Natural family planning – you’ve heard the one about the people who use that, right? They’re called parents. No, I hadn’t heard that a million times! The truth is that there is a family planning method – let’s not call it birth control or contraceptive, which it’s not – which is natural, safe, easy to […]

Is Your Amazing Patriot Organization Really a Cult?
Within the patriot community at large there are thousands of groups, from national conglomerates with state and local chapters down to the one-off groups run by this guy or that guy. We get questions sometimes asking “Which group should I join? What groups are good/safe/focused on the right things?” When it comes to choosing a group to affiliate with (or whetherto choose a group at all), only you can make that choice. This article, however, will give you a few points to ponder about where your prospective group is going…and whether you should be on board.
While you may find the title of this article a bit dramatic, you might be surprised to know that the psychological principles that cults employ to control their members are shared by several other non-cult entities. These tactics include social engineering through emotional appeals, manipulation, and even fear. Multi-level marketing companies are one of the first things you might think of in terms of non-religious cults.
But do some patriot organizations fit this as well? Let’s take a look.
In a cult, submission to its leader is mandatory. Some patriot groups expect the same, and leaders foster loyalty to themselves instead of the cause itself. This is most prevalent in groups with a pyramid style
leadership structure. Members of the group view their leader (and those who the leader deems as being “good”) as being the only voice on anything connected with the cause. The leader has unquestioned, unrivaled authority within the group.
Loyalty to the leader is also rewarded, perhaps with greater access to information and/or the leader himself, or a higher level within the organization. In groups like this, the leader promotes those who are most subservient and loyal to him. In some cases, this loyalty can cost the members financially or emotionally, as they are expected to show up whenever and wherever they are ordered to be. Those who do not act on command are seen as disloyal or lesser patriots.
Most patriot groups can work with other groups, even if they don’t necessarily share the exact same platform or chosen courses of action. In some groups, however, there is a view of exclusivity and elitism. They are the only ones doing it “right”; everyone else is at least somewhat “wrong” and therefore lesser. There is an arrogance found in groups like these that is immediately apparent. These groups also tend to engage in open and public denigration of others; since they are the “best” group and the “only ones” who are “truly standing for liberty,” they feel comfortable tearing down other groups with different tactics. This is a natural flow from the leader, who fosters this culture and may even engage in it himself. Any negative feedback they receive is seen as persecution—which the group paints as validation.
Hand in hand with the concept of exclusivity is that of isolation. Cults seek to isolate their members from those who would distract them, point out inconsistencies or threaten the cult’s control. People in these types of patriot groups tend to hang out with each other nearly exclusively. Activities abound for group members, often focused around team-building and bonding, such as shared meals or interests. This has the effect of greater control over the members, especially when paired with an “us against them” mentality. In the patriot movement, often the “them” does not even refer to the government, but to other groups or individuals who are seen as “disruptive” or who don’t subscribe to the group’s loyalty
This term refers to a cult’s propensity to shower the loyal with love and affection. The word “family” is often used to describe the group, and emotional validation is given to members who are living and acting within the group’s guidelines and philosophy. The other side of that is shunning, in which members who question the leader or the group’s practices are cut off and even attacked or publicly denigrated. The ‘love bombing’ works in concert with group think, in which the group’s cohesiveness is based upon observance to all actions, beliefs and policies handed down by the leader. Obedience is rewarded with continued inclusion in the “family.”
In a cult, the leader is seen as having special access to God. In patriot groups with cult-like tendencies, the leader is seen as having special access to “the patriot hierarchy” or higher authorities within the movement. In some cases, the special knowledge refers to “connections” the leader claims to have, real or imagined, within government agencies and/or sources that somehow offer access to information that members can only get from him. Members do not normally directly interface with these higher authorities or sources except at specific times or events, and usually in the presence (or with the express permission of) the group’s leader. In day to day activities, the leader speaks with these authorities or sources himself and then disseminates their “will” or “intelligence” to the rest of the members. Often that “insider information” is used to bolster a leader’s control and validate his orders (“my source at DHS says…”). Members believe that this special access offers their group credibility and a higher standing within the movement. The closer the leader’s perceived relationship with the movement “authorities,” or the more often he refers to or disseminates “secret” information, the more apt these members are to follow his orders. Often, members are expected to act simply based on the fact that the leader has the special information—even if he refuses to share it all with the members.
The concept of cognitive dissonance is fairly well known. In a specific manner relating to the dynamic of a cult-like patriot group, however, there are additional points to consider. Because of the group’s loyalty to the leader, any information at odds with their belief system regarding his power or authority is summarily discarded. Even in the face of evidence of fraud or wrongdoing, members will defend him, honestly believing that in doing so they are defending the movement itself. Those who dare to openly discuss, expose, or even question the leader’s policies or orders are seen as the enemy.
Are All Patriot Groups Cults?
In a word, no. Of course not. Most patriots mean well. Many are looking for a group to belong to, to learn from, to stand with them and offer stability and camaraderie. These are not bad things; if more patriots stood together and acted together a lot more could be accomplished in the name of liberty. Many groups are made up of good, solid people who seek to foster liberty in their communities. Many solid groups may have a slight resemblance to some of these points; these are not cults at all.
The problem arises when an opportunistic, narcissistic or even corrupt person either forms his own group or takes control of an existing one. In many cases, these types of leaders are not satisfied being “members,” and seek power for themselves; they often leave groups to start their own, and people whose loyalty they have already cultivated will follow them. They end up forming the core membership of the new group.
When considering a group to join, look at the dynamic. Loyalty to the leader and the group is not necessarily a bad thing; unfailing obedience or adherence to group policies, however, is cause for concern. Ask yourself the following questions when observing a group:
• Do the members engage in individual liberty activities outside the group or do they only act AS a group?
• Are their actions derived only from information or orders given to them by their leader?
• Do they shun and even deride outsiders, especially former members? Does the list of “approved people” change based on information received from the leader?
• Does their leader have perceived special access to “higher authorities” or intelligence that members only get through him or her?
• Is there an internal hierarchy that shows that loyalty is rewarded with higher position or better access?
• When there are opportunities for action, do the members take initiative on their own? Or do they always consult the leader and wait for approval?
• Are they associated anywhere else? Do they consistently work well with other groups or do they only work with each other?
• Do they exhibit a loyalty to the leader as opposed to the cause itself?
• Is there evidence of cognitive dissonance in regards to the leader or the group itself?
• Does the group see itself as the “best” or “only” group who’s “doing it right”?
Getting Out of It
If you or a friend find yourself in a group that fits the above attributes, there are options. You could try bringing your concerns to leadership, but the very culture that created the situation will naturally ignore or even ostracize you for your concerns. In the end, your only option may be to leave the group, knowing that you may lose friends and contacts doing so. In a toxic patriot group, the chances of you changing it from the inside are next to zero.
Finding the Right Group
There are set environmental factors and cultural aspects of solid groups that are universal, and in the patriot movement it’s no different. These are the things you should be looking for.
• Willingness to learn, even from outside sources. A solid group is interested in mental and intellectual growth, even if it means learning from people they don’t like or are ideologically opposed to. They want to be better, faster, smarter, and more effective, and if you have something to teach them, they want to learn it—even if they don’t agree with you. (Toxic groups are only willing to learn from their leader, other group members, or from instructors and sources “approved” by the group leader.)
• Humility. A solid group doesn’t see themselves as somehow “better” than others individually or as a group. They understand that they’re simply one spoke in the wheel, and look to fulfill their role while staying cognizant of their place in the bigger picture. (A toxic group thinks they are the best/most effective/most important part of the bigger picture and see other groups as minor players.)
• Cooperation. Solid groups want to work with others to achieve more.(Toxic groups don’t cooperate with other groups, they either refuse to cooperate completely, or only “allow” other groups to work with them.)
• Independent Thinking. Their members are leaders in their own right; they think and act independently. You might see them involved in activities run by other groups, or serving as volunteers at actions while representing themselves instead of their core group. Group members may even have side projects of their own that they run completely independent and unaffiliated with their core group. (Toxic groups encourage an all-for-one, one-for-all attitude that values groupthink and group activities over individual involvement.)
• Respect. A solid group (and its leader) treats all members—and outsiders in the movement—with respect and integrity. (A toxic leadership respects only obedient followers, and may lie to members or pit
them against each other in tests of loyalty.)
• Focus and Self-Awareness. Solid groups know who they are, what they’re about, and have actionable goals for the direction of their group that directly relate to the movement and furthering the cause. They are open to criticism and capable of absorbing directional changes if they benefit the movement. (Toxic groups focus on promoting themselves and their own agenda. The cause itself is secondary.)
There are plenty more positive attributes of a good group, but these should get you started. Whatever group you choose—if you choose one at all—keep a teachable attitude, and look to contribute in a positive manner to the cause of liberty.

ReadyNutrition Readers, we’re about to start the New Year off right, even though it seems the year is starting off on the wrong foot. The problem is, it wasn’t on the “right” foot last year, and the problems are becoming both more pronounced and exacerbated. We closed the year on a good note here in the articles, and we’re going to open on a good note: think positive. Even with all of these things happening, you’re still here and still dedicated to what brought you to this site. Continue to plan, prepare, and interact. An old Roman proverb: “Survive, and you succeed,” is a good phrase to keep in mind.
As of this writing, the standoff in Oregon seems to be growing, with the three sons of rancher Cliven Bundy and almost 200 supporters (many among them militiamen from other states) taking a stand on Federal property. The Bundy sons and their allies have commandeered the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. They are attempting to set up a control point that they intend to occupy “for years” if necessary. Ammon Bundy posted a phrase on his Facebook page, as follows:
“ALL PATRIOTS IT’S TIME TO STAND UP FOR OUR RIGHTS AND NOT STAND DOWN!!! WE NEED YOUR HELP!!! COME PREPARED.”
He has implored people to help him, saying that the time is right. Readers, his efforts are to be lauded, as well as those supporting him. Let’s just present a few thoughts in this article, and hopefully he and his brothers will read them and keep them in mind.
- Remember incidents such as the Unabomber, and Eric Rudolf. The original agents on each case retired, but fresh agents were ready to take their turn in the game. Once the government wheels have been set in motion, it is usually they who will wait you out.
- The objective needs to win over the public and keep the issue public. Waco, TX proved that if the government can keep the media and public opinion against those in the standoff, eventually it can create an “eclipse” of information, swoop in, and do its dirty work with the details hidden for years until its convenient to leak them out.
- The Mainstream Media (MSM) enables the government to keep information controlled, canned, and state-approved; the media are complicit in the government’s actions.
- Remember that California Cop (LAPD) and former soldier, Christopher Dorner? He went on a killing spree…and they took him out with a drone.
- Remember that Muslim cleric in Yemen, an American citizen, Anwar al-Awlaki? He was trying to form terrorist groups…and they took him out with a drone.
- These last two items the Bundy brothers and their supporters need to keep in mind: They are all in one place, occupying one building, and this only needs one drone.
The heinous thing pertaining to this event is that it will certainly be used as “justification for the new set of EO’s (Executive Orders) that Obama intends to roll out on us beginning possibly as early as tomorrow, 1/4/15 after his meeting with Attorney General Loretta Lynch. Readers, JJ is not stating the cause of the Bundy brothers and their allies is either unjustified or unworthy; rather that they need to rethink the playbook from a more strategic perspective.
The funnel to place firearms owners and those who uphold the 2nd Amendment in categories of “extremists” or “fringe radicals” will not stop. Certainly (as already mentioned) this episode will be used as propaganda to that end; that funneling by the government to solidify its attempt to take the guns will only continue to grow. Knowing that, the protestors do not need to mass in one target-grouping that either a drone or a bomb can extinguish in a second.
As survivor-oriented preparation-minded citizens, it is your job to figure all of the odds before the game begins. Please read and reread Sun Tzu’s “Art of War” on how to carry out all of your missions, because the book does not pertain only to combat. Sun Tzu wrote, “The zenith of skill as a general is to win a battle without fighting.”
If you’re going to fight, then fight to win, and fight smart…especially when engaged with numerically and logistically superior forces. Win the public support and you throw a damper in their plans. Bypass the MSM with continuous broadcasts, twitters, tweets, and what have you to keep the government and the MSM from stifling the true story or twisting it.
We all face a big challenge this year: staying focused on the business of preparing at hand, while the forces around us move at an incrementally slow speed. It takes those two things that I mentioned last year: resolve and patience. Regarding these things mentioned here, have the resolve to stand up and face the challenges, on a daily basis…for the “long haul” and the patience to choose your own ground of battle, your own arena of struggle.
May this New Year bring you success in all you do as individuals and with your families. Keep up the good fight, and remember to not just fight hard…but fight smart! We love hearing from you. May God bless you and your families. JJ out!

GOLDMAN SACHS: THE THIRD WAVE OF THE FINANCIAL CRISIS IS UPON US
These days it seems like there is a never-ending stream of dire predictions for the United States and the global economy. Many of them have merit of course, since the fundamentals of our economy are being held together by little more than duct tape and string. However, any prediction that suggests that the system is going to come crashing down at a moments notice, is hard take seriously. It’s certainly a possibility, but it’s not the most plausible end to our way of life.
In reality, our society enduring a long-term collapse that may take decades to fully develop. There will be moments of rapid decline, much like the financial collapse of 2008, but overall we seem to be falling on a long trajectory.
Goldman Sachs admitted as much this week when their top analysts claimed that the third wave of the financial collapse of 2008, is rapidly approaching. Aside from how weird it is to hear a major financial institution admit that the crash of 2008 never ended, a fact that Austrian economists, conservatives, and libertarians have been saying for years, they also admitted that debt will be at the root of the approaching crisis.
This wave is characterised by rock-bottom commodities prices, stalling growth in China and other emerging-markets economies, and low global inflation, Goldman Sachs analysts led by Peter Oppenheimer said in a big-picture note.
This triple whammy has its roots in the response to the first two waves of crisis — the banking collapse and European sovereign-debt crisis — and it is all part of the so-called debt supercycle of the past few decades.
Central banks all rushed to lower interest rates in response to the first two debt-fueled crises, encouraging investors to lend in emerging markets such as China for a decent return.
Now that interest rates are looking as if they might go up, lenders are heading for the exits and investors are pulling out of commodities, which are closely linked to the fate of the emerging economies.
And Goldman Sachs isn’t the only establishment institution to suggest that something big is on the way. Even Bloomberg thinks that we’re about take a plunge into another recession.
Bloomberg’s new survey of economists’ recession expectations picked up for the first time in 14 months on Friday. Economists were asked the likelihood of a recession in the next 12 months, and the median came in at 15%, the highest since October 2013.
“We tend to have recessions every seven years, more or less in the United States, since World War II,” David Rubenstein, CEO of The Carlyle Group, told Bloomberg TV. “So at some point in the next year or two or three, you can expect a recession.”
But as Goldman Sachs admitted, the financial crisis of 2008 never ended, so we’re not really entering another recession. We’re merely passing an additional stage of a single crisis, because nothing we’ve done for the past 7 years has solved our problems. We’ve shuffled money around to different corners of the global economy, we’ve buried ourselves in more debt to keep our economy afloat, and we’ve bailed out the companies that helped caused the problem in the first place (including Goldman Sachs).
We don’t have what you would call a ‘healthy economy,’ which would be able to hold itself together when faced with the natural ebbs and flows of the marketplace. We have a ramshackle economy that is running on nothing but fumes and prayers. And soon we’ll find out how much life is left in this crumbling system, when the next wave of the financial collapse arrives.

If you have read the news the last day or so you may have seen headlines such as
Armed group takes over Wildlife Refuge Per CNN Armed anti-government protesters have taken over a building in a federal wildlife refuge in Oregon, accusing officials of unfairly punishing ranchers who refused to sell their land.
A Militia has taken over a Federal Building in Oregon Huff Post says A protest in support of Oregon ranchers facing jail time for arson was followed by an occupation of a building at a national wildlife refuge led by members of a family previously involved in a showdown with the federal government.
Armed Protesters occupy national wildlife refuge building vow long stay per FOX News Armed protesters, including three sons of a Nevada rancher who battled with the government in 2014, vowed to occupy a federal building in Oregon for “as long as it takes,” as state and federal officials on Sunday sought to defuse the situation.
What the news ISN’T telling you is what led up to these protests. Why they are standing their ground, in an EMPTY building.
The purpose of this post, because I don’t like to get political here is two fold. One, I want you to know why they are protesting. Two, I want you to think for yourselves and not be spoon fed by the media.
I wasn’t even totally aware this was going on until somebody posted on Facebook asking why Facebook wasn’t having the story in their trending timeline.
Um, because it isn’t about the Kardashians or some other celebrity. People, PLEASE don’t use Facebook as your news source. They show you want they want you to see, hence why they weren’t sharing this story.
I then shared an article with the back story of why these people are protesting.
I was told that black people have plenty of reasons to protest, but violence isn’t allowed for them.
Can I say these protesters weren’t being violent. They weren’t tipping over cars or starting fires. They weren’t looting.
My next point of this post.
Why is nobody concerned about the government takeover of the ranch?
Why is nobody asking why these men are required to finish out their sentence after being released?
Why aren’t people outraged that the cattle are losing their space?
Then I had this thought. When beef prices skyrocket because the ranchers are all gone and all you have to choose from are FDA run stock yards or feedlots. (read here and here about how ranchers have struggled. The same people complaining about this standoff are the same people who think GMO’s are okay.
My final thought, for now, comes to this. Please don’t just take the mainstream media news at face value. Don’t read or watch one source. Read or watch many. Don’t use Facebook as a source at all. This may be where my tin foil hat comes in, but Facebook isn’t thinking in your best interest. The reason this story isn’t trending is because they don’t want you to care about it. Obama has always warned about this kind of event. Now he has it.
Now we wait for what happens next.
People are all fine and dandy about guns being taken because that doesn’t affect you. You don’t care and in fact would rather it be that way.
This will be the first of many rights removed.
We may be understandably disappointed in, and even angry with, our government officials, but we are still supposed to pray for them.
“First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” – 1 Timothy 2: 1-4 (ESV)
Prayer For Our Government Officials
Save, O Lord, and have mercy upon all leaders, politicians, and civil authorities of these United States of America. I especially hold up to you President Barack Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden, Chief Justice John Roberts, House Speaker Paul Ryan, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. I also pray for all the President’s Cabinet members and advisers, the associate judges of the Supreme Court, all federal, state, and local judges, all members of the House of Representatives and Senate, as well as all governors, state legislators, and local authorities. Grant them wisdom in their duties and decisions, and have them serve Your Will in all things. Block all of their plots and schemes that run counter to Your good and perfect Will, or that threaten the inalienable rights You have given to us. Let them know your love and saving grace.
Father, bless and have mercy on all law enforcement officers at all levels throughout these United States of America. Save them, protect them, and keep them safe. Guide them in their duties, and grant them courage and wisdom. Watch over and protect their families. Comfort those who have lost friends and loved ones in the line of duty. Let them know your love and saving grace. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen.
(Additionally, please feel free to pray by name for any elected officials or law enforcement officers at any level, especially those with jurisdiction over your locality.)
The present US regime has developed a habit over the last six years or so of snubbing the US Constitution, and making up the rules as they go along. The founding fathers called this tyranny.
The present regime cannot continue its tyranny without disarming the citizenry, and this is why Mr. Obama via Executive Order wishes to enact some form of gun control this week.
There have been warnings for some time that the Federal Government is out of control and is not observing the US Constitution.
for background information on the tyranny of which I speak.
A group consisting of armed militia members are occupying a federally owned Department of Wildife Building, in Oregon
Apparently, anyone who does not wish to sell their land to the Federal government when they ask is deemed a terrorist, although the entire matter is much more complex.
Here are articles explaining this highly complex case with both the militia side and the federal government side:
This was inevitable. A militia group bound by the Laws of the Constitution consisting of a number of former Marines who swore to defend the US Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic is in direct opposition to the Obama Regime.
Please pray for the safety of these patriots and their families. Please read all about this situation. Please decide where you are on this matter. I believe that I would have been in agreement with the local judge who sentences the two ranchers to three months imprisonment. I do not support the federal overstep in which the federal government felt that the sentence was insufficient and ordered five years. All over the United States and the world, this regime is making oversteps. They cannot slaughter these men without backlash if the entire world is watching.
Remember that (broadly paraphrased) all that is necessary for evil to succeed in the world is if the good people say and do nothing.
Please watch this situation closely.
According to Statistic Brain, the top 10 New Year’s Resolutions for 2015 were: (1) lose weight, (2) get organized, (3) spend less and save more, (4) enjoy life to the fullest, (5) stay fit and healthy, (6) learn something exciting, (7) quit smoking, (8) help others in their dreams, (9) fall in love, and (10) spend more time with family.
Sadly, “pray,” “develop a closer relationship with God” and “read my Bible more” did not make the top 10 list last year.
We need to renew our minds and focus on the spiritual aspects of our lives. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing and perfect will” (Rom 12:2).
So, how can we make the renewing start to happen? We can start by changing the content of our New Year’s Resolutions to encourage transformation.
Here is a list of 10 spiritual resolutions that will change your life:
1. Pray every day to hear God’s will for my life and be obedient to it. “What other nation is so great as to have their gods near them the way the Lord our God is near us whenever we pray to him?” (Deut 4:7)
2. Read the Bible every day to understand God’s character and his ways. “For the Word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Heb 4:12).
3. Encourage others to start or continue their journey of faith. “Finally brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration, encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you” (2 Cor 13:11).
4. Invite at least one person from my family or community to my church each week. “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘today”, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” (Heb 3:13).
5. Join a local year round Bible study. “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Ps 119:11).
6. Commit to a community outreach for one season. “He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing” (Deut 10:18).
7. Volunteer at my church to teach Sunday School or provide nursery care. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as ransom for many” (Mark 10:45).
8. Open my home to times of fellowship and discipleship. “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing so some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (Heb 13:2)
9. Commit to identifying the needs vs. wants in my budget and increasing my charitable giving. “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow? They do not labor or spin” (Matt 6:28).
10. Keep a journal to daily or weekly document the progress of my resolutions. “This observance will be for you like a sign on your hand and a reminder on your forehead that this law of the Lord is to be on your lips” (Ex 13:9a).
These spiritual resolutions will only be transforming if you make them a lifetime commitment.
My friends, I encourage you, no matter whether you make or do not make any resolutions for the coming year, think about areas of your life in which renewing needs to take place. Is it in your marriage? Is it in your bank account? Is it in your attitude? Or is it in your thoughts which no one hears? Wherever it is, know that God will help you and there is no need for you to struggle. He will be beside you, walking with you, and carrying you if need be.
“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring Word of God” (1 Peter 1:23).

Let’s begin today’s piece with the funniest statistic I’ve ever seen: 1.1 million Americans don’t have a toilet…
You can safely bet that I was thinking just what you were after reading this article: it’s our God given right as free Americans living on the land to own a toilet, even if it’s just an outhouse!
Yes, I am aware of the fact that going to an outhouse to take care of business during the cold winter months, especially if you live in, let’s say…Alaska, doesn’t sound very appealing, but something is still much better than nothing, right?
A DIY outhouse is a cool project for any homesteader, especially with the winter coming. I mean, if you have 2-3-4 months with nothing much else to do than watching the start of World War 3 on TV, you better put your mind and (later on, in the spring) hands to work. After all, idle hands (and minds) are the devil’s playground.
With that in mind, today’s article will provide you with some food for thought, i.e. some ideas and plans for building your own outhouse, because every man deserves a throne, right?
The Principles You Need to Know
The general idea is that when nature calls, you must be prepared; everything revolves around this concept – preparedness.
Also, sanitation is very important. We’re not animals, and learning the principles of DIY-ing an outhouse will make sure that you won’t have to squat like a dog over a dirty hole dug in the mud in the rain when SHTF (literally speaking).
So, here are the four DIY outhouse basic principles, as I am an expert in building latrines, ‘cause I was raised in Arkansas where outhouses are still in use even today. Tere we go.
1. The most important thing when building an outhouse is the legal foundation. In our day and age, everything must be regulated with laws made by the good people in the federal government or at local level, because we’re too dumb to know what is good for us. Basically, you should check with your local authorities (environmental officials or state health officials) to see if there are any laws and regulations to be followed unless you like to pay hefty fines or get arrested for breaking environmental laws, like warming the climate.
There are also local zoning and building codes and permits to take care of. I am very serious; some states and counties will require an impermeable concrete-made tank to be installed in your outhouse, to prevent the pollution of the countryside or water. That will make for building an outhouse a pretty expensive project, especially if you must transport the concrete-made tank to your desired location.
If you live in remote areas, not so densely populated and inhabited by sane folks, there may be no laws regarding this issue, but it would be wise to check it out before starting your DIY outhouse project. For example, in the state of Utah, outhouses or latrines are totally banned!
2. The next best thing is to do proper recon when choosing the best spot for your outhouse. Take a good look around your property and find a high ground for installing the latrine in such way that it sits as far as possible above the water table.
The best soil for building an outhouse is a well-drained sandy soil. If you build an outhouse on top of heavy clay soil, the human waste and liquids will not be able to seep efficiently into the ground. Also, the latrine must be located properly; not too close from your residence (the smell can be nasty and the well water can be compromised) but not too far either (think about a cold winter night, it’s 4 a.m. and 20 degrees F below zero, and you have a bad case of the runs hitting your guts). The location should also take into account easy access for septic service pump trucks, which regularly have only ~150-200 feet of hose.
3. Build a long-lasting, bomb-proof outhouse. By that, I mean you must build your manly throne house to last for generations so that your family, your children and your children’s children will be able to enjoy and benefit from the outhouse experience. To accomplish that, you must use 2 by fours for the above ground structure, about sixteen inches on center. The materials used in the outhouse must be of high quality, like the ones you’d require for building a garage or your house: weather-proof siding, thirty-year shingles, specially treated lumber, waste-splash impervious materials below the “seat” level (for when SHTF), stuff like that.
The outhouse must endure the worst, so the pit liner must be made from materials that don’t rot (such as chemically treated timber or concrete). Another idea would be to use a plastic or concrete (watertight) holding tank, which can be easily and perpetually filled/pumped, time and time again, without getting damaged.
To prevent foul smells and odor contamination, you must design the holding tank or the pit with proper ventilation and seal all the wood parts like a real pro! In most cases, the vent stack consists of a four-inch PVC pipe which runs all the way from the roof to the seat board.
4. Make your outhouse look cool, classy and attractive, like a palace of some sort. I mean, not everybody is as gun-ho about latrines as this writer is, so keep in mind that your visitors, hell, even your kids must go to the outhouse with smiles on their faces. Make your latrine look appealing, alluring, and as inviting as possible. Put windows in it to let the light in! Try to build it in a place with a nice view over your real estate, especially if you’re living in a beautiful countryside.
Obviously, for privacy reasons, you should put up curtains to screen the latrine’s inhabitants from the view of others, but you got the general idea. Make your latrine a place in which spending time is nice and inspiring. Think ergonomic, size it with comfort in mind, for both small and huge users, with enough elbow room and what not.
Also think about people with disabilities and about ways to keep it clean without tremendous effort. Make enough room for storing large quantities of toilet paper and sanitation products, along with “reading” materials. If you want to go the extra mile, add power to your outhouse by installing a solar panel on the roof which can be used for powering a light bulb or even a small heating device for those chilly winter nights.
With the basics taken care of, let us concentrate upon the DIY part, shall we? A century old booklet claims that building an outhouse is an easy job, easily done by a fourteen year old boy of mediocre intelligence. However, back in the day, people used to DIY a lot, while nowadays we all take things for granted. In the worst case scenario, a plumber or a carpenter is a phone call away.
To begin with, the easiest way to build an outhouse is to first dig a big enough hole in the proper location, and afterwards to build the actual structure on top of it. That will require a good plan, time, skill, elbow grease and dedication, plus some money, depending on the complexity of the project. The cheapest way is to use recycled materials for the structure, such as iron shed for the roof and barn wood for the walls. To elevate the front area, you can use mud/dirt for the supra-structure and flat rocks for making steps.
The size of the “hole” must take into account the traffic, i.e. how many people will use the outhouse. You can use a composting toilet, instead of choosing to pump and dump your tank. This procedure is called DIYing a composting bucket toilet, and here’s a video tutorial exposing its “dirty secrets”.

Now, here’s another tutorial which depicts the “journey” of building an outhouse at your off-grid cabin, starting from scratch, with the sky being the limit (it all depends on your imagination and budget).

Today is the 5th installment of 26 in our year-long series called “The Simple House Project.” Every 2 weeks, we publish an article covering the process from start to finish. We hope to document the challenges, trials and tribulations of creating a simple house that is extremely cost-effective, energy-efficient and earth-friendly – using only the space we truly need to live comfortably. You can see the entire collection of stories here : Simple House Project Creating A Timeline… One of the best ways to complete any large project is to create a building timeline showing what needs to be done – and by when. In fact, it’s really the only way to keep everything on schedule, moving forward, and perhaps most importantly – on budget! Since we are responsible for coordinating the entire process of the “Simple House Project” – having an accurate timeline is critical. It will help us keep the flow of the process on track – letting us know when we need to have everything from the foundation poured to the kitchen cabinets installed. Our timeline is unique in that in addition to coordinating the various hired trades for the project – we will also be responsible for completing most of the interior. In addition to drywall, installing floors, hanging […]
Did you make a list of resolutions or goals for the year?
What does your list look like?
How do you stay on track for your goals?
In 2016, I’ll be doing a lot more blogging and even more writing. You can expect several new books from me this year, including one on life in Taiwan called Ni Hao, Taiwan. I’ll also have a few new minimalism books out later in the year, as well. Release dates will be posted later – I’m currently working on a few other projects, but there will be books! Make sure you join my email list for the earliest updates!
I’ve also been doing a lot of thinking on what I hope to accomplish with The Nerdy Survivalist. This blog was started a few years ago as a way to connect with other survivalists and like-minded people who love to prep and who love to live simply. This year, I’d like to grow and expand while continuing to help others on their journeys to simple living. I’ll continue to have prepper posts, but I’ll also have more of a focus on simple and minimalist living.
Happy New Year!
