Cancer — Lies of the Nuclear Cartel

Click here to view the original post.

stock here: in 1900 about 6% of us got cancer.   Appreciate your comments, please add some.
Now women get 50% cancer, men are 66%.   After Fukushima, WIPP, Beatty, and all the others, we are sure to see much more cancers, it’s big business.

And rather than blame the cancers on environmental pollution, including radiation, they try to blame it on “bad luck” or as this article states….Its your genes.

The overall findings are not a big surprise. They support earlier findings that show about a third of all cancer cases can be blamed on faulty genes. Most of the rest are due to so-called lifestyle factors such as smoking, diet and exercise.

Note that radiation is never once mentioned.

And this study is confined to Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden

Starting in 1943, conveniently 2 years before the first atomic bomb.

These countries also were hard hit by Chernobyl, some with Reindeer still massively radioactive.

“They have been studied for an average of 32 years”    In other words MOST of those studied were born after the 1963 ban on atmospheric nuclear testing.

What caused these bad genes, that was not present in 1900?

They blame it on diet… GMO labeling is “outlawed”

BHO’s Useless Gun Control Executive Orders

Click here to view the original post.

The futility of BHO’s executive orders under the guise of stopping violence is clear even in by the BATF’s own words.

From their final ruling for 41P, which changes the process for transferring firearms covered by the National Firearms Act (NFA), page 42:

The Department notes that some individuals who own NFA firearms do in fact commit crimes. A review of trace data and criminal records from 2006 to 2014 disclosed twelve incidents in which owners of NFA firearms were convicted of crimes; however, there is no evidence that these crimes were committed with NF A firearms.

Emphasis is mine. It then goes on to list the crimes committed, and none of them are even actual murder, mass murder or terrorism:

Convictions include attempted homicide, conspiracy to commit felony offenses of firearms laws, operating a drug involved premises, possession of unlawful firearms, possession of marijuana, intent to distribute methamphetamine, possession of a firearm during commission of drug trafficking, domestic violence, theft, dealing firearms without a license, and possession of an unregistered NF A firearm.

There are hundreds of thousands of people who have NFA firearms; of these hundreds of thousands of people, the ATF could only identify 12 incidents where NFA owners were convicted of crimes, with no evidence that the crimes had actually been committed using the NFA firearms.

Again, per the ATF itself, from 2006 to 2014, not a single NFA firearm owner has actually killed someone.

So, explain to me how adding more requirements to the NFA process for trusts is helping “reduce gun violence”?

It’s not.

In fact, the crime rate suggests you’d likely have a hard time finding a more law abiding, less violent group of people in this country.

It’s ridiculous, just like the claims you can buy guns off the internet without a background check or the so-called gun show loophole.

But of course, you and I know that none of this BS is really about solving the violence problem. It’s about political gestures, ringing of hands and putting more control in the government’s hands.

Most of the noise I’m hearing is coming from the issuance of 41P, which impacts the hurdles that need to be jumped through for transferring NFA items (suppressors, short barreled rifles, etc.) into a trust or other legal entity.
If you want to read the full 248 pages, the ATF has made it available here.
Key bullets at this point:
  • Trustees now have to submit fingerprints and passport photos when submitting for a form for an NFA item (beneficiaries are exempt unless they meet the definition of responsible person)
  • The CLEOs are now to be notified when a NFA form is submitted (no CLEO sign off required for individuals)
Given that it’s a 248 page document written in government speak, so the gun community is still digesting the final rule and nuances.
Overall, it’s a bit of a compromise (removing CLEO sign off = good, adding requirements for trusts = bad); not horribly onerous, but more hoops to jump through when using a trust. It removes some of the reasons for using a trust for NFA transfers, though the estate planning benefits still remain.
The rule has 180 days before it takes effect.

A Message to the Members of the US Military

When you need a hard disk failure … on purpose

This article ( The Right Way To Destroy An Old Hard Drive) got me thinking……

I’m a huge fan of privacy. And any sod that tells me that I don’t need crypto because ‘if you’re not doing anything wrong, then you have nothing to hide’ is a short-sighted statist who will be one of the first ones up against the wall when the revolution gets here.

Will snoop-proof cryptography and secure phones/computers make law enforcement and governments job more difficult? Absolutely. Is that a good enough reason to prevent it’s availability? Absolutely not. Yes, terrorists, murderers, kid diddlers, and all sorts of scum are going to use it. The fact that bad guys use it is not reason enough to keep me from using it.

By and large, I’m a pretty law-abiding the Heinlein way (“I will accept the rules that you feel necessary to your freedom. I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.“) But that doesn’t mean I feel anyone…spouses, government, church, my mom….should be able to just go spelunking through my hard drive when they have an itch.

Government is a shoddy creature when it comes to respecting your privacy, but it’s an Einstein-level genius when it comes to violating it. And thats why when you decide it’s time to upgrade your computer, it takes more than a simple wipe to make sure your German dungeon porn, Picard/Riker slash fiction, Katy Perry bootlegs, and .jpgs of that really, really, ill-advised waitress from Buffalo Wild Wings don’t wind up on someone elses computer.

Lots of people say that all you have to do is degausee your drive. Look, I’m not the trusting type. If I degause a drive how do I know it really worked? I’m not cracking my computer open, putting the degaussed drive back in , and then trying to read it. No..the best way is utter destruction. And, fortunately, for guys like you and me, there’s a very convenient method that is just a range trip away.

Seems like a good idea. But, really, you need to sink more than just a few rounds into each one of these.

But you have to remember – you would think that punching a couple holes in a drives platter would be enough. I would too. But I am virtually positive that someone, somewhere, has the technology to ‘skip around’ those damaged parts of the disk and get information. Sure, not all of it, but perhaps enough to be a problem. So…a couple holes ain’t gonna do the trick.

One or two hits won’t do it. You need to see daylight…a lot of it…through this thing.

Don’t spare the FMJ. What you want is enough metal-shredding terminal ballistics to remove great gouts of material.

Much better!

I usually take the drive to the range, stand a few yards back from it, and hammer it with half a mag of .223 or .308 until it looks like some sort of shredded-metal sculpture. Then I twist and break it into a couple different pieces and toss ’em in the dumpster.

I saw on the news that the FBI is looking for the hard drive the San Bernadino shooters used. The feds had sent divers into a pond looking for the drive, which means that they fully expect to be able to recover data from a waterlogged drive…which is reasonable, since water won’t really affect magnetic disks. But you just know those guys have all sortsa technology for recovering data from disks people ‘thought theyd erased’.

I mention this not because you or I are engaged in criminal activities that we need to hide, (Well, I’m not..I dont know what youve been up to), but rather because it’s too easy to take the simple way out, whack the ol’ Western Digital with a hammer a few times, call it good, and toss a drive into the trash that could potentially come back and bite you in the butt.

So…if you got a new computer for Christmas, and youre tossing out that old drive to make new for the new shiny one, do the smart thing and head to the range with it.

Log Splitters 101: What You Should Know Before Shopping

Click here to view the original post.

Temperatures are cold, and your stack of already-prepared logs is getting smaller and smaller. You find yourself dreading heading out to split more logs. Perhaps this year is the time to make that purchase — you know, that log splitter you’ve been dreaming about with every downswing of your splitting maul. Manually splitting logs burns about 440 calories an hour and, for some, causes back pain. Not light work. Before you go out and buy the first log splitter you set eyes on, let’s look at a few important elements of log splitters first.

First of all, there are three basic types of log splitters (although there are variations in each): manual, electric and gas-powered. Manual log splitters can provide more power for less up-front cost, although they can be slow and cumbersome to work with. They save your shoulders, but take about the same amount of time to split logs as it does to use a splitting maul. With a splitting maul, you can estimate to split 20 to 30 logs an hour. With a manual log splitter, you generally can split between 18 and 24 logs an hour.

Electric log splitters have several things going for them. First, depending on the type, they increase your log-splitting output to about 40 to 50 logs per hour. Since they don’t generate gas fumes and are quieter, they can work nicely indoors (in a barn or on a porch, for example). A quieter system can be an excellent choice if you have noise-sensitive neighbors.

New Rugged Portable Power Unit Will Jump Start Your Car, Power Virtually Anything — And Even Air Up Your Tires!

Along with being quieter, electric log splitters tend to be lighter in weight, which translates to greater portability. However, there are a few drawbacks. Electric log splitters are less powerful. They usually only go up to about 10 tons, although there are models that can do more. One other potential drawback is that they require electric power, and so splitting logs in a remote location

They usually only go up to about 10 tons, although there are models that can do more. One other potential drawback is that they require electric power, and so splitting logs in a remote location is not possible unless you also have access to a generator.

Now let’s take a quick look at gas-powered log splitters. Gas-powered splitters pack a punch of power, going anywhere from eight tons up to 24 tons and beyond. They also come in a variety of kinds — hydraulic models, horizontal-vertical models, and fast kinetic models. Gas-powered log splitters increase your log output, as well. For example, a quality hydraulic model can split between 60 and 80 logs an hour, while a quality kinetic model will do much more. These are the splitters that you will need for the larger logs (anything beyond a 12-inch diameter by 20 inches in length). But more powerful doesn’t always mean better; gas splitters come with a few negatives. They’re louder, more expensive and heavier. You wouldn’t want to run a gas splitter indoors or near animals (for safety reasons), and just like other gas engines, gas-powered log splitters require maintenance, including oil changes, air filter changes, spark plug replacements, and fuel refills regularly. However, for processing the kind of large logs most home owners find themselves dealing with, the gas-powered splitter is probably the best choice.

The Most Versatile Backup Stove In The World Allows You To Cook Anything, Any Time, Any Where

But more powerful doesn’t always mean better; gas splitters come with a few negatives. They’re louder, more expensive and heavier. So, evaluate your needs. If you are cutting logs that you just hauled out of the woods, then you’ll probably want to consider a gas-powered splitter. If, however, you have smaller logs or are looking to cut logs down for kindling, then an electric splitter may be perfect for you. Some people have found it helpful to have one of each kind of splitter, the gas-powered for the main log splitting in the fall, and the electric splitter for cutting down smaller logs and kindling at the house.

To sum everything up, there really isn’t one best type of log splitter. Each kind can be quite useful depending on where and how you want to use it. But most will admit that, apart from the calorie burning perk, any type of log splitter is better than the old splitting maul.

The Survival Dental Kit

Click here to view the original post.

Over the years, we have written hundreds of articles on medical preparedness for short or long-term disasters. Many now include medical kits and supplies to add to survival food storage and items for personal protection. Yet, few who are otherwise medically prepared seem to devote much time to dental health. Poor dental health can cause issues that affect the work efficiency of members of your group in survival settings. When your people are not at 100% effectiveness, your chances for survival decrease.

History tells us that problems with teeth take up a significant portion of the medic’s patient load. In the Vietnam War, medical personnel noted that fully half of those who reported to daily sick call came with dental complaints. In a long-term survival situation, you certainly will find yourself as dentist as well as nurse or doctor.

Anyone who has had to perform a task while simultaneously dealing with a bad toothache can attest to the effect on the amount and quality of work done. If your teeth hurt badly, it’s unlikely that your mind can concentrate on anything other than the pain. Therefore, it only makes sense that you must learn basic dental hygiene, care, and procedures to keep your people at full work efficiency. It could easily be the difference between success and failure in a collapse.

The prepared medic will have included dental supplies in their storage, but what exactly would make sense in austere settings? You would want the kit to be portable, so dentist chairs and other heavy equipment wouldn’t be practical. You would want it to be easily distinguished from the medical kit.

different masks

We’ve mentioned that gloves for medical and dental purposes are one item that you should have in quantity. Don’t ever stick your bare hands in someone’s mouth. Buy hypoallergenic nitrile gloves instead of latex. For additional protection, masks should also be stored and worn by the medic.

We’ve researched dental items that should be in the dental kit of those that would be medically responsible in a long-term survival community. After consulting with a number of preparedness-minded dentists, we have put together what we believe will be a reasonable kit that can handle a number of dental issues. Items that would be practical for  the survival “dentist” include:

• Dental floss, dental picks, toothbrushes, toothpaste or baking soda.

• Dental or orthodontic wax as used for braces. Wax can be used to splint a loose tooth to its neighbors.

• A Rubber bite block to keep the mouth open. This provides good visualization and protection from getting bitten. A large eraser would serve the purpose.

• Cotton pellets, Cotton rolls, Q tips, gauze sponges (cut into small squares).

• Compressed air cans or a bulb syringe for drying up saliva on teeth.

• Commercial temporary filling material, such as Tempanol, Cavit, or Den-temp.

• Oil of cloves (eugenol), a natural anesthetic. Often found in commercial preparations such as:

-Red Cross Toothache Medicine (85% eugenol)
-Dent’s Toothache Drops (benzocaine in combo with eugenol)

It’s important to know that eugenol might burn the tongue, so be careful when touching anything but teeth with it.

• other oral analgesics like Hurricaine or Orajel (Benzocaine)

• Zinc oxide powder; when mixed with 2 drops of clove oil, it will harden into temporary filling cement.

Here’s a video of the procedure:

• Spatula for mixing (a tongue depressor will do)

• Oil of oregano, a natural antibacterial.

• A bulb syringe to blow air and dry teeth for better visualization, and as a diagnostic tool to elicit discomfort in damaged teeth. A can of compressed air may be an alternative.

• An irrigation syringe to flush areas upon which work is being done

• Scalpel #15 or #10 to incise and drain abscesses

• Dental probes, also called “explorers”.

• Dental tweezers

• Dental mirrors

• Dental scrapers/scalers to remove plaque and probe questionable areas.

• Spoon excavators. These instruments have a flat circular tip that is used to “excavate” decayed material from demineralized areas of a tooth. A powered dental drill would be a much better choice, but not likely to be an option off the grid.

• Elevators. These are thin but solid chisel-like instruments that help with extractions by separating ligaments that hold teeth in their sockets. #301 or #12B are good choices. In a pinch, some parts of a Swiss army knife might work.

• Extraction forceps. These are like pliers with curved ends. They come in versions specific to upper and lower teeth and, sometimes, left and right.

Although there are more types of dental extractors than there are teeth, you should at least have several. Although every dentist has their preferences, you should consider including the following in your dental kit:

-#151 or #79N for lower front teeth
-#150A or #150 for upper front teeth.
-#23, best for lower molars
-#53R, best for upper right molars
-#53L, best for upper left molars

• Blood-clotting Agents: There are a number of products, such as Act-Cel, that help control bleeding in the mouth after extractions or other procedures. It comes a fabric square that can be cut to size and placed directly on the bleeding socket or gum.

chromic catgut

Chromic Catgut Suture

• Sutures: A kit consisting of a needle holder, forceps, scissors, and suture material is helpful for the control of bleeding or to preserve the normal contour of gum tissue. We recommend 4/0 Chromic catgut as it is absorbable. It’s small enough for the oral cavity but large enough for the non-surgeon to handle. Don’t forget a small scissors to cut the string. More information on suture materials can be found later in this book.

• Pain medication and antibiotics. Medications in the Penicillin family are preferred if not allergic. For those allergic to Penicillin, Erythromycin can be used. For tooth abscesses, Clindamycin is a good choice. These antibiotics are discussed in detail in the section dedicated to them in this book.

Just as obtaining knowledge and training on medical issues likely in a disaster is important, the study of dental procedures and practices is essential for the aspiring survival medic.

Here’s What Happens When You Eat Nothing but MREs

Click here to view the original post.

Have you heard the news? The Army has an offer for those of you who are particularly brave. You no longer have to join the Army if you want to serve your country. You just have to eat their food.

U.S. Army researchers invited men and women to help improve their Meals, Ready-to-Eat — if those volunteers can eat nothing else for three straight weeks.

Participants would eat and drink the provided rations for 21 days, then go back to a normal diet for 10 days, according to the study. It’s open to people between the ages of 18 and 62 who “meet additional screening criteria.”

The goals of the study go beyond improving the taste, the Army Times reported. Researchers say they’re hoping to add other nutrients to the food and to look at its impact on bacteria inside the digestive system, potentially improving what they call “gut health.”

Don’t worry. You’ll be properly compensated for your service.

Volunteers can’t have alcohol to help swallow the food — they’ll need to avoid all outside food and drink for those first three weeks, officials say. The Army will pay volunteers $200 each for completing the study.

All kidding aside, I don’t think you could give me enough money to eat MREs every day for three weeks. Or at least, the Army doesn’t have enough money to compensate the number I have in my head. I’m willing to bet that a lot of you reading this feel the same way. For those of you who haven’t tried MREs before, let me fill you in on what’s going to happen to the poor bastards who volunteer for this study.

It’s probably not a coincidence that the researchers are trying to study the effects these meals have on gut flora. If you read the ingredients list for these meals, you’ll find that they contain a lot of the same garbage you would find in junk food. Lots of chemicals and GMOs, and much much more. If you had a prepared MRE dish in front of you, and you closed your eyes before taking a bite, you’d probably recognize the taste as something remarkably similar to that of fast food, convenience store take out, or TV dinners. Though it’s prepared in a way that allows the food to last much longer, that’s pretty much all it is.

So what do those junk foods do to your gut flora? As some studies have shown, they can absolutely obliterate vast swaths of your stomach’s bacteria within a matter of days. This might help explain why MREs are notorious for causing constipation (which is also caused by their lack of fiber and high calorie content). Other signs of poor gut flora include inflammation, bloating, gas, fatigue, and diarrhea.

So if you ate nothing but MREs for three weeks, it’s safe to say that your body would be kind of a mess. Granted, some people don’t seem to have any problem with digesting MREs, but for most us, three weeks would be devastating. In the past, a lot of veterans have reported severe constipation for the first few days, sometimes followed by the exact opposite for another few days.

However, it is possible for your body to adapt to this stuff. After all, many of our servicemen have had to eat MREs for months at a time when on deployment, so it’s certainly possible, even if it’s not desirable. Given enough time, your bowel movements would probably return to a (somewhat) normal state, and the other side effects would subside. The horrible ingredients in these meals would still be doing damage to your body, but eventually you’d return to functional state.

Once you stop eating them though, you might run into a few more problems. That’s why this study wants to follow their volunteers for a while after they go back to eating normal food. After eating MRE’s for three weeks, your digestive system would have adapted to the food. Going back to real food could be a real shock to the body. Diarrhea, gas, and cramps would probably be felt for at least a few days, until the digestive tract “relearned” how to digest real food.

Overall, I can say without a doubt, that I do not envy the volunteers for this study. While some people seem to be able to handle MRE’s without any severe symptoms, eating them for three weeks would be a wretched experience for most of us. That is after all, one of the reasons why they’re paying people to do it.

On a final note, if you have any MRE horror stories, feel free to share them in the comments.

A Free LDS Recipe Book that Will Help You Learn to Cook from Scratch

Click here to view the original post.

free LDS Recipe BookOne question that seems to come up regularly is how to cook from scratch with only very basic ingredients.  This is a hard one particularly for younger preppers.  Home making classes aren’t taught in school anymore and too many people rely on frozen or other types of prepared meals.  Over the years, I have posted quite a bit of information on the LDS (Mormon) Dry Pack Centers.  They have very reasonable prices and are open to everybody, but the choices are somewhat limited.  So here is a free LDS recipe book from Mormon Share that addresses this subject.

The book Food Storage Recipes  can be downloaded for free.  It covers cooking with the foods that are available from the Dry Pack Centers with only one thing added and that is cooking oil or shortening.  The free LDS recipe book contains a surprising number of recipes, including such things as emergency baby food, information on sourdough starters and sprouting.

On page, one of the book, there is a list of the shelf lives of the foods used in the recipes.  This is an older list and is not totally accurate.  If you look at the order form, put out by the LDS Dry Pack center, it shows the current shelf life information.

You will notice that on the order form there are both packaged and bulk items for sale.  The packaged items are ready to be stored.  The bulk items will need to be correctly package to last the listed shelf life.  Here are two links to posts that show you a couple of ways of packaging your food for long term storage. Sealing Food in Five Gallon Buckets is an Important Skill for Preppers,  How to Seal a #10 Can

Hopefully this free LDS recipe book will help you with your cooking.  Don’t wait until the last minute, start trying these recipes now.  As you do, you will come up with new ideas of your own.  You will find additional foods that you will want to add to your storage to make these recipes more suited for your family.

Think About Security When Home Shopping

Click here to view the original post.

Think About Security When Home ShoppingMy family is actively shopping for a new home. This house has been ok, but it could have been much better. This time we’ll think about security when home shopping.

Think About Security When Home Shopping

When we found our current home, it was winter. The neighborhood was quiet and everything had a nice layer of snow. It was very idyllic and picturesque. We jumped on the house and moved right in! It was everything we wanted…. or so we thought.

winter home

When the weather started to warm up, and the snow began to melt, we discovered that the quaint hills in the neighbors back yard were piles of junk, hidden under snow. Groups of pot smoking teenagers started to hang out in the neighbors driveway and the street, blocking traffic down the road. There was no time day or night were groups of people weren’t hanging out in view of your house. You couldn’t bring anything in or out without being seen. People sped down the road in front of our house at very high speeds. Keep in mind this is residential neighborhood with a cul-de-sac, not a through street.

What can you do to avoid this type of situation?

  • Use Google maps satellite views to check out the neighborhood and area. This will help you spot landfills and prisons in your area, as well as other indicators and landscape features that may not be in your best interests.
  • Check out the neighborhood and area using
  • Check your states Sex Offender Registry (in some areas this information will be on the Crime Reports website also)
  • Do a stakeout in your new neighborhood. Pack lunch and dinner, and sit in your car, watching what goes on near your prospective home. I don’t think you’ll need to resort to binoculars and telephoto lenses on your camera, in most situations. You’ll need to do this for more than 1 day, and from different areas around the neighborhood. Make multiple visits to your prospective home, during different times of day, and in different weather.
    • Be prepared to spend long hours. You’re going to live here, so you want to know what goes on before you commit your money and family to this area.
    • Be there in the morning to see people heading to work and school.
    • Be there in the evening to see people coming home from work.
    • Be there on weekends, to see if there are wild loud parties every night.
    • Watch the neighbors houses the most, try to figure out if they’re the kind of people you want to live beside.
    • Make sure to have some proof that you have an interest in property in that area, because you may look suspicious and may get a visit from the police.

These simple tasks, while an investment in time, will give you a much better inside view of the happenings in your prospective neighborhood, much better than a few short home viewings with a Realtor! Putting yourself on a stakeout of the prospective property, the surrounding neighborhood, and by doing the proper research will ensure that you think about security when home shopping.

The security shouldn’t stop when you’ve ensured that your home is in an area that meets your needs. Once you’ve purchased your home, you’ll want to be sure to check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and install a home security system from a reputable vendor, like SimpliSafe.

The M-1 Garand As A Plan B Rifle

Click here to view the original post.

m1_garand_rifle_-_usa_-_30-06_-_armc3a9museumThe attack on “assault rifles” has begun anew. Regardless of the hoopla in the media, the odds of any significant restrictive legislation being passed at the federal level is slim until the results of the next presidential election at least. However certain local People’s Republics continue to assail the Constitutional rights of American citizens in regards to the types of firearms they can own. Primarily, they are directed against those evil, pistol griped, detachable high-capacity magazine holding, bayonet hanging black plastic THINGS. If you live in one of these occupied areas, move. If you are forced to live in, work in, or navigate through one of these regions, and need a dependable combat rifle, take heart. You have options. I described the Lever Action Rifle for Preppers. These rifles have evaded the restrictions placed on AR and AK platforms in some areas. But I think there is another viable option. The venerable M-1Infantryman_in_1942_with_M1_Garand,_Fort_Knox,_KY Garand. I am only going to discuss the suitability characteristics  of the Garand in regards to restrictive firearms areas, but for a good general history of the rifle as well as some useful links check out the Wikipedia article on it.

So what would be some of the advantages of the Garand in an “assault rifle” hostile jurisdiction? It has no pistol grip, no detachable magazine, the stock is made of wood, and if necessary the bayonet lug could be easily ground off.

GarandpartsThe M-1 is a rugged rifle. It is chambered for the cal.30 cartridge known to civilians as the .30-06. This is an extremely powerful cartridge compared to 5.56mm or 7.62×39. It is capable of long-range engagement of hostile targets out to 600 yards easily with iron sights if you do your stuff, and even longer if you are a seriously accomplished marksman. 1274In 30-06, Federal even makes a 150gr FMJ bullet specifically for the M-1. This load duplicates the ballistics of the M-2 Ball round issued with the M-1. The rifle will typically digest a large range of sporting loads, however you  to test any you plan to use, as individual rifle can be finicky with soft nosed ammo. In hunting loads, it will take down all big game inM-1 owners guide bookpng North America. Many have been rechambered for 7.62mm NATO and you can have a specialty gunsmith do that if you want, but it will add on to the overall cost of the rifle.

The rifle has an excellent adjustable peep sight that can be adjusted for both elevation and windage. There are commercial scope mounts available if you want to mount glass on it and make it your long-range rifle.  It is a bit on the heavy side and will average about 11+ lbs. fully loaded with sling and cleaning kit in the butt stock, depending on the density of the stock. But then again, I have clients with tricked out M-4s that weigh that much. Spare parts are readily available from a number of sources and there are gunsmiths that specialize in accurizing and repairing them. The M-1 Garand has one potential weakness for the M-1 clipsurvivalist/prepper though. It uses an 8rd en bloc clip that the cartridges are fed into the magazine with and which gets ejected when the last cartridge is fired. This means you have only an 8 rd. capacity. That isn’t  really all that bad. But the problem is that without these clips, the rifle is effectively a single loader. Luckily, spare clips are readily available and you should consider stocking up on these for future use. They are cheap, light, easily transported and easily loaded.

The M-1 is a rugged, dependably, battle tested rifle. I have a mint International Harvester manufactured one that is my plan B rifle.

How To Recognize And Treat Food Poisoning

How To Recognize And Treat Food Poisoning

Food poisoning in an everyday situation is bad enough but at least you have access to hospitals if you need medical treatment. In a post SHTF situation, it can be deadly.

Recognizing the symptoms can be crucial too, because a case of food poisoning may present similarly to other, contagious diseases such as the flu or malaria that would cause you to isolate the person or forbid them entry into your home, compound, etc.

The first thing that you should probably know is the different types of food poisoning, because if you know the types, you know how to avoid contracting (or causing) food poisoning. Here we go.

Norovirus is the most common cause of food poisoning; as a matter of fact, it accounts for over half the cases reported annually. Typically, Norovirus is contacted due to poor hygiene and improper food handling. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, chills, headache, low-grade fever, muscle aches and fatigue.

It’s rare for Norovirus to be severe enough to cause death, but it could happen. Also, care must be taken with hygiene because the Norovirus because it IS contagious through contact with bodily fluids.

The only real treatment for it is maintaining hydration while waiting it out. Symptoms should subside within a couple of days or sooner.

Interested in staying healthy long after the SHTF? Click here to find out more!

To avoid contracting it (or spreading it) wash your hands and all cooking areas and prep tools thoroughly. If somebody has it, clean everything that they come into contact with thoroughly or discard it in a hygienic manner. Somebody who’s had Norovirus shouldn’t prepare food for others for at least 2-3 days after symptoms go away.

Norovirus survives extremes in temperature so you have to kill it chemically. Bleach is a good bet. Wash your fruits and veggies thoroughly and cook all shellfish before you eat them. Don’t eat or drink after people and avoid handshaking. If you do, don’t touch your face before you wash your hands.

37948497_s-e1442588135295The next on our list of fabulous things not to get is botulism. Caused by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum, this type of food poisoning is rare but extremely serious. The botulinum toxin is one of the most poisonous biological substances known to man.

It’s a neurotoxin that causes central nervous system impairment. Botulism is most frequently contracted from improperly prepared or damaged canned goods, whether they’re home-canned or store-bought.

Symptoms include drooping eyelids, facial paralysis on one or both sides, muscle weakness, dry mouth, blurry vision, trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing or speaking, nausea, vomiting and paralysis.

In babies, you may see constipation, flopping around, a weak cry, drooling drooping eyelids, paralysis or difficulty sucking.

Treating botulism in a SHTF situation is going to suck because the only treatments are to induce vomiting and bowel movements in order to get the toxin out of the body as quickly as possible. Antibiotics aren’t recommended for foodborne botulism because it actually speeds up the release of the toxin. There is an anti-toxin, but that’s only available at the hospital.

The best way to deal with botulism is to avoid it. Don’t eat canned goods, especially low-acid produce, meats and fish that you even suspect may be bad, or that are stored in a jar or can that’s been damaged or isn’t sealed properly.

E Coli

This is another bad boy in the food poisoning category. Avoid it at all costs because it sucks. It’s caused by exposure to contaminated products including meat (usually hamburger), unpasteurized milk or juice, soft cheeses made from unpasteurized milk, or alfalfa sprouts. It can also be contracted via contaminated water or by coming into contact with contaminated animals.

There are a couple of reasons that e Coli is bad. First, even if you have the lesser strain, symptoms can last 5-10 days. Symptoms include severe diarrhea that is frequently bloody, vomiting and severe abdominal pain. The other, more critical reason, to avoid e Coli is the risk of HUS, or hemolytic uremic syndrome which is an infection that releases a toxin that can damage red blood cells, thus causing kidney injury. This is rare, though and will manifest after the first week if it’s going to. Symptoms will include facial pallor, decreased urination and dark, tea-colored urine. There’s really nothing you can do to treat HUS at home.

Interested in how to improve you medical survival skills? CLICK HERE to find out!

Treat e Coli by remaining hydrated and resting. Do not take antibiotics for e Coli.

E Coli can be spread from person to person by contact with contaminated feces so, again, hygiene is imperative.

13918020_sSalmonella is a bacteria that affects the intestinal tract and is found in the intestinal tract of poultry and seafood. It’s caused by eating undercooked contaminated meat, seafood or eggs. The food is contaminated by coming into contact with the feces of the infected animal. Fruits and vegetables treated with fertilizer made from the feces of infected animals can carry the bacteria, too.

Contamination can also occur if you don’t keep your work surfaces and utensils/tools clean. If you cut bread with a knife that you cut contaminated chicken with, your bread is now contaminated. Wash your counters, cutting boards and tools with an antibacterial such as a product with bleach.

This can be spread by people infected with salmonella by coming into contact with their feces.

The good thing about salmonella is that it’s easy to kill by cooking the product thoroughly. Wash all of your produce well before eating it and don’t think that just because an egg is clean with no apparent breaks in the shell that it’s safe; some chickens can spread salmonella to the egg before the shell forms. To sum it up, cook poultry, eggs and seafood well and wash your produce.

Symptoms of salmonella will show up anywhere from several hours to two days after contact. It can cause vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, headache, chills and bloody stool. Symptoms typically last four to seven days but it can take several months for your bowels to get back to normal.

Treatment includes maintaining hydration, taking anti-diarrheals and antibiotics. Antibiotics are typically only used when the bacteria has spread to your bloodstream, which isn’t typical.

As you can see, the common thread here is hygiene and proper cooking methods. The best way to avoid food poisoning is to wash your hands, make sure that all of your food is properly prepared and fully cooked, and take precautionary measures when treating a person with food poisoning as all types are contagious if you come into contact with certain bodily fluids; typically feces. In a post-SHTF situation, some of these illnesses can be lethal so the best cure is prevention.

If you know of anything else that I’ve left out or if you have any tips or tricks to help with food poisoning, please tell us about it in the comments section below!

Your Grandma Was Right About Early Risers (And Here’s Scientific Proof)

Your Grandma Was Right About Early Risers (And Here’s Scientific Proof)

William Blake wrote, “Think in the morning. Act in the noon. Eat in the evening. Sleep in the night.”

Henry David Thoreau wrote, “An early-morning walk is a blessing for the whole day.”

Jonathan Swift wrote. “I never knew a man come to greatness or eminence who lay abed late in the morning.”

Benjamin Franklin wrote “Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise.”

For centuries, philosophers have written about the advantages of rising early. However, are early risers really more productive than late risers? Research seems to confirm it, and what’s more, early birds tend to be healthier overall than their night owl compatriots.

First, what is a morning person? The term is informally defined as someone who feels awake and full of energy in the mornings. Morning people also tend to wake up naturally around the same time each day, by 7 a.m. or earlier.

The Hidden Secrets Of Making Herbal Medicines…Right At Your Fingertips!

Research shows that early risers are more productive at work, get better grades and are healthier in mind and body. One theory is that getting up early gives you more time to prepare for the day.

According to a 2014 study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology, work supervisors evaluated morning workers as more conscientious than those who start work later. These findings remained constant even after researchers accounted for total work hours and objective job performance reports.

A study conducted in 2013 of students at five German high schools found that late risers had lower grades than morning people, even after researchers accounted for factors such as cognitive abilities and their motivation to do well in school. Another study conducted by the University of North Texas in Denton of more than 800 college students found that early risers had a GPA that was a full point higher – 3.5 as compared with 2.5 — than their night owl peers.

Your Grandma Was Right About Early Risers (And Here’s Scientific Proof)

Study author Daniel J. Taylor theorized that early bird students find it easier get to classes on time and to study before later classes. He added that students who go to bed earlier might be less likely to drink excessively or to participate in other activities that could negatively affect their academic performance.

Whether or not you are an early or late riser can also affect your body weight, according to research by Northwestern University. The study, which found that early risers have a lower body mass index (BMI) than late risers, connected this finding with the body’s dependence on the circadian rhythm. Lead researcher Phyllis C. Zee concluded that if we do not get enough light at the appropriate times of day, our body clock could be affected, leading to an altered metabolism and weight gain.

Early risers also tend to be more consistent in adhering to an exercise regime, according to the American Council on Exercise. Most studies indicate that people who exercise in the morning set and maintain more rigorous workout schedules.

Could This All-Natural ‘Detox’ Capsule Have Extended John Wayne’s Life?

An altered body clock can even affect your driving ability. Spanish researchers found that night owls taking an 8 a.m. driving test performed worse than they did on the same test given at 8 p.m. Early risers, on the other hand, had consistently better scores at both times.

An interesting aspect of these and other studies about early risers is that the findings do not have to do with the amount of sleep we get, but instead with when we sleep. Our bodies are designed to sleep with a natural circadian rhythm that is connected with sunlight and darkness. To put it simply, most people who adjust to this cycle sleep better.

Research by Harvard University suggests that night owls can reset their circadian rhythm by going outside into the daylight early in the morning. If you are a late riser, one way to work your way into an earlier wake-up time is to get up a half-hour earlier for three days and then to repeat the process with another 30 minutes adjustment.

If you need more of an inducement to “get up and at ‘em” earlier, research indicates that early risers are happier than night owls. According to a University of Toronto study of more than 700 adults, morning people reported up to 25 percent higher feelings of cheerfulness, happiness and alertness than their night owl counterparts did. The study linked early exposure to daylight to more energy and a reduced risk of depression.

Convinced? Here are some other tips to move to more of an early bird lifestyle:

  • Sleep in a quiet, dark room for effective sleep. Turn off electronic screens 30 to 60 minutes before you get in bed.
  • Get everything you will need in the morning – such as clothes and lunch — together before you go to bed. Shortening your morning to-do list makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning.
  • Maintain a regular evening routine that will let your mind and body know it is time for sleep.
  • Be consistent by setting your alarm clock for the same time every morning — weekdays and weekends.
  • Move the alarm clock away from the bed so that you must get out of bed to reach it. Set it to play a pleasing tone and skip the snooze button once and for all.
  • Open your curtains and shades to let in as much light as possible.
  • Drink a glass of water soon after rising. Dehydration causes fatigue. If you are groggy when you wake up, you may need water, not more sleep.
  • Eat breakfast for the energy and brain food it provides.

The bottom line is your grandmother was right. Early birds do get the worm. Why not make getting up a half hour earlier or more one of your New Year’s Resolutions?

By AccuWeather

A glancing blow from the polar vortex will direct cold air southward and could raise the chance of snow in the central and eastern United States toward the middle of January.

The pattern of cold air coming and going will be a theme through January.

According to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams, “Arctic air will leave quickly, after giving the Great Lakes and Northeast a cold shock this week.”

Temperatures will rebound to above-average levels in much of the Midwest and Northeast during the latter part of this week and this coming weekend.

Cook With Your Thermos! A Few Emergency Cooking Methods

Click here to view the original post.

thermos cookingWhether out in the big, bad woods or the middle of a disaster, knowing how to cook in an emergency is a beautiful thing. There are actually lots of ways to enjoy a hot meal on the proverbial fly, even if all you have is a thermos!

Check out these emergency cooking methods.

Thermos Options

Would you believe most slow cooker recipes are doable in a thermos? You’ll obviously have to use a lot less food, and you’d definitely need a quality thermos, but yes, it’s very possible. Types of food you can easily cook in a thermos include rice and beans, soups, chili, stews, oatmeal, freeze-dried food, noodles and other pasta, and even meats such as chicken.

Cooking time varies depending on what food you’re working with. For example, rice is going to take longer than noodles. Boil the food before sticking it in the thermos in order to cook it properly. You may have to experiment to get the right cooking time for each option, but that just means you’re honing your nifty survival skills!

Iron Options

If you’re wondering if “iron” refers to the de-wrinkling appliance, you’d be right. Your iron is actually a great little cooking tool, particularly for reheating food, though you will need a power source. Wrap vegetables, fried foods, chicken, or fish that’s already been cooked in about three layers of foil, and turn your iron on its highest setting. Use an ironing board or other viable surface, and place the iron on the wrapped food for three to five minutes. If your food contains “juices,” make sure they don’t drip onto the ironing board.

Solar-Powered Cooker

Additional emergency options depend again on whether you have access to an electrical outlet, or if the sun’s out. Solar-powered portable cookers are a great option, as you don’t have to worry about a viable outlet so long as the sun is shining. Such cookers are low-tech devices, with large-scale options capable of cooking food for hundreds of people.

Emergency Power/Hot Plates

There’s also emergency power options to look into, and hot plates. A hot plate is simply one burner, but it works very, very well. If you invest in emergency power solutions, you’ll be able to use a hot plate or similar appliance no matter how long the power’s out.

What are your favorite emergency cooking methods? Share them in the comments section!

MRE’s In’s and Outs (Video & Transcript)

Jack: “Hey guys, Jack Rich with Black Scout Survival. We are talking about MRE’s. Meals ready to eat, breakfast, lunch and dinner warriors around the globe. The MRE is a self-contained, one meal, that can with stand exposure to harsher environments elements. It is sealed in a package and is pretty heavy in the state it comes in. Normally when I was in operation overseas we would field strip these to cut down on weight.”

“A single meal last about three years at 80° temperatures. The thing is, these things are not supposed to be commercially sold. They have to stay in their own package. You can find them at gun shows, eBay or what not. The thing is, is that MRE’s don’t have an expiration date on them. So whenever you buy an MRE in the package it comes in, it could be bad, you never know.”

“The only way you can tell if an MRE is good or bad is by the box it comes in. The box it comes in will have the date it was produced, the inspection date which is three years form the date it was produced. On the box you will see a little red sticker that looks like a doughnut. If the doughnut matches the inside of the circle, the two colors match so it looks like an O that means the package has gone bad because of the temperature of use . So just be real careful when you buy MRE’s unless you buy them in the case. You buy them in the case then you know what kind of condition they’ve been kept in.”

“As I’ve said, each MRE is on average 1,250 calories. We’ll open up the MRE for those that are not familiar with it. The MRE comes with a variety of things. It comes with the main meal or entree. It comes with a side item. It comes with cheese or peanut butter or jelly. It will come with wheat bread or crackers or some kind of bread. Usually come with some kind of cookies, or brownies or cakes. This one comes with M&M’s some will call it candy. This one came with cappuccino mocha. Some will come with milk shakes and what not. Then you’ll have an accessory pack, it usually comes with hot sauce, some gum, and matches, toilet paper, moist toilette and some sort of drink mix to and a spoon.”

“Basically a lot of good stuff you know,, these area good for camping, disaster situations, your bug out bag you know. I would, if you’re gonna carry them; I would not carry them in the sealed case it comes in. I would take it out and get rid of non-essential items and maybe put it back in its case or a Ziploc bag. These obviously can be used as tinder. These cardboard boxes.”

“How you heat up an MRE , or how I heat up an MRE, I see a lot of people do it a lot of different ways. You’ll take the heater and tear off the top of it and fill water up to the line. What I’ll do, I see a lot of people just put the meals in the hot water bag itself, but what I normally do is put the heater in the card board box and then put the meal and the entree on both sides and set it just like that and let it heat up on both sides. The good thing about MRE’s is you don’t have to heat up. You can eat them just like they are. When I was on patrol I would eat it just as is and not heat it up.”

“That is information about an MRE that is hopefully helpful. Thank for watching Black Scout.”

Time To Push Back At Political Correctness

Click here to view the original post.

political correctnessOver the last couple of years, we’ve seen a definite rise in political correctness. Not only are they now trying to control our speech with it, but the left is using this insidious method to literally control society.

There is no question that political correctness reached a new high in 2015, even going so far as to ban the Confederate battle flag and remove historic monuments from many southern states.

The whole concept of political correctness is insidious. It’s one of the left’s many tools that they use to control the right, trying to force us to conform to their will. In that, it’s no different than Muslims trying to force others to live under Sharia Law or Communists forcing people to bow to the state. It’s all about control and using fear to control people.

We have to understand that fear is the mechanism that is used to implement political correctness. We who are controlled by it are afraid of being labeled racist, sexist or any other “ist” that the left comes up with. It’s as if those words were true badges of dishonor and that we would be permanently branded with them, much like the woman in “The Scarlet Letter.”

Well, I think we could all learn a lesson from Hester Prynne, the protagonist of The Scarlet Letter. She didn’t hide her letter, but wore it boldly, like a soldier wearing a medal. She was proud of who she was and if others didn’t like it, that was their problem.

While I don’t agree with adultery, I do agree with standing up for who you are. Fortunately, more and more conservatives are getting fed up with political correctness and finally taking a stand against it, regardless of the consequences. I’m not just talking about politicians either; everyday people are taking a stand as well, even when they know it’s going to cost them.

The thing is, if we don’t take a stand against political correctness, the liberals are going to get their way and succeed in controlling us. They will do it with nothing more than nasty words and name calling. In other words, we will be allowing them to control us with their immaturity.

How many times have you seen it? A liberal and a conservative are discussing an issue and the liberal runs out of arguments. That’s not too hard, as all they have are their emotional talking points. Once they run out, they resort to name calling, generally using the term “racist” but if that doesn’t apply then any of a number of other names that they have readily memorized in their arsenal.

But political correctness goes far beyond name calling. In a sense, we can call the movement #BlackLivesMatter a political correctness movement. They have decided on a particular narrative and are using violence to silence anyone who disagrees with it. Actually, they’re even using violence against those who haven’t disagreed with it, but simply haven’t yet agreed with their stance forcibly enough. In this, they are intimidating people, especially politicians, into supporting their cause.

The LGBT community is doing the same. Although they represent only about two percent of the population, they are controlling much of the political agenda of this country. In some ways, they’ve succeeded in eliminating the First Amendment rights of the rest of the country, simply by calling everything that is said against them a hate crime. By invoking those magic words, they’ve turned ordinary law-abiding citizens into criminals, complete with criminal penalty.

Or what about the law suits which the LGBT community has succeeded in bringing against businesses who refuse to serve them, specifically those who refuse to serve their weddings? For most of my life, businesses had the right to refuse service to anyone. The only exception was to that was critical services, such as utilities or medical services. But today, Christian businesses who refuse to support their weddings are charged with hate crimes and fined out of business by the government. The worst part of that is that they purposely seek out those businesses, just so that they can attack them.

Every leftist special interest group is taking part in political correctness these days. They are the purveyors of this insidious system and the creators of its rules. All any of them have to do is get the media to agree with their definition, and the new politically correct term is used or the new politically incorrect term is flagged for abusing anyone who uses it.

It is the media, more than anyone else, who controls the whole political correctness machine. As agents of the leftist agenda, they are the promoters and purveyors of leftist ideology. News stories are selected and even changed to match the talking points of the left, taking every opportunity to villainize anyone who doesn’t toe the line.

The Long Way to Nobody’s Freedom

I have to say that this system has grown through the years. When I was a young man, we had something called Freedom of Speech. If others were offended by what was said, they had a right to respond, or in extreme circumstances, take a swing at the speaker. Political correctness seeks to suppress those rights, with the ultimate goal of eliminating them.

We must understand that this is the ultimate goal of political correctness. The elitist left can’t eliminate our Constitutional Rights, no matter how much they want to. So, they have to use other means, specifically social pressure.

Eric Holder referred to this in the context of eliminating our Second Amendment right to bear arms, but that’s not the only place where the left is using it. They are specifically attacking our rights of Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Religion, both guaranteed under the First Amendment.

This is why it is so important that we take a stand against political correctness. We need to point out its hypocrisy wherever we see it. We also need to be willing to be labeled as a racist or any other type of “ist” the PC police want to use. If we allow fear to rule us, we will end up losing our rights.

Fortunately, mainstream America is getting fed up with this and the silent majority is taking a stand. Many are finding their voices and speaking out against this insidious insanity. Conservative actors, singers, politicians and businessmen are using their pulpit to make their voice heard. In doing so, they are making our voice heard as well.

We need to add our voice to this. It’s great that Donald Trump, Charles Daniels and Chuck Norris take a stand; but we can’t allow them to stand alone. We too must take our stand, declaring that this country was established on freedom and that the PC police have no Constitutionally authorized authority to take that freedom away from us. If we don’t, they will keep pushing until we lose that freedom.

Video first seen on Fox News

Perhaps this is one of the greatest things to come out of the 2016 elections. Trump started it, with his politically incorrect statements, which resonated with so many. He gave voice to what many were thinking and is wealthy enough that he doesn’t care whether people like what he says or not. The thing is, lots of people like what he is saying, even some on the other side of the aisle.

It isn’t Trumps wealth alone that makes it possible for him to be politically incorrect so successfully. If it were, then the Koch Brothers would get away with it too. Yet they are villainized regularly by the political left. No, Trump has something more going for him; he knows how to work with the media.

Trump has been accused more than once of being a showman and of turning the elections into a circus. The thing is, in doing just that, he’s kept the media’s eye on him, allowing him to speak his mind so effectively. While the PC police have screamed “Foul” at every statement he’s made, the American people, especially those on the right, have stood with him and have done so in ever increasing numbers.

Regardless of who ends up winning the 2016 presidential elections, we need to continue taking a stand against political correctness. The Germans didn’t do that in the 1930s, due to fear of the NAZI Brown shirts. That cost them their nation. Well, guess what? We’re facing the very same thing today.

Maybe the current crop of PC police doesn’t wear brown shirts and maybe they’re not spouting off the same slogans, but they’re using the same methods. They are intimidating anyone who disagrees with them, sometimes with words, and when that doesn’t work, with violence.

The point is, the results will be the same. We either stand up to the PC police or they will take control. Then, the country will become the socialist “paradise” that they want and any of us who try to take a stand will be silently carted off to a labor camp somewhere. If that’s not what you want, it’s time to take a stand.

Where Will It All Lead?

Click here to view the original post.

The news from the Middle East becomes more chaotic each day, and threatens to involve the whole world.  The latest headlines which disclose the execution of 47 dissidents by the government of Saudi Arabia has ignited the Arab world, and pitted the Sunni guardian of Islam (Saudi Arabia) against the Shia guardian of the Muslim faith (Iran).  It doesn’t help their centuries-old battle for supremacy when a prominent Shiite cleric, Nimr Baqr al-Nimr, was among the executed.

One must understand the basis of their acrimony in order to see how it might affect the fragile peace of the world.  The blog, Behold Israel, explains it succinctly and concisely.  The division between Shia and Sunni dates back to the death of the Prophet Muhammad, and the question of who was to take over the leadership of the Muslim nation.  Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by many of the Prophet’s companions, that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job. This is what was done, and the Prophet Muhammad’s close friend and advisor, Abu Bakr, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation. The word “Sunni” in Arabic comes from a word meaning “one who follows the traditions of the Prophet.”  (The adoption of the name Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, by the leader of ISIS, shows his allegiance to the Sunni branch of the Muslim faith).

On the other hand, some Muslims share the belief that leadership should have stayed within the Prophet’s own family, among those specifically appointed by him, or among Imams appointed by God Himself.  The Shia Muslims believe that following the Prophet Muhammad’s death, leadership should have passed directly to his cousin/son-in-law, Ali bin Abu Talib. Throughout history, Shia Muslims have not recognized the authority of elected Muslim leaders, choosing instead to follow a line of Imams which they believe have been appointed by the Prophet Muhammad or God Himself. The word “Shia” in Arabic means a group or supportive party of people. The commonly-known term is shortened from the historical “Shia-t-Ali,” or “the Party of Ali.” They are also known as followers of “Ahl-al-Bayt” or “People of the Household” (of the Prophet).
Sayyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei is the current Ayatollah and Supreme Leader of Iran.  Khamenei claims to hold the title of Sayyid, which means that he claims direct patrilineal descent from Muhammad.  So you can start to put the puzzle pieces together and see why President Bashar al-Assad, of Syria, who describes himself as an Alawite, a sect of Shia Islam, is battling the Sunni fighters of ISIS, and receiving the support of Shia Iran.  This naturally puts Saudia Arabia (Sunni) in direct conflict with Iran, but also puts them in a precarious position with their own Sunni citizens.
Because of their alliance with the West (and primarily with the United States) and their opposition to the rise of the barbaric Islamic State (ISIS, who is also Sunni), there is a growing tension among those in Saudia Arabia who would like to turn more toward the fiery doctrine of Wahhabism, which is at the heart of ISIS’s ideology.  How does the new leader of Saudia Arabia, King Salman bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, maintain allegiance from his people and still preserve his oil dealings with the West?  How does our country’s treaty with Shia Iran to continue their nuclear program sit with King Salman’s Sunni populace?  It is a balancing act that threatens to engulf the entire world into choosing sides.
Add to this the fact that Saudia Arabia lies between the ISIS-occupied regions of Iraq (Sunni) and Iran (Shia), and contains the holy Islamic sites of Mecca and Medina, and you can see that it is truly at the center of a powder keg.
Will that result in the Judgment of the Nations that Isaiah 17 speaks about?  Will we hear “the roar of many peoples, like the roaring of the seas?”  Will the “nations rage like the raging of many waters?”  And will there be “sudden terror” in the evening, and before morning, “it is gone?”
I know that we can find many prophecies in the Bible that seem like they are pointing to current world events, and I know that none of us can know the mind or exact plans of God.  But even if the Day of the Lord is years or centuries away, we cannot ignore that the confluence of ISIS with the Sunni House of Saud and the Shia clerics of Iran could cause desolation that will spill over to the rest of the world.  We already see the effects of Middle Eastern refugees — both innocent ones and those who wish to infiltrate Europe and the West with their hostility and hate.  How much more will we have to endure if nuclear weapons are engaged?
If nothing else, these executions in Saudia Arabia, the continued march of ISIS, and the disruption in relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran may have implications for peace efforts in Syria and the rest of the Muslim world.  We are fooling ourselves if we think that it won’t affect us.  For now, we can’t predict where all this leads, but it is wise for us to stay alert, pray for God’s intervention, and be ready to share the Gospel with those who will be fearful.  That’s it in a nutshell, and it goes without saying … we are living in interesting (and dangerous) times!
Amos 13:40-41      Beware, therefore, lest what is said in the Prophets should come about: “Look, you scoffers, be astounded and perish; for I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will not believe, even if one tells it to you.”

Chicken Crust Pizza Recipe – A Low Carb, High Protein Treat

Many people make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight and exercise more. Diet websites are hitting all time records with people looking for the miracle answer to decrease those dreaded numbers on the scales. Although we all know that by eating more fruits and vegetables and by eating less we would most likely lose weight over time, there are just some temptations that are hard to resist.  For me, pizza is my downfall.  I honestly could eat pizza several times a week (ok, let’s be honest – several times a day!).   Hot pizza fresh from a brick oven, cold pizza straight out of the fridge the next morning, buffalo chicken pizza, veggie pizza – it doesn’t matter – I LOVE them all! The problem is that typical pizza crust is loaded with refined white flour and sometimes sugar is even added without us knowing.  Not a good match when trying to reduce the waistline.  Although we typically compensate by preparing a cauliflower based crust, this week we had to improvise. We had eaten all of the cauliflower in the countless numbers of salads and veggies and hummus dip that we have consumed over the first few days of […]

How ToBecome Prosperous(1904)

Dateline: 5 January 2016, AD

I was recently looking through an old gardening magazine and found an ad for a new book with the title, Working With The Hands, by Booker T. Washington. I was familiar with Booker T. Washington’s autobiography, Up From Slavery, but not Working With The Hands. The title intrigued me. I found a copy on Ebay and bought it.

Working With The Hands is a 246-page book that was published in 1904. It is the story of B.T. Washington’s life work at the Tuskeegee Institute in Alabama.

I thoroughly enjoyed the book and it’s message. Booker T. Washington was, without a doubt, a deliberate agrarian. His objective was to help his race achieve self reliance and economic freedom by learning better farming practices, valuable trade skills and useful domestic skills. He encouraged freed slaves and the children of freed slaves to pursue land ownership, and he discouraged debt slavery.

Working With The Hands is over a hundred years old, so much of the information is therefore dated, but there are timeless principles and concepts that can be applied to today, and to all races living in the throes of our crumbling post-industrial culture.

The following advice from Working With The Hands is found in the chapter titled, Helping The Mothers

How To Become Prosperous

Keep no more than one dog. Stay away from court. Buy no snuff, whiskey and tobacco. Raise your own pork. Raise your own vegetables. Put away thirty cents for every dollar you spend.

Get a good supply of poultry. Set your hens.Keep your chickens until they bring a good price.

Go to town on Thursday instead of Saturday. Buy no more than you need. Stay in town no longer than necessary.

The Best Mint Brownie Recipe In The World

Click here to view the original post.

This is the best mint brownie recipe in the world, it really is. It’s easy to make and the brownies are chewy, moist and soft. All I can say is top a brownie with mint and frost them with a ganache and you are in heaven. If you love chocolate, you will want to make these brownies today, or at least by the weekend. Here’s the deal, if you take a plate of these brownies to a party or neighborhood get together they will disappear ASAP. Plan on taking the recipe to the party, I guarantee people will want it. The ingredients are usually in your pantry or your refrigerator so you won’t even need to go to the store. Remember, you can freeze butter so when it’s on sale, stock up big time. I buy enough butter for 6 months, generally. Okay, maybe 9 months, I can’t run out of real butter. I still have not found a good “food storage” #10 can of butter that meets my standards, yet. I keep testing every company. Yes, I have a few #10 cans of the icky tasting powdered butter I can use for baking. I get the dry heaves just thinking about the smell of the cans I have tested and it’s several, trust me. When I mixed it with water the smell was awful. If we have a disaster I have a few cans of real butter that will work for sure: Red Feather PURE CANNED BUTTER – 6 cans of 12oz each – great for survival earthquake kit These cans are too expensive to use to make these brownies. That butter will be saved for bartering or a very special occasion. You will still need some #10 cans of butter stored, but I would only use it for baking.

Chewy Mint Brownie Recipe

This is a picture of the pan of baked brownies with the mint frosting ready to spread around the large “brownie” in the pan before being cut into small portions.

The Best Mint Brownie Recipe In The World by FoodStorageMoms

  • 1-1/2 cups butter
  • 1 cup unsweetened baking cocoa
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 1-1/2 cups flour (I use bread flour because that’s all I have besides the freshly ground hard white wheat)
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 teaspoons vanilla

Instructions for the brownie part:

Grab a saucepan and melt the butter with the cocoa and stir constantly. Remove from the stove and add the remaining ingredients. I use my hand mixer like this one: KitchenAid KHM512ER 5-Speed Ultra Power Hand Mixer, Empire Red.I do add the eggs one at a time because I am always afraid they may become “scrambled eggs”. I use the hand mixer to combine all the above ingredients until smooth. Grease a cookie sheet like this one: Nordic Ware Natural Aluminum Commercial Baker’s Half Sheet. Scoop the batter onto the cookie sheet and spread evenly over the entire pan.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and bake 25-30 minute, or until the edges come away from the pan slightly. Let cool and now onto the next step.

Mint Frosting Layer

I spread the mint frosting layer on top and wow does it smell yummy! Just a few drops of peppermint goes a long way to flavor this frosting. I added a few drops of green food coloring (optional) as welI. I like the look of a little green between the layers of brownie and the ganache.

The Best Mint Brownie Recipe In The World by FoodStorageMoms

  • 9 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup milk (maybe a bit more if it’s too thick)
  • 1-1/2 capfuls of mint or just a few drops of peppermint essential oils (you will need to taste test this part and gauge how much YOU like-I do not like mine too “minty”)
  • Green food coloring (optional)

I use my hand mixer to mix the ingredients above for about 5 minutes because it needs to be very fluffy. The next step is to cover the cooled brownies with this mint frosting all the way to the edges of the brownie pan. Once this is done, place the pan in the freezer for at least an hour to “harden” up so it’s ready for the ganache topping. I call it ganache topping, not sure it is, but that’s how I roll. The brownie pan must be totally hard before we can frost with the ganache.

Ganache Topping

I wish you could see these mint brownies in person and taste them because this really is the best mint brownie recipe in the world.

The Best Mint Brownie Recipe In The World by FoodStorageMoms

  • 3 cups chocolate chips
  • 3/4 cups butter (softened) I realize that most ganache’s are made with heavy cream-I just don’t know what to call this yummy topping!

If you don’t have a double-boiler to melt the chocolate chips and the butter then use your microwave. I microwave for one minute, stir and repeat this process. Once the mixture is totally melted be ready to spread the mixture over the cold brownie pan you have removed from the freezer. I do use a double boiler sometimes for my ganache that is similar to this one: Farberware Classic 2-Qt. Covered Double Boiler Spread the ganache quickly, covering the entire pan the best you can. Place the brownies in the refrigerator until ready to cut and enjoy!

I have been trying to figure out how to make a really good mint brownie recipe for years. Years ago my family would buy these fabulous mint brownies from a store called Dick’s Market in Centerville, Utah. Well, I have been experimenting with several recipes, and of course I modified every one of them until I could get the ONE mint brownie recipe that was as close to that one as possible.  Thanks for stopping by today. Let me know if you make this mint brownie recipe, I would love to hear from you.

Here's What Obama's Newest Gun Control Actions Would Do

President Obama is planning to begin his last year in office by expanding gun control via executive order, the White House announced Monday night.

The White House says some of the new actions don’t require Congressional approval.

Among them: Expand background checks so that they include guns sold at gun shows and on the Internet. Another action would put $500 million toward mental health and would prevent some Social Security recipients from accessing guns. The White House would need Congressional approval for the new funds but apparently wouldn’t need approval for background checks.

“Sympathy is not enough to stop gun violence,” a White House website blog said. “Congress has repeatedly failed to take action, blocking commonsense reforms supported by the vast majority of the American people – including gun owners themselves. The President has a responsibility to do everything in his power to reduce gun violence. This week, he will.”

How To Hide Your Guns, And Other Off-Grid Caches…

Additionally, the White House said Obama has directed the Departments of Defense, Justice, and Homeland Security to “conduct or sponsor research into gun safety technology.”

“The President has also directed the departments to review the availability of smart gun technology on a regular basis, and to explore potential ways to further its use and development to more broadly improve gun safety,” the White House blog said.

Obama spotlighted gun control during his New Year’s radio address.

“A few months ago, I directed my team at the White House to look into any new actions I can take to help reduce gun violence,” Obama said. “And on Monday, I’ll meet with our attorney general, Loretta Lynch, to discuss our options.”

Republican leaders remained skeptical that Obama’s actions would have any impact.

“The administration has not communicated with us, and we have not been briefed,” AshLee Strong, a spokeswoman for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wisconsin), told CNN. “We will consider options once we have information, but what seems apparent is none of these ideas would have prevented the recent atrocities.”

Unstoppable California Gas Leak Being Called Worst Catastrophe Since BP Spill

Click here to view the original post.

9290351154_ccfeb429df_oBy Claire Bernish

Methane gas continues spewing, unchecked, into the air over southern California from a fractured well to an underground storage site — at such an alarming rate that low-flying planes have necessarily been diverted by the FAA, lest internal combustion engines meet highly volatile gas and, well, blow the entire area to hell.

This is, indeed, the biggest environmental catastrophe since the BP Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010; and for now, there is no way to stop it.

This methane disaster is worse than can be sufficiently described in words, because while it’s estimated well over 100,000 pounds of methane spew into the atmosphere every hour, the leak can’t be halted, at least until spring. Even then, that stoppage depends entirely on the efficacy of a proposed fix — which remains a dubiously open question.

According to the California Air Resources Board, methane — a greenhouse gas 72 times more impactful in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide — has been escaping from the Aliso Canyon site withforce equivalent “to a volcanic eruption” for about two months now. So far, the total leaked gas measures somewhere around 100,000 tons — adding “approximately one-quarter to the regular statewide methane emissions” during that same time frame.

“The relative magnitude of emissions from the leak compared to other sources of methane in the State underscores the urgency of stopping the gas leak. This comes on top of any problems caused by odor and any potential impacts from exposure,” states the initial report on the Aliso leak by air quality officials

“The enormity of the Aliso Canyon gas leak cannot be overstated. Gas is escaping through a ruptured pipe more than 8,000 feet underground, and it shows no signs of stopping. As the pressure from the weight on top of the pipe causes the gas to diffuse, it only continues to dissipate across a wider and wider area,” explained Erin Brockovich, who spent time in nearby Porter Ranch investigating the leak.

Officials and experts are concerned, and they can’t recall another leak of this magnitude in decades — if ever. “I asked this question of our staff of 30 years,” said Steve Bohlen, who recently left his position as state supervisor of oil and gas. “This is unique in the last three or four decades. This is an unusual event, period.”

Though methane, itself, has no odor, the addition of odorants methyl mercaptan and tetrahydrothiophene — a safety measure to alert people by smell to the presence of natural gas — has made the enormous methane seepage impossible to ignore. Thousands of households have evacuated the area, despite little help, much less information, from the gas company about when they might be able to return. As reported by the Los Angeles Times,SoCalGas spokesperson Michael Mizrahi claimed the company had paid to relocate and house 2,092 households — but that effort is severely lacking, says Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer.

Yesterday, the city attorney’s office sought a restraining order to mandate SoCalGas relocate residents in the affected area within 48 hours of their request; and it is also seeking a “special master” to oversee the entire relocation operation, which is currently being handled by the gas company. Not only does the present relocation lack speed and coordination, but a housing crunch has resulted in surrounding areas — in some cases landlords, who prefer year-long leases to shorter terms, have driven rent as high as $8,500 per month. Hotels are operating at capacity, and in “some of those hotel rooms there are not enough beds for the people who are being moved,” explained chief deputy to the city attorney, James P. Clark.

“It’s time Porter Ranch residents had direct and complete answers about all facets of this leak,” Clark continued, “including what caused it, how to stop it, and what will be done to assure it never happens again. They should receive better, quicker, and completely adequate relocation assistance.”

On Thursday, Los Angeles Unified School District board members voted unanimously to close two Porter Ranch schools and relocate their 1,900 students and staff to different locations for the foreseeable future. A local emergency has been declared by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Multiple lawsuits have now been initiated against SoCalGas and/or its parent company, Sempra Energy. A Los Angeles firm representing three of the families, who filed their suit Friday, described in a statement that the well has been “leaking noxious odors, hazardous gases, chemicals, pollutants, and contaminants due to a massive well failure and blowout. However, SoCalGas failed to inform residents of neighboring communities of the disastrous gas leak in a timely manner, putting the health and well-being of thousands of families in jeopardy.” Those suits allege “negligence, strict liability of ultra-hazardous activity, private nuisance, inverse condemnation, and trespass.”

A class-action lawsuit has also been filed on behalf of the Save Porter Ranch group; and City Attorney Mike Feuer filed a civil suit earlier this month due to the leak’s continued threat to residents’ health and damage to the environment, alleging failure by SoCalGas to prevent the leak and further exacerbation of “the effects of that failure by allowing the acute odor and health problems faced by the community to persist for more than one month, to say nothing about the indefinite time it will persist into the future,” state the court documents. “No community should have to endure what the residents of Porter Ranch have suffered from the gas company’s continued failure to stop that leak,” Feuer stated.

SoCalGas insists there will be no long-term health effects resulting from the persistent leak; but as Brockovich pointed out, “no one really knows the potential long-term side effects of benzene and radon, the carcinogens that are commonly found in natural gas.” In an email to the Los Angeles Daily News, SoCalGas stated they were “providing air filters for people’s homes” and “have established a claims process for those who feel they may have suffered harm or injury. And our top priority remains stopping this leak as quickly and safely as possible.

While the odor added to the leaking gas can cause symptoms for some, the gas is not toxic and county health officials have said the leak does not pose a long-term health risk.

But what’s making this massive leak so difficult to stop pertains to the storage ‘container,’ itself. “We have the largest natural gas storage system in the world,” boasts Chris McGill, vice president of the American Gas Association. In the United States, old underground oil fields are often put to use as storage vessels for natural gas — because, hey, that geology worked just fine to hold oil for millions of years, so why not natural gas?

In fact, there are some 300 such depleted subterranean oil fields being employed this way around the United States. Aliso Canyon, a natural gas storage site since the 1970s, has one of the largest capacities: 86 billion cubic feet. During the summer, gas earmarked for winter heating is pumped into these underground cavities by SoCalGas — and the process is reversed with the turn of the seasons. However, this year, workers encountered what quickly became evident was anything but a typical hiccup. As Wiredreported:

On October 23, workers noticed the leak at a 40-year-old well in Aliso Canyon. Small leaks are routine, says Bohlen, and SoCalGas did what it routinely does: put fluid down the well to stop the leak and tinker with the well head. It didn’t work. The company tried it five more times, and the gas kept leaking. At this point, it was clear the leak was far from routine, and the problem was deeper underground.

Beginning December 4th, SoCalGas crews began drilling a relief well to intercept the fissured pipe. Cement will then be poured into both to seal the wells permanently. Of course, for this to work, crews must locate that original pipe, which is a mere seven inches in diameter, thousands of feet underground — without accidentally creating any sparks, whatsoever. Work near the leak site, therefore, has been prohibited after nightfall, when lighting equipment could potentially cause such a spark; though drilling for the relief well is situated far enough away to continue nonstop.

Everyday Carry Gear – 11 Items You Should Always Have on You (Ad)

Flaring, or setting a deliberate fire to burn off excess gas, simply isn’t an option. The mammoth scope of this leak means a flare would ultimately complicate matters even further.

“There is no stone being left unturned to get this well closed,” Bohlen stated. “It’s our top priority.”

In the meantime, it will be months without any possibility of halting this disaster-in-motion. Sickened, uprooted, and furious residents can rest assured, though, because even as methane spews nonstop into the air, SoCalGas did have this consolation:

We are deeply sorry for the frustration.

The No-Nonsense Guide to Getting Out of Debt

No-Nonsense Guide to Getting Out of Debt| Backdoor Survival

Let’s face it.  We live in a world fueled by debt and for many, having debt is an ordinary part of life,  For them, racking up the credit cards at Christmas and slowing paying them off while collecting massive interest is a way of life.  Many never pay them off.

From where I sit, it is understandable when people owe money for extremely large purchases like real estate or a reliable vehicle.  That makes sense, but these days, a great deal of consumer debt is lifestyle debt. Lifestyle debt is credit used to purchase clothing, go on vacations, and buy electronics. It is also debt incurred while keeping up with the Joneses, even when the Joneses are both doctors or lawyers with huge incomes while the rest of us work at far lower paying jobs or are retired.

No-Nonsense Guide to Getting Out of Debt| Backdoor Survival

You may be wondering why all of this talk about debt is on a preparedness website. Shouldn’t we be discussing beans, bullets, and band-aids?  Not always.  It is my belief that getting out of debt should actually be one of the top priorities for anyone interested in self-reliance.  And isn’t self-reliance what prepping is all about?

Becoming debt-free requires a lot of determination and stamina. It is my hope that this no-nonsense guide to getting out of debt will help you reach a whole new level of financial security.  Shall we begin?

How bad is it?

A 2013 report stated that the average American household was in debt to the tune of more than $225,000.  It gets worse – the average family also has less than $500 in savings. And worse still, 1 in 3 households have at least one debt in collections.

Add to this our floundering economy. Businesses are failing left and right, companies are downsizing, and hours are being cut. So not only do many Americans owe a vast amount of money, their income is on shaky ground as well.  According to Michael Snyder, the founder of The Economic Collapse Blog and the author of The Beginning Of The End and Get Prepared Now, an alarming 102.6 million Americans of working age do not have jobs right now.

With so much debt and so little savings, a job loss would not be an inconvenience for most families. Instead, it would be absolutely catastrophic.

How being debt-free can help

In a buy now, pay later society, most people don’t understand how precariously close to the edge they are with their finances. Every time you purchase something using credit instead of cash, you are increasing your monthly financial obligations. If something goes wrong, then suddenly your family will be in survival mode. The lower your monthly obligations are, the longer you will be able to survive.

If the primary earner in the household were to suffer a job loss or a a reduction in hours, chances are they would receive unemployment benefits while looking for a new position. But these benefits are only a fraction of what the person was earning before. If they were to suffer a debilitating illness, even those meager benefits would be unavailable.

At this point you are in survival mode.

In these situations, it is vital to be able to cut back spending to cover the absolute necessities, things like: shelter, food, medication, insurance, and utilities. What you have left over after those necessities is all you will have remaining to pay for things like debt. The lower your debt, the lower your financial requirements are when you get into survival mode.

If you are deeply in debt when such a situation occurs, it may be impossible to keep up with your payments. The next thing you know, bill collectors will be phoning and property will be getting foreclosed on or repossessed.  This is not a pretty situation and for all intents and purposes, can be a major life-changer that will take years to dig out of.

That is why next to remaining healthy and fit, there is nothing more important than debt reduction or debt elimination for a person who is concerned with preparing for the unforeseen.

Find out where you are

You might be saying “Okay, I get it.  What do I do now?”  The answer is that you need to figure out where you stand.  What are your expenses?

Compiling this information is not fun.  It actually can be downright painful. But, if you don’t know exactly where you stand financially, you cannot make a plan to bail yourself out (unless you are the US Government but that is another story).

What you need to do is is gather up all of your bills, bank account statements, and checkbook register.  On a piece of paper, track where your money is going.  List the following:

Car payments
Vehicle operating expenses (fuel, repairs)
Credit card and other debt payments
Telephone/Cell phone
Extracurricular activities for the kids or grandkids
Extracurricular activities for the adults
Dining out
School expenses
Recreational spending
Miscellaneous (anything that doesn’t fall into the above categories gets its own category or goes here)

Now, separate all of these into the following categories:

Essential expenses: These are the basics that nearly every family must pay for, like shelter, food, insurance, utilities, taxes.

Secondary expenses: These are the things that are nice to have, but not absolutely necessary, like cable, the internet, cell phones, a second vehicle – and they will not be the same for every family. For example, a friend of mine home schools and the program she uses requires the internet, making that payment an essential one.

Debt expenses: These are monthly payments that can be paid off altogether, removing them from the budget equation: credit cards, car payments, house payments, loans, lines of credit.

This will give you a clear picture of where you are and your family’s bare minimum for “operating expenses” – the essential expenses in the first category.  In a truly desperate scenario, that is the amount of money you must have to survive.

A quick guide to getting out of debt

Getting out of debt requires dedication and determination. You have to make a firm decision to limit your spending and to make some budgetary changes to dig yourself out of the hole.

The best method for getting out of debt that I know of is the “snowball method,” a technique promoted by debt-free living guru Dave Ramsey in his book The Total Money Makeover.

Here is the general idea:

1.) Write down a list of your monthly payments on debt, then organize them from lowest monthly payment to highest monthly payment.

2.) Take any extra money you might have on hand and pay off the debt with the lowest payment as quickly as possible. Just pay the minimum on all other debts.

3.) Once the lowest-payment debt is paid off, take all of the money you were paying on that debt and apply it additionally to the debt with the next lowest payment. For example, if your lowest payment debt was $18 a month, take that $18 a month and add it to the minimum payment on the next lowest debt.

4.) Once the next debt is paid off, take that payment and the first payment, and combine those as an additional payment on the next lowest debt.

5.) Rinse and repeat until you are debt-free.

As I mentioned above, you can learn about this in detail in Dave’s book, The Total Money Makeover.  I highly recommend it as a way to get control of your finances.

How to reduce your cost of living

Meanwhile, as you are digging your way out of debt, why not take a look at the secondary expenses on your list?  Perhaps you could free up some more money to apply to debt by ridding yourself of some unnecessary expenses.

In her article Personal Austerity: 12 Ways to Radically Cut Expenses, Daisy Luther wrote about seeing the writing on the wall when her company began to downsize. She moved to a cheaper house, got a cheaper car, and dropped her family’s expenses dramatically. Sure enough, her position was cut a few months later, but because her expenses were so low, it wasn’t catastrophic as it would be for many families. Here are her suggestions for cutting your expenses.

Ask yourself these questions:

What can you change about your life?
Where can you reduce expenditures by several hundred dollars monthly?

This is the point at which most people say, “I can’t.”  Most people don’t want to move to a smaller house, get an old car, or go without premium cable.  But this is where you can truly dig in and change your life.

As I have said before, everyone’s situation is different.  You may be locked into a mortgage on a huge house in a market that won’t even cover the balance of what you owe.  It could be the same with your vehicle.  Explore all of your options, though, because paying a few thousand dollars to get out from under it could be worthwhile.

Some people may have reached the point where they must begin to default on payments. In the most dire of situations, that too must be considered.  Of course I am not recommending that you blow off your obligations, but if you do, it is a personal choice.  (However, do consider the fact that large banks get bailed out by the government, and everyday people do not.)

Before making such a serious decision, be smart about it and be sure to discover all of the potential ramifications, such as repossessions, garnishing of bank accounts, and ruined credit.

Here are some cuts to consider:

1.  Move to a smaller house.  Contrary to popular belief, no child ever died because he or she had to share a room with a sibling.

2.  Relocate to a small town.  Is it worthwhile to commute to a job in the city from a smaller, less expensive location? This can give you the added opportunity of homesteading and providing for many of your own needs.  Click HERE to read about what you need to know before making such a move.

3.  Get rid of your late model year vehicle.  Look for a decent used vehicle that you can purchase with cash.

4.  Cut back to one vehicle or even no vehicles.  Sometimes public transit and your own two feet can provide all of the transportation you really need at a fraction of the price of owning a vehicle.  This varies by location.

5.  Stop using credit cards.  This goes for any type of lending system that requires you to pay interest.  Stop accumulating debt.

6.  Don’t eat out.  Limit meals out to no more than once a month or special occasions.  Even better, don’t eat out at all.  Dining out, even at a fast food place, is at minimum 4 times more expensive than the same meal prepared from scratch at home. (And far less healthy!)

7.  Look for free or low cost entertainment.  Consider a family YMCA or community center membership instead of gymnastics clubs or private tennis lessons if you need to enroll your kids in some activities. Go hiking, have picnics, explore parks, go to the library, and find out what’s offered for free in your home town. Learn to enjoy productive hobbies like canning, carving and needlework. Switch from cable to Netflix.

8.  Use the envelope method to budget for shopping trips.  For back-to-school shopping or Christmas shopping, decide how much you want to spend.  Put that money in an envelope.  As you shop, place each receipt in the envelope.  When the money is gone, it’s gone.  If there’s something else your child desperately wants, then they need to decide what item they’d like to take back to get it.  Be firm and stick to your guns.  This has the added benefit of teaching your children to budget.

9.  Reduce your monthly payments by cutting things like cable, cell phones, home phones, and/or gym memberships.  Look at every single monthly payment that comes out of your bank account and slash relentlessly.

10.  Shop using the stockpile method.  Shop only the sales and simply replenish your stockpile. Keep shelf-stable food on hand for unexpected financial crunches.

11.  Eat leftovers.  Have you ever stopped to think about how much food you throw out every month?  You can often provide a few “freebies” every month by carefully repurposing your leftovers.

12.  Stay home.  By spending more time at home, you will spend less money.  You won’t be grabbing a bottle of water, going through drive-thru for lunch or putting fuel in the car.  Learn to treasure you time at home with loved ones – it’s worth more than money.

This is not a comprehensive list – when you look at your personal expenditures,  other ideas will present themselves.

If you are being completely honest with yourself, what expenses could you cut? Just imagine the difference if you moved all of that money into reducing your debt.

Now, don’t get into this situation again

Once you have paid off your debt, it’s all too easy to get yourself into trouble again. For one thing, your credit score will improve dramatically, and those tempting offers will come rolling in.

Instead of buying things on credit, put away the monthly payment you would use to pay off your debt for those items (which will include interest) and sock that money away. Make it a personal rule to pay cash for everything. Squelch your desire for instant gratification and channel it into a desire to be debt-free instead.

Exceptions to the rule

As with most rules, there are a couple of exceptions.

Most of us do not have the wherewithal to buy property using 100% cash. Property can be a good investment, and often the payments are lower than rent.  You might even be lucky enough to purchase property with very little cash.

Even if you need to take on mortgage debt, property can be a good investment, and often the payments are lower than rent.  That means that if you find a great deal on real estate, this would be a reasonable exception to debt-free living. Of course, you should also be certain to pay it off as quickly as possible!

Another exception in certain situations is an automotive loan, but this is not a valid exception in all cases. If you live near work and school, and other transportation is available, you don’t have to have an expensive new vehicle. On the other hand, if you are a commuter and the primary breadwinner, a reliable vehicle is very important to have.

Weigh the pros and cons carefully before going into debt for transportation, and realize that in some cases it is worthwhile. Again, pay the loan off as soon as you can, to reduce the amount of interest you pay and to relieve you from having that debt hanging over your head.

The Final Word

Debt-free living can change your life. I know because I have been debt-free for over twenty years.  It is what I imagine it is like to get out of prison. Debt freedom, as I like to call it.

Instead of sticking your head in the sand or feeling stressed every time you check your bank account, by working toward becoming debt-free, you can begin to save money for a rainy day.  By living frugally, purchasing things only when they are within your means, and turning your back on debt, you will create a peace of mind that no brand new “whatchamacallit” purchased on credit can ever match.

This is the year to embrace frugality, one step at a time.  Let working toward becoming debt-free be the very first step.

Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

Tiny home

When I was a little girl, my dad had converted our single car wide garage in our home into a dining room on one end and my bedroom on the other end. He built in a small closet, I remember taking everything out of the closet and pretending that space was my home, my hideaway. I would climb into the top shelf of the closet, that was the best spot, it felt safe and it was all mine.

I get that same feeling when I look at these tiny homes, of course they have lots more room than my little closet, but the sentiment is the same, it’s safe and it’s yours.

This tiny home is a real custom job, created over a period of years using about 80% recycled, repurposed material, working on weekends and summers, Ian and Jessie put together a really interesting home. I love the kitchen since they used full sized equipment, I could really cook there.

The one place where they deviated from most tiny homes is the toilet, many prefer using composting toilets, theirs is a plumbed flush toilet, I suppose you have to draw the line somewhere, and that was their line (grin).

I like the use of windows, light and the high ceiling to give the feel of more space than is actually there. Watch the video and enjoy this tiny home.
