Charged With A Felony For Complaining About Cops?

charged with a felony

Be careful complaint to police officers. You could be charged with a felony.

Complaining about a law-enforcement officer’s behavior can lead to a five-year prison sentence in Louisiana. William Aubin Jr. was arrested and charged with a felony because he complained about a sheriff’s deputy who called him a “pussy.”

Deputy William Durkin allegedly arrested Aubin, after the man got out his cell phone to call the sheriff’s office and complain, In Justice Today writer Michael Stein reported on Medium. Aubin was angry because Durkin came to his home, falsely accused him of reckless driving, and insulted him.

Aubin was charged with a felony called public intimidation and retaliation. That offense is punishable by up to five years in prison in Louisiana. The law is supposed to punish people that assault police officers or threaten them with violence. Now it is apparently being used to suppress First Amendment rights.

Federal Judges State Criminalizing Free Speech

Fortunately, the district attorney dropped the charges against Aubin. That did not stop Aubin from filing a lawsuit against Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard and Durkin in which he charged they had violated the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution’s guarantee of free speech.

Disturbingly Aubin is not alone, Travis Seals filed a similar lawsuit; in which he accused officers of pepper spraying him after he said he would file a complaint. Like Aubin, Seals was charged with a felony for public intimidation which led to a lawsuit.

The public intimidation law, 2006 Louisiana Laws – RS 14:122, violates the First Amendment, U.S. District Judge Jane Triche Milazzo ruled in Seals case.

That law criminalizes “threats to engage in lawful conduct such as; criticizing a police officer, writing a letter to the newspaper, filing a lawsuit, voting for an official’s opponent, or filing an ethics complaint,” Milazzo wrote.

The law violated Aubin’s First Amendment Rights, Chief Judge Brian A. Jackson of the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana ruled in September.

“The right to criticize the police without risk of arrest distinguishes a democracy from a police state,” Jackson wrote in an opinion.

Complaining About Police Is A Worse Crime Than Hitting An Officer

What is truly frightening is that RS 14:122 has been on the books for 76 years since 1942, as attorney Kearney Loughlin, who is representing Aubin and Seals, noted. Under the law, a person can face more prison time for making a complaint than hitting an officer.

“You get a higher bail because it’s a felony,” Loughlin said. “It’s a more serious felony than battery on a police officer. You can punch an officer and not face the same ramifications.”

Disturbingly, Republican Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry is appealing Chief Judge Jackson’s and Judge Milazzo’s rulings. Landry refused to provide a comment for the In Justice Today article. It will be up to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans to determine if complaining about a police officer is constitutionally protected free speech.

Chimpanzee Nests Healthier And Cleaner Than Human Beds New Study Reveals

Click here to view the original post.
chimpanzee nests

New studies show chimpanzee nests are actually cleaner than human beds.

Chimpanzee nests are cleaner because chips are better housekeepers than humans. A scientific study found that the nests chimps build in the jungle are actually cleaner and safer than human beds.

Researchers swabbed 41 chimp nests in Tanzania and tested the samples for parasites. When the samples were tested, more than half of the chipanzee nests were free of insects and other pests. Only 15 of the nests contained insects. Parasites that prey on chimps were found in just four of the nests.

“Human beds are rife with microbes, mites, fungus, and pests like bed bugs in sharp contrast to chimp nests,” New York University biologist Philip Tierno told The Washington Post. In his recent research, Tierno has discovered that mattresses are covered with dead skin and filled with unbelievable amounts of debris including foods particles which draw insects.

Your Bed is Probably Dirtier than a Chimpanzee Nest

Mattresses contain so much debris that they get measurably heavier over time, Tierno said. Nor are mattresses the only part of beds that are covered with microbes.

“The microbes we found on pillowcases are similar in composition to the microbes found on toilet seats,” Holly Menninger of the Bell Museum of Natural History said. Menninger tested bedding during research published in 2013.

Chimpanzee Nests Cleaner Because Chimps Don’t Foul Their Own Nests

Scientists were also surprised by what they did not find in chimp nests – fecal matter, The Washington Post reported. Chimpanzees are apparently smart enough to use an outside bathroom.

To be fair to humans, chimps move more than humans and so build new “chimpanzee nests” more often. People usually sleep in the same bed every night and are often too lazy to change sheets and too cheap to buy a new “microbe-free” mattress when appropriate.

Humans can learn a valuable lesson from the chimps. They can change their sheets regularly and use the washing machine more often. Buying a new mattress every two or three years is also an excellent idea.

Simply running a hot-water wash in the washing machine will kill almost all the germs found on human bedding. Changing your sheets every other day, and making sure the water temperature is turned up as hot as possible on your washer will help protect you and your family from most germs.

The truth is, chimpanzees have an important lesson to teach people. Cleanliness and sanitary conditions are possible in any environment without high-tech tools – even in the jungle. Merely changing your bedding with regularity can protect you from all kinds of “bad-bug” germs and parasites. There are also some great off-the-grid ways to get rid bed bugs

Avocado Benefits Most People Should Know But Haven’t Been Told About

avocado benefits

Studies show avocado benefits to be “off the charts” when it comes to healing and fighting off aging. The truth is, this fruit is one of the healthiest foods you can eat.

Avocado benefits are many. In fact, they are one of the healthiest foods you can eat. They are an excellent source of monounsaturated fat, a type of fat your body will burn for energy instead of storing. Avocados also contain loads and loads of absorbable vitamins and antioxidants. These super-fruits have numerous health benefits that might surprise you.

Avocado Benefits: Potassium Rich.

Avocados provide close to 20 essential health-boosting nutrients, including potassium, vitamin E, B vitamins, and folic acid. Potassium plays a critical function in heart health, bone health, digestive function, and muscle density maintenance. Potassium is essential for the proper function of all cells, tissues, and organs in your body.

Despite the fact that it is available in many foods, only 2 percent of adults in the U.S. get the recommended daily amount. This fact is particularly troubling because potassium offsets hypertensive effects of sodium. Imbalance in your sodium-potassium ratio can not only lead to high blood pressure but may also contribute to many other diseases, including heart disease and stroke.

About two and a half avocados provide the daily recommended amount of about 4,700 milligrams (mg) of potassium a day. Additionally, an average avocado contains about 40 mg of magnesium, which is about 10 percent of the recommended daily value.

Avocado Benefits: Healthy Fat Super-Charger.

Because avocados are incredibly rich in healing fatty acids, they assist your body’s ability to absorb certain fat-soluble nutrients from other food sources. One facinating study first published in The Journal of Nutrition noted that eating a whole fresh avocado with an orange-colored tomato sauce significantly enhanced absorption of the various carotenoids. It also converted the carotenoids into a bio-active form of vitamin A.

Avocado Benefits: BIO-Available Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Avocados are one of few foods that contain significant levels of both vitamins C and E and are high in fiber, with about 4.6 grams in half an avocado. So when you eat avocados, you’re providing your body with a wide-spectrum package of nutrition.

Avocado Benefits: Cancer-fighting.

Avocatin B, an amazing type of fat found in avocados, has been found to combat acute myeloid leukemia, a deadly form of cancer. The cancer-fighting fat in avocados was able to shut down the leukemia stem cells while leaving healthy cells unharmed. Avocados are also rich in cancer-fighting carotenoids, which are most plentiful in the dark-green portion of the flesh that’s closest to the skin. Studies also show promising results for prostate cancer.

Avocado Benefits: Weight Loss.

According to a published research study in Nutrition Journal, those who ate half an avocado with their standard lunch reported being 40 percent less hungry three hours after their meal and 28 percent less hungry at the five-hour mark compared to those who did not eat avocado with lunch. The study also pointed out that avocados appear helpful for regulating blood sugar.

Be Certain You Lock-In Your Avocado Benefits:

To preserve the area with the highest concentration of antioxidants, you’ll want to peel the avocado with your hands just like you would a banana. Pretty darn easy.

1. Cut avocado lengthwise around the seed

2. Holding each half of the avicado, twist them in opposite directions to separate them from seed

3. Cut each half lengthwise

4. Next, using a teaspoon or your thumb and index finger, simply peel the skin off each piece

Avocado Benefits: Pesticide Safe. While no crop in the modern world is 100 percent pesticide free, Avocados have been rated as one of the safest commercial crops concerning pesticide application. The fruits thick outer skin protects the inner fruit from large pesticide concentrations.

As readers already know, its important to consider all aspects of healthcare. This is especially true for those who want to stay healthy off-the-grid.

Facebook Users Tricked Into Revealing Personal Data In Weird “Lab Rat” Behavior Experiment

Click here to view the original post.
personal data being revealed

Personal data is being freely given up by Facebook users in many online quizes.

Your personal data is being collected through some new tactics and you might be participating in behavioral science experiments without your consent and not even realize it – especially if you take the wrong quizzes online.

More than six million Facebook users were tricked into participating in a behavioral science experiment disguised as a quiz. The experiment called MyPersonality operated on Facebook for several years and collected personal data from millions of people.

The data collected by the MyPersonality Facebook page was made available to scientists and companies all over the world, The New Scientist reported. Anybody was able to log in and get access to the data with just a password and a username.

Personal Data and Psychometric Guinea Pigs?

The accessible data included the ages, genders, and relationship status of up to 4.3 million people. Personality scores that revealed behavior traits such as conscientiousness and agreeability were also publicly available.

MyPersonality was reportedly operated by data scientists at the Psychometrics Center at England’s University of Cambridge. The scientists were using the data in their research and in business ventures.

Politicians And Big Business Used Data from Facebook Experiment

Two of the scientists behind My Personality; David Stillwell and Michal Kosinski, ran a company called Cambridge Personality Research. Cambridge Personality Research sold a marketing tool that built advertisements aimed at specific personalities. The data the tool was based on was collected by MyPersonality.

Another researcher behind MyPersonality was Alexandr Kogan who has been connected to Cambridge Analytica. Cambridge Analytica advised political campaigns; including the effort to take Britain out of the European Union or Brexit. President Donald J. Trump (R-New York) and U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) are also accused of using personal data in their respective presidential  runs in 2016 as do most candidates in almost any campaign. Cambridge Analytica is now out of business.

More than 280 people and organizations accessed the data collected by MyPersonlity. Giant corporations that used MyPersonality included Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo; now part of Verizon.

Facebook Aware Personal Data Being Revealed

Facebook itself was very aware of MyPersonality and the data it collected. Somebody at Facebook was also accessing the data collected by MyPersonality.

The MyPersonality App was up and running on Facebook as recently as April 7, 2018, The New Scientist reported. Facebook only removed MyPersonality after an investigation by the British government’s Information Commissioner.

Code that allowed anybody access to get access to MyPersonality data was available on the website GitHub, The New Scientist reported. GitHub is a marketplace for digital tools used by software engineers and developers. Github is a public website that anybody can access.

Big Gov and Big Biz Needs Your Personal Data

Disturbingly, MyPersonality was far from alone; Facebook suspended over 200 pages that were collecting personality data. The gathering of personal data is becoming big business vast numbers of people are trying to cash in by collecting and selling your data.

German entrepreneur Dr. Christian Lange has even labeled personal data “the oil of the 21stCentury” because of its value. Lange has built an app called Opira that is supposed to serve as a marketplace where average people will sell their data to big corporations like General Motors.

It would be a good idea to think twice next time somebody online asks you to take a quiz. There is a strong possibility the quiz is really a psychological test designed to collect personal data about your behavior that someone plans to sell and the government plans to add to your dossier.

Don’t Forget To Plant A Backyard “Potato Pharmacy” This Year

backyard potato pharmacy

It’s easy to grow and harvest potatoes for your backyard potato pharmacy from the soil.

Potatoes are one of those basic vegetables that have crossed cultures in the last 400 years, and no wonder! They can be baked, fried, boiled, mashed and mixed with other things. They can be a hearty part of soups and stews. If your vegetable budget is limited, potatoes provide vitamins and minerals, and can even have first-aid applications.

Native to the northern part of South America, they have become a staple across the world. But everyone should know that there are also a number of benefits and uses for potatoes that are not so commonly known. All reasons you should plant your very own backyard potato pharmacy.

Here Are Just A few “Backyard Potato Pharmacy” Uses And Benefits:

Chock full of Vitamins: Vitamin C and antioxidants help reduce cell damage and can even help prevent macular degeneration. Potatoes are high in vitamin C, antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin B. To preserve the vitamins, cook the potatoes in their jackets – steam or microwave is best.

Save that Potato Water If You Get Constipated: When you boil potatoes, some of the vitamins leach into the water. If you drain them, you are draining off part of the vitamins. If you are feeling constipated, mix 2 tablespoons of potato water and 2 tablespoons of honey and drink it down to get things moving along. Drink before eating breakfast for a better outlook on the rest of the day.

Boost your Mood: If you are having a dreary day, potatoes can make it better. Seriously! Cozy some mashed potatoes up to a meal with turkey. The turkey is high in tryptophan, and the carbs in the potatoes trigger a nice insulin release (unless you eat too many) which fast-tracks tryptophan, giving it a nice quick ride to your brain, where it helps release serotonin, the neurotransmitter that helps regulate your mood.

Relieve Itchy Skin: Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is an itchy, red rash that sometimes goes with hay fever and other allergic reactions. You can relieve it by grating a potato, dip a bit of gauze bandaging in the potato juice to reduce the inflammation.

First Aid for Splinters: Grate or slice a potato, and bind it over a stubborn splinter. Alternatively, hollow out a place in a whole potato, and stick the finger or toe that has a sliver inside the potato. Leave the potato poultice on overnight, and the splinter should come out quickly and easily.

First Aid for Burns: Take the “ow!” out of minor burns by applying cold potato water or grated potato to draw out the heat.

Eliminate Dark Eye Circles: Put grated potato in a piece of thin cloth, and place it over your eyes – one sack to each eye. Relax for at least 15 minutes with the grated potato in place. Repeat daily, and the circles should start to fade.

Fast First-Aid for Boils: Boils are a painful condition, but potatoes can really help. Grate the potato, and apply the wet potato right on the boil. Chemicals that naturally occur in potatoes will help bring the boil to a head and leach out the infection. Keep the potato on the boil for 10 to 20 minutes, and then clean it thoroughly. Repeat twice daily.

Raw Milk Hysteria? Once Again Government Claims “Killer Bacteria”

Click here to view the original post.
raw milk hysteria

People have been drinking raw milk for thousand of years, in recent times for an array of incredible health benefits.

According to government statistics only 2 people have died from drinking raw milk since 2009. In fact, Americans are statistically more likely to be killed by a postal worker as there have been 35 shooting deaths from post office workers, “going postal” since 1983.

Listeria Hysteria?

Raw milk from some dairies could cause deadly brain infections, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture warned. The Department is advising consumers to throw raw milk away.

“Consumers who purchased raw, whole milk from Pool Forge Dairy between April 25 and May 7 should immediately discard it,” a press release from the department stated.

The Raw Milk “Danger Zone”

Raw, whole, or unpasteurised milk from the Pool Forge Dairy might be infected with listeria a bacteria that causes a deadly disease called listeriotis, the department warned. One out of five people with listeriosis will die from it, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported.

Listeriosis can cause miscarriages and stillbirths, the CDC reported. It can also lead to the deaths of newborns. Listeria is very deadly because it usually attacks the brain and the nervous system. People over 65, infants, and persons with weakened immune symptoms are more susceptible to it.

Milk Outlaws?

The milk was sold at the Pool Forge Dairy in East Earl Township, the Hoover’s Farm Market, and the Shady Maple Market, in April and May. No sicknesses from the allegedly infected milk had been reported Food Safety NewsNoted. The milk apparently tested positive for the bacteria.

Government officials claim pasteurising kills listeria and other bacteria and makes milk safe to drink. Unpasteurised milk is in its natural state. Most milk sold in supermarkets in the United States is pasteurised.

Raw Milk is Legal to Drink But Illegal To Sell In Many States

It is illegal to sell raw milk in 20 states ProCon reported. It is also illegal to take it across state lines, under Federal Law. There are 13 states, including Pennsylvania, where raw milk can be sold in stores.  Unpasteurised milk can be sold directly at dairies in 17 states.

Contrary to popular belief it is legal to drink raw milk in all 50 states. Strangely enough however, it is illegal to feed it to livestock in Michigan.

Should the CDC send out warnings for Americans going to the post office?

New York Governor Depriving Gun Owners of First Amendment Rights

Click here to view the original post.
Guns Owners

Gun Owners Know Our Country’s Founders Would Turn Over In Their Graves.

New York State’s Democratic Governor is depriving gun owners of their First Amendment rights by canceling insurance policies an NRA lawsuit alleged. The suit claims Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered state regulators to prosecute companies that issued insurance to New York gun owners.

“Directed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, this campaign involves selective prosecution, backroom exhortations, and public threats with a singular goal – to deprive the NRA and its constituents of their First Amendment right to speak freely about gun-related issues and defend the Second Amendment,” a complaint filed by the National Rifle Association (NRA) on May 11, alleges.

The suit was filed after three companies; Chubb, Lockton Companies and Lloyd’s of London, canceled NRA Carry Guard policies – which cover legal costs for gun owners involved in self-defense shootings. The policies were canceled after the New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) investigated and sued the companies.

New York State tried to Force Companies to Stop Doing Business with NRA

“The foundation of Defendants’ selective-enforcement and retaliation campaign is a series of threats to financial institutions that DFS will exercise its extensive regulatory power against entities that fail to sever ties with the NRA,” the lawsuit complaint charges. “To effect their sweeping agenda; Defendants issued public demands that put DFS-regulated institutions on notice to “discontinue their arrangements with the NRA” and other “gun promotion organisations” if they planned to do business in New York.”

The defendants in the suit include; Cuomo, the DFS, and DFS head Maria T. Vullo. The DFS claimed that the insurers had broken state law by offering the Cover Guard policies.

Bloomberg used State Agency to attack NRA, Lawsuit alleges

Another NRA lawsuit alleged that the DFS investigated the Lockton Companies at the behest of former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s gun-control group Everytown for Gun Safety, Blomberg reported.

Lockton; which was fined $7 million by the DFS, agreed to cancel 680 Carry Guard policies in a settlement. Lockton violated a contract to offer the policies through 2024, the NRA lawsuit claims. The NRA’s complaint in that suit alleges that the DSF is engaged in “a politically-motivated effort to deprive NRA members of insurance coverage.”

Two other companies that issued Carry-Guard insurance in New York State were targeted and fined by the DFS, news reports indicate. Both of those companies; Lloyd’s of London and Chubb, canceled the policies.

The famous British brokerage Lloyd’s of London ordered syndicates that underwrite policies through its insurance market to stop covering insurance programs associated with the NRA on May 9, Business Insurancereported. Lloyds paid $1.3 million to settle charges brought against it by the DFS.

Illinois Union, a subsidiary of Chubb, paid a $1.3 million fine and cancelled Carry Guard policies issued to New York State residents, Insurance Journalreported. News reports did say whether the NRA plans to sue Chubb or Lloyd’s.

Gun Controllers accuse NRA of selling Murder Insurance

Cuomo and the DFS’s actions might have been motivated by a website called “Stop Murder Insurance.” The website, created by two groups called Color of Change and Guns Down, charges that Carry Guard protects murderers; and specifically mentions Chubb and Lockton, but not Lloyd’s.

Cuomo’s real motivation might have nothing to do with gun control. The governor is facing reelection this fall and needs to mobilize anti-gun Democratic voters. Cuomo and Stop Murder Insurance are trying to mobilize African-American voters by blaming the 2012 Trayvon Martin shootingon the NRA.

The governor needs all the votes he can get, because of a strong Democratic primary challenge from Sex in the Cityactress Cynthia Nixon. Politics it seems is the real threat to gun owners’ First and Second Amendment Rights.

Gun owners had better register and vote this fall, because Democrats are targeting them. Gun owners in other states had better watch out because Democrats are likely to try similar tactics all over the nation.

Stuffed Up Already? Try This Early Summer Sinus Solution

Early summer sinus solution

By for you run to the pharnacy, try this effective early summer sinus solution

With early summer allergies on the rise, lots of folks are looking for an early summer sinus solution  to clear up the sinuses and get breathing again. So once you begin to notice mucus is starting to build up in your sinuses, consider a simple method called “nasal irrigation.” Some of our readers know this, but its always good to have a reminder when the sesaons change. It’s usually enough to deliver much-needed relief and in many cases the relief is rapid.

First, it’s important to understand that your nostrils are a necessary filtering system which not only removes smoke, dust, and other irritants, but they also warms and humidifies the air you breathe. When your nostrils start to become irritated or “blocked” and you begin to breathe through the mouth, you put a lot of unnecessary stress on both your bronchial tubes as well as your lungs.

OK, To irrigate your nostrils, dissolve one teaspoon of salt in 16 oz of warm water. A small amount of this can be placed in a small plastic inhaler jar and gently used as you would any inhaling mist to clear the nostrils.
If you have an inhaler, pour the entire 16 ounces of mixture into a fairly wide bowl. While bending forward, block one of your nostrils and set another below the water surface in the bowl. Very carefully, take the water in and gently pull it into the nostril until it’s possible to taste the salty solution trickling into the rear of your throat. Once your can tase it… blow it back out. (the fun part, right?) Repeat this process a few times with both nostrils for a great early summer sinus solution.

In addition , you might try some horseradish. I use it all the time in combination with nasal irrigation.

So before you go to the pharmacy to pick up your favorite nasal spray, give this a try. If you’re like me every time you use the over the counter stuff like Afrin, you get rebound addition or whatever its called from using too much. Truth is, sometimes I feel worse from using the over the counter spray than I do from the allergy.

How To Run Your Business When The Power Grid Goes Down

Click here to view the original post.
Run your business when the power grid goes down

With the right technology, it’s possible to run your business when the power grid goes down.

A back-up source of electricity has become a must-have resource for all small businesses, entrepreneurs, and freelancers. Smart business people realized if you want a sustained cash flow and life style in troubled times, you’ll  have to learn to run your business when the power grid goes down.

Small-businesses in Puerto Rico were able to stay open and accept digital payments even after Hurricane Maria destroyed the island’s electric grid. The Punta Maria Bakery in Rincon stayed open and made money by accepting Bitcoin even though the grid was down, blogger Annie Mueller reported on Medium.

The owners even posted a sign that said “We Don’t Always Have Electricity, But We Accept Bitcoin.” That means Punta Maria’s owners were able to make some money without the electric grid, phone service, cash, and possibly cell-phone service. All they needed was an internet connection and an off-grid source of electricity like a gas or solar generator.

How Businesses Can Operate Without Grid Electricity

One of the greatest ongoing threats to the survival of small businesses is the dependence of the economy on electricity.

Around 78% of transactions of consumer transactions in the USA in 2015 were made with credit or debit cards, The San Francisco Federal Reserve reported. Credit and debit cards require a card reader which needs electricity and internet or phone service to operate.

Small businesses should be able to keep taking credit and debit card payments when the grid is down – if they have backup power, internet, and payment systems available. That means entrepreneurs who are prepared for outages can continue to operate or perhaps even turn a disaster into a competitive advantage.

No Grid Electricity, No Cash, No Problem

A greater problem would be lack of access to cash. Most people get cash from registers or automatic teller machines (ATMs) that need electricity to run. That means cash would have to be distributed the old-fashioned way through local bank branches, which no longer exist in some areas.

Even if cash can be distributed, it might be days or weeks after a disaster before the government or banks can haul the banknotes to your area. That means you might be faced with several days or weeks without a functioning local economy.

Beyond that, paper cash presents a huge safety risk because it can be stolen or taken by force. If you do have paper cash in an emergency situation and you actually use it, you’ll attract the attention of bad guys who have guns. And the truth is, even if you have guns yourself, you really don’t want to risk a shootout over a cash transaction if it can be avoided.

So it makes good sense for every business owner who needs to stay open, to prepare to do so under these adverse circumstances… without cash and without the electric grid. Further, entrepreneurs that can achieve those goals will survive, thrive, and keep their families safe after a catastrophe. The good news is that with the right technology, you really can run your business when the power grid goes down.

Run Your Business When The Power Grid Goes Down

Most businesses that have internet access and some type of backup electricity should be able to keep operating and run your business when the grid grid goes down. It should also be possible for freelancers, folks who work from home, and online entrepreneurs to keep operating and even making money when the electric grid is down for a sustained period.

Even gig economy workers; such as Uber, Lyft, and GrubHub drivers, might be able to keep working and making money with no grid. Such workers might be able to keep operating if they have satellite smartphones.

There is also a strong possibility that the cellphone system will start to come back on  before the electric grid after an emergency. Phone towers are self-contained units that are easier to repair and can operate with off-grid power sources. Remarkably, Wi-Fi and cell-phone service might come on in your area before other utilities.

This means smartphones and payment apps; like Apple Pay, PayPal, and Google Pay, might keep operating in your area if the grid is down. Business owners might be faced with customers with no cash, who cannot pay with their phones because there is no electricity. A company with a source of backup electricity might be able to accept Apple Pay, PayPal, and Google Pay even if the grid is down.

Keeping your business operational is critical because you will still need to make money, pay bills, and feed your family after a catastrophe. An off-grid electrical backup system and a satellite internet connection would be two of the smartest investments for any small businessperson, entrepreneur, or freelancer to make in an increasingly chaotic world.

Conclusion: Backup preparations for your business should make it possible to stay open for business and even make some money after a “grid down” event. In addition to having a source of off-grid backup power, you should consider other payment methods which are likely to continue to operate.

Cilantro’s Amazing Health Benefits

Click here to view the original post.
cilantro's amazing health benefits

Cilantro has so many amazing health benefits it should be in everyone’s 2018 garden.

Many individuals don’t recognize that the herb known as cilantro doesn’t originate from a plant of the same name, but in actuality consists of the leaves and stems of the coriander plant. Because of this, cilantro is related to cumin, dill, fennel, and anise. Additionally, cilantro’s amazing health benefits were discovered long ago.

People have utilized cilantro in cooking for years and years, and it has garnered notoriety for its robust and citrus-like flavor, which pairs well with seasonings. Examples of such would be mint, basil, and turmeric. Furthermore, the savory herb receives acclaim for its medicinal properties, namely:

Alleviates Tension

Cilantro has been found to provide a significant calming effect, so it is a reliable candidate to serve as a conservative therapy for relief of anxiety. The reality is, massive quantities of cilantro extract were found to create effects identical to the renowned anti-anxiety drug Valium®, but without that drug’s numerous and uncomfortable side effects. Some of these maladies include confusion, hallucinations, agitation, and memory-related issues.

Eradication Of Toxic Compounds (Heavy Metals)

The buildup of toxic metals and chemical elements such as lead, mercury, aluminum, and arsenic in human bodies could have severely detrimental health effects, including neurological damage, infertility, heart conditions and hormonal imbalances. Cilantro can assist in countering some of these problems. It has also been found to accelerate the elimination of pollutants. In mice, for example, simultaneous administration of cilantro extract protected against lead-induced oxidative stress.

Prevents Infection

Cilantro’s amazing health benefits make it a powerful protector against a good number of diseases – such as salmonella, cholera, and food poisoning. Cilantro is considerably effective against these ailments as a consequence of its antibacterial properties. Research has revealed that essential oil obtained from cilantro is useful against Listeria.

Safeguards Against Diabetes

In an animal study, cilantro extract was found to help lower blood glucose levels and support healthy liver function where diabetes exists. The researchers involved in the investigation, upon following their findings, have recommended that cilantro extract be present in the diets of diabetics.

Restaurant Chain Exposed For Refusing To Hire “Old White Guys”

Click here to view the original post.
Old white guys discriminated against

Old white guys being kept out the restaurant industry as a matter of corporate policy.

One of America’s largest restaurant operators had a policy of not hiring “old white guys.” It’s true.
A manager at Seasons 52 admitted the chain did not employ “old white guys,” a lawsuit filed by the U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission (EEOC) alleged. “We don’t hire people over 40,” another manager allegedly admitted.
The EEOC found 254 people who claimed they were not hired at Seasons 52 because of their age, The Orlando Sentinel reported. Seasons 52 is a chain of upscale wine bars and grills, owned by Darden Restaurants.
Seasons 52 managers refused to hire older people as waiters in order to project a “young and hip image,” the EEOC alleged. The discrimination was a “top-down” policy at the chain and not the work of rogue restaurant managers, the EEOC alleged.
We Don’t Hire People Over 40
The number of older people working at Seasons 52 did not match the age of the population a statistical report from the University of California at Irvine introduced as evidence revealed. The EEOC statistics did not show whether the number of white people working at Seasons 52 reflected the population.
Darden Restaurants is a publically-traded Fortune 500 company that owns the Olive Garden, Longhorn Steak House, Capital Grill, the Yard House, Bahama Breeze, Eddie V’s, Seasons 52, and Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen restaurant brands. Darden operates more than 1,700 restaurants and employees 175,000 people in the United States and Canada.
Darden agreed to settle the lawsuit for $2.85 million on May 3, The Sentinel reported. The company also agreed to retrain Seasons 52 managers not to discriminate, and to offer all the older people discriminated against a chance to reapply for jobs.
The lawsuit only covered the Seasons 52 restaurants and not the rest of the Darden brands. News stories did not say if discrimination against older white job applicants was happening at other Darden-owned eateries.
Discrimination against older workers in Florida’s restaurant and tourism industries is a pervasive problem, Robert Weisberg an attorney at the EEOC office in Miami revealed. Many restaurants, hotels, and hospitality businesses simply refuse to hire persons over a certain age.
Why Older People need Off Grid Jobs and Businesses
The Seasons 52 case demonstrates why older Americans need to consider self-employment, freelance work, and the gig-economy instead of the job market.
It is very easy for managers, and business owners to discriminate against people because of age, faith, or race and get away with it. Contrary to popular belief, most bigots are smart enough to beat the system when it comes to discriminating.
One way to protect yourself from discrimination in the job market is to be your own boss. Having job skills or products that you can market directly to customers is the best way to keep income coming in, in today’s changing economy.
Older and white Americans that rely on the job market are likely to be facing more discrimination in the years ahead. Millennials (persons under 37) will outnumber Baby Boomers (people aged 54 to 72) for the first time in 2018, Pew Research reported. There are currently around 74 million Millennials and about 73 million Baby boomers in the United States.

Making Sunscreen Yourself Improves Health

Making your own sunscreen is a healthy alternative to mainstream brands

We’ve been brainwashed easily into assuming that UV light is a carcinogen as dangerous as a cigarette. Far from the truth. The reality is, acquiring adequate daylight is essential for use as your body’s naturally-occurring creation of vitamin D. Moreover, you can find an increasing body of evidence relating minimized sunlight exposure to the major killers of our time. Scientists around the globe are starting to convey new data that increases the correlation between reduced sun exposure and higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, bone-related diseases, along with other typical health issues.

However, overexposure to sunshine isn’t beneficial either. Skin area damage, including burning, peeling, spotting, and wrinkling may result. Your solution isn’t to merely apply conventional sunscreens. They genuinely are crammed with chemical substances, including estrogen-like ingredients that could, in fact, increase tumor production.

Alternatively, how about making sunscreen that’s pure in quality by using vitamin C powder? This type of powder is rather cheap and is also sold by many providers. Vitamin C has a substantial part in lessening the impact of free-radical damage, and in this role, it can be particularly useful when it comes to securing against UV light damage. It could also be absorbed into your cells and is usually still prevalent approximately 36 hours after you have put it on your skin. For this reason, it may continue to ensure that you get sun relief even after you’ve washed the skin on your body and went swimming.

Here’s a simple recipe for making sunscreen on your own:

Combine two tablespoons of vitamin C powder in eight ounces of water. Put the solution into a spraying container and spray yourself with it regularly (say, every single hour or thereabouts). Vitamin C fails very rapidly inside of solution, which means you don’t want to make it in huge portions except if you’re doing it for a family gathering!

Preparation For Nuclear Apocalypse Triggered By Strange Sounds

Click here to view the original post.

A video apparently filmed in New York City on April 19, 2018, has become the most popular point of contention among conspiracy theorists. The film reveals bizarre trumpet-like sounds coming out of the underground, and conspiracy theorists have speculated the fact that the government is secretly constructing an underground tunnel to guard the elites in preparation for nuclear apocalypse.

In the video, the noise which supposedly comes from below ground seems to be recurring several times per day. A YouTube conspiracy theory channel known as ‘Sky net 5’, uploaded the clip, and up to now, it has garnered more than 3,000 views. Many viewers shared different explanations for the weird phenomenon, with the majority contending that the bureaucrats are making a secret subterranean tunnel to protect them during the occasion of a nuclear apocalypse. Other people asserted that CERN is digging tunnels below the surface of the earth.

A YouTube user named Jennifer Heath drew a parallel between the strange sounds and the great tribulation period, along with the second coming of Christ. “Since September 23, 2017 Revelation 12 in the skies, since then it seems like everything has excelled, just look around the planet. I know Jesus Christ said great tribulation such as the world has never seen, and we are already tilting in head of a pole shift and that would alone be massive+not forgetting wars+rumours of wars, horrific weather conditions, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions,” Heath declared.

“These are Trumpets sounds, not the brass ones, the old testament Trumpets sounds, from the longhorn being blown, is vibration from blowing the longhorn Trumpets from heavens. God is trying to get our attention. This is warning from God to us all for us to ask for forgiveness for our sins,” stated another user by the name of Bridget Lazenby.

These stories are evidently not the first ones that have surfaced online concerning secret underground tunnels supposedly built during preparation for nuclear apocalypse. A month ago, conspiracy theorists sensationally alleged that there’s an entire city within the underground of the Denver airport, and that it has been created to safeguard the elites in the event of a new atomic cataclysm. These theorists even argue that there’s a secret train running underground from the White House to this particular city.

7 Must-Have Herb Plants to Give You a Bug-Free Backyard

Click here to view the original post.

After a long spring, there’s nothing better than enjoying the outdoors.  We can’t wait to get outside to do yard work, ride bikes, garden, grill out or to enjoy Smores around a campfire.  However, it’s not long before the pesky bugs arrive to drive us all crazy!

How often have you and your family wanted to eat outside but you all go back inside because of the bugs?  Swatting away bugs and getting bitten can ruin a perfect summer night!  Our quick fix is to pull out the bottles of bug spray.  But not only does using bug spray get expensive but who wants to spray DEET on themselves and their kids intentionally?

Here’s the good news.  We don’t have to hide inside to avoid these annoying bugs.  There are natural ways to combat them instead.  So this summer, try a natural way to have a bug-free backyard this year with these seven must-have plants!

  1. Catnip:  Need a long-term stink bug repellent?  Catnip is the herb of choice!  Also repels ants, cockroaches, and squash beetles.
  1. Rosemary:  A great herb to have around to repel mosquitoes.  Plant in pots to decorate your outdoor living areas.   In addition to repelling bugs, you can use rosemary to enhance your meat dishes, add to homemade bread or to garnish a plate!
  1. Chives:  Chives is a perennial that will not only provide you with a beautiful border and endless kitchen possibilities but will keep the mites, aphids, and beetles away too!
  1. Lavender:  Though lavender is a favored scent to freshen up our homes, bugs such as fleas, mosquitoes, and flies hate it!  Lavender is a perennial, providing you with beautiful bluish-purple flowers year after year.  Not only will you keep the unwanted bugs away but you can dry your lavender bouquets to keep around the house.
  1. Basil:  Plant in pots around your deck or favorite area to spend as a family.  Basil repels two annoying pests, mosquitoes and flies.  Another benefit of having basil around is you can use it to spruce up your culinary dishes as well!
  1. Mint:  Another great mosquito repelling herb to grow in pots.  Plus, while enjoying a bug-free patio, you can pick a few mint leaves and use them to freshen up a guests tea or Mojito.
  1. Lemon Balm:  Not only does lemon balm keep biting insects away but snakes as well!  Another herb that can be planted in pots and placed around the areas that you hang out the most.  As with most herbs, you can add it to your culinary dishes or enjoy in a cup of tea.

Don’t let the bugs deter you from enjoying summer with your family.  If you are new to gardening, start small.  Buy a few pots, potting mix and herbs at your local greenhouse.  Get the kids involved too!

Leaky Gut Can Mean More Than A Stomach Ache

leaky gut

Leaky Gut can cause many serious health concerns

Lots of men and women have stomach problems. Of all the issues with your digestive tract, a “leaky gut” may be the most detrimental and difficult to deal with. Some of the reasons for this are poorly understood, but the good news is that in time, conditions can be improved greatly.

But first what’s really going on when we say “leaky gut”?

Generally, when the intestinal lining is irritated over time, toxins and germs begin to move through the wall into the bloodstream. Here are some A-league issues that could be explained by this “system-wide” inflammatory reaction:

• Arthritis

• Anxiety

• Absorption issues from foods

• Adrenal fatigue and energy and loss

• Autoimmune diseases

Leaky Gut – Short Hacks

Most healthcare practitioners see leaky gut as a condition that’s very difficult to heal. But not to worry. Some dietary changes and a few “power supplements” are definitely worth experimenting with.

Here’s five you should check out and consider:

Probiotics: A high-quality probiotic supplementation is critical to repairing leaky gut as well as for your entire gut wellness. You will need to obtain a probiotic which works for you seeing as there are many strains with each having distinct health advantages. By way of example, some variations enhance the immune system performance although others improve bodily hormone stability. You need to be confident you’re taking a probiotic specific to the actual health need you will seek out. To achieve the most beneficial effects, select a particular bacterial variety rather than using an assortment.

When you purchase your own probiotics, make sure you examine the label very carefully. You will need to recognize the genus, species, and strain. You need to know the CFU’s (colony forming units) and then to go with a probiotic made up of not less than fifteen billion CFU’s. Remember that brand caliber matters and that means you could very well have superior effects from a trusted company making use of top quality ingredients. Finally, make sure you check for helpful strains which have higher survivability rates and also pick a brand that contains multiple strains.

Fiber: The key reason why fiber can be so important is simply because probiotics need fiber to live. Specifically, prebiotics, which is usually the indigestible fibers that help probiotic bacteria thrive, are precisely the food products to incorporate into your diet plan. A diet loaded with high fiber foods such as chia seeds, sprouted flaxseed as well as hemp seeds can help your leaky gut syndrome simply by raising the probiotics in your gut along with the kinds you’re taking. You may also boost your fiber content daily by having extra steamed vegetables and fresh fruits to your meal plan.

Leaky Gut Supplements

Enzymes: Enzymes are responsible for wearing down protein, complex sugars, as well as starches, that helps to lessen digestive tract swelling. Ideally, you need to take a full range enzyme product which contains protease (pertaining to protein breakdown), amylase (intended for food made of starch), lipase (for fats), and lactase (regarding lactose in dairy foods). The best digestion benefits will probably be observed any time an enzyme supplementation is taken before or after your meals, ordinarily, 1 or 2 pills will work the very best. If you are aware of some sort of gluten or milk intolerance, subsequently looking for the precise enzyme that will help is a great solution to cure your gut and also develop digestive health.

Collagen: Collagen may be the principal support protein that gives your bones, cartilage, and tendons their strength. Health supplements are usually in powder form and will regularly be cooked to generate gelatin. Introducing this in your diet really helps to increase production of your own stomach juices, which aid in the recovery of the strength within your mucosal lining. Collagen also contains amino acids (proline and glycine) which are the building blocks in the intestinal wall.

L-Glutamine: For a necessary amino acid, L-glutamine is a potent anti-inflammatory factor. This specific compound holds significant health advantages including mending a weakened gut and intestinal tract walls. Some cells that line your digestive tract and therefore are the agent responsible for trying to keep it healthy make use of this amino acid as energy resources to solve leaky gut syndrome. The majority of people do not realize that stress depletes your quantities of L-glutamine, which will leave you susceptible to leaky gut, therefore maintaining your intake up can heal and stop intestinal tract damage.

True Heroes Live By Faith – Then Actually Do Things

Click here to view the original post.

Christians as Heroes

living by faith

True Heroes Live By Faith Which means They Do Things.

We have been talking about heroes and why it’s important to live by faith. And, we have seen that Jesus Christ is God’s archetypical hero. He defeats the dragon and wins back his bride. He does this by wisdom, courage, and self-sacrificing love.

We receive His Spirit and become partakers of His anointing when we come to Him. Like Him, we become prophets, kings, and priests. We are to speak the truth, put it into practice, and use it to bring healing. In Christ then, we become ambassadors, evangelists, soldiers, witnesses, and agents of healing. We do all this for the kingdom of God. In Christ then, we become heroes.

The words “in Christ” are the key here. The power and skill we need to fight God’s battles can never live in us. We are fallen children of Adam. All our righteousness is  of the filthy rags variety (Isa. 64:6). Even after we come to Christ, we have no good thing in ourselves whereby we may claim the blessing or power of God (Rom. 7:18). We can’t fight, let alone win, God’s battles in our own strength. We need the resurrection life of Christ. We need the power of His Holy Spirit. And at all times we need to be covered with the perfect righteousness of Jesus Christ. We also need justification and forgiveness. God gives this to us through a gospel-born faith.

By Faith
Faith comes by hearing. Paul tells us and hearing by the word of God (Rom. 10:17). Faith is a gift God gives to His people. This gift comes through the preaching of the gospel and the regenerating work of His Spirit (Eph. 2:8). Faith doesn’t grow in the natural soil of the natural man’s heart. It isn’t a work, an accomplishment, or a gift that we give to God; it’s His work in us. We do the believing and trusting. True faith is confidence and trust in Jesus Christ.  Our faith merits nothing, but it lays hold of Jesus Christ for all that we need as God’s children.

By faith, we ask for our daily bread. By faith, we ask God to heal the sick. By faith, we ask God to provide all our needs. By faith, we endure persecution (Heb. 11:36-39). By faith, we surrender to His will. But, at the end of the day… it is all the same faith. Further, our faith is in Christ “crucified and risen”.  This is the very same faith that clings to the promises of God. In Him, all God’s promises are yea and amen (2 Cor. 1:20).

When we ask God for strength, skill, wisdom or opportunity…. we always ask “for Jesus’ sake” knowing that our “asking” is based soley on His merits. These merits find power in His death and resurrection. If we take up a task for the sake of God and His kingdom, we do it by faith in Jesus Christ. So its important to remember that God receives our works for Jesus’ sake and no other reason. Even our worship and any spiritual sacrifices are only “acceptable to God by Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 2:5).

All this to say that  the faith that justifies us, is the very same faith that allows us to cling to Christ. And when we cling to him, we also receive his blessings.

But at the same time, in confessing this, we reject two errors:

First, we reject the idea that we need something other than Christ to serve Him.

Second, we reject the idea that God’s promises end with our justification. In Christ we say… God gives us all things. But the “all things” here includes our active victory over the world, the flesh, and the devil. Jesus doesn’t save us to sit on a shelf and gather dust like a bowling trophy. He saves us to serve and reign with Him (Rom. 5:17; Rev. 1:6). Again, reigning here is “active” in orientation. We’re supposed to actually do things.

Faith Without Works
James tells us that faith without works is dead (Jas. 2:14-26). Charles Shultz once captured the spirit of James’ warning in a cartoon. Snoopy stands shivering in the falling snow. Charlie Brown and Schroeder, wearing warm winter clothes. They see Snoopy from a distance and agree that they ought to provide some comfort to him. Together they walk over to Snoopy and say, “Be of good cheer, Snoopy.” And then they walk away. Not the greatest heroes.

Luther said this about faith:

Faith is a divine work in us. It changes us and makes us to be born anew of God (John 1). It kills the old Adam and makes altogether different people, in heart and spirit and mind and powers, and it brings with it the Holy Spirit. Oh, it is a living, busy, active, mighty thing, this faith. And so it is impossible for it not to do good works incessantly…

Faith is a living, daring confidence in God’s grace, so sure and certain that a man would stake his life on it a thousand times. This confidence in God’s grace and knowledge of it makes men glad and bold and happy in dealing with God and all His creatures.

And this is the work of the Holy Spirit in faith. Hence a man is ready and glad, without compulsion, to do good to everyone, to serve everyone, to suffer everything, in love and praise to God, who has shown him this grace (Commentary on Romans).

And this from Calvin:

Since faith embraces Christ as the Father offers him, and he is offered not only for justification, for forgiveness of sins and peace, but also for sanctification, as the fountain of living waters, it is certain that no man will ever know him aright without at the same time receiving the sanctification of the Spirit . . . (The Institutes).

Finally, from the Westminster Shorter Catechism (1674):

Q. 8. How is Jesus Christ offered to us in the gospel?
A. Jesus Christ is offered to us in the gospel, as priest, prophet, and king; and we must receive him if we would be saved by him.

When we receive Christ, we become partakers of His anointing. We, too then, become prophets, kings, and priests… active agents of the kingdom of God in this world. We become His heroes.

Our battles and challenges may be big or small. They may be personal or public. But God calls us, day in and day out… to fight the good fight and overcome by faith.

Russian Military Spending Less Than Previously Thought

Russian military spending

Russia faces tough budget choices as geopolitical ambitions increase.

Russian military spending has taken a huge financial hit according to a new study. The report suggests that Russia’s economic troubles have put a dent in Moscow’s aspirations to continue with high defense spending, but the 20 percent figure does require some context to be fully understood. Russian military modernization will proceed forward in the next year, but the Kremlin will increasingly have to make some tough choices.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia has attempted to emerge with an invigorated military under President Vladimir Putin. Putin’s strategy was to increase the defense budget gradually over time. A growing economy and rising oil prices, the pace of Russian military modernization further sped up after the 2008 Russo-Georgian War, which revealed the continued structural flaws in Russia’s military capabilities.

Five decades later, significant investments into the Russian army paid off when the country utilized its increasingly sophisticated and competent military during conflicts with Ukraine as well as Syria.

At the same time Putin was flexing Russian muscle in Ukraine and Syria; however, the country was hit with the “double whammy” of lowered energy prices and some tough sanctions from the USA.

The Russian recession from 2014 To 2017 also forced the Kremlin to make some hard financial decisions. As the recent study indicates, this included a substantial decrease in Russia’s military spending.

What do you think? Is this real or fake news?

Now that the weather in 2018 has finally warmed up, more of us are outside working in our gardens, farms and around the house. Along with all the new activity usually comes cuts, burns and even severe wounds

This time of year doctors usually see a rise in outdoor injuries because folks aren’t ready to get back at outdoors work after spending a long winter inside with
For cuts, scrapes and minor punctures, honey is a no-brianer. This means having a jar in your medicine kit.

For deeper wounds and abscesses, clean up the injury site thoroughly. I always use tea tree oil for this. Then use honey to heal by filling the would cavity. Next, use a dressing pad to keep out dirt and other infections as well as to keep the honey at the wound site.

Changing the dressing once daily is usually all that’s required. If the wound generates a significant amount of drainage, then more frequent changes may be necessary. Rule of thumb: Change the dressing once every five days until the drainage stops.

I love honey because it’s inexpensive and readily available. The gauze dressing pads will cost you more than the honey. Some of the best and least expensive dressing pads are panty liners and sanitary napkins. Many manufacturers now have an adhesive backing, which makes them even more convenient.

Finally, Don’t purchase over-processed (almost always overheated and over filtered) honey found in your grocery store. A much better option would be to use raw, unheated honey from a local farmer or health food store. Always shop “local” if you can. There’s usually a beekeeper in every community.

The Seven Minute Pain Solution

Click here to view the original post.
Off-The-Grid Pain Solution

Many Americans continue to look for the perfect alternative pain solution.

You can’t survive without pain.  That might sound surprising, but the truth is, pain alerts you when you are overstressing a specific part of your body.  It also indicates a potentially chronic condition that will keep reoccurring over time. Pain could definitely represent an acute condition as well which still needs to be dealt with. Both situations require a pain solution.

Fortunately, we’re left with some great alternatives including one fascinating pain solution. These off-the-grid options do not require prescription drugs which often have some terrible side effects. One favorite fix for pain is power that is electrostatic in nature. And, believe it or not, static electricity, the very same kind you experience with a shock when you touch an object in a cold, dry environment, can be used to relieve a lot of suffering and pain. Allow me to explain.

Maintaining Cellular Balance To Maximize Your Pain Solution

Every single living cell within your body has both a positive and negative charge. It is the balance of these charges that lead to a state of wellness. An imbalance, on the other hand, leads to degradation, malfunction and varying levels of disease. You may have heard that the cells are more alkaline if an area of your body has a negative charge. Usually, less blood flowing to the area of concern also means a lower temperature in that area.

Conversely, when an area of the body has a positive charge, the cause is usually cellular hyperactivity. Excess tissue acids, along with inflammation, swelling, warmth, and pain accompany this over-activity. To help reverse these problems, you will need to present additional negatively charged particles (electrons) to the area.

Creating Your Own Electrostatic Treatment Hack

One of the easiest ways to create a significant amount of usable negative “healing” electrons is using polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plumbing pipe and a small piece of fuzzy material. You can purchase PVC pipe from a building supply firm, any home improvement store, or online I suppose.  All you need is one to two feet of 1 1/2-inch pipe. By the way, at this length, its usually considered to be scrap. One of the best choices for the fuzzy material is the somewhat wild-looking polyester fake fur that can be found in fabric and craft stores.

To make a pain relief charge, take the PVC pipe in one hand and rub the piece of fuzzy material back and forth across it. For best results, move the charged PVC pipe slowly back and forth over the area, keeping it from the surface of your skin.

Important: By rubbing the PVC against the material, you recharge the pipe. If you happen to touch the pipe against your skin, you won’t get fried. However, you will have to “reload” the PVC from time to time.

Repeat the procedure until you feel relief.

The results can be quite dramatic. In fact, many folks begin to feel better within seven minutes. (Some even sooner.) That said, there is no set time period for treating a problem area. Sometimes it’s 15-20 minutes.

Bottom line: stubborn areas may take longer.  It took me almost an hour to get rid of a migraine one time.

Making The Switch To Warm Weather Survival Gear

Click here to view the original post.
summer survival gear

Making the switch to summer survival gear should be a top priority.

In case you hadn’t noticed … summer is almost here. It seems like the new year started just last week, and now we’re easing up on the halfway point for this year. Ski parkas and snow boots are gone and it’s time to dig out the camping gear and dust it off. It’s time to switch to warm weather survival gear.

With the seasons changing and the temperature along with them, it’s also time to take a fresh look at your survival kit. It’s all too easy to take that gear for granted, once you’ve got it put together; kind of like checking off the box and then forgetting it. But just because you’ve got a survival kit, EDC bag or bug out bag put together, doesn’t mean that you can set it aside and just forget about it.

If you’re anything like me, you probably have multiple survival kits. I keep one in each of my vehicles, one with my fishing gear, my EDC bag that’s always with me and my bug out bag in the hall closet. While these aren’t all the same, each is intended to help me survive, should the need arise.
But I might go a bit farther than most people, especially with my EDC bag.

That kit gets used quite a bit, as it doesn’t just contain survival gear, but things that I might use to take care of life’s little problems. So whether I’m grabbing a safety pin to take care of a split seam in my clothing, using the lighter to light up someone’s birthday cake, or taking the rain poncho out in a storm, things seem to migrate out of my kits, unless I make a conscious effort to put them back.

Reviewing your kit (or kits) once in a while gives you the opportunity to check on the condition of your gear, remind you of what you have in the bag and make an honest appraisal about what might need to be replaced. At the same time, you might find that you’re missing something important, which you didn’t realize when you first put it together. So periodic checks are an essential part of staying prepared.

Seasonal Changes
Most people’s kits need to be looked at twice a year for seasonal appropriateness; once in the spring and once in the fall. The first thing you want to look for in your survival kit are things that need to change with the seasons. Updating to warm weather survival gear a pretty important consideration.

Warm hats and gloves that you need for the winter are not appropriate for the warm summer months. That warm hat should be replaced by something that will protect you from the sun, not something that will keep your ears from getting frostbite. Warm winter gloves need to be replaced with lightweight work gloves and winter coats should be replaced with a windbreaker or rain gear.

Seasonal weather changes affect other things as well. Summertime can be a time of drought in some parts of the country. Whereas you might be able to melt snow for drinking water in the wintertime, you may have to depend more on the water you can carry in summer.

Some Things Just Don’t Last
If you leave a survival kit in your car, boat or anyplace else that can get hot, you might be surprised at the things that go bad in it. Many types of fire starting tinder will go dry from the heat, rendering them useless. My favorite tinder or cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly will only stay good for about six months, before they dry out and I need to replace them.

Food is another thing that you need to check carefully. Heat can affect many types of food negatively, such as dried fruits. Most dried fruits aren’t totally dry when you add them to your kit, but sitting in a hot car trunk will dry them out the rest of the way, making them too hard if not impossible to chew. Other foods, like jerky, can become moldy with time, rendering them useless. I’ve even had canned goods which were part of my survival supplies go bad. Periodic replacement of these items is vital so that when you need them, they are available.

Watch out for any stored water, as well. Water expands when it is hot, obeying the laws of physics. Likewise, it expands when it is cold. This can cause water containers to burst or just from leaks. You might find yourself grabbing a bottle of water, merely to find it empty.

Lighters can also leak or even explode from the heat. While this isn’t all that dangerous, it could put you in a dangerous situation if you depend on that lighter and it doesn’t work. Pens can dry out from the heat. Check anything that can be affected by heat or cold, to make sure it is okay.

Batteries are another thing that you can’t count on lasting, without checking them regularly. I don’t know how many flashlights I’ve lost through the years, because of batteries that leaked inside them. It’s easy to think that your flashlight is okay because it has long-life alkaline batteries in it and it hasn’t been used for a while. But unless you check it, you can’t be sure.

Stuff In Your Bag Gets Used Up
As I mentioned with my EDC bag, supplies in your kit might get used up. It’s great to be able to grab a butane lighter or rain poncho when I need it. But I have to remember that those things are still part of my survival kit. Each time they are used, they need to be returned to the bag, or if the items are used up, they need to be replaced.

We should be especially careful about this with things which can be used up, like butane lighters. While it is easy to think that a disposable lighter is good for 1,000 fires, it is also easy to forget to reduce that number each time we use it. Getting caught in a survival situation, with most of the butane used up wouldn’t be great.

What Should be Updated?
Finally, we should always be on the lookout for what we should replace because we’ve found something better. New gear is coming out all the time, prompting me to buy it and check it out. While not every new survival gadget is worth changing my survival kits over, every once in a while there is something that comes out, which is. Checking my bug out bags gives me the opportunity to ensure that I have added that new piece of gear to all my kits.

One example of this, which happened to me not too long ago, involved a flashlight. I have a small survival kit which I keep in my fishing vest so that I’ll always have it with me when I go fishing. The compact flashlight I put in it was chosen for its size, more than its power. But I recently found a more powerful flashlight that was the same size. I had bought it to check it out, not thinking of this kit until I was making my bi-annual check of the kit. Then I realized that the new light was much better than what I had previously been carrying.

As you continue to gain experience in the art of preparation, you will probably encounter many new items that can perform better than what you are already using. When that happens, it only makes sense to update your kit. You may not realize it at the time when you buy it, but periodically checking your kit can give you an ideal opportunity to put that new gadget to use. Just the process of switching to warm weather survival gear provides lots of opportunities to update your kist and bugout bags.

Items That Might Be Missing From Your Family First-Aid Kit

Click here to view the original post.

You never know when a family member might get injured. Accidents, by their very nature, are unpredictable. While we might be able to say that some activities are statistically more likely to produce accidents, that doesn’t help us predict when they will come or who will receive them.

This can be even worse in a survival situation, where family members will be called on to do activities and use tools which they aren’t accustomed to.  What makes that even worse is that medical services tend to become overrun during such times, making it harder to get your loved ones the help that they need. If you happen to be in an outlying area, where you have to go a distance to get to help, that makes the situation worse.

In such a situation, your ability to provide adequate first-aid could make the difference between life or death. Few of us have training in first-aid techniques more complicated than applying a self-adhesive band-aid. Fortunately, a few supplies and a little knowledge can make all the difference in the world.

At this point, I’m going to make an assumption, as dangerous as that is. I assume that you already have a good first-aid kit. I’m not talking about a $19.95 drugstore special here, but an actual trauma kit, which allows you to treat more extensive wounds. Even then, you might be missing some crucial things.

Tourniquet

Tourniquets are used to stop excessive bleeding from the extremities. How do you know when one is needed? Whenever you see spurting blood coming out of a wound on one of the patient’s limbs. In that case, there is a risk of them bleeding out before they get to medical care.

There are many types of tourniquets on the market, made in some different ways. But there are three important things you want to keep in mind when choosing one:

  • You want something that can be used one-handed, in case you have to use it on yourself.
  • The idea of the tourniquet is to crush the veins against the bone, blocking blood flow. To do that, the ones with a windlass for tightening the tourniquet work best.
  • Buy quality. The last thing you need is a tourniquet breaking when you’re trying to use it.

Many people say that the tourniquet should be applied two inches above the wound. The problem with this is that not all wounds are nice neat round holes. Wounded veins often tear longitudinally, so if you only put the tourniquet two inches above the injury, the wound might still bleed internally. Go higher; as high as you reasonably can.

Clotting Agent

Clotting agents work by cauterizing the wound, stopping blood flow. They are ideal in situations where a tourniquet might not be usable, such as a shoulder wound. But for it to work, it needs to be pressed into the wound and held in place while it heats and cauterizes the wound.   It will be excruciating as you can imagine, so you may need some help in holding the patient down.

Steri-Strips

Open wounds, where the skin does not meet are dangerous from an infection point of view. They are also less likely to heal properly. In that case, you want something to hold the skin together. Typically, doctors use stitches for this, but you and I are not trained in suturing. Steri-strips allow you to keep that wound closed so that it can heal.

Irrigation Syringe

All wounds should be cleaned before they are bandaged. A large syringe, with a plastic (non-penetrating) needle, makes this much easier to accomplish. Any water which is clean enough to drink is sufficient for use in the syringe.

Lidocaine

This is a topical anesthetic, available in a cream, which numbs the skin. Most often used before giving an injection, it is also ideal for use around a wound, when needing to clean it.

Benzoine

Any adhesive bandage and most medical tapes need a clean surface to stick to. This can be difficult to accomplish in the field. Benzoine is a liquid product for cleansing the skin around a wound, allowing those bandages to stick.

Chest Seal

Used for sealing a chest wound, specifically for a patient which has been shot in the chest, causing what is known as a “sucking chest wound.” Without a chest seal in place, it is possible for the person to draw air in through the wound, on every breath. This will take up the space the lungs need to have to inflate, making it impossible for the person to catch a good breath.

While it is possible to make a chest seal out of any thin plastic material, such as a plastic bag and some tape, it is best to use a premade medical chest seal because it is sterile and already has the adhesive applied.

Needle Chest Decompression

The state where there is air in the lung cavity which prevents the lungs from inflating properly is called a “tension pneumothorax.” The sign that a patient is suffering this is that the veins in their neck are distended, and they can’t inhale. In such a case, the air needs to be allowed a means of escape, so that they can breathe again.

A special needle is used for this, which can be bought in a needle chest decompression kit. This kit also includes chest seals. To use the needle, find the top of the sternum and move down 1½ inches. That’s where the second rib is. There will be a bump on the sternum there. The needle needs to be inserted between the second and third rib, above the nipple.

The needle needs to be pushed in as far as it will go. There is a plastic part of the needle, which will stop it from going any further. Once inserted, remove the metal needle, leaving only the thin plastic sleeve in place. This is flexible, so will move out of the way as the lung inflates. Do not worry about hitting the lung, as if you do, it will heal.

Saran Wrap

Believe it or not, everyday plastic wrap for food is a useful first-aid supply to have on hand. Specifically, it is helpful for multiple wounds, such as those caused by a shotgun or shrapnel from a grenade. In such a case, it will be virtually impossible to bandage all the wounds properly. Wrapping the patient in Saran Wrap will at least protect the wounds from dirt and bacteria, while you are transporting them for medical care.

Nasal Pharyngeal Airway

In cases where the patient is unable to control their breathing, it is not uncommon for the tongue to fall across the airway, blocking it. Obviously, something needs to be done in these cases, to retain the airway open. There are several types of airways on the market, designed for this purpose.

The advantage of the nasal airway is that it is less uncomfortable for the patient. Inserted in the nose, they are unable to bite down on it, blocking off the airflow. Made of soft rubber, these come in different sizes. You’ll want to pick one that is the size of the patient’s pinkie. Cut it to length, from the tip of the patient’s nose to the angle of their jaw. Then push straight into the nose, not angling it up.

This type of airway should not be used in cases where there is bruising behind the ear, or the patient has blood coming out of their ear.

Why Avengers “Infinity War” Owes Christ Some Box-Office Royalties

“There was an idea to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if we could become something more, so when they needed us, we could fight the battles that they never could.”

Avengers  “Infinity War” 2018

“I don’t like bullies; I don’t care where they come from.”

Steve Rogers in Captain America:  The First Avenger (2011)

infinity Wars brings a lot heroes to the big screen

Heroes are called when there seems to be no other way out of a situation. Avengers Infinity War is no exception.

OK, I’ll admit the headline is a goofy reach. But if you read the article below, you’ll know what I’m getting at.

Last night my wife, a few of our kids and grandkids went to the new Avengers movie, Infinity Wars.  I was on a tractor at our small farm taking advantage of warmer days and extra sunlight getting ready to plant all kinds of off-the-grid goodies.  You have some time to think on a tractor, so after they left, my mind drifted towards this business of heroes who come to make broken things right again.

There’s tremendous amount of worldview archetecture in the “American movie mind” today.  Most of it acting as a kind presuppositional “given” with precious little attention paid to anything except the existential CGI moment. But seriously…

Think about it. In an unfallen world there would be no evil, no danger, no conflict of any kind to use as fodder for books, movies and the like.  Of course, in an unfallen world, men and women could still push themselves to excel. The mathematician could stretch himself to grasp abstruse mathematical concepts, but he would always have the help and support of others in the field.  The artist could wrestle with paint or marble, but he wouldn’t have to wrestle with his own sloth or pride.  The mountain climber could test his abilities on tougher and tougher cliffs and peaks, but he would never be in any real danger.

Everyone could strive for greater and greater mastery in this skill or that art, but there would never be any risk of loss or harm. In this quest for excellence, you could challenge someone to a competition, a race, contest of some sort, but the whole thing would be a stricly friendly matter, a time of mutual encouragement and true camaraderie.  In a world without sin, there would be no jealousy, animosity, or bitterness between the competitors.  Each would be happy with the outcome and perhaps even proud of the guy or gal that beat you. Here’s the rub…

Now, imagine trying to tell a story, a really riveting, high drama driven story that assumes this sinless, unfallen world I’m talking about.  Pretty tough. As a matter a fact, I don’t think it can be done. At least the kind of stories we’re used to simply wouldn’t make much sense to us.  All the stories our brains normally process in this fallen world involve real conflict.  And so, every story that does make sense to us is rooted in the Fall and the “fallout” from the fall, so to speak.

Conflict

The conflict in life (in all media and literature for that matter) begins with sin and the curse of death that seeps into our world because of that sin.  In literary analysis, we speak of any number of conflicts:

  • man v. man
  • man v. woman
  • man v. God
  • man v. himself
  • man v. society
  • man v. the State
  • man v. Nature
  • man v. the demonic or monstrous.
  • Mothra vs Godzilla (just kidding)

And so on.  Each of these conflicts involves some sort of danger … physical, spiritual, psychological, or social … to one or more of the parties involved.  Often, the actual or potential victims either can’t see the nature of the danger or they don’t have the resources to deal with it. In all of these situations , there seems to be no direct way out. Enter the need for heroes.

A hero may me a very ordinary guy.  He doesn’t have to be a superhero, a spy, or a Navy Seal. He doesn’t have to carry a six-shooter, a vibranium shield, or a light saber.  But he has to confront the danger or the inherent evil in the circumstances. He could confront with strength, wisdom, courage, maybe even love.  This much is always true though: He will do it even though the costs may be high.

What Heroes Do

Real heroes give themselves to solving the problems created by sin and the curse.  The problems may be large or small, but they all present  real and difficult challenges. The hero will normally find that these challenges come in three forms.  He may run into a mystery that must be solved, an obstacle to overcome, or a sacrifice to make.  A lot of times these challenges are all wrapped together in a package.

To solve a mystery, the hero needs wisdom.  The hero needs to think through a complicated situation. Perhaps he’s faced with a puzzle or a riddle.  I’m thinking here of detective fiction, like Arthur Conan Doyle or Agatha Christie.  Or perhaps the hero has to devise complicated tactics or strategies. (Think Mission Impossible.)  Maybe he has to invent a new live-saving technology, a medical cure, or even a weapon that stops the bad guys or aliens.  There are all sorts of dangerous situations that require research, interpretation, analysis, discovery, or invention.

And, to overcome the obstacles, the hero needs courage, boldness, and skill.  He may face physical stress, danger, even death.  Our plays, TV and movies are full of such heroes.  They may be lawmen, soldiers, knights, or superheroes.  They may be reformers, explorers, or evangelists. Often, they bring weapons or tools that they must brandish with great skill.  In the movies they may drive fast cars, fly faster planes, or be “jumpers” through hyperspace or whatever to save the day.   In real life, hereos may work on a limited budget, with limited resources and without political or legal leverage.

Then there’s the word sacrifice.  Most people are capable of showing love.  But the real hero must love profoundly, often love the unlovely and with question, this love comes with a big price tag.  That’s we say the true hero loves sacrificially.  And it’s with great purpose that He lays down his life for his friends.

The most engaging stories challenge the hero on all three levels. He must solve the riddle or come up with a clever plan.  He must act on his solution, his plan, with great courage, power and skill.  His motivations are pure … he must challenge the conflict out of self-sacrificing love.  He will risk his life.  Given all this, it is no accident that popular literature divides itself into mysteries, action/adventure, and stories of relationship.  It’s no accident that readers, viewers and listeners divide themselves along the same lines.  (so does Netflix and Hulu)

God’s Hero

Jesus Christ is the archetypical Hero. He came into this world to undo the work of the Fall.  The gospel calls Him Messiah or Christ, the Anointed One. As Messiah, Jesus is the anointed Prophet, King, and Priest and the head of our salvation.  He saves His people through wisdom, courageous action, and self-sacrificing love.

First, Jesus came as our Prophet.  He came with divine wisdom.  No human wisdom or philosophy could ever have foreseen the cross because no human wisdom or philosophy sees sin as a problem, let alone takes sin seriously.  The gospel of redemption was a mystery hid in the heart of God.  But Jesus came in time and space to reveal the plan of redemption as well as fulfill it.  By His words and actions, He has revealed the Father to us, along with the realization of His incredible wisdom and love. Fortunately for us, He continues to speak to us through His word.

Jesus also came as a conquering King. He was not a martyr.  The cross wasn’t a mistake.  Jesus steadfastly pursued His mission all the way to the finish line: the cross. There, He took on sin.  In His resurrection He defeated death itself. Now He reigns from His Father’s right hand with all of the collective power in heaven and on earth at His disposal.  He continues to gather and defend His Church and press the claims of His kingdom to the ends of the earth.  One day He will return in glory as Judge. (a very bad story ending for those in unbelief)

Lastly, Jesus came as our great High Priest.  He loved His people and gave Himself for His church.  But not just that … He gave His life to redeem us from sin and all the broken glass that goes with it.  We all know that  pain, don’t we? The good news is that He continues to intercede for us at the Father’s right hand. He knows our failings, our weakness and provides help in ways we could never understand.

Conclusion

Every literary hero, every flesh and blood hero, at the end of the day … must imitate Christ.  I guess that why G.A. Henty said only Christians could be true heroes. It’s a matter of metaphysics after all.

Some heroes imitate a single aspect or dimension of Christ’s threefold office more than the other two.  Others are “well rounded” in their heroism. Sometimes heroes come in sets: the man with wisdom and a plan; the man of action who makes things happen; and the man (or more often the woman) who feels compassion and empathy for those who are hurting.  But listen, not one of us can be Jesus and be hero at this ultimate and infallible level. But every child of God is called and equipped to imitate Jesus Christ.  We are all called to courage, so we can be heroes for Jesus sake.  But as we move into action and purpose, we must always remember that we don’t control the outcomes. Not our pay grade as they used to say.

Our duty, as image bearers is to dive into the roaring flood waters to save whoever is trouble knowing that we as well as the drowning victim may very well perish in the attempt.

Are you ready to dive in? Are you ready to be part of the rescue team? Or…

Are you a “hot tub hero,” happy to live life without conflict and sacrifice?

Important Home Defense Reminders

Click here to view the original post.
home defense can save your life

Being prepared for a home invasion could be the difference between life and death.

As a home owner, home defense is something you have to always be concerned about. Never forget, the possibility of a burglary or home invasion get increased in hard times. You can’t just assume that you will never become the victim of such an invasion, which is why you must take the proper steps to become prepared for it.

Home defense isn’t just about defending your home from intruders. It’s also about protecting your possessions, yourself, and your family.  This is why knowing even basic home defense techniques is essential.

Here are the top five tips for home defense:

Fortify Your Doors and Windows

Your doors and windows are the most obvious points of entry into your home, which is why they need to be fortified first.

The first thing you need to change out on your doors, at least on your doors that lead outside, are the locks and hinges.  Have all of your hinges and locks on your outside doors removed and replaced with heavy duty variations that are more difficult to break into.

That being said, most doors on Americans homes, including doors that lead outside, are made out of wood or some other easily breakable material. So even if a burglar fails to break your locks or hinges, they could still beat down the door itself first with little more than a sledgehammer or even a rifle stock. This is why all of your doors that lead outside should be constructed out of metal so they cannot be easily broken down.

If an intruder fails to break through your doors, the windows will be their next target. In fact, a burglar may actually go for your windows before the doors.

As with your doors, your windows need to be replaced with alternatives that are not so easily broken down.  The best material for windows is acrylic glass, which you will find under names such as Plexiglas, Lucite, and Acrylite.  Acrylic glass looks just like normal glass, but is far more difficult to break through.

Keep Your Home Defense Gun(s) Within Easy Reach

You have a variety of different tools available at your disposal to home defense, but easily the most effective of those tools is a firearm.

Regardless of which specific firearm you opt to use for home defense, two things need to be done: your firearm needs to be secured, and it needs to be within easy reach of you.

The best solution here is to purchase a fingerprint identification safe that you keep right next to your bed or nightstand.  This way, your home defense gun is kept out of the hands of children or visitors in your home, but it’s also easily accessible by you.

Some would even recommend that you should carry a pistol on you at all times in your home, because even if you have a shotgun in a closet you may not be able to get to it in time or could be blocked off from the intruder depending on where they entered.

Have A Guard Dog

Not only are guard dogs highly intimidating to intruders, they be able to sense danger before you do and will alert you to it.  You could then grab your gun and run to investigate  instead of being caught off guard.

The moment an intruder hears your dog barking, they may turn around and run for fear of being caught.  This is why even small dogs don’t make horrible guard dogs; even though they’re not intimidating, they are equally alert as larger breeds.

If you can’t have a guard dog for whatever reason or just don’t want one, at the very least you could set up a “Beware of Dog” sign on your property.  It’s amazing how effective these kinds of signs and posters are at deterring criminals.

Have A Safe Room

A safe room is any room where you and your family can retreat to in the event of a home invasion. Your safe room needs to fulfill several criteria: it must be somewhere hidden and not so obvious (such as in the walls or under the floor), it must be locked so no one from the outside can get in easily even if they do find it, and it should be well stocked with supplies such as food, water, ammunition, and first aid equipment.

In a disaster scenario, your safe room could be where your family retreats to stay clear of the danger where you.  In a simple home invasion, it could be where you send your children while you go to confront the danger.

Never Make It Seem Like No One Is Home

This is perhaps the most overlooked home defense tip of all. Experienced burglars are always on the lookout for homes they know are empty.

There are multiple steps you can take to make it always seem like that someone is home: don’t announce your vacation plans on social media, load up your car for vacation in your garage rather than out in your driveway, and always keep the lights and TV on even when you’re not around.

Self-Reliant Beer Making Basics

Click here to view the original post.

True self-reliance means making your own beer!

As more and more people try to live a self sufficient lifestyle, they’re turning to producing more of their food at home as their ancestors did before them.  Just about every culture has a tradition of brewing, or preserving food or purifying water through fermentation.

These days, home brew kits and malt extracts take the work out of home brewing and allow you to buy an all inclusive box of ingredients, mix, ferment and drink your brew with minimal effort.  The problem with kits, is that they’re often expensive and you lose control over the final outcome of your brew.  Once you learn how easy it truly is to brew beer traditionally, using naturally malted grain and hops, you’ll truly have the tools to take back the fermenting tradition of those real beer making pioneers that came before us.

Choosing Your Ingredients

Traditionally made beer is a simple thing, consisting of only 4 ingredients: malted grain, hops, yeast and water.  With that in mind, it’s easy to make your first simple all grain beer by choosing a straightforward barley base malt, such as a lightly roasted “two row malt” to use as the bulk of your grain (8 to 10 lbs total).  To add color and a bit of body, try adding half a pound to a pound of crystal malt or rye.  The malt grain is ground before brewing to increase surface area and improve sugar extraction.

For hops, the choices are endless, and each strain tastes very different, but as a guide, hops are rated by alpha acid.  Alpha acid determines how bitter the hops will come out in the final boil, and the higher the alpha acid the more “hoppy bitterness” will come through in the brew, such as in an IPA.  Hops are necessary to preserve and flavor the beer, choose 2 to 4 ounces as a starting point, and modify from there.

Yeasts profoundly affects the flavor, and there are hundreds of varieties, including wild ferments or special strains from famous commercial brands.  A basic yeast such as Chico yeast for making a west coast pale ale or a London ale yeast will serve well for more of an English style brew.

Mashing

While malt extracts have already done most of the mashing, or extracting of sugars from the malt, in all grain home brew you will need to mash the grain yourself.  In mashing you’re creating an enzymatic reaction in the grain, and using water at different temperatures to regulate the extraction of sugars from the grain.

When grain is soaked in water and held between 130 and 150 degrees F, the enzymes within the grain convert the starches into readily fermentable sugars that will form the alcoholic content of your beer.  At higher temperatures, between 154 and 167 degrees F, the enzymes create longer chain sugars which do not ferment well, but will add to the sweetness and body of your final brew.  Often brewers will add hot water to their grain, and work to keep it at one temperature for a period of time, before adding more hotter water to then change the enzymatic reaction and extract longer chain sugars to create a well rounded beer.  This is called a “two rest mash” because the grain is resting in the water at two different temperatures.  For your fist brew, try keeping the grain between 130 and 150 for an hour, before adding more hot water to raise the temperature and hold it between 154 and 167 for an additional half hour.

After you’ve extracted the sugars in your mash, it’s time to boil your beer, also known as cooking the wort.

Cooking The Wort

In this stage, your sugar water extracted from the malt is boiled to extract the alpha acid from the hops and sterilize your brew to kill any ambient yeasts.  Alpha acids are hard to extract from hops, and the longer you boil, the more bitterness you extract from the hops.  The trick is, the longer you boil, the more volatile flavor compounds are lost from the hops.  Ideally, hops would be added at different stages throughout the boil, the first addition used to add bitterness, and then hops added at the end would contribute flavor compounds.  Try boiling your wort for 1 hour, adding 1 ounce of hops at the start and then adding another 2 ounces at the 45 minute mark, before stopping the boil at 1 hour.

Cooling the Wort and Pitching Yeast

After the boil, the wort needs to be cooled as quickly as possible, because the rapid cooling causes any strange proteins extracted from the malt to drop out of suspension and keeps them out of your final brew.  A good way to do this is to take your brew pot in the winter, and plop it into a snow bank to cool until it reaches roughly 80 degrees F.  In the absence of a snow bank, cool water in the batch tub will also work.

Once your brew is cool, “pitch the yeast” or add your yeast to begin the ferment.

Fermenting

Once you’ve added your yeast, the beer will need to be moved to a fermentation vessel that allows the carbon dioxide produced by the yeast to escape, but does not allow oxygen in. This environment promotes yeast fermentation, and prevents your brew from turning into vinegar.  A simple water lock, made with a balloon or by taking a piece of tubing secured in an air tight manner onto your fermentation vessel, and placing the end in a jar of water will work.

Allow your beer to ferment for at least 2 weeks, in a place with consistent warm room temperatures, ideally 65 to 75 degrees.  Variations in temperature, or low temperatures can cause your brew to take longer to ferment or create off flavors.

Bottling

Once your beer has fermented, it’s time to bottle.  Ideally, most of the fermentable sugar has been used by the yeast and you’ll need to add a slight bit more at the end to get your bottles to carbonate.  Corn sugar is most commonly used, but table sugar or any other fermentable sugar can be used in a pinch.  Try adding 1 ounce for a 5 gallon batch.  Pour into bottles, cap, and wait 2 weeks for the bottles to carbonate.

At this point, your bottles are ready to drink, and you’re ready to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Food Storage Done In Phases

Click here to view the original post.

Food storage can be very important

Long term food storage is best done in phases.

Do you already have a short-term food storage plan or stockpile that will last you a week, a month, or three months?  Are you ready to now plan for an even longer period of food storage?  Long-term food storage is a form of stockpiling food meant to sustain you for months and even years.  With a long-term stockpile of food, you will be able to weather events ranging from job loss to a large-scale catastrophe without going hungry.

When you begin your preparedness plan for a long-term food storage stockpile, you want to know what items you should select for storage, in what amounts, and how to best store these food items (not only in what sort of container but also where).  This article will address suggested items for long-term storage, containers and storage locations, and how to estimate your long-term needs so that you have the most useful stockpile possible.

STEP ONE: ARE YOU READY TO BEGIN LONG-TERM FOOD STORAGE?

When should you begin long-term food storage?  Before beginning, you should have a shorter-term stockpile in place.  If you are just beginning to put together a food supply, begin with a very short time period, such as a week, and then double that to two weeks, and from there a month, and increase until you have a two to three-month supply of stored food. The long-term stockpile planning and supply comes when you already have a good shorter term stockpile in place, and you now want to extend your supply to ensure survival for much longer time periods.

STEP TWO: WHAT TO STORE

Grains and dried beans are the main items you will need for long-term storage. Rice, pasta, dried beans, nuts, & flour and other grains can last for decadesunder the right conditions.

Is your long-term stockpile sustainable? Can you plan for meat to be available “on the hoof” by raising it now, and having a sustainable breeding herd or flock?  Will you fish as part of your long-term stockpile? If yes, plan to lay away extra hooks and a rod or two, and develop fishing skills now if you don’t already have them.  While beans and nuts, livestock and fish can provide protein, also consider peanut butter, and freeze dried meats, items which are probably already a part of your shorter term stockpile.

Another consideration for long-term sustainability in your stockpile or food storage plan is to plan edibles into your landscape with plants like blueberries, raspberries, apples, pears, mushrooms, and nut trees. Edible landscaping is an investment in time and plants that you can enjoy now, and may help to sustain your stockpile in a time of great need—and it won’t take up space in the same way your main stockpiled food does.  You will need sources of fruit and vegetables to meet nutritional needs.  For example, scurvy can be deadly, but it is easily prevented with the vitamin C found in fruits.

Plan to include leavening agents like yeast, baking powder, baking soda, a sweetener such as sugar, and oils.  Salt is essential: do not forget to include a supply of salt in your stockpile!

Don’t forget about non-edible essentials: water treatment (such as bleach), toilet paper, buckets, jars, and bags to store items, seeds, mix, and planting trays, canning and drying supplies, cooking & food preparation tools and a source of heat, and any supplies needed to care for livestock or pets.

What about coffee?  Is it a luxury, or will you make room for it in a long-term stockpile?  While the long-term food supply is meant for survival, you need to determine what you actually need, and something like coffee might be ok to skip for you, but not for someone else. Similarly, you may choose to store powdered milk, but others may skip it.  You need to plan for your individual tastes, and your budget.

Buying items you will not eat is a waste. In some ways, the long-term readymade food kits available for purchase may not be right for you.  Why? They have an expiration date, and might consist of foods you don’t currently eat, or would not eat unless in an emergency.  A well planned stockpile is made up of items you eat now, but that store well.  You can keep a stockpile up to date by cooking from it, and then shopping to replenish your stockpile instead of shopping to replenish your kitchen cupboards. With a readymade kit, unless you plan to use it and replenish, you are essentially purchasing a time capsule of food that will have lost all nutritional value once it ages to a certain date.

Similarly, don’t buy items you can’t prepare, and plan to have needed tools for preparing what you do store.  It does no good to have ingredients without the tools and means to prepare and cook them.  For example, if you are storing canned items, is your can opener electric, or do you have at least two manual can openers (two because they do break)? Do you have a plan for how you will heat or cook food without electricity if needed?  Do you have the equipment needed to do so?

STEP THREE: WHERE TO STORE IT

For the longest storage, your stockpile should be in a relatively cool and dry location. Items will store longer if they are stored between 50 and 70 F. A cool cellar or basement may be ideal if you can store food in airtight containers to prevent dampness from spoiling your supply. Pests are another consideration, which will be discussed under with containers in step four, below.

Your stockpile should be accessible for rotating and replenishment of items.  Rotating items is a term for using items in your stockpile before they expire their useful life, while replenishing your supply with a similar fresher item.

You also may want to test your stockpile, by using it for a week or longer, and seeing what planning gaps you come up with, or items that you need to consider adding, or removing, or substituting.

Visibility of your food supply is another consideration.  You want your stockpile easily accessible to you, but you may not want to have it readily visible to all visitors.  Take some time to consider the best location for your long-term and short-term stockpiles.

STEP FOUR: HOW TO STORE IT

For long-term food storage, you have to consider preserving your supply against the enemies of moisture, air exposure and temperature, and finally: pests. As mentioned above, a cool cellar or basement may be ideal for your long-term stockpile if you can seal food items away from moisture and pests.

Do you have shelving? Clean and reuse glass jars with tight lids, or even store grains in clean soda bottles.  If you need to buy jars, Mason jars are great, and Weck jars are amazing.  Buy extra in the event you need them for canning or pickling.

Use food safe PETE plastic lidded buckets to store, sort, and stack items.  These buckets are available for from local bakeries or an online supply.  If you have used a food sealer, toss sealed items in a lidded stackable bucket to further protect them from vermin or sudden environmental changes, and to organize foods by type or time period.

Be sure your containers are food safe, or that you have protected your supply from contact with a potentially toxic item.  For example, if you are using a non-food safe container, line it with a food safe bag or use a food sealer to package items before storing them.  Consider using Mylar to create packets (it heat seals quite easily).

Dried foods will last longer the less they are exposed to oxygen.  Consider adding oxygen removal packets with airtight containers to reduce or eliminate oxygen in stored foods.  Note that plastic 5 gallon buckets are not airtight, and that any food stored with these packets must be at a 10% or less moisture content or you risk contracting illnesses such as deadly botulism.

STEP FIVE: ESTIMATE AMOUNTS

There are food storage calculators that you can make use of, as well as spreadsheets to track your current food use. One estimate is that one adult will need 25-31 pounds of grains (such as wheat, barley, oats, rice, corn, pasta) and 5 pounds of dried beans or nuts per month.  For that same time period, about a pound of salt, two pounds of fats, and up to 52 gallons of water will be necessary. Consider running a test from your food supply for several days or a week to determine storage levels per person.

When you are estimating amounts, don’t forget to also calculate for non-edible essentials: water treatment (such as bleach), toilet paper, buckets, jars, and bags to store items, seeds, mix, and planting trays, canning and drying supplies, cooking & food preparation tools and a source of heat, and any supplies needed to care for livestock or pets.

STEP SIX: ORGANIZE FOR LONGEVITY AND USE

Your long-term stockpile needs to be effectively labeled, so that you know not only the contents but when the items were stored. It is important to rotate stock out and replenish it. Consider cooking from your stockpile, and then replenishing it when you grocery shop rather than cooking from your grocery shopping. In this way, you have a consistently updated and fresh stockpile rather than a time capsule.

These first steps for long-term food storage should help you develop and build your own food stockpile, and ensure that it is as useful as possible.  Keep your eye out for forthcoming articles about how to begin a short-term stockpile, and how to stockpile fresh produce.

Indicting Hillary or President Trump Could Trigger A Second Civil War

Click here to view the original post.

Not simply divided, but the United States is highly polarized, angry and bitter.

Any attempt to indict either Hillary R. Clinton or President Donald J. Trump on criminal charges might trigger a 21st Century Civil War.

The similarities between the era right before the outbreak of the 19th Century Civil War and the present day political climate in America are too significant to ignore. Some of the same trends that were apparent back in 1861 can be detected in today’s politics.

Some of the disturbing similarities between 1861 America and 2018 America include:

• The belief that Donald J. Trump is an illegitimate or illegal president. One of the ostensible causes of the Civil War in 1861 was the belief by Southerners that Abraham Lincoln was not a legal or legitimate president. As the theory goes, Confederates broke away from the Union because they did not recognize Lincoln’s presidency. Maybe not the real issue, but certainly one that is drug out for public consumption.

• Around 57% of Americans between 18 and 30 branded Trump’s presidency as illegitimate in a March 2017 GoFoward poll conducted by the University of Chicago and the Associated Press.

• Percentages were higher among some groups. 74% of African Americans under 30, and 71% of Hispanics under 30 called Trump “illegitimate.”

• Increasing political violence. During the 1850s, Americans increasingly turned to violence to settle political disputes. It started with mob violence; such as the burning of newspaper offices and lynching of blacks in the North, escalated to guerrilla warfare in Bleeding Kansas, and culminated with John Brown’s assault on a federal arsenal in an attempt to start a race war in 1859. (Brown was funded by wealthy Unitarians.)

• Since President Trump’s election, there have been several incidents of disturbing political violence. The most frightening outrages; include the burning of a limousine by a mob at President Trump’s inauguration, the attempted murder of several Republican members of Congress by a leftwing gunman, and the violence at a Neo-Nazi rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

• Increasing demonization of the other side. During the Civil War, Confederates portrayed President Lincoln as a tyrant and Union troops as invading barbarians. Union propagandists branded the Confederates as traitors and slavers.

• Commentaries branding President Trump as a fascist and comparing him to historical tyrants such as the Roman Emperor Commodus are often appearing in supposedly mainstream news outlets. Former Secretary of State Madeline Albright even wrote a book in which she called Trump a fascist.

• Commentaries and websites about “Crooked Hillary” are just as common. Cambridge Analytica; a British company that worked on the 2016 Trump campaign, even bragged about “weaponizing” the phrase “Crooked Hillary.”

• During the 1850s, civility all but disappeared from politics. By 1856, things were so bad that Senator Charles Sumner was savagely beaten on the U.S. Senate floor by U.S. Representative Preston Brooks of South Carolina. Brooks’ attack was triggered by remarks that Sumner had made about his relative U.S. Senator Albert Butler.

• Violence in the Capitol has not been reported yet; but 68% of Americans said the tone of the political debate was getting worse in a CBS poll last year.

The similarities between 1861 and 2018 are too great to ignore. As in 1861, we have a deeply-divided political landscape and increasing political violence. There are two sides each claiming to represent the “True America” and each branding their opponents as un-American, traitors, and criminals.

What Could Trigger the New Civil War?

In such a climate all it would take is an effort to indict or remove a popular, but controversial political figure such as Trump or Clinton to trigger violence. Both Clinton and Trump are passionately admired by segments of the population and hated as intensely by many others.

Efforts by Republican lawmakers to get the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate and indict Hillary Clinton would spark violence, Mike Adams of Natural News Now believes. Adams even goes so far as to call the FBI “corrupt and treasonous.”

More cataclysmic would be an effort to impeach President Trump, which is more probable than is widely believed. 58 members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted to impeach the President in December 2017, Politico reported. Those voting for impeachment included one of the house’s top Democrats’ assistant Minority Leader James Clyburn (South Carolina), The Hill reported.

An impeachment vote might succeed; and trigger violence, if Democrats take control of the House in November’s Congressional election. Many observers believe Democrats will pick up enough seats to control the House and be in a position to impeach in January 2019.

So what would 21st Century Civil War look like for us?

The possibility of a 21st Century Civil War is too great to be ignored. Preparing for such a conflagration is difficult because nobody knows what it would be like.

A likely scenario would be a cyberwar in which hackers try to destroy the other side’s digital infrastructure with everybody else caught in the crossfire. Another strong possibility would the use of the courts, law enforcement, Congress, and the media to demonize elements of the population and deprive them of their Constitutional rights. Other possibilities might be terrorism, guerrilla warfare, lynching, civil disobedience, riots, and the use of drones as weapons by ordinary citizens.

A 21st Century Civil War would not be fought with cavalry and bayonets, but it is likely to be just as destructive and as divisive as the conflict 163 years ago. All Americans need to start thinking about such a Second Civil War and how to survive it as we move closer to the November elections. We live in interesting times.

Will Volkswagen’s 82 Billion Dollar Bet On Electric Cars Crush Tesla?

Click here to view the original post.

German carmaker makes enormous investment in electric cars. Do they know something the rest of us don’t?

It is Volkswagen (OTC: VLKAY) and not Tesla Motors (NASDAQ: TSLA) that holds the electric-vehicle future. If just one-third of VW’s electric ambitions bear fruit, Tesla is doomed.

The German-auto giant plans to spend $82.5 billion on electrification; an unidentified source told Reuters. Fortune reported in November 2017 that VW has as many as 80 electric models on the drawing board. Note: Volkswagen itself refused to comment on this rumor which means it is nothing but speculation.

Some important specifics that indicate the rumor might be true include:

  • Those plans will include five electric models in China by 2025, Volkswagen China CEO Jochem Heizmann told The Financial Times. Production of the first VW electric vehicles in the People’s Republic is supposed to begin in 2018.
  • Volkswagen plans to start building its first all-electric vehicle in the United States by 2020, Electrek reported. They will build the I.D. Crozz Concept sport utility vehicle (SUV) in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a Volkswagen press release stated.
  • A second electric vehicle, the e-Golf hot hatchback, will also be built at Chattanooga at some point in the future.
  • Production of the e-Golf in Germany will be doubled to meet demand.
  • Volkswagen plans to market two electric cars in California: the e-Golf and the ID Cross by 2019, Green Car Reports revealed.
  • VW subsidiary Electrify America announced that it would build 500 fast-charging stations across the United States by June 2019, The Verge reported. Chargers will be installed at dealerships, and on highways, Porsche Cars North America CEO Klaus Zellme told Automotive News.
  • Volkswagen subsidiary Porsche is planning two electric models: the Mission E and an electric SUV based on the Cross Turismo, The Verge Both vehicles are scheduled to be on the market in 2020.
  • Volkswagen is so committed to electrics that it will change its logo to reflect a commitment to electrics, Bloomberg reported.
  • Volkswagen will need up to 40 factories producing enough batteries to hold a gigawatt (one billion watts) of electricity by 2030, CNN reported. Each would be the equivalent of one of Tesla’s gigafactories. VW will need 150 gigawatts of electricity to power all the cars it wants to electrify, CNN claimed.
  • Volkswagen’s Scania division has invested 10€ ($12.5 billion) in They plan to build a gigafactory battery-production facility and lab at Västerås, Sweden, Electrek reported.
  • Volkswagen’s MAN subsidiary is testing an electric semi-tractor, Clean Technica reported.
  • Volkswagen might have plans to electrify all 300 of its models by 2030, Electrek claimed.

Volkswagen Has The Money To Electrify

Volkswagen has the money to electrify as the automaker had $45.18 billion in cash and short-term investments on December 31, 2017, YCharts reported. That number was up from $43.3 billion in December 2016.

This fact means Volkswagen can pay for much, or perhaps all of its electric ambitions with the money it has in the bank. There will be no need to borrow or issue additional stock.

Volkswagen also reported a net income of $12.75 billion and earning $19.96 billion in cash from financing on December 31, 2017. Those funds came from annual revenues of $260.62 billion at the end of 2017. That number was up from $240.48 billion in December 2016, and $236.67 billion in December 2015.

Revenue figures indicate that VW has recovered quickly from the “dieselgate” scandal. The December 2017 annual revenue of $260.62 billion almost matches the December 2014 revenue number of $268.63 billion. If this continues, Volkswagen’s revenues will exceed the September 2014 high of $270.15 billion sometime next year.

To add icing to the electric cake, Volkswagen reported $506.508 billion in assets on December 31, 2017. That means it should have no trouble borrowing money if it needs to finance new plants or equipment to electrify.

Volkswagen not only has the money to electrify, but it also has the resources to borrow the money and develop the technology needed to make EVs a reality. That gives it an advantage Tesla will never be able to match: money.

Tesla Has No Money

Tesla Motors reported an “annual net income” of -$1.961 billion on December 31, 2017. That means it lost nearly two billion dollars during the year instead of making money.

Elon Musk’s company reported an “annual operating income” of -$1.632 billion on December 31, 2017. That means Tesla lost $1.632 billion from its operations.

Disturbingly, Tesla’s actual losses might be far more substantial, as the company reported an annual “free cash flow” of -$4.142 billion on December 31, 2017. That means Tesla may have lost more than $4 billion from its operations in 2017.

Tesla Is Not Making Any Money From Its Operations

Tesla Motors also reported an “investing cash flow” of around -$4.19 billion and an operating cash flow of -$60.65 million, which sounds incredibly low on the same day. There was one positive cash flow number at Tesla: it had a financing cash flow of $4.415 billion. This amount comes from the borrowing and financing of cars the company sells.

The bottom line is that Tesla is not making any money from its operations. Despite the losses, it had some money in the bank in the form of $3.523 billion in cash and short-term investments on December 31, 2017. This figure is low for the auto industry; the Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) reported cash and short-term investments of $38.927 billion on the same day.

A disturbing conclusion that one can make here is that the money Tesla has in the bank came from the financing cash flow. That is, it might be money that Elon Musk borrowed. It might explain why Tesla has so little money in the bank, when the ailing Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (NYSE: FCAU) reported having $15.756 billion cash and short-term investments on New Year’s Eve in 2017.

Tesla Cannot Compete With Volkswagen

Here are a few nonfinancial numbers that prove Tesla clearly cannot compete with Volkswagen:

  • Volkswagen operates 120 production plants in Europe alone. This statistic is an undercount because the figure does not include the VW factories in North and South America, Asia, and elsewhere.
  • Tesla has two automobile production facilities: a large plant in Freemont, California, and a small facility in the Netherlands. A third factory in China is still on the drawing board.
  • Volkswagen currently manufactures around 44,170 vehicles every week worldwide.
  • News stories indicate that Musk will be struggling to manufacture 6,000 cars a week by June 2018. Elon himself admitted that the company is stuck in “production hell,” Wired reported.
  • Volkswagen plans to increase production at its factory in Zwickau, Saxony, to 1,500 cars a day in the near future, Electrek reported. That means one VW factory can produce more than twice as many cars a week as Tesla’s maximum production.

A glance at the Volkswagen Group reveals that the $294.57 Tesla share price from April 19, 2018 was pure fantasy. The company lacks the resources to justify that price. The same data shows that Volkswagen AG (ETR: VOW3) was undervalued at $212.

Skeptics will wonder what the future of Tesla is. The simple answer is that Tesla will collapse and its remains will be gobbled up by another automaker. There are too many customers and too much high-quality technology at Tesla for a competitor like Tata Motors (NYSE: TTM) or Volkswagen to pass up. The Tesla brand will survive, but Elon Musk’s company will disappear.

I would not be surprised to see Tesla join the Volkswagen Group at some point in the future. Smart investors will ignore Tesla and buy through traditional automakers like VW.

Could Former FBI Director James Comey Make It As A Rodeo Clown?

Click here to view the original post.

With a flair for self-promotion, former FBI Director Comey may land himself a paying job on the rodeo circuit

Fired FBI Director James B. Comey has now admitted that some of the allegations against President Trump could be false.

Comey told Trump that stories about a tape of Trump and prostitutes “could have been made up,” The New York Times reported. That revelation comes from a group of memos made concerning his discussions with the President that were released to the public on April 19.

Trump was willing to meet with Comey to discuss allegations that the Russians had made a blackmail tape of the future president, before the inauguration in 2017. The two discussed the so-called “dossier;” in which British spy turned private investigator, Christopher Steele, made allegations against Trump.

Less than a month later, Comey seems to have changed his mind. A February 2017 memo stated that Comey thought other intelligence agencies had corroborated portions of the dossier. Comey did not say what agencies had confirmed the allegations, or how they had been substantiated.

The Democrats agree that the Dossier is Fake

Strangely enough, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) also thinks the Steele Dossier might be fake or unreliable.

The DNC lawsuit alleging Russian interference in the election does not mention the Steele dossier at all, The Washington Times pointed out. No reference is made to the file in the entire 66-page lawsuit.

Most likely this is because the DNC’s lawyers know it wouldn’t hold up in court.

Leaked Memos Designed To Promote Comey Book?

The leaked memos corroborate and support many of the points Comey made in his recently released book; A Higher Loyalty, the Atlantic magazine pointed out.

Comey’s “leaking” just happened to appear while he was on his new book tour.

The memos conveniently first went public when Comey appeared on The Rachel Maddow Show.

Disturbingly, Maddow herself already had handwritten notes from FBI General Counsel and former Acting Deputy Attorney General, Dana Boente before she interviewed Comey on April 20. Boente’s notes seem to be about some of the meetings between the president and then FBI Director Comey.

Come Made No Effort To Write Memos when Talking To Obama

Comey seemed to have made no effort to create any memos about President Obama public at that time. The memos also indicate that Comey wrote no memos about his conversations and meetings with former President Barrack Obama (D-Illinois) who appointed him FBI Director, ZeroHedge’s Tyler Durden pointed out.

Additionally, Comey made no memos about Obama administration members, such as former Attorney General Loretta Lynch, even though he said that he had serious concerns about her policies, Darden charged. The memos also fail to support a case of obstruction of justice against President Trump or anybody else, Darden claimed. That raises the possibility that the memos were merely a publicity stunt designed to pump up Comey’s book sales.

As good a marketer as Comey has been thus far; my advice would be to abandon any plans to enter the upcoming Rodeo Clown School in Tin Cup, Colorado.

Instead, consider the position of full-time clown on The View.

Bitcoins, Beer and the Student Loan Disaster

Click here to view the original post.

How much of this should the American taxpayer subsidize?

A large percentage of the $1.48 trillion student loan debt accumulated by Americans was never spent on tuition at all. Instead, much of that money went towards everything from beer, Bitcoin, spring break shenanigans and exotic reptiles.

More than one in five; or 21.2% of college students, surveyed by The Student Loan Report admitted to spending student loan money on cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC). That speculation is risky because Bitcoins lost almost 65% of their value between December 2017 and April 2018. A Bitcoin was trading at $19,205.11 on December 17, 2017, and $6,701.40 on April 5, 2018, data from Coinbase indicates.

Disturbingly, buying cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH) might be the most responsible thing college students are actually doing with their money. If they hold onto these digital coins, they stand to make money if prices recover.

How Colleges are Bribing Students with Student Loan Debt

Many more students are spending student loan funds on stuff like beer, Spring Break trips, video games, cable TV, big-screen TV sets, Uber rides, pets, bar tabs, pizza, fast food, new smartphones, or payments on new cars.

Such spending is possible because of the way student-loan money is paid to colleges. Under the current system, colleges do not send the lenders a bill for tuition. Instead, the lender sends the college a lump-sum payment to cover the tuition and living expenses.

The college takes the tuition out of the loan money and sends the rest to the student in the form of a check or electronic payment. The student is free to spend the money on whatever he or she wants. Anybody who has ever seen Animal House will know why handing cash to a 20-year old college student is always a bad idea.

Another abuse of the current system is that it appears to give colleges the ability to bribe students with cash. The somewhat shocking aspect is that the “bribes” are being financed with the students’ future earnings.

The Student Loan Disaster is Much Worse Than You Think

The average member of the Class of 2016 owed $37,172 in student loans about graduation, StudentLoanHero.com estimated. That amount was a 6% increase over 2015.
Around 44 million Americans owed $1.48 trillion in student loan debt in January 2018. That figure was more than double the federal deficit which was $640 billion in 2017 and the amount of credit card debt owed by Americans which is estimated to be close to $620 billion.

Student loans are problematic and potentially catastrophic because they cannot be written off through bankruptcy. That means a person has to pay it off, no matter how broke they are or how old the debt is.
Some people have even had their Social Security benefits garnished because of unpaid student loans. Social Security retirement benefits can be garnished for delinquent student loans as well.

Unfortunately, the number of people defaulting on student loans is increasing rapidly. Around 11.5% of people who began repayment on student loans on October 1, 2013, were in default by September 30, 2016, The Chicago Tribune estimated. No estimate on how much of that debt was used to finance beer, spring break parties or cryptocurrency investments was available.

Could a congressman run for office by promising to eliminate the “college loans gone wild” program?

6 Amazing Home Security Plants

Click here to view the original post.

If you’ve ever tangled with a berry patch or accidentally backed into a Spanish Dagger, then you know how painful they can be. When strategically placed, plants can act as an efficientform of home security defense without having to invest a lot of money.

When creating a fortress of solitude, most people think about building a fence to keep unwanted visitors out. However, plants make a much better defense for home security. Fences tend to draw curiosity, while plants seem to go unnoticed. That is until someone tries to walk through them! Here are six plants you need to plant for a natural home security system.

#1- Century Plants (Agave Americana

Some plants can provide an extra “layer” for extreme home security.

Commonly called a Century Plant or Sentry Plant, unlike its name suggest, it typically only lives 10-30 years. This home security plant has firm green leaves that grow 3-5 ft long with massivespikes and a tip that can easily pierce the skin.

The Century Plant thrives in drought conditions and spreads freely. The leaves are pale green and look beautiful in landscaping. Virtually disease free, this plant is easy to grow and maintain.

#2- Spanish Dagger (Yucca Gloriosa)

The Spanish Dagger is another evergreen that is easy to grow in warm climates. The long, stiff pointy leaves make this the perfect plant for home security.

When we were planning our home security garden, a friend recommended the Spanish Dagger. All we did was took a machete to the stalk of the plant, pulled back a couple of the leaves and we stuck it in the ground. Within no time, wehad a realhome security defense garden. As they grow tall, their weight will make them fall over, andthen they will root and spread.

Often a focal point in tropical gardens, the Spanish Dagger is visually pleasing and a deterrent to trespassers.

#3- Osage Orange Tree (Maclura Pomifera)

When I asked my fellow homesteading friends about plant security, many of them recommended the Osage Orange Tree. Osage Orange is a fast-growing tree that was used in place of barbed wire during the early 19th century.

The Osage Orange Tree produces a strong timber that resists rot and outlasts most lumber. Outside of its ability to grow fast, this unique tree produces many sharp, steel strong thorns that make it the perfect tree for home security.

#4- Rose Bushes

“A rose is a rose” indeed, but every rose has a thorn, anda rose bush is an excellent plant for home security when placed in the right location. The woody, thorny branches offer a painful sting which can spread disease and infection.

From miniature to climbing, roses grow in almost any climate which makesthem the ideal plant for home security.

#5- Berry Bushes

How about a home security system that feeds you? Now you won’t see ADT making that claim! Many berry plants like gooseberries, blackberries, and raspberries all produce delicious fruit that are high in antioxidants, but more importantly– thorns. Berries are fast growing and hardy to zone 3. From trellising to hedgerow, berries can be incorporated into any landscape and may be used for both home security and food.

#6- Citrus Trees

Another home security tree that has the added benefit of food are citrus trees. Several lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit trees produce thorns along their trunks, branches, and twigs.

We have several citrus trees on our property, andthe thorns are like no other. We have them planted below our bedroom windows with plenty of room to grow. We chose this placefor two reasons. One, for security. Anyone not knowing about the 3″ long, piercing thorns are in for a treat if they try to enter through our windows. Two, our house provides our citrus trees with radiant heat which helps them thrive.

Where To Plant Your Home Security Plants

As I mentioned above, placement is imperative when planting for home security.

The Osage Orange Tree makes an excellent perimeter tree. Creating a fast-growing hedgerow, the Osage Orange will be your first line of defense.

Plant your home security plants below every window (making sure the residents still have a safe escape in case of emergency) and byevery point of entry.

The climbing roses and berry bushes will do an excellent job of protecting you when planted below upper-levelwindows.

And finally, Spanish Daggers mixed with Century Plants make the perfect home security hedge closer to the home.

Add aesthetics and security to your home with the protection that only nature can provide. No one will ever know you have a secret fortress.

Could The U.S. Rebuild After Major EMP Event?

Click here to view the original post.

Surviving an EMP event will present incredible challenges

Of all the potential nightmare scenarios for disaster, an attack by high-altitude EMP (electromagnetic pulse) seems to be the worst in many people’s minds. The potential for destructionof our electric grid is said to have the potential for setting us back, technologically speaking, by over a century; landing us right in the midst of the 1800s. Since we don’t have the knowledge and tools to survive in the 1800s, many of us would die of starvation, if diseasedidn’t get us first.

I won’t argue this position since it originated with the EMP Commission’s report. A report, I might add, which was generated by the country’s top experts in EMP and its effects. These aren’t conspiracy theorists or fear mongers. They are scientists who believe that such an attack could cause the death of between 60 and 90 percent of our population.

The loss of all of our electronics would be a significantloss to society. But that’s nothing compared to the loss of the electric grid that powers all those devices. Electronic devices can be replaced, but losing the electrical generating capability of our nation, as well as the ability to transmit that power to the millions of homes, businesses and other end-use pointsis a much greaterproblem. Even if the power generating stations themselves canbe salvaged, it willtake decades to restore the entire grid.

Of course, this would be a race against time, as the massive numbers of deaths projected by the EMP commission arefor the first year after the EMP. Considering that the lead time to have a substation transformer built is one year, and there are over 55,000 substations in the country, chances are that death would win the race over the restorationof our power.

But I have faith in our country and even more in our countrymen. The people of the United States are known for their innovation, tenacity, “can do” attitude and pioneering spirit. I believe that these are still there, just waiting for the right circumstances to bring them out.

But What About the Grid?

In reality, I don’t believe that the electric grid would be able to be restored in the aftermath of an EMP. Oh, it might be restored 20 or 30 years down the road, but there just isn’t the manufacturing capability available to build all those transformers and everything else that is necessary. At least, not for the whole grid.

On the other hand, I think we’ll see a lot of activity going into restoring electrical service on a local level, for those who are close to power plants that survive. Unsurprisingly, those will be the older plants, which probablyhave control systems that can survive the EMP. There’s also a chance that nuclear power plants will escapemostlyunscathed, as they are built to withstand the effects of an EMP.

The big problem probably won’t be so much producing the power, as it will be delivering it to where it is needed. That’s why I say that restoration of the grid will start out only on a local basis; local power companies areproducing electrical power and providing it to those who are close enough to their operations, that they can use surviving technology to deliver it.

Even this will require some heroic engineering, bypassing existing controls and modifying equipment. But I believe it will be possible. The big question will then be how much fuel those power plants have available to them. Gas-fired plants won’t be able to run, because they won’t have any natural gas. The ones that will be most likely to be made functional will be hydroelectric and coal-fired plants.

So What?

Will that electrical power do any good? That depends once again on the ingenuity of the American people. The consensusis that an EMP will take out all of our electronics, exceptwhat is in Faraday Cages. But what most people forget, is that there are massive Faraday Cages all across the country, filled with electronic equipment.

The Faraday Cages I’m referring to arewarehouses. Most warehouses, except for the really oldones, are metal buildings with metal roofs. As long as the electronics inside them are not in contact with the building itself, which the packaging does an excellentjob of ensuring, they will be protected from the EMP by the building itself.

What won’t be protectedis the inventory control systems, which are all computerized. Since one of the ways that EMP attacks electronics is by passing through electrical wires, we can count on the inventory control computers being fried, along with their electronic records. So people who know what is in those warehouses will have to physically inventory it, and then probably bring the critical equipment down off of warehouse shelving with block and tackle. But it can be done.

With those resources available, engineers and technicians will be able to start restoring technology, opening factories and hospitals and putting people back to work. Again, this won’t be on a nationwide level, but rather on a local level. How much will be able to be restored in any particular area will depend a lot on the resources that are in that area.

From there, the next step will be tobegin trading between neighboring cities. People will have goods to barter and will have things they will need. If the nearbytownshave those things, business will happen.

Of course, the most significantneed will be food. Rural farming communities will be at an advantage, sitting on the most criticalcommodities in the country. The big problem will be in distribution, which will be extremely difficult, without gasoline and diesel to run vehicles.

In Conclusion

While the things I’m saying here don’t diminish the danger of an EMP attack, they do show that there is a possibility of surviving it. Many people will probably still die, especially in the larger cities. Those cities will run out of resources first, causing people to die of dehydration, starvation, anddisease. But smaller communities will have a chance; how much of an opportunitywill depend on the resources they have available to them, and thetechnical knowledge to make use of those resources.

Ultimately, the United States will survive an attack by EMP. Sadly, many of our citizens will die, andthe country that emerges will probably look much different than it does today. If I were to guess, I would say that it would more closely resemble the nationwe were during the westward expansion, with some variation of modern-day technology thrown in. But chaos would become normal, at least for a decade.

In the end, it will be up to those left torebuild this country. You and I, as preppers, are prayerfully planning on being some of those survivors. That said, it might be a good idea for us to plan on being ready to rebuild the country we inherit, when and if that time comes.

Bring your Bible though… we’re going need some rules. A biblical worldview built this country in the Colonial period and gave guidance during the movement West in the 1800s. It will work again. It’s that kind of book.

Five “Life Extension” Garden Vegetables To Plant In 2018

There’s no doubt about it: the health benefits of nutrient-dense, fresh, organic produce is a keyreason to break out the gardening tools each season.

Purchased produce simply doesn’t have as many nutrients as the veggies that come from our gardens. Commercial growers typically choose varieties that mature quickly, produce heavily, and give a uniform, visually-appealing fruit–all factors that come at the cost of nutrient density. As well, commercial growers often engage in practices that strip nutrients from the soil, which means the vegetables they grow have nowhere to absorb nutrients from. Finally, harvested vegetables

lose moisture and nutrients over time, as part of a process called respiration. The longer veggies sit between harvest and table, the more nutrients they lose.

For these reasons, freshly-picked home-grown vegetables are inherently healthier than purchased vegetables. That said, you can maximize the health benefits of your garden by planting those veggies that are chock full of nutrients. There are five vegetables, in particular, that pack a powerful nutrient punch: sweet potatoes, broccoli, brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens, and garlic.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are the most nutritious root veggies out there. They’re terrific for our digestive system since they’re high in fiber and they have a high phytosterol content, which may help prevent duodenal and gastric ulcers. These root veggies are also high in beta-carotene (Vitamin A), which helps maintain the health of our skin, mucous membranes, immune system, and eyes. High amounts of antioxidants prevent cell damage by free radicals, which in turn protects the body against cancer. Sweet potatoes also contain Vitamin B, Vitamin C, and several minerals, including iron, calcium, and selenium.

Sweet potatoes are tropical plants that love sun, heat, and humidity. Best in zones 8 and above, but you can successfully grow sweet potatoes as far north as Zone 3 if you keep the soil toasty under plastic sheetingduring early summer. As long as they stay warm, and have plenty of room to run their vines, sweet potatoes are easy to grow.

Broccoli

Broccoli is a powerhouse, providing us with protein and fiber as well as an array of vitamins (A, C, E, K, and some B vitamins including folate) and minerals (iron, potassium, calcium, selenium, and magnesium). The nutrients in broccoli contribute to:

  • Heart health, reducing cholesterol and heart disease.
  • Healthy, dense bones.
  • A healthy immune system.
  • Healthy eyes and the prevention of age-related macular degeneration.
  • The reduction of free radicals, which can assist in keeping our bodies cancer-free.

Broccoli also contains non-nutritive antioxidants and phytochemicals that have been shown to block cancer in its early stages.

Broccoli isn’t difficult to grow, but it does require a little bit of planning and care. It’s a cool weather crop that will bolt in the summer heat. For that reason, startbroccoliearly: seeded or even transplanted out about two weeks before the last frost date. During the summer months, keep broccoli shaded and mulched so that it stays as cool as possible. Water regularly and keep an eye on any potential pests.

Brussels Sprouts

Brussels sprouts (like broccoli, kale, mustard and collard greens, also discussed here) are members of the brassica family of vegetables. Brassicas contain phytochemicals (specificallyglucosinolates) and carotenoids-antioxidants, both of which have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer. Additionally, Brussels sprouts are rich in Vitamin K, which helps our blood clot and our bodies maintain healthy bones. These veggies are also high in Vitamin C and fiber and have a host of other vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin B6, thiamine, potassium, folate, iron, and manganese.

Like other brassicas, Brussels sprouts are a cool weather crop that doesn’t perform well in hot, dry weather. In fact, sprouts that mature when it’s hot outside may be flimsy and bitter. It’s best to start Brussels sprout seeds indoors in May or early June. Care for the seedlings indoors until August, or roughly 45-60 days beforethe first frost date. Once planted out, use mulch to protect the plants during summer’s last hot days. Brussels sprouts are slow to grow but well worth it.

Dark Leafy Greens (Kale, Mustard and Collard Greens, Spinach, Chard)

Kale, mustard greens, and collard greens are all members of the brassica family, and as such, have the same cancer-fighting phytochemicals and carotenoids-antioxidants as Brussels sprouts and broccoli. Further, dark leafy greens of all types are rich in calcium and iron, and also contain Vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as fiber, folate, and magnesium.

Most dark, leafy greens are fast-growing cool weather crops. If planted in early spring, before the risk of frost has passed, they’ll be ready to harvest before the heat of summer causes them to bolt. The exception is Swiss chard, which–although also quick and easy to grow–tolerates heat well enough to last into the fall.

Garlic

The health benefits of garlic are well known. It can boost the immune system, reduce blood pressure, lower cholesterol levels, and detoxify heavy metals in our bodies. As well, garlic contains antioxidants that may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Garlic is relatively easy to grow as long as you plant itat the right time. Garlic cloves are best overwintered in the ground, to sprout in the spring or you may try planting as soon as the ground is workable in late winter. Other than standard watering and weeding, keep an eye on your garlic plants for flowers. Should blossoms start to form, cut them off so that the plant directs its energy to its bulb.
