Book Review: Disguise Techniques

Click here to view the original post.

Disguise Techniques is an older book, created by an actor working for the OSS, forerunner of the CIA. I expected more from the book due to its history of being a text of sorts for our spies, however it really did not give any new insights. It was an interesting read, but you could probably learn more from an acting class… This book dealt a lot with  controlling body language and how putting on a hat or taking off a jacket combined with body expression would change your appearance. In my mind any one that has watched a modern spy movie

The Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving is a great little guide to keep with your canning equipment. It makes a great gift for those new to food preservation and has lots of great (and easy) recipes for those getting started in canning. There really isn’t a lot to say about Ball Blue Book Guide to Preserving, it is rather small, but packed with information, has good illustrations, and covers what you need to know to can foods in a safe manner. This book is what I used to get started canning, While I made some mistakes when I started

I had already purchased the out of print The Making of Tools, and was impressed with the quality of the book. This book covers everything you need to know to make basic tools – chisels, pliers, screwdrivers, tempering of metals, forges, how to set up a workshop. Every year, a percentage of our food supply is contaminated by the dropping and urine of rats and mice. It’s bad enough in normal times, but it can be a disaster off the grid. Rodents also carry diseases that can affect the health of your group members at a time when modern medicine may not be available. Therefore, it makes sense to eliminate your unwanted guests!

In this video, which follows up on a previous video on rodent-proofing a home, Joe Alton MD tells you what to do if you already have an issue with rat and mice infestation. Various ways to tell that you’ve got visitors and methods to get rid of them are discussed in some detail.

One self-reliant project that I enjoy, but haven’t got around to videotaping is home sausage making. I believe that the ability to cure and store meat is a vital skill to anyone interested in producing a majority of their own food (vegans and veggies excepted). I can deal with a lot of things, but a life without bacon and sausage are just not worth dealing with (IMHO).  All preppers need to know how to How to Harvest Your Livestock and Wild Game Luckily I found this little gem. New Survival Medicine Book (Great Free PDF!)

Click here to view the original post.
Fernando,
We have corresponded slightly in the past but nothing of importance. However, I would like to draw your attention now to a new medical book put out by myself and others, basically a significantly updated version of our original book. Updated as in over 400 pages more.
The book is titled Survival and Austere Medicine: An Introduction 3rd Edition, and it is available for FREE as a pdf document. We also have planned actual printed copies which will be sold royalty-free. In other words no payment to the author team, only the printer. We make absolutely zero profit from this book.
We have one download site up and running and plans for at least 3 more. The 2nd one is due up tonight if all goes well.
Please check this out when you have a chance, and if you like it we can forward the other download sites, and information on the print edition when it is available.
This not some half-baked manual that claims to be ‘the ultimate’ on survival medicine. The authors are all experienced medical people, including doctors and nurses with real world experience outside of the hospital or clinic. The authors represent 3 continents as well. You will find material within that you will not find anywhere else.
Reasonable Rascal
.

Thank you so much RR!

This is a fantastic resource everyone should download and keep a couple copies of.

Please let us know when you have the hard copy version ready as well.

Congratulations on a great job.

Happy New Year everyone!

Also, what would be the items you’d want in a kit for a public venue where a gunman could cause multiple casualties? Nurse Amy discusses what’s in her multi-person kit specifically meant for bleeding wounds at schools, churches, workplaces, etc.,  and how it could be a lifesaver in active shooting incidents and other disaster settings.

Plus, natural remedies are important in good or bad times, but especially when modern medicines aren’t being produced, such as in survival scenarios. Joe Alton MD discusses the health benefits of cloves and why you should have some in your survival medicine cabinet.

Off grid goes to Hollywood

Hurwitz books are lessons in evading Big Brother

Living off grid isn’t just popular – it’s going mainstream.

New York Times bestselling author Gregg Hurwitz is achieving worldwide sales with his Orphan X series, which follows a spy living off the grid – and he’s currently writing the screen play for a film adaptation featuring Bradley Cooper, star of comedy franchise The Hangover.

Gregg, who has had 17 books on the New York Times bestseller list, is promoting his new one – The Nowhere Man, the second featuring the character Evan Smoak.

The first book in the series, Orphan X, introduces Smoak as a killer who was taken from an orphanage as a child and trained under secret government orders. He breaks free from the programme and vanishes off the grid to use his skills to help those unable to protect themselves.

The only way Smoak can be reached is through a technologically-protected phone number, each victim asked to pass the number along to one person in trouble. Lying low in a home base hidden behind layers of false internet connections and using sophisticated technology to insulate outside access, he creates his own rogue GSM site by using a yagi directional antenna, coaxial cable and omni stubble antenna mounted on a tripod – literally taking his devices off the grid by dodging all authentication between the base station and the cell tower. Smoak lives outside the boundaries of society with the freedom to travel at a moment’s notice.

In The Nowhere Man – Buy it on Amazon, released on February 1, Smoak goes from being the one who helps people, to needing help himself.

This is only the second time Gregg has stuck with a character for more than one book, and he said Smoak would be sticking around for a lot longer yet – he has signed with his publisher for at least five books about Smoak.

Gregg said when writing he always thought about the character’s point of view, and to get into the characters’ worlds he put himself in similar situations. This has seen him blow up cars and shoot weapons with navy seals.

“I spend more waking hours with my fictional characters then my wife and my kids,” he said.
“I’ve gone under cover in a mind-control cult. I will do whatever it is to be able to write about it effectively. If I don’t do it, I can’t write about it in a way that’s up close and personal.”

Survival Books for Your Bunker

Click here to view the original post.

survival_book_bunker_books_in_bunker_featured

survival_book_bunker_cat_books_in_caseBe honest, you probably own somewhere between a handful and a shelf-full of various survival and prepping oriented books. And you have the intention of reading them, but know that you probably won’t unless you absolutely must. My personal survival oriented book collection occupies about eleven linear feet of shelf space. While the books address many topics, they fit into about a half dozen specific genres. There are the military survival manuals, the medical and first aid tomes, those pages that address wilderness lore and primitive skills, general prepping, hunting, tracking, gardening, game preparation, food storage, a few odd tangents, and plenty of survival stories. So how to take my library on the run?

By Doc Montana, a contributing author to SHTFBlog & Survival Cache

survival_book_bunker_waterproof_caseFirst, the bunker. I chose the Pelican Storm Case iM2400 waterproof polycarbonate container. If the end of the world is more of a whimper, then this case is overkill. But if it’s more of the bang I suspect it will be, then this Pelican is just the bird for the Storm. The size is about the same as a small suitcase, and was chosen to provide some focus to the bunker, but not to limit this to a Top Ten List. Additionally, weight and size need to play a role in your decision making. If I Bug In, I have all my books, magazines, manuals, and pretty much everything else in my prepping world. But if I have head to my BOL (Bug Out Location) then I need a single, durable, waterproof package that just might contain my entire Library of Alexandria.

Importance of Purpose of Bug Out Books

survival_book_bunker_tracking_navigation_trackingLike many with a survivalist/prepper bend, I tend to accumulate books about all aspects of survival from pet first aid, to boobytraps, to gardening within a square foot, to firearm repair. But as my library increased in weight, I decided what I really needed is a Bug Out Bag Of Books or BOBOB. Or another name I use is my Survival Book Bunker or SBB. In other words, a consolidation of reading material chosen specifically for when one must take the survival literature show on the road. Bug Out Books are not about Bug Out Bags (that ship has sailed), but instead the necessary skills that might be needed in the future to survive and thrive post Bug Out.

Read Also: Prepping Advice From Books

Lately, however, I have admitted to myself that I won’t be reading many of these books cover to cover but rather just referring to them or studying their table of contents so I know the gist of the book. And instead of putting the books back on the shelf, I have decided to build a portable bunker for them when when I have to throw the Survival Book Bunker (SBB) in the back of the Bug Out Vehicle (BOV) when I head to my Bug Out Location (BOL) with my Bug Out Bag (BOB).

The books I’ve selected are not in stone. They are just the best representatives of the different categories or genres of books that I think will be mission critical in a true Bug Out situation.

Current Book Categories

survival_book_bunker_military_survival_army_sas1. Advanced strategic survival techniques: These books are the military survival books that address situations across all terrains, weather, and adversaries. They often lean towards the escape/evasion/short and long term survival from a non-apocalyptical point of view. But no matter the perspective, they are the broad-spectrum information antibiotic for survival. If you don’t have these books, you might not need the rest of the books in the bunker.

2. First Aid and Emergency Care: This category of books should need no introduction. But what it does need is a variation of complexity. For some who might use this Book Bunker, basic first aid might be a new skill. Others however, might be advanced and need guidance in surgical techniques for removing bullets and suturing wounds and cauterizing arteries. And not just for humans. Animal care might be part of your kit. I know Pet Vetting is part of mine.

3. Primitive skills and Woodlore: Books in this pile are geared towards self-reliance and off-grid life. They include topics about solid shelters, cooking, toolmaking, and pretty much anything else you might need for long-term life in the woods. There are plenty of sub-genres in this category including hunting and gathering, long-term food storage, long-term shelter building, tanning hides, making cordage, and literally basket weaving. On a side note, my particular copy of “Wilderness Living and Survival Skills” is autographed and signed by both authors. I’m not sure it will improve my chances, but everytime I see the signatures I will know I am not alone in the survival world.

survival_book_bunker_woodlore_wisdom_game_processing4. Gardening and Food Preservation: Maybe 50 or 100 years ago, a basic understanding that everyone would have is how to preserve game, salt meat, and can fruit. Not that those skills are difficult, but rather just elusive in today’s technofied world. But luckily they can be regained rather quickly with a few minutes of reading, and a few hours of doing. Gardening? Well that is another matter entirely. Gardening, like marksmanship, is a skill gained through practice and experience that is also perishable. But when it comes to food production, the stakes are a little higher to getting it right the first time.

5. X-Factor books: There is room for a few in my Survival Book Bunker for a couple tomes about boobytraps, parameter security, and a few other unmentionable topics that might provide a level of security and survival advantage beyond the suggestions in mainstream literature. And I’ll just leave it at that for now.

MIA

A few topics are missing from my Book Bunker. I might add them later, but for now I will leave them as just concerns on the horizon.

Farming and Ranching: Frankly, I would find it more likely that I would stumble across a library of books on animal husbandry than I would find a herd of cattle in need of an owner.

Blacksmithing: A couple of hundred years ago i would have worried about making my own ironworks including blades. But today I am going to reserve my Book Bunker  space for dead-on needs over imagined scarcity. In fact, for blacksmithing I would need much more gear in my BOB than just a book on how to forge metal like a hammer, anvil, bellows, and shop.

Drug chemistry: While it would be nice to grab a handful of whatever is around and formulate some broad-spectrum antibiotics, in reality the chance of cooking up some perfect drugs for your needs is pretty slim. In the end, I will leave my chemistry needs to medicinal plant guides and chicken soup for colds.

Related: Five Best DIY Toothache Remedies

hugh_glass_illustrationSurvival Stories etc.: There is an entire shelf of books that no longer have immediate relevance because, as I noted above, “That Ship Has Sailed!” These books including general preparing, how to Bug Out, what to consider with your Bug Out Vehicle, where you should put your Bug Out Location, and what you should cache in your BOL. Also of lesser consequence are lists of supplies, and the endless pile of survival stories (although there is still plenty of successful data mining to do if you have the time).

In the end, if you toss in a Bible of your persuasion and a copy of the US Constitution into your Survival Book Bunker you should be good to go. Think I missed something? Add your suggestions in the comments.

REVIEW: ‘The Road’ Is A Gripping Prepper Novel Full Of Tragedy, Struggle And Hope

A screen shot from the movie that is based on the bestseller.

I recently asked a fellow author and prepper to recommend a well-written prepper novel, and he replied without hesitation: The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. I ordered the book through my rural lending library system right away.

To say that The Road is well-written is an understatement. The book – which won a Pulitzer Prize — contains wording so artfully constructed that I had to stop and ask myself if the book in my hand was one of prose or poetry. The imagery was graceful. The emotion was moving. The words flowed like water across the smooth stones of a brook bed.

However, when I mentioned the book to others who were familiar with it, McCarthy’s beautiful writing was not what most people commented on first. They said things like “dark,” “bleak” and “scary.” Those were the words I heard most when I talked with others. I read many reviews expressing similar sentiments, and I learned that the book had been made into a movie.

Spoiler alert: If you have not read the book or seen the movie and you want to, stop reading this review right here.

The Survival Water Filter That Fits In Your POCKET!

The book follows the journey of a man and his young son struggling to survive in a post-apocalyptic world. The father has made the decision that they can no longer remain in place and that they must travel south toward the coast in search of better options.

It is possible the man might be seeking solidarity with fellow survivors, as well, but he remains highly suspicious and guarded when encountering others—and with good reason. Society has broken down into a vicious dog-eat-dog world where everyone is clinging to their own survival by a thread and nobody is trustworthy.

McCarthy tells a lean tale. He doesn’t clutter the story with extraneous details. He doesn’t even give names to the characters—just “the man” and “the boy” and the title “Papa” in conversation. We are not told of their setting, but the mention that there used to be “states” and “state roads” implies it is America. We know it is a cold and snowy season.

There are few facts given about the event itself. We know only that it happened several years prior to the first chapter. Huge clusters of civilization have been burned to the ground and survivors were few. What little is left is covered with ash so thick and pervasive that it has left almost no flora or fauna.

There was once a wife and mother, but she is gone before the book begins. The boy’s birth happened at the same time as the apocalyptic event, and readers are given to understand that the three of them somehow cobbled together a life of survival for a period of years.

We learn early on that the struggle became too much for her. She chose to end her life rather than go on in a world so hopeless. It is a heartrending scene as the couple engages in an argument, each attempting to sway the other in that awful life-and-death decision—he begs her to stay, and she begs him to go with her.

Learn The Secrets and Tricks Of The Word’s Top Survivalists!

REVIEW: ‘The Road’ Is A Gripping Prepper Novel Full Of Tragedy, Struggle And Hope The man is determined to go on living, despite the stark living conditions, ever-present danger, and vast challenges. He forges on southward, protecting himself and his son from looters, murderers, cannibals, starvation and freezing as best as he can.

The little boy is anxious and fearful—he has lived his entire life in apocalyptic conditions, has trouble imagining having friends, and tastes his first Coca-Cola while on the journey south. His mother is gone, and his father has taught him that if he ever finds himself in a situation where he knows he will be tortured—or worse—that he is to follow in her footsteps.

But in spite of being a child born into a stark world that seems to deny any existence of a higher power, there is a certain celestial sense about the boy. There are hints throughout the book of him possessing a wisdom beyond his years and a compassion too deep to have been developed in his upbringing.

I caught myself wondering whether the wife had been right. Could the trauma and suffering possibly ever pay off?

Alternately, I was angry at her. If she had stayed, I thought, their lives would be better. Less alone. Less pressure on either of them as the sole caretaker of the other. It struck me that she had chosen out of selfishness, to the detriment of those she loved. I wondered: What would I have done in her shoes?

But the man had declared that they were survivors. To him, it wasn’t just an empty word. It was the mantra upon which he based every decision, every action, every sacrifice of making sure the boy was warmer and healthier and better fed than he himself was.

In the end, the father sacrificed everything he had. He gave his all to make the best possible life for his son, never making time for his own body to recover from whatever malady had struck him, and the malady won the day.

But hopelessness does not win. In this story of tragedy where it seems that the only way out is to follow the path taken by his wife, the man chooses a different one. He chooses life for his son. Even knowing that the odds are stacked high against the boy, he chooses hope and life.

New 4-Ounce Solar Survival Lantern Never Needs Batteries!

“Goodness will find the little boy. It always has. It will again,” McCarthy tells us.

The boy sits with his father’s body for three days before a stranger comes along.  And somehow, the stranger does bring goodness. He assures the boy that he is one of the good guys and that he doesn’t eat people, helps him tend to his father’s remains, and takes him home to join his family.

The mother talks to the boy about God, but she tells him it’s alright if he talks to his father instead.

Incredibly, despite a journey of cold horror, human tenderness and warmth carry the day.

I keep the book at the back of my mind as I go about my own life. Sometimes I think about the strength and tenacity of the father, or the beauty of the son’s compassion for others. I remind myself that I’m doing the right thing by tucking away extra food and supplies for a rainy day. I ponder the implications of the evening news. Mostly, though, I feel grateful—for food, and warmth, and shelter, and community. And above all, I am grateful for hope.

Ghost Run Day By Day Armageddon 4 Review And Giveaway

GhostRun

GhostRun

Ghost Run

This Ghost Run review almost didn’t happen. Or at least this soon. I have a love hate relationship with my spam filter. Yes it saves me from weeny pills but it catches important things too. In the case being emailed by a major publisher about the newest release of my favorite zombie series it was wrong.

Ghost Run takes part in a ravaged Southern U.S dominated by hordes of Undead. While on a supplies run the main character picks up a distress call. The possibility of a cure makes him abandon returning to safety. With no turning back he leads a one-man rescue mission. Success means hope for all of humanity. Failure means the eventual end for all and joining the ranks of the undead.

Day By Day Armageddon

Day By Day Armageddon, A series that sucked me in seven years ago. It was the first book I got on a Sony Ereader Christmas gift. The Ereader long ago died but the love of the series has not.

The books are wrote from first person perspective. With the exception of the third book you are reading the journal entries of the nameless main character. He begins to write in his journal that was a Christmas gift as the pandemic begins. For him it quickly becomes a coping mechanism. Much of the books he is alone. The journals are a stand in for a buddy to talk to and unload on.

The Good

There is so much to like in Ghost Run. I have to agree with J.L Bourne it is my favorite. About 95% of the book Kilroy (The main characters nickname) is alone. Not counting his faithful robotic dog.

You get to hear all the rambling thoughts of a man on a suicide mission through hell. You can see the lapses of sanity. The tricks of imagination playing with him. The talks with the moon. The pop culture references to a time that’s dead. The drive to suffer through it all to make the world better for his baby daughter.

Like any zombie or SHTF novel there are some survival tips in Ghost Run. Some great nuggets of info. You are not beat over the head with them though. It is not a survival manual. It’s a diary of a survivor.

If you came looking for zombie killing action this is the book for you. There is plenty of realistic zombie killing. The bayonet scenes were some of my favorite. So was the pee grenade.

The Bad?

Ghost Run is the final Day By Day Armageddon book. Probably. This is very bittersweet for me. I always hate endings. Like any good ending the future is not set. There are still a million stories to be told. More journals to be written.

The main character has both the best and worst luck in the universe. He gets beat to hell like Bruce Campbell in an Evil Dead movie. Then has amazing fortune. All extremes no middle ground. Makes for great stories. With all the bad luck you feel good when he gets a break.

My only real complaint with Ghost Run was that the ending seemed rushed. Which is almost a J.L Bourne trademark. Almost like he excitedly writes then notices he’s at the end of the page count and has to wrap up. I do the same with podcast. I felt dread when I was 15 pages from the end of Ghost Run. I was worried we would be left hanging. Or the ending would be bad and send me into a rage. The ending was satisfying. Not wrapped up nicely. It reminded me of the ending of Terminator 2. Driving down the road into an unknown future

“No fate but what we make.”

Johnny Jacks: Former Green Beret & New Preparedness Author ofAbsolute Anarchy
Bobby Akart “Prepping For Tomorrow

Johnny Jacks Green Beret & AuthorOn this episode of the Prepping for Tomorrow program with Author Bobby Akart, Johnny Jacks, former Green Beret & new preparedness author, will be my special guest.

On his seventeenth birthday, Johnny Jacks enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, later transferring to the U.S. Army where he became a Special Forces soldier, a Green Beret. He completed training at the U.S. Army Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in the spring of 1966 and began a career serving on Special Forces A teams in Europe, Asia, and Central America, including a combat assignment to Special Forces A team 102, Tien Phuoc, Vietnam, 1967-1968. He became proficient in guerrilla warfare strategies and tactics, communications, intelligence gathering, and guerrilla group organization and operations.

After retiring from the Army in 1982, he worked for several government agencies over the next thirty years in significant positions involving national security and emergency preparedness program implementation and policy-making. These roles provided him with knowledge of the national security policy relating to continuity of government and continuity of operations with insight into what will take place with the senior leadership when the Schumer hits the fan and the nation falls into a state of absolute anarchy.

4-7-16 absolute-anarchy-cover-artThis combination of experience and education in off-grid, self-reliant living, guerrilla warfare, and national security policy imbued him with unique insight into today’s individual and group prepper survival needs and requirements and gave him the skills and knowledge needed to defeat organized gangs and other bad guys and assist refugees under a state of absolute anarchy.

Hence, the title of his upcoming new release, ABSOLUTE ANARCHY, an interactive study guide to surviving the coming collapse. This fantastic new prepper/survival guide includes a foreword by Dr. Joe Alton, a/k/a Dr. Bones, author of the Survival Medicine Handbook.

Johnny has created an interesting concept with Absolute Anarchy. The book will be closely tied to his website,http://AbsoluteAnarchybook.com. He suggests that his readers study the book and the suggested supplementary information found online. Participate in the practical learning exercises described in Chapter 11 of Absolute Anarchy.  You will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to become a self-reliant survivalist, fully prepared for TEOTWAWKI.

He believes many preppers are oriented toward survivalist techniques, the sort of things that Lewis and Clark, Daniel Boone, and Davy Crockett, and other pioneers used to exist on the frontier of the time. Johnny does not discuss Rambo stuff in this book, just the practical application of prepper and off-grid living techniques that will enhance your ability to exit the other side of the die-off alive and ready to reconstruct a new America as envisioned by our Founding Fathers.

Review: The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion

Click here to view the original post.

Review: The Cancer Survivor's Garden CompanionI’m a firm believer that growing your own food is good for you. And not just because it provides you with your own supply of healthy, organic food.

Studies have shown that spending time in nature is good for your overall positive well-being. And what are you doing when you’re growing your own food? That’s right. Spending time in nature. When you’re outside in the garden, you’re reconnecting with nature and ultimately reconnecting with the deepest part of yourself. Gardening is good medicine for your body, mind and soul.

Recently, I came across a video in my Facebook news feed.  In the video, landscape designer, Jenny Peterson was speaking about her new book, The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion. Jenny was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012 and through her relationship with her garden, she was able to heal her body, mind and spirit.

I’m not a cancer survivor so I won’t pretend that I know what going through a cancer diagnosis and treatment is like. But I’ve felt the healing power of nature as it relates to stress, anxiety, and depression and I’ve experienced the joy, balance and peace that can be found in the garden. So, as I watched this video, I found myself saying YES YES and YES!

I knew I had to share this book with you. (Thank you, Jenny for sending me a copy.)

The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion is divided into three sections…body, mind and spirit.

In the “body” section, there are exercise tips…garden chores that will help alleviate pain and help you to recover strength, flexibility and circulation. Readers get a peek at Jenny’s awesome new garden yoga setup. (It actually makes me want to take up yoga!! :) ) Jenny also writes about growing your own food and which food is the healthiest for treatment strength. She gives smoothie recommendations and information on herbal remedies.

In the section that covers the “mind”, Jenny shares things that helped her enjoy her garden and feel connected to nature even when she wasn’t physically able to garden. There’s a section on building a support community and ways to reach out to friends and family.

The last section in the book is about connecting with “spirit.”  I loved this section! Because although this book is specific to cancer survivors, the ideas are universal and can apply to everyone. There are tips on prayer and meditation in the garden, mantras and garden altars. Jenny also introduces readers to the Japanese concept of wabi sabi and a tea ceremony.

Throughout the book, you’ll see boxes called “Survivor Spotlights”. Each spotlight introduces you to a gardener who is a cancer survivor. You learn what their diagnosis was and how gardening helped them through it.

That is just some of what is found in The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion but what makes it really special is Jenny. I don’t know Jenny personally but through this book, I felt like I had made a new friend. Jenny shares so much of her journey and her words are comforting and supportive.

I found this sentence in the book and I think it sums up The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion the best:

This book is to encourage people who are diagnosed with cancer, going through cancer treatment, healing from cancer or living with cancer to view their gardens, plants and outdoor spaces as resources in creating the healthiest and most balanced life possible.

You can find The Cancer Survivor’s Garden Companion by Jenny Peterson on Amazon and in book stores.

Bobby Akart “Prepping For Tomorrow

Thomas A. Watson: Best Selling AuthorOn this week’s episode of the Prepping for Tomorrow program with Author Bobby Akart, Tommy Watson will be my special guest.

Thomas Watson grew up in Doyline Louisiana and Grenada Mississippi, and moved to Shreveport Louisiana to start a family. He now lives in Northwestern Montana with his adoring wife, four dogs and a cat. He graduated from Northwestern University with a Bachelor’s degree in Science.

3-24-16 patriots-rebornTommy’s love of reading, which was instilled in him at a young age by his parents, inspired him to begin his writing career in 2012 with his first bookBlue Plague: The Fall. The books in the Blue Plague series are no holds barred about the end of civilization and are not for the faint of heart. The language and actions are harsh even by the main characters. The series is pure post-apocalyptic, dystopian fiction which can only be described as eye-opening.

His most recent series, titled Forgotten Forbidden America, has thrilled fans with three releases in the last year. Tommy released Patriots Reborn last week and it still occupies a top ten spot in the political thriller rankings.

A prolific writer, Tommy Watson is one of the few political and post-apoc authors who live the preparedness lifestyle. He is also living proof that behind every good man, there is an even more gooder woman!

Doomsday Book of Medicine!
James Walton “I Am Liberty

Doomsday MedicineImagine a world without doctors, a brutal world that could exist in our near future or in the distant. For a second however envision a person you love with a life threatening injury. Are you prepared to deal with that? Are you prepared to save someone you love? No medicine and no doctors what are your options? There are a lot of great books out there about survival medicine or apocalyptic first aid. I have read some. Have you ever read one that featured so much preventative medicine? I have a gem for you on this episode of I AM Liberty. We are lucky enough to have a phenomenal guest.

3-11-16 51BaQVfC9+LOn this show we are talking to author Ralph La Guardia M.D on the show to discuss his new release The DoomsdayBook of Medicine. His book is addresses the scenario of dealing with illness and injury in the event that there are no doctors. What are you capable of? This book goes into great depth about how to become a one man healing machine. The book doesn’t only cover first aid but it expounds on great topics like vitamins and your nutrition. There is another great chapter on fermentation and fermented foods.

I was thrilled when I got my hands on this book and found it not to be that run of the mill Army training manual about how to put on a tourniquet. It’s chock full preventative medicine, which is crucial in today’s world. We are going to have a great guest that will be open to questioning. I am sure if you call in with a question he will have no problem sending a copy of this great book. Don’t miss this episode of I AM liberty where we have a solid guest like Ralph La Guardia and his book The Doomsday Book of Medicine.

Terror, Americans & Unification

Terror, Americans & Unification
James Walton “I Am Liberty

Terror, Americans & Unification KhanDelivery driver Junead Khan, 25, is said to have planned a terror attack on US soldiers outside military bases in Britain.

The prosecution said that, after his arrest last July, detectives discovered he had shared a number of images associated with Islamic State on WhatsApp.

One was of an article with the headline “Exclusive: West can’t defeat IS”, which featured an interview with Abu Rahin Aziz, also known as Abu Abdullah al-Britani.

Cross-examining at Kingston Crown Court, prosecutor Max Hill told Khan that Aziz was “a hero” to him.

EVENING STANDARD

Islamic terror is not going away anytime soon. One would argue it’s a cultural institution almost like gang culture in America. I wonder about whether that is a decision all Middle Eastern Muslim boys make in their formative years. Whether to follow in the footsteps of jihadists or continue down the path of incredible poverty.

3-3-16 41S9jYawgMLEither way as Americans we get touchy when these types of attacks happen at home or to our people. In my new book Tom Locke: Surviving America the lead character also uncovers a brutal terror plot but really by terrible luck. What ensues is his best effort to thwart that plan. It’s a ride filled with suspense and a mountaintop chase and attack against a 24 hour time window to prevent the most heinous terrorist attack ever attempted.

I am liberty 400x300The book is about action and suspense but the underlying theme is the importance for good people to live together on American soil. Tom’s only ally in this whole adventure is a Muslim man named Najair. Their arguments about religion and faith open up thoughts about us getting along as Americans.

This episode we are going to talk terror, Americans and Unification on the I AM Liberty show.

SETH TURNER: Accomplished Musician & Fellow Author
Bobby Akart “Prepping For Tomorrow

SETH TURNER -evadeOn this week’s episode of the Prepping for Tomorrow program with Author Bobby Akart, accomplished musician and fellow author from the Perseid Collapse Kindle World, SETH TURNER will be Bobby’s special guest.

I first met Seth as a fellow author in the Perseid Collapse Kindle World created by Steve Konkoly.
Like me, this was his first foray into writing. EVADE, book one in the Leaving Las Vegas series, chronicles the post-apocalyptic nightmare encountered by two families, while leaving Las Vegas.

Seth and I have more in common than the Perseid Collapse World. My wife and I used to live on the Las Vegas Strip. In fact, the cover art for Seth’s novella was taken by us during a large fire at a local hotel-casino resort. It set the tone perfectly for EVADE, which has been a great seller for Seth.

SETH TURNER The High Desert DriftersBut there is another creative side to Seth. Several years ago, he started down a road he hoped would lead him to Nashville (ironically, it would be a road similar to the one I took to arrive in Muddy Pond from Las Vegas – Interstate 40!). In 2008, his path intersected with the roads of six other outstanding musicians. Their talents meshed and today they’re known as Seth Turner and The High Desert Drifters.

This fine group displays a wide array of talents and personalities as they perform music that spans generations and encompasses many genres while always staying true to their roots, authentic country music. With Seth and his band, you get more than a show, you get an experience.

We discuss what led him to writing, and his vision of a post-apocalyptic Las Vegas. I might make him sing as well! Listen in to the conversation as I welcome Seth Turner to the Prepping for Tomorrow program.

The Wisdom and know how series
JD Cooper “Surviving Dystopia

Wisdom and know howThere is another set of books that preppers should know about and these are just full of useful information.  The Natural healing wisdom& know how has been read to tatters around this house.

I personally own Country, Survival, and Natural Healing Wisdom& Know How, but discovered that here is also three others Craft, Woodworking and Garden Wisdom & Know How that I simply must have now.

2-17-16 20160213_204644One can find these books almost anywhere, one of mine I found at Home Depot.  There are places to find books on such topics that are outside of the normal venues you might look for homesteading and preparedness topics.  I found that Lowes also had a pretty nice smattering of these that sidetracked one of my shopping trips for quite a little spell. Another place I like to check out for interesting reads is Tractor Supply.  These places unlike big box stores keeps their selection relevant to the other products you find there, making it easy to check out a few choice titles without having to search an entire book store.

Country Wisdom & Know How is published by Storey Publishing, a well-respected publisher in the categories of country living, crafts and animals.  This one book at nearly 500 pages of illustrated know how is a must have.  I found it funny that a poor review on Amazon made it sound right up my alley.

“…The book is basically the knowledge you would get from your grey haired granpa if you didn’t shut him up in a nursing home.  It is great info that most people don’t want to know anymore because they buy their junk from China, get their food prepackaged from Kroger love their cell phones and hate touching dirt.” –By Constantshopper

Join me to hear about more of this series and some of my favorite projects outlined in these books.  Being a huge advocate of knowledge and educating yourself rather than just stocking up a few cans of tuna under that bed, I am always looking for ways to learn more about sustainable and off grid living.

Steve Konkoly: Best Selling Author of The Perseid Collapse Series
Host Bobby Akart “The Prepping for Tomorrow Show

Steve KonkolyOn this week’s episode of the Prepping for Tomorrow program with Author Bobby Akart, bestselling author and close friend Steve Konkoly will be our special guest.

I cannot say enough about the success Steve has achieved in his life. All of our listeners know him as a hugely successful author. But his career and family life goes way beyond his writing. He is a graduate of the United States Naval Academy with a degree in English Literature. But that doesn’t mean he’s a softie.

1-28-16 perseid-collapse-coverHe spent the next eight years on active duty serving our great country in various U. S. Navy and Marine Corps units. From enforcing United Nations sanctions against Iraq as a maritime boarding officer in the Arabian Gulf, to directing aircraft bombing runs and naval gunfire strikes as a Forward Air Controller (FAC) assigned to a specialized Marine Corps unit, Steve’s experience with a wide range of regular and elite military units brings a unique authenticity to his thriller fiction.

1-28-16 the-jakarta-pandemicSteve lives with his family in central Indiana, where he still wakes up at “zero dark thirty” to write for most of the day. His first novel, The Jakarta Pandemic, is the definitive pandemic novel. With nearly nine hundred reviews, and tens of thousands of copies sold, it set the stage for Steve’s brilliant writing career which includes the four book Black Flagged Series, the hugely successful Perseid Collapse Series, and countless novellas as part of Kindle Worlds.

On a personal note, Steve was instrumental in convincing me to write. I still have the Facebook Messenger conversation from December 20, 2014. Steve asked, “On a separate note, have you ever written fiction, or wanted to? I ask because ….”.

My answer was simple, “Dude, I used to be a lawyer, my whole world is fictional! I. AM. NOT. AFRAID. LOL!”

51+d9+9ABrL._SX312_BO1,204,203,200_With his encouragement, and guidance, I wrote Evil, Meet Opportunity, a prequel novella to The Perseid Collapse Kindle World. Within weeks after its release Evil, Meet Opportunity achieved #1 Best Seller status in the Action, Adventure category. At that point, I knew that writing was something I should pursue, so I joined the circus. Steve and I put our heads together, and The Boston Brahmin series was born. The rest, as they say, is history.

On this episode we discuss his upcoming work, Fractured State, which is slated for a May release. This will be Steve’s best work to date and has the potential to be another #1 Best Seller on Steve’s impressive book shelf. Cat Ellis “Herbal Prepper Live

Alpha Farm Women with gunsIf you enjoy prepper fiction, then you’ll love Annie Berdel’s book, Alpha Farm, The Beginning. Annie will be giving away a paperback copy of her book, as well as an audio copy.

Alpha Farm, The Beginning has a solid story with un-apologetically strong female characters, which is something not typically seen in most prepper fiction books. Too often, women are relegated to the sidelines in these stories. Not here.

Instead, one woman has taken it upon herself to utilize her connections to other preparedness-minded women, and institute a network of safe houses around the country in case of a disaster- or in the case of this story, multiple, simultaneous disasters. There are plenty of twists and turns, and loads of lessons for preppers in the telling of this tale.

From her Amazon Author profile:

Based in Indianapolis, Annie Berdel is a self proclaimed advocate of educating women in the art of personal protection and self reliance.

As an aspiring writer, Annie took her advocacy and dove into the dystopia genre with strong female lead characters.

A passion for firearms, herbal medicine, knives, slingshots, home canning, Kali street fighting, Kempo karate and furry animals fuels the fire and adds countless stories to be told beginning with her inaugural book “Alpha Farm, The Beginning”.

Join me and Annie Berdel as we discuss her book, personal dynamics during a crisis, prepping, guns, herbal remedies, and who knows what else!

Emergency Evacuations and Lisa Bedford
Cat Ellis “Herbal Prepper Live

Emergency EvacuationsEveryone wants to know when is it time to “bug out”? Leaving too soon could cost you your job or reputation. Leaving too late could cost you your life. While every circumstance is different, Lisa gave this question its own chapter and covered the topic in an orderly, logical manner.

Lisa Bedford’s new book would benefit prepper and non-prepper alike. Lisa will be giving away a copy of Emergency Evacuations during the live broadcast. In order to win, you must be in the chat room while the show airs, which is also a perfect opportunity to ask Lisa questions about the bug out scenarios that concern you most.

It is exceptionally practical, logical, and a grounded approach to preparing for very tense situations. Lisa’s book lacks the overly dramatic, doomsday feel that many prepper books have. While Emergency Evacuations addresses long term bug outs, the focus is on the most likely evacuation scenarios, such as a house fire and natural disasters, such as hurricanes and earthquakes. This makes her book ideal as a gift to non-preppers, and a gateway to other survival conversations.

12-6-15 lisabedfordLisa Bedford is the owner of the very popular preparedness website, TheSurvivalMom.com. She is also the author of the Amazon best selling preparedness book, Survival Mom: How to Prepare You Family for Everyday Disasters and Worst-Case Scenarios. Omega Plague Post-Apocalypse

Omega Plague Post-Apocalypse
D.J. Cooper “Surviving Dystopia

Omega Plague Post-ApocalypseThis week on Surviving Dystopia it is my genuine pleasure to welcome fellow indie author P.R. Principe, Author of the post-apocalyptic novel, Omega Plague: Collapse.

A description from his website on his book, “An airborne strain of the AIDS virus decimates humanity. Bruno Ricasso, an Italian cop, a Carabiniere, struggles to survive on the island of Capri while Europe erupts in flames and society crumbles. But when his solitary existence is broken, Bruno returns to the empty city of Naples in search of answers.

11-18-15 virusCan Bruno find a way to stay alive in the ruins of civilization? Or will Bruno’s past sins prove even more deadly than the Omega Plague?”

This really brings questions to mind about such things we may need to think of in preparing for biological disasters in our efforts. Having served on active duty as a commissioned U.S. Air Force officer I think brings the military perspective to the possibilities in such a scenario.

He also has learned to forge a broadsword and has an amateur radio license, hopefully he can share some that knowledge with us this week and give a perspective that is both valuable and interesting.

As with other Post-apocalyptic authors I have had on the show, I am curious about ways we can use fiction to help enhance our preparedness and provide different perspectives to possible outcomes maybe we could have overlooked. I too would love to delve into the world of the indie artists with him and get his take on the indie world.

11-18-15 ebolaHis book as with mine has an element of the biological dangers that may lie in wait for the unprepared masses. Differences in each of these also affect the means by which we may prepare and keep ourselves safe. He speaks of airborn Aids virus while I found Ebola to be particularly nasty in my book. Either way the issues that come along with any Plague or epidemic are scary and specific. I look forward to gaining his insight and discussing our books and the impact that the scenarios might imply.

Take a moment to grab his book here. Give it a read and join us for some conversation and a look into the thoughts of its author. Check P.R. Principe out on the web as well.

Folks, my book “The Modern Survival Manual: Surviving the Economic Collapse”, made it yet again to #1 Best Seller in Disaster Relief today in Amazon.
I just wanted to thank all of you for your support. You guys are fantastic.
If you haven’t picked a copy yet consider doing so. I’m confident it’s a useful survival manual for these trying times and most of the urban survival strategies regarding economic collapse, inflation, security, self-defense and practical preparedness are applicable both before and after SHTF.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Thinking of writing another book

Click here to view the original post.

A few years ago I published the book A Survival Story. I had a ball writing it as I wrote the story in “real-time” on the Internet. Readers would visit the website daily to get new updates. It turned out pretty decent and is currently available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle editions. The Kindle edition has been recently edited.

I am getting the writing itch again and am looking more towards fiction than non-fiction. I have been jotting down some storyline ideas but really struggling. Yes – this will be a preparedness story but I really would like something different. I could do zombies or economic collapse or EMP – whatever. Seems pretty much everything has been done before. Maybe a topic with a new twist?

Any thoughts or suggestions on a book topic/storyline?

Take care all –
