)? It’s a little-known cousin of Section 401(k) of IRS code. I like to call it the “cheat code” that unlocks investments you simply can’t find on Wall Street. Here’s what I mean…

Section 408(m)(3) lets you open a Precious Metals “Self Directed” IRA and put REAL gold and silver into a tax-advantaged account.

Here are four good reasons to consider this IRS “cheat code”…

REASON #1: Precious metals can protect you during times of economic uncertainty (like right now), and are a hedge against inflation.

REASON #2: Unlike stocks, gold and silver will NEVER go to zero. They will always be worth something.

REASON #3: Since 2001, gold has MASSIVELY outperformed the stock market, by over six times!

REASON #4: Gold and silver are recognized around the world as currency. This means you could use precious metals to pay for goods and services if something catastrophic ever happened to the dollar, a scenario that looks more probable every year.

Trump Just Shared These 11 Words of Warning for the USD and Gold

Click here to view the original post.

Donald Trump Warns “Dollar is Going Down”… Proves It’s No Joke by Rejecting Dollars for Gold… Here’s Why…

I don’t know how you feel about Donald Trump. But when it comes to business and the economy, few know it better.

So why did Trump accept three 32-oz gold bars as payment on office space he owns?

Trump’s explanation will infuriate those at the Federal Reserve:

“The dollar is going down and it’s not a pretty picture, and it’s not being sustained by proper policy and proper thinking. This was an opportunity to show people what’s happening with the dollar…”

This is no publicity stunt. In fact, Trump was quick to add that he plans to continue to do business in gold, saying, “Maybe it’s going to set a trend.”

Trump is dead serious about owning gold, and here’s something that proves it…

The Shocking Discovery Found on Page 36 of Trump’s Public Financial Disclosure

As part of his presidential campaign, Trump must submit a public financial disclosure. That’s when a shocking discovery was made on page 36:

Trump owns a lot of gold.

And I’m not talking about paper gold or shares in a gold stock or ETF. I’m talking about real physical gold.

How much gold does he own? According to the report, somewhere between $100,001 and $250,000. At today’s prices, this means he may be holding as many as 225 ounces of gold!

When Trump says the dollar is going down, you know these aren’t empty words. He believes it, and he’s acquiring gold to protect a portion of his wealth.

The Next Collapse Will Happen Suddenly and You Might Not Have Time to React

Gold has been a recognized form of money for thousands of years. And as the dollar goes down, more people will flock to gold as a time-tested currency and store of wealth.

Jim Rickards says, “When a collapse happens, it will happen quickly. You won’t see it coming. There won’t be time to run out and buy gold, and it probably will not even be available at that stage. You need to prepare now.”

Act now BEFORE the collapse happens… and gold is still available. Get this FREE Info Kit on Gold.

You’ll learn how Gold can protect your savings during times of uncertainty (like right now). Plus, you’ll discover the IRS “Loophole” to legally move your IRA or 401(k) to a “Self Directed” Precious Metals IRA.

“The Suunto M-3 D Compass is a baseplate style adventure compass with a declination adjustment that is optimized for use in forested or mountainous terrain where you can rarely see your destination. I’ve been using mine for 4 years, ever since I became really interested in off-trail hiking and navigation and started teaching those skills as a instructor for the Appalachian Mountain Club.”

Video: Prepare to survive in your car during a winter storm

Midwest. If  your car slips off the road in an isolated area, during a blizzard, a routine drive to visit the family can turn into a nightmare.

by Leon Pantenburg

Nationwide attention was brought to winter survival in a stalled vehicle in 2006.

In December, Californian James Kim, 35, died in Oregon’s Rogue River Wilderness after leaving his wife and children to get help. The family car was stuck in snow on a remote road for several days.

Mr. Kim departed from the car, he  left the road and apparently got lost in the deep snow. He bushwhacked five miles down steep canyons, covering about eight miles through rough country, but ending up only about a mile as the crow flies from his car. Mr Kim’s body was found several days later, and he had apparently died of  hypothermia His family was found alive in their car a few days later. (To view the complete story, click on Kim Tragedy video)

Here are some things you can do for a car trip – before you leave –  to make that road trip safer.

  • Leave a note, telling someone your route, and when you intend to reach your destination.  If you don’t arrive on schedule, the designated person should contact the area highway patrol or state police. If you have changes in plan, call that person to update the schedule.
  • Warm clothing: Make sure everyone in the vehicle has, as a minimum, a warm coat, hat, gloves and boots along. Throw in a couple of blankets and a sleeping bag in the trunk for extra protection.
  • Lots of Gas: The vehicle should have a full tank of gas before you leave to go anywhere. Top off the gas tank when it gets to about half full.
  • Daytime travel: If possible, schedule your travel in the daytime.
  • Known routes:  Only travel routes you know to be safe – not rural service roads and cut-off roads that are unfamiliar to you.
  • Food and Water: Assemble a complete emergency kit to carry in your car. Periodically update the kit by checking the food and water and making sure you have spare batteries for emergency flashlights.  These days you can acquire car chargers and solar charging kits for cell phones.

Winter survival can start by assembling a selection of easily-obtained items. Here are some suggestions from survival expert Peter Kummerfeldt on items to  include in a  car kit.

The Post-Antibiotic Era is Finally Upon Us

Click here to view the original post.

pills wikimediaAntibiotics have rightfully earned their place as one of the most important medical advances of the 20th century. Many of you reading this are alive today because of antibiotics, as are many of your parents and grandparents. It’s a marvel of the modern world that has given us so much life.

Unfortunately, we abused this gift. We used these antibiotics so much that now, many of the infections we used to be able to treat have evolved to resist them. These “superbugs” now threaten to derail decades of medical progress.

Someday soon we may be living in what scientists have dubbed, the “post-antibiotic world.” This is a world where the slightest nick or cut could be a death sentence, and where infections that were once conquered can make a devastating comeback. Unfortunately, the beginning stages of this new era have finally arrived.

The last line of antibiotic defence against some serious infections is under threat, say experts who have identified a gene that enables resistance to spread between bacteria in China.

The gene, called mcr-1, allows a range of common bacteria, including E coli, to become resistant to the last fully functional class of antibiotics, the polymyxins. This gene, they say, is widespread in bugs called Enterobacteriaceae carried by both pigs and people in south China and is likely to spread worldwide.

The gene is easily transferred from one strain of bacteria to another. Enterobacteriaceae are capable of causing a range of diseases, from pneumonia to serious blood infections. Some of the strains of Enterobacteriaceae with the gene have epidemic potential, say experts in the Lancet Infectious Diseases journal.

“These are extremely worrying results,” said Prof Jian-Hua Liu from South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou, author of the report. “Our results reveal the emergence of the first polymyxin resistance gene that is readily passed between common bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, suggesting that the progression from extensive drug resistance to pandrug resistance is inevitable.”

Keep in mind that the only reason why these “polymyxins” were still effective, is that they are an older class of antibiotics that are rarely used, due to their toxicity. It’s a last resort for people infected with bugs that are resistant to everything else. Once this resistance spreads there will be a whole host of superbugs out there, to which there will be no antibiotic treatment options.

The fact that an outdated treatment is the best our hospitals have to offer, just goes to show that modern science isn’t up to the task of creating new antibiotics. This field of research isn’t like computers, where new advances keep arriving every few years with precise regularity. It seems that antibiotic research, at least as we know it today, has finally reached its peak. And even if science could invent a new antibiotic, what’s to stop future pathogens from becoming immune to it as well?

I suspect it wouldn’t take long, because human behavior isn’t going to change any time soon. In a sense, antibiotics fall under the “tragedy of the commons.” Any unregulated resource that is commonly shared by everyone, will eventually be destroyed. We all need to act in our own self-interest to survive and thrive, but when that instinct is applied to a resource that doesn’t belong to anyone, we quickly abuse that resource. Because human beings don’t want to be sick, and because livestock owners want to produce more food, any new antibiotic that is invented will inevitably be abused until it is worthless for everyone.

So it’s time to accept that the post-antibiotic era is unavoidable. We’ll either have to invent an entirely new method of treatment, or go back to some of the treatments we used in the early 20th century. Perhaps we’ll utilize some mixture of the two. In any case, antibiotics are very close to becoming useless, and until alternative solutions are ironed out the world is going to be quite a bit more dangerous than it was before.

12 Off-Grid Ways Your Grandparents Re-Used Old Newspapers (That You Should Try)

12 Off-Grid Ways Your Grandparents Re-Used Old Newspapers

Over the past couple of decades, Americans has gone crazy for recycling. Most communities have a recycling program, and we feel good about saving our cans, bottles, boxes and newspapers and putting them at our curbs for a weekly pick-up.

But long before the phrase “reduce, reuse and recycle” was ever coined, your grandparents used their old newspapers for a wide variety of tasks.

As you develop a more frugal lifestyle, it is time to think of all the many ways you can repurpose newspapers in your own home and garden. Here are 12:

1. Glass and window cleaner. Crimple up some newspaper and then dip it into a mixture of one part white vinegar and three parts water. You will get streak-free results that are much better than with any chemical-laden commercial window cleaner and cloth. Hint: Wear rubber gloves. The newsprint will not transfer to your windows, but it might get on your hands if you’re not careful.

2. Fire starter. Try tightly rolled pieces of newspaper as fire starters for your fireplace, bonfire or outdoor grill.

3. Seed pots. You can make your own seed pots by following these easy steps:

  • Cut sheets of newspaper in halves or thirds, depending on the size of seed pot you want. Avoid pages with color because the ink contains heavy metals.
  • Roll the newspaper so that it circles a glass jar or aluminum can with a few inches of paper, also extending above the opening of the container.
  • Push the paper that is above the container opening inside, so that the pieces are securely wrapped around the lip of the jar or can.
  • Turn the container over and gently remove the jar or cup.
  • Use the bottom of the jar or can to tamp down the inverted ends, so the bottom of the newspaper pot is secure.
  • Add soil and seeds, and the seed pot is ready to plant. The newspaper holds moisture so that your growing plant will not be over- or under-watered.

4. Weed barrier. Use newsprint to block weeds out of a raised bed. Simply cover the bed with layers of newspaper and water the paper before you fill the bed with dirt and other organic matter. The newsprint will help keep weeds out and moisture in.

5. Gift wrap. Forget store-bought wrapping paper. Newsprint works great. You can even customize your gifts by using the sports sections for sports fans, the fashion section for the fashionistas on your gift list or the Sunday comics for kids. Shredded newspaper also makes for a great filling for gift baskets or gift bags.

6. Packing. You can use your newspaper to wrap your valuables when you are moving or shipping items. It is lightweight, effective and you can’t beat the cost.

12 Off-Grid Ways Your Grandparents Re-Used Old Newspapers

7. Liner paper. Use your newspaper to line drawers and shelves in your pantry or in your refrigerator. It will help absorb spills and odors.

8. Fruit ripener. Did you know you could hasten the ripening process along of certain fruits by wrapping them in newspaper? The next time you have under-ripe avocadoes, peaches or other fruit, give this trick a try.

9. Compost. Add strips of newspaper into your worm bin and mix well with your grass clippings. The paper helps absorb odors and makes a great bedding for your worms.

This Cool-To-The-Touch Lantern Provides 100,000 Hours Of Emergency Backup Lighting

10. Kitty litter box. Use newspaper to line you litter box. It is cheap and effective. You also can use layers of newspaper to housetrain your new puppy.

11. Shoe and boot shaper. Use rolls of newspaper in your shoes, boots and handbags to help them keep their shape between wearing or using.

12. Furniture and counter protector. Do you have a messy cooking or cleaning job to do? Place sheets of newspaper down on your work surface before you begin. It not only protects your floors and furniture from damage, but it makes clean-up a breeze.

Newspapers are printed on uncoated ground wood paper (called newsprint), which is made by grinding wood pulp without removing the lignin and other components of wood pulp.

By weight and volume, newspapers are the largest part of most curbside recycling program. Before you throw this Sunday’s paper in the recycling pile, why not first think about all the jobs you can do with it yourself?

Turkey: The Country ISIS Uses As A Home Base And Where It Has Sold 800 Millions Dollars Of Oil

Click here to view the original post.

ISIS - Public Domain
By Michael Snyder – End Of The American Dream

If we truly do want to get rid of ISIS, why aren’t we doing anything about the Islamic governments that are funding them, aiding them and facilitating the sale of their oil?  As you will see below, ISIS fighters hop back and forth over the Turkish border with impunity, there are “direct dealings between Turkish officials and ranking ISIS members”, and more than $800,000,000 worth of ISIS oil has been sold in Turkey.  If these things are true, action must be taken.  According to a recent Rasmussen Reports survey, 92 percent of Americans consider Islamic terrorism to be a serious threat to the United States, and a Washington Post-ABC News survey found that 83 percent of registered voters believe that a terror attack that causes a large amount of casualties inside the United States is likely in the near future.  The American people clearly want ISIS to be dealt with, so why isn’t the Obama administration doing anything to go after the state sponsors of such terror?

At this point, most Americans have absolutely no idea what is taking place in Iraq and Syria, and the mainstream media is certainly not being straight with us.  That is why I want to share with you some key excerpts from an amazing article that was written by award-winning journalist and best-selling author Dr. Nafeez Ahmed.  According to his bio, he has “written for the Independent on Sunday, The Independent, The Scotsman, Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Huffington Post, New Statesman, Prospect Magazine, Le Monde Diplomatique, among many others.”  His recent article entitled “NATO is harbouring the Islamic State” is a must read.  In particular, what he has to say about the relationship between the Turkish government and ISIS is extremely eye opening…

A senior Western official familiar with a large cache of intelligence obtained this summer from a major raid on an ISIS safehouse told the Guardian that “direct dealings between Turkish officials and ranking ISIS members was now ‘undeniable.’”

The same official confirmed that Turkey, a longstanding member of NATO, is not just supporting ISIS, but also other jihadist groups, including Ahrar al-Sham and Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Syria. “The distinctions they draw [with other opposition groups] are thin indeed,” said the official. “There is no doubt at all that they militarily cooperate with both.”

But it isn’t just that Turkey and ISIS have “direct dealings” with each other.  In his article, Ahmed goes on to explain that ISIS uses Turkish territory as a home base from which to conduct attacks, and ISIS trucks are able to travel back and forth across the border and throughout Turkey quite freely

The former ISIS fighter told Newsweek that Turkey was allowing ISIS trucks from Raqqa to cross the “border, through Turkey and then back across the border to attack Syrian Kurds in the city of Serekaniye in northern Syria in February.” ISIS militants would freely travel “through Turkey in a convoy of trucks,” and stop “at safehouses along the way.”

The former ISIS communication technician also admitted that he would routinely “connect ISIS field captains and commanders from Syria with people in Turkey on innumerable occasions,” adding that “the people they talked to were Turkish officials… ISIS commanders told us to fear nothing at all because there was full cooperation with the Turks.”

Unless the U.S. military and our intelligence agencies are completely blind, deaf and dumb, the Obama administration surely must know all of this already.

So why are they allowing it to happen?

Be Afraid: State Dept Issues WORLDWIDE Travel Alert for All U.S. Citizens

Click here to view the original post.

Contributed by Melissa Dykes of The Daily Sheeple

Citing dangers posed by ISIS, al-Qa’ida, and other terrorist groups, the U.S. State Dept. has officially issued a travel alert for all U.S. citizens, and this time, it is worldwide.

That’s right, folks. While the agency normally issues alerts and warnings into various specific countries, such as issuing an alert for travel to Sierra Leone during last year’s Ebola outbreak for example, this time the alert is essentially for any time an American gets on any plane going anywhere.

The reason? “Increased terrorist threats.”

The alert says,

Current information suggests that ISIL (aka Da’esh), al-Qa’ida, Boko Haram, and other terrorist groups continue to plan terrorist attacks in multiple regions.  These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics, using conventional and non-conventional weapons and targeting both official and private interests.  This Travel Alert expires on February 24, 2016.

Authorities believe the likelihood of terror attacks will continue as members of ISIL/Da’esh return from Syria and Iraq.  Additionally, there is a continuing threat from unaffiliated persons planning attacks inspired by major terrorist organizations but conducted on an individual basis.  Extremists have targeted large sporting events, theatres, open markets, and aviation services.  In the past year, there have been multiple attacks in France, Nigeria, Denmark, Turkey, and Mali.  ISIL/Da’esh has claimed responsibility for the bombing of a Russian airliner in Egypt.

The alert goes on to warn that we should “exercise vigilance when in public places or using transportation”; “be aware of immediate surroundings and avoid large crowds or crowed places”; and “exercise particular caution during the holiday season and at holiday festivals or events.”

In other words, every time we leave our homes to do pretty much anything this holiday season, we should first and foremost be scared of terrorists.

That’s right, because the alert does not expire until February 24, 2016 (they made sure to even include Valentine’s Day).

Anyone else starting to feel like we stepped into a time machine and went back to the months after September 11, 2001? What are they going to do next, warn people to buy duct tape and plastic sheeting for their windows and doors?

Or maybe they’ll start playing that Cold War archive film about how to Duck and Cover everywhere as a public service.

You know what’s coming next… that’s right. The color-coded fear chart.

I think it looked something like this:

However, her advice was in stark contrast to the suggestions that are typical of most police departments.

Lanier told Anderson Cooper that “Your options are run, hide or fight,” before adding that even the best police departments wouldn’t be able to arrive on the scene until after most victims have been killed. She then encouraged citizens to fight back against the gunmen if they are in a good position to do so. “If you’re in a position to try and take the gunman down, to take the gunman out, it’s the best option for saving lives before police can get there.”

Lanier admitted that this may seem counterintuitive, since it flies in the face of what police have been telling citizens for decades. “We always tell people, ‘don’t take action, call 911, don’t intervene in the robbery.’ We’ve never told people, ‘take action.’ This is a different scenario.”

Of course, none of this is really counterintuitive or strange for any normal human being with a sense of self-preservation. Lanier thinks that she’s providing groundbreaking advice, when in reality, average citizens have always been in a better position to defend themselves and to stop terror attacks than the police. Ironically, she’s preaching this message to a city with some of the most stringent gun laws in the country, and where it is next to impossible to receive a concealed carry permit. I suppose she expects us to fight these active shooters with sticks and pocket knives.

Large Event Safety Tips

Click here to view the original post.

Staying safe in a crowdPlanning on attending a huge festival or other sizable event that’s sure to draw hundreds, if not thousands, of people? As fun as these events are, it’s important to stay safe, as various unpleasant things can occur. Rather than finding yourself in a sticky situation or facing serious injury, learn how to best protect yourself. Check out the following tips to help you get started:

Familiarize Yourself

Become as familiar as you can with the event surroundings. Most events provide maps, so be sure to obtain one and keep it on you at all times. You never know when you may need it, and it will also help you locate all exits, restrooms, concessions, first aid tents, etc.

Remember to Hydrate

It doesn’t take long to become severely dehydrated, which leaves you susceptible to dizzy spells and fainting among other problems, particularly if it’s crazy-hot out. Bring a canteen with you or other refillable water bottle and remember to stay hydrated throughout the event.

Have a Plan

If you’re going to the event with a large group, have a plan in case one of you gets lost. Designate an area as your meet-up spot, such as by the restrooms or a certain booth. Ensure everyone has their cell phones on them as well, which you can also use as part of your check-in system.

Don’t Make Yourself a Target

Forget waving your wallet around or carrying bags that pickpockets can easily stick their paws in. This makes you an obvious target! A money clip is a great thing to have since you wear it under your clothes and therefore keep it separate from other necessary items such as your phone and keys. If possible, hide important items within your car.

Remain Aware

Whatever else, make certain you stay aware of what’s going on around you. If a situation happening near you seems suspicious or dangerous, walk away from it and alert any authorities if you think it necessary.

Use these tips to stay safe during all large events you attend! Have fun!

The Age Of Offense

Click here to view the original post.

BIG age of offense

I wonder what anthropologists in the future will think, looking back on 2015 and reading our newspapers. If there is anything that has stood out this year, it’s that the year can be called the Year of Offense. American liberals have fallen all over themselves in an effort to be offended and to scream about their offense, to the point where it seems to overrun the real news all too often.

It was bad enough when the #BlackLivesMatter movement started, raising an outcry only drowned out by their own violence every time a black criminal was killed by a white police officer.

Then it started getting ridiculous when they got offended by the southern Civil War Battle Flag. That led to offenses for every monument and reminder of the Civil War that ever existed. Now, it’s reached a point where students in colleges and universities are being offended by anything said, which doesn’t agree with their narrow world view.

These claims of “microagressions” have reached a point where universities are at the brink of not being able to operate anymore. The University of Missouri has been all but shut down, by students protesting a combination of racial prejudice and offense from contrary viewpoints. The football team refused to play, ultimately leading to the President of the university resigning.

In my opinion, the university president was wrong to resign. All he did was prove in the minds of the students that they were right. But the only cases of racism that were brought up as “evidence” that the university was racist, were things done by individuals, not the university itself. Those aren’t the fault of the university, although resigning over them makes it look like the president took responsibility for them.

What he should have done is to kick all the striking football players off the team; but he apparently didn’t have the guts to do so. Their scholarship contract specifically states that they have to participate in all team activities, or lose their scholarships and their places on the team. Had he stood up to the football team, instead of caving to their demands, the situation may have ended.

But he didn’t. So now we have a hunger strike by a student who claims that he is the victim of racial discrimination. Of course, he and the mainstream news media is hiding the facts that his dad made over six million dollars last year and his net worth is over 20 million.

I guess that just doesn’t fit their picture of a poor, disadvantaged black student, who is being mistreated by the horrible white establishment of the school.

True or Not True?

So much of this anymore is about creating images that support the progressive left’s agenda. Truth is no longer an issue in news reporting or even in life. As long as it supports their agenda, it’s okay, regardless of what that means has to be done.

Apparently there are two issues being complained about in Missou. One is the racial discrimination and the other is microagressions causing offenses. The two seem to be intertwined, but each can stand on its own as well.

It doesn’t really matter, as it’s all about having the right buzzwords and the right image anyway. Apparently they think that if they can make themselves out to be the mistreated underdog, then they will win. Nothing else matters.

This has been coming for quite some while. I mentioned how liberals have been seeking offense everywhere they turn. It’s almost become a game with them, seeing who can come up with the newest thing to call “racist” or to be offended about. Both are the same, considering that the word “racism” now means whatever they want it to mean in order to back up their point.

Racism has become the liberal trump card. In their minds, all they have to do is play that card and they’ve automatically won. So, they play it as frequently and as loudly as they can. Unfortunately, this has scared many conservatives, who are thinking of what “racism” used to mean and don’t want to be branded with that name.

The students at Missou have been effective enough in their demonstrations that they’ve managed to spread their offense off campus. There are now at least three other campuses which have decided that they have the same grievances as the University of Missouri, even though those grievances haven’t really been clearly stated. That doesn’t matter though, as they are in agreement and standing together with their fraternal brothers and sisters at Missou.

So, what are their grievances? I haven’t been able to get much of a handle on them, but there are a couple of things that have stood out.

The first is that the President of University of Missouri was white. Apparently since all whites, especially white males are racist, that makes the university racist. To go with that, there aren’t enough black college professors on campus to make the black students feel comfortable. Obviously this is a crime of the highest order and must be addressed.

If we assume for a minute, that the university was avoiding hiring black professors, could it be that not enough blacks applied for those positions? I have no idea of how many black college professors there are, but maybe there aren’t enough to go around. Could it be that this horrendous crime is more an indictment against the black community than against the university? Oops, we’d better not go there.

The other big issue that has come up is the whole issue of offenses. Apparently modern college students have evolved to the point where they can’t stand a contrary opinion. Anything that opposes their world view, spoon fed to them by their liberal professors, causes them to go running and screaming back to their “safe zone” where they don’t have to hear such disturbing things.

This is an indictment on our entire educational system, especially at the secondary and pre-graduate levels. If there is anything that college students should be exposed to, it’s contrary opinions. How else are they ever going to be able to make a rational decision for themselves, about what they believe?

Or have our institutions of higher learning turned into institutions of higher indoctrination? Has the idea of making sure that the next generation be politically correct overcome the need to educate them? Are college professors so afraid that a contrary idea might actually be more attractive to their students than the liberal milk they’ve been feeding them? If their liberalism is so great, then why can’t it stand up to those contrary ideas?

The real danger here is that by shielding those children from other ideas, the universities are keeping them children. They are unable to think for themselves. Even worse, they are unprepared for facing real life, when they get out of college. How is a young man or young woman going to face a boss, when that boss tells them to do something that they don’t want to do? Are they going to cry and run to their safe zone? Will they quit?

Or are they going to file a law suit against their boss for offending them? I’m pretty sure that I’ve been offended by every boss that I ever had, how are these oversensitive children going to fare in the workplace?

It’s sad that our society has been reduced to this point. One of our founding principles is freedom of speech. That concept is enshrined in the very First Amendment to the Constitution. Not that it was added later, for the Continental Congress refused to vote it into law, without the Bill of Rights, the first ten Amendments to the Constitution. That’s how far back our right of Freedom of Speech goes.

Where the Real Danger Lies

Yet Freedom of Speech is in real danger today. Political correctness is striving to destroy it. Left-wing politicians are talking about limiting Freedom of Speech, so that people not be offended.

Of course, the only ones they are concerned about protecting from offense are their left-wing supporters. As they have so clearly demonstrated, they couldn’t care less if those on the right are offended. That’s immaterial, because those on the right are automatically labeled “racist.”

Freedom of Speech means that people will be offended. It means that contrary opinions will be raised up. That’s good. For it is in the crucible of discussing and debating those different opinions that great ideas are formed.

Ideas that cross political boundaries and bond us together into a society that works for all of us, rather than just for some of us. Without that discussion, only the ideas of the ruling party are allowed and freedom is lost.

Perhaps that’s the idea; perhaps the whole PC argument is nothing more than a way of taking away our freedom and making us bow down to the inevitability of liberal control. We need our Freedom of Speech, just as much as we need to be offended by other people’s ideas.

For through that offense, we can begin to see their viewpoint, their lives and their struggles. Only then, can we become part of the solution in finding a system which works for all.

Easy Turkey Gravy Recipe

Click here to view the original post.

After last week’s post about how to roast a turkey, we got several requests to post how to make gravy. So this week’s recipe, we will share our quick and easy method to making turkey gravy using the drippings from the pan. This method could be used for any roasted turkey, chicken, or even a pot roast. There is plenty of time to make the gravy while your meat has been removed from the oven and is resting.  There are a lot of gravy recipes that can be made ahead of time, using stock, multiple vegetables and seasonings. However, we believe that the best gravy comes from the pan drippings – you’ve already seasoned the turkey, so why not use it? The key to making smooth gravy is to keep the heat low and to whisk, not stir. You also must ‘cook’ the gravy and allow it to simmer which gives the flour time to blend with the drippings and stock – otherwise you end up with gravy that tastes just like flour.  By following the simple recipe below, you will end up with smooth and great tasting gravy each and every time! I want to write a quick thanks to all of you who’ve read the first series, commented, and endured the delays in getting this second season started. There have been technical difficulties that have unfortunately delayed posting, but I can assure you now, that you’ll have a new episode each week. Most of this season is already written, and I look forward to sharing it with you, and reading your thoughts and comments as always. Happy Thanksgiving!

M.A. Thompson

“Good morning,” the voice came soft, cracked and soothing to Jason’s ears. He opened his eyes and adjusted to the dim light of the sunrise peaking through his bedroom window. For a moment, he almost tricked himself into believing it was his old home, the one that had burned down in the first days of the EMP attacks. The one with the cellar that housed his wife and daughter while He and his son made first contact with the D.D.T.F. The feeling was passed in a split second, but it forced Jason to shake himself back into the present reality.

“Hey you,” he said to his wife, and pressed his lips to her forehead. He sat up and looked around the room. Not everyone was able to live inside the community center, but as the elected leader of the new camp, Jason and his family enjoyed a room on the third floor just down the hall from the bathrooms. It had been used as a daycare room and so they enjoyed thin carpeting and soft bright colored walls and a row of windows that still contained a few pieces of finger-painted masterpieces. He’d planned on taking them down when they moved in, but Patty insisted they keep them up.

“They make me happy,” she’d say, “they give me hope that one day we’ll be able to turn this room back into a day care, and kids can paint and play make believe again instead of picking weeds or fetching water and learning to shoot.”

So, the pictures stayed, and so did a few other leftovers from the daycare. Namely, a bookshelf with toys and puzzles and various big lettered books, which his daughter Cathy was just beginning to outgrow. Of course, most of the kid’s items went to the community to be shared, but this little bookshelf was one of the few perks of having helped unite the community after the rebellion against the D.D.T.F. The mattress, an acquisition from a home just outside the community center’s perimeter, was another one of those perks.

Things were beginning to be okay, Jason thought. The morning was peaceful and a feeling of comfort and stability was beginning to replace the vigilant paranoia that had been the norm for the last year and a half. Then he remembered what Tony had found on their supply run the previous afternoon, and the cold familiar worries came crawling back like ice in his veins. He wanted to get up and out of bed before his wife could notice the change in him.

Jason leaned down and kissed his wife once more and shifted out from beneath her. She groaned in protest, but he got out of bed and pulled on an old t-shirt.

“Lots to do today,” he said softly, threading his belt through his jeans and adjusting the holster that hung at his hip.

“You look like a sheriff from the old west,” she said smiling at him from the bed. Jason feigned a tip of the hat, and said, “Thank ya ma’am.”

She chuckled, “You’re cowboy accent is terrible.”

“Well there’s no Stetson on my head, and I’m pretty sure cowboys didn’t carry 9mm semi-automatic Glock’s ,” he added. “So I’ve got some time to work on that accent.” She rolled her eyes and got up from the bed.

“I’m taking Tony out again today,” he said, “we’re gonna head East towards the industrial district.”

“You’re not taking Jim along?” She asked curiously.

He’d hoped she wouldn’t notice, because he didn’t want to raise any suspicion. He elected not to say anything about what they’d seen yesterday. No sense in alarming people until they were sure if there was an actual threat, he figured. Chances are whoever made that weird little scene had moved on, or been chased off or killed by the D.D.T.F. Besides, they were well fortified, and their defensive measures had been tested before and had worked wonderfully. It would take more than a few nut jobs to take what they’d built there.

“I’m sending Jim to check up on the farm,” Jason said, hoping to satiate any suspicion his wife might have. While Jason was relatively confident that there wasn’t any real threat, he preferred to keep his son inside the camp that day.

“Oh?” she replied.

“Yea, Gerald and Mike are just finished building the second manure pit, and their testing out the pipeline today. I figure it’d be good for Jim to get involved in some of the less militaristic aspects around here.”

“Sure,” his wife said, “And you don’t want to be covered in cow shit, so you’re sending your son in your place.”

“And I’d prefer to not be covered in cow shit at the end of the day,” Jason laughed.

“Be careful out there,” she said, and blew him a kiss.

“Always,” he said, and walked out the door.

Jim was already up and in the mess hall spooning down oatmeal and jabbering away with Tony when Jason found him.

“Hey pops,” Jim said, and Tony nodded.

“Hey guys,” said Jason, and sat down next to him with his own bowl of mushy oats.

“Breakfast of champions, eh Mr. Jones?” Tony was always dissing the food, but never in a serious manner. It was his way of keeping things cheerful.

“I suppose you were hoping for Eggs Benedict with mimosa and a fresh, wholegrain bagel served in bed?” Jason chided.

“Steak and eggs actually, a Rib-eye medium rare with two fresh eggs sunny side up and a whole mess of hash browns on the side.”

“That’s not too far out of the question,” Jim cut in, “Gerald’s boys just found three more cows and said they got a possible line on a bull.”

“Damn, that’d be something wouldn’t it?” Tony cooed.

“That reminds me,” Jason said, interrupting the boys’ food fantasies, “I need you to help Gerald with the manure pits today.”

“What?” Jim protested, “I thought we were heading East to the factories to find parts for the rain barrels.”

We are,” Jason said, indicating Tony and himself, “but I need you to make sure Gerald and his boys have everything under control with those pits. We’ll be planting soon and that fertilizer is going to be just as vital as that rain water.”

Jim looked disappointed but he didn’t complain. They finished breakfast and prepared to head out. Manny found them as they were loading the truck and gave them a list of what he needed, what could work if they couldn’t find those exact parts and where he thought the best places to look might be. Jim hopped on a four-wheeler after mildly protesting his exclusion from the excursion, and headed out towards the farm on the edge of the property where the baseball fields used to be.

Jason knew Jim didn’t think much of the farm, but that was only because he was at the age where he craved action and excitement. To him, the farm was boring, but Jason knew how vital it was to the camp’s survival. It was impressive too, thanks to Gerald’s expertise and his three sons strong backs. They had chickens, goats, cows, and now it sounded like possibly a bull was on the way. Jason was glad he’d sent Jim to work the farm that day, and hoped the work would get more attractive to him.

Tony and Jason made their way through the front gate, past the machine gun nest that was now manned with their people and not the government soldiers. They headed east out of town and made it to the industrial park by roughly ten am. The pickin was good, and after the day they had yesterday, Jason was relieved to have such luck. They found a stockpile of gravel, sand and charcoal, and loaded as much as possible into the truck, and made plans to make several more runs. Jason knew that it wasn’t exactly what Manny had in mind, but with this stuff, they could make a great bio-filter for the water collectors, and that was one hell of a good start.

They returned to camp in high spirits, but as they pulled up to the front gate it was obvious something had gone wrong. Jason’s first thought was of what they had found the day before, and he cursed himself if he’d let them get followed back. He pulled the truck just inside the gate and tore out of it. Two men were running at full speed from the direction of the farm, neither of them were his son. They were waving their hands frantically, and it was clear something horrible had happened. Jason jumped back into the truck and gunned it towards the farm, praying that his son was okay.

If he hadn’t been in such a hurry, he might have noticed the glint from the field goggles far off in the tree line, beyond the fences, beyond the field they’d set with booby traps, at the edge of where the thick woods began. Jason hadn’t noticed it, and the man who’d been careless enough to allow the sun to flash off of his binoculars would never make the mistake again. His commander made sure of it.

Homemade Laundry Soap

Make your own Laundry Soap and save a ton of money

One way I save my family money is by making my own laundry detergent. I have done this for years! I recently added Purification Blend.
A 5 gallon bucket of soap lasts us about 6 months. I add the essential oil 1-2 drops at a time, per load.

I do have a front load set, so I use liquid…not sure powder would work.
I recently read that Fels Naptha was bad for septic systems.
Thanks to twitter I found out, direct from the company, that it is indeed SAFE for septics.

boiling soap

Boiling down the shredded bar of Fels Naptha.
While that is boiling I have my Borax and Washing soda in a 5 gallon bucket. I pour HOT water into that so the powder dissolves

I use an old Salad Shooter to shred the soap. Just cutting it up finely would work. It just dissolves easier this way.

finished product in a 5 gallon bucket
I store it in a 5 gallon bucket.
This is what it looks like after the process is done.
It will gel up overnight and it will be fine to use.
Just stir it as you use it. I use a ladle full per load. I would say about 1/2 cup.

Borax: $5 for a 76-oz. box
Washing soda NOT Baking Soda $3 for a 55-oz. box
Fels-Naptha bar soap (in the laundry section of Ace): $2 for 1 bar

  • 1 bar of Fels Naptha soap, shaved

  • 1 cup of borax

  • 2 cups of washing soda

  • 1 cup of baking soda

How To Make Chocolate Mint Cookies Or Crackers

Click here to view the original post.

In order to know how to make chocolate mint cookies or crackers, you only need four ingredients. You will want to get some Ritz crackers, chocolate chips, peppermint essential oils and crushed peppermint candy canes. Of course, peppermint flavoring would work as well. The first time I tried one of these gems I couldn’t believe they were crackers made into cookies. They taste very similar to “Thin Mint” cookies made by the Girl Scouts. If you need a chocolate fix in the middle of the afternoon this is the recipe for you. Your kids and grandkids will love making these. I prefer dark semi-sweet chocolate, but if you like milk chocolate chips that would work too!

Chocolate Mint Cookies

One sleeve Ritz crackers

12 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Crushed peppermint candy canes

1-2 drops of peppermint oil or flavoring

Equipment needed:

Double boiler, to melt the chocolate chips **if it is too thick add a little vegetable oil to thin the chocolate

Cookie sheet covered with foil and sprayed with vegetable oil

Melt the chocolate in a double boiler like this one: Farberware Classic 2-Qt. Covered Double Boiler. You fill the lower pan with water about 1/3 full and put the chocolate chips in the upper pan and melt them slowly. Be sure and keep checking the lower pan so that it does not become empty. It will ruin the pan if it’s kept cooking without any water in it. Continue stirring the chocolate chips constantly. If you think about it, you could substitute any of your favorite chocolate chip flavors in this recipe. Next, you take each Ritz cracker and dip both sides of them in the melted chocolate gently turning them with a fork. Place the chocolate dipped crackers on a piece of greased aluminum foil. While the chocolate is still warm and wet, sprinkle the chopped candy canes on the crackers. Place the cookie sheet in the refrigerator to let them set firmly.

No Constitutional Right To Homeschool, Supreme Court Justice Says

No Constitutional Right To Homeschool, Supreme Court Justice Says

Parents do not have a right to homeschool under the US Constitution, says Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

Scalia also believes there is no right to school choice within the Constitution.

The conservative justice often is a favorite among those on the right and even among those within the homeschool community, but on these two issues, he strongly differs.

“The notion that everything you care a lot about has to be in the Constitution is a very dangerous notion,” Scalia said during an appearance at Georgetown University. “Because it begins with stuff we all agree upon, ‘Oh, sure, we ought to be able to educate our children the way we want.’ That was one of the early substantive due process [cases] — don’t get me going on substantive due process.”

Parental choice in education is among the important rights not guaranteed in the Constitution, Scalia told the law students at Georgetown University in mid-November, Education Week reported.

Christian Heroes For Christian Kids: Award-Winning Project Is Putting God Back Into History!

The Constitution is “not a perfect Constitution,” and many “important rights are not contained there,” he said. For example, “my right to raise my children the way I want. To teach them what I want them taught, not what Big Brother says. That is not there.”

Educational choice is “simply not in the Constitution” and “I will not enforce it from the bench,” he said.

The Supreme Court did uphold parental choice in two cases in the 1920s with which Scalia seems to disagree. In a case called Pierce vs. Society of Sisters in 1925, it struck down an Oregon law that mandated public school attendance. In another case called Meyer v. Nebraska in 1923, it overturned a state law banning the teaching of foreign languages to children.

No Constitutional Right To Homeschool, Supreme Court Justice Says

“Justice Scalia’s comments show that homeschoolers—and every single family—cannot fear attacks on parental rights solely from the left, but also from the right,” William A. Estrada, the director of federal relations for the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) wrote on the organization’s website.

Estrada noted that Scalia, who is regarded as a conservative, has been asserting this position for years. Scalia made his position clear in a 2000 case called Troxel v. Granville.

“Our U.S. Constitution was drafted by our Founders to limit the role of the federal government, and to leave fully protected every fundamental right, including the right of parents to direct the education and upbringing of their children,” Estrada wrote.

HSLDA chairman Mike Farris wrote a 2006 article in which he said his fear is that a future Supreme Court might use Scalia’s logic to justify a ruling against homeschoolers.

“In short, Scalia believes that no right is protected unless it is expressly stated in the text of the Constitution,” Farris wrote. “While most of us like this theory if it is used to reverse Roe v. Wade, we would be quite alarmed if parental rights were suddenly no longer a protected constitutional right.”

The next President could appoint as many as four Supreme Court Justices, Washington Times writer Dave Boyer recently noted. Boyer pointed out that three justices – Scalia (80), Anthony M. Kennedy (80) and Ruth Bader Ginsburg (83) – will be at least 80 when the next president takes office. A fourth, Stephen G. Breyer, will be 78.

“Justice Scalia’s recent comments are a sobering reminder that we do indeed need an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that enshrines the current Supreme Court precedent protecting parental rights in the black-and-white text of the U.S. Constitution,” Estrada wrote.

What is your reaction to Scalia’s comments? Share your thoughts in the section below:

Today on Tech Preps we will talk about the various para-cord and what we can use it for. This little bit of technology has served us well for many years as a must have in anyone’s kit. There are so many uses paracord that I do not really know where to begin.

I have various forms of this in my kit, my vehicle that I carry with me everywhere. I will go over how it is made, the various types, strengths, and uses. Paracord or “cordage” as it is referred to in the prepper and bush crafting community is one of the best things to have besides a knife and food in the woods. We will talk about why you should have this on you, in your pack, on a knife, in your vehicle and the best kind to buy.

11-23-15 Cool-Paracord-ProjectsThere are a lot of spin offs out there so you can be fooled very easily about the type and quality you might need. I will also talk about some new stuff that is hitting the market called firecord, this is a great thing to have in any bush crafter or bugout bag. The firecord not only has strength of paracord but also has the ability to create tinder within the paracord core itself, so I will discuss this and show photos of this stuff in action.

11-23-15 maxresdefaultI will discuss what I use it for and maybe give you some tips as to what you can use it for and how to store it. I will also give a few tips on how to maintain paracord and it various knots to try to fashion to keep it from slipping on you in load bearing situations. As always we will be taking questions from the chat and taking calls from the audience.
