Elderberry Concoctions That Will Keep You Healthy All Winter

As always, I’m going to start this article with the standard caveat: Be very careful whenever you harvest a natural or wild fruit or berry. Only 10 percent of wild berries are safe to eat. The other 90 percent are toxic — and some like belladonna or deadly nightshade are downright poisonous.

Unfortunately, this applies to some degree with elderberries. There are two varieties. One has a red look when ripe and the other has a blue tone. The blue ones are safe to eat. The red ones can be toxic. The blue variety is referred to as Sambucus candensis. The red variety is referred to as Sambucus pubens. Don’t eat the red ones, look for the blue ones. They’ll often have a frosty, white coating as they mature.

You should know as well that the leaves, stems and roots of elderberries are toxic. It’s enough to make you think twice about harvesting this fruit, but hey, rhubarb stalks taste great and the leaves are poisonous. You just have to know what you’re doing.

We’re going to cover finding, harvesting and processing elderberries. The processing step essentially involves reducing the berries to a juice that can be made into elderberry juice, elderberry syrup and elderberry jelly. But you may want to think twice before grabbing a handful of wild elderberries and chomping them down.

Fast, All-Natural Pain Relief With No Nasty Side Effects!

For one, the berries are a bit tart. I would say they’re similar to wild grapes. The other thing you’ll find is they have very thin, almost sliver-like seeds. If you have any gaps in your teeth, you’ll be looking at about 10 minutes of flossing after chewing a handful. That’s why the first step for any elderberry recipe is juicing the fruit.

Finding Elderberries

Elderberries are a bushy plant that grows from 6 to 16 feet tall. They mature throughout the summer, which makes them a great wild berry to harvest. Unlike other berries like mulberries, black-raspberries and black berries — which have a limited growing season of 2 to 3 weeks — elderberries show up from July through September in many parts of North America.

Harvesting Elderberries

The berries are easy to harvest in bunches tossed into a basket and unlike some wild berries, there are no thorns. There are various ways for separating the berries, from using a wide-toothed comb to simply pulling them off with your hands. Pick out any stems and wash them thoroughly and you’re ready to take the first step: Creating elderberry juice. Look for them growing in fields and forests and maybe you’ll be surprised to find one in your backyard. Cast some of the berries around and you’ll have a steady harvest over the years.

Elderberry Recipes

We’re going to cover three basic elderberry recipes – two that can be used for medicinal purposes and a third that is simply delicious:

  1. Elderberry juice.
  2. Elderberry syrup.
  3. Elderberry jelly.

All three of these recipes are easy to make, but first you must extract the juice. The good news is that this is a simple and basic process using a saucepan, some water and a potato masher. It’s a very off-grid approach and you definitely don’t want to use a food processor.

Elderberry Juice Recipe 

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of elderberries
  • 1 cup of water
  • Sugar, honey of other sweetener to suit your taste

Directions

Place the elderberries and the water in a saucepan. You can scale this up if you have a lot of elderberries. The basic combination is one cup of water to every cup of elderberries. Bring the water/elderberry combination to a gentle boil and begin mashing the berries with a potato masher.

After a few minutes of mashing, pour the elderberry/water mix into a fine sieve over a bowl and gently mash with a spoon to extract as much juice as possible. Discard the mash. I usually toss it on the compost heap.

You now have elderberry juice, but your first taste will be quite tart. If you’re the tart type, go for it. I like to add a little sugar or honey to sweeten it up.

Elderberry Syrup Recipe

This is actually a highly effective, natural medicine. It’s been used for hundreds of years to treat coughs, colds and flu, and we’re going to take it up a notch with an infusion of willow bark. Elderberries are very high in vitamin C and by their nature help the auto-immune system. This recipe also has honey as a key component, which is also a natural remedy, and then there’s the willow bark component. The inner layer of willow bark, referred to as the xylem layer, has high concentrations of an element known as “salicin.” Salicin is the active ingredient in aspirin. In fact, it was a German chemist named Augustus Bayer who first synthesized salicin to make a product now known as Bayer Aspirin.

You can leave out the willow bark step if you’re just trying to make syrup for pancakes, but if you want a very effective cough syrup for coughs, colds sore throat and flu, the willow bark infusion might be a good idea.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup of elderberry juice
  • 1 cup of honey
  • 1 cup or water
  • (To make a willow bark infusion add 1 tablespoon of shaved xylem from the inner, heartwood layer of a willow tree in hot water for 30 minutes and strain.)

Directions

Add all ingredients to a sauce pan and heat to a gentle boil for 10 minutes, stirring regularly. Pour into glass, canning jars and process in boiling water for 25 minutes. Store in a refrigerator or fruit cellar for up to one year. Once opened, keep refrigerated and it should last for up to a month.

Elderberry Jelly Recipe

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of elderberry juice
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 box fruit pectin
  • 4 1/2 cups sugar

Directions

Boil the ingredients for one minute and pour into canning jars. Process in a hot, boiling water bath with jars totally immersed for 25 minutes. Remove jar or jars and let cool. Store in a root cellar or fridge.

As for the .40, the snappy recoil makes some gun owners choose another option, especially when a 9mm is on the table. In addition, while the 9mm packs a punch, it doesn’t take a giant to control that power.

Because both male and female shooters can control the 9mm with ease, the caliber is so popular that it’s now beating the .45 in sales. Specifically, Ruger’s SR1911 has been met with major applause and anticipation as it has a small kick and a lightweight aluminum frame for those with concealed carry licenses.

Then, after World War II, the 9mm SMGs from Sten and Sterling were developed. When Poland decided to use the 9mm Luger over their own Radom pistol, it was the first time in history a nation chose a service cartridge over their own, based on pure performance.

The Walther P38 came along to further push the 9mm handgun, and soon the United States chose to adopt the modified P38 pistol in the form of a Beretta 92.

Beyond the history of the gun, there are many other reasons why the 9mm remains a fan favorite. Sure, shooters may eventually move on to a heavier caliber gun, but it’s likely they will begin with a 9mm Luger cartridge. Otherwise, it’s possible to start with a gun that recoils too much and discourages a shooter’s improvement.

In addition to minimal recoil, there’s also an economic consideration. The 9mm Luger ammunition full metal jackets are often available at a decent price, which is always important for those trying to save money while visiting the range. Some bargains can be found at Cabela’s, Midsouth Shooters, and Brownells, where the price is often half the price when compared to .40 or .45 caliber loads.

Then there’s ballistics to consider. Obviously, the 9mm can’t produce a wound as impactful as the .45 ACP, .40 S&W or .357 Magnum, but it can be enough to do the job with the proper load. Any loading with proper quality control and cartridge integrity should come first. After all, not all makers have the same quality control, bullet technology, case mouth seal or primer seal.

Finally, some of the best guns in the world are made with the 9mm Luger caliber. Some examples include the SIG P226, HK VP9, Glock 19, and Beretta 92. All of these guns are known for being both accurate and extremely reliable.

Here are the five best ways to save money while building your stockpile supply of food on a budget.

1. Define your budget.

That is, define the amount you can spend weekly or monthly so that you can plan and prioritize purchases. The amount that you can budget toward your stockpile is ideally tracked separately from your other funds. You even can set up a separate bank account (such as a savings account) and have money transferred to it on a recurring basis (from a paycheck or from your main account). Having a separate fund or account for your stockpile will allow you to clearly define what your budget is, and it will allow you to take advantage of sales on items you use.

2. Plan and prioritize.

Whether you are starting your stockpile or are adding to an established stockpile, evaluating and prioritizing the most likely needs for your stockpile is a smart move. Prioritize the likely threats to your power supply and your ability to access resources. Ask yourself: Why are you stockpiling, and what is most likely to occur that will make you rely on your stockpile? Is it a flood or a windstorm that is more likely to hit your area? First focus on getting a stockpile ready for a short-term outage before you move on to long-term needs.

Remember the last time you heard someone ask for another serving of that delicious home-canned eggplant or Brussels sprouts? Not likely. There are some foods which are better off being preserved by a method other than canning, and a few that are not conducive to any kind of preservation and are best simply enjoyed in season and let go until next year.

The reasons for choosing an alternative to canning are almost always centered around food quality, ease of processing, or safety.

Quality

Canning can cause some foods to lose flavor, texture, color or a combination. Vegetables such as turnip, parsnips, most greens and perhaps sweet peppers are able to be canned but are less appealing that way than when frozen. Most cruciferous vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage do not do well canned—with one important exception being in pickled mixtures. The reason nobody cans straight cauliflower but many people make cauliflower pickles is probably due to the canning process required: as a low-acid vegetable, adequate pressure-canning to ensure a safe product would probably result in mushy cauliflower. But added vinegar allows a quick process in regular boiling water and turns out a tasty crisp-tender product. By themselves, the best way to preserve the texture of these crunchy vegetables is to freeze them, but they are also good dehydrated.

Dehydrating and drying are good techniques for many vegetables. Broccoli, corn, carrots and cabbage dehydrate well, store easily, and taste great in soups and stews. Vegetable chips make fun snacks. Dry beans, of course, are an excellent choice. Some foods are almost always preserved by some kind of drying procedure, such as garlic and ginger.

Finally, A Backup Generator That Doesn’t Require Gasoline!

Many fruits take well to canning, but not all. Strawberries lose color and flavor when canned, causing many people to prefer them frozen or dried. Soft berries such as raspberries and blackberries are often too delicate to survive the canning process. Other fruits such as melons do not can well—except, as with some vegetables, if pickled.

Ease of Processing

Sure, you can spend hours preparing peeling and cubing and parboiling potatoes and pumpkin if you want to—and sometimes it is truly worth it—but it often makes more sense to simply store them in the root cellar.

Storing appropriate vegetables—carrots, beets, rutabaga, onions, leeks, winter squash and cabbage—in a cold dark cellar is one of the easiest ways to store them, and root-cellaring can be combined with other methods for a great alternative to canning. My freezer is usually packed completely full by October, at around the same time my cellar gets cold enough to store vegetables. When the food in the root cellar approaches the end of its shelf life, enough food has been eaten out of the freezer to make room for root cellar refugees.

I do enjoy the convenience and delicious flavor and aroma of canned potatoes, which makes it worth the effort of at least one batch every season before putting the remainder into cold storage. Canned meats are wonderful, too, but labor-intensive canning is a matter of personal preference. People spend their valuable homesteading time on what they consider most important, and canned potatoes or meat may not make the cut for everyone.

Freezing is a relatively easy process for many foods. I keep items like meat stock and applesauce in the freezer as well as on the pantry shelves. If I have just a couple pints, it’s hardly worth running the canner for, and I put them in the freezer instead if I have room. For larger batches, I can process a canner-full and freeze anything left over or the contents of any jars that didn’t seal.

Dehydrating is easy, too, once you get the hang of it. It’s a bit of a learning curve at first, knowing how to dry vegetables until they are dry enough to impede growth of bacteria but not so dry as to lose appeal. But a little practice can produce excellent results.

Safety

Some foods are not safe to be canned. One of the most important things to remember is that adequate heat needs to reach the center of the jar and stay hot for enough time to make the canning procedure safe. For this reason, pureed foods such as mashed squash and pesto should not be processed using home canning equipment. While it is possible that these foods might heat sufficiently to kill pathogens, it is not a sure enough bet to risk your health on.

Cheese and butter should not be canned, either. These and other low-acid foods can provide an environment in which botulism can develop unless tested guidelines are followed. Dairy foods and novelty items such as cake and bread are strongly discouraged by official testing entities, and no reliable guidelines are available.

Just Eat and Enjoy

Sometimes the best thing to do is savor the flavor of the season and let it go when it’s gone by.  Foods like zucchini and summer squash, for example, are foods for which the only tested guidelines call for adding pineapple juice and diluting that wonderful taste of summer we seek to preserve. I sometimes freeze a few bags of zucchini—in slices for sautéing, chunks for ratatouille, and grated for cakes and muffins—but it isn’t part of my vegetable staples for winter.

Cherry tomatoes can be frozen whole for winter soups and stews, but they’ll never be as good as they are straight off the vine. For these and a few other vegetables, it makes sense to preserve only a minimal amount and share any harvest surplus with neighbors, livestock or wildlife—provided, of course, that household food security is not a potential concern.

Should it Be Canned?

Using home canning to preserve the harvest is many people’s go-to, and with good reason. But it is always valuable to first evaluate whether canning is the best option. For a variety of reasons, some foods are better frozen, dried, root-cellared or not preserved at all.

A Prepper’s Guide to Cold Weather Gear

Let’s cover some of the important concepts of gearing up for the Fall and winter.

Proper sleeping bag: remember to switch off those lighter summer bags for a winter-weather/extreme cold weather sleeping bag, preferably with a Gore-Tex cover. Don’t forget a good, reliable ground pad to rest on…remembering the importance in preventing conduction (the passage of body heat into the ground, and cold from the ground into the body).

Gore-Tex “Monster”: That’s right! Become the Gore-Tex Monster!  You need a good Gore-Tex top and pants to protect you from the cold and the moisture.  Gore-Tex breathes and it is reliable. They have Gore-Tex jackets too. Just remember not to lean too close to the stove or the fire and melt it. Read more on what to wear in the harshest of environments.

Footgear/Thermals/Socks: All of these are vital to winter weather preparedness. Make sure that you pack heavy socks and have at least one change of each packed in a waterproof bag and stuffed in your pack. Read more about protecting your feet and how important it is.

Foods to pack: Stick with dried and dehydrated stuff, such as jerky, dehydrated vegetables, and fruits. The canned stuff is tough to protect from a freeze.  The dehydrated stuff can be reconstituted easily enough with water.  If you have snow, you have water.  Don’t forget “Vitamin R” …that’s Ramen!  Pasta is great stuff for a base and some carbs.  Load up also on vitamin c and multivitamins in your pack.

ORS: Oral Rehydration Solutions. I wrote a good bit about them in past pieces.  These guys are the next best thing to an IV and you don’t even need a catheter.  Dehydration is a biggie in the cold months…this is because people become cold and they naturally shy away from drinking water.  Remember: thirst is a late sign of dehydration.

Fire starting equipment: waterproof matches, lighters, and material to start it with. Another option is to buy a “fire log” and saw it/cut it down into manageable pieces.  That’s what Firestarter is that you buy from all these “pioneers” such as Coleman for 3 or 4 dollars.  The Fire-log costs you a little more and then supplies you with enough material for 100 of those Coleman packages.

First Aid supplies: remember that things freeze. Not alcohol!  There are your disinfectant pad and any kind of stuff for sanitation.  Also, pack some hand warmers to warm up IV fluids if you ever give one in the fall or winter.  It’ll take away the shock of that cold fluid hitting into your patient.  Also for thawing out water or IV bags if needed. For water, if you’re going to be out for extended periods of time, you may wish to empty some of the water out of your canteens for if it freezes to prevent canteens from splitting (although I’ve never seen this with military issue canteens. During the winter months, I carry stainless steel canteens from WWII and fill them up ¾ of the way.  Should it freeze, then I’d just set it on the coals and thaw it out.

Radios: check out your commo gear and make sure your batteries are fresh with spares packed.

Ammo, knives, and weapons: safeguard and make sure (the former) is packed with protection from plastic bags. The latter two: ensure they’re cleaned and coated with a good coating of oil and fully operational.

Prepare all your gear now, while the weather is still fairly warm because you should always plan ahead and take care of things sooner instead of later.  Take the time to do this, because it is an investment in your well-being that could mean the difference in your survival.  JJ out!

Kershaw 1990x Brawler Pocket Knife Review

I’ve been a fan of Kershaw knives for a while now and I’ve owned quite a few over the years. Probably what I appreciate most about Kershaw is that their knives are relatively inexpensive. Kershaw has probably made hundreds of knives over the years that are well under $50.

I recently picked up a Kershaw Brawler and I’ve been putting it through the paces these past couple months. Got to say, for the small price tag this isn’t a bad pocket knife. That’s not to say it doesn’t have its flaws, because it does, but we’ll get into those in a bit more detail later on. For now though, here’s a quick rundown of what I like and don’t like about the Kershaw Brawler.

Pros:

  • Tactical style
  • Affordable
  • Secure grip
  • Good overall performance

Cons:

 

  • Not in love with the Tanto blade
  • The oxide coating can wear off
  • Pocket clip is tight

Key Specs

 

Kershaw 1990 Brawler has a custom American Tanto style blade, with Speedsafe technology. The Brawler has a full length of 7.1 inches and a closed length of 4.1 inches. It has a quad mounted pocket clip so you can carry it comfortably in your pocket.

The handle is a little more than a half inch in width, .56 inches to be precise, which is a bit more than my other folding knives.  I tend to wear loose fitting jeans so it has been an issue for me yet. However, I could see this being a problem if you wear tighter jeans.

It weighs around 3.8 oz., similar knives like the Ontario Rat and Spyderco Tenacious are a bit lighter. But, I don’t mind the extra weight of the Brawler because it still feels good in my hand.

Underneath the FRN handle scales there is the stone washed liner. As expected, the knife employs liner locking mechanism.

One important thing to note about the Brawler, this knife is made in China. If you’re not into Chinese made knives, this obviously isn’t the knife for you.

Review

Blade Shape

 

 

As mentioned, the Kershaw Brawler has a tanto style blade. Tanto’s have never been my favorite blade style. Not from a cosmetic’s stand point, I do like the looks, but from a user stand point I prefer longer cutting edge belly.

But, because they haven’t been my preferred style, I haven’t bought many nor have a used them very much. Having now carried the Brawler for the past couple months I’ve been pleasantly surprised with this blade.

First thing I noticed is the tip is incredibly strong. The blade has a thick spine and it’s carried out to the tip. I was concerned that this blade wouldn’t be a great piercing knife, even though that is the purpose of this blade. I compared the Brawler’s Tanto with a drop point on a doubled up piece of cardboard.  The drop point pieced deeper, but the Tanto left a bigger would track.

I expected these results, the Tanto is originally designed to pierce armor and other tough materials. That is why a sturdy and thick point is necessary on this blade.

Blade Steel

 

The blade is made of 8Cr13MoV steel, a common and cheap tool grade metal used heavily in Chinese products. Many popular budget knives make use of this steel including Spyderco’s Tenacious, Persistence and Kershaw’s Cryo & Cryo 2.

Due to this steels less than stellar reputation for preventing corrosion, the blade is coated with a black oxide giving it a slick and tactical style finish.

Although 8Cr13M0v has some flaws, I find it to be a more than adequate blade steel for this type of budget edc knife. So while it may lack certain properties for edge retention and corrosion resistance, being a beater blade you can easily re-sharpen it when needed.

Handle

 

The handle is made up of glass filled nylon or fibre reinforced nylon (FRN). The scales have a mesh like textured design, I find the grip pretty comfortable in my hand and it believe it has the right amount of texture.

The handle is a bit thicker than other similar class knives, and I like it. The shape, thickness and some well placed gimping on the thumb ramp make the knife sit comfortable in my hand. I don’t think anybody would be unimpressed with the handle ergonomics of the Brawler.

The handle is also equipped with a quad carry pocket clip, pretty standard feature with most knives made from this material. It doesn’t take much to drill them so why not do it.

I do have a couple nit-picky issues with the pocket clip, it’s incredibly tight out of the box. You have to really work to get it broken in and loosed up. And tip-up carry is a little showy, I wish it sat a little deeper in the pocket.

Deployment

 

The Brawler is an assisted opening knife with a liner lock. The flipper also make its really easy to open the blade. A simple pull on the flipper and the Speedsafe whips the blade open and it locks into place with the liner lock.

The blade does have a dual thumb studs, but don’t get confused, these are technically blade stops.  You can certainly open the blade with the “thumb studs”, but I find it more difficult and always use the flipper.

I’ve never had a problem with liner locks and durability, I find them to be just as strong as the many other type of blade locks. One issue I do always have with liner locks, they are difficult to use with a gloved hand. You’ve either got to remove the glove or really get your finger in there to depress the liner.

Another thing I would like to mention, I’ve seen many knives in this price range that the blades do not center up in the linings. That leads me to believe there has to be some blade play. The blade on the Brawler is perfectly centered, whereas my Kershaw Cryo 2 is way off center. You can see the difference in the pictures below.

The blade aligns with the liner pretty efficiently upon deployment as well and I haven’t noticed any blade play on this knife as of yet. I’ve done some pretty heavy duty cutting with it also so this was pretty impressive to me.

Overall handling

 

Some would say a major fault in Chinese products are their durability. However, my experience with this knife over the past couple months, durability hasn’t been an issue all. I’ve said it before, but I don’t abuse my knives just to see what they can take. I use my knives for everyday tasks, same as anybody else would. Food prep, opening boxes or similar tasks.

I did do some more heavy duty cutting on thicker boxes for testing purposes for this review and the knife performed ok. It cut thought the boxes without issue early on, but did dull out a bit later on in the cutting tests.

I was able to restore the edge with just a little bit of work on a honing rod. So if you don’t overly damage the edge doing tasks not meant for this knife, it’ll perform well for you.

Competitors

Kershaw Freefall

The specifications of Freefall and Brawler are almost identical. The Freefall is actually a bit bigger than the Brawler though. The handle scale is textured with unique ‘K’ design. If one is interested in a slightly larger sized version of the Brawler with a stonewashed blade rather than the black oxide, you should look into the Freefall.

Kershaw Cryo

Cryo can be identified from a mile away with its distinct full metal body. It may actually be Kershaw’s most popular knife. It comes in 3 different models; the full metal drop point version, the blackwash drop point version and the blackwash Tanto version-most similar to the Brawler. The Cryo is smaller than the Brawler overall- both in the blade length and the fully deployed length. It is a bit heavier than the Brawler due to its full metal body. The blade itself is a bit arched against the straight edged Brawler.

If one is looking for a knife mostly for outdoor tasks, then the drop point blade of Cryo is hands down better than the Brawler. It is also more convenient to carry due to its reduced size. But if one wants a knife for day to day errands then Brawler is a winner for its reliability, feel and handling.

Ontario Rat 2

 

If you are looking for a knife that would be flexible enough to be an all-rounder then Rat would be your go-to knife. It is almost similar in many aspects with the Brawler. In contrast to Brawler, Ontario Rat can only be opened manually. The drop point blade of Rats is much more versatile than Brawler. The Rat feels almost the same as Brawler; even though the finger grooves in the handle of Rats give a much firm grip than the mechanical design of Brawler. Although, Brawler is by far the best in looks and style quotient.

So, the equation is clear. If you want a kick-butt foldable knife at your disposal, then Rat should be your choice; and if you are a black blade fanatic and want an overall performer, then Brawler is your go-to knife.

My opinion

So, would I recommend the Kershaw Brawler as an EDC folder? Absolutely I would, I believe it’s a great little budget EDC.

This knife does have its limitations and may not be everybody’s cup of tea. I find the knife to be incredibly durable for a Chinese made blade.  The thick blade spine and sturdy tip make piercing tough materials safe and easy.

But perhaps the best feature the Kershaw Brawler offers is the price, it’s a very affordable EDC and can fit most people’s budgets.

 

ESEE 5 review

I purchased this knife last April and I am just getting to really telling about how great this blade is. Since day 1 I have really done a number on this blade with numerous trips into the woods. For the last year, the ESEE 5 has been my primary knife because of just how versatile that it is. There isn’t a whole lot that it can’t do. I will get straight to the point, I am a big ESEE fan, so I am going to try to be unbiased as possible, but I am not so in love with the brand that I don’t appreciate other knife makers or blades.

Who uses it?

Normally, I would give a list of details and stats about this knife, but this knife is pretty well known, so I will skip over the boring stats. Here is the thing about an ESEE knife, they are a no-nonsense type of blade that is designed for hard use and abuse in a whole lot of different environments as possible from Amazon jungles to the deserts of Afghanistan. Their products are actually marketed towards military and law enforcement and most of their blades are made with specific military functions in mind.  Because of these reasons, it’s really popular with survivalists.

The test

The look and mods

ESEE blades look more like “tacti-cool” blades than practical knives but this couldn’t be further from the truth.  They do look “cool” but they’re also highly functional.  They have a modern look and feel to them, with the Micarta scales and the blade is powder coated black.  These knives make a great “blank”, it’s practically like a “blank” canvas, for those of us who appreciate modding and decorating our blades and making them more one of a kind to us. Some of the best looking non custom made blades I’ve seen are modded ESEEs.  There are a huge number of pictures out there of modded ESEE blades of different sorts, from the Candiru to the Junglas. Indeed, even with the current arrival of the JG3 close to a month or so back there have just been a few mods, particularly of the handle scales.

ESEE 5

 

The ESEE 5 was my first ESEE blade. After much angst of which ESEE to choose (they’re not cheap!), I chose the 5, and after a lot of usage, I’m sure I made the right decision. If I had a time machine, I would still purchase this blade again.  All things considered, is this blade for everyone?  My answer is no. I don’t have massive paw hands, however they’re not precisely little either – and I discover this blade extremely agreeable to hold and utilize.

ESEE 5 benefits

So what are the benefits of the ESEE 5 in respect to similar, alternate blades?

To begin with is its size, by which I mean its measurements, and the general ergonomics. By and by, I think the length/width/thickness proportion is flawlessly on point.  At precisely five inches in edge length, this blade is sufficiently short for great control and having your elbows locked in  yet it’s long enough and at 1/4 inch thick it’s sturdy enough to split even the hardest of logs for your fire.  It fits great in my hand but I can’t say if it will be comfortable if you have massive hands or small hands. 

The grind

The next thing to look at is the grind of the knife.  The grind is a saber grind.  Because the blade is so thick at a 1/4 inch and the blade is wide, it allows for long bevels which means it’s easier to with without losing any strength in the blade.  I know many of you don’t like batoning, but this knife batons easily. 

The cost

You get what you pay for and the cost of buying this blade is fair.  I don’t consider it to be overpriced at all.  The price incorporates the Kydex sheath with movable pressure screw, belt clasp, and mounting equipment – also the unconditional lifetime warranty.  I consider it to be great value for money because this knife will outlast you!  You can hand it down to your children if you wanted to and the knife would still be good.

Overall rating

There’s no such thing as 10/10 perfect but this blade comes close.  The blade is great, the ergonomics of the handle are great but I’m just not a fan of micarta.

(Natural News) For years, I’ve warned that humanity is a suicide cult which has engineered its own destruction by relentlessly poisoning the natural world with chemical pesticides, heavy metals and GMOs. Now, the collapse of living systems across the planet is accelerating like never before, with ocean fisheries collapsing by the day, topsoil vanishing by the inch, and wildlife populations being decimated by the accelerating destruction of habitat.

Humanity, it seems, has broken the planet, and the mass die-offs are now impossible to ignore. Adding even more weight to the horrifying realization that humanity is committing mass ecological suicide, a new study published in the science journal PLoS One has documented a 75 percent decline in insect biomass over rural Germany in just the last 27 years.

The study, authored by Caspar A. Hallmann and others, is entitled, “More than 75 percent decline over 27 years in total flying insect biomass in protected areas.”

The abstract of the study, which should be screaming alarm bells over the devastating collapse of the food chain in Europe, reports rather mildly:

Our analysis estimates a seasonal decline of 76%, and mid-summer decline of 82% in flying insect biomass over the 27 years of study. We show that this decline is apparent regardless of habitat type, while changes in weather, land use, and habitat characteristics cannot explain this overall decline. This yet unrecognized loss of insect biomass must be taken into account in evaluating declines in abundance of species depending on insects as a food source, and ecosystem functioning in the European landscape.

Even more concerning is the fact that this insect decline was observed in “protected areas” that are supposed to preserve and protect wildlife. As the study authors explain in their conclusion:

The widespread insect biomass decline is alarming, ever more so as all traps were placed in protected areas that are meant to preserve ecosystem functions and biodiversity… our results illustrate an ongoing and rapid decline in total amount of airborne insects active in space and time.

The food web is now collapsing… insects are just the beginning

The stunning news of this insect biomass collapse is, of course, just the beginning of a series of events that will ultimately spell doom for humanity unless causative factors are quickly reversed. Insects are the pillars of the food web, providing protein and nutrients to bats, birds and reptiles, among other animals. When the insect population collapses, nutrient depletion cascades up the food chain, causing devastating declines in populations of larger animals upon which ecological diversity depends.

As the study authors explain:

[The insect biomass collapse] must have cascading effects across trophic levels and numerous other ecosystem effects. There is an urgent need to uncover the causes of this decline, its geographical extent, and to understand the ramifications of the decline for ecosystems and ecosystem services.

Even more worrisome, insects are the pollinators that keep 80% of wild plants aliveby facilitating pollination. When insect populations collapse, pollination of wild food sources — as well as many domesticated food sources such as almonds — also face imminent collapse. Without insects, in other words, human populations will also collapse within just a few years as the ripple effect of insect die-offs works its way up the food chain.

Ruger 9mm P-series mag identification

A few years ago I came into a Ruger 9mm of some fashion. It was either a P89 or P95…I can’t recall. But the price was right and I thought it would be a good idea to have a cheap, disposable, quality handgun around. I went on GunBroker to see if I could pick up a few spare magazines. I wound up finding an auction for a lot of 11 factory magazines. As it turns out, I won the auction with a ridiculously low bid. So now I had one handgun and a dozen magazines. This is the part where I fall into the rabbit hole.

I figured since I had one handgun and a dozen magazines, it would make sense to get another handgun and allocate the magazines accordingly. Fast forward a few years and a dozen Rugers later…well… you know how that goes.

So, now I have all these Ruger P89/P95 handguns that take the same magazine. Convenient, but a little awkward as well since the Ruger P-series was never much of a barnburner in terms of popularity. Since I avoid non-factory mags whenever possible, I try to buy used Ruger-made mags. Here’s where it gets interesting. All of those double stack 9mm mags pretty much look alike. How do you you tell the Ruger factory mag from some crappo USA Brand or other sheet-metal abortion?

Well, having a stash of mags here for guidance, I’m going to provide you a quick tutorial, as I understand it, on identifying and distinguishing Ruger factory mags from the non-factory mags. For 99% of you, this post is worthless. But, for those who do like the P-series, you might find this useful.

Note that all the Ruger factory magazines have witness holes on the sides of the magazines.

P-series 9mm factory mags came in, basically, four styles:

  • Full-capacity, blued
  • Full-capacity, stainless
  • 10-rd capacity, blued
  • 10-rd capacity stainless

There were some oddball compact variants in the 9mm P-Series (P93, P94) but it appears they shared the same magazine.

All the 9mm P-series utilize an ambi mag release that puts the mag catch on the front of the magazine. If your mag doesn’t have a notch on the front of the magazine, it’s not for a P-series gun.

Ruger-made mags, as opposed to contract-made-for-Ruger mags, have a distinctive caliber marking stamped on them.

The easiest and fastest way to tell a Ruger P-series factory 9mm mag is by the baseplate. Most of them have a thick ‘bumper pad’-type baseplate. Some have the Ruger logo, some do not. Both are factory mags, however.

Since most aftermarket mags have a flush-fit unmarked baseplate, other identifying features need to be present to assure that the magazine is factory made.

Ten round magazines had a truncated metal body and then a plastic ‘spacer’ at the bottom of the magazine to give it the overall length of a full-capacity magazine. On some ten-round magazines there is a hole in the baseplate for a punch to allow disassembly of the magazine, other models of ten-round magazine do not allow disassembly and the plastic space is permanently fixed to the mag body by a roll pin going through the mag body and spacer.

Mec-Gar mags are identical to the Ruger non-basepad factory mags in virtually every regard. The Mec-Gar branded mags differ in finish and placement/number of witness holes. All the Ruger factory magazines I have observed have 3 or 4 witness holes on both sides of the magazine. The Mec-Gar do not. To the best of my knowledge, Ruger never offered any ‘extended capacity’ magazines for the P-series…all those 20-, 32-, and 40-rd magazines are aftermarket and probably of dubious reliability.

Factory 9mm P-series mag probably made under contract by Mec-Gar.

Factory mags get the highest marks for reliability, and the Mec-Gars are pretty much tied for that with the factory. Other brands such as ProMag have mixed reviews, and no one has anything nice to say about USA brand mags. For best results, I would recommend sticking with the factory mags, factory mags made by Mec-Gar, or Mec-Gar’s own version.

heres a question; is ONE atom of cesium137 per cell a concern? Can it do anything at all to speak of? Pretty sure it isnt radiating until it decays and then its a quick trip or two to barium stability. One atom.
According to an estimate made by engineers at Washington University, there are around 100,000,000,000,000 or 100 trillion atoms in a human cell. Could ONE atom of cesium do anything to disrupt 100 trillion atoms?
Its a key question, and one must know the answer to successfully argue against Woods Hole’s continued statement that Fukushima radiation is of no concern.

    …the amount of energy absorbed by a mass of cells is not what determines biological effect.
    What matters is the spacial concentration of ionizing events in relation to cellular molecular components hit.
    Internal emitters are densely ionizing.
    You know what this also means?
    The ICRP model is a FAILED model in relation to describing the effects of internally ingested LLR.
    The model has been myopically designed not to recognise the effects of low level radiological exposure, and only cancer and directly observable birth defects of living newborns, despite the a plethora of other illnesses may result from organic molecular damage.
    The evidence of numerous studies bears this out.

      I ask about one atom for a reason. Is one atom densely ionizing? I mean forget about low and high energy tracks…just the radiation from one atom. I would say no, its not a high density radiation source…its not doing much of anything until it cant take the unstable thoughts and then it goes to barium then stable, 90% of the time. One atom is not a constant source of becquerels
      If my little stab at it was correct, we are at a biologically significant dose of Cs137 with an average of one atom per cell. A near fatal dose is about 130 atoms per cell (whole body average). Compare to K-40; we have about six million radioactive potassium atoms (k-40) per cell! (unless I messed up the numbers!)
      This is the foundation that lets Beusseler say there is no harm from the fallout…”our radioactive ocean” is the Woods Hole and NOAA theme to placate the public
      The scientific and legal base is the ICRP dose model. You might guess I have some thoughts about this low dose conundrum

              I think its key to realize that just adding free radical de activators is not the be all and end all of why herbs and vit c and stuff can combat cancer from low level radiation. Gerson found that the cell voltage had to be high to combat cancer…but later research found that the intercellular communication that relies on the ion channels, the bioelectric fields has a primary role. Cancer isnt a single cell disease. Low level radiation is not a DNA double strand break problem for the most part. Added free radical load has an effect but what it is EXACTLY? It is the cascade of effects, resulting in a breakdown of intercellular communications which ultimately leads to a metasticized cancer.
              The fact that chitin and other endogenous material have this ion exchange property that bioaccumulates radiation of high specific activity seems like a VERY good line of research.
              You see, the high specific activity shouldnt come into play if the cesium is evenly distributed at the atomic level (not totally true, but for the point). One atom out of six million. But if the cesium accumulates into hot regions of fungi, or amino acid neurotransmitters, or parasites, then the inter-cellular communication system is disrupted. Kill the parasites, the fungi (not very easy!!), get the heavy metals out, fortify the body with its required nutrition and low level radiation will not have the cancerous effect

                I should say, one radioactive cesium atom out of six million radioactive potassium atoms in the cell…which has some 37 trillion atoms…how much harm can it do? As it turns out, this has been epidemiologically and even lab tested to have an effect. A very tiny shooter, put one radioactive decay into a cell and a systemic cellular response was observed. Moreover, if you take a cell that has been ‘hit’ by a track of fallout decay, and just take some of the fluid that the cell was in and transfer it to the fluid bathing other cells, there will be an effect. The other cells, untouched by radiation, may decide to commit suicide, so drastic is the communication note held in that fluid

            About six or so things are required for cancer…but they all relate to the essential health, integrity and communication of the cells. A healthy diet, exercise, a peaceful mind, herbs…these all over-ride, to a large extent, the ‘stochastic’ nature of low level radiation.

                radiobiology recognizes two types of pertinent cell communications systems that influence radiation toxicity. ‘short range Gap Junctional Intercellular Communication and long range Distant Cell Signaling Intercellular Communication, mediated by soluble transmissible factors and propagated by Brownian active or passive diffusive motion.’
                In typical biological scientist mind set, they find the tinker toy bits (phosphorylation of connexin43 protein for gap junction signalling, secretions of TGF-β, interleukin-8, serotonin and others), but they miss the energy field effect. Studies show that small modifications of the bioelectric field can produce wild deformations, or promote tissue and limb re-generation and also cure cancer.
                The essential idea is that the ICRP model with its single DNA strand hit does not fit observed reality. Meanwhile, radiation dose from fallout is very low and scientists cant for the life of them grasp how it could do anything. But the combination of low level radiation that is bioconcentrated at the cell surface, or ‘bridging’ several cells by say fungal hyphae brings a new plausible theory of low level fallout toxicity

                Yeah fair enough, I did forget about distance there.
                I find it interesting that you are fighting against excess energy/time though.
                So like, unsuitable excess energy, over time but also divided by distance? Vaguely speaking, I mean, we’d have to consider lymphatic/lymphocytic function, energy transfer mechanisms (glutamine/atp/atm, etc), additional supporting “sources”, all kinds of shit.
                Like I still got this theory that “gravity” is an inherent property/function of matter. Like, it doesn’t move, so it moves things.
                And I get this feeling “space” isn’t space, but more like a voronoi diagram (but like a gauss field, roughly speaking, I was reminded of SVD or something?), so there’s no…empty stuff, it’s just that density or energy to mass ratio is variable.

              Gabriel Cousens is good…I havent read Ochiai.
              What Im suggesting is a new idea; a synergic effect of low level nuke fallout that is bioconcentrated onto internal chitinous organisms or amino acids.
              For example, Dr Clark and Dr Simoncini see a direct relationship of fungus or parasites and cancer. Simoncini didnt go for the acid pH theory, or other holistic concepts. They both have clinical experience. If you kill the fungus and the cancer goes away, can you blame your dose of Fukushima radiation? Can you use this to debate with Beusseler or condemn the nuclear cartel?
              You see, cancer is on the rise concurrent with low level fallout. Why are some stricken with cancer from fallout while others are not? Simoncinis fungus or Clarks flukes and tape worms?

                Thats what we need to answer the question left above by Beusseler et al; how can they say fukushima is of no concern while the whole ocean is going belly up?

                CS, here’s an even simpler question. Let’s do this all scientific-like, life expectancy and k-40 accumulation. Yeah I ain’t no fan of cs-137. But this is all conflation, most people these days live longer than they used to, not saying anything about quality of life or anything like, just citing historical evidence.
                So like, even more k-40, even more cs-137, yet people are living longer. In a stochastic, average means sort of sense. Without citing the very unscientific bible, try and argue that.

                Heres a real fundamental question;
                The question is this; How dangerous is that fallout along the beach compared to the background radiation?
                Woods Hole says that nuke fallout at 20,000 bq/m3 is no concern. They say its approximately twice as dangerous as background which isnt hardly dangerous.
                Now its obvious you must know two things;
                A) how toxic the fallout is and
                B) how toxic the background is
                Most people dont realize they dont know either one. No study can be found for cesium 137 or K-40 toxicity on humans. They extrapolate and guess, based on some bomb victims, a few accidents and some gruesome dog injections

                Think about this CS, try an integral. Yeah yeah, I’m just making shit up.
                So let’s say you take all existing organisms, well okay, you can’t do that. But let’s say you consider the total mass/k-40 ratio vs life expectancy, let’s say you then compare this in modern times (no, no remember, there’s an awful lot of predetermined death in industry, so that’s not exactly worth consideration).
                As a pro-nuker I would say that cs-137 correlates quite well with increased human life expectancy, further, I would suggest k-40 is quite necessary for death.

                the ratio of Cs-137 to K-40 200 million years ago is more or less known. There was hardly any Cs137 but there was a slightly higher level of K-40. But thats not the question…we want to know the ratio of toxicity per becquerel. We want the nuke industry to know it, the scientists to know it
                I have a tentative ballpark figure;
                Codes new potassium40 dose coefficient;
                K-40 = 0.013 nSv/Bq.
                Cs-137= 65 nSv/Bq
                thus the ratio of toxicity per becquerel of Cs137 to K40 is about 5000
                that is in contrast to Woods et al who say the ratio is closer to 1 and thus the stamp of safety to the deadly Fukushima disaster

                what is the value of knowing primordial radioactivity? For one thing, it gives a hint at how toxic or perhaps even useful background radiation might be to life.
                Regarding Cs137, since there were no constant generators of it, and it has a relatively short life, we can assume the level in pre history was close to zero.
                I estimate the level of K-40 radioactivity in proto cells at the beginning of life contained 1.25 million becquerels per cubic meter

Herbal remedies, You might be doing them wrong.

I’ve been using herbs all my life, as most of you have. Herbs are such a big part of our life we actually don’t think about them most the time. But the herbs I want talk to you about today deal with our healthcare.

Because of the rising cost in healthcare, or the man-made medicines that people don’t trust, or many other reasons, natural remedies are making a comeback.

One can get overwhelmed with the amount of natural remedies out there on the market. Most people would like to be able to raise their own herbs to treat their families. And for some people such as myself, gathering wild herbs is not only fun, but also very cost-effective.

The largest problem I see with herbal remedies is people trying to gather too many herbs. Instead of gathering 100 herbs to treat one ailment each, I suggest focusing on 10 to 20 herbs to treat multiple symptoms.

Knowing your own body and the loved ones you intend to treat, should come before any herbs are gathered. Finding what herbs work for you and your symptoms, is going to be trial and error that only you can do. Just because someone says some herb is a good one to use, does not mean that you are not allergic to it, or said herb will not respond to your body’s needs.

I do not believe that there is a list of herbs that everyone must have, or even one herb that everyone should use. Everyone’s body is different, what herbs works for me, may not work for you. Your herbal remedies should be very personal.

I’m going to give you one example of an herb that is very pronounced across the world. It is used for a food crop for both animals and humans. It is simple to gather, is probably in your yard, and most people overlook this herb.

Clover is nutritious and relatively high in protein content. Some Clover are high in vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, chromium, phosphorous, potassium, niacin, and the list goes on.

Some of the common uses and health benefits of clover are:

White and red clovers are considered to be blood purifiers. Thus, they can be used to promote the health of the liver and the digestive system.

White clover is also sought after for its effectiveness in healing respiratory ailments. A tea brewed from young clover leaves and blossoms is said to be a good expectorant and reduces the spasm brought on by whooping cough. It is believed to be anti-asthmatic in nature.

The phytoestrogens in red clover account for its popularity as a natural remedy to alleviate menopausal symptoms.

Being a rich source of many minerals, clover is believed to aid in the proper hormonal functioning of the glands in the human body.

The calcium and magnesium content in clover help to relax the nervous system.

Clover is also believed to promote flow of lymph and improve the immunity of the body.

Clover is considered to be a diuretic and thus reduces inflammation in cases of gout. Owing to its alterative and antispasmodic properties, red clover promotes muscle relaxation and can allay cramps and aches. White clover is also considered to be effective in reducing inflammations due to arthritis. It also decongests the salivary glands and reduces ocular inflammations.

Clover is said to be beneficial in treating skin disorders like psoriasis and eczema. In fact, red clover plant is often used for the treatment of various skin ailments.

Clover is said to be a cancer-fighting agent and finds use in alternative medicine for the management of certain cancers such as breast and ovarian cancer and other chronic degenerative diseases.

Red clover is rich in coumarins that are chemical compounds with anti-coagulant properties. Hence, this herb offers protection against heart disease. It thins the blood and does not allow plaque to build up on the walls of the arteries.

Warnings:
Headaches, nausea, and fatigue are some general side effects caused due to excess consumption of clover. Its high concentration of estrogen can also upset hormonal balance in women. Any medication using this herb needs to be administered under the supervision of a medical practitioner.

As I said before, your herbal remedies have to be very personal. As you can read by the list above, Clover as one herb has a multitude of uses.

Will some or all of those uses work for you? This is something only you as an individual, can find out. Some herbs will work better for you than others for different ailments.

Imagine waking up in the middle of the night hearing emergency sirens. In confusion, you get out of bed and peek out the window. You don’t see anything and brush it off as an emergency that’s taking place far away from the comfort of your home. So, you climb back in bed and boom! Your eyes open wide in disbelief as you start to feel your home move from side-to-side vigorously. The kids start to scream in panic, and you jump to your feet rushing to their bedrooms, grabbing them one-by-one. As you try to find a safe place for you and your kids to hide in your home, the residue from the ceiling starts to fall. To make matters worse, the windows begin to crack, and light structures outside of your home have gone out, leaving the neighborhood in complete darkness.

 

Aside from being woken up from your sleep in a panic, phone towers are down, so it’s nearly impossible to call for assistance. You finally manage to collect your thoughts and realize that this is an earthquake, a big one at that. Perhaps the worst part, however, is that you never thought this day would come, which is exactly why you never took the time to prepare for this natural disaster.

 

The truth is, we should all prepare for emergencies, especially families. Which is why creating a family emergency kit is essential to a successful emergency preparedness plan. Despite being highly emphasized by multiple organizations, most of us would agree that our homes aren’t equipped enough to survive a disaster; and because of this, people could suffer catastrophic losses and be totally blindsided by an unexpected earthquake, flood, hurricane, tornado, or man-made disaster.

 

Preparing for the Worst & Creating a Family Emergency Plan

 

Sign Yourself Up for Emergency Alerts: Although this would have been difficult task three decades ago, technology has made it a lot easier for us to prepare for disasters. This is due to the fact that technology has helped pave a way for users to communicate with one another easily and globally. Platforms like social media, the news, television, and blog post, are all great ways you can stay up to date before, during, and after a disaster strikes near you. Furthermore, public safety officials will also do their part in keeping you and your family up to date, alerting everyone when it’s safe to return home, and when it’s safe for residents to evacuate. You can typically count on constant news being reported every 3 to 5 minutes, depending on how serious the situation is.

 

Build a Kit & Know How to Properly Use It: According to Power Scout, the average daily electricity consumption of an American household is approximately 30 kilowatt-hours (kWh). Which means if your family’s left without power after a disaster and you aren’t prepared, trying to find an alternative power source likely won’t happen.

 

So, you see, being prepared for a disaster means having all the right tools near you just in case of an unexpected emergency. That’s why it’s important to keep your emergency supplies in an easy-to-carry supply kit. One that allows you and your family to use it at home or on the road in case you’re forced to leave the comfort of your living environment. The question, however, is “What all should be in an emergency kit?” and truthfully, it varies depending on the size of the family, special needs, accessibility and/or resources.

 

Generally speaking, though, a supply kit should have the following:

 

  • Flashlight
  • Water
  • Canned food
  • Medical supplies (Like extra asthma pump inhalers, bandages, alcohol wipes etc.).
  • Cash
  • Birth certificates, passports, and social security cards.
  • Radio
  • Games & fun activities

 

Make Sure Your Kids Are Well Informed: As parents, teachers, child caregivers, friends, and neighbors, you hope emergencies and disasters never happen, especially around little ones. But trying to shelter children from the world during a disaster could do more harm than good.

 

When it comes to natural disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and wildfires, it’s important to remember that children handle each situation differently. In other words, they’re much more likely to get sick or injured during a disaster like earthquakes. Their bodies are smaller, thinner, and much more fragile, making them more susceptible to bodily harm after a disaster than most adults. That’s why it’s important to communicate to your child, and let them know what’s going in the world around them.

 

Take Emergency Training Classes (If Possible): Right now there are countless nurses out there in the world who are responding to crisis situations around the world. But what if there isn’t a nurse near you after an unexpected emergency? Well, that’s when your parenting expertise kicks in. Every parent fears the unknown when it comes to their child. That’s why being able to identify and treat certain injuries, symptoms, and markings is vital. Remember, kids don’t like to stay put and enjoy roaming around, even after a disaster hit. They’re essentially fearless, which means that they can come in contact with something deadly and think nothing of it. However, knowing how to treat minor injuries, and how to prepare your child for the world around them can make a difference in their judgment. If possible, consider getting CPR & First Aid certified.

 

In the end, you should include your neighbors and other relatives in your disaster plans. Let them all know what you’re doing to keep your family safe and show them certain designated meeting locations just in case communication fails and of course, encourage them to design their own plans. No matter what the emergency may be, it’s better to be an overachiever than underprepared.

10 Uncommon Ways To Generate Electricity For Your Homestead

Did you know that there are some very simple ways to generate electricity that won’t cost a fortune? All you have to do is to keep to the basics of using something that spins a magnet to induce a flow of electrons through a metal coil.

In fact, if you focus on smaller scale designs and look around your home, you won’t believe how many junk items you have on hand that can easily generate 12 volts of electricity with just a little bit of modification.

If you build one system at a time and harness them together, you are able to power an entire household.

CDs

Since CDs are light weight and durable, they can act as a basis for spinning magnets in many different systems. 

Here are just a few to consider:

  • CDs can be used to make Tesla Turbines that run on the flow of air or water. Just add magnets to either side of the turbine and make sure you have coils nearby that will produce electricity.
  • CDs are also easy to cut into a number of shapes. They can be used to make small fan blades that will turn small motors into wind turbines.
  • While you are looking at wind power systems, there are many new vertical blade, shell, and bladeless designs that are very efficient and will also work well for turning small motors. Since CDs are made from plastic, you can easily heat up parts of them to bend into different shapes as well as cut them into any form that you need. Here are some parts you should always set aside and then test out to see if they still work:

Capacitors

Ceramic disc, electrolytic, or film capacitors, they can all be used to store up electricity in a circuit and help streamline the output of your system. You should also make it a point to look for variable capacitors since they can be very useful for testing and fine tuning your devices.

Remember you can also make your own bottle capacitors.

Resistors

It may seem counter-intuitive, there are times when you will want to halt the flow of electricity through a circuit, or even redirect it.  Resistors are very important for controlling the flow of electricity so that you can protect other parts of the circuit and achieve your goals.

Diodes

Very important for controlling the flow of electricity through a circuit.

Transistors

They are essential for building control circuits as well as for boosting electricity output.

Relays

Capacitors can build up charges and discharge at predictable rates, but you may also need relays to trigger a change in a circuit path. You may not use them directly in generating power, but you’ll need relays as part of the interface that joins together diverse power generating sources so that you can run larger appliances or even your entire household.

Switches

Overall, you may not think small device switches are worth saving. Maybe you won’t focus on larger sized devices, while the smaller ones may still be useful for smaller boards that need special control for one reason or another.

Remember that safety is an important part of any power generating system. You should always be able to quickly, efficiently, and safely shut down any module in the system without harming yourself, the equipment, or anything attached to it. Switches are necessary for that purpose.

Fuses

As with switches, there is no way to substitute for well placed fuses on your circuit boards and within the power generating systems. Whether you make a mistake or a short occurs, fuses can truly save your life and also prevent your equipment from being ruined.

Do not try to cut corners and bypass fuses or leave them out of your designs.

The Board Itself

Even though each board may have a specific purpose, you can still use the pathways to take the place of wires. Just make sure that you know how to cut into the board to block off pathways that you have no intention of using.

If you do not have wires, but do have several small parts, this may be the most viable way to connect them together.

Computer Hard Drives

Many modern computers have “solid state” drives, but you can still get old junk computer parts that include hard drives featuring motors and solid metal disks inside. Aside from being fun to take apart, they are also a treasure trove for anyone looking for parts to generate electricity with.

Here are three parts you should aim to save:

  • The circuit board – there are many components that you will find useful. I wouldn’t personally recommend wasting time with the IC chips, but you could set them aside for other uses.
  • The motor – old hard drive motors are designed to spin heavy metal disks for hours on end at very high speeds. If you can get a good running motor, you could find a way to reverse it so that it will put electricity out instead of use it.
  • The metal plates – heavier plates are perfect for Tesla Turbines that will spin at higher speeds. They can also be stacked together and will not break apart as quickly as plastic CD versions.

Bicycles and Other Pedal Devices

Overall, you will find that bicycles are some of the most common devices used to generate electricity. All you need to do is make them stationary, and then attach a motor that is capable of producing electricity.

You can also use mini exercise bikes or anything else with pedals that work in the same way as bicycle pedals.

Aside from using a motor, do not forget that you can also use pedals to turn CD based turbine blades or just about anything else you can attach a magnet to.

Appliance Motors

Computer hard drives are just one kind of household appliance that offers motors that may be of use to you. Blenders, food processors, can openers, and many other devices can be used to generate electricity as long as you have something to spin them with.

As with computer hard drive motors, you’ll also need to build rectifiers so that you can take the output and turn it into what you need to power other items.  If the device in question also has a power board connected to the motor, you could use it as part of the power conversion system.

When using appliance motors to generate electricity, remember how fast they normally spin, as well as the amount of load they can take. Some motors can rotate thousands of times per minute, others cannot.

If you exceed this speed or try to put too much weight on the motor, you may burn it out or wear it out faster than expected. Even though you may have a large supply of motors on-hand, learn how to preserve them and avoid ruining them so that you can make them last as long as possible in a time of need.

Fans

Whether you are looking at small battery powered fans or box sized fans, the motors and blades can be very useful for generating electricity. These motors are durable and designed to run for hours on end without overheating or needing maintenance.

If you are looking for systems that will generate larger amounts of electricity at one time, then box fan motors will work much better than hard drives or small appliance motors.

In addition, if you want a fast, easy way to get started with testing coils, a battery operated personal desk fan may be a good place. Just add some magnets to the blades, and then build your coils. Even though you will still need to power the fan with electricity, you can still use the blades to induce current in a coil.

Household Trash

Unlike other power generation methods, you will need to convert the trash into something else before you can use it to generate electricity.  There are four basic methods that you can use:

  • The simplest, and least efficient method is to burn the trash to produce heat. 15 Amazing Health Benefits Of Turmeric

I’m always looking for natural healing remedies, let me tell you what I learned about turmeric. This is an organic spice I purchased at a local store. It tastes very similar to curry, but maybe not as strong. It is used to flavor and to color curry products. It is a perennial in the ginger family that grows in Southeast Asia and requires a lot of annual rainfall for it to thrive. It’s a substance with powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidants properties. Turmeric is a spice that comes from the turmeric plant.

The root of turmeric is used to make medicine and contains a yellow-colored chemical called curcumin. Curcumin is used to color foods and some cosmetics. Please keep in mind, I’m not a doctor, nurse or anyone in the medical field. I’m sharing what I have researched about turmeric with you. You need to decide if this is right for you or your family. If you are pregnant or nursing your baby, again, please consult with your doctor. Cooking or drinks made with it are generally considered safe. When in doubt just ask your medical physician.

I use a Keurig to heat my reverse osmosis water in the morning, thanks to my daughter for gifting me one. In the old days, I had a bright cherry red tea kettle. This is the green tea I love to drink: Organic Green Tea. After I heat up the water in the Keurig, I add a green tea bag, a sprinkle of turmeric, and some honey. Some days I add a little cinnamon. They are all natural remedies in their own way. Life is good when we use natural products.

I have extremely bad arthritis, so I’m always on the lookout for natural anti-inflammatory products. I have friends with diabetes, autoimmune diseases, and other ailments. I research 24/7 for natural remedies because I want to know more than what the doctors tell me about prescriptions. I believe some prescriptions, notice I said some prescriptions, are toxic.

I get the giggles sometimes when I see pharmaceutical companies pushing their drugs on TV commercials and life looks so blissful, happy, and then they drop the bomb with the possible side effects. I’m not laughing if these happen to people but, I say to Mark jokingly, “yep, that’s a prescription I want to try, nope, nada.” I hope you get the picture of what I’m saying, I want to try natural remedies before I plunge into chemicals that the FDA has approved for today, and may pull from the market in a couple of years from now.

I sprinkle a turmeric, cinnamon, and pepper in my morning hot drinks. Sometimes, I add turmeric to my smoothies. When you have pain you will try anything that is natural. Please check with your health provider before you try turmeric, let’s make sure it won’t conflict with some of your prescriptions or health issues.

Some people actually rub a little turmeric on their skin for pain, sprains or swellings. I use Deep Blue from DoTerra so I will keep using that product. I also read it possibly helps with high cholesterol by lowering LDL or the “bad” cholesterol. Another note, turmeric may possibly lower your triglycerides.

When I first heard about turmeric I looked at the containers and I wanted to smell it, you know so I didn’t waste my money if I didn’t like what I smelled. No, I didn’t smell it, but I wanted to see if I could add it my drinks, etc. I gambled and purchased two bottles. I’m so glad I did.

If you have used this for cholesterol, please let me know if it lowered your numbers. I want to use it for three full months before I get my cholesterol checked again. I have seen the product sold as tablets, but I opted for the powdered spice.

Thanks again for being prepared for the unexpected. Please look into natural remedies because we need to have options besides big pharma. I looked at the Doterra website for a turmeric essential oil, but I didn’t see one. I did see some on Amazon, but I can’t recommend them unless I have tried them. May God bless this world.
