Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Survival Communication w/ Jim CobbThis week we will have Jim Cobb from Survival Weekly on the show to talk about his new book “Prepper’s CommunicationHandbook: Lifesaving Strategies For Staying In Contact During And After A Disaster.” We talk about communication with ham radios, walkies-talkies, shortwave radios, scanners, internet based communication, codes/ciphers, covert communication and much more. Jim is the owner and lead trainer for DisasterPrepConsultants.com. His articles on preparedness have been published in national magazines and you can find him online at survivalweekly.com.

 Jim CobbCommunications with loved ones is one of the most essential skills and plans you can have in place for a post disaster scenario. After 9/11, Katrina, Sandy and even during some major gatherings cell phone towers and other forms of communication are destroyed or incapable servicing your communication needs. Information is a critical resource regardless of disaster type. You need it in order to make effective decisions. Information will, or at least should, guide your actions and your planning. While food, water, shelter and security should be your first priorities as those are essential to your life moving forward. Once those needs are realized you will need to plan your next course of action (assuming you don’t have pre-plans for the scenario in place). To plan those next actions you will need to have up-to date and accurate information.

Exploring the best options for every scenario, this hands on guide features detailed information on multiple emergency communication systems, including satellite radio, shortwave, NOAA receivers, GMRS/FRS radios, citizen band, ham radio, radio scanners and MURS radio.

Self-defense and staying fed!
Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Self-defense and staying fedOver the last two weeks we have talked about firearms and alternatives to fire arms, this week we will talk about my personal selections when it comes to a long term self reliance kit. There will be firearms, traps and all kinds of goodies in the kit to keep you fed. I touched on this topic a few months ago when I talked about building a long-term self-reliance pack but this week I wanted to focus on the items that are specifically for self-defense or getting food.

3-22-16 h_beaverThese are my food getting preferred kit items for a multi-week trip into the back woods:
1) Single shot 12 gauge shotgun with chamber adapters (18- 12 ga rounds on the gun, 50- 22 lr rounds on the gun, bottle of primers, powder horn,
2) Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum five shot or a Semi-Auto revolver if dealing with a human threat and not animal predators
3) ~4” Fixed blade knife
4) Spear Point
5) Snare Wire
6) #12 and #36 Bank Line
7) Trapping Card
8) Two Yo Yo Spring Snare
9) Two foot traps
10) Three Body Traps
11) Gill Net
12) Small fishing kit

These are my preferred defensive weapons in the event of a civil breakdown or TEOTWAWKI:
1) AR platform Pistol (AK or SBAR OR Carbine if you prefer) with haversack full of magazines with varying ammunition (sling carry)
2) Long Range Rifle AR-10 is my personal choice (pack carry)
3) Defensive pistol I prefer 45ACP (belt holster or drop leg with knife)
4) Fixed blade knife
5) Baton

3-22-16 FB_IMG_1457483848003As you can see there are a major differences between being self-reliant in a deep wilderness environment and dealing with hostile human threats. There are all kinds of choices out there and I have detailed them over the last two weeks to the best of my ability but these are the two “kits” I would settle on given the particular situation. I look forward to your feedback and what your various kits would be made up from.

Alternatives to Firearms the Other Weapons!
Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Firearms The AlternativesLast week we had an in depth discussion of firearms selection and this week we talk about some alternatives for our friends in countries not as firearm friendly, those in the dreaded CA or NY or those who simply are not able to get access to a firearm or chose to go another way.

We start the night talking about projectile weapons and end with more of a hand-to-hand style of combat weapon. Within each category of weapons I have researched several products which I have either used or believe to be an effective means of self-defense or means of securing game. We talk about air guns, blow guns, sling shots, spears, staff, nun-chucks, atlatl, bola, baton, explosives, percussion devices, sling, cross bows , sai, swords, nun chaku, trident, club, knife, machete, potato gun, throwing stick, boomerang, spear, tomahawk, axe, caltrop, throwing star, throwing knives, hammer, and maybe a few more varieties.

Also discussed, passive defensive systems (A.K.A. traps) with the understanding that many of these are illegal to put into practice unless there is a total breakdown of society. Many of these defensive implements were perfected by the North Koreans and Vietnamese and can be crafted with little more than a knife, cordage and a little common sense.

Firearm selection!
Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Firearm 79x100It’s time to explore a topic I have only touched on a few times on the show, firearm selection. I know everyone has a passionate opinion on this topic with what they believe is the right weapon to have in ant given circumstance! We will explore selecting a firearm for concealed carry, home defense, hunting/predator protection, and even for a bug out bag or whatever you may call that type of kit.

Granted there will be overlap in categories but I will try to limit my discussion of each particular firearm to a single section. At the onset of the show I will talk about starter weapons which can function across many categories and are generally good weapons to begin your firearm journey with.

2-11 woman-gun1I will try not to show favoritism for any particular brands or models (gun selection is intensity personal), but when I’ve had a good or bad experience I may convey those stories (I have a few great warranty stories). Depending on time available we will talk a little about training, accessories, ammo selection and whatever other questions which may arise along the way.

So what are a few of the firearms we will be discussing? 44 magnum revolver, single shot 12 guage, air rifles, 22 lr, AR platform, AK platform and much more!

The belt knife!

The belt knife!
Josh “7P’s of Survival

belt knifeI have talked about knives on this show probably more than any other subject and yet it is almost always about a specific brand of knives. On this episode I decided to go in a different direction with a familiar topic and talk about how to go about selecting your belt knife. I have written several articles on this topic and one in particular I talk about the ten elements that I ensure a belt knife will have if it is going to be a one tool option.

For a long-term Survival/Self-Reliance Knife I look for the following options:

1) Fits your hand comfortably in all positions;
2) Manageable and effective blade length;
3) Solid/Flat Pommel;
4) One Cutting Edge with no serrations;
5) 90 degree edge on spine;
6) High Carbon Steel;
7) Sharp/Spear Point;
8) Heavy duty sheath with ferro rod loop;
9) Thick enough to withstand prolonged abuse;
10) Fixed blade with full or nearly full tang blade.

belt knifeNow let’s take a step back from that…. The first step in selecting a knife is making the determination of #1 how much you’re willing to spend and #2 what functions you plan to use the knife. So you only want to spend a small amount but want an all-around utility knife? Well, there are many options out there and we will talk about some of those. So what if you want a do it all knife but could care less about batoning you can always go for a leatherman, if you want a fighting knife they make a knife for that… So knowing exactly what your tool to do and do well is essential to getting the most out of your purchase regardless of how much you want to spend.

Throughout this show I walk through a potential knife purchases for various tasks and at different price points and what I would most likely purchase in that scenario. As always I welcome your questions and comments and would be glad to provide a little advice if you’re in the middle of a knife selection.

First Aid and Self Aid!
Josh “7P’s of Survival

First AidLast week we talked about building a kit for wilderness first aid or self aid and also what is needed for treatment of a gun shot wound or massive trauma. We then talked a good bit about medicinal herbs and plants for that first aid kit and I detailed those items I now carry. This week we are moving on to how the first aid kit we built, in addition to your 10 C’s Kit, can be utilized to effect first aid and self aid.

What Will We Cover This Week:

  • Bleeding– We will start the night talking about trauma, focusing on bleeding control initially. We will explore the basics for bleeding control and move into which plants can also help stop bleeding.
  • Mechanical Injury– Next we will move to mechanical injuries and how you can stablixe those injuries with the kit you carry. We will explore cutting tools, sheaths, cordage, cotton, sticks, air matresses, sleeping pads, clothing and much more.
  • Bites/Stings/Skin Ailments– We will then shift to the treatment of bites and stings off all the creapy crawlies and also those ailmnets that attack your skin such as poison ivy.
  • Blisters– Next we turn to the prevention and treatment of the most common ailment in the woods and how your existing kit can help make you more comfortable.
  • Hypothermia/Shock/Dehydration– The three killers will bring us near the end of the show as we talk about how to recognize these issues and what you can do to treat these critical issues.

Self Aid

Click here to view the original post.

A Basic Self-Reliance Approach To Self Aid: Part 1
Josh “7P’s of Survival

Self AidThis week we will be talking about all things first aid or self aid; whichever, you prefer in a woodland environment. I have been a first responder since I was sixteen and have served in a variety of capacities including wilderness First Responder and EMT along with a few levels of Ambulance based certifications. Over the last, well almost 20 years now, I have been presented with a wide variety of challenges, situations, training scenarios and just plain weird situations that have helped me deal with most injuries using a very simple kit which will all easily fit in a haversack with room to spare for your 10 Piece kit.

During the show we will:

2-9-16 thCA7XBOBI1) discuss what I prefer to carry when going into the woods alone (which is 99% of the time for me);

2) Discuss what I would take into the woods if I’m planning on acting as a first responder or primary care giver; and

3) Common Medicinal Plants/Trees that I like to use and generally keep in my kit (there are 10 right now I believe) and how to use them generally.

I believe this will take up the bulk of the hour, but if for some strange reason I have extra time I will start work next weeks show which will be a very compact wilderness first aid class.

It is my hope to speak with many of you during the show about what you carry in you IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit) and why you chose those items. I will then show how you can potentially lighten your load utilizing the technology in your kit, nature and a few tips/tricks for increased success!

January 19nth 2016 7P’s of Survival with guest Karen Lynn

7P's of SurvivalTonight we will have Karen from Little Suburban Homestead on the show completing the cycle of our friend ship. For those of you who don’t know she had me on her show as a guest before I started my own show here, I then took over her Tuesday time slot as she moved to Thursday and now as she has moved on from the Prepper Broadcasting network she has come back almost a year since I was on her show to be on mine.

Tonight Karen and I will be talking about several issues related to the beginning homesteader. We will stare out the night talking all things chickens. My father recently became a backyard chicken farmer so I thought it would be good to talk with Karen and give everyone a few tips and tricks for keeping chickens for both fresh eggs and also meat. We will discuss what you need to start, how many chickens you would need depending on your goals, what to build (coop) and how to design it, free range vs. feed , roster or no rooster, what type of chickens are best, how to deal with neighbors, best practices for eggs collection, how to care for chicks, determining when its time to eat a laying hen and much more!

We will then turn to some simple tricks for backyard gardening/farming with minimal land discussing several tips and tricks at increasing your overall output. We will discuss multi-season gardening, indoor herb gardening and winter gardening. We will then turn to preserving your harvest via root cellars and canning where Karen will give you several tips tricks and maybe a few recipes to help you on your journey to becoming your own grocery store.

Protecting your preps!
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival

So you have a BOB, does it help you become self reliant?

Protecting your preps!BOB, Inch Bags, 72 hour kits, EDC Bag, Survival Kit, TEOTWAWKI kit….. Whatever you call the selection of gear you carry as you embark on your adventure into the woods my question is do you think you could be self-reliant over the short and long term out of a backpack? Tonight I will explore something I ask myself a great deal when packing a kit for a longer trip and that is 1) do I really need this item and 2) how does it help me become more self reliant?

12-22-15 20140712_020809My kit evolves on what seems like a weekly basis as I trade and test new gear and as seasons change, but I can tell you one thing if you expect to live out of a backpack for the rest of your live you better have a skill level that is off the charts! In this show I will talk a good bit about items you can add to your kit that will help effect your long-term self reliance (this will be a tool heavy kit) and we will also talk about a few things that can help you reduce the suck factor along the way.

12-22-15 20151009_170958This show will take things from lessons from minimalist camping, woodcrafters, campers, hunter/trapper, and homesteading trying to mash all those styles into a self-reliant backpack of tools to effect long-term wilderness self-reliance.

I hope many of you will call in as this is something that is an ever evolving process that can only be perfected by field testing and lessons learned. Let my success and failures save you time and money if bugging out to the wilderness is in your plan.

Wilderness self-reliance skills!
Live from the woods/trap line
Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Wilderness This week I will be coming to you live from the woods/trap line (I hope technology doesn’t fail me) and we will be talking about outdoor skills training. There are hundreds of places across the country that teach in-person self reliance skills courses and without having been to a majority of then. I’m going to limit myself to a few free coorespondence type courses online that are great places to get your feet wet when learning wilderness self-reliance skills. I will devote the majority of my time talking about the Bushcraft USA Bush Class Beginner, intermediate and Advanced courses.

12-15-15 20150504_143809Over the last year or so I have utilized these courses to hone, develop and practice my wilderness self-reliance skills for free on my own time and at my own pace. While others may need to jump into the deep end and take a class to start (there are plenty of great courses and instructors out there) this method is not only much cheaper for many but also more practical as they can easily into developing skills. Granted spending countless nights in the woods is not for everyone so this course format also allows you to find out if this lifestyle is for you before investing hundreds of dollars in gear that you would need at the onset of a traditional course. To complete these courses you need little more than the materials you can find around your home with the lone exception being a good knife (an old hickory butcher knife will get you through the class).

12-15-15 20150712_220914_resized_1I will walk through the Basic Bush Class Requiements (See my article on the class here, Intermediate Bush Class Requiements  (See my article on the class here,  the advanced bush class and all of the electives you must complete for certification. I will then cover the positive and negative aspects of this type of course and answer any questions you might have concerning the courses.

Hammock camping!

Hammock camping
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival

12-4-15 hammockThis Week on the 7 P’s of Survival Live Show we will be talking all things hammock camping and winter hammock camping with the guys from Jacksrbetter.com! I have had the pleasure of using their Mt. Washington and Winter Nest Underquilts recently and these guys put out some of the most high quality gear available on the market today.  Just one look at their website and you will know that these guys have a ton of camping experience and I personally look forward to learning from their wealth of knowledge. In just a few short conversations that I have had with these gentlemen I have learned a great deal about how to make a hammock a more enjoyable place to sleep, especially in the winter.

In this 12-4-15 JMW1-300-px-300x300show I hope to discuss the following topics: hammock
selection, under and top quilt selection, alternative sleeping methods to under or top quilts, rigging methods, tarp/rain fly options, and best places to hang a hammock.  I myself just started trying to hammock camp this past summer as a way to stay cool/elevated and away from the mosquitoes and fell in love with how great of a night’s sleep you get in the hammock, if I could I would replace my bed with one. In that short time of camping I have learned a few lessons that I hope to convey tonight and among those are the following:

1) If you are always hot get a hammock and I guarantee you will be cold when you under estimate the power of heat loss by convection;

2) Under quilt substitutes will work, but they end up being much bulkier and weigh more while providing much less protection from convective heat loss;

3) Wool blankets are great when winter camping, but once again are much heavier and provide much less warmth for the weight;

4) All in one packages are great, but when it comes to winter camping the netting can be in the way;

5) While a small foot print tarp/rain fly are nice for easy packing and deployment a larger 10×10 fly can make all the difference when going on a long-term trip;

6) There are literally hundreds of ways to rig a hammock, but for the a figure 8 follow through on one side coupled with a truckers hitch on the other is hard to beat (I guess that is the old school in me);

7) The size and the type of the tree you hang from matters a great deal, remember soft woods such as pine will bend much easier creating sag in your hammock.

I have no doubt the guys from JacksRBetter.com will be insightful into all things hammocks and will make this a learning experience for campers at any experience level.

Penny Pinching Prepper Show
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival”

Penny Pinching PrepperThis Week on the 7 P’s of Survival Live Show we will have Bernie Carr from Appartmentprepper.com and the author of the new book “The Penny-Pinching Prepper!” We will discuss several preparedness related topics covered in her book including: water distillation and alternative water purification methods, stocking a prepper pantry on a budget, building a DIY rocket stove, Navigation tips and tricks, and diy soap making. Buy your copy of her book HERE! Be sure to come to chat and call in with your questions this week as we will be giving away a copy of Bernie’s book and also “Lights Out” by Ted Coppel!

Penny Pinching PrepperThis book offers dozens of affordable and easy-to-implement solutions, including how to stock a prepper pantry on $10 a week, build a stove from used tin cans, create a water filter with two free 5-gallon buckets, craft a lamp that burns inexpensive vegetable oil, devise a storm shelter using 10-cent trash bags and more. Packed with inexpensive DIY projects for keeping your family safe in any worst-case scenario, Carr’s smart and frugal approach shows how to stay on a stable financial footing while fully preparing for any life-threatening situation.

Bernie also highlights old-fashioned skills like cooking from scratch as a doubly beneficial way to save money and increase your self-reliance. No matter what your setting or your financial situation might be, you will find practical suggestions in this book. It neatly straddles the line between a frugality guide and a prepping book and would be a great gift to inspire someone who is new to the preparedness lifestyle.

About the author:
Penny Pinching PrepperBernie runs the popular website ApartmentPrepper.com, where she writes about family preparedness for the city dweller living in a home that is different from the usual prepper retreat. In her bio, she writes, “Many preparedness sites that I have read gave me good information but much of it is geared toward people who own their homes or have a retreat. While this is one of our goals towards which we are working, we are currently not there yet. So I needed to do something in order to feel more productive. There are some steps we can take now to become better prepared and self sufficient, while living in an apartment in a large city. I am writing this blog to help not only myself but others who are in the same situation and want to have more control.”

How to make a knife!
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival”

How to make a knife!Want To learn How to Make A Knife? Listen in as I speak with James Whales (Founder and proprietor of Indy Hammered Knives) about his upcoming knife making classes and what the process students will learn in the class. We will also talk about a few of his exciting new products (one of which is the perfect present for someone who is striving to become self reliant) and possibly a sneak peak at a Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Christmas Deal from IHK!

How to make a knife!We will start off the show talking about his brand new Complete Knife Kit- IHK Skinner (find out more information Here), which I believe is the perfect gift for anyone who wants to learn about knife making or is interested in becoming more self reliant. The kit comes with the following items: 1) 8” IHK Skinner blade (pre shaped, sharpened and ready to go)- the blade is 4” and 8” overall; 2) Book Matched scales (handle material) of your choice- I personally love the ironwood that came on my IHK Bush Clever; 3) Brass Mosaic Pin and Brass Lanyard Tube cut to length; 4) Two ton two part epoxy in corked glass tubes; 5) Custom skinner sheath by Samson Leather; 6) Step-By-Step Instructions- Illustrated; 7) Letter of Authenticity; 8) Care Card Instructions on maintaining your high carbon steel blade; and 9) Beautiful Wooden Gift Box with brass hardware and latch. James has taken care of all the tricky parts of the process and has essentially left you the ability to craft a the scales to your liking.

The TEK has two sheath options currently: 1) the coyote tactical sheath with front pouch large enough for an Altoids sized tin complete with ferro rod w/ bungee cordage, four waterproof fire starters and jute twine or 2) A leather hip sheath with IHK logo. This knife and kit look to be an excellent combination for self reliance and I look forward to testing it out in the very near future (be sure to keep an eye out for that review within a week or two.

11-24-15 received_1497217747246292After the break we will come back and talk about the brad new Indy Hammered Knives Knife Making Class. The class will be taught using the same materials and process James uses to produce his one of a kind hammer forged knives. We will walk our way through the entire knife making class process, talk about what you will need to bring and what you can expect to learn while you are there.

Before we close I will be giving James a chance to tell you about a few Black Friday/Cyber Monday/Christmas/Gift Ideas that are must haves for everyone’s Christmas shopping list! If you haven’t had a chance to check out the IHK Bush Clever (see my review here)or the 18th century blanket roll (see it here) I hope you will check them out as I’m sure they would be a great give for anyone that enjoys the outdoors on your Christmas list.

Fire Craft 101 Screenshot_2015-03-23-16-36-45_resized_1If you follow my blog you know I like to practice every possible means of fire making available. This week’s live show will feature a look into my fire kits, basic means of starting a fire, proper fire prep to get fire in any condition, primitive fire, sure fire, 18th fire starting and tips and tricks. If you have been having any issues with fire making please feel free to call into the show or join chat and I will gladly try to help you find a solution.

Fire Craft 101I will start the show out with a short section on the physics of fire as you have to understand fire to make it work for you. I will then transition into types of fire starting devices and follow that up with tinder materials. Once those bases are covered I will tell you what makes it into my pocket fire kit and what makes it into my large fire kit. We will then transition into a proper fire lay and how to make sure you are able to get a fire in any conditions. We will then cover fire lays and how to make them work for you. Finally as time allows we will touch on primitive fire making methods.

SERE or Micro Kits, Why Everyone Needs One!
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival

Micro Kits Full+Kit+Contents_small_resizedIt’s been awhile since I’ve had a show where I could sit down and just talk to you about things I personally do and things from my kit. Tonight we are going to change that as I will be the guest for the evening :). I plan to examine my Micro kits and what I have found works best in them after a few years of testing.

Micro Kits PhotoGrid_1431130630079_resizedOver the years my Micro 10 C’s kit (see it here) has changed dramatically as it was initially more gadgets and now it fulfills my survival needs to match my evolving skill set. I have tested each item in the kit countless times and in various manners and each item has multiple uses to effect survival anywhere I might be in the world. This kit goes with me wherever I go and I believe it could get me out of nearly any jam in the woods. We will go through what I started out with which was more of an E&E prepper kit to what I carry today in my kit. Along the way I will tell you why I got rid of many of the items and why others made the cut.

I will then turn to my pocket first aid kit and delve into its contents. While it is nothing off the charts it was enough to get my wife through a two week trip with some serious blisters on her feet.

If there is a surplus of time (something I never seem to have) I will then dig into my edc items and my IFAK/blowout kit of choice (if we run out of time you can find my EDC kit HERE).

Caving 101
Josh “7 P’s of Survival”

Caving IMG_8454This week on the 7 P’s Of Survival we will have Tyler Anderson back on the show and we will be talking all things Caving. Tyler will walk you through where to start on your caving journey as far as equipment, training, packing, guides, clubs, rescue and much more.

To start the night off we will talk about basic skills and equipment to practice and develop before you decide you want to take the plunge into caving (if you are into mountaineering then you will have most of the gear you will need) . Tyler and I both come from a technical rescue background and got stated into caving through high angle rescue with or respective fire and EMS agencies. We will give you a basic set of equipment that can serve you in your recreational climbing, caving, rope rescue, mountaineering, and even swift water adventures. We will then expand that equipment list onto things that you might want to consider as you dig deeper into exploring various climbing adventures. Be sure to check out the Mountaineering section of our store http://astore.amazon.com/th7pssubl-20?_encoding=UTF8&node=16 for all your adventure sport needs.

10-3-15 FB_IMG_1446173501102_resizedOnce you have the basic kit items in hand we will talk about what skills you are going to need to practice/develop/hone before you think about going into any cave. These skills involve everything from basic knots to working in a harness to climbing a rope, dealing with confined spaces, swimming underground and much more. We will talk about schools to attend to develop these skills and places you can go to practice that might be a little innovative. Additionally, we will talk about a few groups you need to join if you are going to start caving as their resources are beyond reproach and have more local knowledge that you simply can’t find on the internet.

10-3-15 FB_IMG_1446173584194_resizedWe will close out the evening talking about adventures to try (I really want to do a cave with an underground river), what to avoid and generally how to go down the rabbit’s hole (literally and figuratively) of getting deeper and deeper into mountaineering, caving, climbing, etc. Fair warning once these sports get their hooks into you it’s expensive and will be how you want to spend all of your free time! We will also talk about some cave rescues and just how dangerous this adventure sport is so that you have a clear picture what this adventure sport entails. We hope to see you in chat and hear from you on the air with all the questions you may have about recreational climbing and mountaineering!

Pathfinder School, Knife, & Self-Reliance!
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival

Pathfinder SchoolHold on to your hats Ladies and Gentlemen this show is a barn burner and race against the clock! Tonight we will have Jamie Burleigh (lead instructor at the Pathfinder School) on the show to talk about all things Pathfinder! This will be a Special episode of the 7 P’s of Survival and we had to secured an extra ½ hour of air time to allow for all the questions in the Chat Room.

10-27-15 Phantom_II_on_Tree__00931.1439822245.400.527A large part of the show was dedicated to the introduction of the Pathfinder Knife Shop (henceforth “PKS”) a subsidiary of the Self Reliance Outfitters (henceforth “SRO”). Currently PKS offers four knives: Phantom 2, Scorpion, Scorpion HD, Kephart, and maybe a special announcement about upcoming knives! See the knives and visit the website HERE!

While I haven’t got a chance to get one of these knives in my hands yet they look amazing and have the specifications and lifetime guarantee to back up their products just like the other major players in the custom self-reliance knife business. Also being that it is backed by the SRO, I’m positive that you will enjoy your blade just as much as their other products.

We then transition over to a few staple products at the pathfinder school that I love: Stainless Steel Bottle Kit, Stainless Steel Bushpot, and many more products just to name a few. There also may be a few new product revelations in this section of the show. I know many or you want to know about the decelerator that pairs with the stainless bottle kit mentioned above and I also ask and see if any information can be given at this time as it seems like the perfect pairing for that kit! We talk about upcoming events and upcoming specials and what we can expect from the pathfinder school going forward. We also talk about a couple of the products Jamie designed himself: 1) Burleigh Blam and 2) Bug Shot. I have personally used Burleigh Balm and it works amazingly.

Pathfinder SchoolOnce we got through that section of the conversation we talk a little bit about the Pathfinder School, its classes and survival philosophy. We talk about all of their course offerings at the Ohio School location, the 10 C’s of survivability and remote/correspondence courses. We talk what you would need to make it through a PF Class, what to do to prepare for a PF Class and the general order in which you should take your PF Classes. We also discuss Pathfinder TV (a YouTube subscription service) that has a ton of instructional videos as well as the Schools old YouTube channel that has some of the best self-reliance related material on the internet.

Goats, Axes & Fire!

Click here to view the original post.

Goats, Axes & Fire Ohhh My!

GoatsThis week on the 7 P’s Of Survival Show we will have Chris Gustafson on the show and will be talking all about the life of a Michigan Outdoorsman. We plan to talk about using goats for all things self reliance, collecting fire tinder material and what works best, his two businesses, some axe junkie recommendations for the everyday woodsman and we will talk a little bit about what in my opinion is the best barter/trading page on Social Media “Bushcraft Outdoors/BUY SELL TRADE!!!!!.” Chris runs the Gustafson Hobby Farm HERE, Michigan Wild Fire HERE and is one of the few remaining practicing packgoating in Michigan.

GoatsA lot of people look at goats as annoying animals that are not worth their trouble on the homestead. Chris turns that notion on its head and uses those same goats to clean several trails in Northern Michigan that so many couldn’t get out and enjoy without their help.

His goats are used for trail cleanup as pack goats that pack out all the garbage those who don’t know what leave no trace truly means. Aside from this great use goats can provide entertainment (they are quite funny to watch and listen to at times), milk, cheese, leather, soap, landscaping assistance, security, companionship and wool fiber. We will explore several of the benefits of having a goat on the homestead during the show and hopefully hear a few of your stories.

10-13-15 11745381_1Once we tackle the age old question of to add goats or not to add goat we will move on to fire craft and the Michigan Wildfire Kit. Chris puts out one of the most well rounded tinder kits with some beautifully hand crafted ferro rods. We will talk tinder, fire starting mediums and the best place to procure those items in the wild. We may even venture into the wild world of Chaga and a few other wild medicinal that can be easily procured and used while out in the woods. Speaking of procurement we will talk about axes in this segment and what we both recommend for taking into the woods for the beginner woodsman.
Rounding out the show we will talk buying/selling/trading and bartering for gear. Over the last two years or so I have been part of the Facebook group Bushcraft Outdoors/BUY SELL TRADE!!!!! HERE and have had countless great dealings and trades for excellent kit items. We will talk about safe trading practices, what is often available and how working on this trading skill now could be one of the best skills you could acquire for a society of olden days.
This should be a fun show and we hope to her from you during the show!
