As we look at Plain Living in this series, I want to take a moment and explore a few of the ways Mennonite households keep spending down. Some of them have been explored in other posts, but I wanted to gather them together into one post.
First things first, Casa de Chaos will need a new roof and some minor electrical and plumbing work. If I sell the house or Mom and I need to stay here longer we will need a good solid roof over our heads. Luckily Nampa City has a 0-3% loan/grant program for those type of repairs and the loan might be deferred until the home is sold. I talked to the city today and it looks good for me as a candidate for a loan. I seem a bit unusual in that I have a good credit rating even though I don’t have a lot of income. Thank goodness I did not over mortgage myself when I bought this house and when I refi-ed the house I just wanted a lower payment and interest rate. If I get approved for the loan the little house should be in great shape to live in or sell in the next year or two.
I will buy a rigid panel, 6×8 greenhouse at Harbor Freight. The greenhouse can be moved to the new place but it will useful here at Casa de Chaos extending the growing season. The last couple of years I have been a bit late on getting the garden plants started so I end up playing catch up and then getting overwhelmed at harvest time. For a house in the city, this place does have a good set up of fruit and nut trees, grape vines and several different micro-climate garden beds that do a good job supplementing the food budget/pantry.
I have seen a few Owyhee county small acreages in the $70,000-$100,000 range that might work out for mom and I. Both of us need a place around $80,000 so we can put a 20% down payment to avoid paying mortgage insurance. We also will need to have some cash on hand to buy a couple of used ATVs and pickup trucks for work/farm vehicles. I have a good set of tools for working the soil here in town but I remember digging post holes for a small horse corral via a post hole digger because the hardpan broke most augers. I was a lot younger and physically healthy at the time. I sure can’t do that sort of physical work now! I have aged a bit and I like to think I have learned to work smarter rather than harder, plus I cheat a lot to save my physical energy.
So far what I have come up with as a plan of attack is:
- Get a low interest loan or grant via the city of Nampa and fix up my house for the future and or selling it for enough money to pay off the mortgage and have money for a 20% down payment plus a buffer of few grand for any emergencies that will arise.
- Buy a used ATV and small pickup for working any future farmland/homestead.
- Start checking out properties in Owyhee County and touch base with some of the people we know that remember Mom and are willing to give us a head’s up on any good deals.
- Buy a Cistern we can use at my place or move to the new homestead that will hold rain water as a backup to the city water system or well.
- If possible start inviting like-minded preppers/starting homesteaders along with working with the local FFA and 4-H groups or trading/renting a bit of land for the physical work we can’t do daily. It can be terrifying to strike out and become a homesteader and it is not the thing for everyone. Perhaps renting a bit of land with someone you trust might be a good way to get your feet wet on homesteading. Without completely pulling up stakes and moving before you are ready to make that sort of commitment.
The plans are still very preliminary but when I set a goal I tend to make it happen eventually. I only dread draining my water barrels if I have move.
I went to the presentation given by David Holladay with only mild curiosity. I figured it would be a pleasant way to spend an evening. An enjoyable end to an enjoyable day. Little did I know that it would be the start of an epic adventure.
And as you might be thinking, yes, David is a direct descendent of the famous Doc Holliday. And the modern day Dave is just about as big a character as his famous forefather.
I was attending a primitive skills gathering and the announcement said the presentation would be at “dark 30.”
Someone had rigged up a small generator-powered projector and used the broadside of a white canvas tent for the screen. We sat in a semicircle in the dirt and the stars above peeked in to watch the show too.
David is one of the world’s leading educators in Stone Age living skills. Hollywood producers have been known to consult with him for his expertise on movies such as “Castaway.” The History Channel picked him up and featured him on their show No Man’s Land. And he has been featured in numerous articles and magazines. But for most of Dave’s life, he has lived in wilderness areas and made a living by leading people on adventures in terrain they would otherwise never see.
In this evening’s presentation, Dave was going to share some of his experiences visiting with the Tarahumara Indians of northern Mexico. The Tarahumara Indians are one of the few remaining indigenous groups that still live wild in North America. They are known for their incredible athleticism, health, and longevity. The Tarahumaran Indians live tucked far away from civilization in the unbelievably rugged terrain of the Copper Canyon.
Several decades ago, while visiting his mom in his hometown of Tucson, Arizona, Dave saw a photo in the local newspaper of two Tarahumara girls who were grinning from ear to ear. Through a series of coincidences he got to meet the girls and when he asked them why they were smiling so much they said, “Because we have eaten today.” Dave befriended them, and their families invited him to come visit their homes in the Copper Canyons of Mexico.
Dave thrives in rugged terrain and took the Tarahumara up on their welcome and he has been going back every year since.
The Tarahumara Indians lived in intentional seclusion and obscurity until the world discovered that they were the fastest ultramarathon runners on the planet. Their incredible feats of athleticism, longevity, and health have been highly acclaimed in books such as the New York Times bestseller Born To Run by Christopher McDougall. The healthy diet of the Tarahumara became a prescription for curing diabetes as outlined by Dr. Daphne Miller, Ph.D., in her book The Jungle Effect.
I loved both books and figured this presentation would be fun to see what the Tarahumara were really like from a first hand account.
As the presentation started, I leaned back on my elbows in pleasant contentment. I could almost doze with the crackling warmth of the big campfire at my back.
But not too long into his presentation, Dave said something that had me sitting bolt upright. He said:
The Tarahumara say they are the fastest runners in the world because they grow their own food. They say that the masa from the stores doesn’t fuel them like their own homegrown corn. Their food is grown on land that their families have been tending for centuries. Their seeds are blessed by their community, and every stage of the growing, harvesting, and preparing of the food is tended with love by themselves and their family. There is an energy and strength to their food that cannot be matched.
I have been working on a project exploring how the next cutting edge for ultra athletes will be growing their own food. I said to myself, “Wow, I’ve got to go meet these people and verify this.”
So seven months later, after many preparations and logistics, I found myself hugging my husband goodbye at the airport.
Our tiny group would just be the [Grow] Network’s brave video producer, Anthony Tamayo, and me. I had tried to interest others into joining this expedition. I contacted numerous ultra athletes, paleo nutrition experts, and longevity researchers. All of them were initially very excited and wanted to go.
“Oh Marjory, this trip will be incredible, let me clear my calendar!” was the typical response.
Then I contacted Josué Stephens who is an organizer for extreme endurance races in the Tarahumara region. Josué told me that he would not be going back to the Copper Canyon anytime soon. When I asked him why, he sent me this link to an article just published by the New York Times In Mexico; An Extreme Race In Extreme Danger. The article outlined how the violence in the region had become hyperactive and people were being found with their heads cut off.
“But Josué,” I said, “you run your race course right through marijuana and poppy fields.” That seemed pretty dumb to me. But nonetheless Josué was not going to join me in this Copper Canyon trip.
And as soon as everyone else saw the NY Times article they all dropped off too.
My husband was really worried too, but after almost 19 years of marriage he knows better than to try and stop his wife when she decides something is important. The night before my departure, he had gone over all the maps of the area and asked me again, “So exactly where are you going and what is your itinerary?”
“I don’t know, Hon,” I said, “all I know is that David Holladay will try to meet us at the train station in Creel, and if he’s not there we should book a room at Margarita’s Hotel and wait for him until he arrives.”
The plan was that David would get to the region a few days ahead of us to scout out some of the backcountry areas to see who was home, who wasn’t, and who would be open to visitors. There are very few telecommunications in the region. We wouldn’t know exactly where we were going until we got there. And even then we might not know. Would the buses run on schedule? There had been a lot of rain recently, would the roads be open? Would the Tarahumara even be home – or had the violence driven them deeper into the canyons? It is just not one of those trips you could plan.
I gave my husband the names of a couple of small towns that we might be in or near; Creel for certain, Samachique as a possibility, and maybe Batopilas. He grumbled unhappily with this meager amount of information and said, “at least I’ll have a starting point to send the mercenaries to look for you.”
At the departure curbside he reminded me again that we have two kids. Then he held me close and kissed me deeply.
That kiss almost undid me.
I have a loving family, a beautiful home, and deeply meaningful work. Why was I going on this trip again?
“I’ll be back,” I said into his shirt with more confidence than I actually felt at that moment. I reluctantly left his embrace. I was already way past committed. So I commanded my buckling legs to get going, and I pushed the cart loaded with overstuffed duffel bags toward the airline counter.
Thus began a long grueling day of airports and changing flights, immigration and customs, and of course delays when we got to Mexico City.
Note to self: Never, never, never fly through Mexico City’s terminal 2 ever again in my life. It is the most dysfunctional, disorganized, and ridiculous way of getting passengers onto planes that I have ever experienced.
And this was simply the beginning of the hard travelling that would get us to the more difficult part.
Our first transit stop, we got into Los Mochis, Mexico pretty late in the night. The hotel was fairly decent and there isn’t much to remark about the experience except for one thing that would cause me some real embarrassment in the next few days…

becoming self-reliant and self-aware.
What do I mean by self-aware and self-reliant? Being self-aware is knowing about your needs, controlling your desires, learning your strengths, weaknesses and knowing how to better your life and yourself. Now self-reliance is a great by product of self-awareness. Being self-reliant takes extreme discipline which is created bydeveloping self-awareness. The discipline needed to be self-reliant takes time and it takes sacrifice.
Self-reliance is not just growing your food, making your own systems, or generating your own income, it is all those and then more. Reliance on the social system to drive your desires, thoughts, purchases, attitude and personality are all systemic problems that affect almost all of us to some extent. If we are to be truly self-reliant we need to be aware of when we are allowing the social system to control our actions and thoughts, and we need to work on our self-awareness to break free.
Join me on Saturday as I discuss the process of breaking free and starting on the road to true personal freedom! If you are trying to control your life and become self-reliant, this is a must listen show for you!
Pastor Cooley gives some example from the Bible on how to make it through traumatic times.
See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil.
After many years of praying and searching for a pastor that understands America’s social, economic, and political problems and how evicting God from our country has brought those problems about, my wife and I finally found Pastor Cooley, a true man of God and a dedicated patriot.
While attending Pastor Cooley’s church for several weeks, the thought struck me; how many other faithful patriot preppers out there are having trouble finding a good church and are enduring feel-good, cotton-candy sermons just so they can be in fellowship with other believers?
In an effort to help redeem the time in these evil days, Faith and Freedom Fridays, is available as a podcast to stream or download featuring recent messages from Pastor Clifton Cooley of Calvary Baptist Church, Sebastian, FL.
If you happen to be in the Sebastian, FL area, please come worship with us every Sunday at 11:00 AM and Wednesday nights at 7:00 PM 123 Thunderbird Drive, Sebastian, Florida 32958

Though I plan to get a podcast out in the near future regarding OTP (One Time Pads), I thought it would be great to get this PDF from Dirk Rijmenants out there to those that don’t know what an OTP is or how OTPs work.
I find OTP’s incredibly useful, especially in the world of simplified communications. What if I was stuck with a flip phone and wanted to securely communicate a short message with someone via SMS? Using an OTP, one could easily encrypt a message of a few words, use the key pad to create an SMS message, then the receiver could likewise decipher the message.
More on this to come, but be sure to check out Dirk’s PDF linked at the top of this post.

One of the first things you learn at bee school is the honey bee’s life cycle. Now, I’ll admit I was slightly bored by the teacher’s presentation on this topic. And since I was still a little squeamish about bees, I was kinda grossed out too. I’ll be honest with you, at the time, I wondered Why the heck do I need to know this?
Having a grasp on the honey bee’s life cycle is important when you’re performing a hive inspection. When you’re checking on the health of your hive, you need to know what you’re looking at. You’ll want to be able to locate, identify and understand the various life stages of the bees in your hive. That’s where bee biology comes into play.
3 Types of Bees
A bee colony is made up of three types of bees: the Queen, drones and worker bees. The queen bee’s job is to lay eggs and she is the only bee in the hive that performs this job. Drones are male bees and their sole job is to mate with Queen bees. Worker bees are female and they definitely live up to the term “busy bee”. Worker bees tend to the queen, take care of baby bees, build comb, store food, defend the hive and forage for pollen and nectar.
The Honey Bee’s Life Cycle
There are 4 stages in a honey bee’s life—egg, larva, pupa and adult. It takes 21 days for the bee to develop from an egg to an adult.
Here’s the timetable:
Day 1: The queen lays an egg in an empty honeycomb cell.
Day 4: The egg hatches into a white, legless larva. Over the next three days, the worker bees feed the larva a protein-rich, white milky fluid (called royal jelly) that is produced from the glands in their heads. After that, the larvae diet is beebread only, a mixture of honey and pollen prepared by worker bees. When the curled-up larva is fully-grown (Time varies depending on whether the bee is to become a worker, drone or queen but is approximately 9 days after hatching.) the worker bees cap the cell with a porous covering of wax and pollen. The larva then starts to change into a pupa.
Day 10: The larva then starts to change into a pupa. It grows legs, sprouts wings, develops eyes, antennae and stripes.
Day 21: The fully formed honey bee bites it’s way through the cell capping and emerges.
This video shot by photographer, Anand Varma shows the first 21 days from egg to fully formed honey bee:
For the next 21 days, the new bee will remain in the hive performing duties required of a house bee. Young adult workers cleans cells and warm the brood nest and feed royal jelly to larvae. Slightly older worker bees produce wax and constructs comb and the oldest worker bees guard the hive entrance and ventilate the hive.
On the 22nd day after emerging, worker bees leave the hive to collect nectar and pollen.
Are You Still With Me?
OK, so I know that’s not the most glamorous thing to learn about but it’s super important. Commit it to memory or pin this post for future reference. I promise you’ll need to know it.

All the way from a remote mountaintop 6 miles from Crawford CO, Jeneve Rose Mitchell didn’t think she was ready to take her small-town voice to the biggest of stages, but the final season of “American Idol”has made the 15-year-old a national face.
Jeneve has lived for the past eight years in a straw bale home with no running water or electricity.
“We can’t get power lines up there,” she tells the TV audience, “so we use kerosene lanterns. Twice a week, during ‘American Idol’ season, we turn on a generator to get the TV going.”
Jeneve’s quiet corner of elk wilderness where she spends much of her free time training horses and playing music, is “definitely lonely sometimes,” she admits.
“Me and my mom and my dad pretty much fend for ourselves on our ranch. Sometimes we go (back)packing. We are big campers.”
Her mother, Jenny, is a heath care provider and operates a local family clinic. Jeneve’s father — who also serves as her vocal coach — is a carpenter. He built the family’s home by hand using straw bales and mud from the mountainside.
With a cello draped across her body — you’ll have to see it to believe it — Mitchell stood out in a crowd of nearly 10,000 this fall in Denver and was selected to play in front of “American Idol” judges Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr.
Not only did Mitchell secure a spot in front of the trio of musical stars, she’s also likely to appear in the premiere episode of the 15th and final season of “American Idol” airing Wednesday, Jan. 6, on Fox. The second night of the premiere airs on Thursday, Jan. 7.
In advance of the premiere, Mitchell spoke in a telephone interview about her decision to audition for the show, her musical background in Crawford and the rather unorthodox way she grew up watching “American Idol.”
Melinda Mawdsley: Thank you so much for your time. This is the final season of “American Idol.” I’m guessing that helped push you into an audition.
Jeneve Rose Mitchell: Yeah. I’ve always wanted to try out for “American Idol” but was going to when I was older and more polished, but since this was the last season, I decided to just go for it. I pretty much grew up watching “American Idol.” We turned on the generator up here just to watch “American Idol.” Otherwise, we don’t have power up here.
Mawdsley: Um, what? Where do you live?
Mitchell: I was born in Las Vegas and lived there until I was 7. My parents bought a bunch of property on a mountain near Crawford five years before I was born. My dad grew up near here. When I was 7 we moved here. When we moved here my mom had my dad build her a clinic.
Mawdsley: Is your mom in health care?
Mitchell: Yes, a primary care provider (at Needlerock Family Health Clinic.) There’s a lot of ranches around here and people get hurt a lot. (Jeneve Rose’s mother Jenny Mitchell is a family nurse practitioner and was nominated for the National Rural Health Practitioner of the year award in 2011, according to needlerockfamily.com.)
Mawdsley: Does your family ranch, too?
Mitchell: We have a ranch thing going on, mainly horse training.
Mawdsley: So you grew up singing around Crawford?
Mitchell: I got gigs around like at festivals or birthday parties, but nothing big at all. I was trying to advance in my career so I did some performances for my mom’s health clinic and did benefit concerts and raised about $15,000 for my mom’s health clinic.
Mawdsley: But you’ve never auditioned in front of a national audience before?
Mitchell: This is the first time I’ve ever done anything like this.
Mawdsley: Tell me more about the audition process. How many stages did you have to go to before appearing before the three judges?
Mitchell: Some people go through a cattle call, which is a couple months before you actually go to see the judges. Some people have their first audition through Skype or video. I did the cattle call. I went to a giant place and played for people one by one in Denver. That was July, maybe. I had to go through about four auditions in the cattle call spread out over two days. I sang different songs each time, but that was not required. I thought if the producers heard a couple different songs they would think that was cool.
Mawdsley: What did you sing?
Mitchell: For the first couple of auditions I sang “Chainsaw” by the The Band Perry. Then I sang “Boondocks” by Little Big Town.
Mawdsley: So you’re a country singer.
Mitchell: Yeah, but I change up my style a lot. … I was playing in front of producers, and they decided right there whether I was going to go on and see the judges. One of the producers said, “You are going to see the three famous judges.” I knew that it was going to go well, but I was just excited to be there.
Mawdsley: When did you audition before the judges?
Mitchell: It was in Denver in September.
Mawdsley: Obviously, people want to know, how were the judges?
Mitchell: Before I went to see the judges, I was really nervous. As I walked in there, they really were nice and they greeted me with a smile as I stepped in front of them and were really welcoming. They had a lot of good critiques, and I feel like they improved my musicianship just by going in front of them.
Mawdsley: Obviously, you can’t go into much detail about how the audition went, but how long were you in front of them?
Mitchell: I was in front of them, it felt like a long time. I actually did about three quarters of a song and three quarters of another song.
Mawdsley: How many times did you rehearse in front of the mirror before that audition?
Mitchell: I don’t really rehearse in front of the mirror, but I do a lot of practicing every day. I just practice at home. My dad is my vocal coach. I taught myself all the instruments I’ve learned. The more time I spend with them, the better I get.
Mawdsley: What do you play?
Mitchell: I play the strings: string bass, violin, cello, banjo, guitar and harp.
Mawdsley: You taught yourself all those instruments? Did you take one with you?
Mitchell: Yes. I took the cello to my audition. It was a blast. My dad made a strap so I can wear the cello like a guitar with a technique called chopping. It’s really groovy. It’s really hard to explain.
Mawdsley: I bet the judges hadn’t seen that before. Did you do special things with your voice in preparation, like really avoid sick people? Drink lots of water? Stop talking?
Mitchell: My voice, and I don’t know why, doesn’t tire out as easy as other people’s voices I see. Instead of stop talking, I try to talk smoothly. I drink lots of water, tea, chew on ginger. I really just tried to be routine, do warm-ups all the time, as much as I could. That’s pretty much it.
Mawdsley: Through all those years of firing up the generator to watch “American Idol” what stands out to you about the show? Why do you love it?
Mitchell: I really love that the judges in the past have always tried to support the contestants as much as they could and help them grow. People who have no background (in performance) but have a talent can have a chance to show it.
“If a small magnifying glass will burn things with sunlight, how much power could you get from a lens as big as you?” So begins the following video. Right now people all over the country are getting flat screen TVs and selling their old rear projection TVs. Many […]
As you probably know, there was a lot of speculation about some sort of economic crash in the fall of 2015. Jonathan Kahn’s Harbinger (based on his application of the shemitah to our day and age) got a lot of attention. I watched his video and listened to a couple interviews. It did not resonate with me. I made a conscious decision not to have anything to do with it on this blog.
I’ve bought into the prognostications of financial pseudo-prophets in the past, and their predictions did not pan out. I’m wary of anyone who, under the cloak of Christianity, predicts a date for collapse. When they are wrong (and they have always been wrong as far as I know), they make Christians look like crazy Chicken Littles.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure the financial system that we all labour under will eventually fail, just like my submersible well pump failed back in November. There were little indications that something was wrong, then, one day, the electric breaker tripped. Upon closer inspection, the pump was just no good. Everything has a lifespan, including economic systems.
Little indications of impending economic failure are in the news every day. There is no fixing it. The system will just have to die, and then it will be replaced. This is widely understood in economic circles. It is the historical pattern.
When I listen to the analysis of various alternative economic commentators, none of them seems to know for sure what the next economic system will look like. Many are fond of returning to a gold-backed system of some sort. I happen to like that idea, but I have a feeling it isn’t going to happen.
Instead, I’m persuaded that there is a whole new economic system that is being prepared. The groundwork is pretty much already in place. This system would not be acceptable to people today, with our economy still holding together, but a large enough crisis will change people’s minds.
This new economic system is called technocracy. It is a revolutionary carbon-debit economic system that was developed in the 1920s. You can learn about it from This Online Article.
The technology for implementing such an economic system was not available in the 1920’s. But with today’s advanced computers the whole concept is entirely doable.
All of this is explained in the book, Technocracy Rising: The Trojan Horse Of Global Transformation by Patrick Wood (who also authored the above-linked article).
Patrick Wood has done a remarkable job of “connecting the dots” and showing that the world has been moving towards economic and political technocracy for the past few decades. This is all happening in real time, by design.
Here’s what he writes in the book about the technocratic economic system that is in the works…
“Technocracy is so radically different from all current economic norms that it will stretch your mind to get a grasp of what it actually means and what it implies for a global society.”
If you have any interest in the economy and where it is headed, I think Technocracy Rising will really open your eyes to probabilities that almost no one is talking about. The book was, without a doubt, the most interesting book I read in 2015.
In 2011, Sylvain Tesson left his home in Paris for a 6 month stay, on his own, on the edge of Lake Baikal. He stayed in an old geologist’s hut that was heated by a cast-iron stove and attempted to lead a “simple life and claim back time”.
Lake Baikal in Siberia is the largest freshwater lake by volume in the world and contains nearly 20% of the world’s unfrozen surface freshwater. The lake is a Unesco World Heritage Site and is 395 miles long, 49 miles wide, 1,642m (just over a mile) deep, and 25 million years old. In fact, the lake is so huge that the surface area is as large as Belgium and, at normal walking speed, it would take you 4 months to walk all the way around it.
Off-grid living has the potential to become one of the most amazing experiences or life changing moments in one’s existence. However, if the destination is Lake Baikal, the chips are stacked against you. It is not the extreme environment or the wild and fierce creatures lurking in the dense wood that you will succumb to. It will be the extreme solitude, isolation and loneliness. One must mentally prepare for the marked change from the abundance of faces around you in the city, to the only face for miles and miles is that of your own reflection in the shimmering water.
http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2013/may/31/siberia-cabin-lake-baikal-russia. He was driven there by truck in February when the temperature was -30 degrees Celsius and the ice was a metre thick. It was a 6 day walk to the nearest village and a day’s walk to the nearest neighbour. His equipment included: “an axe and cleaver, fishing poles, kerosene lamp, ice drill, saw, snowshoes, tent, liquor glasses and vodka, cigars, provisions (pasta, rice, Tabasco sauce, coffee) and a library of almost 80 books”. Although his time in the Taiga was an experiment and not a complete emigration, Tesson still needed to account for and appreciate the enormity of the solitude he was facing out there.
“Cabin Fever” is an expression for a reason. Cooped up, alone in a hut for days on end can send someone into a spiral of depression. Tessson said that the pain derives from, “the sorrow of not sharing with a loved one the beauty of lived moments” and also “what others miss out on by not being with the person who experiences it”. Routine and remaining occupied are two ways to combat loneliness.
Tesson was warned prior to leaving Paris that boredom would become his worst enemy. He therefore decided to immerse himself in literature. With a library around him, he suddenly had an abundance of friends and stories to be listened to. His collection extended from philosophy and poetry, through to nature books, non-fiction and fiction. DH Lawrence would stir his senses. Nietzche and Schopenhauer would keep his mind active and Daniel Defoe was there for his unparalleled story-telling ability.
Tesson claims, the slowing down of time and the deathly quiet of his home allowed him to read sometimes for 8 hours straight and with the two luxuries he allowed himself (vodka and cigars), this sounds like an idyllic setting.
Daily routine meant that Sylvain didn’t have prolonged periods of time where he was left completely with his thoughts and a hundred yard stare. He divided his day in to two sections. Mornings were spent reading, writing, learning poetry, smoking and contemplating. The afternoon provided exercise. Fishing, running and chopping firewood would be the order of the day leading up to sunset. Ice skating on the lake was cited by Tesson as a particular highlight and also camping and hiking up in the titanic mountains that his cabin backed on to. Sylvain said that the way to stay sane is to go about your day the same as if you were surrounded by people in a city. Surprisingly, Tesson found enjoyment in the knowledge of what tomorrow would bring. The possibility of the unknown is exciting but it is also heart-warming to know that the next day will be filled with the same peace as today.
What is most interesting about Sylvain Tesson’s time spent at Lake Baikal, is the impression it left within him and what living off-grid did for him upon his return to civilisation. In contrast to the thought, “happiness is only real when shared”, Tesson believed that, “the only way to be free is to be alone”. The moment another person is added into the equation there is a danger of “coercion, compromise [and] imprisonment”. It is a hard life out in the Taiga, it will age you rapidly, but you are free and alive, not “languish[ing] in the city”.
Tesson, saw his 6 month excursion as a revolt. He paid no tax, owed nothing to any form of government, had no communication with home and paid no bills. Having no income affects the government; they gain nothing from you. This “should be the objective of true revolutionaries”, to become exempt from societal boundaries and forge a new way of life.
Upon returning home, Tesson argued that silence is “rejuvenating”. It made him appreciate the time he has within his day and how to use it wisely rather than rush about inefficiently. Loss of freedom begins the moment you can be contacted or looked up at the touch of a button. Tesson says, “throw out your mobile phone…take to the woods! Consolation awaits you there”.
Further information on journeying to Lake Baikal can be found in Peter Thomson book Sacred Sea: A Journey to Lake Baikal.
The economy could be on much shakier ground than you think, and the stock market may be only the latest indication.
With the Dow Jones falling 392 points Thursday and 252 points Wednesday, there are a number of indications that 2016 could see an economic meltdown much like the one in 2008. In fact, this year is off to the worst four-day start — down 910 points — on the stock market ever.
Here are five very good reasons why the present state of the economy should frighten you:
1. The Chinese stock market is collapsing — and it could bring down our stock market with it. Trading on the Shanghai stock exchange was halted on January 7 after the Shanghai Composite Index (China’s Dow Jones) lost 7 percent of its value in just 29 minutes of trading, The Wall Street Journal reported. Officials stop trading to prevent panic and a stock market crash.
“This is insane,” Chen Gang, the chief investment officer at an asset management company in Shanghai, told Bloomberg. “We were forced to liquidate all our holdings this morning.”
The plunge in Shanghai caused US markets to fall as well. Other markets, including Japan’s Nikkei, also fell.
Manufacturing in China is down, and the country’s government has been trying to stimulate economic growth with massive amounts of stimulus money.
2. One of the world’s most successful investors, billionaire George Soros, thinks such a crisis has already begun. Soros told conference goers in Sri Lanka that he believes China’s currency, the Yuan, is about to collapse and bring the markets down with it.
“China has a major adjustment problem,” Soros said. “I would say it amounts to a crisis. When I look at the financial markets, there is a serious challenge which reminds me of the crisis we had in 2008.”
Soros previously has successfully predicted such collapses. In 1992, he correctly predicted that Britain was about to devalue the pound, and he made $1 billion betting against it.
3. The price of oil is collapsing and causing serious damage to the economy around the world. The cost of a barrel has fallen by half since June 2014. On January 7, oil prices had dropped to around $32 a barrel, the lowest in 12 years. Around 200,000 oil industry workers in the US have already lost their jobs, according to The New York Times.
Cheap oil is wreaking havoc elsewhere, including in Alaska, where the state government has seen its revenues fall by 81 percent since 2012, the Empresa-Journal reported. The state’s governor is so desperate for money he’s even proposed bringing back the income tax, which Alaska abolished 35 years ago.
Saudi Arabia has had to cut government spending and raise the price of utilities and gasoline to cover an $87 billion budget deficit.
4. Several top economists interviewed by Politico think that the economy will tank in 2016. Tyler Cowen, a professor of economics at George Mason University, believes we are facing “what could be the beginnings of a major global recession.”
“The next president will inherit an economy teetering on the edge of recession,” former Labor Secretary Robert Reich told Politico. Reich thinks the economy is in trouble because people simply don’t have enough money to pay for all the goods and services being produced.
“American consumers account for almost 70 percent of economic activity, but they won’t have enough purchasing power in 2016 to keep the economy going on more than two cylinders,” Reich said. He noted that the average wage in the United States is now four percent lower than it was in 2000.
5. The retail apocalypse is heating up. Major retailers are closing hundreds of stores and laying off thousands of workers. After lousy sales over Christmas, Macy’s announced plans to eliminate 4,800 jobs and shut down 36 to 40 stores.
It is not just Macy’s. JC Penney is planning to close 39 stores and lay off 2,250 workers, CBS Money Watch reported. Sears has closed around 235 stores in the past year, and some observers predict that chain could go out of business completely in 2016.

Recently I received a pair of Timberland Whiteledge hiking boots from James Menta of SoleLabz.com who asked me to do a review of these Timberland hiking boots. When I got the boots several weeks ago, I decided to wear them for a couple of days to see how they felt. Well I found them to be so comfortable that I am still wearing them every day. I like them.
First a bit of information on Timberland
Timberland is an American company that is headquartered in Stratham, New Hampshire, but they have offices all around the world. While they are an American company, the boots that they sent me were manufactured in China.
The term “Timberland” was firstly introduced in 1973 as a name of a specific innovative model. It featured their revolutionary (at the time) injection-molding tech, allowing for a stitching-free sole upper. This made the boot completely waterproof and left room for changes depending on the designated climate.
Here’s what Timberland had to say about these waterproof boots
Timberland recommends this boot for occasional hikers.
The body of the boot is full-leather, meaning it’ll provide optimal water-resistance. It’ll take some time to break in, and the flexibility won’t be its main asset. On the other hand, leather offers sturdier construction and increased durability as well as high abrasion-resistance.
Since the major part of the upper is one big piece of leather, there’s no need for side seams, which increases performance in the water-resistance department. They’re lightweight considering the chosen material.
As Timberland boasts, the feature that defines Timberland White Ledge is the thick padding around the ankles provided by the upper tongue and collar. It is supposed to provide better ankle stability, which is especially important for beginner hikers.
This level of cushioning also adds to the overall comfort of the boot. The sole is made of rubber and connected to the upper without any stitching.
They feature a well-known Timberland’s signature mark, there oiled leather, so don’t be alarmed by sporadic scuff marks on this boot.
OK, so that’s what Timberland claims, now here is what I think.
The boots are very comfortable and with all the rainy weather, we are having they have proved to be waterproof. Because I pronate rather badly I am really hard on shoes and boots. I will destroy cheap tennis shoes in several weeks. So far these boots are showing no signs of damage and I think they will hold up well.
With all the rain and leaves on the ground, many of the surfaces around here are slippery. The tread on these boots seems to grip well. These are comfortable boots that look good, so I can wear them most of time. In an emergency in which I had to walk a considerable distance to get home, I think these boots would do the job. Even thought they are made in China as almost everything else is these days, I would recommend the Timberland hiking boots.
Preppers are huge DIY fans. Most of us are prepping for disaster on a shoestring budget and diligently adding to our survival stockpiles in an organized and money-conscious manner. Some self-reliance and self-defense items simply have to be purchased commercially, like my favorite rifle, surprisingly delicious long-term storage food, and advanced first aid supplies. However, a multitude of cheap survival DIY must-haves do exist.
There is no better time to review your prepping plan than at the beginning of a new year. This year, like all years, is 52 weeks long. Factoring a DIY prepping project into each weekend spaces out the nominal cost and still allows for plenty of time for other weekend survival and family recreational activities.
If you have already accomplished one of the DIY preparedness tips on the list, share your experience and add tips for other simple SHTF projects with Survival Based readers in the comments section below!
Make Biodiesel Fuel in a Bucket
Fuel will be one of the first items to disappear during a long-term disaster. If the SHTF scenario involves a power grid down situation, semi trucks will not be able to deliver fuel and the full pumps at the corner gas station will no longer work.
• 32 ounces vegetable oil – corn oil, canola oil, and soybean oil seem to work the best when making biodiesel fuel
• 27 ounces methanol
• ½ ounce sodium hydroxide lye
• Protective rubber gloves, safety glasses, and quality dust mask to cover the mouth
• Mason jars or other glass or plastic container with a firm-fitting lid
• Heat source such as a camp stove, charcoal grill or wood-burning stove
• Cast-iron cook pot
1. Gear up with the protective items. Do not skimp on the skin coverings. Inhaling the fumes could likely prove fatal; methanol is toxic and absorbed into the skin quickly. Making biodiesel fuel is a rather simple process, but if proper safety precautions are not adhered to and the fuel is not made in a well-ventilated area, death would be a probable.
2. Pour the oil into the cast-iron cook pot while stirring continuously.
3. Heat the oil until it reaches approximately 100 degrees.
4. While it is still hot, pour the oil into the chosen glass container.
5. Carefully pour the methanol and lye into the container and screw the lid on tightly. Do not inhale the fumes while pouring.
6. Shake the container continuously over the course of a half hour.
7. Allow the homemade biodiesel fuel time to settle as it sits in a warm spot for 48 hours. When the fuel is ready, you will be able to easily see that the ingredients in the container have separated. The fuel will be at the top of the jar and the glycerin will have settled at the bottom.
8. Store the fuel in a cool, dry place until ready for use.
Heater in a Can
This lightweight and portable heater takes up little storage space, costs virtually nothing to make, and can provide heat for warmth, cooking, or boiling water in just minutes. Make multiple can heaters and store their necessary ingredients inside for quick use; they make perfect survival gifts as well!
• 1 pint rubbing alcohol
• Empty metal can — This can be a thoroughly washed paint can, metal pail, or large coffee can.
• Firestarter – roll of toilet paper, gallon ziplock bag filled with dryer lint, found items such as dry twigs and leaves, or scrap fabric.
1. Place the firestarter inside the can.
2. Pour the bottle of rubbing alcohol on top of the toilet paper.
3. When ready to use, carefully light the alcohol with a lighter or a match. To avoid burning your arm, light a piece of paper or a stick and use it to ignite the fuel.
Make a PVC Bow
Guns and bows, and all of the supplies needed for them to function properly, are prepping staples. Our tribe (my favored term for mutual assistance group) has a variety of handguns, rifles, and plenty of ammo and reloading materials. Bows are also an emerging part of our survival self-defense plan. Making arrows to replenish their store-bought counterparts is not a difficult task, and neither is making an emergency SHTF bow from PVC pipe.
A homemade compound bow is not only excellent backup for your backup commercially made bow, but would also likely be an excellent barter item. Stockpiling barter items is an integral part of our long-range TEOTWAWKI plan, but be careful when trading or bartering any type of weapon or ammunition, and make certain that the items will not one day be used against you and your loved ones.
• 55 inches of bow string
• One 4‘ 5” long, 3/8” thick fiberglass rod
• Roll of duct tape
• Roll of electrical wrap
• One 5’ long piece of ¾-inch thick schedule 40 PVC pipe
• 12 inches of pipe insulation for the handle of the emergency bow
• Can of WD-40
• One 5’ long and ½” thick piece of schedule 40 PVC pipe
• Rough grit sandpaper
• Power drill
• 1/8” drill bit
• Metal file
• Permanent marker
• Ruler or measuring tape
• Camouflage spray paint, optional
1. Measure the diameter of the ½” thick piece of PVC pipe with the measuring tape. Mark the center point and draw a line from top to bottom with the marker.
2. Use the saw to cut along the line and split the piece of pipe in half.
3. Use the WD-40 to spray the outside of one of the pipe pieces as well as the inside of both ends of the ¾” thick piece of pipe. Save the unoiled half of pipe piece for use when making a second bow.
4. Push one piece of the ½” thick pipe into the ¾” piece of pipe. Push the pipe against the ground or something hard to accomplish this task, but take care not to push too hard and crack the pipe pieces.
5. Using the marker and measuring tape, measure ¾ ” from the end of both sides of the pipe after fully inserting the smaller pipe.
6. Drill a hole onto the marks. Make sure the hole cuts through the piece of interior pipe as well.
7. With the hacksaw, cut across the opening of the pipe on each end to create a slit for the bow string. Stop cutting just before reaching the drilled holes.
8. Use the metal file to smooth out the rough edges created from the drilling and sawing.
9. File the same spots with the sandpaper to further eradicate any rough edges.
10. Wrap the pipe insulation, fashion into a handle shape, and place onto the center of the archery bow where the hand will go.
11. Secure the pipe insulation firmly into place with the duct tape.
12. Wrap the fiberglass rod in a layer of electrical tape followed by a layer of duct tape.
13. Slide the rod into the PVC pipes to help add a bit of substance to the bow and to enhance draw weight.
Living off-grid on a 40-acre homestead is difficult enough, but doing so while juggling farm chores and a full-time, off-site job? That seems nearly impossible.
But that’s exactly what this week’s guest on Off The Grid Radio does. His name is Joseph Trumpey, and he and his wife Shelly manage an off-grid farm with a large garden and about 100 animals. Each of them also teaches – Joseph at the University of Michigan and Shelly at a local school.
It’s a challenging schedule, Joseph says, but it’s well worth it.
Joseph also tells us:
- How he finds time to do farm chores while also leaving time for his day job.
- Why he chose a straw bale home — and what unique benefits it provides.
- What he uses to power his off-grid, 2,200-square-foot house.
- Why he built his home by himself rather than having someone do the work.
- How he makes extra cash from the farm, and why he is a big supporter of grass-fed meat.
Joseph also offers tips to anyone who is wanting to balance an off-grid life with a full-time job. Don’t miss this amazing episode featuring an off-grid family that will encourage and inspire you!
As some of you may know, previous articles have talked about emergency management experts recommending that you have a three day supply of emergency essentials on hand in the event of a disaster. The recommendation comes from emergency managers at the local, state, and federal levels. We here believe that the recommendation of three days of essentials is outdated, in my opinion it needs to be raised to a more realistic level.
When someone that supposedly is an expert recommends only a three day supply, then some may assume the crisis or any crisis will be over in three days.
A three day supply is ample if a transformer blows up or if someone strikes a pole and the power is out for 24 or 48 hours, for example, but recent and not so recent events have proven that power disruptions can last for days if not weeks in some cases. We have recommended in the past that you have at least a one week supply on hand and that two weeks is ideal.
Mountain House Has Made It Simple
This is not to say that you should not have a three day supply on hand. If the power is out for a week you will be hungry for only four days instead of the entire seven, so any preparedness you do is a step in the right direction, and any supplies on hand is considered a plus.
One of the problems some face is how to determine how much and what type of emergency foods you need, and even where to buy the food, where and how to store the food, and will it last and be fresh and edible during an emergency.
There is a remedy offered by Mountain House that takes the guess work out of what to buy and how much, how to store and shelf life.
Customized meal planning, could not be any simpler, you can now purchase 2, 3, 4, and 5 day kits. This allows you to budget and build your emergency food stockpile without breaking the bank. If you buy the combination of kits at one time you have a 14 day supply, it doesn’t get any easier than that.
You do not have to buy all at once however. Pick up a 3 day kit every two weeks, or one a month, for example, and soon enough you will have your stockpile built up.
Each kit offered has an assortment of breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals. It is recommended however, that you purchase some sample packs to make sure everyone in the family finds something they enjoy.
Buying emergency foods that no one likes to eat is an added burden you don’t need during a crisis, so know what the food tastes like before stocking up.
Here is what Mountain House Has To Say:
- Every pouch in these kits has a Taste Guarantee of 12+ years, freeing you from the hassle of constant food rotation.
- Compact size! By combining all 4 kits you can easily fit 2 weeks of food in a space less than 2 feet high by 2 feet wide and 8 inches deep.
- Delicious flavor with recipes even the kids will love! Our meals are widely regarded as the best tasting emergency food meals on the market.
- Popular breakfast, lunch and dinner entrees for one person, or to be shared
- The stackable 14-day boxed kit contains a variety of popular breakfast, lunch, and dinner entrees for one person.
Note how much space is required for two weeks of food, using simple math, you could easily determine how much space you would need to store 2, 6 and 12 months of food and the food is shelf stable for 12 plus years, so no guessing whether the food is edible during an emergency.
If you have to evacuate, take the food with you. Just make sure you have the means in your kits or car to prepare the meals. You can of course break down the contents to carry in packs for hiking, camping or to have in your vehicle’s emergency kit or in your bug-out-bags.
Now you can budget and work toward your ultimate food stockpile goal. Whether it is a months’ supply, 3 months or a years’ supply, you can pace yourself by purchasing the kits as your budget allows until you reach your emergency food storage goal.
The food tastes great, and I always have a few meals in my go-bags, and several in the car, and of course, some in the pantry. I am working on building a bigger supply for the home right now. Now it is easier to store and to keep the food organized by purchasing the kits.
I had been buying individual meals here and there at various camping stores and other retail outlets and then I realized I was buying pretty much the same meals. I wasn’t keeping track, and they were scatted here and there. Now I know I can get better organized and of course you can too.

I postulate that 80% of the people here have no idea what the LNT theory says. But in a painfree way, you can get past that hump of knowledge by watching this video.
Since the last great recession of 2008, economic forecasters and preppers alike have warned of the bottom dropping out of the economy. The proverbial doom prediction of “it’s not if, but when” was used for years as a call to action to get ready for a much larger economic disaster. Well folks, it seems that history is repeating itself. This week, George Soros cautioned the public of an impending economic crisis.
Speaking at an economic forum in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, he told an audience that China is struggling to find a new growth model and its currency devaluation is transferring problems to the rest of the world, according to media. He added that a return to rising interest rates was proving difficult for the developing world.
The current environment reminded him of the “crisis we had in 2008,”The Sunday Times in Sri Lanka reported on Thursday morning. “China has a major adjustment problem,” he added, according to Bloomberg. “I would say it amounts to a crisis.”
The Reality is Stark and the Consequences are Clear
For years, Mac Slavo of SHTFPlan fervently warned his readers to stock up on physical assets and to prepare. His weekly economic posts proved of economic strife, but many believed he was all hype. It seems the day is finally here and we are looking at the possibility of this crisis being more unforgiving than its predecessor.
Mac states, “All you have to do is look around. The signs are everywhere. There is an industrial recession in China, lackluster holiday sales prove there is a consumer recession in the United States, real estate is stalled and is re-collapsing and stock markets around the world are set to buckle. If you’ve yet to prepare, the time is now because the whole thing is about to come unhinged.
What is about to occur is mirroring what happened in 2008. In fact, given the many national and world events that has plagued us in the past, it seems that this looming crisis on the horizon is the perfect storm for disaster.
Mac goes on to warn us. What to expect is to expect the unexpected because uncertainty is the name of the game. We don’t know how far markets will crash, what will happen with the U.S. dollar or what will happen with geopolitical tensions; and our way of life could change literally overnight. In the last 15 years, we’ve seen what systemic breakdown does in countries like Greece, Cyprus, Venezuela and Argentina.
The lessons learned are clear – you better have supplies on hand. In Venezuela, for example, they couldn’t even get toilet paper or condoms. In Greece, people were lining up in droves to get expired food that grocery stores were throwing away, and perhaps just as significantly, access to lifesaving medicine was lost when Greek credit markets were locked up.
The reality is stark and the consequences are clear – there will be panic, confusion and violence. Are you ready for that?
If You’ve Yet to Prepare, the Time is Now
Unlike the recession of 2008, this economic beast will not be held off. There will be extensive amounts of wealth lost leading to drastic cutbacks by consumers. Moreover, you can expect massive job loss. In 2008 and 2009, the U.S. labor market lost 8.4 million jobs, or 6.1% of all payroll employment. This was the most dramatic employment contraction (by far) of any recession since the Great Depression (Source). As well, you can anticipate food prices to increase even more than they have over the last few years. In fact, price for food has drastically risen since the last recession; and according to this chart, prices are set to steadily increase with this next crisis.
- Get prepared. At the very least, buy food, products, and supplies in bulk to help you prepare for price inflation. If you have the means to do so, invest in 30-60 days worth of supplies so that you have everything you need. Having these on hand will help you if times become more difficult. You can use this free online series to begin creating a personal step-by-step preparedness plan for your family; or, buy the best-selling book, The Prepper’s Blueprint to use as a reference in your preparations. As well, if you can manage, get out of debt, organize your finances and find ways to free up some of your income for an emergency fund to help you create a personal safety net.
- Preserve wealth. Choose hard assets (dry goods, precious metals, land, livestock, skills, etc.) for long-term investments so they will hold their intrinsic value over time. Holding these types of investments will insulate you from inflation and other economic issues. Further, tying your money up in assets will help you avoid the inflating prices of food sources in the future, thus furthering your cause of self-reliant living.
- Invest in food. One thing analysts and financial pundits agree on is that, in general, commodities will continue to rise. When others are buying foods at inflated prices, you will be consuming your investment when it was purchased at a lower price. Using a combination of shelf stable foods, you can create a well-rounded food supply to depend on when an emergency arises. Further, these foods last a lifetime and would make sound investments for future planning. Ideally, you want to store shelf-stable foods that your family normally consumes, as well as find foods that are multi-dynamic and serve many purposes. Dry goods like rice, wheat, beans, salt, honey, and dry milk will provide you with an investment that will grow in value as prices rise, and also offer you peace of mind in case the economy further degrades. This food storage calculator can show you how much food should you need to store. As well, read Emergency Items: What Will Disappear First for more ideas.
- Learn how to grow your own food. In a homestead environment, a person wants the land to work for them as much as possible. Invest in fruit trees, seeds, and garden supplies. If you really want these peak foods, find a way to grow them yourself. Further, if you live in a rural area, consider investing in trees and bushes that will lure wild game. The trees and bushes can provide you with added sustenance and help you stock meat in your freezer. Here is a how-to guide for creating a garden quickly.
- Raise your own food. Rather than paying hard-earned money at the store for eggs, poultry and dairy—raise them yourself. Chickens are very easy to care for and can provide you with meat and eggs throughout the year. Additionally, you can find substitutions for these peak foods with a little research and ingenuity. For example, rabbits would be a suitable protein replacement and can even be raised in more urban areas. Similar to chickens, they don’t require much care and with some effort can be fed from the homestead’s garden or you can grow fodder. They are also great breeders and will provide you with ample amounts of meat. These are the 10 best meat rabbit breeds. As well, for the modest price of purchasing a fishing license, you can stock your freezer with fresh-caught fish.
- It all adds up. Again, do what you can to pay off debts ahead of time and work to restructure your outgoing funds to lower your expenses as much as possible. Debt only enslaves you further, and finding ways to detach from the system will break those shackles. As well, look into finding additional income streams. The more income you can set aside, the better off you will be. That way, if your main income dries up, you have a fall back income and won’t have to go into default.
We Have a Choice
This economic crisis is projected to hit much harder than the 2008 recession and will last longer. The truth of the matter is that we stand at the brink of a precipice and the choice is yours to make: you can ignore the tell-tale signs or get ready and brace yourselves for it. It’s time to get ready because it’s about to get real.

Survival Tips from U.S. Special Forces
Three things you can learn from the U.S. Special Forces and apply in a real survival situation.
What if you knew a few things about self defense and survival, straight from the U.S. Special Forces?
It might be handy to have a few skills at your disposal, in a time of collapse or major civil unrest or lawlessness — which might be in America’s near future.
Where the Special Forces Has An Edge on You
It might be hard for some of you to admit, but odds are you don’t have the overall strength and endurance of a Special Forces soldier. But did you know you can come darn close in many ways through physically challenging fitness regimens like “Crossfit”, or others you simply push yourself to tackle?
What can you do about this? If your well in your years, and running, sprinting and vertical climbing simply are not an option for you, at the least build up your ability to hike, and to hike steep grades at long distances. Those who still have the knees, or youth on their side, should implement running short to medium distances into their fitness routine.
Strategies to Increase Fitness
As fitness improves, add-in light “dead-lift to overhead press” dumbbells (or barbell), and over the coming days and weeks gradually increase that weight. Soon quicken these movements, and you’ll use several muscle groups in one exercise. Like “jump squats”, a “Dead-lift to overhead press” is an exercise that can boost strength-gaining hormones in both men and women. Combined with your other exercises, you can make faster and bigger gains in multiple areas of strength and fitness.
HGH (human growth hormone) is said to be one of the key hormones being released by your body — even in people well past their teens. Ultimately, in a survival situation, your strength, cardio, and endurance can all be powerful survival tools, especially if it comes down to “fight or flight”.
I’m going to recommend a product, and this is one that I will say personally can do wonders for your cardio / endurance. That product is called Maca Root. I discovered it by accident (?) in recent weeks, when a celery seed extract supplement I had purchased online failed to arrive, and instead a bottle of “Maca Root” showed up by mistake. Instead of sending it back, I decided to look up “Maca Root” on the web, and found out that it’s origin is in South America, where it was reported to give “warriors” in centuries past strength and endurance in battle. I do train in combat sports (at varying times) and decided to put it to the test. It works. That’s all I’m going to say. Try it. What I found is that it’s somehow slow acting. That means if I take it on day one, it’s not until day two that I see the full effect. Somehow it works on hormones in a way that seems a lot like turning back the clock to about the age of 20 (?). Maca root is potent. It is reported to improve health in other areas as well — my interest is the fitness and strength training aspects of Maca Root. Special Forces soldiers are trained (including classroom training) in many types of scenarios they may find themselves in, whether planned or unexpected. This type of training helps soldiers learn to make calculations in their head; how to approach an area, how to exit an area, danger points and “choke points” to watch for. Also, calculations on enemy targeting; where is an enemy weak at? How can an enemy be distracted? Where would be a good place for a sniper? Where’s a secondary place, if an enemy might know how to spot and avoid likely sniper locations? Etc.
What can you do about this? Simply put, you can learn how to think strategically, and plot routes using just a pen and paper based on certain types of environments or terrain you may encounter in your region in a time of collapse. With pen and paper, and maps, this is just practice. Learn to be strategic. Take the time to think. Plan for an ambush. Calculate a way to escape and even better avoid it.
For example, if you’re likely to cross through a city or suburb, where are the most dangerous places likely to be? What would be the best time of the day to travel through that area, if there’s no other way around? How about just before dawn, when most people will be sleeping? Can you (and others with you) devise a way to distract any dangerous elements so your group can sneak past into safer territory? Plot these down on paper. What if there is a detour you can take around a danger zone / area of lawlessness? What tools will you need to get through barbed wire or chain link fencing? What tools (hint, duct tape and hammer), can you use to break glass into a building without making a lot of noise? (Layer strips of duct tape over glass, then hammer at the duct tape; the window will implode, the glass will not make a loud shatter).
If you have a small shovel, (or an improvised tool), how fast can you dig a trench and conceal yourself under dirt and brush? With practice you might be able to do this in just 3 – 5 minutes. A pursuing enemy may simply walk on by, and not realize you’re hiding just yards away (as long as they don’t have tracking dogs).

Sudden, crushing pain isn’t a pleasant place to be. But in a survival situation, you may one day be in that pain, and now you can’t simply lay down and wait for the paramedics to show up. There may not be any paramedics. That fact, combined with the sudden, crushing pain, can stop you fast in your tracks. Another fact: Fear, tears, and agonizing pain will put a lot of people down for the count.
What can you do about this? A mental commitment to ignore the pain, and a drive to “keep going” will be keys to getting yourself out of the danger zone, if you’ve been wounded, and there’s no help coming. This is a survival situation to meditate on, just so you’re mentally prepared in advance and not blind-sided by the situation one day. There are a few things you can do to condition your mind now, to learn how to “keep going”, despite pain or discomfort. One: Take cold showers. Really cold showers. Day after day. Challenge yourself to endure long cold showers. Two: Hike, run, and / or sprint on steep inclines, such as treadmills with 15% or higher incline setting (be sure to condition your legs in advance, before simply going for it). If you live in an area with long stretches of hill, you can skip the treadmill all together. The point is to get your brain accustomed to you meeting pain / discomfort with “aggression” — as you’re pushed mentally by the pain, you push back mentally with aggression.
(Sometimes you may want to stay put on the ground, and not move, after you’ve been wounded, especially in a combat zone. Why stay put? Because your movement can draw fire back in your direction. So don’t move. You are playing possum. Wait for the firing to stop, continue to play possum, and carefully plot your escape route from the field of battle; when you do make your move, stay low, hide behind objects, look for natural camouflage (even in an urban environment), etc).

RZ Mask Premium Breathing Protection Review
Today I’ll be reviewing the RZ Mask Premium Breathing Protection. I generally hate to wear breathing protection masks. Especially those cheap paper ones. You know the ones with the rubber band type attachment. They fit terribly. If you breathe too hard you push it off. The metal nose piece is always either too snug or too loose. Then It might cut you.
Not to mention that you’re just re-breathing the same stale air. With all that said it’s no wonder I never wore them. Last year when I was insulating the tiny house I went without breathing protection. I also spent the next few weeks coughing up a lung.
If only There was a better solution. With The RZ Mask from RZ Industries there is.
There are two different types of RZ Mask. The M1 is made from Neoprene and is best for mild to cold climates. The M2 (The one I have) is made from a mesh moisture wicking material. It is designed for mild to warm temperatures. The Mesh of the M1 will keep your face cooler. Each mask has two one-way discharge valves for condensation. This keeps your face dry and prevents fogged up glasses or goggles.
The RZ Mask can use 3 different types of filters. The F1 filter consists of two layers. An outer particulate layer that filters down to .1 microns. The inner layer is an active carbon element and is effective towards fumes, odors, and organic chemicals. Combining the two technologies has been laboratory tested to be 99.9% effective.
The F2 filter is the HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) Filter. It is made up of 2 layers of particulate filters. Like the F1 it filters down to .1 microns. Unlike the F1 it does not contain an internal active carbon element. The HEPA particulate filter promotes 40% better breathability than the F1.
The F3 filter is the premium filter. It combines the HEPA with the active carbon element. With it you get the .1 micron size filtration. The filtration of fumes, odors and organic chemicals from the carbon element. You also get the 40% better breathability from the HEPA filter. It’s the best of both worlds.
I can think of hundreds of uses for an RZ Mask. Had I had this when I was doing the insulation I would not have kept taking it off due to being uncomfortable. When I was sanding my plywood walls before staining. When Cleaning with heavy chemicals. Heck cleaning the cat litter box.
The RZ Mask packs up tiny in a carrying case. You can keep it in you go bag or glove box. During many disasters, like a house fire or an earthquake, the air is not safe to breathe. You need breathing protection that works and that you will use. If you have a ton of cheap paper ones you are no better off than pulling your shirt up over your face.
In my testing of the RZ Mask I found that it fit very well. The Nose piece worked great. It held it without causing pain and uncomfortable. The valves did a great job of venting out the stale air. Even though I have the M2, the mesh mask, It kept my face warm in the 30°F weather. Here in TN that’s still cold. The air I breathed in from both my mouth and nose was fresh and not as cold.
I would recommend an RZ Mask for winter camping. Especially winter hammock campers. Usually you face and feet are the only cold parts of a proper winter camp. With ski masks you end up with condensation, that sometimes freezes.
They make several designs and colors. Realtree camo, skulls and more. The RZ Mask should have a home in your BOB, Get Home Bag or car kit. I definitely like it over a ski mask for cold protection and for breathing protection.
Here’s an unboxing video of the RZ Mask.

If you have a cast iron stove, you no doubt know how to manage the flue and dampers and how long it will provide heat to your home. But there are a few “hacks” that you can improvise that will allow you to capture, store and radiate more heat longer. This can be especially useful at night when you might not want to wake up at 3 in the morning to put another log on the fire.
It could also come in handy if you’re facing a particularly cold period of weather. We had wind-chills of -30 degrees Fahrenheit in Michigan last winter, and I used some of these tricks to get the most out of our cast iron stove.
There are several factors that affect the radiance of a wood-fired stove.
- The stove material. Cast iron is the most common stove material, but there are also masonry stoves that are built with fire brick and other materials to hold heat longer.
- The size of the stove and the amount of mass that is exposed to the air.
- Venting and the amount of stove pipe that is exposed to the air, including second story rooms.
- The type of wood that is used. Soft woods burn hot, but fast. Hardwoods burn low and slow.
What we’re going to explore are ways to retain the most heat from your wood-burning stove. For the sake of argument, let’s assume you have a medium-size cast iron stove. There are some fundamental things you can do to increase its ability to hold and retain heat.
1. Increase the mass of cast iron. This sounds a bit complicated but it’s as easy as placing some dry cast iron utensils, like a Dutch oven or a frying pan, on the stove top. The utensils will get quite hot — but that’s the idea. You want to capture as much heat and hold it as long as possible.
2. Place some fire brick in the stove and the stove top. Fire brick is relatively inexpensive and you’ll only need enough to put on the bottom surface of the firebox. They’re about two inches high, so you might be reducing the size of your firebox somewhat. That’s when you can go a different route and place the bricks directly on top of the stove. Don’t stack them too high. The benefit of fire brick is that it holds heat longer than cast iron.
3. Reconsider your chimney venting configuration. Be careful here. Stovepipes should have a vertical configuration and a double-walled insulated pipe anywhere it bisects the structure, such as a second story floor or roof. However, there may be an opportunity to install a single-walled length of stove pipe to draw more heat from the pipe to the surrounding air.
4. Install a catalytic combustor. These are honeycombed shaped inserts that are covered with platinum to create a more efficient burn in your stove. They don’t work in all stoves, but are worth considering if you want to improve efficiency. The primary benefit is that they help to burn much of the smoke that is normally wasted heat in a traditional stove.
Proper installation and venting are critical safety factors for any wood-burning stove. These ideas are improvised solutions, and the two safest options are the insertion of fire bricks into the base of the firebox, or the installation of a catalytic combustor if your stove can accommodate one.
Placing anything on the stovetop, whether it’s cast iron utensils or fire bricks, requires some added care and attention in the event something falls to the floor.
Of course, these alternatives are proposed as short-term solutions in the event of extreme cold. If you need to combine too many improvised solutions like this, you might want to consider a new stove.

(NaturalNews) Have you ever met an anti-prepper? They’re people who despise the very idea of prepping and actually pride themselves on being as non-prepared as possible.
They almost universally suffer from “normalcy bias,” meaning they truly believe nothing catastrophic will ever happen simply because it hasn’t happened yet in their own life experience.

By Joshua Krause – The Daily Sheeple
For nearly three months, a mind-boggling amount of methane gas has been leaking out of the ground near Porter Ranch, California, and for most of that time, there has been very little press coverage over what has been called one of the worst environmental disasters in history. So far, 80,000 tons of methane have spewed out of the natural gas pipeline under the ground, which has been likened to an active volcano. According to a spokesperson for the SoCalGas Company, every effort to plug the leak has completely failed.
The Aliso Canyon Natural Gas Storage Facility, owned by SoCalGas, is the fifth biggest of its kind in U.S. But in late October, the company realized one of its wells was leaking. At first the company tried to close the leak using the conventional method of pouring fluids and mud down the well.
“We have tried that seven times and have been unsuccessful in trying to stop the leak,” said SoCalGas spokesman Michael Mizrahi. “I have to say more than likely it’s [because] the pressures that are coming up from the leaking well are so intense.”
The company says it doesn’t know exactly how much gas is escaping. But environmentalists estimate the effect is comparable to the tailpipes of up to seven million cars venting directly into the atmosphere every day.
The situation has gotten so bad that Governor Jerry Brown has finally declared a state of emergency. On Wednesday he issued a press release, which called for the company to try to capture some of the gas before they finish drilling a relief well (not sure how that’s possible), and to begin finding an alternative solution in case the well doesn’t work. The message also states that the SoCalGas Company will cover the costs of repairing the leak, as well the emergency response to the situation.
That response has included the evacuation of thousands of residents from Porter Ranch, and for a very good reason. This massive gas leak is starting to make a lot of people very sick.
The Express, Dec 30, 2015: Thousands suffer nose bleeds and vomiting during ‘worst environmental disaster since BP’ — An invisible environmental disaster which has been compared to the 2010 Gulf of Mexico BP oil spill has forced thousands of people from their homes… with nosebleeds, headaches and nausea, after millions of kilograms of invisible methane was released into the air… Residents claim the gas, which has drifted into surrounding neighborhoods, is making them suffer from nausea, nosebleeds, and headaches
Voice of America: Residents have suffered symptoms that include “nausea, abdominal discomfort, dizziness, light-headedness, some shortness of breath … even some nosebleeds,” said medical toxicologist Cyrus Rangan of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health… scientists are monitoring levels of benzene, a known cancer-causing agent… “We want to be sure that we are monitoring every single day because we’ve got a lot of ever-changing environmental conditions up there… so we’re not exactly sure what tomorrow’s benzene levels are going to be unless we check for it,” he said.
NPR, Dec 24, 2015: The carcinogen benzene was found well above expected levels in one government air sample… the sheer size of the release has been shocking… [Tim O’Connor, oil & gas specialist] “This is so far above and beyond what I’ve ever seen or what most people… in the oil and gas space have ever seen.”
So this gas line was leaking one of the most dangerous carcinogens known to man, and the governor is just now declaring an emergency? And the residents of Porter Ranch had to ask him to do it?
Folks, this disaster is just ridiculous on so many levels. Between the media blackout that was sustained for nearly two months, to California’s incredibly slow recognition of its magnitude, it’s almost like nobody in any position of authority wants to talk about it. And as Melissa Dykes pointed out in December, despite the fact that methane is a greenhouse gas that is 72 times more powerful than CO2, very few of the typical purveyors of climate change have had anything to say about this.
So what the hell is going on here? I’m genuinely curious, because the response to this disaster (or lack of response) by the media, the government, and the global warming crowd, has been baffling. If you have a possible explanation, let us know in the comments.

As Missouri residents continue to recover and clean up from deadly flooding, communities in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi are bracing for dangerous flooding along the Mississippi River and its tributaries.
Mississippi River floodwaters have receded around the St. Louis area, and communities that were evacuated have returned to deal with the aftermath of flood damage.
“Waters are receding but cleanup continues in many Missouri communities,” Gov. Jay Nixon said on Twitter on Monday, Jan. 4, adding that the state is coordinating with federal and local officials to speed recovery.
Now, floodwaters are moving downstream along the Mississippi River, with major flooding expected for some locations in Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi.
The Mississippi River will swell to peak levels in Tennessee and northern Arkansas as the week draws to a close.

Before I throw my two cents in, here’s a few other articles worth reading:
4 Good Reasons To Get an Emergency Burner Phone
Sick of the NSA Tracking You? Burn Them with a Burner Phone
How NSA breakthrough may allow tracking of “burner” cell phones
Burner phone? There’s an app for that, and it’s earning millions of dollars
It’s not that I’m doing anything wrong, it’s just that I really value my privacy. Sometimes, you really don’t want some stranger knowing your ‘real’ phone number. For example, if you were posting a car for sale on Craigslist, you really don’t want people calling you at 2am for the next six months after the ad runs. Or getting the slew of robocalls and unsolicited sales calls that come with it. So..the solution is a disposable ‘burner’ phone.
These things are normally associated with criminal activities, and there is some merit to that, but if you think about it, it makes sense…who has the most to lose by having their privacy and relative anonymity compromised? People who are facing jail if they get caught. And since I’m the kind of guy who feels that who I communicate with is no ones business but me, I want to be able to keep my privacy and the best way to do that so far are those stupid ‘pay-as-you-go’ overpriced phones. But, hey, what’s your privacy worth?
So, first step, you go into a WalMart or other venue and buy a phone. At the moment, no ID is required to buy one of these things so your name isn’t attached to it. (Although I fully expect this to change pretty soon.) Pay cash..don’t be an idiot. Where’s the liability in this exchange? I suppose if The Powers That Be really want to, they could come into the WalMart (or wherever) and demand video surveillance of all purchases during a particular time frame. Lets say you buy your phone on February 1. You activate the phone on May 2. The feds track the phone by the manufacturer to the wholesaler to a particular store, and then they ask for the weeks worth of video prior to that activation. So..you can either shop where you don’t think there’ll be a video record, or, do your activation so far after the purchase date that the surveillance video is long overwritten. It might also be a good idea not to buy your phone at the store thats three blocks from where you live. Think about that.
Next up, you have to activate the phone. This usually requires you to call from another phone. Obviously you don’t want to use your own phone, nor do you want to get any of your friends involved, so you need an ‘arms reach’ phone. Fortunately many places (banks, hotels, etc.) have a phone sitting on their counter for customers to use. The same cautions about surveillance video apply. And, again, try to do it far from where you sleep. If someone wants to tie you to a particular phone number, it’s gonna look pretty bad if the activation call came from a bank four blocks from your house, and the phone was purchased at the Walmart five blocks from your house. Think.
Next up, you have to power up the phone. If you’re smart, you’ll never power this thing up anywhere near where you sleep. The idea is that if the phone sends signals to the towers, you don’t want that signal giving away your location. In short, charging up your phone by your bedside will compromise your privacy. If you really want to be cautious, buy a battery phone charger, charge the charger up at home (or get a disposable-battery-powered one), take it and your phone somewhere on the other side of town, plug the phone into your battery-powered charger, and hide it somewhere secure until its fully charged. After that, pop the battery out of the phone and only put the battery in when you are actually making/taking a call and when you are nowhere near anyplace you’d feel uncomfortable with people tracking your location to. In other words, don’t call from your bathroom.
Eventually, your time on the card expires. Renew it? You could, but realistically you’re better off, from a privacy standpoint, to toss it and start a new one. The longer you use the same phone, the more likely noticeable patterns will emerge and the people digging into the phone records will notice those patterns.
Hello my friend and welcome to today’s post. You know that when I was growing up in East Texas, my father always said that trust and integrity were the most important things in a man’s character. “Without it you are nothing”, he would say to me. He was right and today we are going to …

As most of us know by now, the 2nd Amendment is all that stands between freedom and all out totalitarianism. It is the backbone of all other freedoms and rights, in a world gone raving mad with domination over others. That’s why the visionary Framers made it an absolutely unqualified, uncontrollable, ‘Shall Not Be Infringed’ for ANY reason, guaranteed individual right, period!
I saved this article for after the holidays so as not to depress anyone too much more than we already are with this out of control regime while we all were trying to enjoy what little we have left of their precious American Constitutional guarantee of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. But something happened.
We all just heard on the news that ‘he’s’ at it again with despotic fiat attempts at circumventing the Constitution, like some king, or supreme theocratic ruler, or marxist dictator, or whatever he thinks he is.
This time it’s his New Year’s resolution finally getting his illegal private citizen background check (gun sale registration) for future confiscation scam going again, with a little salt in the wounds of Freedom by also making everyone on a No Fly List forbidden from having a gun, if he can sneak that in through the ’back door’ of his administrative fiats.
Never mind that the No Fly List is also constitutionally illegal, literally throwing all Bill of Rights guarantees of due process right out the third floor window! And that so many people are on it who don’t belong on it but have no recourse but to hire a lawyer spending months and years fighting it without any guarantee of getting off the list–including even a few high ranking Government officials-that it amounts to nothing less than old fashioned Gestapo tricks to eliminate your ’opposition’?
The No Fly List (part two of the ‘control all personal free movement’ agenda along with part one, the illegal I.D. card requirement in the form of the 2005 ‘Real I.D. Act’) is a genuine abusive decree because the decisions about who gets on the list are done in secret by some hack State Dept bureaucrat based only on subjective determinations with NO clearly delineated legal criteria, other than a dubious belief of potential terrorist connections! Beat THAT, Adolph, Stalin, Mao, and the rest of you old boy JV team! ACLU, where the hell are YOU!
And as long as POTUS is getting away with all this albeit with much media consternation and question, he is still laughing and holding hands with the executioner all the way to the people’s rights gallows. Only Rand Paul stood up to the task and recently introduced a Senate Bill to preclude such ‘presidential’ executive orders without Congressional approval anytime they are in conflict with Constitutional reference.
Unfortunately a case of too little too late. Fat chance it does any good now because of how long the procedure and final voting takes. Meanwhile the noose on the neck of the 2nd/A is tightening. They get away with it because our reps let them. And WE let our reps get away with letting Obama do it!
How Bad Is It?
It’s worse than bad. The tipping point of tyranny has finally fallen over into the hands of the enemy camp. Totalitarian gun grabbers are now winning strongly. Free American patriots are losing miserably. This President and his anti-Constitutional ‘think tank’ must have been staying up long nights guzzling oceans of taxpayer funded black coffee to have a plan ready to seize upon current agenda advantageous circumstances.
Amazingly they’ve even somehow garnished enough funding for this De Facto background check gun registration decree to hire hundreds of new FBI and BATFE agents to facilitate and manage this latest criminal act against the people’s privacy rights to own a gun while they cut back on Social Security benefits and still haven’t adequately brought the VA up to much needed financial improvements for disabled combat vets!
What Triggered This Bold Attack by Obama on the 2nd/A?
Obama became tactically emboldened with new polls in the recent months including a Pew Poll report indicating that over half the population would agree to expanded background checks (aka gun registration) for private citizen sales if it helped reduce ‘bad’ people from getting guns. Which eventually includes the interpretation of ’bad’ people and the attendant Fiat laws to potentially include almost each and every one of us who disagree with the regime.
This doesn’t really mean that most people agree with anti-Constitutional gun control, it simply reflects that totalitarian mind control strategies have worked better than expected under this regime. And that far too many Americans have succumbed to the bait and switch and hook of the mythical nanny state comfort zone. Which is nothing less than falling victim to the most insidiously evil plot to eventually enslave an entire nation of people ever devised by a modern government. The Great Gun Control Hoax!
In association with the regime’s agenda, and while nobody seemed to care or pay attention to any level of statutory tyranny proliferation on the state levels, the totalitarian Cosa Nostra wasted no time during Obama’s reign consolidating their forces in a pincer maneuver with New York in the East and California in the West– which on New Year’s day put statewide background check registration into law including special police units to enforce compliance in house to house sweeps if necessary, already situated in designation!
And the disease is spreading as totalitarian billionaires are donating inexhaustible funds to ensure totalitarian legislatures get in at state levels to continue expanding anti-gun laws throughout the country replicating those New York and California.
At least 18 or more states now have similar laws, and the estimate is that if this agenda continues, over half the United States will have draconian anti-2nd/A laws by the year’s end! And this doesn’t include the many Federal level anti-2nd/A death blow bills currently waiting for nothing else but another totalitarian regime POTUS and Congress to be voted in power next year!
The Real Reason for the Treason
The POTUS, his regime, and their misled minions, actually have no confusion about this. They all know the stupidity of their vacuous arguments for gun control. They are fully aware that ‘Shall Not Be Infringed’ clearly means no gun control restrictions or laws whatsoever, of any kind.
They know that restrictions or bans on material items can never solve a problem that is fundamentally an aberration of the human behavior mechanism which manifests itself in harmful social actions. They know gun control has never and will never stop gun violence or criminals from getting weapons.
They know the 1934 NFA and 1968 GCA and all other gun control efforts are, and always were, anti-Constitutional. President Johnson rattlesnaked this law through while most people were still snoozing from trying to wake up from Viet Nam. This same law would never pass again today.
Every day more TOTALITARIANS are coming full blast out of the closet and are no longer even defending their ‘rationale’ for gun control with specious notions of good public safety intentions.
They actually will now admit they want to exercise absolute control over people with too much freedom on their hands, and too many guns in those hands. Especially when the sheeple population explosion gets too large for the ’controllers’ to manage every time they need to be fleeced for necessary government profit margins. So they don’t want their government backed paramilitary police to have to face angry people–particularly the ‘Molon Labe’ types– who have the idea that they really need their silly freedoms shouting ‘Give Me Liberty, or Give Me Death’ while holding millions of AR-15’s!
So killing the Constitution is not even denied any more. The truth is that the totalitarians fully understand completely what it takes to facilitate a Marxist/Fascist agenda, which is a complete erasure of the 2nd/Amendment by any means possible. Which means spreading lies, and providing whatever public bribery they can facilitate for their minions–followed by the complete functional disarmament of the population to emasculate any future form of public protest, popular resistance, civil disobedience from becoming a formidable physical revolution against the regime.
Sadly, too many of ‘We, The People’ still don’t get that or believe it. Even though they slap us in the face with it every chance they get.
Any Hope for a Miracle from… God?
The tyrant in Hunger Games said profoundly that “hope is stronger than fear” when talking about oppressing the people. But he forgot to mention that hopes are easily crushed and bypassed in active physical movements, because as Einstein said, “nothing happens until something moves”.
We can hope all we want. But that doesn’t get things done to change anything. And it is the devout responsibility of each of us as American citizens to protect our precious liberties.
The sad irony is that that human nature in Americans always causes them to default to try to then do a reverse ‘back door’ approach to the problem to counter the G’s initiatory back door attack.
They’ll say things like I’ll just hide my stuff or hurry up and buy more of what I need privately before the mandate goes into effect, or get beer ballsy in their delusions of revolutions by saying Molan Labe as if it remained a viable solution. When all that does is make it easier to profile potential dissidents with the latest government NSA spying expansion (oh, you didn’t know about that either?) so they wind up just buying more weapons for government storm troopers to confiscate when they come knocking.
Unfortunately we can no longer wait until the last minute. The new ’majority’ of so called democratic Americans are turn coat Tories who welcome the totalitarian nanny state and will gladly succumb to the leftist agenda and vote according to their master’s commands.
Remember, the original revolutionary patriots also amounted to less than the majority in America at that time. But we won our liberty and justice by getting off our asses and organizing and spreading the word. Part of that is spreading the ’serious’ word to our Representatives who are our employees.
Let’s do something this week by contacting our Reps and asking a simple question like “so…Ms./Mr. Representative, what are you going to do for a living after your term ends, if you let this regime get away with this illegal gun registration mandate?”
And then ask them “why hasn’t anyone introduced a bill to repeal the 1034 NFA Act and the 68 GCA for starters? You didn’t waste time getting a repeal going for the AHC act because the insurance lobbies were so nice to you? So let’s get with it on the most important illegal law Repeal in our lifetimes. If you like that nice taxpayer provided office and bennies from your Constituency?”
Otherwise, if the FBI folds to the power and influence of the current regime, and ‘can’t determine any indictable evidence’ and Hillary is the candidate, and the RINOs in the GOP can’t get their unification act together and totally support the outsider front runners, then it’s over for our 2nd/A. No exchanges, no refunds.
I know Trump and Cruz vow to use their executive order power to delete all gun control measures as soon as they get their fingers on the POTUS White House Pen set. But that ain’t in stone yet. Remember Romney? Nobody thought he could lose. Remember also that the House and Senate are also in the race, and like State G reps, the totalitarian billionaires are also funding the Leftist U.S. Reps.
The house only needs a dozen or so to shift the balance and the Senate only needs a net Democratic gain of 5 senators to end the life of all liberties, if Hillary is elected. ALL your guns that are now universal background check registered will also be subject to universal confiscations based on ‘public safety’ as ‘administratively’ determined necessary. This will be often and swift.
And the laughing leftist totalitarians will never look back.

Off-grid Power: Electricity Generation Tips for You and Your Family
More and more families are beginning to generate their own electricity, whether to fully meet their home’s needs or supplement their regular on-grid consumption. Between the rising cost of electricity, concerns for the environment, and fear of power outages, there are plenty of factors that go into deciding to move to off-grid electricity generation. That said, there are a few tips homeowners should bear in mind when choosing the best electrical system for their needs.
Look at More Than a Home’s Electrical Consumption
Electricity generating strategies that work for one home may not work for another. While a home’s electricity consumption is often flexible, things like terrain, average local weather, and natural resource access aren’t. Which is more abundant in the area—sunlight or wind? Will trees block solar arrays? Photovoltaic panels generate roughly 8-10 watts per square foot. How many square feet of outdoor space can be devoted to generating electricity?
Consider a Standby Generator
One of the biggest things keeping renewable energy sources from achieving wider use is the fact that electricity isn’t easy to store or transport. For homes that require standby power for emergencies, a propane- or natural gas-powered automatic standby generator from places like Wade Sales and Service may be the best option. These rely on liquid fuel and only turn on when a home experiences a power outage, making them an excellent addition to a home’s electricity generation system.
Know Your Electric Company’s Net-Metering Policies
Who wouldn’t love to pay for their home electric system by selling power back to their utility company? For net-metered homes, homeowners are only billed for their net power consumption– their meters run backward while they are generating more power than they’re using. Unfortunately, having a net-metered home isn’t the case in every area and it pays to be familiar with the local utility company’s policies beforehand.
Skip Major Electric Appliances
Electric heating systems, stoves, water heaters, and other large appliances will consume the majority of a home’s electrical output. Consider outfitting homes with better insulation, double-glazed windows, wood stoves, and clotheslines to reduce your dependency on large electric appliances. It’ll free up more power for lights, computers, and other needs.
Setting up a home for off-grid electricity generation goes deeper than picking between solar panels or wind turbines. By choosing the best strategy (or combination of strategies) for the local area, investing in a standby generator, understanding net-metering, and outfitting homes with low-electricity upgrades, it’s possible to meet or exceed a home’s electricity needs.

It seems that most of the people I know sense that 2016 is going to be a watershed year; a turning point towards massive change. The question is… will it be a change that will better our lives, or changes that finally drive us over the cliff?
|Graham on his “Decision America 2016” tour|
I must say that I have to agree with the sentiments that I am hearing from Franklin Graham, the 63-year-old son of Billy Graham, the most renowned Christian evangelical preacher of the last seven decades. As Graham says, we all instinctively know that our country is “in big-time trouble”. He says, “We’re in trouble spiritually. We’re in trouble economically. We’re in trouble racially.” Who can deny that? Even if you are an American who agrees with our cultural swing towards abortion, same-sex marriage, and transgenderism, you cannot deny that the racial divide in this country is snowballing and the job prospects for the next generation(s) are not looking good. As a nation, we are becoming fractured and are in danger of splitting beyond repair.
Unfortunately, the answer to our troubles will not be found in politics, and specifically in neither major political party. We have a spiritual problem, whether anyone wants to admit it or not. In fact, just as Graham expressed at a recent rally, “The moral and political walls of our country are crumbling… Our educators and our politicians and our churches seem, many times, to be more concerned about political correctness than God’s Truth and Righteousness.”
Graham points to Godlessness as the culprit. He points out that our nation was built on Biblical principles, and we have strayed from them — and he especially identifies the time period after WW II and the successful battle to defeat the threat of Communism. But I believe the spirit of Godlessness began far earlier than that. And if you ask my husband, he will tell you that he believes that from the beginning, the Founders didn’t do enough to establish this as a God-fearing nation; allowing Freemasonry to co-exist alongside Christian values in shaping the foundation and direction of our country.
This is a different topic for a different day — actually tomorrow, I will attempt to examine this paradox further. But let me just wrap up this point by saying my personal view is that God intended for this nation to be dedicated to Him; and those who first settled here believed that they were doing so as part of a covenantal relationship with God, and with clear intentions to glorify Him in the advancement of the Christian faith. The fact that it quickly got off track does not negate the original plan. But more on that tomorrow… back to the appropriateness of Franklin Graham’s call to action.
He asserts that it is time Christians get in the game; to run for office, to vote, to pray for our country, and to get involved in our education system, and every avenue of society. “Our job as Christians is to make the impact of Christ felt in every phase of life—religious, social, economic, and political,” Graham continued. I agree! Where are the Christians who are willing to declare and live their faith as mayors, city council members, county commissioners, judges, school board presidents?
In fact, in an attempt to overcome the growing secular mindset of this nation, Graham has gone so far as to prevail upon all Americans to take a pledge honoring God at home (by living biblical principles through marriage), in public (by standing for biblical principles and serving those in need), and with their vote (by supporting candidates who uphold biblical principles). He also asks Christian Americans to pray fervently and faithfully for America, agreeing to register to vote and to prayerfully consider running for office.
While I agree that if every Christian in America was faithful to fulfill all the aspects of this pledge, we would begin to see a difference in the cultural and political spheres of our nation, I believe that our commission from the Lord goes beyond these measures.
At a recent discussion in the awesome Ladies Bible Study that I attend, the subject came up of discipling Christians; that, as the Church, we Christians don’t do enough to guide and counsel new members of the faith in the way of Godly living — which, I think we would all agree, would greatly strengthen the Church. But I would to add to that my fervent belief that we need to not only educate, encourage, and strengthen the Church; but we need to introduce those outside the Church — those “of the world” — about Godly living and their need for a Savior. THAT is how we change and revive our nation! I contend that it is precisely because we Christians have tended to concentrate our efforts inside the four walls of the Church that our nation and the world has gotten into such a big mess.
My husband and I have been meeting and talking with several people in our home who are like-minded about the state of the world, and have expressed their innate sense that they need to get right with God in the midst of this chaos. But they would never have been comfortable in approaching a church; nor would the church have had any viable way of coming into contact with them… the two groups were on isolated and parallel paths, and were never going to intersect.
If we are going to truly avert the dangerous course this nation is set upon, we Christians must engage with the world. We must leave our comfort zones and “church bubbles”, as a good friend of mine describes it, and be bold in sharing our faith in every circumstance and to every person, in order to attract those who “sitting the fence” and who are capable of making a decision for God. We all know that there are those who have committed their lives to evil or whose spirit is just dead within them; they have no desire for God.
But I promise you there are millions who long for Him, but just don’t know how to go about it, or who feel they might be embarrassed in a “formal” Church setting, so they never pursue it on their own. It is up to us to pursue them! We are all spirit beings, and as we grow closer in our spirits to the Lord, we will be able to discern those whose spirits are in need of Him, and we will be drawn to them. Just think … if every Christian made it his pledge to God to seek after one lost sheep to bring them into the fold … can you envision how that would begin to change this nation?
So, I applaud Franklin Graham for his efforts to wake up America to our shared plight. Our fall cannot be fixed politically or by political correctness. BUT, we can begin to turn towards God and blaze a new trail of American commitment to our Creator. It’s time we take that path … we MUST take that path… before it is too late! C’mon, Christians … get in the fight, because we are in a battle for our nation and the eternal lives of millions!
Isaiah 6:8 And I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?” Then I said, “Here am I! Send me.”

So this week the Powerball Lottery is up to five hundred million dollars. I don’t generally play the lottery as having two dollars in certainty, is usually worth more to me than a lottery ticket. My view has also been hardened by scriptural cautions against gambling. Thirdly, one of my brothers-in-law not so laughingly calls the lottery a “Tax against stupid people, who don’t understand what the odds 25 million to one really mean” Despite the slim odds, I do know a couple of people who have won smaller lottery jackpots. One woman won a smaller jackpot a few years ago, and after taxes, was able to pay all her debts, her mortgage in full, fix her car, and allocate funds for the education of her children. She reports to work each day with joy. In her case, the lottery was a lifeline, and I am so glad she won and for the positive changes in her life.
This week, when the television announcer said that we were all more likely to be struck by lightning than win this lottery, I gave it more thought. In 2011, one of my adult sons was struck by lightning and has the long term medical issues which go with that. So, we have that type of one in a million luck, albeit usually bad. Besides, I could help my son with some of the winnings, so I broke down and bought one ticket.
There is one thing a two dollar lottery ticket does give you. It provides a couple of hours of imagining what such a windfall would do for your family. For some of us, we would change a great deal our lives and for others, we would not, choosing instead to fortify the educations, safety, security and futures of our loved ones. One of my friends, if she won, would buy new cars for everyone in her family since car repairs have taken a big chunk out of the family budget last year. She would move to a place nearer work and install a swimming pool for the hot Virginia Summers. I have different plans. If I were to win, I would change very little about the externals of our lives. I would have the vehicles maintained in perhaps a more timely manner. I would pre-pay some ongoing bills to simply know several months of breathing room. Rather than traveling in to see the vet with so many animals, I would pay the equine vet, the large animal vet and the small animal vet to come out to the farm and take care of my aging animals of all species. They have all been with me for a long time, and they deserve the best care available. I would maintain a few things around the farm a little better than I have been. I’d gravel the farm roads more often. I’d look at solar panels and put in geothermal heat. I’d get a better financial planner, but keep my accountant. Then, I would pay off my children’s university debts. I would start a foundation honoring both my father, and start one honoring my youngest son Daniel, who has passed. I would make a sizable donation to the Salvation Army in the name of my mother, who always donated to them because she said they were as frugal as she. I might write more books and worry less about their commercial outlook and more about their positive message or how they aided people reading them. I would be very hands on regarding any charitable activities and scholarships. Then, I would place reasonable amounts in trust for my children and grandchildren……enough to back them up for the future, but enough that they would need to work and not be shielded from the life God sent us all to live. Anyone looking at our lives would still see the frugal family we always were. I would also help some of our friends who have struggled with serious chronic health issues for years.
I awoke this morning to find that no one won the five hundred million dollar Powerball Lottery. I got my two dollars worth above in the form of the dreams in the paragraph above and this blog post. Will I buy another one ? No, I think this time I will go with the sure thing, and keep my two dollars.
I have decided to start a weekly Back To Basics Series for my readers. Today’s post is about wheat grinders. Here’s the deal, I feel a sense of urgency to teach people many things to help them become more self-reliant. I realize a lot of people know several self-reliant tips, but I learn great tips from my readers and I want to return the favor. I am going to share what I know and I would love to hear tips from you. I will post your new tips on the post of the week. I will start writing a new Back To Basics post every Thursday. So let’s get started with wheat grinders/mills today. One is electric and grinds/mills wheat to make flour only. The other hand-powered one can grind/mill grains, make cereal, nut butters and so much more.
As the story goes, Bonnie Jones wanted to start being more self-reliant and decided she should have a hand operated grain mill to be the best prepared. She and her husband Randy looked all around for a good quality one they could rely on. After much searching they never come up with a unit they liked. Randy decided to build one on his own, and thus was born The GrainMaker Mill. That was back in 1998 and no one ever thought it would become the basis for a variety of products that are sold all over the world from their plant in Stevensville, Montana. The company affectionately refers to the GrainMaker Mill as “Hand-Powered Goodness” GrainMaker Mill Website. I am almost giddy over this mill. I saved my money for two years to buy it. I always try to look into the future when I make purchases of any significant size. My food storage standards are pretty high and I looked high and low for just the right hand-powered crank mill. This is the one I chose. I absolutely love how it works and the quality is top notch!
Today I picked up the phone and called Bonnie at The Grainmaker Mill Company in Stevensville, Montana. I had a few questions for her and we had a fun chat about this fabulous GrainMaker Mill. She and her family make these hand crank wheat mills. I bought my GrainMaker Mill back in 2011. I wanted one that I could hand grind/mill wheat and many other grains. The GrainMaker can mill the following items:
- Wheat: hard red winter, soft red winter, hard red spring, hard white, soft white and Durum. You can also grind Kamut (Trademark) and Spelt.
- Corn: my friend Kathleen grinds her own corn and makes the best cornbread in the world.
- Rye: I love making rye bread and you will too.
- Rice: you can make rice flour and use it as a thickening agent.
- Barley, Buckwheat, Quinoa and Millett: see how many different grains we can mill?
- Oat, Groats: so many people are using oat flour these days.
- Flaxseed: yes you can grind Flaxseed in this baby!
- Beans: bean flour is great for those with gluten issues (use the GrainBreaker auger).
- Coffee: make a fresh brew using the GrainBreaker auger to grind the beans how you like them ground
- Nuts: (not refrigerated or frozen ones, let them rest until they are room temperature) Do you love nut butters as much as I do?
- Dehydrated tomatoes, potatoes and other vegetables.
Below you can see the inside of the hopper that holds the grains for milling with the coil auger peeking up from the bottom. It comes with two different augers. One is the coil auger it is used for grinding small grains like wheat, barley and rice. The other is the GrainBreaker auger is for grinding corn, legumes, coffee beans, dehydrated foods and nuts. Be sure and fill the hopper with wheat or whatever you are grinding before you start turning the handle clockwise.
Below you can see the front burr and the stationary burr with the adjustable click and lock knob. The burrs grind or mill the grains. You can make the grain coarse or fine, it’s your choice. You can make cracked wheat cereal! It has a removable dust cover where the company can engrave a name or saying that is special to your family. It’s truly a family heirloom that can be handed down from generation to generation. I opted to put my name: Linda’s.
I use the clamp below to secure the mill to most counter tops without damage. It works great on my counter top. Place the mill in the location that best works for you, place the clamp over the edge of the Mill base and turn the knobs until the clamp and Mill are secure. You can use some shelf liner under the mill for added grip and counter protection. Clean up is easy, I use a dry cloth to dust it and the cleaning brush provided. Now if you do nut butters there are more steps to cleaning it. But they are really quite easy steps, in my opinion.
Electric Wheat Grinder:
This is the NutriMill/L’Equip electric milI I typically use when I grind my hard white whole wheat berries into whole wheat flour. I make eight loaves at a time and I am too impatient to wait for all the flour I need by hand cranking with the grinder above. I believe in having more than one way to grind or mill my grains, so I chose this one because I used to teach classes at a Bosch Store and this is the one they sold. I love it. The reason I make eight loaves is because I give a few loaves to people in the neighborhood. Who doesn’t love a hot loaf of bread from the oven, right? This is the brand: NutriMill Classic Grain Mill
This is a picture of the hopper below. I grind 20 cups of wheat berries at one time. I then store the flour in freezer bags in the freezer until I have time to make my whole wheat bread. I have very busy days and this works the best for me. You cannot grind or mill Flax seeds or any other oily seed as indicated on the green sticker located on the unit. You can, however, mill the following grains:
- Wheat (both hard and soft)
- Oat groats (dehulled oats) great for making oat flour
- Rice, you can make rice flour and use it as a thickening agent
- Kamut (Trademarked)
- Dry beans
- Dent (field) corn, popcorn and dried sweet corn
- Buckwheat, barley, rye, millet, quinoa
The picture below is the flour “bowl” and the gray sponge-like deal on top you will need to keep clean to keep the air flowing properly and staying cool while milling. The way I clean it is by “tapping it against the bowl” until I can see the gray sponge without excess flour. I use a soft brush to clear out the “flour” in the bowl and the chamber that holds the bowl. I never wash the bowl or lid because I use it every other week. I did wash the bowl and lid when I originally purchased it, but that’s the only time.
The picture below shows the YES and NO lines. YES means the bowl is inserted in the chamber correctly. NO means you need to push the bowl in further or you will have flour blowing everywhere. Just giving you the heads-up here. It will only happen to you once……LOL!
The picture below shows the buttons to turn on the mill. I never change the lower button, only the top one. I barely turn the top button counter-clockwise and the mill turns on when plugged in. You MUST have the wheat berries in the mill BEFORE you turn the machine on so you don’t damage the internal parts. I think the newer models have improved, but this one works great for me.
I hope this helps you realize how easy it is to grind or mill the different grains, whether by hand or using electricity. If you can learn to make bread you can survive most any disaster or hardship that comes your way. You can barter a loaf of bread and save money every month on groceries. Let me know if you have one or more wheat grinders. I love to hear your ideas and tips.
4/5 (1) Editor’s Note: This post is another entry in the Prepper Writing Contest from Benjamin Burns. Benjamin talks about a subject so many of us have to consider. As my children get older and more self-sufficient my worries evolve as their needs and capabilities change, but prepping for disaster has to take everyone into […]
Dehydrating Food Tips
There are basically two convenient ways to store foods that will last for a long time. Freeze-dried and dehydrated foods are a great way to store foods for long periods. Preserving food techniques have been around for centuries. Freeze-dried foods are flash-frozen with oxygen and water removed while in their gas state. The process ensures a longer shelf life without sacrificing nutrition or quality.
Dehydrated foods require the moisture is removed at high temperatures. However, this process reduces the nutritional value of food because of high temperatures. Foods that are freeze-dried can last up to 25 years while dehydrated foods last up to 10 years. The process for free-dried foods only takes about 10 minutes while dehydrated foods take 25 minutes to complete.
Water Storage Tips
The first step in storing water is knowing how much you need. The average person requires one gallon of water each day. Calculate how many days of water you will need to prepare. Choose the right container that prohibits light. The containers should also be free from BPA to reduce potential contaminants. Clean the containers with one teaspoon of bleach per quart of water. Wait at least 60 seconds before pouring water into the container. Don’t forget that pets also need a half of gallon of water each day.
The purpose of a garden is to make yourself self-sufficient in the future. The first step is to understand what types of foods grow well in your region. You can find this information by visiting your state agricultural department online. You will need to prepare the soil to ensure your plants are healthy. Grow foods that are easy to store such as tomatoes, bell peppers and onions.
The location of your garden is an important factor in how well your plants grow. If you do not have enough sunlight, then consider container gardening instead. Plan to grow enough food each season to store food for everyone in your family. Preparation is the key to survival when an emergency arrives.
There’s a misperceptions shared by some that farmers have it pretty easy, relatively speaking, in the winter months compared to the high production summer months. This isn’t exactly true. Summertime means longer daylight hours and more time spent working outside, but the short days of winter carry their own responsibilities.
We’re expecting several consecutive days of winter storm warnings here in the Sierras, and that means that with the exception of feeding and watering the livestock and keeping a watchful eye on the goats who are showing signs of kidding soon, we won’t be outside working if we can help it. Sure, there’s always a chance that a limb (or worse, the entire tree) will drop and take down a fenceline, but for the most part, if we’ve done our fall prepping right, everything and everyone should be able to sit out the storm safe and snug in their shelters, pens, and coops with little intervention on our part.
For famers, wintertime means paperwork and in my case, the annual love/hate relationship I have with QuickBooks when entering all those receipts I swore I was going to enter as they came in over the summer and never found time or inclination to do. Winter also provides the time for inside work like research and continuing education. Farming is as much science and accounting as it is manual labor.
I’m always looking for ways to save money and time and in order to so that, I need to be organized. I need to know how to address an injury or illness in an animal before I need to know it. Thanks to the Internet and other people’s hard work, I’m able to find that information. As much as I dislike the Tax Man and QuickBooks, I love spreadsheets, printable templates, online calculators, apps I can load onto my mobile device and take with me in the field, and quick reference graphs and charts.
Some of my favorite downloadable documents for the rabbitry come from AZ Rabbits. They can be used as they are or, if you’re comfortable with Excel, they can be edited to suit your particular needs. I use a modified printed version of the doe sheet in the rabbit barn for quick reference and have added formulas to the cells of the electronic copy of the spreadsheet to keep on my computer. By adding formulas, I only need to add some of the information and Excel does the math for me. Especially helpful if you suffer from The Maths like I do.
This app available on the Google Play Store takes a different approach. Instead of evaluating the feed before it goes into the cow, it evaluates how the feed looks once it comes out. Aptly named the Cow Poop Analyzer, it works by comparing photographs you take to stock photos to determine the approximate crude protein and digestibility of forage/feed. This app almost makes me wish we had cattle just so I could try it out.
Wild Edibles for Livestock
We rely pretty heavily on forage for our livestock, so these two links from Purdue and the University of Vermont Extension come in pretty handy. Some people call them weeds, but our goats call them noms! It also helps to know what you’re dealing with in your garden. These two links do a great job of helping to identify weeds:
Of course, we also want to know if something is toxic and we need to eradicate it before the goats do. For that, we use the FDA Poisonous Plant Database and the Cornell University College of Agriculture and Life Science. A couple of good links to help with breeding can be found here on calculators for the gestation of goats.
Sometimes despite our best precautions, we have to deal with predators. To be the most effective and to quickly eliminate the threat, we first need to know what type of predator is attacking our animals. This link, from the Texas A&M University does a great job of explaining what to look for to identify what we’re dealing with.
We run a multi-species farm and keeping track of the feed costs for all the different animals and their requirements can sometimes be overwhelming. I really like this Feed Value Calculator from the Government of Saskatchewan (http://www.agriculture.gov.sk.ca/feed_value_calculator). It’s one of the most detailed calculators I’ve found. From their Overview:
“The Feed Value Calculator calculates the relative value of crude protein, total digestible nutrients (TDN), calcium and phosphorous, based on the market price and nutrient content of four reference feeds (barley grain, canola meal or wheat distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS) or feed peas. 1:1 mineral and limestone.
A cost factor is then calculated for each nutrient. The cost factors are used to calculate the relative value of other feeds based on their nutrient content. Detailed user instructions are provided in the “Market Price of Reference Feeds”, “Relative Feed Value” and “Feed Price Comparison” worksheets.
The Feed Value Calculator uses Multivariate Statistical Techniques. The Inverse Matrix computations were validated by Dr. Peiqiang Yu, Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture Research Chair, Feed Research and Development, College of Agriculture and Bioresources, University of Saskatchewan, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, using the IML procedure in SAS®.”
The Pearson’s Square Protein Calculator (a simple protein calculator) can be found here. If you’re looking for one specific to goats, this one from the Langston University does a good job and also includes the biotype, class, and gender of the goat in its calculations or this one from SheepandGoat which addresses the feed needs of lactating dairy goats.
Winter is also the time that I finally have a chance to sit down and take stock of MY shelter. With all the work that goes into the animals, it becomes even more important that I have a way to organize my home. Reformation Acres has an extensive list of free or for-fee templates for organizing the million tasks that need to be done to keep a household humming along. You can also find Essential Prepping Calculators that cover a variety of topics.
There’s a lot of value to hands-on experience when it comes to farming, but it also involves a lot of science and that type of knowledge is ever-changing as we learn more about biology. The University of Massachusetts Amherst, Washington State University, and Triton College all offer courses in agriculture and the best part is they’re online!
Although it may seem that farmers get to take the winter off, there’s more work to be done indoors and technology makes it possible for us to stay organized and continue learning even during inclement weather. Just don’t ask me how much time I spend on Pinterest. Stay tuned!

Even more sheriffs are urging Americans to carry firearms to protect themselves from terrorism and mass shootings.
A number of top cops in recent weeks have encouraged citizens who have carry permits to not leave the house without a gun.
In early December, Paul J. Van Blarcum, the sheriff in Ulster County, New York, took his message to Facebook.
“ATTENTION LICENSED HANDGUN OWNERS,” he wrote. “In light of recent events that have occurred in the United States and around the world I want to encourage citizens of Ulster County who are licensed to carry a firearm to PLEASE DO SO.”
In early December Off The Grid News reported on one Florida sheriff – Wayne Ivey – who made similar comments and attracted national attention. But since then, other sheriffs have joined the chorus.
Van Blarcum and Ivey are not alone. Media reports indicate that sheriffs in a number of areas share their sentiments.
“The police cannot be everywhere,” Sullivan County (New York) Sheriff Michael Schiff wrote. “The Second Amendment and the laws of New York State give citizens the tools to defend themselves and their families from harm until law enforcement can arrive on the scene.”
Said Sheriff Chris Blair of Marion County Florida: “If you are certified to carry a gun, I would like to encourage you to do so.”
Sheriff Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona, told the media that his goal of “utilizing 250,000 citizens with concealed weapons is to stop the carnage, stop the killing before cops arrive.”
How Armed Citizens Help
At least one big city policeman — Chief James Craig of Detroit — agrees with the sheriffs. Like the sheriffs, Craig is urging citizens to carry concealed weapons to deter terror.
“A lot of Detroiters have CPLs (concealed pistol licenses), and the same rules apply to terrorists as they do to some gun-toting thug,” Craig told The Detroit News. “If you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens.”
Craig continued, “We don’t have laboratories where we can test these theories, but there is something to the argument that terrorists want a high body count — and if they can only shoot a few people before they’re taken out themselves, it wouldn’t have the kind of impact they want.”
Off-Duty Cops, Too
Sheriff John Urquhart of Kings County (Seattle) in Washington urged his deputies to carry their guns when off duty in case of a terrorist attack. Like many law enforcement officers, Urquhart is concerned about ISIS sympathizers going after soft targets such as churches or shopping malls.
“What I am worried about, what causes me to lose sleep at night, is a homegrown terrorist,” Urquhart said. “That’s somebody that hasn’t come over from Syria, that’s not an official part of ISIS, but has been radicalized by ISIS by their propaganda. I’m afraid of a homegrown terrorist that does something here. It’s going to be a soft target.”
Urquhart did not urge citizens to arm themselves but he voiced no obvious opposition to the idea.
“I’m not going to be presumptuous and say somebody should carry a gun and I’m not going to be presumptuous and say somebody shouldn’t carry a gun,” Urquhart told radio host Jason Rantz. “To be armed is a very personal decision … and everybody has to make that decision themselves without input from me and frankly, anybody else.”
Not surprisingly, the sheriffs’ statements have stirred up some controversy, particularly in New York where Van Blarcum has been attacked on social media, The Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
“I didn’t take it as a Second Amendment issue,” Van Blarcum told Radio Woodstock. “I was reaching out to people who are already legally licensed to carry handguns, so it definitely wasn’t a Second Amendment issue. … We’re partners with the public in crime prevention. So these people are legally registered to carry, and I’m encouraging them if they’re comfortable to do that to carry.”
What is your reaction to the sheriffs’ statements? Share your views in the section below:
I first wrote this post on January 11, 2013. I am reprising it here because it should be remembered.
My parents had friends who lost everything when they fled Austria, and came to England, in the time of Hitler. In these times, it’s very important to remember the words of those who were there.
This is an abbreviated statement from Kitty Werthmann, who was also a citizen of Austria when Hitler was voted in as their ruler:
Beginning of Kitty Werthmann’s testimony, paraphrased.
“Next came gun registration. People were getting injured by guns. Hitler said that the real way to catch criminals (we still had a few) was by matching serial numbers on guns. Most citizens were law-abiding and dutifully marched to the police station to register their firearms. Not long afterwards, the police said that it was best for everyone to turn in their guns. The authorities already knew who had them, so it was futile not to comply voluntarily.
“No more freedom of speech. Anyone who said something against the government was taken away. We knew many people who were arrested, not only Jews, but also priests and ministers who spoke up.
“Totalitarianism didn’t come quickly, it took 5 years from 1938 until 1943, to realize full dictatorship in Austria. Had it happened overnight, my countrymen would have fought to the last breath. Instead, we had creeping gradualism. Now, our only weapons were broom handles. The whole idea sounds almost unbelievable that the state, little by little eroded our freedom.”
“This is my eyewitness account.
“It’s true. Those of us who sailed past the Statue of Liberty came to a country of unbelievable freedom and opportunity.
“America is truly is the greatest country in the world. “Don’t let freedom slip away.
“After America, there is no place to go.”
(End of Kitty Werthmann’s paraphrased speech)
More information on Kitty Werthmann:
Does this sound familiar ? The US is experiencing a creeping gradualism with the erosion of our freedoms daily. When Glenn Beck says, “Know what you believe”, be clear. The days of mandatory gun registration or mandatory declaration of what you own may be coming. It can be a preface to confiscation. Remember that the Patriot Act already allows confiscation of privately held materials of any kind, if the government declares an emergency. This can be done even without the provision of as much as a receipt to the person, family or company the items were redistributed from.
As my parents used to say, “A word to the wise is sufficient”.

When it comes to prepping there is no shortage of DIY ideas and projects that we can find. Let’s face it, if we spent money on all the products we wanted like food storage shelving units, long term food storage, solar generators, rocket stoves and sun ovens it would break the bank.
DIY prepping isn’t just about saving money or being cheap like I am, it’s also about learning new skills that might be useful if our lives get turned upside down and the resources we are used to are not available.
Last week I talked about why buying an older vehicle is not only good in the event of an EMP, but it also gives you an opportunity to do your own repairs on the vehicle, and gives you a better understanding about how everything works in the event that an auto mechanic is not an option.
Another example is the long bow I made in the past. I didn’t start this project to become an avid bow hunter, I did it to learn why and how it works like it does. Because of this long bow project, I have become more interested in archery, and who knows, maybe I will be that avid bow hunter someday.
At its core prepping is about becoming more self-reliant, and what better way is there to be less dependent on someone else, than to learn how to do it yourself.
DIY Prepping Resources
The odds are, if you have an idea and want to do it yourself, someone already has, and they have posted a video or written an article about it. There are a few options when it comes to finding information or directions for DIY prepping ideas.
Google it: You can always just type it into a search engine, but if you do be prepared to search through the good, the bad and the ugly. Everyone and their brother want to throw up a video (pun intended) about the DIY project they just did. Just make sure and do your research and don’t take bad advice. Just like going to the doctor…get a second opinion.
Prepper Website DIY: Todd over at Prepper Website publishes links to new preparedness articles every day, he also tags these articles and archives them into categories. When you go to Prepper Website and look to your right, you will see a button that says “Quick Links” just change that to “Prepping Topics” and you will see a huge list of tags. Here is the DIY category.
DIY Prepping on Pinterest: This is also another great resource for DIY prepping ideas. Pinterest is a place where can save articles you have found, or find some other people have found. Be careful though, it can be addictive. You can start by looking for DIY ideas, and an hour later you are looking at something totally different. Here is my board on DIY prepping, and here is a link to a Pinterest search on DIY Prepping.
15 DIY Prepping Ideas
In this week’s podcast Lisa and I talked about why DIY prepping is about more than just saving money, and also went over a few ideas that we had that you could try in order to learn some new skills.
SPP132 DIY Prepping Ideas
Altoids Survival Tins: These little survival tins are great to put in your car or carry in your bug out bag and can be made to fit your needs. You can make one for first aid supplies, fishing kits or just a general survival kit. The great thing about these, is they force you to look at what survival supplies you might need, and then transfer that to a larger scale kit.
DIY Solar Generator: You can buy one of the Goal Zero solar chargers if you like, or you can try your hand at making one yourself. I recently built a solar generator, and in the process learned quite a bit about how to harness energy. It’s much more than connecting a solar panel to a battery.
Paracord Projects: There is no end to what you can do with paracord, you can make bracelets, lanyards, wrap knives, make zipper pulls, make shoe laces and so on. The great thing about these projects is they help you keep your paracord under control. 100 feet of paracord can get tangled and hard to store once it’s out of the package.
Stoves (Rocket Stove, Tin Can Stove): We can buy a little Coleman stove (and probably should) but making a rocket stove or other DIY stoves will give us an idea about how the fuel, oxygen, fire process works. Someday our camp stove might not be available, so knowing how to make one might come in handy.
Food Storage Shelves: We are always looking for more ways to store our food and keep it organized, a great way to do this is to build some shelving. Doing this could give you extra useable space in closets or even shelves next to the refrigerator like I plan on doing in the near future.
Survival (Zombie) Weapons and Primitive Tools: Not all of us want to be mountain men or outdoors men or woman, but there every well could come a time in the future when primitive skills and tools will become necessary. what would you do if and when everything we have stockpiled is gone? Can we do without the technology we have today?
Shelter Building & Tying Knots: Right along with primitive skills goes shelter building. Not only do we learn about how to make the forces of gravity work for you and learn about how to use mother nature to your advantage, you also learn the proper way to tie knots. Learning how to tie different knots is not only valuable for building a sturdy shelter, it is valuable in everyday life.
Char Cloth and Other Fire Starters: Even though we probably have 10 Bic lighters laying around and in our bug out bags, it never hurts to know a few different ways to start a fire. As simple as char cloth is to make, it surprises me how many people don’t know how to make it.
Crisco Candles: this one is so simple it’s almost stupid. The odds are I would never need to do something like this, but as simple as it is its worth at least knowing how it’s done, all you need is some wick material, oil and a container. This can also be done with sardine cans or crayons.
Survival Food: With prepping being all about becoming more self-reliant it only makes sense to learn how to make and preserve food for survival. This can be something like making beef jerky, making your own survival food bars, learning to smoke meat or even making your own yogurt, cheese and Butter.
Food Storage Buckets: Here is another one where you can buy prepackaged food storage buckets, but for half the cost you can do it yourself. At first it can seem pretty complicated, but it really isn’t that hard to do. This article and podcast Lisa and I did goes through different food storage ideas, and how easy the 5 gallon bucket method really is.
Growing Your Own Food: Gardening and growing your own food includes a wide range of topics, and there are plenty of websites dedicated just to gardening. If you have the means, growing your own food will reduce your dependency on the food supply line because the supply line is from your yard to your kitchen. There are also other techniques you can learn like hydroponics and aquaponics.
Hunting and Butchering Meat: Along with gardening hunting or growing your own meat will also reduce your dependency on grocery stores. You don’t need to raise beef, you can raise rabbits, quail, chickens and other small game that don’t require much room. Raising your own meat is only the first part, then you need to clean and butcher it to eat.
Canning: If you are gardening or growing your own food you are going to need a way to preserve it. Canning is a great way to take the food you grew and preserve it for later when you need it most. Even if you don’t grow your own food, you can still buy in bulk and can it for your food storage.
Sewing: Because cloths are more readily available than any time in history, sewing is becoming a lost art. The truth is that if there ever comes a time when the cloths on our backs and the shoes on our feet are all that we have, we better know how to fix and mend them.
The Tip of the Iceberg
This list of 15 ideas is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to DIY prepping ideas. This article has even more that I didn’t mention here. Even if you try something and totally mess it up, just call it a learning experience and try again. After all, that’s what it’s all about, learning to fend for ourselves.
What DIY prepping projects have you done or plan on trying? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below.
A couple of months ago when Tim Young approached me about his book Playful Preparedness: Prepare Your Children-For Life, I withheld judgment because historically, Backdoor Survival readers did not seem to be interested in children’s books. I did want to keep and open mind however and when my review copy of the book arrived, I knew we had a major score on our hands.
So what is this book about? It is a well written handbook of 26 fun and engaging games to be played with your children. The reality, however, is that in my opinion these games can also be played with other adults. With names such as “I-Spy”, “Picnic Attack” and “Lost In Space”, who can resist?
Each game is designed to teach preparedness skills, situational awareness, and survival mindset. The “Picnic Attack” game, as an example, is a spur of the moment picnic designed to simulate an evacuation. It requires a bug out bag, a picnic spot, and some survival food. During the course of the game, you will leave home, go to the designated spot, eat the food. During the process, you go through the items in the B.O.B. and either use them, test them, or discuss their purpose.
See what I mean? Adults can have fun doing this as well, and this is just one example of many.
In addition to Playful Preparedness Tim also shared his eBook The Survival Mindset: Situational Awareness to Avoid Violence & Survive Disasters. This is a companion book in that it too teaches situational awareness, this time focusing on adults. All told, both are excellent additions to Prepper Book Festival 10: The Best New Books to Help You Prepare.
Last week Tim answered his initial round of interview questions in Prepper Book Festival 10: Start Prepping! He is back again today for a second interview plus to giveaway a copy of both Playful Preparedness and The Survival Mindset.
Enjoy the encore interview then be sure to check in below to learn about the giveaway.
An Interview with Tim Young, Author of Playful Preparedness and The Survival Mindset
Given your background, knowledge and experience, what do you feel are the three most important survival or prepping skills?
The answer depends on what the survival situation is, of course. But in general, I’d say it’s critical to have:
1. The ability to source and purify water;
2. The ability to source natural food (foraging, gardening fishing, hunting); and,
3. The ability to protect yourself, which means shelter as well as personal security.
Do you feel totally prepared and if not, what prep area concerns you the most?
We feel totally prepared in terms of all that’s important to live—sourcing food, water, shelter, knowing how to hunt, grow and preserve. The ability to barter and defend and so on. However, our biggest weakness, like that of many I suppose, is in the area of catastrophic or emergency medical care. Sure, we make our own medicines and have QuickClots, Israeli Bandages and all that, but that’s not the same as having the know how for emergency surgery and stored antibiotics.
For that reason among others, I hope we keep the system alive and well.
To what extent does your family participate in your personal preparedness efforts?
It’s something my wife and I are equally committed to and passionate about. It’s so second nature to us that we really don’t even think about it any more. The notion of prepping is something that non-preppers or new preppers think about—once you get immersed in it, it just becomes a way of life.
Our extended family is like pretty much everyone else; relatively unprepared. We’ve had some success influencing them but honestly don’t try that hard. Prepping via preaching often backfires, so we just try to lead by example.
What is your favorite survival or pepping book? (It can be fiction or non-fiction.)
The Road. I’m sure many of your readers have seen the movie, which is great, but it doesn’t convey the same poetry as Cormac McCarthy’s words do.
What about your survival favorite movie?
Contagion. It’s entertaining, plausible and realistically frightening.

The Final Word
Who would have thought that playing games would teach so much about situational awareness?
These games are not fear-mongering or doomer-porn, but rather fun activities that adults can play with their families or amongst each other. I personally think they would be a gentle introduction to prepping for those that are reluctant or fearful of getting started.
The trend toward learning to prep by playing games is a good one and I hope to see more of the same going forward.
Enjoy your next adventure through common sense and thoughtful preparation!

You don’t like to think about it, but deep down you know it can happen. Disaster can strike without warning, leaving your family without water, food, or electricity, and without medical or police support. How will you survive when that happens? How will you protect your family from threats of violence?
Buying insurance, writing wills, getting our teeth cleaned, and saving for retirement are just a few of the precautions we routinely take to mitigate risks, but most people fail to prepare for what’s most important.
They fail to prepare for their own survival.
With 91% of Americans living in places at a moderate-to-high risk of disasters and with all of us dependent on a very fragile life-support system, it’s time for you to take preparedness seriously.
When you read this book you will
- understand the 27 disasters you’re likely to face why some people perish when others don’t, and you’ll know how to ensure your family survives.
- master situational awareness and the survival mindset you need to avoid becoming a victim of violence.
- know when to stay, when to bug out, and how to implement an evacuation plan.
- learn the best non-firearm options for self-defense.
- discover the best ways to generate electricity, store water and food, and handle sanitation and medical care on your own.
Bargain Bin: For your convenience, here is a list of all of the books in the current Backdoor Survival Prepper Book Festival as well as a link to the book mentioned by today’s author.
The Road by Cormac McCarthy: A father and his son walk alone through burned America. Nothing moves in the ravaged landscape save the ash on the wind. It is cold enough to crack stones, and when the snow falls it is gray. The sky is dark. Their destination is the coast, although they don’t know what, if anything, awaits them there. They have nothing; just a pistol to defend themselves against the lawless bands that stalk the road, the clothes they are wearing, a cart of scavenged food—and each other. If you have not read the book (or seen the movie) please do. Highly recommended!
