Most people like to think that if society collapsed, the most common cause of death would be at the hands of other people. They like to imagine that the apocalypse will be filled with action packed shootouts and marauding gangs of looters. Obviously there would be a lot of violence if society collapsed, but the truth of the matter is that violence would be a secondary concern.

Mother Nature Has Plans of Her Own

This is evident if you only take a quick look throughout history. During the most tumultuous times in human history, it wasn’t violence that killed the most people, but disease and starvation. Even during war, when violence reached its apex, most of the soldiers didn’t die from violence, and that remained the case until the 20th century. During the American Civil War for instance, for every three soldiers who died on the battlefield, five died of disease.

It’s important to remember that if society were to collapse, it would be tantamount to traveling back in time to when modern amenities didn’t exist. And without those amenities, there are a ton of pathogens that can kill you. So before you blow your entire prepping budget on guns and body armor, consider some of the many unglorified ways that the collapse of society could cut you down.

These are the Seven Likely Causes of Death When the SHTF

1. Superbugs

The world was a hell of a scary place before the invention of antibiotic medications. Any nick or scratch could lead to an untreatable infection, and communicable diseases often ran rampant. Nowadays our antibiotics can treat these diseases, but just barely. As various strains of bacteria become immune to these treatments, we’re rapidly approaching a post-antibiotic world that looks an awful lot like the old world. If society collapses then these souped up diseases are going to be unleashed without any inhibitions. Tuberculosis, staph, typhoid, strep throat, MRSA, and E. Coli will become all too common.

2. Water-Related Illness

If society collapses, people are going to suddenly find themselves reliant on local water sources, and unfortunately those water sources are going to be contaminated. It’s often the case that natural ponds and stream are already unsafe to drink, but the same disaster that cuts off your tap is going to make that water even more dangerous.

Without running water, people will be forces to leave their waste in their immediate environment, where it will likely mingle with local water sources. This among other unsanitary conditions can cause a whole host of water-borne diseases including gastroenteritis, Hepatitis A, intestinal parasites, Diphtheria, cholera, typhoid, and even polio. Here are 9 common water-borne illnesses to prepare for in a disaster scenario.

3. Mosquitoes and Rats

It takes all the might of modern civilization just to keep certain pests in check. But when the garbage trucks stop showing up and the swimming pools turn green, you can bet that the rats and mosquitoes will proliferate like crazy. And they’ll be carrying diseases that are the stuff of nightmares. Rats will carry the hantavirus, leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and the plague; and in North America, mosquitoes will most likely be carrying dengue fever. Here are some tips to rat-proof your preparedness supply closet.

4. Cold Weather

A lot of people will be forced to go without adequate shelter after the collapse. So when winter arrives, you’re going to see a lot more weather related ailments. We’re all very familiar with flu season, but most people don’t realize that cold weather conditions can spawn numerous diseases, most of them respiratory related. Between the lack of sunlight, people crowding indoors, and the poor circulation caused by cold weather, there will be more cases of strep throat, pneumonia, croup, bronchiolitis, ear infections, and the stomach flu. To prepare for this, understand that hospitals and medical care may not be available (or too dangerous to get to). You may want to consider storing natural remedies, herbal poultices and tinctures to assist in these cold weather ailments.

5. Malnutrition

In a roundabout way, malnutrition would probably be the leading cause of disease after the SHTF. That’s because your diet is tightly linked to the quality of your immune system, so if you’re not getting enough calories, protein, vitamins or minerals, you’re more susceptible to every ailment under the sun. However, malnutrition is most associated with conditions like scurvy, rickets, pellagra, goiters, and beriberi.

6. Cadavers

The collapse of society would destroy every kind abundance that the modern world provides us, and in return, the only thing that would be in abundance are the dead. Dead bodies, especially the kind that were infected with disease to begin with, pose a serious health threat. Without a functioning society, and with bodies piling up faster than they can be buried or cremated, these cadavers would litter our towns and cities, and would most likely pose a serious threat to local water supplies.

7. Disease

Overshadowing many of these medical ailments will be disease. In fact, many believe that disease would be the real killer if the world fell apart and would dwarf the number of casualties caused by violence. Diseases are opportunists and tend to surface at a time the conditions are right for them to flourish. A long-term emergency would be just the right time, wouldn’t you say? These 10 diseases could become common medical emergencies. Make sure you have a well supplied medical closet and a sick room prepared for these issues.

There is a Silver Lining

As bleak as that sounds however, there is a silver lining. Prepping to prevent disease and infection is a lost less intimidating, and a lot more affordable than preparing to face-off against your fellow-man.

In fact, it’s as simple as stocking up on very general supplies that you should be accumulating anyway. Having plenty of food, toiletries, basic medical supplies, and water purification tools, will go a long way toward keeping you safe from the ravages of disease.

How long do you suppose they would last before they cried uncle? Would they even survive? The odds probably aren’t so good.

Of course, the reverse is probably also true. If you and your family were wrenched from the comforts of the present and hurled back into a previous era, you might not fare so well either. Your survival odds would probably be a little better since you have hindsight and an understanding of germ theory. However, it would still be a pretty alien world for you. It would be littered with pitfalls that most modern people can’t even imagine.

And that’s why it’s so important for everyone to prepare for the possibility that one day our grid could go down in a big way, whether it be from a terrorist attack, cyber attack, nuclear war, or solar flare. If our society suffered a widespread power failure that lasted for weeks or months, it would be no different for us than if we were suddenly sent back to the 1800’s. It would be a strange and dangerous world, and for the average person, it would catch them off guard in the following ways:

  1. All commerce will cease. The ATMs won’t work, the banks won’t open, and the cash registers won’t…well, register. For a while cash will be king, but if the crisis goes on for more than a few weeks, then people will view it as worthless. We’d be back to a barter economy in short order.
  2. Communications will shut down. If you think you can rely on your cell phone to work in a disaster, think again. In a crisis, when everyone instinctively reaches for their phone, that limit is quickly surpassed and the radios on the tower get sluggish, thus causing the fast-busy signal. Mobile analysts estimates that a cell site can handle 150 to 200 calls per second per sector. When a large group are making calls at the same time, the network can’t handle the amount of calls. More importantly, communications with police, firefighters, and ambulance services will cease. Many of the workers in these positions will try to soldier on, and keep doing the best job that they can for as long as they can. However, without ordinary citizens calling them to report crimes and emergencies, they’ll be helplessly watching their communities burn down around them. It won’t be long before they give up, ditch their posts, and return to their families.
  3. Without electricity, all forms of fuel that our society relies on will stop flowing. All of our vehicles will be dead in the water, and more importantly, the trucks will stop delivering food. The grocery stores will be stripped bare in hours, and will not be replenished for a long time. Even if you live in an area that is rich in agricultural resources, there may be no food to be had, since those farms rely on fertilizers and farming equipment that must be delivered by trucks.
  4. And of course many of those farms will lack water, as will your plumbing. For a couple of days after the power goes out, you’ll still have running water since water towers rely on gravity to feed the water to your home. However, electricity is required to clean that water and pump it into the tower. Once it’s out, that means that you won’t be able to flush your toilet. So not only dehydration be a major threat, but without the ability to remove human waste or wash your hands, every community will face daunting sanitation problems.
  5. When the grocery stores are stripped bare, the pharmacies won’t be far behind. Millions of people who rely on life saving medications could die in the weeks and months that follow. But perhaps more shocking is what would happen to the people who aren’t using drugs that are immediately life saving. 13% of Americans are using opioid drugs, which are highly addictive and cause horrendous withdrawal symptoms. Another 13% of Americans are on antidepressants, and likewise, the withdrawal symptoms are pretty problematic. In other words, within a few weeks after the grid collapses, about 25% of your neighbors are going to be in an awful mental state that is not conducive for survival.
  6. And finally, one of the most shocking things that people will have to deal with, is the lack of GPS. The GPS satellites will probably keep running, but eventually the devices that read those signals will give up the ghost. These days people are pretty reliant on GPS for directions, and there aren’t as many paper maps lying around. The average person is going to be utterly lost if the grid goes down.

In summary, law and order will break down at every level, and death will be around every corner. It’s one thing to grow up and live in an era that lacks electricity, but to be sent back to such a time on a moments notice would be one of the most challenging things that a person accustomed to modern amenities would ever face.

A Green Beret’s Guide To Building an Emergency Winter Shelter

ReadyNutrition Guys and Gals, we covered a few items on winter camouflage and winter preparedness training.  I’m going to throw out to you the concept of the winter shelter.  Most are self-explanatory.  Going into the basics, we need something to keep the snow from falling on our heads, as well as something to insulate us from the cold and the wind.  If you have no tent available, then it’s up to you to build something if the emergency arises.  Undoubtedly someone will comment about sleeping in the car, but circumstances may arise that may prevent that, such as a bad accident with leaking gas or combustible fluids.

The Simplest Survival Shelters

One answer for you is the lean-to, which is simply a couple of vertical poles jammed into the ground and a cross-pole (or cross-beam, if you will) lashed to the top across the two vertical poles.  Then you “lean” other branches across the top edge of your cross-pole, building a triangular shelter for yourself as you create this roof.  Ideally the rear can be on the slope of a hill or mountain without any runoff, leaving you a “front” to sit in at the edge of the lean to.

Tree-pit ShelterIn areas where heavy snows accumulate, you can also make a tree-pit shelter.  Excavate around the trunk of a pine tree with low boughs (a tree with thick branches and the boughs close to the ground).  If you have about two to three feet to dig, all the better in this case.  You’ll excavate about a 6-7’ diameter “hole” around the tree, and with the snow you remove, stack it up and pack it on the edges of the hole, building it up until you reach those bottom boughs.  You can also reinforce the construction by using boughs and dead branches to set the snow on top of.  Be creative, and use your imagination to make the situation fit your needs.  You want to make a front “gap” for yourself to squeeze through, and maybe a “door” out of pine boughs to close the gap off.


The principle being to create walls of snow that extend to the thick tree-boughs.  The tree will be your insulation topside, and the walls of snow akin to a semi “igloo” that will protect you on the sides. 


Reinforce those walls by placing branches on the inside vertically, stuck into the ground, or use a foam pad to run around the walls of the pit (Army issue ones work well).  Pack the top of the wall before putting branches and snow on the sides to build it up.  Don’t build a fire in the thing, unless you want to risk the fate of Jack London’s “To Build a Fire” character and risk bringing stuff down on top of you to smother you.  Also, don’t pick a tree heavily laden with a billion pounds of snow.

Why These Shelters Are Ideal

The principle is to crawl in this thing, taking support against the tree (lean against it to rest and sleep).  Even if you were buried, the tree itself will protect you and create an air pocket when you lean against it.  This type of shelter will buy you some time until you can build something a little more permanent.  If you did what I advised many moons ago, and packed your “A-bag”/bug-out happy-camper-survivor bag the way I advised, it’s packed per the season, and you should have a poncho and poncho liner in it.  The poncho can either be stretched out on the ground for a ground-cover, or used to solidify a lean-to and make it more waterproof.

The tree-pit shelter is for when you need to get out of the elements quickly.  If that can’t be done, you can dig a snow-cave for yourself.  With the poncho and/or a ground pad, you can insulate yourself from the ground and “hole up” in this snow cave (nothing more than a “spider hole” to protect you from the bite of the elements) and allow your body heat to warm up the hole.  It is the same principle that sled dogs use when they dig holes in the snow and bury themselves.  The principle is sound and can work for you as well.

Also for the tree-pit shelter: try not to pick a tree that is growing on the side of a mountain or hill.  You don’t need an avalanche to ruin your day on this one.  The lean to you can get out of.  Let the tree-pit shelter be on fairly-level ground, if you can make it so, and check it out thoroughly beforehand.  Be prudent and carry your pack with you should you have to leave the vehicle.  Practice building these shelters and familiarize yourself with them when you have the time, prior to an emergency occurring.  Stay warm, drink coffee, and take care of one another!  JJ out!

What You Need to Know About Nuclear Attacks

nuclearReadyNutrition Readers, as you have exciting fun during this holiday season – meals, Christmas presents, family dinners, and such – let’s not lose focus on the volatility of the world situation.  Just because Donald Trump won does not mean that the battle to restore the United States to a constitutional republic is over.  There are still enemies outside of the country and enemies within; do not lose sight of these facts.

The Nonsense Begins Around This Time

Usually, this time of the year is “great” timing for either an attack or some kind of military action.  Operation Just Cause in Panama (1989) was kicked off right around Christmastime.  Same for both Desert Shield and Desert Storm (’90 and ’91).  The nonsense always starts around this time of the year.  There are reasons for it.  The harvests are in, and there’s not a lot a civilian population can do during the winter to counter an invasion without great cost or discomfort.

Complacency is also a big reason.  While the U.S. invaded Panama in 1989, most people were out doing their shopping, eating in different restaurants in between shopping, and settling down in the house to watch football, eat, and relax.  While we in the U.S. (and most of Europe) are relaxing, the Chinese and North Koreans are not.  The Russians (while celebrating the season) do not relax.  I repeat my caveat from articles past:

The next world war will be initiated by an EMP device/weapon detonated over the continental U.S., followed by a limited nuclear exchange and war with conventional forces.

I stand by it because it is better to be either “wrong” or “late” in a prognostication 1,000 times than to be right (and unprepared) just 1 time.

In this regard, here are the basics for preppers and survivors out there who understand that vigilance is not paranoia.  Here are the basics concerning a nuclear attack.

The Three Effects of a Nuclear Bomb

  1. Heat (Thermal Effects) – The severity of the thermal effects will depend on your location. If you are at ground zero of the blast or within a mile of it?  It was nice knowing you.  2-5 miles of it, and you’ll probably be subjected to an intense fire wave and not survive it.  5-10 miles out, a lot of buildings and trees will be on fire, and you can receive burns on exposed skin, as well as retinal damage from the initial explosion’s excessive flash (flash burns can be either temporary or permanent).
  2. The Blast – Once again, proximity will be the factor that determines whether you survive. The blast has two parts:
  3. Overpressure – a large increase in air pressure far above what is considered normal.
  4. Dynamic pressure – akin to an extremely powerful blast of wind, outward from the center of the explosion

Within six to seven miles of the explosion, the “wind” speed can be between 90 to 120 miles per hour when the dynamic pressure component of the blast wave hits.  It would not be good to be out in the open, and you would also be exposed to things picked up by this wind and hurled at you.  Light damage would be sustained by buildings and structures about 15 to 20 miles from the blast.

5. Radiation – all the radiation is produced within the first minute of the explosion. An unprotected person within a couple of miles would be exposed to radiation in amounts that he or she could not live for long if initially surviving the heat and blast effects.  Then it takes about 24 hours for the remaining fallout to come back down to the earth.  Fallout is particulate matter (such as dust and dirt particles) sucked up into the fireball that “fall” back down to earth.  This applies in a ground-burst weapon, as airburst explosions detonate above a city and are the most “efficient” method to take it out, leaving a minimal amount of fallout.  With radiation, other factors such as weather and wind patterns must be taken into account to find the pattern of drift.  Usually, 3 weeks to a month in a shelter will enable the majority of the particles to deteriorate to livable levels.

Radiation comes in several different types.  Alpha particles are larger and attach themselves to debris.  They can be shielded against by clothing and brushed off, posing a danger only if they are inhaled, ingested, or enter through the skin such as in a cut or a burn.  Beta particles are also able to be kept off with thick clothing.  If Beta particles touch the skin, they will burn you, and can penetrate the skin.  Beta particles also can pose a problem if inhaled, ingested, or with entry through a wound or burn.  Gamma rays are very dangerous.  They go right through you and into you without protection from shielding.

Signs and symptoms of radiation poisoning are as follows: nausea and vomiting, malaise (overall weakness and sickness), blisters/ulcers of the skin, excessive visual disturbances, dizziness and vertigo, and excessive bleeding from minor and major wounds.  Also, keep in mind that radiation received is cumulative: a fatal dosage usually runs about 300 rads/roentgens or higher, but if you receive 200 at one exposure, you’re not safe with another exposure of 200, as it adds up to 400.  You need a survey meter (Geiger Counter) and a dosimeter to keep track of such exposures and the radiation received with them.

There are numerous sites and resources available to you on the Internet that will provide tables of thicknesses and degrees of protection for the various components of your shelter, whether field-expedient or planned.  The general rule is that the denser the material (such as steel and concrete, as opposed to soil, or wood) the better a protective factor it will render.  Mass and density are the two factors that will help to shield you from radiation.  The third is time, as radiation does decay rapidly with the exception of isotopes such as Strontium-90 or Uranium-238.

Your best protection is (of course) distance from the bomb…as much as possible, as well as shielding in a shelter with supplies and necessities gathered within that shelter beforehand.  To cover all the information you will need is beyond the scope of this article, the intent of which is to give you “food for thought” if you haven’t already taken such a thing into consideration.

To summarize, a nuclear attack can ruin your day if you haven’t prepared for it in advance.  When you look outside your living room window and find that the snowman has melted, the wicker furniture on the porch is on fire, and the chestnuts on the tree are roasted, along with the tree itself…that is a little too late.  As with any disaster natural or man-made, the time to prepare is before it happens and keeping in mind that complacency can kill you.  The disasters strike just when you think they will not, or at a time when everyone is at the dinner table having a grand time.  Be prepared with your supplies and in your mind and heart.  Keep fighting that good fight, and take care of one another.  JJ out!

The End State: 5 Triggering Events That Would Place the U.S. Under Martial Law

Image resultReady Nutrition Readers, as you are probably well aware, the Obama administration would like nothing more than to place the United States under Martial Law.

Once that is accomplished, the country and people would be locked down and kept under control on the pretext of continuing with the government and/or maintaining the national security of the U.S.

Let’s take a look at 5 events the administration would be most likely to utilize to reach this end state.

5 Triggering Events Could Put the U.S. Under Martial Law

Note: All of these can occur simultaneously, successively, or individually in any combination at any time: there is no limit to their use or potential to recur!

1. Economic Meltdown

Over the course of this past year, we have seen a tremendous amount of volatility in trade (international) and the U.S.’s domestic manufacturing base.  As our fragile economy is based on 75% of consumer spending, any significant downturn that keeps the shoppers home can lead to disastrous reports.  Lower consumer spending means people do not buy goods and services beyond the absolute essentials, and worse: (in the government’s eyes) they hoard money and withdraw their funds from bank accounts.

The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) can be seen as a key indicator of raw goods and materials transported to manufacturers and consumers via shipping contracts.  As mentioned in previous articles, Hanjinn Container Company, the7th largest container corporation in the world just filed for bankruptcy over the summer.  You can see the BDI fluctuations day by day when you visit http://www.bloomberg.com/quote/BDIY:IND.  It has been fluctuating wildly over the past year.

Deutsche Bank is on the verge of bankruptcy and large banks such as Bank of America and J.P. Morgan have been plagued by losses and lawsuits alike.  The unemployment rate is truly about 25% and the “Soviet” style statistics quacked from the radio on “record gains” and “economic improvements” are false and intentionally misleading.  A “Bank Holiday” has already happened in places such as Indianapolis, and when the politicians, bankers, and oligarchs decide, they will pull the plug on a Federal Reserve system of fiat currency that is already an ineffective laughingstock of a smirking world that is steadily returning to the gold standard.  When that Bank Holiday is declared, you can be sure the financial systems will collapse and Martial Law will be waiting in the wings.

2. Cyberattack

This one is definitely one of the administration’s favorites.  We’ve been seeing signs of this with the DHS (Department of Homeland Security) and DNI (Director of National Intelligence) letters and statements that the Russian government is hacking into the American electoral and election process.  The “targeting” of the DNC (Democratic National Convention) e-mails was assigned to the Russians and officially the Russian government has been accused by the administration of such, and trying to influence the presidential race on Friday, 10/14/16.

We also saw on 9/7/16, two days before the 5th North Korean nuclear test, the corporation based in California that monitors North Korean missile launches and nuclear testing was hacked into.  A DoS (Denial of Service) was placed into their computer systems, preventing them from uploading satellite feeds and photos that would have enabled them to monitor the North Korean launch.  That corporation is the Project on Crowdsourced Satellite Imagery.  You can read more about this in the article “DoS Attack Crashes Website Monitoring North Korea’s Nuclear Test Site,” by Eric Niiler of Wired.com.

If other governments can crash our internet and servers, do you think it is possible that the U.S. government as directed by the Obama administration can do it on its own? 

When that occurs, cell phones will go down, the computers will go down, the financial markets will be in a turmoil and cease trading, and ATM’s and bank cards will be rendered useless.  Transportation, inventories, shipping, and deliveries will all be thrown into a turmoil and come to a halt.  For an excellent description of this, read Mac Slavo’s article from SHTFplan.com entitledWhen the Trucking Stops,” that shows how vulnerable our nation’s supply lines are.  Bottom line: if all of this goes down as a result of a cyberattack, Martial Law will immediately follow.

3. “Unforeseeable/Black Swan” Event

As of last week, Obama just signed an Executive Order (EO), entitled Executive Order: Coordinating Efforts to Prepare the Nation for Space Weather Events,” signed 10/13/2016.  Such an EO could cover meteor strikes, Coronal Mass Ejections (CME’s) from the sun, a comet, or any other space anomaly.  Not a big deal, you may think?  It is a big deal, because here’s the bottom line:

Who is to prevent Obama from either causing another nation to launch an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) weapon, or launching one of his own (U.S.-made weapon), taking down the grid and subsequently blaming it on a CME event/solar storm, courtesy of the sun?

Other events would include potentially man-made or generated storms, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or even volcanic activity.  If one scoffs at such, remember all that it would need is a 1 megaton nuclear “kicker” to set off either Yellowstone Caldera or the San Andreas Fault.  Such natural disasters (initiated by man or genuine) usually result in Martial Law at the state level on a regular basis, much less one that is national in scope…that Obama would jump on to inculcate Martial Law.

4. Nuclear War/EMP Attack

Any day we could be at war with North Korea, Iran, China, or Russia.  The resulting devastation, whether a full-scale or a limited nuclear war would automatically set in motion the wheels for COG (Continuity of Government), and a declaration of Martial Law.

Let me close this portion with my caveat:

World War III will begin with the detonation of an EMP device or weapon over the continental United States, followed by a limited nuclear exchange and then conventional warfare.

5. Viral or Bacterial Pandemic

Either naturally-occurring, or man-made.  The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) just inherited a tremendous amount of “police power” over the summer regarding their newfound ability to quarantine individuals or large groups of people on the suspicion of contamination/communicability regarding viral or bacterial pathogens relating to a potential or real pandemic.

There is an article by Catherine J. Frompovich entitled “ALERT: U.S. CDC Giving Itself Unconstitutional Powers to Round Up and Detain Citizens En masse Anytime, Anywhere and Throw Away the Key,” dated on 9/3/16.  This article details how these police powers were created in the Federal Register as the Proposed Rule “Control of Communicable Diseases” on August 15, 2016 that are now in effect to be found under Federal Register Number: 2016-18103.  Guess what?  That proposed rule is now law, and could easily be utilized to “justify” Martial Law in the U.S. because of a pandemic: naturally-occurring, man-made, or phony.

In addition to all of these juicy tidbits, the deciding factor is what I refer to as the “IHM,” or “Incredible Human Mob.”  Yes, Civil Unrest is a factor; yet it is not a method but a “sign/symptom,” a “side-effect” of what happens when one of the aforementioned 5 methods are employed.  “In the interests of public safety,” or “to protect the public,” or “to maintain law and order” are the phrases trumpeted by our benevolent and friendly government.

As Rahm Emmanuel said, “Never let a crisis go to waste,” the very ones who are to be protected (the public) are the ones who create the conditions for civil unrest.  It’s literally a “problem that takes care of itself,” and here’s the bottom line to cover the Civil Unrest factor:

Using the fake justification “in the interests of the safety of the people,” martial law will be declared to confine, restrict, and control the people…protecting them from…themselves.

Then come the restrictions to travel, the police state in the streets, at the workplace, and the confiscation of firearms.  Then comes the removal of “dissidents and potential troublemakers,” as well as the curfews, restrictions, and limitations in every facet of our society.  Martial Law is an objective of the Obama administration.  The problem is that he (Obama) cannot just arbitrarily declare it.  The declaration requires a prod, such as one of the 5 methods mentioned.  In those circumstances, he then can suspend our rights under the Constitution and bypass the true laws of the U.S.  Such an end state is his desire.  Such an end state would also mean the end…of the United States.

Could the Next World War be Initiated with an EMP Weapon Over Continental U.S.?

ReadyNutrition Readers, undoubtedly you have read many of my articles that deal with an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) attack and nuclear war.  The reason these articles must be referred to and that I must keep writing them is to concentrate on the seriousness of the situation worldwide.

As of this writing, Kim Jong-Un has once again threatened the U.S. and South Korea with a nuclear war in response to the sanctions placed against North Korea after the G-7 summit and the G-20 meeting in Beijing, China.

The threats are not idle

Research any of the writings of Dr. Peter V. Pry, the foremost expert on EMP threat who regularly briefs the Congressional Commission to Assess EMP Threats against the United States.  Dr. Pry’s testimony and research conclude that both North Korea and Iran hold current military doctrines of an EMP first strike against the U.S., and North Korea (as affirmed by Dr. Pry) does indeed possess such a capability to hit the U.S. with an EMP.

Should a nuclear exchange occur, it will in all probability be limited (regarding U.S. targets) to key command, control, and economic locales.  Examples would be the following cities as primary potential targets: Washington, D.C., New York City, Norfolk, VA, Miami, FL, Seattle, WA, San Francisco, CA, and San Diego, CA, to name a few.  Limited nuclear war would be the focus, as foreign nations would wish to take the U.S. for her resources as much in one piece as possible.  I now give you my caveat that I have mentioned before:

The major problem resulting from an EMP knocking out all of our power will be the nuclear power facilities in the U.S.  Recently Dave Hodges of the Common Sense Show released warnings in an article entitled Trump Told EMP Attack to be Used to Stop the Election,” and you can go to this article to see what the short and long-term effects of an EMP attack would be on nuclear power stations and our electrical grid. Dave Hodges also received letters from some of these individuals – professionals in the nuclear power industry – who warned of testing being done both by DHS and FEMA to assess the effects of a power shutdown on nuclear power facilities.  The article is an excellently-written, very informative read that I highly recommend you to visit to pick up some good information on the fundamentals of how nuclear power plants are cooled and sustained.

After reading the article I conducted some research on my own.  You can visit the website www.nrc.gov/reactors that gives maps of nuclear power stations, courtesy of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.  The map (interactive) shows the number of reactors in each power station, and tells whether they are in operation or not.  You can also highlight any particular reactor you wish to learn more about, with detailed information such as location, age, and points of contact.  You can scroll even further on this page to find out about any safety violations or accidents in the plant.  There’s also a page with all of the reactors listed alphabetically by name.

There is also another resource for you that can be found when entering in “5 million tons of smoke created by 100 Hiroshima-size nuclear weapons,” in which you can learn information on the consequences of a regional (limited) nuclear war, and other studies that include an all-out nuclear war scenario.  The study was conducted at Rutgers University, the University of Colorado-Boulder, and UCLA.  The results list effects such as estimated casualties, the dropping of the temperature worldwide, climactic changes, and other noteworthy considerations.

The other site is the Cresson Kearney site that details a ton of information on Nuclear War Survival Skills, with a downloadable book that bears that same title.  Kearney’s site also tells you how to build a Kearney Fallout Meter out of simple materials, such as dried gypsum wallboard and aluminum foil, among others.  Now is the time to read up on, print off, and store as much of this material as possible.

Let us not forget: The Internet was “handed off” to ICANN by Obama on October 1, 2016, and we do not know what the effects of this will be.

Prepping essentials

Your preps: Bullets, Beans, and Band-Aids.  Stock up on as much fresh water as you can…enough for your family to have (optimally) at least a two-week supply per family member.  Survey meters (Geiger Counters) are hard to come by these days, but if you can get ahold of one for your family, along with a good Nuk-Alert radiation detector, and a dosimeter for each family member…then by all means, it is worth the cost.  It’s better to have and not need than to need and have not.  Prepare as much as you can while you still have the time.  Keep on rolling and fighting that good fight!

Hardcore Walking Dead Survival Tips for Preppers

darylSeriously, folks, I know you’re all probably fed up with zombies, especially since this is an election year.  Political zombies aside, I wish to mention this series of pop-culture, “the Walking Dead” can be (I stress “can be”) more than just an entertaining series.  It can serve as a valuable training tool for you and your family to prepare for the onslaught of the 14political zombies and what they unleash on us and the country. Heck, even the CDC is using it as a training tool.

Firstly, forget so much about the zombies.  Yes, they’re gruesome and a large part of it is Hollywood theatrics and special effects.  But what about this point I’m about to make:

What if you removed the zombies and kept the rest of it?

In other words, you could remove the zombies completely and focus on what the characters are facing within the series…an overall apocalyptic collapse, the fight for starvation and the complex interpersonal and micro-societal relationships and events that occur with said collapse.

One could easily remove all of the zombies and supplant them with say, nuclear war, or a devastating plague (sans zombies, which are the results of a hypothetical plague), or a complete series of breakdowns after a collapse of all governments in the world.  The zombies (as this piece relates to a training tool) are merely “props” who appear in one degree or another for a small portion or a big scene.

The characters in the movie are from a diverse array of backgrounds and levels of life.  The problems they face relating to one another are what can be focused upon.  All of the wonderful ailments that torment man in today’s society are present: theft, betrayal, infidelity, two of one gender vying for the same mate of the opposite gender, religious matters…it’s all right there.

How to Train for a Walking Dead Scenario

There are many matters of survival to be watched and either emulated or renounced, depending on the situation.

  1. Security is paramount to the character Rick Grimes and his group.  When the series first came out, the group was barely more than a fragmented collection of individuals.  Now (about to enter its seventh season) they have purpose, drive, and teamwork that has enabled them to perform security functions much more effectively.
  2. There is a tremendous amount of character development that is worth studying.  Some members of the group who were no good in the beginning are turning out to be stalwart pillars that all are relying upon, showing man’s adaptability and willingness to change for the better.  The group does not lose its humanity or capacity to be humane completely even in the light of adverse situations that would challenge anyone’s moral compass substantially.
  3. Methods of gathering food and foraging as well as water procurement, first aid, and leadership techniques are delved into in-depth.  Situations that arise within the films do arise in real life and especially during a disaster.  Barring your objections to watching such due to religious and moral sensibilities, if you’re able to see it for what it is…a fictitious account…and if you’re not squeamish about the zombies, it can be riveting.  In this facet, it can be a good training tool for members of the family who might be bored by standard training films or “Hallmark Card” disaster-flicks…where the neat, clean family on the happy picnic emerges from the disaster without a speck of dirt…picking up their picture-perfect picnic right where they left off.
  4. Reality is oftentimes grim, and another excellent factor of watching these films is that it helps viewers to mentally prepare for things that may happen…yes, a form of conditioning…regarding the scenarios.  In past articles I have mentioned the importance of making your training regular, realistic, and really interesting.  How could this be used regarding “the Walking Dead” series, you may ask?  How about this?
  5. Watch the episode with your family.  Take notes on things…all of you, just short “bullet” comments about what you’re viewing and what sticks out in your mind.  After the flick, conduct an AAR, military jargon for an “After Action Review” to see what everybody thinks.  Use the flick as a tool to discuss the situations that arise and what your critiques are on them…the mistakes, the successes, and what you would do as a family differently if in the situation faced by the characters.
  6. Then, guess what?  Spice things up further by maybe taking the family out on a subsequent day out in the woods, or out on a range to practice techniques that would help you in a similar scenario.  Working on marksmanship even with air rifles on zombie targets with the kids can be one exercise.  Working on signaling techniques and communication, or different methods to rendezvous when hiking or backpacking is another set of exercises.

The best part of all, and the most important part in JJ’s estimation: you’re doing something with your family that combines instruction with participation, and bonds all of you even closer.  Because, dear Readers, without those close bonds and the ability to support one another and depend on one another…we’re not maintaining a community.  The family is the basic community unit, and family means not just those by birth, but those we love and care about, and that feel the same toward us.

So in conclusion, make it interesting, make it real, and use it as something to make the kids and family look forward to.  Another thing I do?  For those I instruct in my locale…I note different parts of the series (as well as other series of war and disaster), note down the time it appears on the DVD, and keep it as a sort of “reference library.”  I list the topic covered.  When I want to highlight a part of training, I use my little portable DVD player and pop in the movie…and scroll right to the scene.  One picture can be worth a thousand words, and this is how I use films to train.  This article is 1,000 words, and I hope they help!  JJ out!

Here’s What Movies Forget to Mention About What Happens After Society Collapses

urban ruinsPost-apocalyptic movies are popular for a reason. We live in a world that is brimming with long lines, bills, traffic jams, bureaucracy, and stressful jobs. So even though we intuitively understand that living in an apocalyptic hellscape would be an absolute horror show, in the back of our minds we kinda wish that we had an excuse to blow off all of our modern responsibilities.

In that sense, post-apocalyptic movies and TV shows provide the perfect fantasy for us. They give us loner protagonists wandering through the quiet, windswept ruins of our cities, scavenging for food and fighting off zombies instead of working day jobs. These films try to convince us that post-apocalyptic living is an arduous but simple feat, in much the same way that Old Western movies romanticized the pre-modern world.

In short, these films depict the death of everything we hate about modern society, while downplaying the consequences of that state of affairs. They portray the leftovers of our society as a playground for charismatic misfits, but neglect to inform you of a very important detail. If the modern world falls apart, never to return, it’s going to leave behind an abundance of ticking time bombs in its wake.

They don’t show you what will happen to millions of our abandoned pets, who will revert to their wild instincts after we stop feeding them, and begin competing with their former owners for food. These films don’t show you what it’s like to walk through an abandoned suburban city, where ten thousand swimming pools have turned into breeding grounds for disease carrying mosquitoes.

They rarely mention the dozens of nuclear power plants that litter the United States. If no one is there to operate them, how long before they melt down and bury millions of survivors under a radioactive cloud?

Then there are the 12,000 facilities around the country that store large quantities of toxic or flammable chemicals, and reside close to residential areas. 2,500 of these sites contain chemicals in quantities that, if a catastrophic accident were to occur, could affect 10,000 to 1 million people each. And let’s not forget the 2.5 million miles of oil and gas pipelines that can be found in every state. They suffer hundreds of leaks and ruptures every year, and are much more likely to explode when they aren’t maintained. That detail seems to be conveniently forgotten by post-apocalyptic films.

And finally, most post-apocalyptic movies will forget to mention what happens when there aren’t any functional fire departments. Aside from the obvious consequences, like whole neighborhoods routinely burning to the ground, who’s going to put out landfill fires that are occasionally radioactive?

Another product of the modern world is the poor management of our national parks and forests, which has laid the groundwork for some of the largest and fastest burning forest fires in history. Even with the help of firefighters, these conflagrations routinely burn more than a 100,000 acres at a time. How many rural Americans are going to have to flee their homes from the veritable tidal wave of wildfires that would scorch the landscape?

Frankly, this is just a short list of some of the unexpected disasters that will be waiting for us if society collapses. There are probably plenty of others that we haven’t even considered yet. So the next time you’re enjoying a post-apocalyptic feature of some kind, try not to get too wrapped up in the fantasy it provides. If the world falls apart, traveling through the ruins of our dead civilization will be less like a whimsical action packed adventure, and more like traversing a mine field without a metal detector.

Land Navigation: Finding Your Way in an Urban Environment SHTF Style

 ReadyNutrition Guys and Gals, this is Part 3 for you in our land navigation series that touches on a subject that most do not consider.  In an urban environment, why would you need a map, right?  I mean, it’s the city…you just have to find the street, right?  Well, it is true that you need to know the streets and avenues, but it is an incomplete picture.  Urban Land Navigation poses different challenges in a survival situation than if you are in open terrain (rural).

6 Considerations to Keep in Mind When Navigation in an Urban Area

In an urban environment you need a map of the immediate vicinity of your home and your usual areas of travel on a daily basis.  The urban environment requires you to study various aspects of your home and home-range to figure out some things pertaining to exit/exfiltration.  Let’s list a few of them.

  1. Periodic points where you can take shelter
  2. Total distance you need to traverse to be free of the city/town
  3. Potential sources of food, water, and medical supplies you may need in your movement
  4. Physical danger locations: Is there a large dam near your house?  Unsafe bridges that may need to be crossed?  Large, swiftly-moving river with sewage/toxic chemicals, etc., that you may have to ford?
  5. Social “Hotspots”: Will you be traversing an area that passes through the “territory” of delinquent gangs (Crips, Bloods, etc.) that may place you at risk?
  6. Authorities: Remembering the “Good Guys” can turn bad at any given moment, where are the police stations, FEMA and DHS HQ’s, and National Guard outposts located regarding your departure path?

Now keep in mind, you’ll need a good map and it would also be a good idea to laminate it to protect it.  Then cut yourself a good, sturdy sheet of clear plastic sheeting to use as an overlay.  Dry erase is nice for a presentation, but what you want here is the old-fashioned “grease” pencils, like these. These are water resistant and can be used on glass metal and plastic. I highly recommend getting different colors of black and red pencils.  That is enough, as you don’t need to confuse yourself.  Use a binder clip to keep your overlay and your map together…your map shouldn’t be more than a square foot or so.  You’re attempting an exfil, not conducting a geological survey.  You also don’t want someone to find your map if you lose it and then know where you’re going.

This is a key point: You want to perform a route reconnaissance of how you want to leave the city.

Believe you me, you do want to leave the city ASAP!  The morning may have started out as “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” but it’s about to become John Carpenter’s “Escape from New York.”  Take your route from two scenarios: with a vehicle or on foot.  What might take you a few hours in a vehicle might take you several days on foot.  The “Bug-Out Bag” needs to be stocked up, and you need to know where everything is, and everything that is in the bag.

You don’t have time to “what if’ things, and dig for your handy compass-and-signal-whistle-flashlight.  You’ll have to move.  Other things that may help you are maps of subway systems that you can supplement with your main map.  Subways have places where you can potentially find sources for water, electricity, and field expedient tools that you may require.  Tie in the subway route with your planned evasion route.

Know where things are.  Know how many drugstores are in between you and your “finish line” for your route.  Know where there are any abandoned buildings, or sites under construction.  Know where there are buildings along the route that were previously classified (and placarded) as Fallout shelters.  Just because they removed the familiar black and yellow Civil Defense signs does not mean they aren’t still good to protect from fallout.

On your escape, you must keep this in mind: Always be ready for the original disaster to “morph” into multiple threats and/or a worse threat or threats.

An example would be an EMP.  Bad enough that you’re now back in the 1800’s in a millisecond.  Now you find that about ten miles away, a flash of light reveals itself, and here comes the mushroom cloud!  Your Casio G-Shock is not the only thing that may go dead if you do not take immediate action!

An urban environment is the most challenging of all places, because of the amount of people you’ll have to deal with and the number of confusing (and dangerous) situations that will arise when the SHTF.  Your land navigation fundamentals that we covered before still apply!  You will have to readily gauge the distance you travel and direction.  If you’re on foot, the challenges and dangers will be increased significantly.  The more you plot out where things are – potential grocery stores, drug stores, and places you can duck into and hole up in for a while – the better it will be for you.

Study all of the maps you can, and study the businesses that are in the area.  See what supplies and tools you will be able to scrounge when the SHTF.  It also can help you in terms of safety.  If you have to pass by a branch of the Dow Chemical Company, it might help to know what kinds of caustic or toxic chemicals are stored that might be ruptured in an attack and give you a “bad hair day” in addition to the attack.  All of this involves proper planning and coordination beforehand, but you have the time now.  Take advantage of this in your urban or suburban home, and lay out a good route for you and your family to take advantage of to get out of Dodge if need be.  Keep up the good work!

US Hasn’t Had Any Major Hurricanes in a Decade. Are You Still Prepared?

hurricaneHurricanes are probably one of the most common disasters that preppers will face. They can destroy homes, cut off utilities, hinder essential services, block roads, and cause widespread panic among unprepared citizens who often strip store shelves bare before the storm arrives. One way to look at this, is that hurricanes provide a localized version of the social collapse scenarios that preppers often worry about. So if there’s a silver lining in this type of disaster, at least it gives us an opportunity to try out some of our preps in a real world disaster.

In case you haven’t noticed though, it doesn’t seem like there have been very many hurricanes lately. There have been a few small ones, sure. Aside from Hurricane Sandy however, which was a category 2 storm when it made landfall in the United States, these storms haven’t been making many headlines in recent years.

That’s because we haven’t been hit by a major hurricane in over 10 years. As shocking as it may sound, it’s been over 3900 days since a storm measuring category 3 or larger has hit the US, which is longer than any previous record by over two years. Florida hasn’t been hit by a hurricane of any size in 11 years, and America’s side of the Gulf Coast, which is notorious for hurricane activity, hasn’t been hit by anything in 3 years.

So where did all of these heavy hitting storms go? They still pop up in the Atlantic every year, but they keep losing steam before they reach our shores, and in many cases they don’t reach us at all. Scientists aren’t really sure why. As best as they can tell, we’ve just been ridiculously lucky.

Once our luck does run out however, the devastation could be far greater that what we’ve seen in previous years. Some researchers think that after more than 10 years without any major hurricanes, people living along our coastlines aren’t as prepared as they should be, and neither are their communities.

“Hurricanes are going to hit the U.S. again and people are going to be shocked by the magnitude of the disaster,” said Roger Pielke Jr., professor of environmental studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The Associated Press reports Florida’s coastal communities have added 1.5 million people and almost a half-million new homes since 2005, the last time there was an onslaught of storms.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration projects that by 2020, the U.S. coastal population will have reached 134 million people, 11 million more than in 2010.

“Hurricane damage and destruction is a direct function of how much accumulated wealth there is,” Pielke said. “We’ve put a lot of stuff along the coast. If we’re in this 10-year drought, loss potentials in some places may now be two times higher than it was a decade ago.”

On top of that, there’s the simple fact that residents living in these areas may have let their guard down, and aren’t as prepared for hurricanes as they used to be. Plus you have millions of new residents living along the coasts who may not have much experience with hurricanes. When these storms start making landfall again, there’s going to be enough damage to make up for the past 10 years.

So if you happen to be living in an area that has been spared from hurricanes, don’t neglect your preps. Get ready for the next hurricane now before it’s too late.

How Much Time Would You Have to Prepare for a Supervolcano?

volcano wikimediaMost preppers probably don’t spend very much time getting ready for a supervolcano like Yellowstone to erupt. Or at least they don’t if they’ve done their research. While there are a handful of these volcanoes on Earth, each of which could devastate our planet’s environment for years, the time between each eruption can be measured in hundreds of thousands of years. In all likelihood, we’re not going to see one of these volcanoes erupt in our lifetimes.

On the other hand, supervolcanoes are still pretty scary, because they can erupt at anytime. They’re kind of like those old jack-in-the-box toys. They spend a lot of time building up pressure before unexpectedly blowing up in your face.

Which has to make you wonder, how much warning would the public get before one of these geological beasts blows up? Even if a supervolcano is overdue for an eruption, that could mean that it’s going to blow its top tomorrow or 10,000 years from now. Is it really just going to go off one day without any warning, or will there be signs that will tip us off ahead of time?

It turns out that yes, supervolcanoes would provide a few warning signs that would give us a fairly definite timeline before they go off, but unfortunately it’s not a very comforting timeline. According to a recent study, you’d have about a year or less to prepare.

Right before any super eruption though, there is one final stage — the decompression stage — characterized by the release of gas bubbles at the eruption site.

So, the study researchers decided to analyze quartz crystals at the site of one of these massive eruptions that erupted in California about 760,000 years ago, creating the Long Valley Caldera. Quartz crystals cover surface rims of eruption sites, so by analyzing them, the researchers were able to determine the rim growth rates times of the volcano based on the concentration of titanium in the crystals. By measuring the size and growth rates of these rims, they were able to determine the length of time it took for an explosion to happen once the decompression phase had begun.

Their analysis showed that more than 70% of rim growth occurred in less than a year, indicating that the quartz rims grow mostly in just the days or months prior to an eruption.

At first glance, most preppers would find that kind of warning to be a relief. After all, if someone told you that say, a nuclear war was going to happen in a year or that a tsunami was going to wipe out your home in a few months, you would have plenty of time to either get ready or get out of dodge.

But with a supervolcano, you’re dealing with a disaster that people and governments would need more time to prepare for. Depending on where the volcano is positioned, millions of people may need to be evacuated, which even with a year’s heads up could turn into a massive humanitarian disaster.

And then there’s the ash that would spew over an area that could be as large as nearly 200,000 square miles, and piled several inches deep on the ground after it settles, screwing up crops and clogging rivers and streams in the process.

And finally, the volcano could expel massive amounts of gasses like sulfur dioxide, which would reflect the sun’s rays away from the Earth. That would likely cause unusual rain patterns and freezing weather, in regions and seasons that wouldn’t normally have those conditions. There’s no doubt that we’d be faced with massive crop failures all over the world. And if that’s not bad enough, this scenario could play out over the course of a decade.

There are already hundreds of millions of people who don’t have food. There’s no telling how many of them would die within a decade, or how much geopolitical insecurity that could cause. When you think about it, a supervolcano could totally shatter the current world order, for better or for worse, and that’s not really something any person or government could prepare for in less than a year.

Do You Live in a Flood Zone? You’ll Want to See This.

flood-truck_RNLiving in a flood zone is a lot like living next to a time bomb. You have no idea when it’s going to go off. Though some areas are flooded on a routine basis, those communities tend to be more prepared for such events. The real danger lies in living in a 50 year or a 100 year flood zone. The threat is great enough that it will probably happen in your lifetime, but not so great that you can expect local authorities and the local infrastructure to handle it properly.

But regardless of where you live, if there’s any chance of water reaching your home, you’ll want to do whatever you can to prepare for that event. Aside from fires, floods can cause the most expensive damages to your home, and that’s assuming your home isn’t completely destroyed.

Thankfully, there is a rather unique method for guarding your home from flood water. Though it’s pretty expensive, it pales in comparison to the cost of flood damages. It’s called the Aqua Dam, and it made headlines last month when Texas was being inundated with flood waters.

According to the company that makes the Aqua Dam, it’s actually cheaper per square foot that sandbags, and is far easier and faster to install in an emergency. As an added bonus, the Aqua Dam can be used for storing potable water, which can be hard to come by if a storm damages local utilities. With attributes like that, I have a feeling that this product is going to be a hot commodity among preppers in the near future.

How Would You Survive Hyperinflation in Venezuela?

printing-moneyVenezuela is currently in the throes of a devastating economic collapse that was spawned by the ignorant socialist policies of the Chavez/Maduro government. Everything is falling apart there. The water system, the roads, the electrical grid, the hospital, and especially the food distribution system. Venezuelans are so desperate that they are forced to scrounge for food in dumpsters and hunt down cats and dogs. Crime is rampant as well, and the capital city of Caracas now has the highest murder rate in the world. Mobs of vigilantes are frequently seen picking up the slack of the corrupt police; that is, when they’re not busy looting grocery stores. Venezuela is practically a war zone now.

However, the worst part of this economic collapse is the rapid inflation of Venezuela’s currency. That may sound minor when compared to soaring crime rates and dumpster diving, but the diminishing status of Venezuela’s currency (the bolívar) is what enables so many of the moral and financial tragedies in that country. To one degree or another, inflation is related to every facet of Venezuela’s collapse.

In 2003 the situation was quite different. A dollar could be exchanged for 1.6 bolívars. Now the exchange rate is 172 bolívars per dollar, but that’s just the official exchange rate. That’s what you would get if you walked into a Venezuelan bank. On the black market, it would take 996 bolívars to buy a single dollar. With an inflation rate of 180% (and those are just the official numbers) Venezuela’s currency fits the definition of hyperinflation.

Considering how much damage this hyperinflation has done to the economy and the very fabric of society, it has to make you wonder. What would you do if this happened in your country? What steps could you take to survive when your money becomes worthless?

Much has already been written on the subject, and most preppers are already familiar with this sound advice: take your rapidly diminishing currency, and buy something that will at least hold its value no matter how many zeros show up on your money. The most common assets that are recommended for preserving your wealth include:

  • Precious metals
  • Cash held in other currencies
  • Land
  • Non-perishable food
  • Drugs and other medical supplies
  • Weapons and ammunition

However, I would say that what you need to survive hyperinflation is the same thing that is crucial to your survival in any disaster. You need to have the right skills, which for this scenario, would fall under two categories. First, you need to know how to do things that will help you get by when society at large is falling apart. The kind of skills that aren’t as essential when you live in a prosperous nation, such as:

  • Growing food
  • Hunting and gathering
  • First Aid
  • Car Repair
  • Self Defense
  • Bartering

And second, you need the kind of skills that will make you money no matter how bad things get. Just because hyperinflation tends to screw up society, doesn’t mean everything is going to completely grind to halt. People will still need basic goods and services, and they will still desperately want to live in a functional society, even if it’s just the shadow of a functional society. You’ll still be able to find a job.

However, just as hyperinflation diminishes the value of a currency, so to will many jobs pay less during and after a collapse. That’s not just because the money isn’t worth the same. With so much widespread poverty, everyone will be desperate to enter the job market, including the very young and the very old. In other words, the labor pool will have lots of supply and very little demand, so employers will have the economic leverage to pay their workers a pittance. However, some jobs will be able to retain some of their value, such as:

  • Just about anything to do with the medical field
  • Farming
  • Private security
  • Mechanics, plumbers, electricians, or repairmen of any kind
  • Teachers and tutors, especially if they can impart money-making skills

At the end of the day however, your skills will only get you so far depending on how long the crisis lasts. In the case of Venezuela, the situation is about as dire as it can get. Sometimes an economic collapse merely destroys any chance of prosperity for the average citizen. But in Venezuela, the economic climate hasn’t just killed prosperity. It has made it damn near impossible for anyone to survive.

So at the end of the day, the best way to survive an economic collapse is to flee the country. Everyone in your family should have their passports, and enough money to leave the country before the SHTF. In Venezuela, everyone who could leave did so a few years ago. Now most people can’t even afford to leave their city, much less the country.

Be prepared to lose most of the money you’ve spent your whole life saving, because even before the collapse occurs, the government will likely have laws in place that will prevent you from taking money out of the country. However, that may be a small price to pay in exchange for not living in hell hole where you have to eat trash to survive. Cut your losses and start a new life in a new country if you can. You’ll pat yourself on the back when your homeland collapses, because it is always better to be a poor man in a rich country, than a dead man in a poor country.

7 Natural Supplements You Should Have in Case of Nuclear Fallout

In this type of emergency, it is paramount that you understand the differences in radiation exposure.

Contamination – This is usually unintended contact from radioactive material such as dust or liquid. This type of exposure may be internal or external, but nevertheless, causes poisoning to the body.
Irradiation –  This is the process by which an object is exposed to radiation, but not radioactive material. This usually occurs with x-ray machines, cancer treatments and blood transfusions. That said, the exposure can originate from various sources, including natural sources. Irradiation can involve the whole body, which, if the dose is high enough, can result in systemic symptoms and radiation syndromes or a small part of the body (i.e., from radiation therapy), which can result in local effects.

Now we’re going to outline some aids you can use. Having these essential supplements on hand will assist in helping the body prevent the absorption of radiation. As well, it is recommended that each family member have a bottle each of these natural supplements stored.

  1. Calcium and Magnesium: these minerals combat the uptake of Strontium 90 by over 90% when taken. Studies were conducted by Dr. Linus Pauling showing how the calcium blocks the uptake of this dangerous radioisotope.

  4. Bee Pollen: can drastically reduce the harmful side effects of radiation exposure. This is beneficial to those undergoing chemotherapy.  The side effects such as that of radium, x-rays and cobalt-60 radiotherapy can be buffered against with the bee pollen.  Bee pollen intake is a natural method of boosting vital functions, such as red and white blood cell and antibody production.  These functions are hampered by radiation, be it an uncontrolled release or a controlled therapy.
  5. Oils: Extra virgin olive oil, coconut oil, and hemp oil can remove radiation. Studies have shown that the lipids in these oils (and other oils as well) bind to toxins, as well as strengthening cellular membranes.  Various studies agree that if you have been exposed, drinking 4 ounces of oil can neutralize the toxins and help pull the radiation out of your system, as well as strengthening your cellular tissues.
  6. Chlorella: is a single-celled green algae that is extremely useful in detoxification of tissues; it can be used concurrently with the other aids mentioned for the removal of radiation from your system.
  7. Iodine tablets: use those approved specifically for a nuclear disaster/exposure to radiation. What Happens to Nuclear Power Plants Following an EMP?

 ReadyNutrition guys and gals, we have covered some bases on the EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) and how to prepare the home and supplies against it.  One of the major problems with the EMP is not just what will not work regarding unshielded equipment, but what will happen when certain things do not run anymore.  What I’m referring to the real danger of nuclear power plants throughout the United States.  Not only will there be a shortage of power, but there will be a larger problem: radiation.

A large percentage of electricity goes into maintaining and cooling the spent fuel rods in a nuclear power plant installation.  A prime example is a Nuclear Facility that may have one working (running) reactor and two that are shut down with spent fuel rods.  This is not uncommon to find.  Now, follow the reasoning: when the primary power shuts down and the backup is rendered inoperable, how is coolant water to be pumped to cool the spent fuel rods?

We saw what happened with Fukushima, and most of us remember the horror story that almost emerged with Three Mile Island nuclear power facility in Harrisburg, PA.  The reason this is being mentioned here is that these things need to be taken into account with regard to your preparations.  What good is it to make it through the initial nuclear attack when the attack renders your nearest nuclear power facility a ticking time bomb regarding spent fuel rods?

There was an interesting movie entitled Olympus Has Fallen starring Gerald Butler.  The premise revolved around terrorists wishing to turn the tables and utilize all of the US nuclear sites against itself…missiles, reactors, and what not.  This is not far-fetched.  A good thing to research would be the proximity of the nuclear sites to your home.  This photo comes from the International Nuclear Safety Center, and I think it substantiates my concerns.

mapYou can see by the photo that the largest concentration of nuclear power facilities is located in the Northeast and the Great Lakes regions of the United States.  Localize these facilities in your home state and you can then conduct the kind of research you need that will help protect you.  There are some questions you should ask.  What are the containment procedures in case of a power loss?  How much material is being stored in the facility?  What are all your distances of the facility from your home, where you and your family work and go to school, etc.  What routes would you use should the unthinkable actually occur?

You may wish to consider a good fallout meter (also known as a radiological survey meter, or Geiger counter), along with dosimeters and other cumulative radiation monitors.  The Nukalert monitor will actually let out a “chirping” noise when you come into a nuclear-irradiated area.  There are also hazmat suits/NBC suits that you may purchase.  As in all dangers and disasters, there are a certain amount of things that are out of your control; however, there are also many things you can do to prepare for them.  Research and planning is crucial in your preparations, and I highly recommend studying your area for as much information as you can find regarding this important topic.  Have a good day, and keep up the good work!

Someday, This Humble Fungus Could Kill Millions of People

He developed these strains in countries like India, Mexico, and Pakistan, and with the help of modern agricultural techniques, he helped these countries double their wheat yields in less than a decade. Borlaug’s crops were so successful at bringing food security to the third world, that it’s estimated his efforts have since saved over a billion lives.

That should give you a pretty good idea about how important wheat is to the global food supply. There are literally billions of people who are living right now, because modern civilization is so good at growing this stuff. Imagine what would happen if something threatened even a small percentage of the world’s wheat yields.

Unfortunately, that something exists and it goes by the name of Ug99, a strain of stem rust fungus that is known to kill wheat plants.

Since 1998, Ug99 has been sweeping its way across Africa to the Middle East from its origin in Uganda. Altogether, 11 confirmed races in the Ug99 lineage have been detected in Egypt, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iran, Kenya, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Yemen and Zimbabwe, showing that the pathogen has evolved and expanded widely, according to recent research by Singh, Hodson and collaborators.

Trans-boundary pathogens blown by the wind, spread by travel and commercial trade, pose an increasing threat to global food security. Emerging strains colonizing new areas can cause significant crop losses. Pathogen changes in one region can quickly migrate with serious consequences to more distant regions.

So just how bad is Ug99? When a single spore lands on a wheat farm, it’s been known to eventually multiply and kill 100% of the crop, before making the leap to neighboring farms. Though there are some breeds of wheat that are resistant to it, less than 10% of the farms in the countries where it has shown up, actually grow them. And many of these wheat strains are of the same variety that Norman Borlaug developed decades ago. Thus, the spread of this stem rust threatens to derail decades of agricultural progress in the third world.

But truth be told, it may not stay in the third world for very long. Much like a virus, stem rust can ‘infect’ people. The spores can cling to clothing and travel anywhere in the world. Each acre of stem rust infected wheat can create billions of spores, so it wouldn’t be far-fetched for someone to brush shoulders with one of these crops, and spread it to anywhere in the world.

In any case, it could still make the leap to the developed world even without human help. It’s widely believed that stem rust spores could conceivably be blown across the ocean and into Australia, one of the world’s largest wheat producers. And if it can make it there by natural forces, it can make it anywhere.

While the scientific community is busy trying to figure out a way to deal with this threat, the Ug99 fungus has always been one step ahead of them. It’s a rapidly evolving organism that has adapted to nearly every strain of wheat that it has come across. Fortunately, dozens of wheat genes that are resistant to it have been discovered, so there is some hope that it can be beaten in much the same way that it was beaten in the past: by breeding resistant strains of wheat with the ones that aren’t resistant.

However, a successful breeding program would take years to develop. In fact, you would probably need separate programs for different regions and climates. And once several highly resistant plants were created, it would take several more years before the world’s farmers could make the switch to the new wheat strains. Until that happens, Ug99 will loom over the global food supply, threatening to eliminate sustenance for millions, or perhaps even billions of people.

These Food Essentials Should Be in Every Bug Out Bag

bug out foodNo matter how well-prepared and stocked your bug out location is, you should always carry food in your BOB in case you are unable to get to your destination.
When most people think of emergency rations, they think of MREs. However, Joshua Krause wrote an excellent article on what happens to most people who consume them.
“In the past, a lot of veterans have reported severe constipation for the first few days, sometimes followed by the exact opposite for another few days.”

Being painfully bloated and tied in gastric knots followed up by a severe case of the trots is not how I would like to spend my time when the SHTF. If you’re like me and have food allergies, finding an MRE or any other prepared, ready-to-eat meal becomes a challenge. Any food packed in a BOB needs to be lightweight and calorie-dense. The best option is to learn to make your own specifically tailored to your taste buds and diet restrictions.

Breads

Grains have been called the Staff of Life. They can supply much needed carbohydrates (energy) needed for the sustained hiking one might find themselves doing if the SHTF. They can also help satiate an appetite (fill you up) when other food sources aren’t as plentiful.

Hard Tack

This plain, simple bread can last for a year or more. But it is also as hard as a brick, doesn’t provide many calories per ounce, and I would have to be starving to eat it. However, soaked in a liquid like broth or milk, it becomes quite filling. Ideally, you should strive for 125 calories per ounce (weight measure) for your food. Hard Tack falls short, but has the added benefit of an extremely long shelf life without any kind of refrigeration.

This recipe, from Practical Primitive, is one of my favorites:

Gather your ingredients:

  • 1 cup white flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 cups of honey
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Grease a muffin⁄cupcake tin in preparation for the batter. This will keep it from sticking. (You could also use paper cupcake liners, so long as you spray them well with a good no-stick cooking spray. Otherwise you’ll never get the papers off!)
  3. In a large bowl, thoroughly mix together the white flour, whole wheat flour, (any additional flours) and cornmeal. In a mixing bowl, mix ingredients. (Feel free to experiment with substituting different types of flour. We’re substituting a ¼ cup of the white flour with Amaranth flour.)
  4. Take the 2 cups of honey and heat them carefully in a small sauce pan until the honey has become thin and runny. Do not allow it to come to a boil.
  5. Pour the honey into the flour mixture and combine until the honey has been completely mixed in with the flour. If the batter is too thick, add some hot water, a little at a time, until the batter is of a thin enough consistency to drop off a spoon.
  6. Fill each greased cupcake holder about ½ full with batter. (Makes about 18 cakes.)
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes, until cakes are golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  8. Turn the finished cakes out from the pan and allow to cool. While still warm the cakes will be relatively soft, but as they cool they will lose their spongy texture and within a few days will become hard as rock!

This bread requires NO refrigeration and will last almost indefinitely — but once it hardens be sure to soak it in some milk or coffee or some sort of liquid first, or your teeth might regret it!

Legend has it that this next bread was originally created in 1950 to climb Mount Logan. There are many variations of this recipe on the Interwebs, and that’s the beauty of it: you can modify it to suit your tastes. This recipe, from How to Wilderness, is hands down my favorite. Not as non-perishable as Hard Tack, but certainly much more delicious!

Logan Bread

Dry Ingredients:

  • 2 c. wheat flour
  • 2 c. white flour
  • 2 c. quick oats
  • 3/4 c. brown sugar
  • 1/2 c. powdered milk
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon

Wet Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 3/4 c. honey
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 3/4 c. oil

Goodies:

  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 3/4 c. honey
  • 1/2 c. molasses
  • 3/4 c. oil

Cooking Instructions:

1. Heat oven to 300F.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients.
3. Add liquid ingredients and stir thoroughly.
4. Add goodies. Feel free to improvise your own.
5. Pour into a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.
6. Cook at 300 degrees F for one hour.
7. Remove from oven, and cut into desired pieces (2 x 3 inches).
8. Return to oven at lowest setting possible, with door slightly open.
9. Cook for another hour or so to further dry.
10. Remove, cool, then wrap cut squares in plastic.

Healthy Choices: Fruits, Nuts, and Veggies

GORP (“Good Old Raisins and Peanuts” aka Trail Mix to most Americans) has been a favorite of backpackers for many years. There’s some debate over whether it’s more economical to buy pre-made GORP from the store or to make it at home. Personally, I prefer to make my own GORP. I have more control over the ingredients by incorporating homegrown fruits and veggies, can omit ingredients I don’t like or my family members can’t eat due to allergies, and I am assured that each one ounce serving contains at least 125 calories.

To get started, choose a recipe that sounds good to you. There are many on the Internet from savory to sweet. Next, use a calorie calculator like this one to determine the caloric content of each ingredient listed. I divide my batches into smaller snack-sized bags which I then put into a larger Ziploc quart-sized freezer bags. The additional weight of the thin snack bags in nominal while allowing easier rationing to insure proper caloric intake while the added thickness of the freezer bags helps protect the GORP in my backpack. Single-serving sized bags also allows me to trade or share with others on the trail without revealing my entire cache.

Protein and Fat

A properly mixed GORP can provide all the protein and fat needed to sustain your nutritional requirements, but menu fatigue can set in quickly. Menu fatigue has been documented in military, polar expeditions, and even in space settings and can cause a lower food intake and weight loss. Obviously, these two things that should be avoided during the high energy needs of bugging out on foot. To counter it, pack a sweet and a savory GORP recipe.

Another option is jerky.  Learning how to make your own jerky is an excellent prepping skill.  The National Center for Home Food Preservation recommends using a heat source, like a low oven or a dehydrator to insure food safety, however, humans have been drying meat naturally without electricity for centuries.

Bugging out on foot, under extreme stress, while carrying a load in (potentially) rugged terrain requires A LOT of calories.  There is no better dense caloric source than fats.  Deficiencies in Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) can cause “…dry skin, hair loss, and impaired wound healing” (Source).  This recipe for Super Spackle (trust me, it’s much more delicious than the name implies) will deliver the calories and ESAs needed to keep you fueled and healthy.

Conclusion

Preparing to bug out on foot if the need should arise requires physical fitness (BUGGING OUT: TRAINING IS ONLY WAY TO BE READY) and lightweight calorie-dense foods.  Be sure to include different taste sensations, and the correct balance of carbohydrates, protein, and fats.  Knowing how to prepare a variety of trail-worthy foods can help avoid menu fatigue and insure your survival while on the move.

This Is the One Global Disaster That Most People Aren’t Aware Of

In general, preppers have a pretty well-rounded awareness of all the ways our communication systems can break down. If anything, the failure to communicate with modern technology is at the root of any serious disaster, including solar storms, nuclear war, or emp attacks. There are also the more conventional disasters like earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, and in some cases famine and plagues if they go on long enough. Truth be told, it’s not really a disaster unless phone lines, televisions, and the internet are knocked out in some capacity.

But the one disaster that most preppers aren’t aware of is known as the Kessler syndrome. This scenario was first proposed by NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler in 1978, who suggested that in the near future, the accumulation of space trash would make it nearly impossible for us to maintain satellites in Earth’s orbit. The theory goes that as more satellites are placed into orbit, there will be more debris floating around our planet, which will eventually lead to a cataclysmic chain reaction.

At the heart of the matter is the fact that it’s pretty much impossible to put something into space without leaving something else behind. And after sending thousands of objects into orbit over the past 60 years, there are now 170 million man-made objects orbiting our planet, and nobody has figured out how to remove this debris. These objects include equipment left behind by astronauts, nuts and bolts, spent rocket stages, abandoned satellites, and everything in between. Some are as small as paint chips, while others are the size of semi trucks.

Obviously, this poses a serious threat to any operating space station or satellite. On a good day these objects can wear down equipment by sandblasting them over a period of time, but larger objects can instantly obliterate a satellite. This would in turn, produce thousands of additional objects that also have the potential wreak havoc. And on and on it goes until you basically have a wall of impenetrable trash flying around our planet at speeds of around 17,500 mph, destroying everything in its path.

And that is the Kessler Syndrome in a nutshell. It would essentially make it impossible for anyone to put a satellite in orbit. And make no mistake, it’s already happening right now. On average, about one satellite is destroyed by space debris every year. It’s only a matter of time before this problem cascades into an unmitigated disaster.

So what would this mean for everyone on Earth?

The most immediate problem would be the destruction of GPS satellites. While most of us think of GPS as the thing that made road maps obsolete, there is a bit more to it than that. It also helps guide global shipping, keeps aircraft on track, aids disaster relief operations, and connects overseas cell phone calls.

For the most part however, it wouldn’t have a significant effect on people living in and around major cities. Instead, it would be disastrous for rural and isolated parts of the world, where satellites provide the only means of electronic communication. No more satellite television, cell phones, internet, or radio. Large swaths of the planet would be turned into communication dead-zones.

The one organization that would be hurt the most though, is the US military. The collapse of the GPS network would be pretty damaging by itself. There are multiple weapon systems that have GPS chips embedded in them to ensure accuracy, such as ICBMs, cruise missiles, and other precision guided bombs.

It’s also essential for land navigation, and the target tracking of those aforementioned weapons. Our GPS satellites are also equipped to detect nuclear denotations anywhere in the world. On top of all this, there are satellites for global reconnaissance, early warning systems for hostile ICBM’s, and covert communications. In other words, without satellites, our high-tech military is dead in the water.

As you can see, the Kessler Syndrome would have huge ramifications for life on Earth. It would spell the end for thousands of critical satellites that are currently in orbit, and there’s no telling how long it would take to alleviate the situation. It could take decades before we figure out how to clean everything up, and rebuild our current satellite network. It wouldn’t be the end of the world by any means, but its effects would be felt by nearly everyone on Earth for years to come.

Bugging Out: Training Is What Really Prepares You For the Real Thing

bugoutSeveral years ago I had an encounter with a bear that made me realize I wasn’t in as good of shape as I thought I was.  I knew that being physically fit was a key element to being prepared, but as a mom with three kids, I just didn’t have the money or time to join a gym.  At the time, I’d say I was about as fit as the average person- maybe a little more so because the average person doesn’t regularly lift 50-pound sacks of feed, but if there was one area that I was sorely lacking in it was cardio-fitness.  I had long ago become accustomed to my daily chores and none of them raised my heart rate very much.

Getting Started

It costs nothing to wear your everyday clothes and go for a walk, which is exactly what you’ll most likely be doing if you need to bug out on foot if the SHTF.  The best way to train for anything is to wear and use the clothes and equipment while training that you’d be wearing and using during the actual event.  This allows you to become familiar with the way your equipment feels and to train for muscle memory.

” Muscle memory has been used synonymously with motor learning, which is a form of procedural memory that involves consolidating a specific motor task into memory through repetition. When a movement is repeated over time, a long-term muscle memory is created for that task, eventually allowing it to be performed without conscious effort. This process decreases the need for attention and creates maximum efficiency within the motor and memory systems. Examples of muscle memory are found in many everyday activities that become automatic and improve with practice, such as riding a bicycle, typing on a keyboard, typing in a PIN, playing a musical instrument, or martial arts.” (Source)

So, unless you plan on bugging out in gym clothes while riding a stationary bike, train exactly as you plan to bug out.  For me, the ultimate goal was to be able to hike in rugged terrain while wearing a backpack.

Assess Your Fitness

Always know your baseline health before you start any fitness regimen.  If possible (and applicable), get your cholesterol, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and resting heart rate checked.  These readings will allow you to determine where your overall health stands now and will give you a baseline to compare to as you improve.  What you should NOT do is weigh yourself.  Weight, in this context, has nothing to do with fitness and will only serve to distract you from your true goal.  Remember, this isn’t about meeting some arbitrary standard of beauty- this is about becoming prepared to face physical challenges in the event of an emergency.

Next, determine where you are most likely going to be should you need to bug out and where you intend to go and then plot that course.  Typically, your start point (Point A) is going to be the place you spend the majority of your week.  Getting the baseline for your ability to go from point A to point B is simple- walk out the door wearing your everyday clothes, shoes, and nothing else.  Go empty-handed and without your BOB.  Note the time you start and walk as fast as you can (without breaking into a trot) for as long as you can, then note the time again.  Make note of how far you’ve come. This is your Point B. Walk back at a leisurely pace, if you like.  No need to hurry- after all, during a real bugout, you won’t likely be racing back to where you just came from.

The first time I did this I had to stop and sit down to catch my breath.  I also chose a day that was fairly hot and I was very thirsty by the time I made it back home.  Of course, one should never risk their life by attempting this in severe weather.

Building Up

Repeat the above every day until you can reach Point B without feeling taxed.  You’ve just achieved muscle memory.  Congratulations!  You’ll also notice that you’re able to get to Point B much faster than your baseline time.  If you’ve fallen short of reaching your bugout destination, it’s time to up the game.  Do the same thing you did on your first day, but this time push yourself beyond Point B as fast as you can (again, without breaking into a trot) until you can’t go any farther.  Make a note of how long it took you to get from Point A to Point C.  If you still haven’t reached your bugout destination, continue repeating the pattern until you can without feeling taxed.  Don’t get discouraged if you need to run through half (or more) of the alphabet before you can walk to your bugout destination empty-handed.  It takes time to Build Up this kind of muscle memory and endurance.

If you find you’re able to get from Point A to your bugout destination on your very first try effortlessly, it’s time to gear up.

Gearing Up

Once you’ve been able to go from Point A to your bugout destination empty-handed as quickly as possible and with very little effort, it’s time to start adding gear.  It’s best to keep your hands free (more on this later) and use the equipment you intend to bugout with.  Consideration should also be given to your footwear.  If you’re hoofing it, nothing beats a backpack.  If need be, start light- this might mean just an empty backpack.  If you’ve never worn one for more than a short period, you might be surprised at how sore your shoulders can become with very little weight.  Adjust all your straps to get an appropriate fit.  An excellent tutorial can be found here.

If you’re a woman, be sure to get a backpack designed for a woman.  Our skeletal structure is different, especially across the shoulder area and we have boobs.  A poorly fitted backpack has a much greater chance of either pinching us across the shoulder joints and under the armpits, or will be too large no matter how tightly adjusted.  And there are no words to describe how uncomfortably painful an ill-fitting sternum strap can be, especially if it sits too low.

If you feel you can handle some weight, measure out some dried beans or rice and seal into Ziploc bags.  I like to measure out both five- and ten-pound bagsful so that I can distribute the weight evenly inside the backpack and add or remove in increments.  I use rice or beans for a variety of reasons: they’re inexpensive.  If I find that I just can’t carry that load home because I pushed myself too far or developed a blister and need to lighten my load, I can dump the rice or beans out on the ground without stressing over the few cents they cost me.  They’re also biodegradable and will either sprout or compost easily.  The plastic bags weigh next to nothing and I can put it back in my pack.

Now is also a good time to add containers of water.  Be sure to weigh your filled water containers.  I like to carry a combination of both.  The maximum combined weight of beans or rice and water shouldn’t exceed 20 pounds initially.  More can be added later for most healthy, physically fit adults under the age of 70.

Start the process over again, this time with a backpack, using the same steps you followed in Building Up until you’re able to reach your bugout location as quickly and effortlessly as possible with the addition of the pack and weight.  Keep increasing the weight in your pack until you’ve reached the maximum you can safely carry.  Make a note of how much your max weight is- it will vary by person.

 Dress Rehearsal

Once you’re able to go from Point A to your bugout location quickly and effortlessly while wearing your pack loaded with your bug out meals to the maximum weight you can carry, it’s time to take out the dried goods and fill your pack with your bug out gear.  Weigh each item you intend to carry, including water and food.  The total combined weight of gear, supplies, water, and food shouldn’t exceed the maximum weight you were able to carry before.  Practice loading your pack and rearranging items as needed to get the best weight distribution for your gender and size.  Build Up with a fully loaded pack containing your bugout gear.

Optional considerations: if you’re practicing in an area that would allow you to safely carry the weapon of your choice without getting arrested or scaring your neighbors, do so now.  Families with babies or toddlers should consider practicing this trek while wearing a baby backpack appropriate for the age of your child and include older children to Build Up along with you.  Likewise, those with dogs, especially dogs big enough to carry a pack, should include the dog from start to finish.  Dogs need time to Build Up their strength and endurance, too.

No matter what kind of shape you think you’re in, training to bug out on foot and being prepared for the unique stresses it puts on your body is best accomplished practicing often with the actual gear and in the setting you’re most likely to find yourself when the SHTF.  It builds strength, endurance, flexibility, and improves your cardio and respiratory fitness.  And most importantly of all, you’ll be confident that you can stand – or run – on your own two feet.

A Few Tips for Surviving a Blizzard in a Stranded Car

snowed in carWhen Winter Storm Jonas rolled into the East Coast, everyone knew it was coming, but that didn’t prevent some people from getting caught in the cold. For instance, 500 vehicles on a Pennsylvania turnpike got stuck in traffic during the storm, after several trailer trucks jackknifed on the road. It took 24 hours to clear the turnpike before stranded passengers could go on their way.

Fortunately, this wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, and National Guardsmen could still reach the drivers to deliver essential supplies. But even with their help it was no picnic, and it was still a dangerous situation for all involved. It just goes to show that when a storm is in your path, no matter where you live, you should prepare yourself and your vehicle for the possibility of being stranded in snowy weather. Obviously, the worst case scenario would involve being stranded in a remote area, where you don’t have the benefit of reaching help. Here’s a few of the most important things you should remember if that ever happens to you:

Should You Stay or Go?

Say your car malfunctions, gets stuck, or crashes in a remote area during a blizzard. If there’s nothing you can do to get the vehicle moving again, you have to make the tough decision of whether to stay in the vehicle or to leave and find help (it should go without saying that in this hypothetical scenario, you don’t have a cell phone signal). In most cases, you’ll want to err on the side of staying, unless you know for a fact that you can reach help by foot within an hour or two.

Don’t overestimate your abilities though. Nobody wants to face the possibility of staying in their car for several days or weeks, but many a stranded driver has died over the years, because they left to get help and succumbed to the elements. But before you even consider leaving the house, there’s a few things you should have stocked up in your vehicle.

Basic Supplies

There are some basic, common sense supplies you should have in the trunk or backseat and ways to prime your vehicle for bouts of cold weather. To prepare for being stranded in a vehicle, you need to think about all the things you would take if you were going camping, but minus the tent. Non-perishable food, water bottles, wool and polypro clothing, sleeping bag, hand warmers, tools, first aid kit, etc. The food you take should consist of really high calorie substances, loaded with fats, carbs, and proteins. Just make sure to keep your food and water inside a cooler to prevent them from freezing and swelling (canned foods may not be the best idea).

You’ll also want a bring portable camping stove of some kind, so you can melt snow into drinking water and warm up your food. It’s not uncommon for people to get stranded in their vehicles for more than a few days, and you may not have the space to store enough water for that time frame. Just remember that you can’t use the stove for warmth. Using stoves inside your vehicle could be very dangerous and could cause carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s best to use the camping stove outside and have hand and foot warmers to maintain body heat.

Tools and Signaling

There are a few more items you should keep in your vehicle that you probably wouldn’t take on a camping trip. In all likelihood you won’t be inside your car for every moment of the day, so rubber boots are a must. You should always have road flares on hand, but in this case, you’ll need them to signal any search and rescue teams that might be looking for you. If you keep reflective emergency triangles in your car, those would also be useful for advertising your presence. And finally, you should consider a small or collapsible shovel for digging out your tires, as well as sand or kitty litter to give them traction.

Insulation

If you decide to hunker down for the night, the first thing you’ll need to do is insulate your vehicle. If you have any newspaper, books you can tear up, or extra blankets, it would be wise to tape them to the windows. However, glass is already a decent insulator, so your highest priority should be to insulate the edges of the doors and windows, or wherever cold air might get in. You could also cut out the stuffing in the seat cushions or use the floor mats.

Alternatively, you can use the snow to your advantage. In 2012, a Swedish man survived alone in his car for two months, despite the temperature falling to -30C . Experts attributed his survival to the fact that his car was buried in snow, which created an igloo effect and kept him warm. It wouldn’t be bad idea to build up a wall of snow around the edges of the car. There is a catch however. If your car is completely walled off then nobody will see you. It would be crazy to completely bury your car, and don’t attempt this unless you have something colorful or reflective to let people know where you are.

Keeping Warm

If your engine is still running, it would be a good idea to turn it on periodically so you can build up some heat in your vehicle. If your car is properly insulated, you may only need to keep the engine idling for 15 minutes at a time, every hour or so. You’ll have to keep it up however, if you want to prevent the fuel lines from freezing over. Just remember to go outside every now and then and clear any snow out of your exhaust pipe. Failure to do so could lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.

On a final note, it’s best to avoid this kind of situation in the first place. None of us want bad weather to ruin our plans, but when a snowstorm arrives, you should really just hunker down at home and stay off the roads. Keep your vehicle in tip-top shape and make sure your gas tank is full, just in case you absolutely have to drive. Snowstorms aren’t just inconvenient. Any attempt to brave them could prove deadly.

Surviving Occupied America, Part 2

 Readers, we briefed you here in the last article in this series on the needs for the two keys to survive an occupied United States: resolve and patience.  You are an intelligent and informed readership who knows about basic fundamentals of survival and then some.  This “venue” or “arena” (the better term) is your country under occupation, either by a tyrannical dictatorship (we are in a soft dictatorship at the moment), and/or a foreign army or armies.  Ladies and Gentlemen, fasten your seatbelts.  This info is “hardball” and you will need it; you need all the tools you can acquire.

Now that CISA was passed into law and (by Ted Cruz’s admission on national television) the government is monitoring approximately 100% of all telephone calls, you will see how serious this article is.  First, let’s take care of this disclaimer:

Scenario

It is a Friday evening, and you’re on your way home from work.  Your son and daughter are making dinner for you, and you’re looking forward to the weekend.  You have about three more miles to go to reach your house in a middle-class suburban neighborhood.  Suddenly your Lexus goes dead and starts to coast on the road to a stop, just as you look out your passenger-side window: it appears to be a star, but very near, with a type of “halo” around it up above.  The star flickers out, and all of the street lights, the lights in the homes, the businesses, and cars nearby flicker out.  You realize two things: you’ve been hit by an EMP, and the dinner plans for tonight with the family will probably be postponed indefinitely.

That is how quickly it will happen when it happens.  Self-assessment and situational awareness are your first priorities.  Quickly! Let’s run through it.  Is your “go” bag in your vehicle, with enough food for three days, water for one day, a weapon, ammo, extra clothing, and all of the things we covered in previous articles?  Quickly!  Do you have good hiking boots?  Change into them now: you’re walking, because the Lexus just became a two-ton paperweight.  Commo?  Did you pack a Yaesu hand-held shortwave in Mylar layers and material to shield it from the EMP, or Motorola’s?

Better get moving.  “Red Dawn” just started…in the “open-air” theatre…and you’re in it.  Do you see how critical it is to have all of this stuff done yesterday?  Hope the kids know and rehearsed the drills…hope there is a plan of initial contact, when the event occurs.  It’s dark, with a modicum of light on the horizon…. but you see a tremendous multitude of planes coming in from the west, and what looks to be popcorn dropping from the sky.  Nope: they’re parachutes, because the airborne operation is taking place, just at the turn from dusk to nightfall.

You know the situation in the world.  The Russians and the Chinese do not play softball, and they are on a war footing at all times.  The invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968 followed after Soviet doctrine (and the military doctrine of then is currently in use by Russia now), as such:

“The strategic offensive has one alternative form.  This is sometimes known as a “Friday evening” offensive…. The operation therefore begins…. with a surprise attack by a group of Fronts against one or more countries…this operation caught the Czechs off guard – profiting by the Friday evening relaxation…after a working week.”

Such a Friday attack, as can be seen here, isn’t coincidence: it’s doctrine, and it’s intelligent doctrine.  Such was the venue for the remake of the “Red Dawn” film with the EMP accomplished right after the Friday football game.

What Do You Do?

Now what do you do?  You go home, as quickly as possible.  You will have 24-48 hours of total confusion and chaos.  Hopefully you do not live in an area that is a nuclear target.  Hopefully you have at the ready a good supply of cash, precious metals, food, and supplies in the home and the means to take them somewhere and get out of dodge.

JJ’s scenario preference is the invasion by the foreign power over that of the totalitarian governmentThe reason: a war of the totalitarians versus the people is a war of attrition that only weakens the nation overall and still leaves it ripe for conquest by a foreign power while it is in the throes of weakness.  With the invasion, you will know on sight who the enemies are and that you must engage them.

Engagement: to oppose, combat, harass, or interdict an enemy or opponent.  The mission of the U.S. Army Infantry is simple: to close with the enemy and destroy him.  Canning season is over, and that greenhouse project you planned on finishing in the Spring may have to wait indefinitely.  Congratulations!  You just stepped into the shoes of the Founding Fathers!  Now comes the time to “water the Tree of Liberty,” and Jefferson’s words will have to be kept in mind as you put into practice the words of Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox, and Rogers’ Rangers.

 Are you trained up?  Are you a part of a small group, or are you keeping it in the family?  I hope you studied those infantry tactics and small unit tactics mentioned in other articles.  You need to be fully trained up on first aid, communications, and you should be in possession of a smattering of whatever language the foreign invader speaks.

There are three big differences between a foreign invader and a totalitarian dictatorship.  Firstly, the latter is already here in the U.S. and almost “omnipresent” regarding all 50 states.  Secondly, their supplies are here, and resupply is readily available.  Third, the culture and language is not alien to the dictatorship: they have an “edge” regarding the control and understanding of their citizenry.

Under the dictatorship, all commerce will either halt completely or be completely nationalized (remember that EO that Obama signed, the Defense Preparedness Ready Resources Initiative, nationalizing everything, including human labor under his “czars,” his cabinet in time of national emergency).  Under the dictatorship all movement by the citizens will be monitored and controlled: some form of internal passport will emerge.  Under the dictatorship, all Constitutional rights will be abrogated and relegated to the pages of history.

Better learn about this stuff while there’s still time.  Here’s a great work that will elucidate many things for you: Government by Emergency,” by Dr. Gary North, Ph.D., American Bureau of Economic Research, Ft. Worth, TX, 1991.  It has it all: bartering and “black marketing,” evasion, breakdown of controls over the economy, collapse of the banks, depression, and tyranny.

How about when MRAP’s and armored assault vehicles cruise down Main Street into Happyville?  How will you deal with them?  Here’s another great work for you: “The Bridge at Andau,” by James A. Michener, 1957 (no Card Catalog Number or ISBN: sorry!  It’s out of print, but you can find it on Amazon.com if you look it up).  It is the true story of the Hungarian Revolution against the U.S.S.R. of October 23, 1957, and the civilian resistance before the Soviets crushed them.

Guerilla warfare is what this is, whether against a foreign invader or a totalitarian dictatorship.  This will take years to fix with a high price and no guarantee of victory.  Remember those two keys I gave to you last week?  Resolve and patience.  It is the only way.

Subjects for your personal study and research:

  • Black marketing/underground economies (read of occupied nations under the Third Reich during WWII)
  • Infantry and guerilla tactics (Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, and US DOD publications)
  • Special Forces manuals and literature (how to form teams, train them, and how to conduct unconventional/guerilla warfare).
  • There are other disciplines to study to help you in your “schooling,” that you can imagine but will not be mentioned here in this article, regarding firearms and tactics and their ilk.  Use your imagination.

Researchers Predict That A “Mini Ice Age” Is Coming Very Soon

A few months ago, NASA published a study showing that Antarctica is actually gaining more ice than it is losing. They made the announcement after using satellites to examine the heights of the region’s ice sheet.

The findings contradict the prevailing theory that Antarctica has actually been shrinking, however.

The paper is titled “Mass gains of the Antarctic ice sheet exceed losses” and was published in the Journal of Glaciology.

The authors of this study are from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, and the cause of this ice gain isn’t entirely known, but a number of theories are mentioned in the paper.

 

It is worth mentioning, however that NASA was blasted by dozens of their own scientists regarding their global warming stance, even though a number of the world’s top scientists have questioned just how much an impact greenhouse gases have on climate change. There are many theories as to why this is so, and one of them includes the effects of supposed global warming, but not everyone agrees. That’s a completely separate topic, however, and you can learn more about it in the articles linked at the end of this article.

When it comes to climate change, a lot of emphasis is put on human activity, and rightfully so, as our ways here need to change. Perhaps in our fervour to discover our own culpability in this shift, however, we missed a few things along the way?

What about the natural cycles of climate change Earth experiences, and has experienced? It’s a scientific fact that fluctuations in the solar cycle impact earth’s global temperature, as do other massive bodies flying in and around our solar system.

The most recent research to examine this topic comes from the National Astronomy Meeting in Wales, where Valentina Zharkova, a mathematics professor from Northumbria University (UK), presented a model that can predict what solar cycles will look like far more accurately than was previously possible.

She states that the model can predict their influence with an accuracy of 97 percent, and says it is showing that Earth is heading for a “mini ice age” in approximately fifteen years.

According to the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS):

A new model of the Sun’s solar cycle is producing unprecedentedly accurate predictions of irregularities within the Sun’s 11-year heartbeat. The model draws on dynamo effects in two layers of the Sun, one close to the surface and one deep within its convection zone.

Predictions from the model suggest that solar activity will fall by 60 per cent during the 2030s to conditions last seen during the ‘mini ice age’ that began in 1645. (source)

Zharkova and her team came up with the model using a method called “principal component analysis” of the magnetic field observations, from the Wilcox Solar Observatory in California.

Looking forward to the next few solar cycles, her model predicts that from 2030 to 2040 there will be cause for a significant reduction in solar activity, which again, will lead to a mini ice age.

According to Zharkova:

In cycle 26, the two waves exactly mirror each other – peaking at the same time but in opposite hemispheres of the Sun. Their interaction will be disruptive, or they will nearly cancel each other.

We predict that this will lead to the properties of a “Maunder minimum.” Effectively, when the waves are approximately in phase, they can show strong interaction, or resonance, and we have strong solar activity.

When they are out of phase, we have solar minimums. When there is full phase separation, we have the conditions last seen during the Maunder minimum, 370 years ago. (source)

Pretty interesting to think about it, isn’t it? With so much attention being paid to the warming of our planet, it would be quite a shocker to suddenly enter into an ice age.

7 Jobs That Are Going to Survive the Next Economic Crash

If you’ve been paying attention to the news lately, you probably noticed that the economy is making some scary moves. The stock market has been absolutely pummeled, in what is being called the worst start to a year in American history. Trillions of dollars in wealth have evaporated already. Walmart is closing hundreds of stores, Puerto Rico is facing economic collapse, and global shipping is dead in the water. And to top it all off, only a select few regions in the United States have managed to recover from the last economic crisis.

It’s safe to say that we’re about to plunge head first into another recession. And it’s about time, because recessions tend to happen every 7-8 years, so we’re a bit overdue. If you haven’t already, now is the time to start bracing yourself for this eventuality. It’s just like any other disaster. If you prepare yourself ahead of time, you stand a better chance of staying above water when everything goes to hell.

One of the many ways you can position yourself to survive and succeed before an economic calamity, is to consider what skills will be in demand when money is tight across the board. I’m not talking about a total financial collapse and the breakdown of society, where suddenly blacksmiths and cobblers are in high demand. You just have to ask yourself, which jobs are going to be available during a recession, or even a prolonged economic depression?

Given past trends, I’ve selected 7 industries that I believe are going to experience either growth or stability in the next recession. It is by no means a complete list, so feel free to share your own job ideas in the comments below.

Transportation

Specifically, truck drivers. Just because the economy slows down, doesn’t mean businesses won’t stop needing things delivered to their stores. Granted, fewer goods will be delivered during a recession, but there is and has been a really high demand for truck drivers in the United States, in both good times and bad. That’s because it’s not a desirable job, and there is an unbelievably high turnover rate. That employee turnover rate often increases during a recession because wages will drop, meaning there will be even more available jobs. It’s not pleasant work, but a job is a job and this line of work can put food on the table when times are tough.

However, it may not be wise to turn this into a long-term career. It’s very possible that self-driving cars will start taking over the roads in the near future, and automated semi trucks are already in the works. This line of work should still be available by the time the next recession arrives in another 8 years, but after that, all bets are off. Alternatively UPS/Fedex/DHL delivery jobs should be around for a while, though it’s hard to say when the act of delivering a package will be automated as well.

Renewable Energy

Anything related to renewable energy will likely continue to experience growth during a recession, for the simple fact that governments, companies, and individuals all want to save money. While there are several different kinds of renewable energy such as wind, biomass, geothermal etc, solar has been leading the pack for some time now and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Regardless of whether it’s the manufacture, transportation, marketing, or installation of solar panels and accessories, you can expect growth in this field during a recession.

Keep in mind though, that during a recession the most significant business growth in this field will be seen in commercial and government projects, rather than residential installations. While solar panels undoubtedly save money, they also have heavy up-front costs that will be easier for large organizations to afford. The same goes for other forms of renewable energy.

Sales and Marketing

It doesn’t really matter what business you work for, or even if you work for yourself, most things don’t sell themselves. And in a recession, the ability to convince other people to buy a product or service suddenly becomes a much more valuable skill. It could be a sales, merchandising, advertising, or copywriting position. If you have a knack for closing a deal or enticing new customers, you should do well in any company, or any economic climate.

Security

It’s no secret that crime rates often go up when the economy falls apart. To be fair, burglaries, murders, and robberies didn’t go up in the US during the last recession, but that usually isn’t the case. When you look throughout history, in any place in the world, you’ll usually find that all sorts of crimes become more frequent when there is less money to go around. If the crisis is so bad that otherwise successful people fail to earn enough money to feed and house themselves and their families, you can expect to see more crimes in your neighborhood.

On top of that, recessions often lead to fewer tax dollars in the coffers of the government, which means there won’t be as many police officers on the streets. Small businesses, corporations, gated communities, and even governments, will start to outsource their security needs to the private sector. Security guards are in high demand during recessions, and it doesn’t typically require very much training to enter this field. Almost anyone without a criminal record can find a job as a security guard.

And you can expect growth in this sector even during good times. The truth is, most cities in America have massive financial liabilities related to the pensions of their police forces, and they may not be able to afford them in the future. At some point within the next 20 years, you can expect to see massive police layoffs, followed by an abundance of opportunities in the private security sector.

Medical

Pretty much every job in the medical field is expected to see double-digit growth over the next decade. Granted, people avoid most non life threatening medical procedures when the economy is bad (especially dental procedures), but growth will continue in this sector regardless of the economic climate. We live in a pretty unhealthy society, which combined with our rapidly aging population, means business will be booming for a long time.

And you don’t necessarily need to be a doctor or a nurse to take advantage of it. There are plenty of jobs in the medical field that don’t require a 4 or 8 year college degree. There are EMTs, surgical technologists, phlebotomists, lab assistants, and physical therapy aides. Even security guards and janitors can make above average wages compared to their peers, in a hospital setting.

Food Production

During a recession, you obviously want a job that pertains to an industry that people simply can’t do without. Food certainly falls under that category. However, you don’t want a job related to industrial farming. That employment field has consistently shrunk over the years due to automation. The production of organic food is where it’s really at.

Whether it’s growing organic food, shipping it, marketing it, or selling it, that’s the food industry you want to be in. Organic food sales have increased year after year since 2000. There was a slowdown in sales during the last recession, but growth in that industry continued nonetheless. More and more people are seeing the benefits in eating healthier food, and many of them are willing to pay more for it, even when they don’t have as much money. Which makes sense, because who are we kidding, what good is money when you’re too sick to earn it and too frail to enjoy it?

Vice

I hate to suggest this since it’s a rather unsavory business, but our vices are real moneymakers in hard times. However, not all vices are created equal. The gambling industry for instance, took a huge hit after the last recession. Tobacco sales often take a hit as well.  The vices that do thrive in bad times, are the little things. Alcohol and junk food do particularly well. The demand for Marijuana often increases as well which, considering how many states have been legalizing that drug lately, it may be a very lucrative trade to be involved in during a recession.

Canadians Are Panicking Over Food Costs After Currency Collapse

Though the Federal Reserve insists that our inflation rate is only at around .5%, we’ve all seen the price of food, rent, healthcare, and energy skyrocket over the past 10-20 years. However, this has been a gradual shift. Canada on the other hand, has just seen the price of every day goods rise precipitously over a very short period of time.

The crash in oil prices has crippled their economic growth, and led to the decline of the Canadian dollar, as well as a predictable increase in the cost of imports like food. For those of us living in the US, this provides a really good example of what life may be like should the dollar take a plunge in the near future. Here’s what our northern neighbors have been dealing with:

It is often said that a free-floating currency acts as a shock absorber.

But when Canadians go shopping for groceries these days, they’re getting nothing but the shock—sticker shock, that is.

On Tuesday, the Canadian dollar, commonly known as the loonie, broke below 70 U.S. cents for the first time since May 1, 2003.

For America’s northern neighbor, which imports about 80 percent of the fresh fruits and vegetables its citizens consume, this entails a sharp rise in prices for these goods. With lower-income households tending to spend a larger portion of income on food, this side effect of a soft currency brings them the most acute stress.

James Price, director of Capital Markets Products at Richardson GMP, recently joked during an interview on BloombergTV Canada that “we’re going to be paying a buck a banana pretty soon.”

Canadians took to twitter this week to share their collective horror over the rising cost of food. Cucumbers are $3 each. A head of cauliflower is $8. A large container of pepper cost $19 and some Canadians are paying $16 for a single bell pepper. A container of laundry detergent is $32.

This gives us a pretty good idea what would happen in the US, even if there was a minor shock to the value of the dollar. Despite the rising cost of goods and services, our currency has been doing really well on the global stage for the past two years. I shudder to think of what will happen when our economy runs into another recession, which we are way overdue for. When it does hit, the cost of our imports will rise the most, much like they have in Canada.

So what are our main imports? Fortunately, most of our food is homegrown, but there are quite a few American food staples that are also raised abroad, such as bananas, coffee, nuts, and seafood. And even though we’re one of the world’s largest meat producers, we still import a lot of pork and beef from Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. However, that doesn’t mean homegrown food wouldn’t become more expensive as well.

Even though we’ve become one of the world’s leading oil and natural gas producers in recent years, we still import a significant amount of oil from abroad. Since our agricultural industry is heavily reliant on oil, we could expect the price of all our foods, both domestic and imported, to rise.

If you want to understand how our economy would hurt from inflation or a dollar dump, take a look a this list of America’s biggest imports. We ship in a ton of electronics, which are worth about $315 billion per year. For a high-tech society like ours, this would be crippling.

The other items that stand out in that list are healthcare related. When put together, medical equipment and pharmaceuticals amount to 6.3% of our imports. Our medical system is already the most expensive in the world, so a plunge in the dollar’s value would make that situation significantly worse.

All told, a dollar dump would be really bad. That may sound obvious, but when it happens you can expect our government and media to tell us the same thing the leaders in Canada are trying to tell their citizens. Here’s how Steven Poloz, the head of Canada’s central bank, is trying to spin this situation.

Nonetheless, Mr. Poloz insisted that the Canadian dollar, which has plunged to near 70 cents (U.S.), is helping to offset the billions in lost revenue from exports of oil and other commodities. The drop makes Canada’s non-resource exports more competitive in world markets. A lower dollar is generally beneficial to exporters because they pay for their inputs, such as labour, in Canadian dollars, while their sales are generated in the higher U.S. dollar.

This is how all central bankers talk. They could find a silver lining in any situation, even if there was blood in the streets. They’ll say the same thing in the US when the next recession hits and the dollar slips. But it won’t change the fact that everything we need for our survival will be more expensive, and the average person will be making less (or no) money.

The Whole Thing is About To Come Unhinged: 6 Ways To Prepare For the Next Collapse

collapse1Since the last great recession of 2008, economic forecasters and preppers alike have warned of the bottom dropping out of the economy. The proverbial doom prediction of “it’s not if, but when” was used for years as a call to action to get ready for a much larger economic disaster. Well folks, it seems that history is repeating itself. This week, George Soros cautioned the public of an impending economic crisis.

Speaking at an economic forum in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, he told an audience that China is struggling to find a new growth model and its currency devaluation is transferring problems to the rest of the world, according to media. He added that a return to rising interest rates was proving difficult for the developing world.

The current environment reminded him of the “crisis we had in 2008,”The Sunday Times in Sri Lanka reported on Thursday morning. “China has a major adjustment problem,” he added, according to Bloomberg. “I would say it amounts to a crisis.”

The Reality is Stark and the Consequences are Clear

For years, Mac Slavo of SHTFPlan fervently warned his readers to stock up on physical assets and to prepare. His weekly economic posts proved of economic strife, but many believed he was all hype. It seems the day is finally here and we are looking at the possibility of this crisis being more unforgiving than its predecessor.

Mac states, “All you have to do is look around. The signs are everywhere. There is an industrial recession in China, lackluster holiday sales prove there is a consumer recession in the United States, real estate is stalled and is re-collapsing and stock markets around the world are set to buckle. If you’ve yet to prepare, the time is now because the whole thing is about to come unhinged.

What is about to occur is mirroring what happened in 2008. In fact, given the many national and world events that has plagued us in the past, it seems that this looming crisis on the horizon is the perfect storm for disaster.

Mac goes on to warn us. What to expect is to expect the unexpected because uncertainty is the name of the game. We don’t know how far markets will crash, what will happen with the U.S. dollar or what will happen with geopolitical tensions; and our way of life could change literally overnight. In the last 15 years, we’ve seen what systemic breakdown does in countries like Greece, Cyprus, Venezuela and Argentina.

The lessons learned are clear – you better have supplies on hand. In Venezuela, for example, they couldn’t even get toilet paper or condoms. In Greece, people were lining up in droves to get expired food that grocery stores were throwing away, and perhaps just as significantly, access to lifesaving medicine was lost when Greek credit markets were locked up.

The reality is stark and the consequences are clear – there will be panic, confusion and violence. Are you ready for that?

If You’ve Yet to Prepare, the Time is Now

Unlike the recession of 2008, this economic beast will not be held off. There will be extensive amounts of wealth lost leading to drastic cutbacks by consumers. Moreover, you can expect massive  job loss. In 2008 and 2009, the U.S. labor market lost 8.4 million jobs, or 6.1% of all payroll employment. This was the most dramatic employment contraction (by far) of any recession since the Great Depression (Source). As well, you can anticipate food prices to increase even more than they have over the last few years. In fact, price for food has drastically risen since the last recession; and according to this chart, prices are set to steadily increase with this next crisis.

food-inflation-since-2010As Slavo points out, now is the time to invest in your future so that you can limit your exposure to this potential game changer.

  1. Get prepared. At the very least, buy food, products, and supplies in bulk to help you prepare for price inflation. If you have the means to do so, invest in 30-60 days worth of supplies so that you have everything you need. Having these on hand will help you if times become more difficult. You can use this free online series to begin creating a personal step-by-step preparedness plan for your family; or, buy the best-selling book, The Prepper’s Blueprint to use as a reference in your preparations. As well, if you can manage, get out of debt, organize your finances and find ways to free up some of your income for an emergency fund to help you create a personal safety net.
  2. Preserve wealth. Choose hard assets (dry goods, precious metals, land, livestock, skills, etc.) for long-term investments so they will hold their intrinsic value over time. Holding these types of investments will insulate you from inflation and other economic issues. Further, tying your money up in assets will help you avoid the inflating prices of food sources in the future, thus furthering your cause of self-reliant living.
  3. Invest in food. One thing analysts and financial pundits agree on is that, in general, commodities will continue to rise. When others are buying foods at inflated prices, you will be consuming your investment when it was purchased at a lower price. Using a combination of shelf stable foods, you can create a well-rounded food supply to depend on when an emergency arises. Further, these foods last a lifetime and would make sound investments for future planning. Ideally, you want to store shelf-stable foods that your family normally consumes, as well as find foods that are multi-dynamic and serve many purposes. Dry goods like rice, wheat, beans, salt, honey, and dry milk will provide you with an investment that will grow in value as prices rise, and also offer you peace of mind in case the economy further degrades.   4. Learn how to grow your own food. In a homestead environment, a person wants the land to work for them as much as possible. Invest in fruit trees, seeds, and garden supplies. If you really want these peak foods, find a way to grow them yourself. Further, if you live in a rural area, consider investing in trees and bushes that will lure wild game. The trees and bushes can provide you with added sustenance and help you stock meat in your freezer. Here is a how-to guide for creating a garden quickly.
  5. Raise your own food. Rather than paying hard-earned money at the store for eggs, poultry and dairy—raise them yourself. Chickens are very easy to care for and can provide you with meat and eggs throughout the year. Additionally, you can find substitutions for these peak foods with a little research and ingenuity. For example, rabbits would be a suitable protein replacement and can even be raised in more urban areas. Similar to chickens, they don’t require much care and with some effort can be fed from the homestead’s garden or you can grow fodder. They are also great breeders and will provide you with ample amounts of meat. These are the 10 best meat rabbit breeds. As well, for the modest price of purchasing a fishing license, you can stock your freezer with fresh-caught fish.
  6. It all adds up. Again, do what you can to pay off debts ahead of time and work to restructure your outgoing funds to lower your expenses as much as possible. Debt only enslaves you further, and finding ways to detach from the system will break those shackles. As well, look into finding additional income streams. The more income you can set aside, the better off you will be. That way, if your main income dries up, you have a fall back income and won’t have to go into default.

 We Have a Choice

This economic crisis is projected to hit much harder than the 2008 recession and will last longer. The truth of the matter is that we stand at the brink of a precipice and the choice is yours to make: you can ignore the tell-tale signs or get ready and brace yourselves for it. A Brief Summary of This Week’s Incredibly Freaky Weather

storm wikimediaIn case you didn’t notice, this week has seen some of the strangest weather in recent memory. All over the world there have been countless records broken and no shortage of unseasonable climate events. In some regions, things just seem upside down with rain, snow, and heat showing up in places where they typically aren’t seen this time of year. By themselves, each of these events appear to be nothing more than odd anomalies. When considered together however, there’s seems to be an epidemic of unusual weather.

Experts and layman alike have been blaming these events on the arrival of El Niño, though it’s not clear if that weather pattern can explain everything. If El Niño really is to blame, then we may be in for some downright freaky weather for the next few years.  Here’s what’s been reported so far:

  • The Mississippi River has seen some of the worst flooding in 25 years, between Missouri and Illinois. In some parts, there have been 3 day rainfalls of 9-11 inches, which usually only happen every 100 to 300 years. Nine levees have failed to contain the water, and at least 20 people have been killed.
  • Los Angeles, which is notorious for its perpetually sunny weather, has experienced “real weather” for the first time in years. For those of you who live in states that experience blistering cold weather in the winter, you can laugh all you want, but the weather station at the USC campus reported a low of 36 degrees on December 27th. That was a tie for the station’s all time record low, which was set in 1916. Also, California is finally getting the rain it so desperately needs. Sierra snow pack levels are 136% higher than they usually are this time of year.
  • The Dallas area experienced a tremendous tornado over the weekend that had 166mph winds. It killed 11 people and destroyed over a thousand homes and businesses. While Texas is no stranger to tornadoes, this was the first time in 15 years that an EF-4 tornado occurred on American soil in December. It’s also the furthest west that a tornado of that size has been seen in December.
  • Canada has also been hit with a storm that experts believe is related to the weather conditions in Texas. But the storm itself isn’t that strange. It’s the fact that it was the first major winter storm to hit the region this season, and it arrived a month later than usual.
  • South America is also seeing some crazy floods this week, which have been blamed on El Niño. Over 150,000 people have been displaced in Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Brazil.
  • And finally, the craziest weather in the world is happening where there aren’t any people. The same weather pattern that caused flooding and tornadoes in the US, is making its way towards the North Pole. It has brought with it, some unseasonably warm weather for the region. The temperature around the North Pole rose to 32 degrees, which is 50 degrees warmer than it would normally be this time of year.

So what do you think? Is El Niño responsible for all this wicked weather, or is there another good explanation?

How To Survive Occupied America

 Ready Nutrition Readers, this is the follow-up article for The 6 Rules for Survival article, and the “kickoff” article for a two-part series.  I was born free, and I will die free, in whatever manner comes about.  In life, sometimes we have to take chances, and keep this in mind: all of us (whether readers or authors) will eventually be labeled as “undesirables” given time.

No matter!  You need the information, and that is where this website comes in.  I take the liberty to take a moment to speak a word of praise for my editor, boss, and owner of this site, Miss Tess Pennington, a fantastic woman not afraid to stand up for what she believes in.  She took a stand by creating such a venue where you, the Readers can come and glean valuable information that can enable you to thrive in challenging times and make a difference.  She created this site where you can comment and give your valued input.  You, too, can take a stand if you wish to make it so.  This article from me to you is part of my stand.

The other part will come just as the situation that births it…as a thief without warning and a meteorite on its course to impact…suddenly it will be time to take all of the lessons learned, all of your training, and go into action.  “Execute!” as the command was given in the service.

I give you my heart, Readers, my fellow countrymen: we will eventually face a totalitarian dictatorship cracking the whip of slavery on the pretext of martial law, and/or a foreign invader on our shores.  Just as in the movie with Mel Gibson “The Patriot,” these will be battles not fought in distant lands, but here…in our homes, in our towns.  There are two keys to your victory to survive, and guess what?  Our survival as a nation is dependent upon your survival…as an individual!

To Survive, You Must Possess Two Qualities

There are two keys: resolve, and patience.  Remember the last article?  I mentioned the 6 rules to survival, and if you have already read it, I encourage you to refresh yourself on them continuously.  Remember what I led the list off with:

You must do things that others do not do, and you must not do what others do.

There will be times to run and hide.  There will also be times you will have to stand and fight.  I highly encourage all of you to develop teams and train accordingly.  Link up with your veterans and learn how to form cohesive teams and basic tactics.  Let’s go over some situational basics, and cover resolve.

  1. Your house has just gone up in flames and your parents were rounded up and stuffed into a panel van. You’re a 20-year-old college student, and you’re now alone.
  2. The knocks at the door at 3:00 am “morphed” into a battering ram, and your front door just went down, Dad. Your wife and two kids are up, and it appears there’s no one at the back door…crossing the lawn will take you right into the woods.
  3. The “peacekeepers” are combing your office building on the bottom floors…your office is on the fifth floor. You’re a young medical transcriptionist, a pretty, 25-year-old girl, and as you watch from your office window, many of your coworkers are being led away from the building at gunpoint by the peacekeepers…led away in handcuffs to the waiting unmarked panel vans and trucks.

What do all of these people have in common?  They are “us,” American citizens, that are faced with a sudden life-changing (and if not wise, life-ending) event: a totalitarian dictatorship in its inception, followed by round-ups of “dissident” citizenry.

The Importance of Resolve

Resolve: firmness of purpose; determination; decisiveness.

You must find the resolve to act and take a personal stand…to not go gently into that good night!  With each of these scenarios, now is the time.  The college student needs to escape and evade the roundup.  The Dad needs to take decisive action…cut his losses if he’s not prepared to fight the home invasion…and take his family out into the woods…with nothing but their lives, if necessary.  The young lady needs to find a way to go to the stairs…or a utility elevator…and go, at the moment.

 You also need resolve to continue your fight and/or flight in relation to these oppressors.

Resolve will keep you going…that grim determination that enables you to do one more repetition on the bench press…run that last lap as fast as you can…study the chapter one more time before the exam tomorrow…carry your wounded buddy when you’re exhausted just one more step, and then just one more, and one more…

Resolve.  You can forge that resolve in your mind now.  It is better to do it now than when the actual situation arises.

You’ll need everything…everything you’ve ever learned, every skill you’ve ever developed, every little piece of knowledge and training that you have amassed throughout your lifetime.  You must resolve yourself to use them, to employ them.  You must resolve yourself to hide from oppressors…to live in the woods and in the hills…to forego all creature comforts and those basics (such as running water, heat, and electricity) we take for granted.  You must have the resolve to stay free and to help others to stay free.

Patience is a Virtue

Next, you must have patience.  When it occurs, it is not the same as a hurricane…over in a day, with the effects unbearable for days and perhaps months to clean up. You will face a situation that may last for years, or for an even longer, indefinite period of time.

Study to show yourself approved, a workman worthy of his craft.  Where should you study?  In your library.  If you want a good source to show you both patience and resolve being practiced in this context, you must research works such as the personal experiences of civilians and soldiers during the Revolutionary War.  The Founding Fathers endured years of privation and deprivation, and the majority of them lost everything they owned, many losing their lives, in the pursuit of freedom.

Can we aspire to less?  You must have the patience to endure years in such a setting.  These two keys are the basics that you need to be able to start making your stand.  You must have both of them.  There are times you will have to put on a burst of speed, as a sprinter in this struggle, and there are times you must be the same as a marathon runner, running the distance on a long race where (at the outset) there is no visible finish line.  We are halfway through this race, Readers, and Part 2 will be coming shortly to bring you to the finish line of this series.  Until then, do the best that you can in all things, and stay safe.  JJ out!

Is This the Toughest Rifle Ever Made?

mosinIt’s hard to separate firearms from prepping. If you start preparing yourself for disasters and other various survival situations, inevitably you’ll have to ask yourself if you want a firearm, and if so, what type? Now, there is already a mountain of information that is available on this topic, and at the end of the day there isn’t a single firearm that is suitable for all situations. In any case, what works for one person may not be the best for you. What I mean to say is, this is a subject that could be debated endlessly if one were so inclined.

So instead of delving into the subject of what you should or shouldn’t own, which could go on forever, I’d rather offer up a single consideration. Most preppers own multiple firearms, since ultimately, these are tools we’re talking about and none of them are one-size-fits-all. So if there’s one tool I would recommend for your tool-chest, so to speak, it is the Mosin Nagant. As you’ll see, when compared to most firearms, it fits into a very unique niche.

To me, this Russian bolt-action rifle is one of coolest guns ever made. Admittedly, it is heavy, clunky, and has some very rough recoil in addition to sub-par accuracy. However, it more than makes up for these faults with two qualities. It’s very cheap, and it is arguably one of the toughest guns ever made.

The first gun I ever owned was a Mosin, and at the time they could be bought for less than a hundred dollars. Like most firearms their price has increased over the past 3 or 4 years, but you can still buy one of these rifles for around two hundred dollars. Surprisingly, military surplus ammo is still relatively cheap as well (when it’s available). It fires a 7.62x54R round that in terms of power, lies somewhere between a .308 and a 30-06.

They were first manufactured in the late 1800’s, and the Soviet Union made tens of millions of these guns (nobody seems to know the precise number), as well as countless rounds for their vast conscript army. So despite the massive surge in gun sales we’ve seen in recent years, they’re still pretty cheap and will remain so for a long time. For the price of a really cheap AR-15, you could buy the gun, and probably all the ammo you’ll ever use in your lifetime.

As far as toughness and reliability goes, the Mosin is a doozy. These are obviously very important qualities for preppers, since we want weapons that can not only survive harsh conditions, but will remain functional for long periods of time without maintenance. The Mosin knocks it out of the ballpark in these regards. Gun owners like to joke about how reliable and indestructible the AK-47 is, but that gun has nothing on the Mosin.

If you don’t believe me, take a look at this torture test that was done on the Mosin. It survived conditions that would destroy pretty much any other firearm.

Earlier I mentioned that the Mosin fits into a very unique niche in any arsenal. So what is that niche? Well, most guns provide a certain peace of mind. Having one means you can protect yourself if any nasty situation comes up. The Mosin Nagant provides a different peace of mind. Owning one means that even if the world turns into a smoldering heap of rubble for several decades, you’ll still have something that can shoot.

Also consider the fact that during a disaster, you may have friends or family showing up at your door that you weren’t expecting to take care of. Buying a Mosin is a cheap way to make sure you have something simple and powerful to hand out to these people. And unlike some really cheap guns, you can rest easy knowing that you’re giving your friends a weapon that won’t jam or fail catastrophically in their hands.

As a final word of advice, the Mosin has one glaring drawback that owners often complain about. The accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. Out of the box, you’d be lucky to have a rifle that would be reliable past 200 yards. The reason for this has more to do with how these rifles were manufactured, rather than the design itself. The vast majority of them were made under war-time conditions with little quality control. Some are inexplicably accurate, while others will struggle to hit the broad side of a barn.

So if you buy a Mosin, don’t do it online. Buy it from a brick and mortar store where you can inspect the stock, bore, chamber, etc.  The ammo they used back in the day was very corrosive, as is most of the surplus ammo that is sold today. So make sure to shine a light down the barrel and look for any rust or pitting.

But even if the gun looks good, the accuracy will still be mediocre. Fortunately, there are some cheap and easy modifications that can elevate the accuracy to a reasonable level. If you do that, then you’ll have one awesome rifle that will last a lifetime

Winter Survival: 3 Ways to Survive Outdoors

 Wilderness survival in the bitter cold is not for the faint of heart. Record low temperatures following this snowstorm could create the need for emergency shelters, especially if you find yourself outdoors and fear exposure.

Your Top Priorities In a Cold Environment

Your primary concerns in such an unforgiving environment is shelter and water. You want to ensure that you can maintain your body heat. One small mistake like accidently losing  glove or eye protection can cause detrimental issues like hypothermia, frostbite and even snow blindness. In addition, the clothing layers you wear outdoors could make all the difference in the world. Proper layers insulate and prevent heat loss. In an emergency situation, you can use dry leaves as an emergency layer of insulation if you are concerned with hypothermia.

A trick that many outdoor enthusiasts use to making a shelter in cold temperatures, is having a thermal barrier to trap heat in the shelter. This one item can make all the difference in the world! Water is another top priority. Dehydration is a major risk when outdoors. Cold weather studies at the University of New Hampshire show increased risk for dehydration, a condition many associate with hot weather emergencies. “People just don’t feel as thirsty when the weather is cold,” says Robert Kenefick, UNH associate professor of kinesiology. “When they don’t feel thirsty, they don’t drink as much, and this can cause dehydration.” Moreover, excessive perspiration, heavy clothing and increased respiratory fluid loss are other factors that contribute to dehydration in cold climates. For example, when you can see your own breath, that’s actually water vapor that your body is losing. The colder the temperature and the more intense the exercise, the more vapor you lose when you breathe.

As well, you want to put careful thought into the tools you carry with you. Not only should the tools be helpful, but some should serve a double purpose of preventing hypothermia. Some other tools to consider are:

Keep These Shelter Tips in Mind

  • If you can face your shelter towards the east you will be able to prevent heat loss from prevailing winds and storms coming into your shelter.
  • Protect yourself from the elements by using branches, sticks, tarps or whatever you have available. Pine branches are great for wind-proofing your shelter and preventing heat loss from the ground.
  • Body heat can quickly escape if you do not have a ground insulator. If you can make your bedding area off the ground, you will be able to conserve more body heat. Consider pine needles, leaves, spruce boughs and/or branches, or even building up the snow around your primitive shelter.
  • Take into consideration your energy output on building the shelter versus the protection of the shelter.

OK, You Survived…but What If You Have Been Captured?

 If we are all planning for a SHTF situation, we must plan for the worst case scenario.  This begs the question of what would you do if you were captured?  Another word synonymous with that is “interred,” at the rate the regime is moving.  There are plenty of books out there about POW’s and this article will cover the basics that you need to help give you an edge.  I strongly recommend reading books by Jeremiah Denton or Col. James “Nick” Rowe, especially the latter’s “Five Years to Freedom,” an end-all be-all book chronicling his captivity by the Viet Cong during the war, both available via Amazon.com.

There are a few truisms you must understand going in (to this article, not into captivity, may God forbid it).  So many American citizens are not exposed to hardships that they are not capable of dealing with them when a disaster does occur.  Keep in mind the saying of my old First Sergeant from the 82nd Airborne Division for this article as well:

            How you train in peace is how you’ll fight in war.

The most important thing you can do is condition your mind to believe there is a possibility that you can be captured or interred.  This seems as if it’s a small task; however, it is not.  Many times in life we know about something that can happen; however, since the probability of it happening is low we “reverse-condition” our minds to not accept that (although improbable) it is not impossible.  The event surfaces, and it is so outside of our conditioned paradigm, our routine behavior that we will not truly accept it.

Secondly (and as we already introduced the concept), even if the event is accepted, a person may not have prepared for it because people just don’t prepare for the improbable.  Let’s face it, folks.  Who really saw that the country was going to be where it is right now twenty-five years ago?  Life is punctuated by “emoticons,” where a dramatic event occurs that may change everyone’s perception of things.  Time, however, has a way of dulling conscious efforts.

In this case, I ask you a question that may summarize the position/stance you need to follow: Are you going to wait until an entire division of foreign paratroopers are falling from the sky into your backyard before you prepare?  The answer (I’m sure for most of you) is a resounding “No,” because you are here, reading this site.  You are already thinking “outside of the box.”

You need to mentally prepare yourself for the possibility that you can be taken captive/interred in a camp.

Let’s go through some things to remember, first with a foreign army of occupation, and then a totalitarian dictatorship (domestic tyranny).

FOREIGN ARMY OF INVASION/OCCUPATION

  1. With your initial capture, you must give them a reason not to kill you – You’re a prisoner, and they are soldiers from a foreign land. You have to give them a reason not to lead you into a ditch.  Do you have any special skills?  Are you a doctor, or are you a professional in the sciences?  They may even be asking if you have a skilled trade for a work camp.  You better have one, or you had better improvise and make them believe you have one.

Another method:  the ½ now, ½ later routine.  This entails giving them some kind of valuables with the promise of much more if you’re released.  Once again, you better have the rest of it stashed somewhere.  Then you must give them enough, but not too much, or they will assume they have enough and they don’t care about getting any more.  This method is tricky and can backfire on you if you’re not careful.

  1. Never be in the front of the line or the back of the line – Always be the “grey man,” the one who does not stick out in the crowd.  When they take “extras” for a detail (almost always a bad detail) they usually snag the people in the front or in the back of the line.
  1. Do not look the (capturing) soldiers in the eye or take a “challenging” position – They’ll kill you, plain and simple. Are you going to be taken?  You had your chance to be Johnny J. Rambo.  Now you need to be Edmund Dantes from Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo.”  Now you need to be smart…to stay alive.  No challenges, no fights, and give them an impression: you’re a valuable American prisoner that can be used, and you’re cooperativeThat is the impression you need to make on them…to make it past the initial capture/initial screening of prisoners.

WHEN YOU’RE IN THE CAMP/DETAINED

This is where everything will come into play.  You will need to look for opportunities to escape, opportunities to find weapons, and chances to find hiding spots.  You’ll need to learn how to hustle, how to be sharp.  You need to keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut…unless you need it.

The subject is very big, so I encourage you to read.  “The Gulag Archipelago,” I & II by Alexander Solzhenitsyn, and “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch, by him as well.  The man spent a long time in the gulags of the USSR, and while “One Day..” is fictitious, only the character and storyline is…the rest is of the author’s personal experience.

Other things that will help you beforehand are linguistic skills/language(s).  Really, JJ may sound far-fetched suggesting to study some Russian or Mandarin Chinese.  But wouldn’t it be nice to know a few phrases that might single you out from the herd?  Say they need three laborers and there are 300 people there.  If you are the only one who knows basic greetings and expressions in Russian?  Well, they only need two other laborers, now.  Guess where the other 297 are going?  Language is a weapon to be used offensively or defensively.  By being skilled and having some language skills, you may be able to save your family, as a trade-off.

DOMESTIC TYRANNY/DICTATORSHIP

Once again, Solzhenitsyn is the guy to read (the aforementioned works).  Here you will not have as much leeway as with the foreigners.  These guys are going to know when you’re “blowing smoke,” so the best thing to do when captured is to win them over as you are planning an escape. The escape thing is such a great concept.  The only flaw is when they have your family.  It is then that you have to think of the trade-off and the consequences of such actions.  We will follow this article up with a subsequent one on escape.

Weapons:  Weapons that you beg, borrow, steal, or improvise will land you in the hole or worse.  You still need to acquire them or to make them.  Tin can lids, silverware, hardware, scrap metal.  Rope, nylon line, electrical cords.  Wooden dowels, branches, chair-rungs.  All of these things mentioned are your “supplies,” to make improvised knives, shivs, shanks, clubs, garrotes.  Make ‘em and stash ‘em, but find your stashing spot before you make the weapon.  Anything that can make fire (matches, lighter, flints) has weapons potential.  You’re only limited by your imagination: lack of using it.

Supplies:  You’ll always need supplies; however, you cannot escape if you cannot sustain yourself outside the camp.  Extra blankets, extra food, extra clothing, and anything that can help you is what you need.  Canned goods, a compass, a flashlight…all of these things can be acquired, if you know how to hustle.

Allies:  I guarantee you are not getting out of sing-sing alone.  There are too many eyes watching you all of the time, and guess what?  Do you have a neighbor who is a jerk?  Let’s assume the DHS picked him up with you in the neighborhood roundup in downtown Sacramento, and he’s a flaming lib. Well, what do you think that neighbor is going to do when he sees you making for the wire with a pair of bolt cutters?  He’s going to pick up his “good citizen” award from “the Peacekeepers.”  Make allies, but make sure they are for real.  Vet ‘em, because your life depends on it.

When you go in, you better have some gold or silver or other valuables that you can squirrel away or stash.  Read the true story “Papillon” by Henri Charriere about how the counterfeiter he guarded (on Devil’s Island) had a stash of cash, in a plan.  I encourage you to research the word “plan” in French prisoner-slang to find what it means.

Best advice of all: do not be taken.  If you are to be taken, however, these are a few of the things you can do to help you maximize your chances of success.  A good strategy is nothing until it is successfully executed.  Increase your chances of success, and “game” all of it in your mind, as well as train yourself and your family for the possibility.  Although it is improbable, it is not impossible, but if you want probability of success should it happen, you must believe it to be possible and prepare ahead of time.  Have a great day, and may you be successful in all that you do.

Surviving Poverty Part 1: How to Live in a Van

camper vanThere’s been a few news stories floating around over the past few weeks that have a common theme. In San Francisco, a city with some of the highest rental costs in the nation, it seems that more and more people have been choosing to live in their vehicles. That may not sound very surprising, but what is odd is that these stories don’t involve struggling low-income workers.

Instead, these people are fairly well paid tech employees. The one that’s really been making the rounds on the internet, involves a Google employee who bought a box truck and sleeps in his company’s parking lot. It’s not that he couldn’t afford to rent an apartment per say, it’s that he couldn’t stand the thought of paying so much money for a place to sleep. If he decided to rent, he’d probably be close to breaking even.

You know there’s something very wrong in this country, when an employee for one of the most profitable companies in world would rather live in a truck than pay rent. It suggests that in some parts of America, you don’t have to be poor to be homeless. Just imagine what it’s like for the folks who really are poor, of which there are many.

On any given night in America, there are over a half a million people living on the streets or in their vehicles. As you can imagine, that’s not a good place to be in your life, but it happens. If you think that this is something that might happen to you one day in the near future (and who are kidding, it could happen to anyone these days) here’s a word of advice: Don’t wait until the last-minute, hoping for that next job interview to come through as you burn through your savings. If homelessness is a real possibility in your life, it’s something that you should be preparing for, not waiting for.

The more money you have at your disposal when you decide to leave your home, the easier your life is going to be without a house. If you have no money, you’ll be living on the streets with little more than the clothes on your back. It’s better to put your savings towards a van or a truck that you can live in. Unlike living on the streets, you can actually maintain a fairly decent standard of living with very little money. Here’s a few basics that you need to know to get started.

Choosing a Vehicle

The box truck chosen by that Google employee isn’t necessarily the best vehicle for the job, nor is it the most affordable. It is roomy, but it isn’t very discreet. Our society is incredibly fearful of homeless people, and depending on where you live it may be illegal to sleep in your car (check your local municipal codes. There may be a neighboring town that allows it). You want something that flies under the radar.

Camper vans are a pretty good choice since they’re already designed for living in, but they also look the part. Anytime a camper van is parked somewhere, it could raise a few eyebrows. An ordinary cargo van with at least a 6 foot bed may be a better choice, because you can convert it to a camper van without it looking like a camper van. And unlike a box truck, nobody will notice you moving from the driver’s seat to the back when it’s time to go to bed. Try to avoid white vans since again, our culture has deemed white vans to be “creepy.”

Ideally, a reliable van will be worth at least $5,000, but obviously you may not have that kind of money. Fortunately there are plenty of really cheap vans from the 90’s on Craigslist that can get the job done for less.  Even the ones in the $1000-$2000 range still have some life in them. Just don’t plan on doing any long distance driving.

When you’re looking for a van, think of it this way. How many more miles does it have left? That cheap van may only have 10,000 miles of life before it craps out, but if you keep your lifestyle local that might last you a couple of years. That’s a lot longer than most people stay homeless. And look for taller vans over longer vans. You’ll have more storage space, and it’ll be easier to find parking in urban areas. Something with a shell top is even better.

Parking

The best place to keep your van while you sleep is probably in a Walmart parking lot. Walmart will let you park there indefinitely, (though this usually only applies to their retail outlets, not grocery stores) because they know you’ll shop there. Otherwise you can also park on residential streets, but you have to plan ahead by looking for spots that are inconspicuous.

You have to find spots that look more public than private, and your van will likely go unnoticed on a street with lots of parked cars. It’s also a good idea to change spots every other night. And while we’re on the subject of going unnoticed, you should consider getting some curtains for all of your windows too. Not only will this keep the sun out, but it will also prevent people from seeing you inside.

Preparing For The Elements

Vans are notorious for being very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter, and you shouldn’t completely rely on your vehicle’s heating/AC unit (more on that in a moment). Insulating your van is a must. Most people with little money may insulate the walls, ceiling, and floor with cardboard or blankets (magnets and paracord are a good idea). Others will go the full mile and deck out their van with some combination of fiberglass, foam, and foil backed insulation.

Electricity

A good battery will be the backbone of your electrical system. You’ll have to find a deep cycle battery, because your car battery will quickly burn out if you keep charging and draining it (like using your vehicle’s AC all day when you’re not driving). You’ll probably need one with at least a 100 amp hour capacity, though you’ll have to consider how much power you’ll be using on a regular basis, and how often you’ll be able to charge it. Keep in mind that you’ll have to run AC and heating devices through this, as well as your computer and cell phone. (consider turning your smartphone into a wifi hotspot)

And remember, these batteries are super heavy, so you may need to buy several smaller ones and connect them in parallel. AGM batteries are probably your best bet since there’s no off-gassing, they last a long time, and they’re maintenance-free. After that, you’ll have to find an inverter to convert the DC batteries to AC for your electronic devices. Add the total wattage from all of your devices, and buy an inverter with a capacity that is at least 1.5 times higher.

If you have any friends that are willing to help out, you shouldn’t have any trouble charging the batteries at their house. The amount of power you’ll be using will be negligible for them, and it only takes a few hours to charge them (plus you’ll need an address for paying bills and ordering packages). Otherwise, you might want to consider mounting a solar panel on the roof.

Food and Water

Obviously, you don’t want to be eating fast food for the duration of this experience. Fortunately it’s not that difficult to prepare your own meals in a van. For starters you’ll need a really good cooler, and if it can be helped, it shouldn’t be one of those cheap plastic ones you see in the grocery store. A small Yeti Cooler will maintain a cool temperature for a really long time.

As for cooking, you should probably avoid electric stoves and microwaves. They will probably eat up your electricity at a faster rate than any other electronic device. Contrary to popular opinion, you can use those little camper stoves that run on butane or propane without coming close to asphyxiating in the tight quarters of a van. You just shouldn’t use those stoves to stay warm. Keep your cooking time to less than a half hour for each meal, leave a window cracked, and you should be fine. If you’re really paranoid you can put a carbon monoxide detector in the van, but I’m willing to bet that it will never go off.

And for water, you should probably store it in a mini water dispenser, or at least jerry-rig an ordinary container to dispense water. Just make sure it’s made of plastic and not glass, and secure it when you’re driving. And since you’re no longer connected to the grid, that means you’ll have to find water by other means. Unless you want to be seen taking a large jug to a public water fountain, just go to the grocery store. Most grocery stores have a water dispenser of some kind, and it usually costs far less than bottled water.

Bathroom Business

This is probably the most controversial subject for van living, and for good reason. Dealing with your waste while living in a van sounds really unsanitary. You could set up a composting toilet and pee in bottles, but depending on your situation it may be best to simply rely on public facilities. If you want something that is more reliable though, you should sign up for a 24 hour gym. Depending on where you live it’ll cost you anywhere between $30 and over $100 a month. It’s probably worth it though, since that will be the best place for you to take a shower and shave as well. Overall, it will make your van living experience a lot easier (and cleaner).

Security

Though van living may sound incredibly dangerous since you’re not in the comfort of your home, it’s not as bad as it sounds. People who break into cars generally aren’t the kinds of people who are looking for a fight. If they were, they’d be breaking into houses, mugging tourists, or robbing banks. They’re looking for something easy, and if they know somebody is inside they’re probably going to run.

However, it’s still a good idea to have something you can protect yourself with like a bat, knife, tire iron, or heavy flashlight. Keeping a firearm at the ready in a vehicle is not recommended for legal reasons, though I’m sure the laws vary from state to state. Even where it is legal though, it’s going to be frowned upon by most cops you come across since society really doesn’t trust homeless people. And rest assured, this lifestyle will attract the attention of the law from time to time.

 

So there you have it. Those are a few of the basics for living in a van, though it is by no means a complete guide. Whole books have been written on the subject, and there are plenty of websites dedicated to vandwelling. If this is something that interests you, there is an abundance of research that is available, and you should take advantage of that. This isn’t something to take lightly, and you need to know what you’re doing. Hopefully now, you at least have an idea of what you’re getting into.

Frostbite: How To Survive Winter’s Unrelenting Brutality

 ReadyNutrition guys and gals, this article will focus upon our Winter First Aid measures to treat Frostbite.  We will cover first aid procedures, as well as, the ways to understand and recognize frostbite for what it is.  As this is a medical condition, keep in mind we are giving first aid parameters to deal with in a wilderness/field environment.  After you render first aid, immediately transport the patient to a doctor or a definitive healthcare treatment facility.

Frostbite

Frostbite is tissue damage sustained by prolonged or extreme exposure to cold temperatures.  The tissue in this case refers to the epidermis, or skin layers.  When the skin is exposed to temperatures of 32 degrees Fahrenheit or below, the vessels next to the skin surface begin to shrink and constrict.  This causes shunting, a condition where the blood is whisked away from limbs and other parts of the body away from the thoracic cavity, or chest.

Shunting is a necessary survival response to the cold.  You may have seen episodes of shunting when, for example, someone’s car plunges into an icy river or body of water.  The person may be lying unconscious in the water for almost an hour, yet they live.  This is called the mammalian dive reflex, and is a type of shunting.  The body (to preserve itself and survive) removes the blood from the extremities and sends it to the core (heart, lungs, and thorax).

In this manner with frostbite, the body (and sort of “mistakenly” so) wishes to protect from the cold in a survival response: the body is willing to sacrifice the extremity to ensure the survival of the individual as a whole.  The loss/transfer of blood from these extremities (especially the limbs and the feet and hands) causes the freezing and eventual necrosis (tissue death) of these areas.  Frostbite is measured in degrees, and they are as follows:

  1. First Degree Frostbite – only affects the outermost layer of the skin. It is characterized by mild pain with itching and some redness upon return of blood flow to the area.  Another name for it is frostnip.  First-degree frostbite does not usually result in any long-term damage, although the experience can lead to a long-term susceptibility to cold weather injuries and extra sensitivity for the afflicted body part/area.
  1. Second Degree Frostbite – this is a more severe form that is subsequent to first-degree frostbite. In this form, the skin may actually be frozen and assume a rigidity akin to actual ice.  After several days (1-3 in most cases) blistering can happen to the areas of the skin that were frozen.  These may turn black and rigid; however, it usually heals up completely in about a month or so.  Once again, these affected areas may hold a permanent sensitivity to cold and susceptibility to cold weather injuries.
  1. Third Degree Frostbite – This is characterized by the depth of the skin frozen, as well as structures below the skin. Such structures include muscle, veins, arteries, nerve tissue, tendons, and cartilage.  This type of frostbite is most severe and may result in the loss of limbs and structures such as hands/feet and the digits.  The greatest cause/contributing factor (in addition to the cold, naturally) is poor or compromised blood circulation to the affected area(s).  The shunting that we mentioned earlier is a big contributor, as well.

With third degree frostbite, there are blisters that become purple and then turn black.  The blisters are filled with blood, and the affected areas may need to be amputated.  Those who have health factors such as diabetes and are taking certain medications such as beta-blockers place people at high risk for this affliction.

 Treatment of Frostbite

Treatment can be effected by rewarming the afflicted body part or parts by two methods:

1) Passive Rewarming – this is accomplished by either using room temperature of a warm structure, or by body heat (the patient’s own, or another person providing first aid).  Addition of warm clothing and use of blankets are also part of this method.

2) Active Rewarming – this is where heat is directly applied to a person.  Such is accomplished after the steps to passive rewarming have been undertaken.  Immersion of the affected tissues in a water bath between 104-108 degrees Fahrenheit is the preferred method.  Such is undertaken because the more quickly the affected tissue is rewarmed, the less potential there is for a permanent cold weather injury and damages that are affected in the long-term.

As the first-line first aid provider, follow this rule: DO NOT MASSAGE OR RUB THE AFFECTED AREA!  Ice crystals can form in the tissue that has been frozen, and any kind of movement such as rubbing or other physical actions can cause the ice crystals to further damage the tissues.

Keep your patient warm.  Keep them dry and covered, and make sure their clothing is not too tight or restrictive so as to prevent circulation.  As we have covered in other articles, continuously monitor and reassess the patient!

JJ’s rule: When treating any condition, always monitor and reassess for shock.

Remember: a patient can “crash” when they have been affected by severe trauma such as a severe case of frostbite.  They have been weakened by exposure and the trauma.  “Crashing” is when their vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, etc.) take a “nose dive” and the patient slips into shock.  Shock kills!  It is an insidious enemy that can always creep up on you to ally itself with the injury.  Please remember this always.
There are many ways, as well as tools to prevent frostbite, and prevention is the number one objective you need to strive for.  Here are a few methods for you to file away: 

  1. Know your limits: know the area you are camping or hiking in and the weather patterns. Know yourself and what you can and cannot do physically.
  1. Warm clothing and footgear: Extras of both. JJ recommends at least one extra pair of boots in the backcountry and you can never have enough pairs of socks.  Good thermal underwear, gloves, gore-tex jackets, hats, scarves, and facemasks are must have’s when you are out and about.  Make sure you waterproof ’em before you pack ’em in
  1. Emergency hand and foot warmers: Those commercial “hot hands” packets, and such. For those of you who are wondering, you must read the short story, “To Build a Fire” by Jack London…you’ll never want to be without hand warmers again!  If your hands are cold/frozen, you will need to thaw them out to build a fire.
  1. Take plenty of food and water: It is very important to hydrate yourself, as you will waste a tremendous amount of water through physical exertion and your body’s response to cold. Bring high-calorie, easily digested foods that give you quick energy, such as trail mixes and chocolate bars, along with dried fruits and hard candies.
  1. Have a place to warm up in an emergency: Even if it is just a vehicle, make sure you can go into a structure that will allow you to rewarm frozen tissues and affected body parts.

Here are some steps for treating frostbite:

  1. Protect your skin from further exposure.
  2. Get out of the cold.
  3. Gradually warm frostbitten areas with warm water (never hot).
  4. Do not rub or massage frostbitten areas.
  5. Don’t walk on frostbitten toes or feet, if possible.
  6. If there is a chance the area will freeze again, don’t thaw them.

Remember with all of this that you must seek medical attention immediately.  Take them to a doctor or a hospital as quickly as possible.  Frostbite is treatable and it is best defeated by proper prevention and planning prior to your outdoor excursions.  Enjoy yourself the most by preparing yourself beforehand.  Have a great day!

 I think we can all agree that Jason Bourne is one of the greatest action characters of all time. Anyone who has taken a self-defense class channels Jason Bourne when practicing. So, how do you fight like Jason Bourne?

Adaptability: the Key to Ongoing Survival when the SHTF

 ReadyNutrition Readers, this article (because of its depth) is going to cover adaptability and ongoing survival, and it will be in two parts.  These two emboldened words are not two different topics: they are interrelated and pertain to the overall long-term survival challenges that you will face.  This article is not necessarily for the faint-hearted that just wish to either “play” survivalist, or for those who intend to pile their supplies up to the ceiling in a remote area and hope for the hordes and the wars to pass them by.

I am going to give you a phrase that you need to memorize, for starters.  Your basis for understanding this article is dependent upon the memorization and understanding of this key phrase.  Here it is:

The mission remains the same, but the situation dictates the conduct of the mission.

Seems simple enough, doesn’t it?  Read on.  This is the key to placing adaptability as the cornerstone to ongoing survival.  What is adaptability? Simply defined, adaptability is the capability that a person or people hold that enable them to meet changing conditions with changing actions (deviations) from the original plan to meet those conditions and triumph.  Adaptability is a means of winning.  You may wish to file this saying away in your mind with the first, and it applies:

Do you like football?  Understand that the game is very similar to warfare, minus the carnage that leads to death.  Football is very similar in nature to military maneuvers and small-unit tactics.  The game is played under constantly changing conditions that require strategic decisions and the execution of those plans in order to win.  The sport is extremely physical, mental, and requires teamwork and coordination of actions.

Warfare is this way, and this is the bottom line: survival in a SHTF situation needs to be viewed as a form of warfare, plain and simple.  The friendly neighbor of 10 years that you spoke with every day and had dinner with once every couple of weeks may very well be one of an armed group coming to take the supplies you have for his group/family/”team,” and take them by force.  Your closest friend today can become your greatest enemy tomorrow under grid-down, SHTF conditions.

Above all, your mission is to survive.

The mission: to survive, with your physical well-being, your family’s, and your supplies intact, now and in the future.  The challenge is ongoing.  You will face dangers from weather, from disease, manmade threats (nuclear, biological, chemical), and men (foreign invaders, governmental oppressors, gangs, and marauders), among other things too numerous to list.  You must work to resolve yourself how you will meet these challenges.

Scenario: The economy has collapsed, leading to wholesale rioting and the inculcation of martial law.  In the midst of the chaos, the Russians drop a division of airborne troops, and they parachute right into your immediate neck of the woods.  War is declared, and the U.S. is fragmented.  Law enforcement has turned in their badges and gone home to defend their own families.  More foreign troops are on the way.  There is fierce fighting between your local National Guard units and the Russians, and half of your city is on fire.  There you are with your wife and two kids, sheltering in your basement with about a month’s worth of food and water, and the fighting is starting to make its way into your subdivision/neighborhood.

“Red Dawn III” is now playing on your back doorstep, and this time it’s no movie…it’s for real.

What are your SOP’s (Standard Operating Procedures) that you and your family will follow regarding contact with enemy soldiers?  With “friendly” soldiers that will confiscate your supplies if they enter your home?  What actions are you planning on taking?  How will you divert their attentions and hide your supplies?  What methods of escape from a potential basement deathtrap have you outlined in advance, that everyone understands?  Who is able to fight and who is unable to give battle in your family?

Most people will prefer to nonchalantly “game” such scenarios in their mind with no practice, and no forethought as to just how far they are willing to go to meet the threat.

Most stay at home and watch “Jericho” over and over again, thinking that the threat will not be as bad and that it will not last that long until “normalcy” returns.  The first thing you must keep in mind to avert such thoughts is this:

No help is coming, and you and your family are on your own.

Reality is necessary to maintain between the ears.  How many times have you taken your family to the range or worked with your firearms, as individuals and as a team?  Are you prepared to take a human life when the need arises, to defend yourself and your family?  Can you adapt to the changing situation?  What happens if our own soldiers become “bad,” and want to take your supplies or “spend some time” with your wife and daughter while they’re “defending you and your family” in your basement?

You had better think of these things.  Today’s friend becomes tomorrow’s enemy.  You must set limits on what you will do and what you will not do.  Are you a single mom with two kids?  You’re about to become both a mom and a dad really quickly: you’re about to potentially become the only shield between you and your kids.  The actions you take (or fail to take) may mean the difference between life and death for you and your family.  Allow this to sink in:

What are you prepared to do?  YOU MUST KEEP AN OPEN MIND TO KEEP ALL OF YOUR OPTIONS OPEN!  Are you prepared to move your family out by hiding them in a garbage truck for camouflage?  Are you prepared to “appropriate” enemy uniforms and you (the newly conscripted “Russian soldier”) lead out your “captives” (your family) for “interrogation” (i.e. – to safety).  Better be prepared, and know a smattering of Russian to go past the checkpoints.

What are you prepared to do?  You and the family step out to the station wagon, packed with supplies, and find that a grenade has taken out the front two tires and put the blitz on the radiator.  What is your backup plan?  Quickly!  You only have a split second to decide and almost no time to act.  There’s a Snowball Truck parked at the end of your block.  Weigh your options, weigh your morals, and weigh the gravity of the situation.  This is where all of your formal and informal norms must be weighed against the need to act and act in a manner that you may have to act in order to save your family.

Can you hotwire that Snowball Truck and load it up with your gear?  Will you do that?  Will you act, or will you fail to act?

Formal and informal norms either strengthen your resolve or imprison you, plain and simple.

This article is not advocating actions that may break the precious rules and regulations that you have been so carefully conditioned to follow your entire life.  The information here is not designed to elicit action; it is designed to enable you to consider the possibilities of actions you may need to take in order to survive.

We’re talking about a mindset, here, and using your mind to make choices that you don’t normally have to make in the context of our society.  I will give you an example from Hurricane Katrina and my own personal experience.  The hospital where my wife worked (just prior to the hurricane) allowed each employee one (1) vehicle to be stored on a specific floor of the parking garage…if they were working in the hospital during the disaster.  Guess what?  My wife stashed her car, and later on I picked her up in my van that night.  The next day when we moved over to the hospital, the van was packed with supplies and goodies and we parked it on the designated floor.

Almost 90% of the garage (it had about 9 floors), and two adjacent garage-structures of the same, 9-floor size, WERE EMPTY when the hurricane hit!  Those who followed the hospital rules and left cars behind at their homes had their cars submerged under about 8-9 feet of water and ruined.  Case in point: it did not hurt anyone to break the rule, and we had two working vehicles after the hurricane had passed and the floodwaters receded.

You and your family must decide when the practical need arises to take such actions.  This article is not advocating breaking laws; it advocates critical thought and the deliberate decision making process that will enable you to reach a logical conclusion to your dilemma.  This is what adaptation entails, and it must be ongoing: last throughout the immediate problems and also carry you through until the end.  Then guess what?  Time to explain what ongoing truly means:

            It never ends: this is the best, most simple definition of ongoing.

You must always be prepared to exercise that critical thought process and take actions that are necessary to preserve yourself and your family.  In Part 2 of this series, we will more closely examine the deliberate decision making process and some personal training and preparation you can undertake that will enable you to follow this mindset and succeed.  In order to do this, you must first reevaluate yourself, your capabilities, and your strengths and weaknesses.  The evaluation must be objective and honest, and this, too, is part of adapting to meet the challenges you will face in the future.

Clausewitz (paraphrased): “No plan of action survives the first five minutes of combat completely intact.”  You must keep this one close to your heart and realize that human beings survive because they adapt to changing conditions.  This is part of your legacy as a human being and you can tap into this powerful capability that can enable you and your family to survive the worst when the SHTF.  “Tune” back in again shortly for Part 2, and have a good day while you’re doing some good….and doing it well.

How to Make the Perfect EDC Survival Kit

edc survival kitWe all want to be ready for anything that life might throw at us, and truth be told, most preppers are already prepared to handle far more adversity than the average person. However, that’s only true when we’re in the comfort of our own homes, surrounded by the tools and supplies that can make life easier in any situation.

But what happens when you leave the house? Obviously, you can’t take everything with you when you go for a hike or take a trip. Think about every treacherous scenario that you’ve prepared yourself for, and try to imagine what it would be like endure it with only the tools that you can carry. Not so easy is it?

This is why you have to be very savvy about putting your EDC (every day carry) kit together. This kit should include everything that you can easily carry on your person in most situations, and it should be tailor-made for your needs and your environment. Don’t mistake it for what you would take with you if you were going backpacking or camping for the weekend. An EDC is what you can carry when you’re commuting or taking a day trip out-of-town, or perhaps even going to the grocery store.

There’s a very good reason for this distinction. Technically you could take a large backpack with a camping stove, tent, and sleeping bag with you everywhere you go, but would you?

Of course not. That’s why your EDC needs to be super light and convenient. If it’s not a burden to carry in everyday situations, then you’ll actually get in the habit carrying it in everyday situations.

So when you’re thinking about what items should go into your EDC, consider three factors: It should be small, it should light, and ideally it should be versatile. That’s really the key to a great survival kit. It should be filled with items that serve multiple purposes without taking up too much space.

For example, you could carry a Mylar blanket, which doesn’t just keep you warm when the chips are down. It can actually be used for 8 different survival applications. Another great example that is fairly new to the market, is the SOG credit card blade. Not only is there a 2-inch serrated steel blade, but it also comes with tweezers, a toothpick, can opener and compass. The best part is that it’s only the size of a credit card so it can easily fit in your wallet.

Of course, there are numerous items you could include in your EDC, so let’s start with a few that could fit in your pocket without any problems:

This is by no means a complete list, but hopefully it can get you started on the right track. And if you really want to be inspired, you should take a look any of the countless altoid tin survival kits that can be found online. If you can make a kit that is that light and portable, you’ll never have a reason to not take your EDC everywhere you go. And that’s really the whole point of your EDC. It should be so easy to grab on your way out the door, that you don’t even have to think about it.

Too Big to Fail: El Niño Event Is Practically Guaranteed This Year

hurricaneIt seems like every couple of years, the folks at NASA or NOAA will issue a press release saying something along the lines of “this year we’ll have the big one” before adding that El Niño may be gearing up to dump devastating rains all over the Americas. The frequency of these predictions seems to have increased in recent years, largely due to the epic drought that has been drying up the Western United States as of late. The people living in these regions are praying for rain, even if it arrives in disastrous proportions, and the media is more than willing to entertain their fantasy.

This year has been no different, with climatologists predicting an El Niño weather pattern that could break records. Of course, making long-term weather forecasts is no easy task, and they’re wrong more often than they’re right. However, based on past climate trends this year looks like it might finally be the one, as climatologists admit that the odds of a devastating El Niño occurring this winter are on the rise.

An El Niño that is among the strongest on record is gaining strength in the Pacific Ocean, and climate scientists say California is likely to face a wet winter.

“There’s no longer a possibility that El Niño wimps out at this point. It’s too big to fail,” said Bill Patzert, climatologist for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge.

“And the winter over North America is definitely not going to be normal,” he said.

Just three weeks ago, the National Weather Service’s Climate Prediction Center raised the odds of California getting doused with a wetter-than-average winter. Southern California now has more than a 60% chance of a wet winter, a 33% chance of a normal winter and less than a 7% chance of a dry winter.

The odds of a wet winter further north are increasing too. San Francisco has more than a 40% chance of a wet winter, 33% chance of a normal winter and less than a 27% chance of a dry winter.

With rising sea temperatures in the South Pacific, and trade winds that are weaker than normal, all signs are indicating that an unprecedented rainy season is on the horizon. For now though, it’s hard to say how bad it will be. Initial reports suggested that it would be the rainiest El Niño ever recorded, but now some scientists are predicting that it will be the second rainiest.

Whatever the case may be, it’s going to be a doozy, and likely on par with the famous El Niño of 1997. That year saw floods all across North and South America, as well as droughts and disease outbreaks in Africa. It was a global disaster that managed to inflict billions of dollars in damages and untold casualties (by the way, we’re still learning about all the shocking ways that El Niño can kill people). Time will tell if this year has a disaster of those proportions in store for us.
