Surprise: Most Americans (And Most African-Americans) Oppose Removing Confederate Monuments

A solid majority of Americans favor leaving monuments to Confederate leaders where they are, according to a series of new polls.

One survey, by The Huffington Post/YouGov, found that only 29 percent of Americans want them removed.

“Americans are generally unsupportive of attempts to remove memorials honoring Confederate leaders,” Ariel Edwards-Levy of The Huffington Post wrote.

A separate survey even found that a plurality of African-Americans opposed their removal.

Among highlights of recent surveys:

  • 62 percent of adults in a National Public Radio (NPR)/Marist survey favored keeping Confederate monuments. The same survey found that 27 percent of Americans supported removal.
  • 54 percent of those surveyed by Reuters/Ispos opposed statue removal. That survey found 27 percent of Americans wanted the monuments removed.
  • 52 percent of respondents to a Morning Consult/Politico poll opposed removing monuments. Twenty-six percent wanted the monuments removed.
  • 44 percent of African-Americans opposed removal of Confederate statues, an NPR/PBS News Hour/Marist Poll Forty percent wanted them removed.

Even some prominent Democrats oppose removal of Confederate statues and symbols, National Review writer John Fund pointed out.

“I think it is too costly to refight the Civil War. We have paid too great a price in trying to bring people together,” former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young told The Atlanta Journal Constitution. “I personally feel that we made a mistake in fighting over the Confederate flag here in Georgia. Or that that was an answer to the problem of the death of nine people — to take down the Confederate flag in South Carolina. I am always interested in substance over symbols. If the truth be known, we’ve had as much agony — but also glory — under the United States flag. That flew over segregated America. It flew over slavery.”

Survey Of Convicts Confirms Everything You Suspected About Gun Control

Survey Of Convicts Confirms Everything You Suspected About Gun Control

HOUSTON — Convicted murderers were well aware of gun laws they used to commit their crimes but still had no problem getting their hands on weapons, according to a survey of Texas inmates by a Houston television station.

KTRK in Houston sent surveys to every prisoner in Harris County who used a gun to kill someone since 2014.

Incredibly, 63 percent of the guns were stolen, 25 percent were bought illegally off the street, and 13 percent were bought in stores. Ninety percent of those who had a gun were legally prohibited from buying one.

“The convicted killers … were all well aware of the gun laws,” the ABC 13 report found. “Many were previously convicted and knew they wouldn’t pass federally mandated background checks. Others suggested they would never put a family member in a position to buy a gun for them since the penalty for that so-called ‘straw purchase’ is severe.”

Tod Oberg, a reporter at ABC 13, interviewed some of the prisoners in-person.

“I can buy a gun today,” said Rodney Rachal, who is serving a life sentence for murder.

“How fast?” Oberg asked.

“As fast as I can follow the traffic to the drug dealers, they’ll have some for sale,” Rachal said.

Prisoner Cedric Jones said he regrets his crime – and says the only thing that could have saved him was a job. He sold drugs to make money for his family

“By me having felonies, it’s hard getting a job,” Jones, who was a convict at age 19, told the TV station. “I did try to get a job a couple of times. I tried to go to school for fixing motorcycles because I had felonies. So, what am I supposed to do? Let my kids starve?”

If he had had a regular 9-to-5 job, Jones said, his life “would be completely different.”

“I would love to have a job,” he said. “… I probably wouldn’t be in jail. Having a job would have changed it a lot.”

A Shocking Percentage Of Americans Want Gun Owners And Christians To Register With The GovernmentSignificant numbers of Americans want citizens to register with the government for such factors as gun ownership and faith, a new poll from YouGov indicates.

The polling service asked 1,000 adults whether they believed various groups should have to register.

The question was phrased simply: “Would you support or oppose a national registry which requires the following groups of people to register with the government and provide their home address?”

Highlights of the disturbing survey include:

  • More than half of Americans, 53 percent, want a national registry of gun owners. That includes 68 percent of Democrats and 37 percent of Republicans.
  • 21 percent of Americans support the idea of registering Christians. Breaking it down by parties, 27 percent of Democrats and 21 percent of Republicans back such an idea.
  • 19 percent of Americans want Jews to register. That includes 27 percent of Democrats and 18 percent of Republicans.
  • 40 percent of Americans support the idea of a national registry for Muslims. The party breakdown: 41 percent of Democrats and 49 percent of Republicans.

YouGov did not ask Americans whether atheists and other non-believers should be registered. The survey was conducted Nov. 20-23.
