5 Winter Survival Items EVERYONE Should Store In Their Vehicle

Click here to view the original post.
5 Winter Survival Items EVERYONE Should Store In Their Vehicle

In an earlier post this winter, I wrote about three survival gadgets that everyone should store in their vehicles during the coldest months of the year. Let’s now turn to the basics.

Here are five often-forgotten items that everyone should store in their car, truck or SUV during winter:

5. Light sources.

Basically, the nightmare scenario that we’re preparing for is the most commonly experienced during the winter.

The cold has a way of freezing the life out of our car batteries (jumper cables being a given addition to this list). The cold also tends to result in the loss of friction – that is, the force of physics that cars depend on to keep the wheels on the road. Hence is why I recommend adding a work lantern with an attached magnet. That way, you won’t be fumbling in the long winter’s night while trying to get your car back on the road again.

And in the event that there’s no possible way of driving out of that snow bank, I’d also recommend a tactical flashlight with SOS signaling capabilities.

4. First aid.

Simply put, one sheet of ice can put us in the ER on a normal day. Besides, in the event that you find yourself in a survival situation, the events leading up to such a scenario are often the same ones that make a first-aid kit necessary in the first place (such as a black-ice-caused car accident).

3. Emergency communication.

Let’s play out a particular scenario for a moment…

Goofy Tiny Gadget Can Jump-Start Your Car — And Charge Your Smartphone!

Pretend your vehicle has slid into a ditch, but you also happen to be on a road that tends not to see much traffic — especially in this weather. And so, you sit in your (now stationary) metal shelter with wheels, wondering what to do next. Of course, you’d phone for help, but you’ve got a grand total of zero bars to work with, so that’s out of the question. Should you walk for help? How low will temps reach tonight? Will this lull in snowfall hold until you make it to assistance?

These gaps in weather intelligence info can be alleviated with a simple pocket weather radio, since you’d be able to hear real-time weather broadcasts as the storm unfolds.

5 Winter Survival Items EVERYONE Should Store In Their Vehicle

I’d also recommend keeping at least a mini CB radio on hand, which can run on the adapter to a cigarette lighter power supply. Not only could you tune in to CH9 (emergency channel), but you’d even be able to communicate to nearby CB operators … who might just be kind enough to alert emergency personnel to your present predicament. At which point, set your flashlight to SOS-mode and await the cavalry.

2. Chains, n’ such.

Perhaps one of THE most obvious additions to your winter emergency vehicle stash would be the appropriately sized cables/chains for your tires. At least in my own experience, I’ve seen a Saturn SL2 rip through two feet of road powder with chains, while the 4×4 Jeep I was in remained stuck. A humbling experience, I do admit.

I’d also recommend adding other tire-traction items, such as traction mats. You also might want to purchase a traction “boot,” which are these ingenious tabs that clamp to the wheel and dig into the snow like a cleat.

1. Things that make you warm.

Last (and certainly not least), make sure you’ve got a change of the warmest possible clothing you own (that you don’t mind storing in your vehicle indefinitely and you use only for emergencies). In this instance, you might not necessarily have to concern yourself with moisture and water resistance, since you’ll be staying inside the vehicle. However, I would still NOT consider cotton materials an option. Cotton is just horrible for winter apparel, since even the slightest amount of sweating can result in chills … and chills are a precursor to hypothermia. I’d recommend wool materials. Quite frankly, I will always recommend wool (or smart fleece.)

And while we’re at it, you might as well do your due diligence and equip your ride with a polar fleece thermal blanket. If you’re going to be stuck inside a cold metal box, this will at least keep your body heat to yourself.

What would you add to our list? Share your tips in the section below:

Self-defense and staying fed!
Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Self-defense and staying fedOver the last two weeks we have talked about firearms and alternatives to fire arms, this week we will talk about my personal selections when it comes to a long term self reliance kit. There will be firearms, traps and all kinds of goodies in the kit to keep you fed. I touched on this topic a few months ago when I talked about building a long-term self-reliance pack but this week I wanted to focus on the items that are specifically for self-defense or getting food.

3-22-16 h_beaverThese are my food getting preferred kit items for a multi-week trip into the back woods:
1) Single shot 12 gauge shotgun with chamber adapters (18- 12 ga rounds on the gun, 50- 22 lr rounds on the gun, bottle of primers, powder horn,
2) Taurus Tracker 44 Magnum five shot or a Semi-Auto revolver if dealing with a human threat and not animal predators
3) ~4” Fixed blade knife
4) Spear Point
5) Snare Wire
6) #12 and #36 Bank Line
7) Trapping Card
8) Two Yo Yo Spring Snare
9) Two foot traps
10) Three Body Traps
11) Gill Net
12) Small fishing kit

These are my preferred defensive weapons in the event of a civil breakdown or TEOTWAWKI:
1) AR platform Pistol (AK or SBAR OR Carbine if you prefer) with haversack full of magazines with varying ammunition (sling carry)
2) Long Range Rifle AR-10 is my personal choice (pack carry)
3) Defensive pistol I prefer 45ACP (belt holster or drop leg with knife)
4) Fixed blade knife
5) Baton

3-22-16 FB_IMG_1457483848003As you can see there are a major differences between being self-reliant in a deep wilderness environment and dealing with hostile human threats. There are all kinds of choices out there and I have detailed them over the last two weeks to the best of my ability but these are the two “kits” I would settle on given the particular situation. I look forward to your feedback and what your various kits would be made up from.

The Ultimate Survival Kit!

Click here to view the original post.
The Ultimate Survival Kit

The Ultimate Survival Kit prepared-school safety“Be prepared for the worst,” this is what we hear every day but look around- are you really prepared? If tomorrow a disaster strikes or a war breaks out, is your survival plan set? Most of us do not even know where to begin with! Preparing for the worst is very scary. Start with the basics then; make your own survival kit. You never know how seconds can change your life, hence start preparing.

Survival is only possible when you know you can handle yourself in such consequences. When you believe in yourself. This belief comes from the mental and physical preparation. How to mentally prepare yourself, start with the following:

  • To make sure you are capable enough start with some form of physical exercise and build it up to strength training. Jog and run so that your stamina can be built for such instances.
  • Self-defense is very important! Join martial arts classes where you can learn to fight. This will ensure that you can take care of yourself when things go wrong.
  • Moreover, learn to use a weapon. You may have to kill in order to protect yourself, thus master the art of using pocket knives and guns so that you do not feel weak in the moment.
  • Learn basics such as how to light a fire, how to set tents, how to hunt, how to fish, how to swim etc. These basics will give you confidence to survive what is coming forth towards you.
  • Survival also requires a calm mind, rationale thinking and quick decision making. Meditation helps a person to stay calm and composed and to think clearly. Try meditating twice or thrice a week so that you can practice the same when things get stressful.

While you are preparing yourself, start making a survival kit too! Survival pushes a person out of their comfort zone thus you cannot carry everything you own. Focus on what you need rather than what you want. The basic human needs to survive are food, water, clothing, shelter, weapons and medicine, this is how you will categorize the items that will make it to your survival kit.

Food: Make a food storage where food can be stored. Your survival kit should also have basic food supplies, and seasonings so that you can survive at least two weeks. Make sure that the food being stored has time to expire. Items such as vegetable powders, fruit powders, and dried food are available in the market. These products offer to be essentials during a survival situation. Moreover, carry match sticks to light fire, lighters, fishing rods and knives. You might have to hunt, set traps or learn about gathering, hence your survival kit should include products such as knives, wires, guns, that can help you with these acts.

3-18-16 2Water: Water is the basis of human survival. Human beings cannot survive three days without water. Your survival kit should include empty vessels and bottles that can store water for you. Keep extra water stored in your home fridges that can be picked and tossed in the kit when time comes. Also, keep water purification tablets in your survival kit as they can be helpful when you do not have a source of clean water around you.

Clothing: Having proper clothing on you is very essential. You cannot survive a cold winter night in a basic tee shirt! For your survival kit, your clothing has to be comfortable yet protective. Do not pack everything in your survival kit. Study the general climate of the region you reside in and pack clothes accordingly. For nights, keep some warm clothing because you never know how temperatures can change. Moreover, your shoes are very important! The right shoes can take you towards surviving. Shoes should be easy to walk in, protect you from the rain and sun and survive rough walks, wear and tear and different terrains. A good pair of sneakers and socks can do the trick.

3-4-16 fireShelter: Where would you survive is a question worth pondering over. Planning a shelter is very important. Mark out places where you can head to when things go wrong. If you think your home is your shelter place then you have an advantage- added space for more storage. Assign areas in your neighborhood that can serve as a shelter. However, for survival kit purposes, carry maps, compass, tents and sleeping bags so that you can seek shelter anywhere!

First Aid Kit: A survival kit without a first aid box? That is just incomplete. Make sure your survival gear has a first aid kit that includes your everyday medication, band aids, gauze, cotton, antiseptics, antibiotics, pain killers, anti-allergies and other such over the counter drugs that you would need.

Other Essentials: When you carry that survival kit and walk out of your house, your home, to survive you would be filled with mixed emotions. There are loads of memories and mixed emotions that would be over whelming you. Furthermore, the question that you will keep asking yourself, “will I come back to all of this again.” When these feelings take over, one feels the need to carry everything with them. Do not make that mistake. Essentials in your survival kit should include sanitizers, tooth brush, tooth paste, toilet paper, extra cash, batteries and torch.

Throughout centuries we as humans have survived. Survival is what has evolved mankind and put us where we are. Survival is only possible if you are prepared. Hence do not take that lightly and start your survival preparation before it is too late!

Alternatives to Firearms the Other Weapons!
Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Firearms The AlternativesLast week we had an in depth discussion of firearms selection and this week we talk about some alternatives for our friends in countries not as firearm friendly, those in the dreaded CA or NY or those who simply are not able to get access to a firearm or chose to go another way.

We start the night talking about projectile weapons and end with more of a hand-to-hand style of combat weapon. Within each category of weapons I have researched several products which I have either used or believe to be an effective means of self-defense or means of securing game. We talk about air guns, blow guns, sling shots, spears, staff, nun-chucks, atlatl, bola, baton, explosives, percussion devices, sling, cross bows , sai, swords, nun chaku, trident, club, knife, machete, potato gun, throwing stick, boomerang, spear, tomahawk, axe, caltrop, throwing star, throwing knives, hammer, and maybe a few more varieties.

Also discussed, passive defensive systems (A.K.A. traps) with the understanding that many of these are illegal to put into practice unless there is a total breakdown of society. Many of these defensive implements were perfected by the North Koreans and Vietnamese and can be crafted with little more than a knife, cordage and a little common sense.

Surviving the first 72 hours!
DJ Cooper “SurvivingDystopia

Surviving the first 72 hoursWe are told over and over again to have a 72 hour bag.  This bag will help get you home or just get you through those first 3 days. Thinking back to previous shows and to even the page for this show.  There is a quote by Alfred Henry Lewis who said, “There are only 9 meals between mankind and anarchy.”  Again the first 72 hours being the critical thought here.  What is it about those 72 hours that can make or break your chances for survival?

3-9-16 fireIn any disaster the first 72 hours is likely the most critical time.  The things you do and steps you take could determine how or even if you survive.  According to FEMA you need to make sure you have the following things: Food, Water, First aide, Fire Extinguisher, Flashlight, A means to cook, Radio, Meds, Tools and stuff for your pets

The Red Cross pretty much agrees, that you should expect the unexpected.

Whether you stay in place or bug out you need to take steps to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones.  Every disaster is different and each could change the things you do in those 72 hours.

#1 thing to consider…

3-9-16 evacuationAFTER disaster strikes is NOT the time to try and prepare. Although afterwards there are steps you should take and things you should do.  Disasters are not generally a planned event and acting quickly without losing focus will be critical.  Being prepared by definition means to have done so BEFORE.

Two things you need to consider first and foremost:

#1 Get out of danger… this may mean bugging out, or getting home. Whatever the issue get someplace safe, take shelter.  This is why it is essential to make sure your bug out bag is always ready.

#2 Secure Water and Food… Whether you have it and carry it with you or are forced to forage for it, you need these to survive.

Join DJ Cooper in player below as she discusses what things you should consider, some ideas to help us stay organized and keep us from “freezing up” when that moment happens to us.

Firearm selection!
Josh “The 7P’s of Survival

Firearm 79x100It’s time to explore a topic I have only touched on a few times on the show, firearm selection. I know everyone has a passionate opinion on this topic with what they believe is the right weapon to have in ant given circumstance! We will explore selecting a firearm for concealed carry, home defense, hunting/predator protection, and even for a bug out bag or whatever you may call that type of kit.

Granted there will be overlap in categories but I will try to limit my discussion of each particular firearm to a single section. At the onset of the show I will talk about starter weapons which can function across many categories and are generally good weapons to begin your firearm journey with.

2-11 woman-gun1I will try not to show favoritism for any particular brands or models (gun selection is intensity personal), but when I’ve had a good or bad experience I may convey those stories (I have a few great warranty stories). Depending on time available we will talk a little about training, accessories, ammo selection and whatever other questions which may arise along the way.

So what are a few of the firearms we will be discussing? 44 magnum revolver, single shot 12 guage, air rifles, 22 lr, AR platform, AK platform and much more!

The belt knife!

The belt knife!
Josh “7P’s of Survival

belt knifeI have talked about knives on this show probably more than any other subject and yet it is almost always about a specific brand of knives. On this episode I decided to go in a different direction with a familiar topic and talk about how to go about selecting your belt knife. I have written several articles on this topic and one in particular I talk about the ten elements that I ensure a belt knife will have if it is going to be a one tool option.

For a long-term Survival/Self-Reliance Knife I look for the following options:

1) Fits your hand comfortably in all positions;
2) Manageable and effective blade length;
3) Solid/Flat Pommel;
4) One Cutting Edge with no serrations;
5) 90 degree edge on spine;
6) High Carbon Steel;
7) Sharp/Spear Point;
8) Heavy duty sheath with ferro rod loop;
9) Thick enough to withstand prolonged abuse;
10) Fixed blade with full or nearly full tang blade.

belt knifeNow let’s take a step back from that…. The first step in selecting a knife is making the determination of #1 how much you’re willing to spend and #2 what functions you plan to use the knife. So you only want to spend a small amount but want an all-around utility knife? Well, there are many options out there and we will talk about some of those. So what if you want a do it all knife but could care less about batoning you can always go for a leatherman, if you want a fighting knife they make a knife for that… So knowing exactly what your tool to do and do well is essential to getting the most out of your purchase regardless of how much you want to spend.

Throughout this show I walk through a potential knife purchases for various tasks and at different price points and what I would most likely purchase in that scenario. As always I welcome your questions and comments and would be glad to provide a little advice if you’re in the middle of a knife selection.

How to build YOUR Ultimate Bug out Bag aka “The BOB ”
DJ Cooper “Surviving Dystopia

BOB Tactical-BackpackMost of us are aware of what the BOB or Bug out Bag is and some of us are aware of what we need to put into this bag but most of us follow any one or combination of lists out there to help us decided on what to put in a bob.

2-3-16 mini_01BUT….The bug out bag is personal carrying all the things YOU need to survive should you be forced to leave the security of your homestead. Because it is personal I wish to talk about how to determine what is best for YOU and YOUR needs in this bag.

All of the different recommendations for bob bags and gear should be personal for you or your family’s needs.  These can range from medical conditions to the ages of children or simply personal preferences.

A few things that are pretty standard needs are:

  • 2-3-16 20160128_150153Water (Some way to carry or make it pure)
  • Fire (A means to heat and cook)
  • Food (you gonna open a package or hunt it?)
  • Clothing (This varies by the climate and the season)
  • Shelter (again are you going to build it or open it?)
  • First Aid (so many fail to give this segment the importance it mandates)
  • Tools (you at least need a knife, right?)
  • Self Defense (this could be a matter of life and death)
  • Misc (this may be your largest category)

Other considerations…

  • Weight (who is carrying this pack?)
  • Shelf Life of items (how often do you update it?)
  • The Pack itself (rigid or soft?)
    • One large bag or multiple smaller ones

2-3-16 ed05a6957ce7b10db5e8fbdde4231e9aThese are but a few considerations when deciding on what you choose to do but also there is the EDC (Ladies won’t want to miss this part!), 72 hour, Get Home bag, Auto kit, Med kit and others.

This week I would like to explore the different recommendations as well as considerations you should take into account when building your very own BOB.  How to keep it organized and ways to categorize and keep track of your items.
Look for more on this as well as a few lists on my blog www.survivingdystopia.com

How to make a knife!Want To learn How to Make A Knife? Listen in as I speak with James Whales (Founder and proprietor of Indy Hammered Knives) about his upcoming knife making classes and what the process students will learn in the class. How to make a knife! We will start off the show talking about his brand new Complete Knife Kit- IHK Skinner (find out more information Here), which I believe is the perfect gift for anyone who wants to learn about knife making or is interested in becoming more self reliant. The kit comes with the following items: 1) 8” IHK Skinner blade (pre shaped, sharpened and ready to go)- the blade is 4” and 8” overall; 2) Book Matched scales (handle material) of your choice- I personally love the ironwood that came on my IHK Bush Clever; 3) Brass Mosaic Pin and Brass Lanyard Tube cut to length; 4) Two ton two part epoxy in corked glass tubes; 5) Custom skinner sheath by Samson Leather; 6) Step-By-Step Instructions- Illustrated; 7) Letter of Authenticity; 8) Care Card Instructions on maintaining your high carbon steel blade; and 9) Beautiful Wooden Gift Box with brass hardware and latch. Paracord and the Endless Uses!

Today on Tech Preps we will talk about the various para-cord and what we can use it for. This little bit of technology has served us well for many years as a must have in anyone’s kit. There are so many uses paracord that I do not really know where to begin.

I have various forms of this in my kit, my vehicle that I carry with me everywhere. I will go over how it is made, the various types, strengths, and uses. Paracord or “cordage” as it is referred to in the prepper and bush crafting community is one of the best things to have besides a knife and food in the woods. We will talk about why you should have this on you, in your pack, on a knife, in your vehicle and the best kind to buy.

11-23-15 Cool-Paracord-ProjectsThere are a lot of spin offs out there so you can be fooled very easily about the type and quality you might need. I will also talk about some new stuff that is hitting the market called firecord, this is a great thing to have in any bush crafter or bugout bag. The firecord not only has strength of paracord but also has the ability to create tinder within the paracord core itself, so I will discuss this and show photos of this stuff in action.

11-23-15 maxresdefaultI will discuss what I use it for and maybe give you some tips as to what you can use it for and how to store it. I will also give a few tips on how to maintain paracord and it various knots to try to fashion to keep it from slipping on you in load bearing situations. As always we will be taking questions from the chat and taking calls from the audience.

SERE or Micro Kits, Why Everyone Needs One!
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival

Micro Kits Full+Kit+Contents_small_resizedIt’s been awhile since I’ve had a show where I could sit down and just talk to you about things I personally do and things from my kit. Tonight we are going to change that as I will be the guest for the evening :). I plan to examine my Micro kits and what I have found works best in them after a few years of testing.

Micro Kits PhotoGrid_1431130630079_resizedOver the years my Micro 10 C’s kit (see it here) has changed dramatically as it was initially more gadgets and now it fulfills my survival needs to match my evolving skill set. I have tested each item in the kit countless times and in various manners and each item has multiple uses to effect survival anywhere I might be in the world. This kit goes with me wherever I go and I believe it could get me out of nearly any jam in the woods. We will go through what I started out with which was more of an E&E prepper kit to what I carry today in my kit. Along the way I will tell you why I got rid of many of the items and why others made the cut.

I will then turn to my pocket first aid kit and delve into its contents. While it is nothing off the charts it was enough to get my wife through a two week trip with some serious blisters on her feet.

If there is a surplus of time (something I never seem to have) I will then dig into my edc items and my IFAK/blowout kit of choice (if we run out of time you can find my EDC kit HERE).

Ready to Update Your Bug-Out Bag?

Click here to view the original post.
Ready to Update Your Bug-Out Bag?

Bug-Out Bag -150x150Every once in a while you need to fine-tune your preps. Nobody gets it right the first time and we all end up with less than ideal gear because, as beginners, we often buy things out of impulse, falling prey to seductive advertising. Since our bug out bags are at the core of our survival plan, let’s start with those. What are some of the things we can improve?

Before we talk about all the essential items to add, remove or replace (full list here), we need to talk about the backpack. If it’s already full to the brim with supplies, you may need to consider getting a bigger one. Not to worry, you don’t have to throw this one away, you can repurpose it as a get home bag or as a Bug-Out Bag for your kids.

Keep in mind that bigger isn’t always better. If your bug out location isn’t far away or if you can’t carry that much weight, you should probably stick to a bag that’s easier to carry. Still, if you need a new hiking backpack, make sure it has a strong internal frame, padded shoulder straps and padded hip belts.

OK, moving on to the essentials we mentioned earlier…

To keep the process straightforward, you need to do two things. Number one, you need a laptop because you’re gonna make a list of all the things to add or replace and then research them online. Second, you need to take everything out of the Bug-Out Bag so you can put them back one by one (the ones that are still worth it, at least).

Did you do it? Great! All you have to do now is take each item one by one and ask yourself a few questions.

The first one is:

Do I really need it?

Keeping in mind a Bug-Out Bag’s purpose ends once the bug out itself ends, there’s no need to fill it with items you already have at your bug out retreat. For example, one of the things I blindly threw inside my Bug-Out Bag in the beginning that was considerably heavy was a printed copy of the SAS Survival Guide. Nope, it wasn’t the pocket edition. Now that book sits nicely on the shelf and my Bug-Out Bag is one pound lighter.

Sure, it’s always nice to have things that cover every possible scenario but let’s say you live in the burbs and your BOL is 20 miles away. Do you really need fishing hooks? Can you see yourself camping in the forest or fishing? In some cases, it’s better to keep your supplies split between your home and your bug out location to cover both scenarios (bugging in and bugging out, that is).

The second question you need to ask yourself is:

Do I know how to use this thing?

In case of pre-packed Bug-Out Bag or pre-packed first-aid kits, the buyers rarely know how to actually use the things they bought. They have this feeling of safety after the purchase simply because now they own the thing. But in a real emergency, they’re likely to look at that tourniquet or that multi-tool and scratch their heads because they don’t know how to use it.

Though learning new skills isn’t exactly on topic, since your bag items are already spread across the floor, why not make a list with the ones you need to learn how to use?

OK, moving on. After you decided you need to keep an item, the next questions to ask yourself are:

Is this a high-quality item?

…and…

Can I get a lighter/smaller version of it?

You see what we’re doing here, right? On the one hand, we need to make sure these items won’t let us down when we need them most; that could obviously cost us our lives. If you bought one particular item in the beginning, when you didn’t know much about prepping, it’s time to re-evaluate your choice and the way you do that is through research. There’re 2 small steps to take.

Step #1: Write in Google best [item]. For example, best survival knife or best multi-tool.

Step #2: Also write in Google: best [item] site:survivalistboards.com. This instructs Google to only return results from the most popular survival forum.

Step 1 will get you Amazon reviews, blog posts and articles about your chosen item. Step 2 will show you forum discussions by advanced preppers. Thus, you’ll make sure that you’re informed and make the best choice.

Do this for every item and you’ll surely find the best survival items for the best price. For instance, even though there are survival knives out there that cost hundreds of dollars, my “weapon of choice” is a Morakniv Companion with a carbon steel blade that’s only 15 bucks on Amazon.

Ok, back to our second question: can you find items that are lighter than the ones you have? Just because you found the best AM/FM radio, this doesn’t mean you need to get it. You might find something lighter that’s also considered pretty good, the main benefit being that if you do this for every item, you’ll end up with a BOB that’s easy to carry. (Graywolf has an excellent article on the topic of Bug-Out Bag weight, by the way)

The last thing you want to ask yourself while carefully examining each item is:

Is it working the way it should?

For example, are all your lighters working? Try them all one by one. Is your survival knife sharpened? If not, that’s going to be a huge problem. Is your spare cell-phone battery fully loaded and functional? Test it to find out.

Well this is it. I think it’s obvious that inspecting your Bug-Out Bag isn’t as hard as it seemed in the beginning of this article. You can always improve it and adapt it to your changing needs, just make sure you continue to educate yourself on the topic and periodically inspecting it every 6 months to a year.

Pathfinder School, Knife, & Self-Reliance!
Josh “The 7 P’s of Survival

Pathfinder SchoolHold on to your hats Ladies and Gentlemen this show is a barn burner and race against the clock! Tonight we will have Jamie Burleigh (lead instructor at the Pathfinder School) on the show to talk about all things Pathfinder! This will be a Special episode of the 7 P’s of Survival and we had to secured an extra ½ hour of air time to allow for all the questions in the Chat Room.

10-27-15 Phantom_II_on_Tree__00931.1439822245.400.527A large part of the show was dedicated to the introduction of the Pathfinder Knife Shop (henceforth “PKS”) a subsidiary of the Self Reliance Outfitters (henceforth “SRO”). Currently PKS offers four knives: Phantom 2, Scorpion, Scorpion HD, Kephart, and maybe a special announcement about upcoming knives! See the knives and visit the website HERE!

While I haven’t got a chance to get one of these knives in my hands yet they look amazing and have the specifications and lifetime guarantee to back up their products just like the other major players in the custom self-reliance knife business. Also being that it is backed by the SRO, I’m positive that you will enjoy your blade just as much as their other products.

We then transition over to a few staple products at the pathfinder school that I love: Stainless Steel Bottle Kit, Stainless Steel Bushpot, and many more products just to name a few. There also may be a few new product revelations in this section of the show. I know many or you want to know about the decelerator that pairs with the stainless bottle kit mentioned above and I also ask and see if any information can be given at this time as it seems like the perfect pairing for that kit! We talk about upcoming events and upcoming specials and what we can expect from the pathfinder school going forward. We also talk about a couple of the products Jamie designed himself: 1) Burleigh Blam and 2) Bug Shot. I have personally used Burleigh Balm and it works amazingly.

Pathfinder SchoolOnce we got through that section of the conversation we talk a little bit about the Pathfinder School, its classes and survival philosophy. We talk about all of their course offerings at the Ohio School location, the 10 C’s of survivability and remote/correspondence courses. We talk what you would need to make it through a PF Class, what to do to prepare for a PF Class and the general order in which you should take your PF Classes. We also discuss Pathfinder TV (a YouTube subscription service) that has a ton of instructional videos as well as the Schools old YouTube channel that has some of the best self-reliance related material on the internet.

While not exactly edible, having these ten comfort items will make everyday life more comfortable, whatever your emergency, wherever you are.

  1. Deodorant/anti-perspirant. Picture this. You’ve been in your bunker for three weeks. Sponge baths are a rare treat. Then you remember your stash of Secret anti-perspirant. Ahhhh….. instant morale booster, especially if shared.
  2. Feminine products. Aunt Flo doesn’t stop her visits for something as trivial as a nuclear war. A six month’s stash, especially o.b. brand, won’t take up much room, and will greatly improve your quality of life.
  3. Small items for entertainment. Choose multi-use toys and games. Playing cards or Play-Dough, for example. Include a lengthy, multi-chapter book for yourself but family-friendly enough to serve as a read-aloud.
  4. Bar soap. In a pinch it can be used for shampoo and even laundry.
  5. Zip-Locs of all sizes. These can’t be beat for everything from a tooth for the Tooth Fairy to containing nuclear waste, aka dirty diapers.
  6. Rope for a clothesline and clothes pins. Air-dried laundry smells and feels so clean and crisp. It may become your preferred method of drying, even after the electricity comes on, and of course there’s the added benefit of being oh-so-Green!
  7. A pack of never-before-opened underwear for each family member. Enough said.
  8. Battery-powered CD player & CDs. There’s just something about beautiful music for defusing tension and calming nerves.
  9. Tylenol PM. Seriously. Do you really want to be 100% conscious wrapped up in your silver emergency blanket, huddled in the back seat of your mini-van?
  10. Toilet paper. But you knew I was going to say that, didn’t you??

Preparing for natural disasters, nuclear war, or a complete societal breakdown, doesn’t mean we have to lose our sense of humor. In fact, your sense of humor should be #1 on this list! Don’t ever hunker down in your bunker without your comfort items!
