This Could Have Been Bad – Solar Kill Shot

I noticed a curious title on Suspicious Observers latest video and took a few minutes to watch it.
Ben mentioned that the Sun let off an X class solar flare that was “Titanic” and if it was pointed towards Earth, would have been a kill shot. He said, “it would have had me sending you to the store for supplies if it had come this way.”
It had me thinking about how I would respond if the solar flare would have been pointed our way. What would you do?
Not Doom Porn
The thing with Ben and Suspicious Observers is that he is not a doom porn seller. He is not sensational. In fact, when I see articles and reports about big space weather or natural disasters, I usually head over to his Youtube channel. Like recently when people were worried about all the earthquakes around Yellowstone. Instead of panicking, I headed over to his channel because I knew he would tell it like it is.
Suspicious Observers does have an APP that I highly recommend. The Disaster Prediction APP (for Android, for iOS), sends out alerts. So if the big one comes, you’ll know ahead of time! It is only $2.99. You should buy it! Below is a video on how to use the APP.
I’ve also shared out alerts from SO on the Prepper Website Facebook Group. If you’re not a member, request to join. I hope to keep it a “cordial” place where we can talk about preparedness and self-reliance and learn from each other.
It’s not in the scope of this article to get you prepped for a solar flare. All preparedness should begin with a plan. If you don’t have one, start with a book that lays it out for you. Many of you know that I am a Christian and a pastor. It has been said that prophecy makes up anywhere from 21 – 27% of the Bible. It is a significant amount and something we should pay attention to.
One thing that I try to stay aware of is what is happening in the Middle East, especially Israel. Many people don’t know that riots have been going on there. I’ve only seen it on Twitter. One of my church members said he has also heard it on NPR. But what is going on there is lacking coverage from the mainstream media, of course!

One person I know who is always going to talk about Israel is John Haller. His weekly Prophecy Updates discuss a lot of stuff that is currently relevant. I used to always link to his videos on Prepper Church, but I was just getting too busy to try to maintain all of it. But I do listen to his updates every week. This week, he discusses Jerusalem and what is going on in greater detail. I think it is significant enough to link here.
Ironically enough, in the first 2 minutes, he discusses an article in WIRED magazine that discusses the risk of Cyberwar and our electrical grid going down. I tracked down the article, because I usually don’t read WIRED, and linked it here for you.
The world is crazy! I don’t understand people who don’t see the need to prep, now more so than ever.

This has already been the craziest election in the history of the country, with the most overt corruption and fraud the American people have likely ever seen.
Now, on top of everything else that’s scheduled to go down tomorrow, it is being projected that a powerful coronal mass ejection(CME) is set to hit Earth tomorrow, and not just hit earth but a direct hit is in our forecast.
According to Space Weather Live, “A coronal mass ejection (or CME) is a giant cloud of solar plasma drenched with magnetic field lines that are blown away from the Sun during strong, long-duration solar flares and filament eruptions.”
What this means is the very real potential for strong geomagnetic storms here on Earth. Potential storms from CMEs like this have been known to cause everything from lost satellite control to radio and television interference to power grid disruption and failure.
For example, in March 1989, a powerful CME caused strong variations in the Earth’s magnetic field which tripped circuit breakers in Québec’s power grid, causing a massive blackout.
What makes this timing even more unsettling is the fact that just weeks ago, Obama signed a brand new executive order on October 13, 2016 specifically regarding Department of Energy, Department of Defense, and Homeland Security coordination in handling “space weather events” as reported by Mac Slavo over at SHTFplan.com:
Executive Order — Coordinating Efforts to Prepare the Nation for Space Weather Events
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and to prepare the Nation for space weather events, it is hereby ordered as follows:
Section 1. Policy. Space weather events, in the form of solar flares, solar energetic particles, and geomagnetic disturbances, occur regularly, some with measurable effects on critical infrastructure systems and technologies, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), satellite operations and communication, aviation, and the electrical power grid. Extreme space weather events — those that could significantly degrade critical infrastructure — could disable large portions of the electrical power grid, resulting in cascading failures that would affect key services such as water supply, healthcare, and transportation. Space weather has the potential to simultaneously affect and disrupt health and safety across entire continents. Successfully preparing for space weather events is an all-of-nation endeavor that requires partnerships across governments, emergency managers, academia, the media, the insurance industry, non-profits, and the private sector.
What are the odds???
It’s not like CMEs and solar flares are anything new… so why all of a sudden are they saying we need to, “speed the creation of a space-weather-ready Nation” right before it comes out that just a geomagnetic disturbance might happen on election day?
Add to that the fact that recently Homeland Security was also talking about taking over the elections as a matter of national security…
Do they know something we don’t here? Either way, considering that most of our data on these things comes from government agencies, the timing definitely makes you wonder what shenanigans are going to get pulled tomorrow with our easily hacked electronic voting machines…
Can’t you just see the “confusion” that could be caused by intermittent power outages on election day, all blamed on the sun?
And no matter what, it’s always good to be prepared.

Determining the specific ramifications after something like a high-altitude electromagnetic pulse weapon (EMP) attack, or even a Carrington Event-style coronal mass ejection (CME) is kind of a guessing game at this point.
However, one thing we do know is that some of the most horrifying effects of an EMP disaster will occur about a week after our grid gets fried. That’s why I’ve decided to take a visualized journey into what the US might look like, seven days after an EMP — and let’s just say that the state of the union will be a bleak one.
If you live in a city or suburban area, then it’s no secret that when you look into the sky on a cloudless evening, you’re basically seeing a fraction of the stars that someone from, say, an Arizona desert might be viewing. The reason is that the cumulative artificial lighting from your surrounding area – the light pollution — is blocking out the stars. In a city (and other somewhat densely populated zones), you can walk around at night without a flashlight, because the area is practically bathed in artificial light.

After an EMP, however, everything will go as dark as a lifeless desert or wilderness mountainside. Since at this point, people will be running out of battery juice for their flashlights, cloud-covered evenings will be pitch black.
This might not necessarily be such a bad thing, if you’re planning on running your bugout operation under the cover of complete and total darkness.
But the absence of light won’t be the only “darkness.”
There will be a cognitive, communicative darkness sweeping from sea to shining sea, especially since the methods that we’ve depended upon to exchange information will have been gutted
- Emergency services will not be able to coordinate or exchange information.
- The Internet infrastructure in the US will have been completely destroyed.
- Telephones and cell towers will have been fried.
- Radio and TV stations will have been destroyed.
- Even ham radio operators (that have not hardened their systems to EMP) will have nothing but electronically damaged gear.
Most people will have no clue what happened (because let’s face it, most people aren’t aware of these types of threats). It will be a complete and total information blackout and a true time of total darkness in the US after an EMP takes its hefty toll.
If anything, this type of information blackout will become cause for a nationwide sense of desperation. The US is primarily an info-based society, because we currently enjoy the ability to share information and to communicate globally with ease. In a way, that’s what makes this modern digital era such a time, which has been ripe with opportunities.
However, we’ve become extremely dependent on easily accessible information via electronic means, and almost totally independent on word-of-mouth sources (the likes of which were the norm during pre-modern times).
Confusion soon becomes desperation, because not only will people become very concerned that the state of things has not improved within a seven-day timeframe, but they also will have no ability to obtain information as to what exactly is going on. The effects of this will be extremely psychologically destructive. And at the same time, we will have a snowball-effect problem in the works …
- EMP strike renders the grid inoperable.
- Grid electricity is required to pump gasoline through pipelines and into tractor trailer trucks and locomotives (the primary movers of goods in the US).
- Supply chains will stop because tractor trailer trucks and locomotives are no longer going anywhere, due to fossil fuels becoming inaccessible at local pumps.
- A complete shortage of consumer goods will occur, since companies can no longer get their goods from distribution centers to retail/grocery stores.
Also within days of the EMP strike, it will become quickly apparent that law enforcement can no longer communicate effectively, thereby disabling their ability to maintain law and order. Looting will likely ensue shortly thereafter.
In addition, dangerous and disruptive aftershocks of this crisis will being to occur on a national scale. For instance, all across the US, flooding, fires and town-leveling explosions will begin to erupt without warning. Not only will many homes and businesses burn to the ground due to the initial electromagnetic wave that causes smaller scale electrical fires, but when entire utility substations begin to leak millions of gallons of flammable-toxic liquids, this will result in major cataclysms.
But regardless of proximity to massive ecological disasters and multi-kiloton gasoline blasts, there will be hundreds of millions of personal crises occurring. After seven days of people not having been able to use their credit/debit cards to make transactions, nationwide looting in even rural areas will become commonplace.
There will be a temporary run on the banks, but since cash isn’t nearly as common these days, most people will be forced to resort to theft and bartering in order to feed themselves and their loved ones.
Through the culmination of depleted consumer grocery/retail goods, the widespread coordination breakdown and manpower deficiencies of emergency services, and a total information blackout of communication, including the blanket of darkness at night, the state of the union at seven days after an EMP would, in essence, be one of nationwide disorder.
The US would begin its descent into an epidemic of anarchy.
At this point, not only would the federal, state and local government be rendered practically useless, but even if they were able to maintain a certain level of solvency, they wouldn’t have the ability to communicate with the population at large.
Virtually everyone, regardless of wealth status, creed, race or gender, will have no possible way of accessing their electronically held funds … and because of the relative newness of the crisis, most people will not yet have thought to adopt the barter system to slow the nation’s economic hemorrhaging.
One week after an EMP, each household and individual will have to provide for and protect themselves, carrying the tremendous weight of the same fundamental responsibilities and capacities that the national law enforcement, military, civil government, and US economic system had been carrying only a week ago. And since everyone now will have become hopelessly impoverished, having most likely burned through the contents of their pantries at this point, then the US population at large will have reached a maximum state of confusion and desperation … as it takes its final dive into utter chaos.
A Crisis of Confusion
In a way, it isn’t a forgone conclusion to suspect that FEMA will not have to round up a single person to check in at their nationwide franchises. No, most people will probably elect to check themselves in for a free meal and “secure” lodging. Martial law would be the next step.
Yet in such a crisis, there will be a good bit of hope for those of us who have adequately prepared ourselves in advance. Not only will we have the cover of darkness shielding our escape to the backwoods, but confusion tends to obfuscate the movements and actions of the tactically wise and strategically sound. And so, in the event of an EMP, I would like to say…

The sun provided another reminder of its intense power and great threat to the modern world this week when a massive solar flare launched from the sun and briefly caused a disruption in shortwave radio signals that are used by airplanes and government weather stations.
Incredibly, the flare came from an area of the sun where a sunspot five times the size of the Earth resides.
The April 17 solar flare was classified by NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center as an M6.7 flare, meaning it was a medium-sized flare and not as large as a larger X-class flare, which often occur during major solar storms that could cause long-term blackouts and potentially take out the power grid.
“M-class flares are a tenth the size of the most intense flares, the X-class flares,” a NASA press release stated. “The number provides more information about its strength. An M2 is twice as intense as an M1, an M3 is three times as intense, etc.”
The sunspot was visible from Earth without magnification at the time but has since rotated away from our planet.
X-class flares almost always take place at the same time as what’s called coronal mass ejections (CME), which can do major damage to technology on Earth. In July 2012, a CME large enough to take out the power grid crossed Earth’s orbit but missed the plant by about a week. X-class flares also were emitted during that time.
“Analysts believe that a direct hit by an extreme CME such as the one that missed Earth in July 2012 could cause widespread power blackouts, disabling everything that plugs into a wall socket,” a NASA news report in July 2012 read. “Most people wouldn’t even be able to flush their toilet because urban water supplies largely rely on electric pumps.”
In 1859, an extreme CME did hit earth, leading to Northern Lights in Hawaii and the Caribbean, and causing major damage to the most sophisticated technology of the day, the telegraph. Some telegraph offices even caught fire. The storm was dubbed the “Carrington Event,” so named for the scientist who observed it.
“A similar storm today could have a catastrophic effect,” the NASA report said. “According to a study by the National Academy of Sciences, the total economic impact could exceed $2 trillion or 20 times greater than the costs of a Hurricane Katrina. Multi-ton transformers damaged by such a storm might take years to repair.”
Said Daniel Baker of the University of Colorado, “In my view the July 2012 storm was in all respects at least as strong as the 1859 Carrington event. The only difference is, it missed.”

Preppers know that today’s civilization is too dependent on electricity. Most can manage a power outage of a few hours or even one or two days. And, if things become too inconvenient, those affected by the power outage can just get in their vehicle and drive to a part of the city or state that is not experiencing a power outage.
But what if a whole nation goes down?
That scenario usually comes up when you think of an earth directed solar flare or EMP. Now, with cyber terrorism becoming a big possibility, many realize that our high-tech world can have some serious issues when an enemy wants to access our grid through an internet or network connection.
But I didn’t realize that there was an English counterpart to American Blackout. I mean English as in across the pond… A friend of mine told me about the British documentary the other day. It is called….wait for it…. Britain Blackout.
The documentary follows the same premise as American Blackout, it just might be a little darker. But as you can imagine, it comes with looting, rioting, people making bad decisions, blaming the government and even a “self-sufficient” guy. ***Warning*** – There is a lot of bad language in the British version.
The lessons are always the same:
Have backup power! – Having something like a Solar Charger Zzero small solar battery backup is smart. You can also go with a battery/solar powered radio. You might want to even make your own battery backup system. If you were to add a solar panel, you would be in good shape! Check out the solar tag cloud on Prepper Website.
Have redundancies and backups! – Don’t keep all your eggs in one basket. One guy gets robbed and all his food is taken. He starts to make some bad choices after that.

Most of us have heard of this thing called the EMP, but what exactly is it? E.M.P. is short forElectro Magnetic Pulse, in essence a surge of electricity capable of frying modern electronics.
There is some history behind the EMP, it was discovered as a side effect of nuclear detonation. However, that is not the only thing that can produce an EMP and modern electronics are not the only thing possibly effected. In 1859 a solar storm, also known as the Carrington Event produced one of the largest geomagnetic storms ever recorded. A coronal mass ejection also known as a CME hit earth’s magnetosphere producing this geomagnetic storm which also had the E.M.P. effect. This was so large that U.S. telegraph operators reported sparks leaping from their equipment some were bad enough to set fires.
An EMP can also be produced by detonating a nuclear explosion at extremely high altitudes, when striking the upper atmosphere the intial gamma ray burst creates high energy electrons that become trapped in the earth’s magnetic field generating a pulse of electromagnetic energy. An EMP was discovered as a side effect of the Starfish Prime nuclear test on July 9, 1962. All it took was a 1.5 Megaton bomb that blew up street lights and tv sets in Hawaii 1,000 miles away, even destroying a number of satellites including the Telstar I.
The findings of the EMP commission report of 2008 clearly shows we are indeed vulnerable to an EMP attack. If something similar happened today with all the high tech equipment that maintains and runs even our most basic of services the world would come to a screeching halt. Our power grid is seriously in need of upgrade and even our vehicles today have susceptible computers that keep them running. Power, internet, phones all would disappear. Your water would cease to flow and even the trucks that bring food to your local stores might cease to run.

I recently started reading your blog (love it!) and have your EMP First 15 Steps PDF. I have a couple more business trips planned for the rest of 2015, and some are quite a distance from home. I wondered if you could give any advice at all on what I should prep for, gear-wise or even mentally?The thought of an EMP happening when I am NOT at home, maybe not with my spouse and children, it scares me. I just want to be as prepared as I can be, because who knows when something like this could happen — 2 minutes from now or 2 years from now?
You can never get home, or can you?
“Craig worries that he may be trapped out of town and that all conventional forms of travel could be shut down. He always carries enough cash so that, no matter which city he’s in, he would be able to buy a bicycle, biking shoes, and whatever other equipment he would need to take him back to St. Louis.”“Craig assumes that he could ride 150 to 200 miles a day. He’s thought about this a lot. “Last place I want to be is in a major metropolitan area during a time of national crisis.”
- Transportation. Planning on hoofing it home? Better start getting into super-shape now!
- Water. Where you’re stranded and the terrain between you and home will determine if you will be able to find a plentiful supply of water on a regular basis. If you’re not sure you can, stay where you are.
- Food. Can you set traps? Hunt and fish using alternative methods? Can you identify edible and medicinal wild plants? Do you know which parts are edible and which are poisonous? Do you know how to start a small fire for cooking and purifying water, and, if so, what will you use for a cooking pot? These are just a few of the issues to consider.
- Shelter. Putting up a lean-to is one thing, but surviving the elements within that shelter is quite another.
- Security. You may be surrounded by people more desperate than you. More fit, more strong than you. Can you survive on your wits alone? What self-defense skills do you have?
- Weather and terrain. Those will both change as you travel. Are you ready for all possibilities? Do you know of alternate routes that might be easier or would allow you to avoid populated areas?
5 Possible ways to survive post-EMP when miles separate you and your loved ones
In my view, being stranded from home in a post-EMP world would leave you with few options. As part of my own research into EMP survival, here are a few viable options in case the worst really does happen and you are dozens, if not hundreds, of miles from home.
- Head home regardless, carrying with you the basics for survival, or whatever you can acquire. Survival novels are full of tales of determined men, making their way home to their families over hundreds of miles. This option might work if you are in good physical shape, have no health issues, and are blessed with an enormous amount of luck. It wouldn’t hurt if the terrain between you and your family has multiple supplies of water. Forget it if you have more than just a few miles of desert to traverse.
- Stay put and lay low. If you have the skills and knowledge, set up a wilderness camp and use your ingenuity and Boy Scout skills to live off the land. You’ll end up dying a pretty quick death, most likely, but this is an option.
- Stay put and try to become an indispensable part of another household or group. If you have a bank of life-saving skills, such as knowing how to grow and preserve food, medical training, or can help guard your new group of fellow survivors. When the infrastructure begins to be rebuilt, you can then begin heading home.
- Stay put and start a new life. This option isn’t necessarily pessimistic. Given the circumstances, you may have no other choice.
- Do a little bit of both. Combine stints on the road, always heading homeward, with time spent staying with a community or with a family. They might be grateful for the additional help with physical labor and whatever practical skills you possess may help get them through a difficult time until you’re able to travel again.
