Right now, the United States is experiencing the worst flu season in nearly a decade. Over 100 people have died, and as of this writing, the flu virus continues to spread rapidly. Experts thought it would peak weeks ago, but it still hasn’t. Currently, no one knows how bad it will get. All of this […]

How NOT to get the Flu on an Airplane Flight Unless you want to wear a bio-hazard suit, here is a list of what you can do to avoid catching the Flu on an airplane. According to National Air Traffic Controllers Association resources, there are an average 26,527 passenger flights per day and 5,000 aircraft in the sky at any given time over the United States. The latest NATCA data also indicates that 928,900,000 passengers were served during 2016. That averages to more than 2.5 million passengers per day across the USA. Especially during Flu Season, odds are that many

How To Prep For Facing The Next Deadly Plague Outbreak

It’s no doubt that misery, indeed, loves company. When you think about it, what else is there to ‘love’ in a bad SHTF scenario so gruesome where pretty soon you might be all alone in this world with nobody left to hold your hand as you step into the afterlife without a clue?

In that perspective, the following warning may not assuage those who prefer NOT to die alone. Because this ‘mother of all apocalyptic scenarios’ might just violate your socially conditioned emotional content beyond anything you’ve ever experienced, or imagined.

If you find yourself sometimes thinking about things like “the calm before the storm” or relaxing too much in your prepping because there seems to be a slowdown in being threatened with cyber attacks on the power grid or promised HEMP attacks, don’t hold your breath too long.

Other bad things associated with living on a planet controlled by unconscious humans will no doubt pick up the slack and hit us at any given moment.

Right now there is something ‘that wicked cometh’ in a stealth kind of mode, that makes everything else pale by comparison.

Unfortunately, nobody pays much attention to the possibility of this type of event because a precursor to it always lives with us in more mundane forms of everyday health problems and sickness and most of us just deal with it.

We even developed a ‘normalcy bias’ so we just don’t think about the doomsday extrapolation that’s always just a small deviation away of changing our world in likely the most horrible of all scenarios.

Yet ominously, just few days ago…this Doomsday leap it might have happened.

This is the One Your Mama or at least Some Scientist Warned About

This deadly Resident Evil is spawned off the East African Coast on the island of Madagascar. It comes in the form of an endemic circumstance due to the impoverished lifestyle and optimal breeding ground for such diseases in this country.

If you haven’t heard about it until this report, it’s because they intentionally try to keep it under wraps as long as they can to see if they could quarantine the outbreak at the source while the World Health Organization rushed in to get a grip on the situation.

It turned out to be too late.

Plague Outbreak!

The Plague is nothing new. Evidence points to it being in China over 2500 years ago, and surely before that period in time. The major historic exposure event was during the 14th century in Europe.

It was referred to in history books as the ‘Black Death’, a name derived from one of the physical manifestations of the disease in dying victims where extremities and parts of their bodies turned black from the results of mass systemic sepsis overload causing gangrene and black necrosis of the skin.

The Black Plague was originally believed to be caused only by a version of the Yersinia Pestis Bacterium known as the Bubonic plague. This bacteria lives in dead animal carcasses and is picked up by fleas and transmitted to humans when bitten.

This Bubonic Plague spread rapidly and wiped out half of the European population around 1349. It was believed that the unstoppable spread of the Black Death plague was due to the excessively filthy living conditions and deplorable sanitation situation at the time which contributed to the widespread infestation of vermin, which proliferated the human biting fleas.

And since most Europeans back then were within spitting distance of these fleas, the resulting pandemic was inevitable.

However new analysis leaves most scientists not that convinced that mobilized rats infested with Bubonic plague carrying fleas as a sole transmission vector were the cause of the rapid spread of Bubonic plague throughout Europe at the time. This is due to too many anomalies in the mechanics of the pandemic spread and in the rat fleas theory that can’t be explained like the rapid virulence in areas where there were virtually no rats or fleas?

The modern conclusion is that it appears that it is more likely that a mutation of the Bubonic Yersinia bacteria evolved during the first year of the pandemic from advanced sickness cases where the lungs of victims were badly infected with the Yersinia Sepsis. They mutated into a far more virulent and contagious version of the bacteria that could be transmitted directly from human to human by coughing, sneezing, body fluid contamination, or even normal up close conversation through the micro-droplets of fine aerosol spray coming up from infected lungs.

This would be known as the Pneumonic Plague, and although rare, there are still known cases today of this horrific disease resulting from outbreaks and epidemics in India and parts of Asia as recent as the 20th century.

There are even a few cases of Plague a year reported by the CDC in the U.S. So far it’s the Bubonic version, mostly out west where vermin like rats and prairie dogs have reached out of control numbers and occasionally a hunter gets infected from direct contact with an infected carcass.

But since the incubation period of the Bubonic version is so short before they get sick, they get to a hospital soon enough, or die quickly, to avoid spreading it very much, where it is quarantined and contained and an outbreak is avoided.

But not in Other Parts of the World!

In certain parts of Africa, and particularly on Madagascar, there have been smaller outbreaks of the much deadlier form of Pneumonic Plague over the last few years in terms of its virulent contagiousness. For the most part these have been contained due to the relative remote isolation of incidents in such a large continent.

The grave issue here is that this very virulent form of the plague was not given more serious attention earlier and appears to have been treated as any other disease endemic to the country like Malaria, Dengue, occasional cases of Bubonic Plague, and the rare, but more dramatic and newsworthy cases of Ebola hemorrhagic fever.

So any small outbreak of the plague in the African hemisphere is apparently considered no more dangerous as a typical flu season here in the U.S. and treated with relative indifference. And since official policy in these third world regions is usually not to create panic, news blackouts are strictly enforced (remember, only America has 1st/A Free Speech and press) and barely a rumor or two gets out, and are rarely covered in the Western MSM.

So one might also then think that since they apparently are handling these cases, that there wouldn’t be much to ‘worry’ about in any case, but…

This Time You Might Be “Dead” Wrong

Because news of a recent ‘outbreak’ in Madagascar leaked out and this time it’s a potential worst case possible scenario. The bad news is that it’s not just one or two isolated cases. There are at least a hundred infected victims now.

This is the silent assassin that no gun can kill!

And the worse news is that this disease is confirmed to be the Pneumonic Plague! The real deal of historic mass pandemic population wipe outs.

And this time, they apparently cannot guarantee quarantine the spread of this outbreak without massive outside aid! Madagascar is a poor country that’s a breeding ground for disease without the health system capabilities to confront it.

Already there are rumors that a carrier had jumped the quarantine to the nearby Seychelle islands, even as international air travel has been officially suspended from Madagascar. But this outbreak is still not contained because local airlines like Kenya Airways might still be operating anyway in parts of Africa because it appears that a person with the Pneumonic Plague has been discovered and is being treated in Nairobi.

If a Pneumonic Plague outbreak jumps to the African mainland, a relatively short distance away, without somehow being immediately contained under strict quarantine, there’s a good chance that a super major pandemic will occur.

The pneumonic version of the Plague Bacterium is so virulently contagious that it simply can’t be stopped in today’s world paradigm of excessively mobile and rapid overseas transit amidst an ever- growing population of travelers if it breaks loose to widespread infections because of the astounding indifference to the paucity of preventive medicine in these nations or origin.

Also exacerbated by the WHO’s (World Health Organizations) strange indifference to this very real potential SHTF outbreak by not even recommending trade or commerce travel restrictions! Then it will be only a matter of a short time before it hits the Western countries.

And apparently, that’s exactly what just happened from just breaking reports. It appears as though the disease jumped from the Seychelles to a passenger wind up at the Nairobi International airport where thousands of other travelers come in contact with each other daily.

And only now, and perhaps way too late, are we starting to see reports of Health authorities becoming alarmed.

The Grim Reaper Two-Step?

But wait, there’s more!

While incompetent third world authorities try to struggle out of their apathy box to assess damage control, their reluctance to care about anything too much outside of kickbacks recommending highly questionable vaccines from their Big Pharma profiteer lobbyist donations, another very potential pandemic looks like it’s on back burner, ready to boil over.

Australia just announced that already there are almost three times as many serious Flu cases this year than last year at this time! Even though they had a large vaccination campaign in 2016.

Australia doctors already fear that the strain is mutating to a deadlier form. And current vaccines will not be matched and won’t be that effective. Not that they were ever that effective anyway?

So Australian health scientists are predicting that the U.S. will have a bad flu season this year, because traditionally, the Northern hemisphere gets what Australia has—or worse– a few weeks later in our ‘flu season’ now just beginning.

And just this past week scientists admitted that this year could be the one long time overdue epidemic where unpredictable Influenza strains can make the deadliest leap yet recorded in history. And they don’t know if they can get an improved vaccine out in time?

Now I’m one of those unfortunate persons who is ‘plagued’ by the ‘nothing is ever as it seems’ affliction. Over the last couple years I’ve noticed pumped up panic marketing of epidemic Influenza viruses coming fast so that you get your vaccination shots conveniently available everywhere from Walmart to truck stops and nothing much of a season ever came of it.

But a lot of Big Pharma profit was made.

But that doesn’t mean there will never be a Flu pandemic the likes of which killed of millions in the past. Again, we have insufficient health protections, and an overload of potential carriers in an exploding world population for these virulent diseases compared to previous times.

So here, too, it’s only a matter of time that highly contagious freak bacterium (read something like Flesh Eating Bacteria) and/or a super deadly mutated viruses–or both!–transform themselves into the ultimate universal killing machines!

Factor in inordinately curious government or Big Pharma organizations like the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority which just had 400 million of tax payers’ dollars pumped into its ‘projects’, among which is A Bird Flu Vaccine.

But Bird Flu almost never jumps to humans. And when it does, it’s rarely deadly. So why the interest in pumping this kind of money into developing a vaccine for it?

Could it be something to do with the fact that countries like China who recently admitted creating dozens of more powerful deadly mutations of Bird Flu virus (for what possible purpose?) with the capability of person to person viral transmission if they ever are released from the lab? Which certainly can never happen, right, RIGHT?

Of course not, even though France just admitted over a thousand test tubes of a very deadly SARS viruses simply ‘went missing’ from one of their labs, without further details?

Hmmm. We’ve heard of this type of ‘accident’ happening before, especially the way dangerous and deadly lab samples are transported so carelessly through the common mail and delivery services. But this kind of volume of SARS specimens requires extensive special handling with protected containers, full body suits, etc. These deadly locked up and surely ‘secured’ vials can’t just ‘walk’ out of a laboratory and vanish by themselves.

Many experts contend that it is just as likely that an intentional, accidental, or other weaponized outbreak and pandemic would be released sooner than a natural outbreak might occur, but the fact remains that these viruses and deadly bacteria are not only already seriously out there, but more are being developed every day!

And that means unlike prepping for specific or regional disasters, deadly germ and disease outbreaks are a primary prepping concern for everybody, everywhere, all of the time!

And I don’t mean merely getting vaccines, which simply have never been proven to help that much against a rapidly mutating strain of influenza.

You will accomplish more prevention, as always by becoming more situationally aware. If you don’t feel like sleeping tonight because you wanted to stay up to watch re-runs of Gunsmoke, first take a look at a website that will snap, crackle, and pop your eyes open for you, and use it to keep up on the latest related disease news. ‘The Disease News/Outbreak Daily Start’.

What to Do About It

If you’re a ‘seasoned’ prepper, then you pretty much know already. It’s the standard stuff. Have a good supply stock of essentials and more if you can before all hell breaks loose.

The main deadly difference with a deadly disease outbreak and pandemic is that with other SHTF catastrophes where people can and will come together, especially if you have organized ahead of time, to help and support each other, will not happen.

With the Pneumonic Plague or super deadly influenza excessive contact with others is a death sentence. Make sure you understand that if there’s even any hint of a Pneumonic Plague outbreak hitting the U.S.. They might not be announcing it directly and openly but you see on the news that hospital ERs are closing due to an uncommon influx of patients complaining of severe flu like symptoms (which, indeed, can also be a highly lethal influenza).

If so, you must ‘extremely’ limit unnecessary contact with others and the outside world in general. You must secure your outside defensive perimeter immediately, and make sure you’re prepared to hunker down for the duration.

If you’re new to prepping, get some of the books and tutorials here on disease and emergency health and start getting a plan together NOW. Otherwise here’s a few tips everybody needs to know for this very different kind of SHTF Scenario

Deadly Outbreak Prep

1. Bug Out to Your Safe Location

If you live in a city and you see the aforementioned signs unfolding, I, personally, would be bugging out to the alternate BOL at the first signs of a serious epidemic.

If it turns out to be nothing but an overly hyped (for vaccine sales) typical seasonal flu that’s contained, you can always come back. But you can’t come back if you already died already because you didn’t bug out in time!

Remember, too, that if it gets bad that Martial Law will likely be in effect and you might not be allowed to escape.

2. Reduce and Secure Contact with Other Humans

If possible, keep all contact with other living things not just at a minimum. BUT NOT AT ALL!

If you didn’t prepare all that well and now you have to risk going out because you absolutely positively got to have some beer and ‘tater chips… then avoid ALL direct contact by always wearing at least the paper surgical masks and sanitizing all physical contact with potentially contaminated areas before you take off your protective gloves.

If communicating directly or exchanging items is essential, then you must remain at least 30 feet apart and preferably up wind of the person you are talking to, while both of you wearing masks, if possible.

Put items transferred on the ground and retrieve only when distanced again, also wear protective gloves or suits.

But it’s best not to go out at all. In the great Spanish Flu outbreak of 1812 the people who lived stayed inside continuously without any contact with others.

3. Keep the 30 Feet Distance to Stay Safe

If you are not infected, DO NOT AT ANY COST ALLOW any other PEOPLE you don’t know for sure are safe TO GET NO CLOSER THAN 30 FEET FROM YOU! .

Anybody who has not been quarantined for a minimum of a week without showing symptoms is suspect. This goes for friends and relatives. Absolutely no handshakes, kisses, or ‘comfort hugging’. Tuff love is essential here. Otherwise there’s no love at all anymore, when you are dead.

4. Stockpile the Supplies that Boost Your Immune System

Make sure you’re well stocked with Vitamin C, Olive Leaf Extract, and 35% food grade h2o2 and any other preventive alternative and natural anti-virus/antibacterial herbs or compounds. Used correctly these can enhance your immunity to resist viruses and bacteria.

If you haven’t already, get a couple of publications on emergency medicine, epidemic protocols, and disease treatments. There’s some of the best available right here on Survivopedia.

This is the silent assassin that no gun can kill!

Let’s hope for the best, but get ready and prepare for the worst.

Final Threat Assessment

As of this writing, the first Flu Season counts five death.

Scientists are saying that we are long overdue for a very deadly Flu outbreak and world pandemic. And in combination with the abject negligence by so-called authorities in facing the clear potential of the world’s deadliest plague pandemics, this is adding up to something that we as individuals should be very concerned about.

This is another area where you simply cannot trust government authorities no matter what they promise.

And I didn’t even get into the added threat of weaponizing these diseases since at this point in time when they are literally there for the taking by radical extremists. Why waste the money and risk of strapping a suicide bomb when these biological weapons can kill even more than any other bomb?

The thing to remember about a super deadly global pandemic is that it is not as dramatic at first, as a sudden massive power grid takedown by terrorists or an EMP, a rapid economic collapse, or a nuclear war. It’s relatively quiet, like an Asian Cobra as it snakes up on you. And when it finally gets too close, it’s too late to survive anymore if you weren’t prepared in advance.

And the gravity of the situation doesn’t hit you until you look around and suddenly nothing is working anymore as it should, because people are too sick to go to work to keep the infrastructure from breaking down, or too afraid to come out of hiding while everything is falling apart, shutting down, and virtually most of civilization is dying, or about to…

And THAT, my beloved prepper family, might become a worse end times nightmare than all other apocalyptic scenarios put together.

A pandemic may incapacitate (and/or terminate) a significant portion of the population. It may cripple our infrastructure due to the lack of people working during the outbreak. It will likely leave you without groceries and other services for the duration (months or longer). If a deadly virus were to infect the population and spread easily from person to person, a pandemic (worldwide outbreak of disease) could begin. No one can predict when a pandemic might occur. The deadly diseases being released as ice thaws. Surviving the next pandemic.

Scientists have raised the issue of new old diseases being released by the global warming melting the ice. They say it is quite possible that these diseases have been lying dormant since before the coming of man. This means that we will have no immunity to these diseases, & we will have no medicines to combat these diseases. Once released & started they could sweep the globe annihilating humanity completely except perhaps in isolated cases.

In this day & age an infected person could get on a plane & be in another country before they even know they are carrying a disease!
So there is a hell of a biggy to add to our lists!

UNSEEN ENEMY: THE POTENTIAL LOOMING CRISIS OF THE NEXT DEADLY DISEASE PANDEMIC DEBUTS ON CNN

Click here to view the original post.
facebooktwittergoogle_plus

In the 21st century, we are all connected. Population growth, mass urbanization, deforestation, climate change and increased travel have dramatically increased the risk that familiar diseases will spread and mutate, and new ones will emerge. As people enter new spheres of biodiversity, they come into closer contact with other species, increasing the risk of viruses jumping from animals to humans, and then spreading more widely.

Unseen Enemy is an essential exploration into the increasing threat of emerging infectious disease outbreaks and their impacts on society. Meet healthcare workers, disease detectives and families who have experienced the horror and devastation of Ebola, Zika and Influenza epidemics and emerged deeply changed.

The world’s urgent call to action on pandemics like Zika, Ebola, flu has global premiere April 7.

OFFICIAL CNN FILMS PRESS RELEASE:

UNSEEN ENEMY, about the potential looming crisis of disease pandemics, will debut as a CNN Films broadcast for a World Health Day presentation Friday, April 7 at 9:00pm Eastern on CNN/U.S. The film, which is exclusively presented by Johnson & Johnson, will then replay at 12:00am Eastern. All broadcasts will have limited commercial interruptions.

UNSEEN ENEMY is narrated by Emmy® and Golden Globe award-winning actor Jeffrey Wright and is written and directed by award-winning filmmaker Janet Tobias. CNN’s chief medical correspondent Sanjay Gupta, MD, is an executive producer and consultant for the film. Philanthropist Paul G. Allen, known for his catalytic leadership during the 2014 West Africa Ebola outbreak, is also an executive producer.

Tobias embedded with some of the world’s top pathogen hunters and medical professionals for more than three years, crisscrossing the globe for UNSEEN ENEMY, to track outbreaks of Zika, Ebola, and influenza. From inside the hot zones in Brazil and Liberia, the film includes doctors who detail their heroic and often hazardous work from the front lines of the outbreak response. Doctors and researchers describe how they encountered the diseases, and how they are fighting the pathogens to save patients.

While the headlines of deadly outbreaks are alarming, Tobias’ film makes the case that successful containment can be achieved with coordinated efforts of medical professionals, researchers, governments, communicators, and the public. Two historic examples support her case. World-renowned epidemiologist Dr. Larry Brilliant, guides viewers through his difficult decisions as he worked on the teams that forcibly vaccinated the last remote villagers against smallpox. Others describe how the global spread of HIV/AIDS could have been stopped if governments and public health bodies had acted more deliberately to warn the public. Dr. Brilliant warns now that there may be 30 emerging human pathogens that have the potential to become epidemics.

“The public plays an essential role in the fight to contain and eradicate diseases like Ebola, Zika, and influenza,” said Dr. Gupta, about his engagement in producing UNSEEN ENEMY. “It’s always been my goal to bring the best scientific and medical information to viewers so they can make informed decisions that improve their health. The situation is urgent, but information can help make us less vulnerable,” he said.

In addition to the premiere broadcasts on World Health Day, UNSEEN ENEMY will encore Saturday, April 15 at 9:00pm and Sunday, April 16 at 2:00am Eastern, with a short, CNN-produced companion special. The special will feature CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta and Anderson Cooper with a discussion on the existing vulnerabilities to disease outbreaks and the tools needed to close the gaps in disease response.

“Because we witnessed epidemics up close during filming, our team came away with hope that we can win the fight against them. Around the world, there are dedicated scientists, innovative technologists, heroic doctors and nurses, as well as survivors, moms, dads, sisters, and brothers, who understand we all have a role to play,” said filmmaker Janet Tobias. “It’s only by each of us doing our part that we will win the battle.”

Profiled in the film to demonstrate the wide range of expertise needed to defeat the next global health crisis are:

**Laurie Garrett, a Pulitzer prize-winning health journalist explains why flu is one of the world’s potentially most serious pandemics and also why public health authorities need to shift current priorities to effectively meet the next crises;
**Soka Moses, MD, a heroic young Liberian physician, left his family to treat Ebola patients at the height of the epidemic that ravaged his nation;
**Peter Piot, PhD, renowned microbiologist and director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, helped identify the Ebola virus in the 1970s and explains why the global spread of HIV/AIDS was not inevitable;
**Peter Sands, a global financier, explains what the next global health crisis could mean to global markets and geopolitical stability;
**Vanessa Van der Linden, MD, is a pediatric neurologist who sounded the initial alarm about a rise in microcephalic infants, following a Zika outbreak. Van der Linden even used a social media app to help gather data about the disease pattern; and,
**Gwen and Terry Zwanziger, parents of a teen who died of flu complications, now urge other parents to become informed about preventive vaccines and advocate for more money for flu research.

Carole Tomko, general manager and creative director of Mr. Allen’s Vulcan Productions, said, “We believe, and we’ve seen proof, that information is aid. In absence of vaccines, human knowledge paired with behavior modification is the most effective way to slow the spread of contagious diseases. UNSEEN ENEMY is a prime example of how Vulcan Productions combines storytelling and technology to ignite audiences to respond to big challenges. It is our hope that this film will inform and prepare individuals, and global society as a whole, for the very real global health crisis we are facing.”

In addition to the telecasts on CNN, Unseen Enemy will also stream live for subscribers via CNNgo on Friday, April 7 (www.CNN.com/go and via CNNgo apps for AppleTV, Roku, Amazon Fire, and iPad). The film will be available the day after the premiere (Saturday, April 8) via CNNgo. For additional information about the film and other ways to watch it, please visit: www.takesallofus.com.

Bill Gates Warns Of Imminent Threat That Could Rapidly ‘Kill More Than 30 Million’

MUNICH — Recent advances in technology make bioterrorism a greater threat than nuclear warfare – one that could rapidly wipe out 30 million of even hundreds of millions of people around the world, billionaire Bill Gates says.

And the U.S. and other countries, he says, are not prepared.

Speaking to The Telegraph newspaper prior to a conference in German, Gates said it would be possible for terrorists to create a bioweapon that can kill more people than would nuclear weapons.

“It doesn’t take much biology expertise nowadays to assemble a smallpox virus,” Gates said. “Biology is making it way easier to create these things.”

Be Prepared! Store An ‘Emergency Seed Bank’ For A Crisis Garden

Developments in genetic engineering would make it possible for terrorists to engineer a virus capable of creating a pandemic, Gates said.

“With nuclear weapons, you’d think you would probably stop after killing 100 million. Smallpox won’t stop,” he said. “Because the population is naïve, and there are no real preparations. That, if it got out and spread, would be a larger number.”

Bioterrorism can kill far more people than natural epidemics, he said.

“Intentionally caused epidemics, bioterrorism, would be the largest of all,” he said.

It also is possible to reengineer the common flu virus to create a deadly influenza strain capable of causing a pandemic, Gates said. He believes that such a pandemic would spread like wildfire.

He told conference attendees, “Whether it occurs by a quirk of nature or at the hand of a terrorist, epidemiologists say a fast-moving airborne pathogen could kill more than 30 million people in less than a year. And they say there is a reasonable probability the world will experience such an outbreak in the next 10 to 15 years.”

Bill Gates Admits Biological Terrorism Could Kill Hundreds of Millions

Click here to view the original post.

bill gates wikimediaLove him or hate him, there’s definitely one thing that you cannot deny about Bill Gates. He’s a guy who is in the know. Since he made his billions, he has brushed shoulders will all manner of experts and powerful people. That’s why regardless of how you feel about him, you should listen up when he provides a warning. Even if that warning is BS, it’ll tell you a lot about what is on the minds of the most powerful people in the world. Those individuals are after all, well acquainted with each other.

Get prepared for the worst-case scenario with this best-seller!

In this particular instance however, there is no BS. Before speaking at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, he told The Telegraph that biological terrorism is one of the gravest threats we face today, perhaps even more so than nuclear war. He believes that within the next 10-15, it’s likely we’ll face a bioweapon that could kill hundreds of millions of people.

“Natural epidemics can be extremely large. Intentionally caused epidemics, bioterrorism, would be the largest of all.

“With nuclear weapons, you’d think you would probably stop after killing 100million. Smallpox won’t stop. Because the population is naïve, and there are no real preparations. That, if it got out and spread, would be a larger number.”

Advanced Tactical Gas Mask – Are You Ready for a Biological, Nuclear or Chemical Attack?

Of course, engineered bioweapons have been around for a long time. But Bill Gates explained in simple terms why the threat is greater now than ever before.

He said developments in genetic engineering were proceeding at a “mind-blowing rate”. Biological warfare ambitions once limited to a handful of nation states are now open to small groups with limited resources and skills.

He said: “They make it much easier for a non-state person. It doesn’t take much biology expertise nowadays to assemble a smallpox virus. Biology is making it way easier to create these things.”

Gates is absolutely right about that. What used to take massive laboratories, hundreds of researchers, and millions of dollars, could one day be accomplished by a handful of people in a basement with a shoestring budget. We’re rapidly approaching a future where a manufactured virus capable of killing millions and completely upending global civilization, can be created by nearly anyone with the proper skills and a few thousand dollars worth of equipment.

To put that in perspective, there’s only a handful of people in the world who are capable of ordering a nuclear strike on another nation. How many people are there in the world with the kind of skills that would allow them to make a world-ending virus? Tens of thousands of people perhaps. How many people in the world have the means and ability to learn these skills? Perhaps hundreds of thousands. And that number could grow as technological advances make genetic engineering easier. So if hundreds of thousands of people had their finger on the red button, you have to ask yourself, how long would it take before someone pushes it?

This is the world we live in now. A global pandemic engineered by terrorists is practically inevitable, and will likely be seen in our lifetimes. Make sure that you have the right skills and the right gear to see your family through it.

Lead: The Perilous Poison in Your Tap Water

Click here to view the original post.

water_meter_contaminated_lead_drinking

lead_water_infrastructrure_jackson_flintLead is a killer.  To that statement, nobody is surprised.  The shock may be perhaps just how silently lead slips into our systems, not only in terms of its delivery often by aging public utility works or other modes, but also how it becomes absorbed into our human bodily systems.  More often than not, the serious harm of lead poisoning has long taken its toll on the physiology of a person before it exhibits itself overtly via a plethora of symptoms finally manifested in multiple forms of chronic illness.  It is a dastardly manner to get sick or die.

So, as prepper’s intent on surviving this world’s outward disasters in the form of natural and unnatural events, how does one protect against the potential infusions of poisoning by lead sources?  First is to understand it, know it, then begin to practice cautions to guard against it, identify it, and recognize the threats and how to ward off its impact on our health and that of our family especially small children, who are more highly susceptible.

Lead the Toxin

lead_poison_toxic_drinkJust for the sake of basic scientific information the chemical symbol for lead on the chart is Pb.  It is a highly toxic metal considered to be a very strong poison.  It builds up in the human body sometimes not exposing itself in terms of medical symptoms for months or even years.  Children are the most susceptible, because in their very youngest years they are still developing their brains and nervous system which lead attacks. Lead is primarily a neurotoxin in that it mainly targets the nervous system as well as the brain.  It causes a number of maladies and disorders within these physiological systems.  Lead poisoning can also cause blood disorders that can be equally terminal in nature.

The Symptoms of Lead Poisoning

The list of lead poisoning symptoms in the human body is lengthy.  The listing includes abdominal pain, cramps, aggressive behaviors, constipation, sleep disorders, headaches, irritability, loss of appetite, fatigue, high blood pressure, numbness or tingling in the extremities, memory loss, anemia, and kidney dysfunction.

doctor_medical_SWOT-2Additional symptoms often displayed are vomiting, muscle weakness, stumbling, seizures, coma, and encephalopathy, which is a form of confusion often combined with coma. The real trick is to not only to identify these symptoms or illnesses, but to prove the link of these ailments to actual lead poisoning.  Thank goodness for us, this can be proven by a series of appropriate specific blood tests.  In theory then the links to lead poisoning can be shown so that treatment regimens can be prescribed by the medical profession.

Lead Delivery Threats

graveyard_water_towerRemember Flint, Michigan?  I am certain there are numerous other examples of both isolated and widespread excessive concentrations of lead having been delivered to the citizen population via municipal water systems.  Lead poisoning is after all caused by the ingestion of the material into the human body and thereby absorbed into the tissues. Though as we know, lead poisoning can also come from lead paint that was quite common in older residential housing construction as well as huge metropolitan housing complexes, apartment buildings and other dwellings.  Lead was also prevalent in older toys, and other items that children might have put in their mouths over extended periods.  Those sources of lead have now long been cleaned up and removed from society for the most part.  They no longer remain a threat to human health, but drinking water sources are another matter entirely.

Lead sources can also exist within our soils, ground water, and surface waters and are considered environmental contaminates.  These are often quite prevalent in areas where lead is mined or exists within the earth structures naturally. Towns and cities all over the country are under the threat of aging water piping systems. These were constructed of lead pipes and soldiered joints and are still a widespread threat in America.  Rural water systems are not exempt either from lead poisoning.  Threats of lead in water also exists in private wells as well.

Every drinking water source is subject to government regulations regarding the amount of lead registered as PPB’s or parts per billion.  The Federal Government’s EPA has established acceptable standards for lead and all chemicals in drinking water.  These sources are supposed to be tested and certified on a regular basis, but sometimes are not.  Are your sources tested?  Is the water coming from your tap right now safe to drink?  This, you better know.

A Case in Point

sink_water_drinking_contaminationJust last year a municipality near my location, Jackson, Mississippi, experienced issues with elevated lead levels in the city’s drinking water sources.  After extensive sampling of water in 58 city sample sites, 22 per cent of the locations showed lead levels exceeding the accepted Federal levels. The Feds say that a water lead test above 0.015 or 15 ppb exceeds safe levels.  Jackson’s water tested at 0.017 to 0.02 ppb, which is above the Federal standard for safe drinking water.  The source or blame was reported to be the individual home internal samples, not originating from the city’s water distribution network.  And who exactly believes that?  City officials reported that homes built before 1988 were susceptible to lead contaminated water.  Corrosive (city supplied) water can cause the lead in older pipes and commonly soldiered joints to leach out thus causing the excessive high lead levels in the water tests. Action by the city was to correct the inadequate corrosion control in the city water piping systems.  Water chemistry reacts to home pipes and fixtures thus increasing lead levels.  One suspects aging city water systems also contribute to the leaching lead.

It was also noted that the summer heat experienced in the south causes higher lead uptake than in the winter months.  One assumes the external environmental heat raises the temperature in the piping systems thus increasing the temperature of the lead in those pipes furthering the leaching potential into the drinking tap water.

Treatment and Protection

red_cross_first_aid.svgThere are medical treatments for proven lead poisoning caused from ingestion and absorption.  Blood tests can reveal this as well as other medical tests to assess damage to tissue and organs. The human body can be purged of excessive lead levels.  The process is referred to as chelation therapy.  The treatment binds the lead to be evacuated from the body through urination.  One of the medicines used in the chelation process is known as dimercaprol.  Far be it from me to discuss the medical implications and complications of lead poisoning any further.  Consult other medical information, physicians, or medical experts on the subject.

Protection is by working to prevent the ingestion of lead.  There are numerous lead filtering systems available for home use to reduce or eliminate the threat of lead in your drinking water.  Have your water tested professionally or purchase a home water testing kit to verify if lead is in your drinking water.  Just knowing one way or the other may be of some relief.  This should be done on a periodically recommended schedule as things change in water delivery systems, even a home well.

Lead is a noxious substance.  It makes people sick and can eventually kill them.  Part of prepping is to also protect ourselves at home or work or life in addition to being prepared for other SHTF events.  If you have any reason to suspect your drinking water sources are contaminated with lead, then test it, then filter it to be on the safe side.

Always monitor local area news reports and public service reports on municipal water system safety.  Make certain public waters are tested on schedule.

How to Prep For a Quarantine

Click here to view the original post.

All too often, the world is shaken by a new flu bug or the resurgence of an old one. This article caught my eye, as it’s about a mutated version of avian flu H7N2 that was transmitted from a cat to a human, quite a rare occurrence. I also have a long enough memory to recall the Ebola panic just a couple of years ago and shaking my head at the incompetence and poor decision making by those in authority, including the CDC.

The history of Ebola, as detailed in this book, is helpful to know and understand how a deadly virus originates, mutates, and spreads.

With an eye on the future and knowing a little about how quickly certain viruses can spread, I have put into place a number of preps that would see my family through the duration of a widespread outbreak, similar to the ones described in Steve Konkoly’s The Jakarta Pandemic. I know Steve personally and the massive research he put into this book, although a novel, is spot on. Read it to learn even more strategies to keep your family safe.

So, if we can learn anything from past epidemics, we can fully expect to see many more viruses of every kind spread, to one degree or another. And, naturally, there will be even more cases of overwrought hysteria by the media and public officials. Another very concerning development where these viruses are concerned is the flood of immigrants from all parts of the earth whose health issues are unknown. Some carry highly contagious diseases, like tuberculosis, which have previously been very rare here in the U.S.

That said, imagine for just a moment that you and your family have been placed under an official quarantine lasting seven days, fourteen days, or even longer. No one goes to work, no one goes to school. You won’t be eating at restaurants, going to church, the bank, to the movies, or visiting friends. During a quarantine, you will be expected to be self-sufficient for everything except for your utilities.

How will you cope?

Prep now for a quarantine

Preparing for something like this is a good excuse to really get going with your prepping if you’ve slacked off or are pretty new to the idea. Basic prepping for anyone begins with food and water. If you haven’t yet started storing food, here’s a list of some basic foods to begin stocking up. One simple strategy is to begin buying extras of the groceries you use more often and do that each time you go grocery shopping.

If you’re the one who’s sick and possibly very contagious, you’ll need to have on hand a couple of week’s worth of things like canned soup, freeze dried meals, and other simple “open and serve” type meals. Make sure everyone in the family knows where this food is and how to prepare it.

Add essential non-edibles

In addition to food, you’ll need essential non-edibles that are a part of your daily life but also a few items more specific for dealing with a quarantine and pandemic. Those would include soap, laundry detergent, toilet paper, hand sanitizer, bleach, black trash bags (the really heavy duty contractors bags), rubber gloves, N-95 face masks, medical quality disinfecting wipes, and medical disinfectant spray.

An official looking quarantine warning sign would be a good idea. Keep in mind, in a true epidemic or pandemic, you will want to quarantine, even if no one in your household is sick. Hunker down at home and let the virus run its course, far from you and your loved ones. A quarantine sign will be a reminder to outsiders that you’re aware of the health scare and are taking necessary precautions within your 4 walls. At the same time, if any potential intruders are casing your home, that sign could possibly scare them away if they believe the virus is alive and well inside your house.

Now would also be a good time to make sure you have a working thermometer or two, extra bottles of pain reliever, at least one humidifier, diarrheal medicines, and electrolyte drinks or dry mix as detailed in this article. If the virus is affecting the upper respiratory system, the humidifier becomes even more important, along with decongestants, many boxes of tissues (be sure they are immediately disposed of in something like this), lots of water for rehydration, possibly natural remedies you have found helpful (we use Boswellia tablets for coughs). The CDC has a helpful article that details complications from the flu — good to review, take notes, and plan to have on hand supplies to deal with this type of common virus.

Once the quarantine is in place, you will probably not be able to go to a drugstore or pharamacy. In that case, you need to make sure you have an adquate supply of prescription drugs. I’m thinking, in particular, of asthma inhalers, since a number of flu viruses focus on the upper respiratory system. This could be particularly dangerous to an asthmatic.

Depending on how severe the illness, you may need contractor-grade bags to hold refuse, biohazard bags, barf buckets, even gauze (or maxipads) to absorb blood. (Remember pictures of people with tuberculosis coughing up blood in old movies?) In the case of Ebola, the virus was found in bodily secretions of all kinds. That’s where rubber gloves, goggles, disposable Tyvex suits (not as expensive as most people think) and a biohazard clean up kit should be added to your supplies.

Most people don’t give much thought to the pathogens that could be present in vomit, saliva, urine, and feces. They’ll probably grab some paper towels and maybe a bottle of Clorox spray, but an actual biohazard spill, or clean up, kit provides most everything you need to clean up and then dispose of potentially dangerous substances. Speaking of disposal, adding biohazard disposal bags provides you with a safer option for disposal of used medical supplies and even clothing worn by the sick person.

Clothing, towels, and sheets used by the sick person will have to be quarantined away from those used by everyone else. Launder them separately and once the patient has recovered, throw them away. This is true of everything else used by the patient: cups, plates, silverware, etc.

Lest you think it impossible to deal with a deadly virus like Ebola within your home, a young Liberian woman did just that by using low-tech supplies to keep family members alive during the worst of the outbreak:

Every day, several times a day for about two weeks, Fatu put trash bags over her socks and tied them in a knot over her calves. Then she put on a pair of rubber boots and then another set of trash bags over the boots.
She wrapped her hair in a pair of stockings and over that a trash bag. Next she donned a raincoat and four pairs of gloves on each hand, followed by a mask.
It was an arduous and time-consuming process, but Fatu was religious about it, never cutting corners.
You can read her entire story here. If a pandemic becomes so widespread that professional medical care is impossible to access, you can still do quite a lot with basic medical knowledge and the right supplies.

Maintaining sanity within your home

A quarantine will require that everyone stay home. If you have kids or grandkids, then you’ll want to make some plans now to keep them busy and entertained.

First, they should understand basic quarantine rules:

  1. Wash hands after every time they use the restroom.
  2. Immediately dispose of used tissues in a biohazard container.
  3. Stay away from the “sick room” without specific instructions from an adult.
  4. Know to wear protective clothing, including goggles and a face mask, around the sick person.

Very young children who tend to not always follow instructions may need to be kept behind a barricade, such as a kiddie gate.

Having the kids at home 24/7 may drive everyone batty, so it will be worth your while to tuck away a few books on CD, DVDs, books, and even school workbooks. Amazon carries the BrainQuest workbooks for various grades, and at over 300 pages each, surely they’ll keep kids busy for a long while. Also, have plenty of pencils and a good pencil sharpener handy. Puzzle books, board and card games, and indoor physical activity supplies (jump ropes, exercise videos, etc.) can help create a routine that, in turn, helps everyone stay sane. This article provides many more examples of how to set up a shelter-in-place routine.

Finally, if no one is working during the quarantine, it’s possible your income might suffer. Your mortgage company, landlord, and utilities must still be paid right on time, so do a little financial planning to be sure that money is set aside in case the worst does come to pass. As always, it pays to be prepared in more ways than one.

This 7 minute video from Dr. Bones gives more helpful tips for setting up a quarantined home:

Pandemic is an Inevitability

Click here to view the original post.

ebola_virus_virion

ebola_outbreak_in_gulu_municipal_hospitalIn the summer of 2014, the media and state actors panicked over the emergence of an ebola epidemic in Western Africa. The panic was understandable and entirely warranted. After all, ebola kills around 50% of those infected.  Moreover, a cursory examination of ebola’s symptoms are terrifying. Among other things, ebola can induce blood vomiting, severe rash, and liver inflammation. After the disease was reigned in and Western African States declared their health crises under control, health departments around the world began to reflect on their response to the ebola epidemic. Although the ebola epidemic was regionally contained, it was not due to the competence and quick response of state governments. The implications of the lackluster response to the epidemic are far more disturbing than ebola itself. In a globalized world, we are entirely unprepared to quickly address the outbreak of a horrific disease. At this point, a pandemic isn’t a possibility, it is an inevitability.

By D-Ray a contributing author to SHTFBlog & Survival Cache

Say what you will about the politics of Bill Gates but he is right about one thing: we are entirely unprepared to contain and address a potential pandemic. We lack the resources, funding, and state cooperation to adequately address an epidemic that has the potential to become a pandemic. In his Vox interview, Gates mentions an anecdote worth discussing: the 1918 Spanish Flu was almost equal in human devastation to World War II. It seems safe to assume that a pandemic today would only be accelerated by globalization.  An infected individual could board a plane in Dubai and be in New York 15 hours later. We live in a time where we are uniquely vulnerable to pandemic.

Until governments properly fund health programs, it is entirely up to the individual to manage risk. In the case of a lethal, infectious outbreak, the best strategy is to go into isolation. Of course, any period of extended isolation will require a considerable amount of prepping. Most obviously, you will need food and water. Don’t count on clean tap water. In the event of a cataclysmic pandemic, it is likely infrastructure will deteriorate. This will lead to worsened water quality and the potential of infection by waterborne disease. Invest in quality water filtration systems.

Do your emergency plans include contingencies for plague? If they don’t, they should. The probability of such an event, over 50%, certainly warrants preparation. Do not be caught unprepared. What are your plans for pandemic? Will you attempt to bug out or follow a strategy of isolation at home?

First Locally Transmitted Zika Cases Confirmed in the U.S.

Click here to view the original post.

mosquitoFor most of the past year, the mosquito borne Zika virus has been in the news quite a bit, and for good reason. Though it’s not the sort of threat that will end civilization as we know it, Zika can make you really sick, and it can cause birth defects in pregnant women. But more importantly, the virus has a real knack for spreading to human populations that were once considered unlikely hosts.

Originally, Zika mainly preyed on monkeys in Africa and Asia, and it rarely made the leap to humans. But since 2007 the virus has managed to spread across several Pacific islands, and has thoroughly riddled Latin America. It’s estimated that as many as 1.5 million people have been infected in Brazil alone, leading to thousands of cases of babies born with microcephaly.

And over the past few months we’ve been seeing Zika pop up in the United States. For the most part, these cases consisted of people who had been infected in other countries before returning to the US. Unfortunately, that’s all about change.

An outbreak of the Zika virus has been confirmed in Florida, marking the first time the virus has been found to be transmitted via infected mosquitoes within the continental U.S.

The outbreak has infected at least four people, three men and one woman, through local transmission, Florida officials said today.

“This means Florida has become the first state in our nation to have local transmission of the Zika virus,” Florida Gov. Rick Scott said today.

Scott said a small area in northern Miami that is about a square mile in size is the only area where the Zika virus is being transmitted from mosquitoes to people.

“We’re being very aggressive at testing people there we are testing the mosquitoes there and we spraying to make sure it’s contained,” Scott said. He said health officials do not think that the transmission was ongoing.

Now that mosquitoes are carrying the Zika virus in the United States, all bets are off. The government thinks that it can contain Zika with aggressive mosquito control programs, and they may very well succeed if they quickly implement those measures. If they don’t however, then the possibility of becoming infected with the virus may turn into a normal fact of life in America.

That’s because the mosquito that typically carries Zika, the Aedes aegypti, can be found all over the United States. The highest concentrations of this bug are in the deep South, but they can also be found in much of the East Coast and in California. If Zika isn’t contained in Florida, then some of these regions may face the same levels of infection that we’re seeing in Brazil.

Unfortunately, once a virus like this finds a foothold in the environment, it’s pretty much impossible to completely remove it. Even if we did eliminate it, we would still have people carrying the virus, and unwittingly transporting it across borders. It will just keep coming back.

We’re looking at a situation where the authorities will probably be able to contain the virus in small pockets of the South, but will never be rid of it. If say there is an economic collapse of some kind, and the mosquito control programs lose their budget, then Zika is going explode and show up in thousands of communities. In other words, we’re going to be living with the impending threat of a Zika epidemic for a very long time.

Homemade Penicillin To Survive When SHTF

Click here to view the original post.

SVP penicillin

Can you imagine dying from a cut on your finger or a scrape on your knee? How about a respiratory infection or a toothache?

Before the invention of penicillin, the first antibiotic, that could have been your cause of death. If SHTF, access to antibiotics may become limited or impossible. If that happens, it’s important to know how to make antibiotics at home.

To understand the importance of antibiotics, think of it in larger terms. They would have cured the bubonic plague, which was a bacterial infection that took 100 million lives in the 14th century. It was originally caused by infected rats and the fleas that had bitten them, and then bitten a person. Since it was highly contagious, after a person was infected by the rat or flea, the infection then spread from them to other people.

Antibiotics also cure tuberculosis, a highly contagious bacterial disease that still exists today. As a matter of fact, in 2014 alone, more than 9 million people were reported to have it.

All bacterial infections are contagious to some degree, though for some, such as ones that cause an infected tooth or cut, the risk of infection is low because it’s mostly blood born. With other infections, such as tuberculosis, all you have to do is breathe the same air to become infected.

Though we think of the plague as something long behind us, we’re only protected from it because of access to antibiotics. If society collapses, pandemics like it could wreak the same havoc on humanity as they did then.

For thousands of years, Chinese medicine has used fungi to treat skin infections. World-wide, a common treatment for any skin lesion was a poultice made of dirt, which likely contained fungi. For thousands of years, people may not have known WHY something worked; they just knew that it did. Fortunately, we don’t have to depend on such blind faith anymore, so let’s get on with it.

Making penicillin at home is difficult, but possible if you have the right equipment and ingredients. First things first, though: don’t do it unless it’s truly a survival situation.

First, commercial antibiotics have been made by the pros, and they’re a known quantity. Second, making drugs at home, whether they’re legal or illegal, is frowned upon, and distributing them is illegal in most places.

mold

How to Make Penicillin

This is a no-brainer, right? It’s made from bread mold, so you just leave a loaf out, cook up the mold or something, then take it, yes? Umm, no. Penicillin is made from the penicillium fungus found on foods such as some breads and fruits (a moldy cantaloupe played a huge role in initial experiments), but here’s the thing – the bacteria has to be stressed.

So, you have to grow the fungus, then introduce it to stressors before you can use it to make penicillin.

Very important heads up – your culture has to be grown and cultivated in a sterile environment or else other bugs and nasties will contaminate it and cause a Frankin-culture instead of the pure penicillium culture that you need to make antibiotics.

There’s a simple but less reliable way of making penicillin, and then there are steps that you can take to ensure that your end result is penicillin. Warning: though: it’s complicated and requires chemicals that can be quite expensive and have limited shelf lives.

Equipment needed:

  • A gram scale
  • Separatory funnel
  • A 1-liter glass container
  • 750 ml Erlenmeyer flask with a non-absorbent plug
  • A pH test kit
  • 2 pieces of whole wheat bread
  • A cantaloupe rind, more bread, or citrus fruit

Step 1 – Set out the rind, bread or fruit and let it mold (we’ll call this the host). It will go through a few phases. First the mold will be white or gray, then it will turn blue, then a bright blue-green. This is the color you want. Note: if you choose to use bread, it’s best to make it yourself because many bakeries use an ingredient that inhibits mold growth.

Step 2 – Sterilize the flask by putting it in the pressure cooker at 15 lb. for at least 15 minutes, or bake it at 315 degrees F for an hour.

Step 3 – Cut the whole wheat bread (see note in step 1) into 1/2-inch cubes and place them in the flask, careful to be as sterile as you can.

Step 4 – scrape the blue-green mold from the host and place it in with the bread. Again, be as sterile with this step as you can, for instance, boil the tongs that you’re using.

Step 5 – Place the flask in a dark place that’s around 70 degrees and allow it to incubate for 5 days.

At this point, some people may say that you’re done and you can just slap the “penicillin” on the wound or make tea or soup from the bread. We don’t recommend it.

Step 6 – Now it’s going to get complicated. You’re going to need the following ingredients:

  • Lactose Monohydrate 44 gm
  • Corn Starch 25 gm
  • Sodium Nitrate 3 gm
  • Magnesium Sulfate 0.25 gm
  • Potassium Monophosphate 0.50 gm
  • Glucose Monohydrate 2.75 gm
  • Zinc Sulfate 0.044 gm
  • Manganese Sulfate 0.044 gm

Now, according to the instructions that I found (neither of which were actual medical sites because, as usual, there aren’t any actual medical sites that describe how to make anything like this at home), it says to dissolve these in tap water.

After researching, it seems that distilled water would be the best to use for the next step because we want to keep things as sterile as possible and tap water has unknown variables. That’s just my opinion and I’m definitely not a formally trained scientist, so use what you prefer.

Step 7 – So, back to it. Sterilize the 1+ liter container, then dissolve the above ingredients in 500 ml of cold water. Add more cold water to make it a full liter.

Step 8 – Use hydrochloric acid (HCL) to adjust the pH to 5.0-5.5 using your pH test kit.

Step 9 – Sterilize the container along with the solution as described above.

Step 10 – Allow the solution to cool, then add the mold. Incubate it for another 7 days under the same conditions as before. It’s important that the fluid isn’t jostled around so put it where it won’t be moved.

If you’ve done it correctly, you’re almost done. Now it’s time to extract the penicillin that’s infused in the fluid.

Step 11 – Filter the mix through a coffee filter or sterilized cheesecloth.

Step 12 – Adjust the pH of the solution to 2.2 using the HCL and the pH test kit.

Step 13 – Mix with cold ethyl acetate in the separatory funnel and shake vigorously for 30 seconds or so then allow it to separate. The ethyl acetate will be at the bottom.

Step 14 – Chill a beaker in an ice bath and drain the ethyl acetate into it. Add 1 percent potassium acetate and mix it again.

Step 15 – Let the ethyl acetate evaporate off while the solution is still in the beaker. You want plenty of air circulating through.

Step 16 – You have penicillin, assuming you did everything right. Actually the crystals that remain are potassium penicillin and potassium acetate.

This is a pretty scientific process and not something that you should undertake lightly, just to save yourself a few bucks on a prescription.

Because there are so many variables, making your own penicillin is tricky at best. Yes, you may have penicillin but you may have some bad bugs in there, too. But if SHTF, you’re dying from septicemia and you have no other viable options, then it’s not like this is going to make anything worse.

garlic

There are also many other sources of natural antibiotics that you can eat or even use topically, including honey, garlic, oil of oregano, and ginger. Honey is also a great preventive because in addition to killing something that may have gotten into the wound, it also acts as a barrier to keep other bugs out.

If you opt to use this recipe, it may be best to test it on a patch of your skin first to see if you have a reaction then go from there. I would definitely recommend researching the entire process more and to use this article as one piece of the “making your own antibiotics” puzzle.

If you have experience with this, or are a trained medical professional, we would love to hear from you on this topic.

You’re More Likely to Die in a Global Disaster Than a Car Crash

Click here to view the original post.

Nuclear warIf you’re a prepper, then you’re probably inundated with doomsday alarmism on a fairly regular basis. It comes with the territory. While in the process of staying informed on all of the possible threats to civilization, you will inevitably run into fear-mongering claims that the sky is going to fall on our world tomorrow. These outlandish claims not only distract us from genuine threats, but they also make the prepper community look silly and paranoid to mainstream society.

However, there are real threats that we have to worry about. Real threats that the mainstream often thinks are just as crazy as the alarmist threats. Most people look at preppers and think that they’re crazy for believing that civilization could be destroyed by many different threats, leading to the deaths of millions of people, but it’s a very real possibility. It’s worth preparing for.

As a matter of fact, you might be able to scientifically prove that it’s worth preparing for.

See, most people would look at the countless threats to society, both the legitimate ones and the crazy ones, and just shrug their shoulders. “Why bother?” they would say, “why should I worry about this? It’s probably going to kill everyone anyway, and there are already plenty of normal things I have to worry about, like cancer and house fires and car crashes. Why should I spend any time, energy, or money, worrying about a pandemic or a nuclear war, which is far less likely?”

But they should worry about it, because statistically speaking, those catastrophic threats are more likely to effect them than some of the more mundane threats, like the aforementioned car crashes. In fact, a recent study looked at different threats that could lead to the extinction of the human race, and compared their likelihood to the threat of dying in a car crash, and the results were not what you might expect.

In its annual report on “global catastrophic risk,” the nonprofit debuted a startling statistic: Across the span of their lives, the average American is more than five times likelier to die during a human-extinction event than in a car crash.

Partly that’s because the average person will probably not die in an automobile accident. Every year, one in 9,395 people die in a crash; that translates to about a 0.01 percent chance per year. But that chance compounds over the course of a lifetime. At life-long scales, one in 120 Americans die in an accident.

The risk of human extinction due to climate change—or an accidental nuclear war—is much higher than that. The Stern Review, the U.K. government’s premier report on the economics of climate change, estimated a 0.1 percent risk of human extinction every year. That may sound low, but it also adds up when extrapolated to century-scale. The Global Challenges Foundation estimates a 9.5 percent chance of human extinction within the next hundred years.

Somehow I doubt that climate change could come close to extinguishing humanity, but nuclear war is certainly capable wiping most of us out.  And not only is that disaster becoming more likely due to current international tensions, but even during peace time there is always the threat of an accidental nuclear war.

But human extinction level events are hardly the only things we have to worry about.  The Global Challenges Foundation also looked at disasters that could kill 10% or more of the population. Pandemics are the most likely to cause those kinds of deaths, but they also explored some of the threats that aren’t talked about very often, like genetically engineered diseases, artificial intelligence, and geo-engineering.

Nearly all of the most threatening global catastrophic risks were unforeseeable a few decades before they became apparent. Forty years before the discovery of the nuclear bomb, few could have predicted that nuclear weapons would come to be one of the leading global catastrophic risks. Immediately after the Second World War, few could have known that catastrophic climate change, biotechnology, and artificial intelligence would come to pose such a significant threat.

Obviously it’s difficult to put a precise statistic on these existential threats, some of which may or may not even happen. However, when you put the likelihood of all these disasters together, as well as the number casualties they could inflict, it’s clear that they deserve just as much attention as anything else that might threaten your life.

So the next time someone tells you that you’re crazy for preparing yourself for a global disaster, you can confidently assure them that it makes just as much sense as keeping a fire extinguishers in the kitchen, or wearing a seat-belt.

What is your TEOTWAWKI?
Bobby Akart “Prepping for Tomorrow

3-17-16 teotwawkiOn this week’s special episode of the Prepping for Tomorrow program, Author Bobby Akart takes the mic and discusses a topic sure to stir some conversation: WHAT IS YOUR TEOTWAWKI?

The End Of The World As We Know It.
It DOES NOT MEAN the end of the world. This is why we prep. The threats that we face are many. As preppers we want to survive TEOTWAWKI. The collapse events vary in degree, but your preparedness plan should prepare for the worst.

3-17-16 TEOTWAWKI-500x350Whether fantasy, or reality, we all have collapse events that we prepare for. Those who are not preppers still have their collapse event. TEOTWAWKI could be loss of a job for which they maintain a rainy day fund. It could be damage to their home from storms, fire or vandals, for which they carry insurance. For the weakest among us, TEOTWAWKI could mean a zit on their chin before a big date for which they have no makeup concealer.
So WHAT IS YOUR TEOTWAWKI?
In our annual poll on FreedomPreppers.com, the results were as follows:
(1) Economic Collapse
(2) EMP, natural and man-made
(3) Pandemic, BioTerror
(4) Cyber Attack
(5) Natural Disaster
(6) Near Earth Objects
(7) Nuclear War
Is this fear mongering? Is it too conspiratorial? Some say fear is a great motivator. Whatever it takes to lead more people to a preparedness lifestyle, then I am all for it.

The New Biological Threat: The Zika Virus

Click here to view the original post.

Zika virusIt wasn’t all that long ago that the whole world was concerned about the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. Yet except for a small region of Sierra Leone, on the West coast of Africa, the disease has been defeated, at least for this time. The price was heavy, with over 28,000 cases and over 11,000 deaths, but it appears that the world has survived what could easily have been a devastating worldwide pandemic.

But unfortunately that doesn’t mean that we are free from the risk of any disease. No, we are far from it. There is always some sort of disease circling the globe, even if it is nothing more than influenza.

While we look at that as a minor inconvenience here in the United States, the flu kills more people in many years than the Ebola outbreak did. Part of the problem with the flu, is that the virus mutates so much that there are somewhere over 200 principal strains of it.

The current viral scare isn’t so much about influenza or Ebola as it is about a virus most of us haven’t heard of before, Zika. This virus is prevalent throughout Central and South America and according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is spreading explosively.

But Zika doesn’t kill people… at least not directly. In fact, 80% of the people who are infected by the virus will be asymptomatic, never realizing they have received it. Those that do receive it will have mild symptoms, such as: aching joints, fever, rash or red eyes. Muscle pain and headaches are possible as well, although those symptoms can be caused by a host of different things.

So, why is this so important, if only 20% of the people who contract it will even have any symptoms whatsoever and probably not even realize that they’ve been infected? It’s important because the big risk of Zika is that it is dangerous to babies in the womb. It can cause deformities, most especially a birth defect called Microcephaly, which results in a smaller head and a more slowly developing brain. In some cases, it can be deadly for the baby.

Microcephaly comparison

There is also some risk of other diseases caused by this virus, specifically Guillain-Barre disease, a rare autoimmune disorder that can lead to life-threatening paralysis. Please note that the link here is tenuous, as the virus has not been studied enough to ensure definitive analysis of the risk. However, there is enough evidence to give doctors concern. This is serious enough that doctors in Mexico are warning women not to get pregnant. Of course, that may not always be possible, especially in a country where poverty makes birth control difficult.

Zika is transmitted by mosquitoes, although there is some possibility of being transmitted by bodily fluids. There is one known case where transmission was made through sexual contact. Apparently Zika can make its way into male semen, which would then be transmitted to women through sexual relationships.

Because it is transmitted by mosquitoes, the best protection from the virus is to avoid being bitten by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes only bite when they are getting ready to reproduce and then it is only the female mosquito that bites. The rest of the time, they feed off of the nectar of flowers, just like bees.

Female mosquitoes lay their eggs in standing water, so the riskiest place to be is near standing water. That usually means lakes, ponds and swamps, but it can also mean standing water in your backyard, whether there is a hollow where water tends to gather, a swimming pool, an open garbage can, a wheelbarrow or just a bucket that was left outside. They don’t need a lot of water to lay their eggs, so even a cup from a fast-food joint can provide enough water for the female mosquito to lay her eggs.

In order to protect yourself from mosquito bite, the best thing to do is avoid areas with high mosquito populations. If you have any places on your property where there is standing water, eliminate it. In addition, wear long-sleeved clothing and make use of mosquito repellant. The bands that you wear on your wrist work quite well also as a repellant. You can also buy citronella candles, tiki torches and coils that you burn to keep the mosquitoes away. For extra security, don’t just depend on one method of repellent, use various.

These mosquitoes transmit the virus by first biting a person who is infected with it and then biting another person who is uninfected. Apparently the mosquito is a poor host for the virus, so mosquitoes don’t pass the virus on to their offspring. However, considering how many mosquitoes there are in the world and their seemingly insatiable appetite for human blood, that’s already too much.

Detailed information still needs to be deveoped about this virus, but its incubation period appears to be three to seven days and it appears to stay in the person’s system for several weeks. However, the danger time in which they can spread it seems to be limited to the first week. If there is any risk that one might have contracted Zika, they should avoid being around pregnant women for this first week.

The typical strain of mosquito that is the carrier of this virus is the Aedes aegypti. These are currently found in the southern states, along the Gulf coast, so those states are the most likely to contract this disease. To date, the only cases in the United States have been limited to this area.

The CDC has put out a travel warming to avoid countries where the Zika virus is known to be prevalent. This is especially important for pregnant women. This includes:

  • Bolivia
  • Brazil
  • Cape Verde
  • Colombia
  • Ecuador
  • El Salvador
  • French Guiana
  • Guadeloupe
  • Guatemala
  • Guyana
  • Haiti
  • Honduras
  • Martinique
  • Mexico
  • Panama
  • Paraguay
  • Puerto Rico
  • Saint Martin
  • Samoa
  • Suriname
  • Venezuela

As with most viruses, there is little that medical science can do. There are very few anti-viral medicines which have been developed, and those only quite recently. Antibiotics don’t really work for viruses, because they are created to battle bacteria. Your body must defeat the virus itself.

This is why so many vaccines have been developed and why childhood vaccination is so important. The vaccines that are given are less virulent versions of viruses, causing the body’s immune system to create antibodies to fight that particular virus. Then, if the body encounters that virus in the future, the immune system is already programmed to defeat it.

Unfortunately, there have been some problems with these vaccines, especially with the risk of them causing autism. A growing concern about vaccinations and their possible negative side-effects is causing more and more parents to opt out on them.

Fortunately the human body is adapt at defeating viral infections. Our body’s immune system develops antibodies on its own, which will defeat most viruses. The viral infections that cause us serious problem are those which multiply in our bodies faster than our bodies can produce the antibodies. Ebola is the prime example of this.

An individual’s overall health will affect their body’s ability to fight off these infections. Most people who develop symptoms have some other underlying problem, which has weakened their body or their immune system. Even then, the body will overcome this virus if given enough time. About the only thing that the medical community can do is provide supportive care, keeping the rest of the patient healthy, so that the body can concentrate on defeating the virus.

Ultimately, the best protection is protecting yourself from being bitten by mosquitoes. That step alone will help curb the spread of this disease and ensure that you are not part of the process of spreading it. While the risk to you, personally, is quite small; the risk to the next generation is one that we must take seriously.

Should you be worried about Zika virus?
Cat Ellis “Herbal Prepper Live

Zika virusYou may have heard that the World Health Organization (WHO) has described the Zika virus as ”spreading explosively”. Does this mean that the Zika virus is the next big pandemic? Should you be worried about the Zika virus?

1-31-16 Microcephaly-babyZika virus was once an obscure, rare flavivirus from Uganda. Spread by certain types of mosquitoes, which are also responsible for spreading malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. Zika virus can cause micro-encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). This can result in infants which are born with abnormally small heads if their mothers contracted the virus while pregnant. The condition is permanent and often fatal.

This episode of Herbal Prepper Live will break down the origins, risk factors, transmission, and the potential regions into which the Zika virus may spread. Any herbal protocol for this virus would be pure speculation, and I wouldn’t want to rely on that.

1-31-16 3280However, mosquito control is good general disease control, and there are effective herbal and essential oil options for mosquito repellents. Since we will soon be in the gardens again, we will talk about herbs to plant around doors, under windows, near porches, and elsewhere around your garden to minimize mosquitoes.

Zika is responsible for the record number of cases of micro-encephalitis it is causing in Brazil. The Brazilian government has even suggested that women not get pregnant for a few years until the outbreak is expected to end. There is currently no travel advisory for the general population. The only recommendation currently in effect is for pregnant women avoid traveling to areas with Zika virus.

However, this is also the first time that there are cases of adults also dying of Zika. Similar to what was seen with the Middle Eastern Respiratory Virus (MERS), mortality is mostly associated with pre-existing conditions, but not all cases. Clearly, there is a lot to discuss regarding the virus.

Dealing With Diseases After SHTF

Click here to view the original post.

diseases after SHTF

Apart from preparing, planning and thinking for an SHTF situation, have you ever wondered what the most likely threat is for people? As common sense suggests, when people know a SHTF situation is eminent today or sometime soon, they will go mad stocking food and water and prepare survival tools and kits. But there is something more than this – diseases after SHTF. Even the most prepared survivalists can be faced with illness in the aftermath of disaster.

Doctors are the people who first come into our minds when it comes to any condition like this, but in a disaster situation, the doctors would be facing the same survival challenges and after all they won’t be leaving their families.

In the aftermath of disaster, people might fear for starvation the most, which can lead to death, but in actuality the real reason that increases the probability of mass deaths is even worse. Can you imagine a situation where you have prepared enough for your survival and have a very-well planned strategy for defense too? The tools, the stocked food and water, everything is enough to keep you alive – starvation does not seem crucial here. If you have thought over it, the bigger threat is of contracting diseases after SHTF!

It is likely that people might not put much thought into it so here are the details that will help you keep aware of and prepare for disease after SHTF.

Common Sources Of Diseases After SHTF

You made it this far- now learn how to protect your loved ones from diseases after SHTF. Image via Mitch Barrie on flickr.

Water Sanitation And Poor Hygiene

The clean drinking and tap water that we use in our daily lives to fulfill human requirements is taken for granted by everyone. Imagine a situation where public water supplies cease to function – inevitably, there will be a rise in deadly disease then.

diseases after SHTF

Without purification methods, improvised water supplies can easily become contaminated. Image via SuSanA Secretariat on flickr.

When proper sanction becomes no longer a simple thing, here is when you should fear for lives. Water supplies will be contaminated in a SHTF situation causing an outbreak of typhoid, diarrhea, cholera, hepatitis A, gastroenteritis and diphtheria. People might not know what to do then and this is one of the reasons why you are advised to keep a water purifier kit.

diseases after SHTF

Flooding poses an even greater risk to sanitation.

Diseases Caused By Insects

The best place to breed for insects is dirty and contaminated water and what can be better for them when you are facing SHTF disasters. I guess they would be the least bothered creatures on Earth then. Sounds funny, but is as dangerous as threatening the people’s lives.

diseases after SHTF

Small but deadly! Mosquitos are responsible for spreading severe diseases, such as Malaria and West Nile Virus.

Mosquitos, bugs, fleas, ticks, midges, rats and flies – almost like non-existent creatures could play the role of being the biggest creatures in a SHTF disaster by making you sick and that too, to such a severe extent that if not treated properly, people may die! Malaria, Lyme’s disease, Murine typhus, West Nile Virus and other contagious and life-threatening diseases spread like fire in the woods.

diseases after SHTF

Avoid camping near swamps and marshes, if possible. These areas attract insects.

It is important to have the knowledge beforehand and learn to keep clean drinking water and food. An insect repellant, non-prescribed anti-biotic medicines and hygiene accessories are therefore recommended to keep in a kit of emergency survival supplies. In areas of high risk for insect-borne diseases, be sure to include a mosquito net in your bug-out bag.

diseases after SHTF

Respiratory Diseases And Infections

Respiratory infections and diseases are a major concern as they spread really quickly in disastrous situations. Cold, cough, flu and sore throat can still be treated through non-prescribed medicines (recommended to keep in a first-aid kit) however it becomes more threatening as there are certain bacteria and viruses that are drug-resistant. In a situation where all you can do is carry your own self safely; non-prescribed medicines will be of no use and won’t cure them.

diseases after SHTF

The flu virus is highly contagious and difficult to contain when living in close quarters.

These bacteria and viruses cause upper respiratory tract diseases such as bacterial pneumonia. It could be a major reason for massive death –imagine the unlimited food and water you’ve stocked, would it be of any help? Of course not, so is the reason why diseases are a bigger concern in the aftermath of SHTF.

diseases after SHTF

Dealing with diseases after SHTF will be challenging without access to modern medicine.

When fighting for their survival, survivalists live in groups with their families that increase the chances of transmission of air-borne diseases and infections from one person to another. Infants, elderly, and immune-deficient people are more susceptible to catching infections. The simplest example can be, you cough and then use the water-bucket that is shared, the other person uses it and here’s how he catches the disease.

diseases after SHTF

Take extra care to prevent infants from exposure to illness and disease.

Practicing good hygiene, like covering your cough, washing hands frequently, and avoiding shared utensils whenever possible will help reduce the spread of respiratory viruses. If a member of your group becomes ill with a respiratory infection, it is best that they rest and limit interactions with others until they recover.

diseases after SHTF

Ah-choo! Catch your sneeze or cough to minimize airborne pathogens.

Wounds And Infections

In a SHTF scenario, it gets extremely crucial to take proper care of wounds and infections as tetanus shots and antibiotic medicines aren’t available. To clean them, you of course won’t be able to rely on other sources of water too being unsure about its contamination. Infections lead to conditions like sepsis and gangrene.

diseases after SHTF

One thing you can prepare is a well-stocked first aid kit for tending to injuries.

Prevention is better than cure and here would be the time to practically implement it. A simple wound in such a situation can lead to long-term disabilities, chronic wounds, infections in bone and unfortunately Death! Having knowledge and learning medical skills before such disastrous situations can help survivalists save their lives. Learning about medical emergencies, cleaning and sterilization will also help prevent infections.

diseases after SHTF

Important essentials for cleaning and bandaging wounds.

In order to be able to address wounds and injuries, you will need a well-stocked first aid kit. It should include bandages, antiseptic, and tools to help you quickly tend to injuries and prevent infections. For help with planning your first aid kit, CLICK HERE.

Food-Borne Diseases

While food plays an important role in your survival, it can also be a source for harmful bacterial infections. It is better to skip a meal and continue to look for food than to consume something that is questionable. Food-borne diseases can be deadly, especially without access to immediate medical intervention.

Foods that come from animal sources, such meat, eggs, and dairy products, may be contaminated with Salmonella bacteria. Also, cross-contamination can occur with other foods, such as produce. In a survival situation where sanitation is compromised, it can be difficult to maintain cleanliness and thoroughness when cooking. Do not consume undercooked meat or eggs! The resulting infection can cause fever, diarrhea, and cramps lasting several days. Depending on the person’s health, this can become very severe.

Another danger may be lurking in your pantry. Food-borne botulism can be contracted from canned foods that are not processed properly. Untreated, botulism can progress into paralysis of the arms, legs, torso, and even respiratory muscles. To help prevent contracting this disease, boil canned foods for ten minutes before consuming. For more information on canning safety, CLICK HERE.

Conclusion

Your strategy for health is a major component of your survival. Dealing with diseases after SHTF requires planning ahead by educating yourself about disease prevention and treatment. Be aware of sources of contamination. Know how to recognize symptoms and do not dismiss them – even mild symptoms can be a sign of a more serious problem, especially when resources are limited. BOOK REVIEW: “Finest Hour (The Survivalist Book 7)” by Arthur Bradley

Click here to view the original post.

Today, it’s time to review “Finest Hour (The Survivalist Book 7)” by Arthur Bradley (Kindle edition). I had previously thought that this was going to be the final book in the series, and I have to say that I was delighted to discover there is going to be a 7th installment at some point in the future. Needless to say, I’ve come to really enjoy this series.

Picking up literally the morning after the final moments of the previous novel in the series, this one involves the characters beginning the quests they resolved to undertake to attempt to right all of the wrongs that have been…

Hope You Weren’t Banking on Tamiflu to Save You During a Pandemic

… because, if so, you might want to rethink that strategy. Long touted as a big weapon in the human arsenal for fighting pandemic influenza, this antiviral is supposed to significantly lessen the symptoms/the amount of time symptoms are suffered by an infected person. In fact, several major governments – including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security – have supplies of the drug stockpiled in the event we are hit by another worldwide pandemic (which is actually an eventual statistical certainty to which we have to look forward).

Unfortunately, a new study conducted by a not-for-profit…

MERS Update Warning: Potential for global outbreak high ahead of Hajj Pilgrimage

When the topic of preparedness is the focus of the conversation, the inevitable question from everyone we talk to is “What are you afraid of?” or “What worries you most?”  Not always in an attacking manner.  Some folks are genuinely interested.  Our answer is always much the same.  We do not live in fear of anything because we have a plan supported by skill sets, knowledge and personal capital.  That doesn’t make us some house of bad asses, it just means that we have cultivated a confidence over the years based on experience that we will face whatever comes head on and we have every confidence that we will bear it and beat it.  With that said, there are things in the background that act as motivators for us to take steps to prepare that go beyond all of the common sense reasons (severe weather, unexpected job loss, an injury that puts you on the shelf for a while, etc) we believe it is necessary to embrace a lifestyle of preparedness.  In no particular order, these are the things my wife and I view as “big bad” reasons to practice preparedness as a family:

Pandemic – It has happened before and it will happen again.  Don’t take it from me, just check this outHere’s another.  For me, this was probably the first “bigger picture” threat that really grabbed my attention.

IMAG1418Resource depletion (societal strains and impacts) – Whether it’s the rampant loss of quality top soils, access to clean water, oil (the master resource) or any of the others, the resources that are vital to the stability and continuation of our civilization are becoming increasingly more difficult to procure which is straining our society and it’s people and there is a constant creeping tension surrounding this fact.  This stark reality surrounds us and you don’t have to look very hard to see cracks in the foundation of our republic already appearing.

EMP (Electromagnetic pulse) or CME (Coronal Mass Ejection) -The threat of electromagnetic pulse (EMP) is not a new one, but it has become clear that deploying an EMP weapon over the continental United States would rank among the primary goals of any of those engaging in state sponsored terrorism due to the projected devastating impacts of such an attack.  A Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) could also spell disaster for our aging power grid here in the US.  Like a pandemic, it’s happened before and our cosmic address places us in the shooting gallery so it’s no surprise that we have had a few near misses and close calls. We can all sleep soundly knowing that there is a 12% chance that we will find ourselves directly in the firing line of a massive solar flare and resulting coronal mass ejection by 2020.

8 Reference Works for Living Without Doctors

First aid training and resources are readily available for a number of medical emergencies. These skills and resources are focused on mitigating harm and keeping someone alive long enough to get them to professional medical care. But what if there is no professional medical care available? What if it is too dangerous or will take too long to get to professional medical treatment? What do you need to know–what do you need to do–to treat someone who may never see a doctor?

wound

Fortunately for anyone preparing for this kind of scenario, for many people in this day and age this is already a fact of life. Aid workers and missionaries in remote parts of the world, for example, may find themselves dealing with all kinds of medical conditions in places with not enough medical professionals and not enough medical supplies and equipment. Ships’ crews on the open sea are also interested in treating medical conditions that would send one to Urgent Care back on dry land. Here is a short list of some of the resources developed for such people, plus some references used by medical professionals:

Operations Planning for Your Family

Click here to view the original post.

Due to the nature of survival it is wise to prepare for what to do in case someone becomes incapacitated, missing or leaves for some reason, even if the event or absence is only temporary.  A disruption event can happen at any time; it doesn’t matter where everyone is or what they are doing.

To ensure that the family can come together and continue to operate you will want to do some key tasks ahead of time.

First we want to understand the different types of event that could happen and how they relate to your situation at the time. A tornado, for instance, is a very possible event that will drastically affect a relatively small number of people at one time and usually occurs with predictable severe weather. Often the tornado strikes during the day when everyone is separated, but not always. As for an event from the complete other end of the spectrum, a massive grid down power outage that keeps a city without electricity for many days, weeks or months will affect large numbers of people and cause all sorts of societal problems and could happen at anytime.

In either of these scenarios there is one thing in common, you and your family.  You have already stocked and planned for what to do in case of disaster, but have you planned on what exactly to do if someone is lost or incapacitated? What if that person, or even you, are the only one who knows how to survive, operate a well pump, flip a breaker, shoot a weapon safely, access a bank account, contact relatives, etc. In short, are you or the kids prepared to take over the leadership position in case the worst happens?

In the case of a large scale event you may have to bug out or you may even have people coming to you. In a survival group there are usually several people with key skills, but for a small family, this may not always be the case. In a complex survival situation it will be very difficult to know and do everything by yourself so why not plan ahead so you can keep operating if such a time comes.

Top 5 reasons you will need to consider a continuity or succession plan:

    • A key person is delayed by  disaster conditions or travel restrictions
    • Someone is injured, ill, lost or killed along the way
    • Someone cannot participate because of their own lack of planning
    • Not able to communicate for some reason leaving everyone else in the dark
    • Perhaps a key person just chose to not participate for some reason

How do we get started?

The first steps are to identify who is key to the plan and identify an alternate person who is not in the primary member’s traveling party or immediate family. This is to give the best chance of the alternate showing up and staying with the survival group, family or community. The alternate should be able to perform the duties of the primary and be trained properly. Importantly, the alternate must be made aware of his/her title as alternate, and must voluntarily accept the assignment. At this point the alternate will provide all possible contact info to include an out of area relay contact so that there is the best chance of communication.

*Important tip: Anytime an out of area contact is to be used as a relay point for information, the information relay person must be made aware of the arrangement and be ready to answer calls from unusual numbers.

Next is to identify key operations. These are tasks or processes that must be done to provide for the safety and welfare of the family or survival group in an emergency.

Key operations may include:

  • Activating the emergency plan

  • Collecting everyone from work, school, shopping or other travels

  • Security: protecting everyone and everything from loss or destruction at all times

  • Food and water provisions to keep everyone going strong for the predetermined period of time. i.e. 3 days, 3 months, 1 year, etc.

  • Sheltering: keeping everyone out of the elements

  • Energy for warmth, power or communications

  • Transportation to re-position resources or evacuation

  • Medical response to injuries and safety oversight during emergency activities

  • Site safety such as immediate response to fire, flood, wind events, dangerous people

  • Communication with each other and outside world. Use your Commo Plan to stay in contact and set up a relay contact that is far away from the event location

  • Evacuation/convoy in case of rapid displacement

But what about the smaller disasters?

Not every event is the coming apocalypse, what happens if a family member is in a car accident? Your wallet gets lost, you must hurry to a family emergency out of town for several days. Who will hold down the fort, feed the kids and pay the bills?

This is when your Family Contingency Binder (FCB) will prove to be a lifesaver, This is a notebook that contains all of your operational information from critical documents such as birth certificates to credit cards to insurance policies and vehicle titles.

The FCB also has your emergency plans, maps to important places, passwords to everything, medical information, wills and trusts, Powers of Attorney for someone to handle your affairs and those of your children and actual written phone numbers to everyone important in your life (just in case you lost your cell phone too).

Just as with planning for alternate key personnel, alternate methods to achieve key operations should be defined, documented and communicated to all personnel within the group or family, not just those involved in those operations. Resilience depends on a group wide effort and everyone should know what is supposed to happen and how it should get done, this way people can adapt as needed and remain close to any defined objectives or wishes. Be sure to keep all of this information secure and under lock and key but don’t forget to make sure that several people know how to access it in an emergency.

If a sudden emergency strikes and you must evacuate quickly, try to take your binder, it will have everything you need to recover from a burned out home, prove who you are and get your life back on track.

When you take some time to prepare the people in your life as well as the stuff on the shelf you will begin to see that you may need less stuff. Share your plans and expectations with the people around you so they can be there when you need them the most and have them do the same. Give everyone the tools they would need to stand in for you if something happens, because something always happens.
