After the Fall: Jason’s Tale – Book Review

Click here to view the original post.

After the Fall Jason's TaleI listen to a lot of audio books during my work day and during my commute. The ones that I like are added to the Prepper Fiction page on this site. There are a lot of books that don’t make the cut. But I added one this week written by David Nees, titled After the Fall: Jason’s Tale.

As you can guess from the title, the main character is a man named Jason. After an EMP attack he is suddenly alone in life. His wife was on a commercial airline, that most likely dropped out of the sky when the EMP hit. Living in a decent size city, things get kind of dangerous quickly. Jason helps the neighbors he can, then decides to get out of Dodge.

Being better prepared and smart about his actions, Jason is able to get out of the city and into the mountains. Everything was going well until he literally fell down the mountain. Battered up pretty badly Jason has to find help and trust strangers. Luckily he finds an older couple that have farmed on their land forever. He is able to recover while helping the couple with odd jobs around the farm. Jason strikes out on his own again, but just as he starts making progress away from the farm, there are gunshots from where he just came. Suspecting the worse, Jason returns to the farm as fast as he can run. What he finds is both bloody and brutal. Life changes for him forever.

I don’t want to give away the whole story. So I’ll stop there.

After the Fall: Jason’s Tale

This was the first book that David Nees has written. But the way he slowly builds his characters and the story are like a seasoned writer. I enjoyed After the Fall: Jason’s Tale and look forward to the second one.

What is the first thing that a suburban homesteader does?  I’m sure you guessed correctly – they start a garden.  It’s probably the easiest thing to do to start a self-reliant lifestyle because of many reasons. There’s a low barrier to entry – you just need some dirt and a few seeds – and it’s

SURRENDER THE SUN

I have a vast array of interests that add flavor and color to this wonderful life of mine. A few of those happen to be the idea of apocalypse and what impact it may have on the baseline human condition, our sometimes crazy weather and it’s impacts on this incredible world, and a deep rooted love of history, especially when either of my previous two mentions are somehow involved. In her recent work Surrender The Sun, author AR Shaw has offered up a shiny bobble that I simply could not ignore. So, the real question is would it live up to my wild imaginings of where it may take me?

Annette-Shaw-1_Fotor-300x298

Full disclosure, AR Shaw is a friend, a very nice lady and I have read her work before. That is precisely the reason I want to be careful in this review to only speak to the work and my impressions of it.

Given the interests I listed above that originally secured my interests in the book, in Surrender The Sun, Shaw did not disappoint.

Want to end life as we know it?
Let’s do it.
How about a naturally occurring catastrophe?
Yes, please.
What if I told you it’s all happened before and it will happen again?
Awesome. Bring it on.

In this cataclysmic, blizzard driven romp of a story, Shaw does a wonderful job of world building. I could feel my lungs ache and burn in the frigid temperatures as I stood on the lake shore staring out as wisps of blowing snow spun out and across the body of water’s frozen surface. To further my immersion in this white-bleached, wintry wasteland, Shaw effectively weaves a sense of intimate foreboding throughout the tale as I witnessed Bishop standing like a granite mountain as he shepherds flame-haired, Maeve and her party through the seemingly never-ending storm. Both natural and man made.

In short, if you share any or all of the interests I mentioned earlier, take a chance on Surrender The Sun. The story and the world are engulfing and satisfying. The author also does a good job of touching on some of my other interests too like preparedness and just what it would feel like to realize that you cannot prepare your way out of a situation. After all, it seems that is where things would get really interesting anyway, right? There will come a point when reading this book where you will find yourself standing alongside Bishop and Maeve, each of you asking yourselves the same question. Now what?

Jump into the deep freeze and grab your copy of Surrender The Sun today. To keep up with everything going on with AR Shaw, be sure to check out her blog. You can also find her on Facebook and Twitter.

Prepper’s Armed Defense (Book Review)

Armed defense is always an interesting topic when it comes to prepping, survivalism and suburban homesteading.  At the end of the day, I strongly believe in a person’s right to stand their ground and protect themselves.  Jim Cobb shares that belief.  He has used his latest offering, Prepper’s Armed Defense, as a means of explaining

Lessons Learned from One Second After

Click here to view the original post.

One Second After by William R. Forstchen is a really scary book. Not scary like a Stephen King book, but more like a wake up call to how fragile the world we live in is. This is the book that prompted my first post, and really pushed me to start thinking of myself as a prepper or a survivalist. If you stay dependent on today’s way of life, you will die quickly when it is all taken away from you.
One Second After

This post is a review of One Second After and assumes you have read the book. If you haven’t already read One Second After, then be warned that there are a lot of spoilers in this post.

John Matherson is the main character and lives in the small college town of Black Mountain, North Carolina. One Second After deals with an unexpected electromagnetic pulse (EMP) attack on the United States and how it affects the people living after.

Here is my list of lessons learned:

  1. If you currently depend on medicine to stay alive, you will be one of the first people to die. John Matherson’s daughter was a Type 1 diabetic. When the insulin was out, she died a painful sad death.
  2. The elderly that depend on others to take care of them will also die quickly. People forget about taking care of others when it is a struggle to take care of themselves.
  3. Back up generators are useless when they’re taken out by an EMP. None of the important generators in the town of Black Mountain worked after the EMP. The hospital and the nursing home specifically. If they had worked, many lives would have been saved. The town would have been more prepared before they ran out of fuel.
  4. Tend to any kind of open wound immediately. The small cut on Matherson’s hand almost killed him. His stubbornness to have it looked at was dumb.
  5. Old cars are more reliable than today’s modern cars. A 1950s era Studebaker, a 1964 Ford Mustang and a whole fleet of old VW buses and bugs didn’t notice the EMP attack. When so much depends on computer motherboards today, it is really easy to render them useless.
  6. Don’t be afraid to be a leader when you are the most knowledgeable and experienced in the group. Someone had to take charge of the town. The major was slow to take action because nothing like this had ever happened. Matherson was hesitant to take charge of the defense of the city, even though he was the most experienced.
  7. Teach your way out of a job. When everyone around you knows what you do, you no longer have to be the one that people depend on. This is what Washington Parker did with the college kids. He taught them as much as he could as quickly as he could. When the attack from the Posse came, the town was ready and performed well even after Washington died.
  8. Learn how things were done before electricity. Have good training material for this available in something other than electronic format. Books and magazines were eventually found in the basement of the library. But having this ready from the beginning would have been great.
  9. Having electronic versions of training material on a laptop that was in a Faraday cage would have been even better. Not a single time was a Faraday Cage mentioned in the book.
  10. Communication is really important. Having a way to talk across town would have saved lives.
  11. Why is it that in every prepper book the local first responders are screwed after an EMP? Couldn’t a fire truck or police car be hardened against an EMP?
  12. Everyone in your family needs to know how to use a gun safely. But you also have to train and practice how to protect your home. When Matherson’s home was invaded, the children were not useful. They had never trained for that situation. Gun training is not enough.
  13. Having neighbors who you know and trust is so important. Immediately after Matherson’s home was invaded, his neighbor came over to assist.
  14. It doesn’t matter how rural you are. If everyone is hunting the woods to survive, the animals will all be killed. Why didn’t they do more fishing?
  15. Working together is the only way for a group to survive. The town of Black Mountain became organized and everyone participated in the defense and food for the city.
  16. Don’t be afraid of strangers. Just make them prove themselves. They may be able to provide skills or advice to help everyone. Makala was and outsider who’s car was stalled on the highway like many others. But she was a gifted nurse who ended up running the hospital.
  17. Pets were looked at as protein. A last desperate means of feeding starving family members.

If I was the mayor of a small town and read One Second After I would:

  1. Have a room specially built onto the municipal building that would serve as a Faraday cage.
  2. Add a HAM radio for long distance communications. Also add a dozen short distance (25 mile) walkies talkies to the room.
  3. Add nightvision goggles to the room for defense.
  4. Encourage solar panels for homes in the city, stores, schools and municipal buildings.
  5. Create school and city food banks. Stock up on MREs and freeze dried food.
  6. Create a seed bank with crops that grow well in your area. Encourage people to have gardens and have free classes on gardening.
  7. Encourage and fund homesteading and Renaissance festivals. Old world skills like blacksmithing, farming without electricity, tanning hides and foraging would be valuable and it’s good to know who has these skills.
  8. Encourage chicken and rabbit raising. Have free classes on these topics too. Eggs and rabbit meat would have made a huge difference in Black Mountain.

After a massive wave of disappearances, twenty-six-year-old CIA analyst, Everett Carroll, finally believes what he’s been told about the biblical prophecy of the rapture. Global currencies have collapsed, famine and plague have claimed the lives of millions, and the world has crumbled into chaos. The cities of America have been transformed into utter death traps by anarchy and lawlessness. The only reason Everett and his girlfriend, Courtney Hayes, have survived the mayhem is because they were warned that all of these tragedies would occur by John Jones, Everett’s recently deceased boss. And what’s more, through his inside knowledge at the agency, mixed with his interpretation of the Holy Scriptures, Jones predicted that a world leader would ride in on a white horse to fix all the ills of the world. But who is this leader and what is his motivation for mandating the new identification implant and the global cashless currency?

The Days of Elijah, Book One: Apocalypse is a fast-paced thrill ride through the last days in America. Buy your copy of this end-times adventure today . . . if you can stomach the peril.

Failures of Imagination by Michael McCaul – Book Review

Click here to view the original post.

This post is by Bernie Carr, apartmentprepper.com Fifteen years ago on 9/11/01, the world as we knew it, changed for our nation.  Everyone can remember exactly where they were and what they were doing when they got the news.  Now we worry about dark and dangerous things that we previously thought could never happen in our own country.  Because no one foresaw the attacks on September 11, the 9/11 Commission Report deemed it as a “failure of imagination.” Today we […]

Indivisible: Come and Take It A Great Realistic Take On A Collapse

Indivisible: Come and Take It

Indivisible: Come and Take It

Indivisible: Come and Take It

Indivisible: Come and Take It

Troy Grice emailed me recently saying that he had just finished writing Indivisible: Come and Take It (Amazon Link). Additionally  he wanted to know if I was interested in reading it and reviewing it. Well of course! The first one Indivisible: And Justice For Some was a great read. If only I wasn’t such a slow reader.

Synopsis

The nation boils in a cauldron of economic collapse and civil war. Isolated and under siege, the president withdraws into the security of his flying bunker while attempting to implement his Amero Plan to save the union and restore order. Assistant Treasury Secretary Maiden Lane, her loyalty strained by serving two masters, finds herself in peril beyond the government’s zone of control. Jimmy Marzan is separated from his company during a firefight and rescues an orphaned boy on the desolate road leading back to his unit. And Jess Clayton defends her home and young daughter from repossession and armed looters.

The Good

I always struggle with book reviews and spoilers. I hate spoilers. Also, I hate being too vague and not actually telling you anything. The struggle is real.

The action in Indivisible: Come and Take It, is realistic. It’s not the main theme of the book though so don’t expect firefight after firefight. Troy does a great job of making the violence gritty, realistic and horrific. He does not romanticize violence and war. You almost want to turn away. You feel sorry for some of the characters killed on both sides of the struggle. Just like any war the Government and those that want to be Powerful throw away lives to support their cause.  In at least one case I felt the violence was completely justified. I would be surprised if anyone disagreed with me. When you come to a  black van you’ll know why.

Indivisible: Come and Take It  has characters with personalities. My biggest gripe in fiction is unrealistic, boring or fake characters. Nothing throws me out of a story faster than bad characters. Like an army soldier that breaks his leg and drops not a single F-Bomb. Troy’s characters are all

Troy’s characters are all unique. Not cookie cutter plot devices to move the story along. You have an emotional response to the characters in Indivisible: Come and Take It. Like Mae Lane, she’s a cunt. I hate her. Marzan is cool. He is not your typical action hero. He has flaws, he gets scared and makes mistakes. Basically, he’s human.

The Bad

Indivisible: Come and Take It had me a  little confused. I thought this might have been the third book in the series not the second. Troy wrote a book that was not in this series, Oath Keeper, in between Indivisible: Come and Take It and the first one. In my review copy at least there was no recap in the beginning. Which to be honest I usually skip. With Indivisible: Come and Take It, the story jumps ahead some time after the first one. Which further lead me to think It was the third book in the series.

Early in the book, some soldiers find a body. It is a big deal to them case this guy was important. I have no idea who he is. Maybe I forgot from the first book.  Also It just seems like there are some major plot points that happened in between books. While I enjoyed the hell out of the book but  I was confused often.

Conclusion

In conclusion Indivisible: Come and Take It is not your typical collapse novel. Much like real life the government does not just shut down in collapse. When a government is dying it will become more and more totalitarian. Your rights will diminish. While In it’s death throws the ruling regime will make every attempt to stay in power. Ultimately At the cost of lives and freedoms.

Troy shows in a realistic way what a collapse could look like. Full of government corruption.  With the bankers and politicians still in bed with each other as the country implodes.  The bankers will still show up to collect the mortgage even though the grid is down.  Definitely worth picking up and reading. I even finished it and I’m the slowest reader ever.

Behold, Darkness and Sorrow: Seven Cows, Ugly and Gaunt – Review

Click here to view the original post.

Mark Goodwin is a thorn in my side!  Mark, who owns and runs PrepperRecon and the PrepperRecon Podcast, has written another book (series) called Behold Darkness and Sorrow: Seven Cows, Ugly and Gaunt.  Like his previous books, this one is a page turner, which is the reason he is such a pain!

2016-227-Audio-book-Mark-GoodwinYou see, I don’t have the time to read books anymore, so I get his books on audio.  I work about 10 minutes from work.  So, I get about 20 minutes of this page turner a day.  It definitely isn’t enough!  So, shame on you Mark!

Kidding aside, Mark has really done another great job in book one of his new series.  I’m partial to series because I like to follow a story for a while.  Like his other books, Mark follows an End of the World type scenario.  And, as in his other books, Mark weaves a ton of preparedness and the Bible, all within a great plot with everyday characters that could resemble many average Americans.

Behold Darkness and Sorrow: Seven Cows, Ugly and Gaunt, Book 1, follows three friends who live in Savannah, Georgia.  The main character, Danny, rededicates his life to the Lord and soon after starts to have apocalyptic dreams.  His dreams warn of disaster to come in the near future, in the same way Joseph interpreted Pharaoh’s dream in the Book of Genesis.

The book isn’t only for entertainement purposes though.  Mark provides a lot of helpful preparedness advice for readers, as the main characters start to get prepared for their scary future.

During a visit to his grandmother’s, Danny’s brother-in-law gives him advice on packing a bug out bag.

“You should both put together a bug-out bag, in case you need to leave in a hurry.”

“I’m not sure what that is.” Alisa said.

Nick grinned. “It’s a bag, preferably a large backpack that won’t draw too much attention, filled with the essentials you’d need to keep you alive for seventy-two hours.”

Alisa nodded slowly. “Still not sure I know what that is.”

“Well, for starters, you know you need water to stay alive. You need a minimum of a half-gallon a day just to stay hydrated. That’s if it’s not super-hot and you’re not sweating a lot.”

Alisa looked at Nick. “So, I need to keep a gallon and a half of water in my buck-out bag?” “It’s bug out, like get out of town.

Not necessarily. You could, but a gallon weighs eight pounds, so your bag would be twelve pounds before you put anything else in it. I’d recommend keeping a half-gallon in your bag and getting a good light- weight water filter. Then, you can reuse your containers and refill them whenever you came across another water source. Streams, lakes, ponds and creeks are pretty common in this part of the country. If you lived in the desert, that would be a different story. You’d have no other choice but to keep the full three days of water in your pack.”

Danny listened closely to what Nick was saying. “How much does a good filter cost?”

“You can get a good one for under a hundred dollars. Katadyn and MSR both make high-quality portable filters.”

“Since we would be traveling together, could Alisa and I share one?”

Nick nodded. “Yes, but whichever one of you isn’t carrying the filter should at least be carrying water purification tablets. You can buy them online for five or ten bucks. Water is too important. You don’t want something to happen to one of your backpacks, then you’d both be up a creek. You also need some type of shelter. You can find a small emergency tent for around twenty-five dollars. Just make sure it weighs less than five pounds and try to find something in an earth tone color…

And the above is just a taste.  The book is filled with preparedness advice.  You might even find yourself writing down some of the advice to research a little further.

But for me, the main reason I really enjoyed this book is because Mark weaves in so much of the Bible. In fact, if you are a Christian Prepper, you might find some good Scripture and rationales for why you believe what you believe.  Or, it might even challenge you, stretch you and increase your faith.

In one scene of the book, Danny and Alisa have a discussion with Pastor Earl, the groups pastor in Savannah, Georgia.

“Pastors have also sat idly by while our country has abused our monetary system. Not that it was a sustainable system in the first place, but that’s another rabbit trail that we won’t go down tonight.  But, ancient Israel’s prosperity was directly linked to their obedience to God, throughout the Hebrew Scriptures.”

“What does that have to do with America? We’re not Israel.” Alisa put her chin on her hand and her elbow on her knee as she leaned in for the pastor’s response.

The pastor explained. “No, but in the book of Isaiah, God calls all the nations of the known world to account for their disobedience to him. Isaiah specifically has prophecies against the two major empires at the time, Babylon and Assyria. He also calls out Egypt, Cush, Moab, Damascus, and Tyre. Isaiah 34 is a blanket judgment to all nations. If God’s curses for disobedience are applicable to all nations, we might assume that his blessings for obedience could also be incurred. Does that make sense?”

Danny nodded. “Yeah, it’s a lot to take in.”

I highly recommend Behold, Darkness and Sorrow: Seven Cows, Ugly and Gaunt, Book 1.  Again, I will warn anyone who picks this book up, like Mark’s other books, this is strongly Christian based.  If you don’t want to read a whole lot of Bible thumping, don’t get this book.  But, if you are a Christian Prepper, or just a Christian, you will find this book entertaining, inspirational and encouraging.

I listen to books on audio.  I think the voice who narrates the book does a good job.  The book is also available on Kindle and Paperback.  At the time of this review, this book has over 150 reviews and is rated 4.5 stars.  If you haven’t read it, you should pick it up!

Todd

Cascadia Book Review

Click here to view the original post.

cascadia

“If you live in the Pacific Northwest, get ready to run for your life . . . In the face of a massive earthquake and tsunami in the Pacific Northwest, a respected geologist must make two gut-wrenching decisions. One could cost him his reputation, the other, his life.  Is the Northwest overdue for a huge quake and tsunami, or will the region remain safe for hundreds of years yet to come? No one knows… or does someone?” ~ Cascadia

Cascadia, a new fictional book released this year, is a story about a Dr. Rob Elwood, a geologist whose specialty is earthquakes and tsunamis. He is having nightmares of “The big one” that are way too real to disregard.

Rob’s drama becomes intertwined with others–a retired fighter pilot trying to make amends to a woman he jilted decades ago and a retiree searching for legendary buried treasure in the rugged mountains of Oregon. He also meets a mysterious woman that appears out of no where all throughout the book.

I personally enjoyed Buzz Bernards book very much. I would give it a 4 out 5 stars when it comes to fictional survival books. The book is relatively short at 226 pages, but very active once the characters are tied together. Description is one of his strong points and he really makes you feel as if you were part of the action and on a personal level with the characters.

It is obvious that Mr. Bernard puts time and effort into his research and facts all throughout the book. Throughout the book he talks about Native American folk lore and how the ancient stories passed down generation after generation help him in putting the pieces together.

While this book is fiction, it brings to light the real dangers the Pacific Northwest has to face in the future. We don’t know when but we know it is overdue. Preparing for natural disasters is very important to survival and this book lets you know just how disastrous it will be when Cascadia roars its ugly head.

Authors Bio: H. W. “Buzz” Bernard, a native Oregonian born in Eugene and raised in Portland, is a best-selling, award-winning novelist. His debut novel, Eyewall, which one reviewer called a “perfect summer beach read,” was released in May 2011 and went on to become a number-one best seller in Amazon’s Kindle Store. Before becoming a novelist, Buzz worked at The Weather Channel in Atlanta, Georgia, as a senior meteorologist for thirteen years. Prior to that, he served as a weather officer in the U.S. Air Force for over three decades. He attained the rank of colonel and his “airborne” experiences include a mission with the Air Force Reserve Hurricane Hunters, air drops over the Arctic Ocean and Turkey, and a stint as a weather officer aboard a Tactical Air Command airborne command post (C-135).

Ghost Run Day By Day Armageddon 4 Review And Giveaway

GhostRun

GhostRun

Ghost Run

This Ghost Run review almost didn’t happen. Or at least this soon. I have a love hate relationship with my spam filter. Yes it saves me from weeny pills but it catches important things too. In the case being emailed by a major publisher about the newest release of my favorite zombie series it was wrong.

Ghost Run takes part in a ravaged Southern U.S dominated by hordes of Undead. While on a supplies run the main character picks up a distress call. The possibility of a cure makes him abandon returning to safety. With no turning back he leads a one-man rescue mission. Success means hope for all of humanity. Failure means the eventual end for all and joining the ranks of the undead.

Day By Day Armageddon

Day By Day Armageddon, A series that sucked me in seven years ago. It was the first book I got on a Sony Ereader Christmas gift. The Ereader long ago died but the love of the series has not.

The books are wrote from first person perspective. With the exception of the third book you are reading the journal entries of the nameless main character. He begins to write in his journal that was a Christmas gift as the pandemic begins. For him it quickly becomes a coping mechanism. Much of the books he is alone. The journals are a stand in for a buddy to talk to and unload on.

The Good

There is so much to like in Ghost Run. I have to agree with J.L Bourne it is my favorite. About 95% of the book Kilroy (The main characters nickname) is alone. Not counting his faithful robotic dog.

You get to hear all the rambling thoughts of a man on a suicide mission through hell. You can see the lapses of sanity. The tricks of imagination playing with him. The talks with the moon. The pop culture references to a time that’s dead. The drive to suffer through it all to make the world better for his baby daughter.

Like any zombie or SHTF novel there are some survival tips in Ghost Run. Some great nuggets of info. You are not beat over the head with them though. It is not a survival manual. It’s a diary of a survivor.

If you came looking for zombie killing action this is the book for you. There is plenty of realistic zombie killing. The bayonet scenes were some of my favorite. So was the pee grenade.

The Bad?

Ghost Run is the final Day By Day Armageddon book. Probably. This is very bittersweet for me. I always hate endings. Like any good ending the future is not set. There are still a million stories to be told. More journals to be written.

The main character has both the best and worst luck in the universe. He gets beat to hell like Bruce Campbell in an Evil Dead movie. Then has amazing fortune. All extremes no middle ground. Makes for great stories. With all the bad luck you feel good when he gets a break.

My only real complaint with Ghost Run was that the ending seemed rushed. Which is almost a J.L Bourne trademark. Almost like he excitedly writes then notices he’s at the end of the page count and has to wrap up. I do the same with podcast. I felt dread when I was 15 pages from the end of Ghost Run. I was worried we would be left hanging. Or the ending would be bad and send me into a rage. The ending was satisfying. Not wrapped up nicely. It reminded me of the ending of Terminator 2. Driving down the road into an unknown future

“No fate but what we make.”

The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook (Book Review)

Click here to view the original post.

Bushcraft survival is something that a lot of folks in the prepping community have an interest in.  Most of us spend some time outdoors away from our homesteads.  Knowing how to survive if SHTF in those situations is quite important.  In his book The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook, Anthonio Akkermans walks you through the different ways to construct shelters and how each can be used appropriately given your situation.

Book Set-Up

The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook is written in a chronological manner.  That means that it starts with talking about the fundamentals of shelters and then progresses through shelters from natural materials, shelters from modern material and then store-bought shelters.  Finally, the book sums up the shelter process with a chapter on mental preparedness.  The chapters are:

Chapter 1 – Shelter Fundamentals

Shelter fundamentals is an important base of knowledge to know before you go headlong into building shelters.  This chapter is full of information on shelter knowledge – starting with clothing (your first line shelter), move onto to sleeping equipment and finishing up with information on where to build a shelter and what materials to use.  There are two “bonus” sections on how to make cord and a hammer from elements found in the backwoods.

Chapter 2 – Making Debris Shelters With Your Bare Hands

This chapter gets into the fundamentals of what it takes to use natural (backwoods) material to build shelters.  As you might imagine, different areas of the country and different seasons dictate the use of different shelters.  For that reason, the author has provided how-to knowledge on the following types of shelters:

  • Natural Shelter
  • Rock Shelter
  • Debris Hut
  • Lean-To
  • Stacked Debris Wall
  • Round Debris Wall Shelter
  • Bent Sapling Shelter
  • Subterranean Shelter
  • Snow Shelter

Additional information is provided on improvements and furnishing such as fireplaces, shelving and bedding.

Chapter 3 – DIY And Modern Material Shelters

Anthonio moves into more modern shelters which involved man-made materials.  The topics covered in this chapter include shelter bags, emergency foil blankets, bansha/tarp shelters, Scandinavian Lavvu and a ger or yurt type shelter.  Essentially, this chapter starts with “cowboy camping” situations and finishes with more permanent structures that are built to last more than a night or two.  I was most interested in this chapter due to the breadth of knowledge represented here.  My interest was probably also due to the fact that living in a permanent structure for a long duration interests me greatly.

Chapter 4 – Modern Store-Bought Shelters

All you campers will like this chapter.  In it, Anthonio talks about your basic camping gear including standard hiking tents, hammocks, bivvy bags and bell tents.  The pros and cons of each option are discussed.  In addition, there is a good amount of time spent talking about the best way to use each and how to set each up properly.  I’m an avid camper and try to spend a good amount of time sleeping outdoors.  I agreed with a lot of what was written here, but did disagree with a few minor points.  In all honesty though, my disagreements were so miniscule that they are not worth discussing.  They were more personal preference than technical disagreements.

Chapter 5 – Mental Preparedness

Anthonio wraps up The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook with a smart talk about mental preparedness when it comes to shelter.  He talks about how you should drill (or practice) any shelters you may use as trying to build them under stressful situations is nearly impossible.  In addition, he talks about ways to handle the stress involved with surviving in a shelter and how to gain confidence as you go.  Adopting the right mental attitude is key to surviving in a shelter.

Why I Liked The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook

Anthonio Akkermans takes a very large topic and boils it down to a simple presentation.  The way he systematically approaches shelter building and living is intelligent and easily digestible.  One chapter builds on the next.

The other great part about this book are the pictures.  The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook is picture heavy which makes understanding the topics presented much easier.  As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

What I Didn’t Like

There were two things about this book I didn’t like.

First, as odd as it may sound given the section above, is the pictures.  While they are plentiful, the pictures are all black and white.  Most are also quite washed out meaning they don’t have good contrast.  This fact makes them hard to read and sometimes lacking in information.  I understand that color pictures cost more during printing, but it would definitely help to better convey the quality information provided in this book.

The second thing I didn’t like about The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook was the writing.  The knowledge presented in this book was top-notch but it often read like a textbook.  That fact alone made getting through this book difficult at times.  A writing approach that was a bit lighter and more story-telling might help make this an easier read.

Overall Thoughts On The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook

I think The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook by Anthonio Akkermans is an overall interesting read.  The knowledge base is top notch and the information presented may help save your life one day.  It’s presentation, while dry at times, is successive in its presentation meaning one part builds on the previous.  While I do not necessarily think this book is a “must have” for a prepping library, I would definitely put it in the “nice to have” category.  It lends itself more to the bushcraft crowd and, for them, I would lean more towards the “must have” category.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and think you would too if you have any interest in being in the woods for any reason.

Soul Saviour Gloria Gaynor Pens Powerful Book ‘We Will Survive’

Click here to view the original post.

we will survive - Gloria Gaynor‘I Will Survive’ is one of the most powerful songs of its generation, and its message is as powerful as ever today. Tina Turner, a legend in her own right, remarked on her enduring classic “A timeless anthem empowering those reaching for positive changes in their lives”. The legendary soul singer behind the composition, Gloria Gaynor has always had the ability to galvanize hope through the medium of her music, but now, for the first time, she has compiled a list of evocative stories that will touch your heart. If you have ever loved her music and ‘I Will Survive’ in particular, this book will enlighten you with stories of people battling against their individual troubles and overcome them. Each story in the book is unique, but all have a one recurring theme throughout; they were all influenced and inspired by ‘I Will Survive’ in their singular survival stories.

The book, which contains “True stories of Encouragement, Inspiration, and the Power of Song” documents these incredible stories of perseverance throughout, but there is one in particular that shines out above the rest. Gloria’s own personal story of survival is the first and foremost story, and begins the book with an amazing level of sincerity and self-exposure. It is within her own story that you realize that her lyrics reflected her own desires and motivation so pre-eminently, and continue to do so in her performances today through the Gloria Gaynor booking agent.

One of the editors of the book, Gary Krebs, revealed why the project was such a fascinating concept, “It sounded unique enough for me to probe further, and I met with Gloria. I was struck by her personal connection to ‘I Will Survive’ and by how many people have been impacted by it thirty-five years later”. Gaynor remains a brilliant role model today and she reveals in detail how the song is a symbolic message of a mission against personal struggle which prevails after all these years.

We will survive - Gloria GaynorThe sense of common humanity through the stories is strikingly apparent. For instance, a tale of a woman who reversed her decision against committing suicide after hearing the song; those who have persevered through incest and domestic violence; a Holocaust survivor; people who had their lives in ruins due to natural disasters such as Hurricane Sandy and Hurricane Katrina and families who lost loved ones in 9/11. Each story exemplifies how the individuals found hope in the song, enabling them to keep moving forward, creating a perfect mixture of tales that capture the process of turning vulnerability into empowerment.

Quite simply, the book is excellent, with hundreds of exceptional Amazon reviews, and highlights how influential the song has been for so many people. Gloria today also lends her support to numerous charities ranging from the likes of The Rita Hayworth Gala for Alzheimers to Revlons Annual Walk for Life. Her Live concerts are a massive part of Gloria Gaynor’s essence. She has touched audiences in more than 80 countries with her electrifying performances, and is as powerful a performer as she has ever been, where she can be booked through music agency MN2S to hear her rousing renditions of her many other famous tracks today.

THE MARTIAN: Survival Thinking

The Martian

The Ultimate Survival Fiction

Book review by James C. Jones

martianAfter a while I get tired of the standard survival fiction stories with the ex-military, armed to the teeth superhero fighting of the mythical rogue military units, and roving biker gangs while traveling to their big retreat in the northwest mountains. Fun reading, but seldom much real survival thinking education there. I often find my best survival concepts in non-survival literature. I am not a big science fiction fan, but the concept of the Martian fascinated me. A man stranded alone and abandoned on Mars. Mars! No breathable air, free water, edible anything, no other humans for millions of miles. Now that’s a survival challenge. Of course our hero, Mark Watney does have some left behind food, water, shelter and oxygen, but not near enough for the hundreds of days he has to survive before there is any chance of rescue. What he does have most is knowledge, improvisation, determination and imagination. Of course there is some good luck, but plenty of bad luck to. He makes some nearly fatal mistakes. Nothing in the story relates to survival techniques usable on earth, but everything in the story relates to survival thinking. How to think is much more important than basic information in survival and in life. Watney follows every one of my “Ten Principles of Survival” outlined in my recent articles.

To review:

  • He anticipates issues and problems and has solutions in mind
  • He stays aware of what’s going on around him
  • He focuses on being there (on Mars!) now rather than dreaming about where he would like to be
  • He stays calm. Even after some huge disasters, he gets it together fast
  • He evaluates and reevaluates his situation, resources and options to make good decision
  • He does the next right thing instead of be overwhelmed by a seemingly hopeless situation.
  • He definitely takes control and owns his environment and situation. He is the Martian and ignores mission control to make his own decisions. He happens to Mars not the other way around.
  • He has what he needs. Well at least most of what he needs. He makes the rest
  • He uses what he has. Wow! This is probably the main issue of the book. He Improvises, re-purposes and invents devices to make air, food, water and even rocket fuel.
  • He does what is necessary to survive including risks, pain, boredom, and an awesome journey across the barren deserts of Mars alone.
And of course my 11th principle of survival: he never gives up.
  • He also keeps his sense of humor with all sorts of comments in his log. When he has really screwed up or Mars is trying to kill him again, he says “Okay Watney, stop whining and get back to work”. That’s how we survive!

Okay: this book review gave me an excuse to restate the principles, but it’s a great read and can help you understand how these principles apply to almost every situation. A lot of the improvising his highly technical math, chemistry and computer science. The author is a software engineer with interests in orbital mechanics and relativistic physics. Yes, a nerd. So if you want to skip that, you can wait for the movie, but the book is more fun.

The Martian by Andy Weir, 434 pages, paperback, from Broadway Books, $9.99. Movie in theaters this week.

Book Review: FOXFIRE
DJ Cooper “Surviving Dystopia

Foxfire bookI’ve been having guests on the show to talk about their books and have talked about mine but I want to talk about a favorite series of books.  The Fox Fire Books… I currently have volumes 1-6 and every time I open the pages of this wonderful walk into history I am amazed at how it came about and what it really represents.

Foxfire came about as a classroom experiment…Yep, you got it right students did this!

What strikes me right out of the gate is the dedication in the very first volume…

” This book is dedicated to the people of these mountains in the hope

that, through it, some portion of their wisdom, ingenuity and individuality

will remain long after them to touch us all.”

1-27-16 artRayConnorI have often mused on the show about things I learned from my grandmother and mother, how I could sit for hours and listen to the stories that “gramma” would tell and soak up every bit of information she would share and now do the same with my mother and share with my daughter.  It is a great circle of information and too often it is lost.

1-27-16 F1“Daily our grandparents are moving out of our lives, taking with

them, irreparably, the kind of information contained in this book.

They are taking it, not because they want to, but because they think we don’t care.”

-Excerpt from Foxfire I

There are twelve volumes in the Foxfire series of books, and these are actually a compilation of articles that were published in the Foxfire magazine beginning in 1966.  We talk about surviving dystopia on this show and the examples in these books tell of a life that the everyday way of doing things is what we nowadays might consider that “Dystopia.”

1-27-15 IMG_7226This series is close to my heart as in my writing I have a book that is taking forever to compile that is much the same, in this book I seek stories of the past to share with readers the thoughts and ponderings of the elderly.  Seeking to not lose the knowledge of our grandparents and save it for future generations to marvel at, much as I did as a wide eyed girl hanging on Gramma’s every word.

Join me as I share with you some of the favorite parts of this wonderful series that every prepper should have.  In just the first volume alone we talk about Hog dressing, building a log cabin, recipes, home remedies and more.

Aftermath A Story of Survival {review}

I picked up my iPad to read this on Kindle. I thought oh, I will read a few pages and go to bed.
HA!

I haven’t ready a good SHTF book in awhile. Dare I say I read a chapter or two and never finish it. Sad because Post Apocalyptic and Dystopian are my top 2 favorite genre’s.

I could not turn my Kindle off. No, it wasn’t broken. This book was good! Engaging. The characters are strong, the kind that makes me wonder what they are doing during the day. It’s a book, I know, but that’s how I roll.

It starts off with what looks to be an EMP in a few different locations. The main character, Jimmy Walker, figures out what the problem is pretty quickly.
He leaves work, thankfully in his still running Jeep. Decides to go home before bugging out.

He deals with a neighbor, traffic getting out of the city, gets to fly a plane, and eventually…..

You will have to read the book to find out if he made it.

This will be a great read when you have some down time over Christmas. Hurry and get it now because book two is almost here.

After The Crumble Review

After the crumble

                After the crumble

Today I review After The Crumble. A new book review James? Yes finally. I was sent after the crumble in between a move or two. It got put on the back burner. Also I was a slow reader. I fixed that. I used this book to train on some speed reading techniques. Which will help me get these reviews out much faster.

“Our future has crumbled. In the late 2020s, the grid finally flickered out for the last time, succumbing to attacks from a newly formed Resistance, fuel scarcity, and general entropy.
It is now the year 2037 and many have died, with the few that managed to escape death solely concerned with their daily survival. Gavin Collier is one of those lucky few, but survival alone isn’t enough for him anymore.”

After the crumble

The story begins with Gavin searching for a  Bichon Frise dog he heard rumors about. While the world has gone to hell he wants a fancy dog for breeding purposes. This leads to him getting into some trouble with bandits. He decides to take them on alone. He does succeed in killing them all but gets injured in the process.

He manages to make it to a small town where a doctor he knows patches him up. The doctors young and beautiful niece helps to get Gavin back to health. They quickly fall in love and pan to marry.

The story has characters relate how the crumble came. How the “Machine” became too big and unsustainable. The end was sped up with help from rebels. The rebels did eco terrorist acts and attacked the government however they could. Destroying technology, atms, power stations etc. All in an attempt to hurry the crumble.

After the crumble follows Gavin, Lea and his family through their farming and bandit fighting.

The Good

I liked the positive spin on living after a disaster. Many novels set during this time are bleak. People are just surviving. No one has dreams anymore. They just move through life. In After the crumble you see people picking up the pieces. Pursuing their dreams. Doing more than just what needs to be done to live. Laughing and loving.

A few of the characters were well developed. Gavin had a lot of personality. He had interests, pain and pride. He also dropped a lot of pop culture references. Star Wars and Conan. Many used to make points the character has. Sometimes he comes off a little preachy but so do I.

Each chapter begins with a little factoid on things leading to the crumble. I like the way they progress up to the most recent events. Many of them you may already know.

The Bad

This book had a few issues with me. Things that didn’t seem to make sense. Like after getting attacked and killing a boy Gavin starts smoking a joint. I certainly have nothing against marijuana. I do not think It wise to compromise your senses after a violent encounter with more possibly coming. Then the whole taking on an entire bandit encampment alone.

Gavin I thought was a well developed character. Some of the others though I don’t really know anything about. I didn’t feel like I got to know them.

When Gavin goes off on one of his lectures everyone just agrees with him. When I go off on lectures about breast milk, vaccines, or eating toxic shit people lose their minds. A little push back would have been realistic to me.

Some may be put off my Gavins theories on religion or of God. I don’t see how they could be offensive. The Godspark was kinda interesting. Like the kind of conversation had under the moon with maybe too many drinks.

Then there was the weird mystic stuff that crept in later in the book. To be it threw a monkey wrench in the book. Seeing auras and godspark in people. For a book grounded in the facts that could lead to the collapse to then plunge down that rabbit hole seemed odd. I like magic in my fantasy books. Here it felt out of place.

Conclusion

If you want to read a prepper book that shows doing more than just surviving. A book that has some humor and pop fiction. A little magic thrown in too. Then After the crumble might be the book for you. In fact if you really want it I’ll send you mine. I live in a tiny house I can’t keep everything I review. Be the first to send your shipping address to me James at  Survivalpunk dot com. Enjoy.

Oasis (The Last Humans) A Review

Click here to view the original post.

Book review of Oasis: The Last Humans

My name is Theo, and I’m a resident of Oasis, the last habitable area on Earth. It’s meant to be a paradise, a place where we are all content. Vulgarity, violence, insanity, and other ills are but a distant memory, and even death no longer plagues us.

I was once content too, but now I’m different. Now I hear a voice in my head, and she tells me things no imaginary friend should know. Her name is Phoe, and she is my delusion.

Or is she?

I recently received this book to review. The beginning is a little rough language wise. If cussing offends you at all don’t read it. I was warned ahead of time so I wasn’t blindsided. That said, I don’t understand why authors feel the need to add it. I also am wondering how this is YA if there is so much harsh language?

This is one of my favorite genre’s. No Zombies or enslaved people, just good old Dystopia.

Oasis is the title, but is not that at all. It is a dark place. I imagine dystopia would be.
It follows Theo and his imaginary friend, Phoe, who is AI
This book kept my interest and I just chose to ignore the language.
It is the beginning of a series and I will be following it to see what happens.

I received this book for free for my honest review.

Prepper’s Natural Medicine (Book Review)

Click here to view the original post.

Natural medicine is something you will invariably hear about as you get involved in the prepping community.  We, as a general society, have become very dependent on conventional medicine – doctors, hospitals, pharmacists, etc.  If a SHTF scenario ever happens, we’ll need to be able to take care of ourselves both from a conventional medicine standpoint and a traditional medicine, or natural medicine standpoint.  Cat Ellis’ latest offering, Prepper’s Natural Medicine, walks you through the unnecessarily intimidating world of natural medicine.

Book Set-Up

Cat has created Prepper’s Natural Medicine in a very concise, direct manner.  Each chapter listed below is presented in an intelligent chronological manner which builds on the information already presented.  The chapters in the book are:

Chapter 1 – Introduction

Cat uses this chapter to introduce herself and her background.  She also spends a significant amount of time talking about why we should use natural medicine, the benefits of using natural medicine in a SHTF scenario and, most importantly, her version of natural medicine.

Chapter 2 – Stocking The Home Apothecary

This is where Cat starts to get into the nuts and bolts of natural medicine.  She takes the time to describe all the different items you will need to start in the natural medicine movement including formula ingredients such as herbs, alcohol, vinegar, glycerin, raw honey, beeswax, propolis, mushrooms, oils and fats, bentonite clay, kaolin clay, activated charcoal, salts and essential oils.  Don’t worry – you don’t need to have all of these things to get started! Cat just does a great job of outlining everything you may need!  In addition to these ingredients, she also discusses containers and other equipment you may need to start working with natural medicine.

Chapter 3 – Basic Skills

Very simply put, this is the ‘how to’ section of the book.  Cat goes through all the different ways you can create natural medicine and walks through the general directions for the creation of each.  The methods discussed include:

  • Tisanes – Infusions and Decoctions, as well as Blending Herbs for Tisanes
  • Tinctures
  • Aceta
  • Herbal Wines
  • Glycerin and Glycerites
  • Oxymels
  • Syrups
  • Elixirs
  • Infused Honey
  • Electuaries
  • Powders
  • Pastilles
  • Poultice
  • Infused Oils (both cold and warm infusions)
  • Salves
  • Lotions and Creams

She also discusses topics such as fresh vs dried herbs as well as the effect of alcohol percentage in tinctures.

Chapter 4 – Materia Medica

“Materia Medica” is a Latin medical term for the body of collected knowledge about the therapeutic properties of any substance used for healing.  This section is the meat and potatoes part of the book.  There over sixty-five pages of information on fifty individual herbs and plants which are used in natural medicine.  Common material such as cayenne, comfrey, garlic, ginger, lemon balm, sage, thyme  and valerian are discussed as well as lesser known items such as chinese skullcap, hyssop, ma huang and sida.

Cat discusses the Parts Used, Actions, Preparations, Dose, Uses and Contraindications for each item.  The information discussed here is incredibly in-depth and useful.

Chapter 5 – Herbal First Aid Kit

As you might expect from the title, this chapter walks you through building a first aid kit which consists of natural solutions.  Cat talks about how each person’s first aid kit will differ, but she does spend some time walking through different items she recommends everyone have including ingredients required and the directions on how to construct them.  She includes natural medicine solutions for some common situations including infection, inflammation, burn care, constipation, ear aches, nausea/vomiting, sore throats, sprains, stress and wound wash (among others).

Chapter 6 – Everyday Natural Medicine

In addition, to the remedies mentioned in Chapter 5, Cat spends a significant amount of time in this chapter talking about preventative, as opposed to reactionary, natural medicine solutions.  You would use the solutions in this chapter if you have a chronic situation or know that you require a longer term solution.

Appendices & Indexes

There a multiple different tables and lists that summarize different natural medicine solutions as well as herbs that are used in different situations.  In addition, there are lots of links to external information sources.  Definitely a treasure trove of information.

Why I Liked Prepper’s Natural Medicine

Plain and simple, Cat Ellis takes a very daunting, ambiguous topic and brings it down to a simple presentation that just makes sense.  I’ve not only been able to understand her writing, but have started to implement some of her suggestions and can attest to the fact that her directions are complete.

In my opinion, that’s the best part of this book – the level of knowledge that is presented in a clear, concise manner.

What I Didn’t Like

I don’t want to be that guy, but there was not much to not like about this book.  It reads as an information book and and is definitely more of an educational tool than a theoretical or opinion-lead work.

Overall Thoughts On Prepper’s Natural Medicine

I think Prepper’s Natural Medicine by Cat Ellis is a solid addition to your long-term survival library.  The natural medicine information provided is straight-forward and no-nonsense.  In addition, the presentation is put together in a chronologically intelligent way.  You can build on the information as it is presented to you.  The book, in its non-digital form, will be a great possession to have in your survival kit.

Prepper’s Financial Guide (Book Review)

Click here to view the original post.

Financial freedom is something I often preach about here on Suburban Steader. All suburban homesteaders can benefit from being free of financial burden.  How do you get there?  There’s lots of ways to go about it.  You can get quite overwhelmed with all the different ways to get to financial independence.  Jim Cobb’s latest offering, Prepper’s Financial Guide, walks you through different topics which will lead towards financial independence.

Book Set-Up

Jim has laid out Prepper’s Financial Guide in a very concise manner as is typical with his books. Each chapter is precise and addresses both the why and how of each topic. The chapters are as follows:

Chapter 1 – What Is An Economic Collapse?

Jim spends some time talking about the definition of an economic collapse as well as describing what can cause one.  He goes into depth talking about some economic collapses in history including Germany (1921-1924), the US (1929-1940) and Argentina (1998-2002).

Chapter 2 – Debt Reduction

The first step in finding financial freedom is debt reduction. You’re halfway home if you don’t owe anyone anything .  Jim discusses topics such as authoring a budget, reducing your realistic debts (debt snowball, anyone?), managing credit cards and cutting your expenses in both soft and hard approaches.

Chapter 3 – Currency

Do you know the difference between commodity and fiat currencies? Want to understand more about exchange rates? This chapter of Prepper’s Financial Guide will set you straight.

Chapter 4 – Precious Metals And Minerals

Most preppers know that gold and silver are the mainstays in ‘prepping currency.’  Jim dives into these precious metals and others.  He also talk about minerals (diamonds, rubies, etc.) in this chapter.

Chapter 5 – Post-Collapse Barter And Trade Goods

Stocking up on vices, consumables and medical supplies is recommended in this chapter because barter items will be the ‘normal’ currency in a SHTF scenario.

Chapter 6 – Bartering Skills Instead Of Stuff

Don’t have any material possessions to trade? No worries. Jim talks about trading time and sweat of your brow in this chapter.

Chapter 7 – Safeguarding Valuables

Safes, hiding spots and caches – as you might expect – are the main topics in this chapter.

Chapter 8 – Investing In Self-Sufficiency

This chapter of Prepper’s Financial Guide is one of the longer ones.  Jim spends a lot of time explaining how the best way to survive a financial downturn is to reduce your dependence on purchasing power.  Grow a garden, raise your own livestock, learn about medicinal plants and herbs, grow your handyman skill set – these are all skills you can be doing now to reduce your financial dependence later.

Chapter 9 – Putting It All Together: The Home Of The Self-Sufficient Investor

Setting up your property to be self-sufficient and maximize your investments is a key part of being a financially free prepper.  Jim’s exploration of this topic is broad and general due to the fact that each situation will be unique.

Chapter 10 – Final Thoughts

Jim summarizes the books and gives a few parting shots of wisdom.

Prepper's Financial Guide by Jim Cobb

Why I Liked Prepper’s Financial Guide

You’ll notice that Jim doesn’t have any Earth-shattering information in his book when you compare it to most financial books. Everything he presents is rock solid advice that most anyone will provide AND he paints it in a prepper’s hue. In my opinion, there are a few things in this book that make it a quality addition to your long-term survival library:

  • Bluntness – Jim has a history of not sugar-coating anything. An economic collapse situation is going to be tough. Getting your mind wrapped around that idea and accepting it is going to be half the battle.
  • Checklists – Much like in Prepper’s Long-Term Survival Guide, Jim disperses valuable checklists in the chapters and provides a large, long barter item checklist at the end.
  • Creativeness – Jim’s approaches are not always inline with mainstream thinking.  He’s not afraid to think outside of the box and present unorthodox ideas.

What I Didn’t Like

In my opinion, an economic collapse will bring out the worst in people.  Folks will be capable of doing most anything when they are hungry, thirsty and cold.  I would have expected a bit more in the chapter about safeguarding your valuables.  I think Jim’s view is a little too utopian – although this book wasn’t intended as a prediction of social environments.  I have to say that I was a bit surprised that the “Oldest Profession In The World” didn’t come up in Chapter 6.  I wouldn’t expect Jim to promote it, but I would expect that – if you’re talking about bartering “skills” – the topic would come up.

Overall Thoughts on Prepper’s Financial Guide

I think Prepper’s Financial Guide by Jim Cobb is a solid addition to your long-term survival library.  Most of the financial information and advice provided is no different than the majority of financial books and websites out there, however, the book is written with the prepper in mind.  That last fact makes it a good read.
