Anyone who’s been gardening for a while is familiar with the dreaded fusarium wilt. Also called damping off, this fungal disease causes newly-sprouted seedling stems to collapse. It’s frustrating, but it’s certainly not unknown. But did you know that fusarium itself is a widespread genus of multiple species which can also cause a number of … Read more

Col Grossman is one of the few modern warriors that has done any substantial research into the mental aspects of the use of force. He discusses what PTSD is, some information on how to deal with it, the flight or flight response, survival breathing techniques to reduce stress during lethal encounters, and much much more… When I began learning how to shoot defensively this book was one I read over and

Big All-In-One Multitool?

Click here to view the original post.

Dear Ferfal,

I like reading your posts. It’s because they are sensible, practical and guided by real-world experiences.

I recently came across a Multi-tool that packs in a lot of essentials and is now in Kickstarter – https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1349260918/combartm-an-incredibly-rugged-heavy-duty-multi-too?ref=checkout_rewards_page.

Unlike stuff like the Leatherman (Got a Wave based on your recommendation), I get the feeling that big essentials are best separate so as to be good at their job – rather than have a single tool trying to do it all.

What do you think about this development?

Cheers,

-Vivek

.

Thanks for your email, Vivek.

Man, you put me in that position. I do respect my readers greatly so I’ll give you an answer.

Honest opinions sometimes get people upset tough. I know someone involved in the design and creation of this tool will end up reading this and will quickly reply with some angry email.

Keep in mind it’s nothing personal.

My opinion? I agree with you 100%. Too much of a gimmick. Its big, bulky and weights 3.2 pounds. The Becker BK9 is a 9 inch heavy duty knife, 1095 Cro-Van steel and weights 1.05 pounds. Sure, its not a shovel, or a hammer or a saw, but it does excel as a big knife, which is by far the most important tool you need for outdoors survival, and it can chop anything that tool can. You can also pry, dig and hammer with a good big blade like that and it costs $89.99 vs $359.

Ka-Bar Becker BK9 Combat Bowie Fixed Blade Knife

Ka-Bar Becker BK9 Combat Bowie Fixed Blade Knife $92.99

If I need a spade type mutitool then guess what, the military already invented that, its called an Entrenching tool or E-tool. Its an actual mil-spec, proven tool and you can get one for 40 bucks or so. It’s clearly a better spade, probably chops and hammers just as well too and does so at about 2.5 pounds. If a saw is something you really want, then the Glock etool comes with one in the handle.

Gerber E-Tool Folding Spade, Serrated Edge [30-000075]

Gerber E-Tool Folding Spade, Serrated Edge $ 43.99

You mention buying a Leatherman Wave based on my recommendations. You probably know how well the saw in that tool works, as does the folding knife. Its not a spade or an axe but then again it comfortably fits in your pocket! I’ve used the blade in my Charge and Wave plenty and it always gets the job done, and the saw is just great. I’ve used it to cut 2” branches and 2x4s many times.

This tool seems like the answer to a question no one ever wanted.

If I want a handy jack of all trades and master of none tool then I just carry a multitool in my pocket, like I’ve been doing for years. I could never have that thing with my all day, 24/7.

“But its for the great outdoors…”

Ok, if I’m going to the great outdoors I always make sure I have a good large knife.

“But the spade and hammer and axe…”

During an emergency I can dig, chop and hammer with a good blade. If I need more than that and I’m already driving around in a pick up truck, then why exactly don’t I have with me dedicated tools? If I’m a survivalist heading to the wild, why don’t I have a hatchet or etool? I keep one of these in my vehicle survival kit along with a good knife, multitool, tool box and hammer. Why would I carry this big all-in-one in my car over cheaper, better, dedicated tools?

Hope that answered your question.

“Forced Bias Testing” Latest Demands From NAACP

Click here to view the original post.
Forced bias testing Demanding Forced Bias Testing And Training

Forced bias testing? Bias testing is so subjective and arbitrary that it becomes impossible to be biased against evil.

Forced bias testing? Efforts to prevent societal and cultural bias are the newest and most dangerous threats to privacy: Forced bias training. The president of one of the nation’s most influential agitation organizations wants every American to be tested for “bias.”In true Orwellian form, the NAACP is now demanding forced bias testing and training.

“Everyone should get tested for implicit bias, and if you’re a public official or receiving public dollars it should be mandatory,” National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) President Derrick Johnson wrote in a USA Today op-ed. It’s hard for many Americans to believe that the NAACP demanding forced bias testing and training is real.

Johnson would like everybody to take a psychological examination for bias called the Harvard Implicit Association Test (IAT). Those who test positive for “implicit biases” such as racial or religious prejudices, would have to undergo “bias training” to become better citizens.

NAACP President Wants Mandatory Bias Testing The IAT questions takers on attitudes towards different kinds of people such as blacks, gays, fat people, fast-food workers, etc., and stereotypes. Those who give the wrong answers are officially declared biased and Johnson would like them to undergo training.

Testing for bias would be an obvious threat to privacy as answers to bias tests would end up in public databases where anybody can access them. Potential employers, government agencies, law enforcement, prosecutors, landlords, lenders, the media, hackers, fraudsters, and blackmailers might have access to the bias information.

Individuals would automatically be blacklisted as bigots, racists, fataphobics or homophobic because they gave the wrong answer on a test. To make matters worse, new forms of bias can be concocted “on demand” to shape public opinion as needed by the American Politburo.

Bias Training Ends Up Promoting Bigotry

Disturbingly, there are no agreed-upon standards or benchmarks for such training. Further, there is no evidence that the bias tests or training would actually have any meaning even if an agreed upon bias standard were found.

Calvin K. Lai, a professor of psychological and brain sciences at Washington University pointed out the inconsistencies, “Some bias training consists of nothing but a PowerPoint slide presentation, Lai noted. There is not even a standard format for bias training.”

To make matters more complicated yet, there is evidence that some bias training might make prejudice worse. Some research indicates that testing for “widespread bias” makes bigots more likely to discriminate and less likely to be more tolerant. One scientific study found that diversity training reinforced prejudices.

Despite the lack of scientific evidence or any moral validation regarding bias testing, Johnson wants it applied to all Americans anyway. At least one Fortune 500 Company is going along with Johnson’s suggestion.

Not surprisingly, Starbucks is scheduled to close more than 8,000 stores nationwide on May 29, so its employees can undergo anti-bias, bias training, The New York Times reported. The Times did not say whether the training is mandatory or if it would include testing like the IAT.

Bias Testing Is A Huge Threat To Privacy

Americans might soon have to surrender their privacy completely and reveal all their opinions, simply to get a job. Those who express unpopular or politically incorrect views will be excluded from jobs, education, or housing. The Soviets had similar policies.

The NAACP’s bias testing and training suggestion are also reminiscent of China’s national “social-credit” system, in which citizens are ranked by behavior. Those who score low on “social credit” can be excluded from jobs, loans, and even plane and train tickets, Foreign Policy reported. The level of “social credit” is determined by good behaviors such as charitable donations to the right politically correct organizations, volunteering to do government work, and obedience to government officials. In this hell on earth, it will never be possible for the average person to understand, let alone comply with thought-police legislation.

Ironically, the NAACP, a group that fancies itself as a friend to freedom, is demanding testing and training that will lead to new kinds of bigotry and oppression.

Bias training poses a grave threat to privacy and freedom of expression. You have to wonder if Americans will be able to be “biased” against evil in the future. Seriously, will it actually be illegal to be biased against rapists, murderers and thieves? Do you think the NAACP understands the full ramifications of testing like this? How in their right minds can the NAACP demand forced bias testing and training?

New York Governor Depriving Gun Owners of First Amendment Rights

Click here to view the original post.
Guns Owners

Gun Owners Know Our Country’s Founders Would Turn Over In Their Graves.

New York State’s Democratic Governor is depriving gun owners of their First Amendment rights by canceling insurance policies an NRA lawsuit alleged. The suit claims Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered state regulators to prosecute companies that issued insurance to New York gun owners.

“Directed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, this campaign involves selective prosecution, backroom exhortations, and public threats with a singular goal – to deprive the NRA and its constituents of their First Amendment right to speak freely about gun-related issues and defend the Second Amendment,” a complaint filed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) on May 11, alleges.

The suit was filed after three companies; Chubb, Lockton Companies and Lloyd’s of London, canceled NRA Carry Guard policies – which cover legal costs for gun owners involved in self-defense shootings. The policies were canceled after the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) investigated and sued the companies.

New York State tried to Force Companies to Stop Doing Business with NRA

“The foundation of Defendants’ selective-enforcement and retaliation campaign is a series of threats to financial institutions that DFS will exercise its extensive regulatory power against entities that fail to sever ties with the NRA,” the lawsuit complaint charges. “To effect their sweeping agenda; Defendants issued public demands that put DFS-regulated institutions on notice to “discontinue their arrangements with the NRA” and other “gun promotion organisations” if they planned to do business in New York.”

The defendants in the suit include; Cuomo, the DFS, and DFS head Maria T. Vullo. The DFS claimed that the insurers had broken state law by offering the Cover Guard policies.

Bloomberg used State Agency to attack NRA, Lawsuit alleges

Another NRA lawsuit alleged that the DFS investigated the Lockton Companies at the behest of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s gun-control group Everytown for Gun Safety, Blomberg reported.

Lockton; which was fined $7 million by the DFS, agreed to cancel 680 Carry Guard policies in a settlement. Lockton violated a contract to offer the policies through 2024, the NRA lawsuit claims. The NRA’s complaint in that suit alleges that the DSF is engaged in “a politically-motivated effort to deprive NRA members of insurance coverage.”

Two other companies that issued Carry-Guard insurance in New York State were targeted and fined by the DFS, news reports indicate. Both of those companies; Lloyd’s of London and Chubb, canceled the policies.

The famous British brokerage Lloyd’s of London ordered syndicates that underwrite policies through its insurance market to stop covering insurance programs associated with the NRA on May 9, Business Insurancereported. Lloyds paid $1.3 million to settle charges brought against it by the DFS.

Illinois Union, a subsidiary of Chubb, paid a $1.3 million fine and cancelled Carry Guard policies issued to New York State residents, Insurance Journalreported. News reports did say whether the NRA plans to sue Chubb or Lloyd’s.

Gun Controllers accuse NRA of selling Murder Insurance

Cuomo and the DFS’s actions might have been motivated by a website called “Stop Murder Insurance.” The website, created by two groups called Color of Change and Guns Down, charges that Carry Guard protects murderers; and specifically mentions Chubb and Lockton, but not Lloyd’s.

Cuomo’s real motivation might have nothing to do with gun control. The governor is facing reelection this fall and needs to mobilize anti-gun Democratic voters. Cuomo and Stop Murder Insurance are trying to mobilize African-American voters by blaming the 2012 Trayvon Martin shootingon the NRA.

The governor needs all the votes he can get, because of a strong Democratic primary challenge from Sex in the Cityactress Cynthia Nixon. Politics it seems is the real threat to gun owners’ First and Second Amendment Rights.

Gun owners had better register and vote this fall, because Democrats are targeting them. Gun owners in other states had better watch out because Democrats are likely to try similar tactics all over the nation.

The result of this new obsession is that I’ve been focusing on getting healthier and developing healthy skincare habits. I’ve been paying closer attention to not only what goes into my body, but what goes on it.

Dr. Jacob’s Naturals is a company that offers a line of products designed to help you take your skincare regime to the next level. In order to facilitate this review, I received three products:

  • Almond Honey Liquid Castile Soap
  • Lavender Castile Liquid Soap
  • Lavendar Bar Soap
I’m going to admit that the first thing I noticed about these products was the scent. If you like essential oils or just lavender in general, you’ll be in love. I chose to gift the bar soap to my mother. She loves lavender and was very pleased with the bar soap. She also has sensitive skin, so she appreciated this particular soap.
We’ve been using the liquid soap at home and I’ve been quite pleased. It leaves my hands feeling clean, but soft and refreshed. There’s no dry skin here!

What are the signs of a tornado? How do you know when a tornado is forming or approaching? Here are 10 signs that a tornado may be imminent: (UPDATED)   1. The Cloud Base is actually rotating (EVEN IF SLOWLY). Look at the bottom of the cloud base which normally would just be gliding along. 2. A Wall Cloud, a large lowering cloud formation. Look for a lowering of the storm cloud base to what is called a wall cloud. This is a potential tornado sign. 3. Whirling dust debris above the ground (similar to a ‘dust devil’ but bigger).

The Rise Of Superbugs And ‘Nightmare Bacteria’ And How You Can Stay Healthy

Click here to view the original post.

“Nightmare bacteria” with unusual resistance to antibiotics of last resort were found more than 200 times in the United States last year in a first-of-its-kind hunt to see how much of a threat these rare cases have become. It’s also important to realize that there are steps that can be taken to help stem the evolution of these superbugs and remain healthy.

The pipes of hospitals carrying away the infections of the sick are bound to be quite disturbing places, however, scientists dared to snoop around in them anyway and found that they can fuel superbugs: antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The Centers for Disease Control even announced that they found 200 types of antibiotic-resistant bacteria lurking around – and hospitals seem to be the perfect breeding grounds.

The genetic building blocks for antibiotic resistance intermingle freely in the pipes connected to the hospital rooms of those who are sick with viruses and bacterial infections, according to a study published in the journal mBio. That DNA can give superbugs the power to defeat modern medicines and threaten the lives of other patients.

In a new study, published by The American Society for Microbiologyscientists determined that antibiotic-resistant bacteria are bred in the plumbing of hospitals. The study, titled Genomic Analysis of Hospital Plumbing Reveals Diverse Reservoir of Bacterial Plasmids Conferring Carbapenem Resistance found that even when hospitals themselves are impeccably clean of infectious bacteria and viruses, the pipes that carry away those micro-organisms are not.

Last year, public health labs around the United States were asked to watch for and quickly respond to cases of advanced antibiotic resistance, especially to some last-resort antibiotics called carbapenems. Carbapenemase-producing organisms (CPOs) are a global concern because of the morbidity and mortality associated with these resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

“Pseudomonas aeruginosa” bacteria, one of the germs that can evolve to resist antibiotics.

In the first nine months of the year, more than 5,770 samples were tested for these “nightmare bacteria,” as the CDC so lovingly calls them, and about 25% were found to have genes that make them hard to treat and easy to share their resistance with other types of bacteria. Of these, 221 had unusual genes that conferred resistance. The cases were scattered throughout 27 states.

“Essentially, we found nightmare bacteria in your backyard,” said the CDC’s Anne Schuchat. “These verge on untreatable infections,” she added, where the only option may be supportive care such as intravenous fluids and machines to maintain life to give the patient a chance to recover. About 2 million Americans get infections from antibiotic-resistant bacteria each year and of those, 23,000 die, Schuchat said.

It is inevitable that each drug will lose its ability to kill disease-causing bacteria over time, says Marc Sprenger, the Director of the World Health Organization’s secretariat for antimicrobial resistance. This is because bacteria, through natural selection and genetic adaptation, become resistant to antibiotics. Essentially, bacteria, like most living things, evolve for survival.

The best way to prepare for any superbug (a bacteria that is resistant to antibiotics) is to prevent the human body from contracting an infection and from rejecting antibiotic medications.

The one thing most can do is pretty simple: don’t take an antibiotic for a viral infection, such as the cold or the flu. Humans are speeding up the process of transforming all bacteria into drug-resistant superbugs by overusing antibiotics. Today, it is estimated that in half of all cases, antibiotics are prescribed for conditions caused by viruses, where they do no good. You can also do more to prevent infections in the first place by ensuring your hands, instruments, and environment are clean, Sprenger said.

If you are prescribed an antibiotic, don’t feel stressed about asking your doctor if the medication is necessary. Remember, often antibiotics are prescribed for viral infections, which leads to resistance. Also, make sure to completely finish the antibiotics and take them as directed if you have a confirmed bacterial infection. Not finishing the medication can lead to the evolution of drug-resistant bacteria.

Humans are also in the bad habit of overusing antibiotics in the agricultural sector. Misuse of antibiotics in livestock, aquaculture, and crops is a key factor contributing to antibiotic resistance and its spread into the environment, the food chain, and human beings. Clean and uncrowded living conditions for the animals can reduce the need to use antibiotics. Not only are clean conditions ideal for healthy livestock, those health benefits will transfer to humans upon consumption.

The overall theme is to maintain a clean environment for yourself and your animals, wash your hands often, only use antibiotics when absolutely necessary, and if antibiotics are necessary, finish the medication and take as directed by your doctor.

How To Build The Ultimate Survival Kit For A Disaster

Click here to view the original post.

It’s Time To Prepare For A Future Disaster With An Emergency Survival Kit.

Survival Kits

A survival kit is a group of critical survival gear and supplies put into a container (bag, pack, tin, etc.). And while that may sound fairly straightforward, there’s a lot to be said for owning a quality one.

Even if you’re a survival expert and can make fishhooks out of pop-tops, fashion hunting bows from plywood, and turn a shoe into a water filtration system – you never want to have to rely on those last resort measures.

At least not in a dire emergency situation.

Having a well-stocked emergency supplies kit, and some bushcraft gear at your disposal is smart. And in the long run, it can be more important than any fancy survival trick.

I am not saying a survivalist is only as good as his equipment. Being creative and adaptive in survival is still essential.

But having a good survival kit always improve your survival odds.

Think of it this way – an expert guitar player can make a crappy guitar sound good but if you give that same musician a Les Paul with Marshall Stacks and a pedal board, they’re going sound amazing!

It’s the same with survival.

You don’t need the professional setup to survive, but having one is always preferred.

Convinced yet? Before we start building a survival kit, let’s take a look inside one first.

Knowing which materials are worthwhile will help guide you to the perfect kit for you.

Survival Kit Words

Items That Go A Quality Survival Kit

It’s important to know what goes into a quality survival kit for two reasons.

First, you’ll know if it’s truly comprehensive or missing an essential item. Basically, you’ll know how to identify a high-quality kit from a poor quality kit.

And second, this list will help you build one.

And even if you do end up buying one instead of building one, you’ll see extra items you’ll want to add to one you’ve bought.

There are no rules against customization – in fact, it’s highly encouraged.

But, here’s the problem – a lot of you survivalists already have their “Bug Out Bag” packed and ready. And when we cover in detail what’s inside a kit, you might notice some crossover between the two.

So my advice is this: redundancy is never a bad thing when it comes to survival.

Having extra fish hooks and dehydrated meals is never bad. And many of those items, weigh little and are easily packed away, without taking up a lot of space.

If the crossover bothers you, you may want to include just those items you don’t have yet. As opposed to building a second “Survival Kit” that’s almost identical to your “Bug Out Bag.”

Finding and Purifying Water Survival Skill

Emergency Food and Water

Before discussing any survival gear, you need to make food and water a priority first.

Without proper hydration and energy, a small emergency can quickly take a turn for the worst.

Even the Red Cross recommends a minimum of:

  • Water: one gallon per person, per day (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)
  • Food: non-perishable, easy-to-prepare food storage (3-day supply for evacuation, 2-week supply for home)

Water Filters/Tablets:

Clean drinking water is critical for survival situations and from your water taps in everyday life.

Water filters or purification tablets should be one of the first things you put into any survival kit or bug out bag.

Iodine tablets are very useful and take up almost no space inside of your kit. Water filters tend to be larger but work faster than iodine so get a couple portable ones; like a Sawyer Mini.

Here’s my video review of the incredible Sawyer Mini.

Calories:

Sustenance is one of the pillars of survival. Without it, you starve, shrivel up and die a miserable death.

Calories are energy, no matter how you’re storing them, so keep some form of food storage in your emergency kits is essential!

It can be as simple as a few energy bars or some freeze-dried dehydrated meals. Some people prefer energy gels, packets of peanuts, trail mix.

Another great survival food for your kit is called Pemmican. This survival snack was originally invented by the Native Americans for their own survival needs. It’s a protein dense survival superfood that can last decades without refrigeration!

Avoid relying on candies and other food with high sugar content. They will give you a short burst of energy and then you’ll feel more tired once it’s quickly used up.

The bottom line is to keep some emergency food in your survival kits.

Gear For A Survival Kit

Key Emergency Tools and Gear

Survival Knife:

bushcraft survival knife

If know how to use one, pack survival knife. But even a small credit card knife can achieve a lot in an emergency.

Knives are one of man’s most important survival tools since the dawn of time. And that remains much the same today – don’t get caught unawares without one.

If you want an excellent compact survival knife that you can easily pack into an emergency kit –  check out The Survival Neck Knife.

Waterproof Matches, Striker, and Lighter:

Waterproof Matches

I carry a Ferro rod, a set of survival matches and a survival lighter in my survival kit.

Because fire is one of man’s oldest survival tools so if you don’t have a way of making one you’re under-prepared.

Of course, there are a lot of ways to start fires without matches and lighters. But those methods are complicated, time-consuming, and less reliable.

Never make surviving an emergency any harder than it needs to be!

First Aid Kit:

Small First Aid Medical kitRarely should you include a complete emergency first aid kit in your kit.

If you do, it will consume most of your kits packing space. But you still need a basic set of first aid supplies. Medical supplies that are useful in survival situations.

Band-aids, antibiotic ointment, alcohol swabs, and some clean gauze are the bare minimum.

For an in-depth article on building a comprehensive survival medical kit, click here.

Small Compass:

military compassIt doesn’t have to be an expensive compass or even a high-tech one. It just needs to be a compass you can rely on to point you in the right direction.

Cheap compasses are for sale everywhere, but make sure that it’s reliable.

Fish Hooks and Line:

In wilderness survival, fishing is one of the easiest and most reliable forms of calorie acquisition.

Fish make for excellent survival protein, and you can find them in most bodies of water. And you don’t need a fancy pole and reel setup to catch one.

Some bait, a strong line, and a hook is all one needs to catch a fish in a pinch. And patience… lots and lots of patience.

Survival Blankets:

tact bivvy emergency sleeping bag

Emergency sleeping bags or “space blanket,” as they are sometimes called, are essential for all Survival Kits.

They pack small and look like tin foil than an actual blanket, but these survival devices retain heat.

They were originally designed by NASA (hence their nickname “space blanket”) for astronauts. But they work just as well for cold survivors down here on Earth.

Of the ones, we’ve tested here at Skilled Survival the Tact Bivvy by Survival Frog is our favorite.

Duct Tape:

The traditional American “fix-all” tape.

Duct tape is highly useful for everyday tasks and emergencies. It allows you to build and repair just about anything you might have on hand in a survival situation.

It’s also a good way to temporarily waterproof something.

Emergency Poncho:

rain ponchoWhen it starts raining in an emergency you must stay dry.

Hyperthermia is a cold sad way to go.

And if you’re stuck outside, with no houses, buildings, caves, or other structures to seek refuge, having an emergency poncho at your disposal is crucial.

Having two is even better – then you won’t have to share yours if you have a companion.

Emergency Lightsticks:

Emergency-Light-Sticks

These are not only useful; they are fun to use.

Everyone loves glow sticks.

And in an emergency, they are very practical assets to have in your kit. They can be used to keep an area lit at night. And they will also help rescuers pinpoint your location.

Dust Masks:

Let’s be honest – none of us know ahead of time the sort of emergency we’ll end up in.

And if it’s one that includes fire, smoke, ash, dust, particulate matter, or other discharge of similar nature, then you are going to want a dust mask.

These protect your respiratory system from pollutants and toxins. They are cheap, lightweight, and easily pack away.

Or you can upgrade from a dusk mask to a full-blown gas mask for more dangerous chemicals in the air.

Nitrile Gloves:

The applications for these are nearly endless.

Nitrile gloves are important when working with injuries. They’re useful for cleaning nasty things (like toilets), or toxic materials.

So stuff a couple of pairs of these into your survival kit. You never know what you’ll need them for, but you can be almost certain you’ll need them for something.

Emergency Whistle:

Emergency-Light-Sticks

While you might have a loud shouting voice, survival whistles are always better at alerting people.

No matter how loud you think you can get, your voice will not carry as far as a whistle.

Survival Flashlight & An Extra Battery:

firehawk tactical flashlightWhile you never want to rely on lots of survival gadgets that require batteries, it still makes sense to carry one for your survival flashlight.

I recommend packing a survival flashlight that’s super bright and only needs a single AA battery.

Then just pack an extra battery of the same size (AA) and you’ll have light in an emergency or survival situation.

Bio-Hazard Bags:

I don’t know what kinds of injuries I’ll be dealing with in a future emergency – and neither do you!

Biohazard bags are the kinds of things you do not need until you need them.

Entertainment:

Emergency-Light-Sticks

A deck of survival playing cards, a cribbage board, a book or magazine can make a huge difference in a survival situation.

Entertainment can preserves one’s sanity in stressful situations.

An emergency kit without some form of distraction is incomplete.

Personal Items:

Do you wear contact lenses? If so, then you should stash a spare pair in your emergency preparedness kit. Being able to see in a crisis is essential, contacts can fall out or get debris in them.

Do you take insulin or special medications? Obviously, you need to add some spares of those critical items to your kit as well.

Think about the items specific to you and your health and add them to your preparedness kit.

Best Survival Kits Money Can Buy

Not every emergency kit is going to have all the critical survival supplies. They come in all shapes and sizes and sometimes there’s not enough room.

Some are big and bulky and will last four people for days. Others are small enough to fit inside of a bug out bag or backpacking pack.

I recommend assessing your needs and then finding the one that’s right for you and your budget.

Ready America Grab n’ Go Deluxe Emergency Backpack

Ready America Survival KitWe’re starting with the biggest (most comprehensive) survival kit on this list.

This full sized backpack emergency kit is equipped to sustain four people for three days in an emergency.

It has almost everything we talked about above, and even a few more items not listed.

The pack is ideal for families. However, it’s the most expensive kit we’ll discuss (check out today’s price).

And for a good reason: it’s the most comprehensive and the largest.

Kungix Outdoor Emergency Survival Gear Kit

Kugix Outdoor Emergency Survival Gear KitThis smaller, easy to carry survival pouch contains several different survival tools.

Multi-tools, a striker, a compass, a portable wire saw and emergency whistle, among other things.

High-quality materials more than justify at this fair price (check out today’s price).

This kit is great if you plan on storing your survival kit inside of another bag because it is so small.

Wise Company 5 Day Survival Backpack

Wise-Food-5-Day-Survival-BackPackThis one is just a lot of bang for your buck. You get:

  • A camouflage backpack
  • 5 water pouches (4.227 fl oz.)
  • Portable Stove
  • 4 fuel tablets
  • 1 stainless steel cup
  • 1 squeeze flashlight
  • 5-in-1 survival whistle
  • 37 piece bandage kit
  • N95 dust mask
  • Pocket, tissues
  • 3 wet naps
  • Waterproof matches
  • Mylar blanket
  • Emergency poncho
  • And playing cards

It’s got a lot of survival supplies at a reasonable price (check out today’s price).

Gerber Bear Grylls Survival Series Ultimate Survival Kit

Gerber-Bear-Grylls-Ultimate-Survival-KitThis kit is another small option, containing all the essential items without the bells and whistles.

This is the bare bones of a survival kit, and it’s in the mid-price range (check out today’s price).

Honestly, if you want a survival kit of this size, it may be more cost-effective to note what’s inside it and then just buy the materials on your own.

Urban Survival Bug Out Bag

Gerber-Bear-Grylls-Ultimate-Survival-Kit

If your looking for a comprehensive urban survival kit that doubles as a bug out bag, look no further than the Urban Survival Bug Out Bag.

This kit includes all the basic equipment you need for a successful bug out, including gear and supplies.

Plus, these bag’s are colored to blend into the urban landscape environment since they are a simple black and gray combination.

For all you get, the price is surprising (check out today’s price).

Adding a Personal Touch To Your Kit

As I mentioned before, even if you bought a commercial survival kit, it is a good practice to customize it.

Never be afraid to add things to it – extra items such as:

  • Favorite multi-tools
  • Personal medications and prescriptions
  • Polarized sunglasses
  • Your favorite survival book
  • A journal
  • Your favorite candy bar
  • Pictures of your loved ones
  • An iPod loaded with your favorite songs
  • Lucky tokens, etc.

Survival is all about thinking outside of the box. It’s a creative art that requires improvisation skills. Apply that towards perfecting your survival kit.

The more time and thought you put into this project the higher the payoff when the time comes to use it.

The Final Word

A survival kit is the kind of asset that makes the difference between a chaotic and difficult struggle, and a manageable challenge. With a single bag, you can prepare yourself for the worst emergency.

Now, as I mentioned, there is a lot of crossover between “Bug out Bags” and survival kits. THIS IS OKAY.

I recommend against supplementing one for the other. Why not have both? Even if they are roughly the same and loaded with a lot of the same supplies, it’s good to have two.

It means you’re doubly prepared in the event of an emergency. Redundancy in survival is often a good thing, do not be afraid to have more than one of the same survival tool.

There are so many survival kits on the market, all advertising a different list of contents. That is a lot of options for prospective buyers like you. And it can sometimes be overwhelming trying to pick the right one.

Use this guide to provide insight to get the perfect survival kit for you and your family.

Regardless of whether you choose to build your own kit or buy one, make sure you keep it at the ready. Ensure that your fate is in your own hands.

Prepare yourself with reliable gear, and an ultimate survival kit.

A Tomato a Day Keeps You Healthy… and Full!

Click here to view the original post.

When you’re living at the mercy of nature, (whose bounty can be very fickle), you need access to smart foods.  You’ll want to keep some foods around that are not only nutritious, but that will also make you feel full on a modest portion.  If it also happens to ward off a myriad of dread diseases, so much the better.  Say hello to what might be a survivor’s best friend: the tomato.

Evidence is emerging that suggests our plump red pal contains a mystery compound that suppresses hormones that trigger our appetite.  Preventing those pesky snack attacks has a lot of obvious advantages for us, whether we are living under normal circumstances or under the austerity of survival conditions.  Staying slim by not overeating may be a great benefit now, but think of those longs days and nights of rationing out a diminishing food supply, and nothing seems to satisfy your continual hunger.  A filling bite of a tomato to take the edge off would be heaven sent.

A French study compared the filling effect of sandwiches made with a tomato-enriched bread, carrot-enriched bread, and plain white bread.  Women of average weight between 18 and 35 were the subjects.  Amazingly, the fiber-rich carrots were not the winner.  Only the tomato bread kept the women satisfied and full.  So, if you only have a slice of cheese or a share of a can of tuna for today’s rations, a couple slices of tomato might be just the thing to turn those few precious bites into a fulfilling meal.

The results are incomplete, and it remains to be determined if tomatoes lower the level of the hunger-producing hormones, like ghrelin.  The part of the tomato that curbs the appetite has not been isolated yet either, though some suspect that it may be the red pigment, lycopene.

Regardless of lycopene’s connection to appetite, it is another reason to plant plenty of tomatoes in your survival garden.  Lycopene is linked to a reduction in a host of cancers including prostate, breast, cervical, skin, pancreatic, and even lung cancer—plus it slows down the progression of some cancers that have already occurred as well.

But wait!  There’s more…

Tomato juice and ketchup have been shown to significantly reduce levels of cholesterol, thus promoting heart health as well.  Tomatoes also keep skin healthy and looking young, and actually help to minimize sunburn.  They have a ton of vitamin C, which has healing, preventative, and nutritional properties—like warding off colds, promoting wounds to heal more quickly and completely, and allowing the body to absorb iron.  Tomatoes are rich in fiber, and they have lots of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to keep you young and energetic.

Tomatoes are easy to grow, and will grow under many diverse conditions. One plant yields many fruits, and one fruit has enough seeds for a hundred new plants.  They can stay on the vine for a long time; they can ripen and survive after picking for a long time; and they don’t require refrigeration.  With all of these benefits, I’m thinking that a good share of my garden will be dedicated to this versatile vegi-fruit.  You can eat it raw, on a sandwich, in a salad, grilled, boiled, or in soup.  You can juice it, make ketchup, salsa, tomato sauce for spaghetti sauce or chili, and it can be sundried too.  Is there anything I’m leaving out?  Oh…and it tastes pretty good too.

6 Essential Knots You Need To Know

Click here to view the original post.

Written by Guest Contributor on The Prepper Journal.

I know you can tie your own shoe laces. But I am sure many people do not know how to tie other types of knots. If you once did then you definitely need some reminder because such skills are easily forgotten and we all know that tying a knot is one of the most important survival skills anyone can learn.

This skill may not be necessary in normal cases but during an emergency, it can make a big difference when it comes to life and death. Knots can help you in many practical ways. For instance, you may need it to build a shelter, hang food away from camp and out of a bears reach and even for first aid.

There are tens of knots you need to know how to tie. However, we have only pieced together 6 of these essential knots. We will discuss briefly on how to tie each of them. We will also mention the common uses of such knots. You can read more about survival skills such as these at thesurvivalcorps.com.

  1. Square Knots (Also Known As Reef Knots)

Definition and Use

The square knot, or reef knot, is possibly the most used knot. It is also the easiest to learn. If you can only know one type of knot then square knot would be the best one to learn how to tie. We use reef knots to combine similar ropes together. You can also use it to tie off a knot on a single rope. Use it to tie bundles of wood together or to tie your shoe laces.

How to Tie It

All you need to do is loop the rope in your right hand over the one in your left hand and then left over right. It is that simple. However, you will need to remember the order in which you did them. You will need the knowledge when you need to untie the knot.

  1. Clove Hitch

Definition and Use

Clove hitch is also as easy to tie as square knots. It is also ties fast and is effective. This is the knot you will need to secure a rope to a solid structure. There is high probability that it will slip if you tie it around smooth structures. Even on rough structures, you will need to keep it tense to prevent slippage. Use it to tie a tarp when making a shelter. It has many other uses.

How to Tie It

Make a loop around the target structure with the rope. With the loop in place, make another loop. Now, pass the end of the rope under the previous loop and then tighten. Be sure not to release the tension as the knot can become undone. A good idea to tighten it further and make it more secure is to add a square knot.

  1. Sheet Bend Knot

Definition and Use

You will need this knot to connect two ropes of different sizes. In the camp, use it to lengthen a guy line by adding an unused bit of a string or rope to the end. You can also use it to fix snapped boot/shoe laces by connecting any cord or string you can get your hands on.

How to Tie It

Start by making a ‘J’ shape out of the larger sized rope. You can then pass the small sized rope through the mid portion from behind. Loop the small sized rope all around the sides of the ‘j’. Pass the smaller rope further back under itself. The difficulty of tying this one is rated medium.

  1. The Figure 8 Knot

Definition and Use

Survivalists refer to the figure 8 as a stopper knot. This is because you tie it at the end of a rope. The aim of the knot is to prevent the rope from passing further than you want it. Figure 8 also forms part of more complex knots. Therefore, knowing it is a key to learning to tie other difficult to tie knots.

This knot is great for beginner climbers. If you can remember just one knot, forget about others and concentrate on being good with figure 8 knot. Its strength and reliability has been tested by mountain climbers and ardent survivalists.

How to Tie It

This knot is not as hard to tie as a sheet bend knot. Take one end of your rope or cordage. Pass it over itself. This will form a loop. Return under the leading line and into the previous loop. Fasten and you will have your figure 8 knot.

  1. Two Half Hitches

Definition and use

This knot is an improved version of clove hitch. Many consider them all-purpose knots. This is because you can use it for a variety of applications. You can use the knot to tie your rope to any solid structure around. You can use it to tie a rope to a tree or a post. It is also a great knot if you want to tie two ropes together.

How to Tie It

Two half hitches is one of the easier knots to tie. Wrap the end of your rope around your target structure and make a half hitch. Wrap the rope in the same direction to make the second half hitch. Tense the knot by pulling and you will have your two half hitches.

  1. The Bowline Knot

Definition and Use

A bowline knot is one of the easiest knots to tie. It is also one of the most basic. You can tie it fast and easily. Unlike most knots that can easily become undone, the bowline knot is extremely tight. It will not slip even when relaxed. It offers a good way to make a loop. Use it to connect two lines. Another good use for it is attaching jib sheets to jib’s clew.

How to Tie It

To understand how to tie this knot, we’ll use the analogy of a rabbit hole. Start by making a loop towards the end of your rope. The analogy of rabbit hole comes here. The loop represents the rabbit hole and the rope is the tree. The rabbit runs out of its hole, plays around the back of the tree. The rabbit then returns to its hole. Follow this analogy and you will find bowline knot very easy to tie.

There are many more knots to know and understand; basic seamanship has it’s own set, including the favorite, the sheep shank. However if you can master these six then the others are just an extension to their basic principals.

The Best Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup Recipe Ever

Click here to view the original post.

This is truly the best homemade chicken noodle soup in the world. I have made this for years and now my grandkids ask me for the recipe. The reason I think this is the Best Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup is the fact that 99.9% of the ingredients are right there in your pantry, freezer, refrigerator or food storage pantry. You can interchange some cans of chicken with frozen chicken or leftover chicken.

You can make your own noodles, or use my secret ingredient noodles: Grandma’s Frozen Egg Noodles. Of course, you can boil your packaged noodles/pasta of choice and add later when the soup is almost finished cooking. I use my electric crock pot so I can do other things because I usually have ten things going on at once. So I set the crockpot on low and go about my day doing stuff we all do each day. I call it my set and forget dinner. It really is a very yummy smooth soup with just the right amount of spices. It practically fills my 3-1/2 quart crock pot. It’s a great soup to take to a neighbor who is ill or needs a little something from a friend to cheer them up for any reason.

Here is a picture of the Better Than Bouillon I use:

The Very Best Ammo For Home Defense

The Very Best Ammo For Home Defense

Previously, I wrote about my basic layout for home defense, and why I like to have my weapons laid out in such a specific way. In this article, I’ll go over my thought process for choosing ammunition, and what types of ammo I have throughout my house.

Generally speaking, I select the type of ammunition that will inflict the most damage if I ever have to use it.

Shotgun

As I’ve said before, in my opinion, home defense starts and ends with a shotgun. It is absolutely the best weapon that I own for self-defense. My 12-gauge shotgun is a permanent fixture above my nightstand, and it’s always loaded with Winchester PDX1 shells.

There are plenty of different home-defense shotguns, both slugs and buckshot. Choosing the best load for your shotgun should be based on your use. If your shotgun is primarily meant for close-range engagements, buckshot would be your best bet. If you might use it at further distances, a slug would perform admirably.

My personal favorite round is Winchester PDX1. This specific round has three buck pellets surrounding a slug. The result is an extremely deadly round. However, there are plenty of different shotgun rounds that could meet your needs.

Handgun

Regardless of caliber, hollow-point ammunition is going to be your best bet for defense purposes. Jacketed hollow-point ammunition expands on impact, as opposed to traditional target ammo, which does not. For defense use, this means that once the bullet hits your target, it will expand and impact more tissue. As a result, the round is much deadlier. While it is more expensive, hollow point ammunition is worth it for defense purposes.

Rifle

There are a few different types of rounds used in 5.56 ammo that are used in AR-15s. There is the standard full-metal-jacket ball ammo, hollow-point ammo, and also barrier blind ammunition. Barrier blind is a relatively new type of ammunition, and represents the most modern ammunition technology. Based on initial testing, barrier-blind ammunition performs very well.

However, high-grain ball ammo and hollow-point ammo also perform well in AR platform firearms. In other rifles, most quality hunting ammunition will perform well for home defense use.

Overall, the number of different types of ammunition available can be overwhelming. As a general rule of thumb, more propellant means a faster bullet, which means a deadlier round. However, there are a few other things to keep in mind. Modern improvements in ammunition, such as jacketed hollow point and barrier-blind ammunition, perform extremely well. They do an excellent job expanding when they hit their target. This expansion creates a much deadlier round then the traditional full-metal-jacket range ammo. When it comes to shotguns, buckshot is probably your best bet, but once again, there is modern ammunition that has both a rifled slug and buckshot built into it.

What do you prefer for home defense ammo? Share your thoughts in the section below:

Why Every Prepper Needs Non-GMO Seeds in Their Long-Term Supplies

Click here to view the original post.

Oftentimes in the interests of economics and financial necessity, people will abandon quality in the interests of price. Nothing could be more telling than the current battle being waged with GMO foods and crops. The GMO crops are more than simply unhealthy: they have also been the doorway for companies such as Monsanto, Cargill, and others to patent their seeds. The FDA became involved during the Obama years, and raids and prosecutions occurred by charges that the patents on GMO seeds were violated by farmers whose crops showed traces of those patented genes.

This is difficult to avoid, as it is almost impossible to prevent bees and/or wind from spreading pollen from GMO crops to non-GMO farms. There is a definitive work that you can read to find out the dangers from a health perspective and from a corporate perspective (regarding “Frankenstein GMO’s and factory farming). It is entitled Seeds of Deception: Exposing Industry and Government Lies About the Safety of the Genetically Engineered Foods, by Jeffrey M. Smith.

The book was written in 2003 and contains a wealth of knowledge about GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) crops and farming…giving the history behind the corporate movement and explaining how cross-pollinating occurs (as outlined above), giving the corporations “leverage” with which to take down small family farms.

Fortunately, there are champions to rely upon that will give us a “rallying flag” to regroup and wage this battle, uphill though it may seem. My good friend, Miss Tess Pennington, is one of those champions: a family woman of faith, honesty, and solid American values based on hard work and true pioneer spirit. She has shown us the way: there are numerous articles available at Ready Nutrition for your perusal on seed-saving and seed preservation that will be your “compass rose” to keep the harmful GMO crops from crossing your table.  Ready Nutrition’s archives are full of the vital information you need: all of that information is right under your fingertips, waiting for you to read it.

Miss Tess recently began her own Heirloom Seed company! All you’ll have to do is send her an e-mail or post a comment, and she’ll be happy to give her advice that can help you to find the best way. Now is the time to become proactive with establishing your own greenhouse. A self-enclosed greenhouse will not only ensure protection of your produce from the elements but enable you to further shield and protect them from the cross-pollination previously discussed.

In our next installment in this 2-Part series, we will go into further detail about the dangers of GMO foods…how they affect our health and what effects they render on the human body. The fight against GMO crops and Agribusiness is an uphill battle, but you can win that battle right inside your own home. Being informed and aware is the first step, and the second is to take action on that information…by buying heirloom seeds, practicing seed-saving techniques, and boycotting unhealthy products by embracing a healthy lifestyle within your home and family. That’s what Ready Nutrition is all about, and Miss Tess and I both encourage you in these efforts. JJ out!
