Your Survival Library

Click here to view the original post.

survival_library_books

wilderness_book_survival_educateWe all know that knowledge is power; but when it really comes down to an emergency, the right kind of knowledge could be the difference between life and death. We take a look at some of the best survival books for your library or Kindle. The books in this collection were chosen because they truly make life easier. Why make stupid mistakes when you can learn from the mistakes from others?

By Alex Coyne, a contributing author of Survival Cache & SHTFBlog

The books on this list serve as a cornerstone of good survival habits and practices. Any competent survivalist will understand the information conveyed in these materials.

The Ultimate Guide to Wilderness Living

Also known as the Naked Wilderness Survival Guide, this book’s slightly longer title tells you every you need to know about it: Surviving with nothing but your bare hands and what you find in the woods. John and Geri McPherson are well-known in survivalist circles, and have been instructing people in the art of wilderness survival for decades.

Read Also: Survival Books for Your Bunker

Fire Skills: Methods for Starting Fires Without Matches

A collaborative project by David and Victoria Aman, this book teaches you more about how to make fire in the field – fire is one of the most primitive human skills, and in a situation where you’re fighting for survival, knowing how to make, use, and control fire will be one of your most critical skills.

A Field Guide to Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs

This one’s part of the Peterson Field Guide series; check out the rest if you want to broaden your nature library. This one applies to western medicinal plants and herbs: What you’ll encounter in the wild and what to do with it. Knowledge of plants, it goes without saying, is essential if you don’t want to die from eating or applying the wrong thing.

The Complete Book of Knots

By Geoffrey Budworth, this book really is the complete book of knots. Knot-making can get you out of a lot of tight situations: You might need to tie together a knot to keep your gear or shelter in one place, and that’s just two examples. Knots are useful. Learn how.

First-Aid WikiBooks

WikiBooks is a great resource for information, and this one is specifically geared towards basic First-Aid. You won’t find much of survival info in here, but at the end of reading this one you should know what to do in a medical emergency at the very least, which makes it worth a look.

Related: 3 Types of Books you Should Read and Why

The American Red Cross First-Aid and Safety Handbook

First-Aid is vital, so here’s another take on the First-Aid straight from the American Red Cross. You know the information you’re getting in here is accurate, so make sure you’ve got this one standing on your bookshelf, or hanging around on your Kindle device.

US Air Force Survival Handbook

Also known as The Portable and Essential Guide to Staying Alive, the US Air Force Survival Handbook is surprisingly available for order off of Amazon. Get your copy and learn how to stay alive from the experts.

The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook

survival_book_complete_survival_shelters_handbookBy Anthonio Akkermans, The Complete Survival Shelters Handbook contains guides on how to build shelters for almost any environment and climate using materials you’ll find around you in such a situation.  According to the book’s description, you can expect to find out more about everything from a Yurt to a Debris Hut and Scandinavian Lavvu. In any survival situation, crafting adequate shelter is crucial. Having multiple ways to construct shelter is A worthy inclusion to anyone’s library!

The Bushcraft Field Guide to Trapping, Gathering and Cooking in the Wild

Food: Even outside of a survival situation, you’re screwed without it. Here’s the field guide to trapping, gathering and cooking in the wild. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t take this one on the road if you’re just planning a camping trip at a nearby game reserve; that being said, it’s essential info for the serious survivalist.

A Field Guide to Edible Wild Plants: Eastern and Central North America

This one is also part of the Peterson Field Guide series – see, we told you to go look! This one is geared towards Eastern and Central North America. Even if travelling there isn’t in your plans, familiarize yourself with the area’s plants and their uses. As we all know, survival situations rarely stick to a plan.

Survive! Essential Skills and Tactics to Get You Out of Anywhere – Alive

Written by the guy behind the TV show Survivalman, this book comes highly recommended by many survival experts. The book promises a no-BS look at survival, and that’s pretty much exactly what you get. It covers everything from shelters to survival kits as well as “why the notion of hunting and tracking large game is largely a pipe dream” in a wilderness situation.

The Ultimate Survival Manual: 333 Skills That Will Get You Out Alive

The Ultimate Survival Manual is certainly comprehensive; the book offers a run-down of skills that you absolutely cannot afford to be without.

The US Army Survival Manual

Know the ins and outs of survival like a real soldier: It could be the difference between life and death.  This one goes well with the US Air Force Manual (recommended further up), and it teaches you not only what to do in a survival situation, but how to prepare yourself for anything you might encounter mentally. Things like first-aid and health are also covered at length.

Bushcraft 101: A Field Guide to the Art of Wilderness Survival

Dave Canterbury is well-known in survival circles, and there are a couple books that add to the Bushcraft series: This is only one of them, and focuses purely on the art of survival in the wilderness. Also take a look at Advanced Bush Craft once you’ve read your way through the rest.

The One Most Important Question Survivalists Can Ask Themselves: Why Are You Trying To Survive?

Click here to view the original post.

The One Most Important Question Survivalists Can Ask Themselves: Why Are You Trying To Survive?

With the news being what it is, the world has now come to the point at which a huge shake-up is undeniable – to anyone who has 2 cents worth of brain matter between their ears. So hordes are joining the stampede to become “survivalists”. The movement has even spurred the development of the “survival industry”, with commercials now being played on mainstream media stations for freeze-dried storage foods and solar generators.

There is an old saying, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will do.” So if you are going to go the path of being a “survivalist”, first you’ll want to know where you are going – and why.

Plenty of alternative news outlets are trumpeting that “martial law” is soon to be implemented – and the facts they present in support can only lead to that conclusion. So everyone wants to survive martial law. But what is on the other side of the marital law? The reality is that martial law can’t go on forever, but what will society/government look like after it has been dismantled?

If 9/11 caused so much restriction – by law or by fiat – of travel, of personal dignity rights, of speech, of redress of grievances, what will the next event (planned by man or by the hand of The Almighty) bring? Will you take the chip to be given your ration of food? If you allow your children to stand naked to be viewed by pedophiles in order to shop in a mall or fly on a plane, will you say no to anything else demanded of you?

Another major story all over the Internet – alternative and mainstream outlets – is that virtually the entire world’s economy is about to collapse – again, a foregone conclusion. Not a matter of if, but when. Eventually, the creditors demand their due. So everyone wants to survive an economic collapse and the chaos that will bring. But what is on the other side of the collapse?

Putting aside all the sensationalism, putting aside all the hype and all the wishes, the most likely scenario is that a new monetary system, digital in format, no cash, will be instituted and run by the same bankers who run the dollar systems now – if not the same people, people with the same heart. They will tout the new system as being just like before (hush . . . except that everyone’s every financial move will be tracked, incoming and outgoing).

It will usher in the removal of personal privacy and the instilling of fear. Fear that stops you from doing something, not because it’s not right, but because someone says you shouldn’t do it – usually because it does not benefit them. Is that alright with you? Will you join that society? Is that why you want to survive – to end up just as entrapped, even more so, than you are now?

Far too many people die soon after reaching retirement. The reason for this is that they have spent their entire careers with the only goal being that retirement. They did not have a vision of life after retirement, and so they had none. An unfortunate fact.

We have met many people who believe that they truly want to be survivalists. They have many reasons for wanting to survive, based on what they understand of the news. But over time they show that they still want to have one foot on third base, and so will never make it to home plate. They really don’t want their comfy lives upset, they don’t really want to have to give up their 62” plasma screen TV, they don’t really want to eat foods they actually have to cook, they want to be able to whip out their credit card at Trader Joe’s forever . . . but they want to be out of the way when TSHTF, too. Their vision is to “hole-up” in a sanctuary until the noise stops, and then go back to the same rat race they were in before – the same rat race that got us all in the predicament in which we now find ourselves as a society.

So why bother? If your ultimate goal is to save your neck so that you can go back to the same old same old, why would you put yourself through this? It’s like quitting smoking and starting again, knowing that you’ll just have to go through the withdrawal all over again. To be more exact, an ancient book of wisdom talked of “a dog returning to its own vomit.” Why put yourself through that? Why dislocate yourself and your family, mentally as well as physically, if you are ultimately happy right where you are?

If you are contented to fight your way through the morning commute so that you can be given a paycheck for performing a job you hate just so you can still afford your $8 Latte Enema at the local coffee chain and you can use that money to buy your kids every throw-away toy the commercials tell them they want, STAY THERE! You won’t be comfortable outside of those bonds.

The right answer to the question proposed in the title is: I want to survive because there is a better way to live, regardless of what the world “out there” does or does not do.

I want to be paid by nature for my own labor and that of my family (by blood or otherwise) in being good stewards of the Earth.

I want to help others who are also willing to work toward a common goal, each lightening the load of the other.

I want to look out my window and be invigorated by the Earth’s natural beauty before my eyes, by the stars in the sky.

I want to be judged by my acts of kindness, not by how much money I can obtain.

I want to give something of real value to my children and to theirs.

It’s not impossible. It’s not a foolish wish. It is being lived now by those who have stopped complying with that which is wrong. It is being lived now by those who know the depth of their own power and use it – not to impose evil acts upon another, but to lead a good and natural life for themselves. It is being lived now by those who choose to survive – not to survive the chaos, but to survive the beating down of the human spirit so that they may be a beacon to renew that spirit in light.

It ain’t easy – but it sure is worth it.

History has shown us many times that it can all fly away in a split of a second. The biggest misstep that you can take now is to think that this can never happen in America or to you! Call me old fashioned; I don’t care…but I completely believe in America and what our ancestors stood for. They all had a part in turning this land into one of the most powerful countries in the world. Many died and suffered before a creative mind found an ingenious solution to maybe a century old problem. Believe it or not, our ancestors skills are all covered in American blood. This is why these must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same for our children and our children’s children. Our ancestors laid the bricks and built the world’s strongest foundation…that we are about to -irreversibly forget! I don’t want to see our forefathers’ knowledge disappear into the darkness of time…and if you care for your family…and what America stands for…then neither should you! Watch the video HERE and learn more

Escape from Your City: Surviving an Attack

Click here to view the original post.

In September 2011, a survey, conducted by the National Center for Disaster Preparedness at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health found that most Americans at the time were unprepared for a major disaster. The survey also concluded that those surveyed maintained a false sense of security with regard to what will happen if a major disaster or a terrorist attack took place.

Contrary to the reality on the ground, one-third of those surveyed believed that during a crisis calling 911 would bring help within an hour, while 30 percent said they believed help would come within several hours. Those surveyed had obviously never called for help during a crisis (Homeland Security News Wire, 2011).

That was 2011, what do you think the response would be today. Today more people depend on the government for their daily sustenance. Their housing, their cell phones, and their heating bills are paid for outright or subsidized by taxpayer money, so, of course, many will believe that during a crisis help will arrive. Help arrived every month up until this point, so why would a crisis change anything is the thinking among some people.

You know better of course, and we know better because we have been there before, and it essentially boils down to every person for himself or herself.

Cities around the world have had to deal with attacks against innocents, soft targets if you will. Places where security is minimal to non-existent. Malls, open-air markets, and celebrations are soft targets. Attackers do not want anything to impede their slaughter, and having armed resistance hinders or may even thwart their mission, so they don’t go after hardened targets for the most part.

Your community is a soft target, and any public place in today’s world is subject to an attack. It can be an attack by a machete-wielding maniac, a terrorist in a semi truck or a suicide bomber or a mass murderer with a gun.

If the attack is large enough, you may have to escape the city. Terrorist, typically employ multiple attacks. The first is to kill the civilians and the second attack is to kill the first responders. They may use bombs set to go off with timers or have suicide bombers waiting.

For your own safety, you have to assume there will be a second attack, and thus, you must get clear of the area quickly.

Cities in this country simply do not know how to evacuate civilians. Everyone is in a panic and the first things people do is jump in their cars and jam the highways, bridges, and tunnels. Most cities in this country have never had to evacuate. Coastal cities do of course, and even with the practice, some cities have had evacuating citizens ahead of a hurricane it still is essentially a big cluster. People swarm the gas stations and grocery stores on their way out of town. As you know, they should have been ready days in advance. It’s not as if the experts didn’t know a hurricane was barreling toward the coast and yet people line up at gas stations because they don’t have enough fuel to reach the city limits let alone get far enough away from the destructive force of nature.

A terrorist attack would be worse because we simply cannot fathom how they think, which makes them unpredictable, and of course, the average citizen would have no warning whatsoever of an attack. It would be sudden and violent, and those not used to sudden violence will be in a panic, but you have to override your fear and make the right moves.

Politicians and the White House tell us not to change our habits, don’t give into fear, however, those without fear die first. You don’t want to panic, but you need fear to spur you to make changes. If there is even a whiff of danger politicians and the residents of the White House are whisked away to a safe location, they changed their habits, but we are not supposed to?

To stay alive you have to adapt and overcome but first, you have to prepare. You need an action plan, and yes, avoid crowded restaurants, malls, outdoor markets, and symbolic celebrations.

If you can’t or will not avoid these areas, then at least make some plans. Know the streets, know the train schedules, and know the back way out of any building. Have enough supplies in your vehicle or office to survive 48 hours.

Once an attack takes place, the roads and highways will be barricaded, and trains stopped and/or searched, buses will halt and airports will be heavily patrolled. You will have a very hard time leaving the city unless you move fast.

You may have to find a motel/hotel to stay in for the next 24-48 hours, so make sure you have the means to do so in your action bag. You need emergency cash or credit/debit cards, clothing and a firearm if legally allowed in your action bag. If you can legally carry one then do so, but keep in mind if you are searched, you may lose your firearm for a few days, or forever. Many places now scan for weapons so you may find it hard to get into certain buildings, and you certainly cannot get into any federal building or police station with a firearm on your person or in a bag.

Stay Tuned for More!

Would ALL Wildlife Be Wiped Out If Society Collapses? The Answer May Surprise You

Click here to view the original post.

hunter-2-publicdomainpicturesdotnet

All hunters complain, at least one, about having to buy a hunting license. For that matter, they’ve probably complained that they were limited to hunting only during a few short weeks a year. But in fact, there is a very good reason why we need hunting licenses and we need a hunting season. That is, that without the restrictions that hunting season and hunting laws place on “We the People,” there wouldn’t be any game.

The History

When this country was first settled, it teemed with game. Early explorers were unanimous in their praises for both the quantity and the quality of wild game, ready for harvest by European long guns. Who hasn’t heard the reports of buffalo covering the Great Plains? The herds were so vast that they went on for miles.

Yet where are those vast herds of buffalo today? What has happened to the deer? The truth is that there have been times in our nation’s history where the game were all but extinct due to overhunting. Without proper controls, it could easily happen again.

In the early days of our country, wildlife flourished, especially deer. Reports dating from the early 1800s indicate that there were more deer in Illinois than there were when the nation was founded. Wolves and other predators had been hunted ruthlessly by farmers in order to protect their livestock. This allowed deer populations to grow, as the predators which killed them were nearly hunted to extinction.

Learn The Secrets Of A Veteran Hunter As He Demonstrates How To Quickly Field-Dress Game

But by the late 1800s, the deer population in Illinois had dropped to the point where they were virtually eliminated. Hunters, who were allowed to hunt year-round, without a bag limit, had killed off the deer. [1]

It took a major conservation effort on the part of the state of Illinois to repopulate the deer in their state, including importing white tail deer from other parts of the country. Now, deer are plentiful once again and hunters are once again harvesting deer in the fall. But restrictions are in place to ensure that overhunting doesn’t happen again.

Illinois isn’t the only state where this happened. As settlers moved westwards, they cleared out much of the wild game population in state after state. This was the result of not only hunters harvesting the game, but also of farmers taking much of the game’s natural habitat. Time and time again, animals were killed nearly to extinction, before conservation efforts were put in place.

The Problem Today

Would Wildlife Be Wiped Out If Society Collapses? The Answer May Surprise You

Many survivalists and preppers talk about living off the land, following a societal collapse. But the population of the United States is much higher than it was in the 1800s. In 1800, the entire U.S. population was only 5.3 million people. A century later, it had grown to 76.2 million people. But today, we have about 319 million people.

Less than two percent of our population has a stockpile of food in their home. So, it’s reasonable to assume that most people will be looking for whatever food they can find. Without their normal food sources to depend on, people will be looking for everything from stray cats to edible house plants. Many, having heard of our ancestors hunting for food, will naturally assume that they can, too.

Just 30 Grams Of This Survival Superfood Provides More Nutrition Than An Entire Meal!

To even think that the current game population could support the current population of people is somewhere on the far side of foolish. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service, we have more than 13.7 million hunters in the United States (as of the 2013 hunting season). With that number of hunters, it wouldn’t take long at all to lower game levels to a near-extinction point once again; and that’s without everyone else out there trying to hunt for food as well. (This is why it is so important to grow and raise your own food.)

But we have to remember: Not all gun owners are hunters. With somewhere over 300 million privately owned guns in the United States, there are many more people who will be out there trying to hunt, than the “real” hunters in our society. Even if those people are ineffective hunters, their mere presence will make the game go deeper into the woods.

Let me throw one more monkey wrench in the works here. The vast majority of our population is concentrated on the East and West Coasts, especially the Northeast and Southern California. Yet those aren’t the areas of highest game density. In fact, the areas of highest game density are where the population is lowest. So, the people with the greatest need will find that they will have the least possibility of hunting for their food.

This means that if anyone in the country would have a chance of living off the land, it’s the people who live in the lowest density areas of the country, especially Idaho, Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas. Perhaps those people can depend on game to help them survive, but the rest of us are going to need other sources for our food.

What is your reaction? Do you think there is enough wild game to support America, post-collapse? Share your thoughts in the section below:

It Takes a Village to Survive in Style

Click here to view the original post.
survive

Even the meerkats have figured it out and work together.

I see many different ways that people are preparing to survive TEOTWAWKI.  Some are choosing to go as lone wolfs, others as isolated homesteaders.   I think in terms of a village.  A group that will cooperate together will normally survive in better shape than smaller groups.

By a village I use the term loosely, it can be friends, family, a church group, an organization or a small town.  The whole idea is that you have a number of people who will work together for the common good.  They will not all be equipped and supplied in the same way.  As with any group, some will put more into it than others.  Some of these groups will have preplanned others will just spring up.

The big advantage of a group is that you have many different skills and can share the work, I am not a gardener, but some of my friends are.  I have other talents that will benefit them.  Now I am not saying that you have a rigid command structure that dictates orders.  But you do what the pioneers did when they first came west.  You help each other.

I have supplies and I know that some of my friends do not have as much.  Will I help them? Yes, I will do the best of my ability without harming my family.  Our supplies are only a stopgap measure at best.  When the supplies run out there will be a new normality and we will have to survive in it. Developing needed skills and crafts will allow us to trade for what we need.  Having a variety of skills and sufficient numbers to provide protection may be necessary in order to keep your families safe.

If you look at almost any primitive society, they lived in tribes or clans.  This was true of the American Indians and people from most undeveloped countries.  I believe that this was true in the early settlement of the United States.  People helped one another.  In the future, this may be the key to our survival.  Take stock of your situation and find your village.

Surviving the first 72 hours!

Surviving the first 72 hours!
DJ Cooper “SurvivingDystopia

Surviving the first 72 hoursWe are told over and over again to have a 72 hour bag.  This bag will help get you home or just get you through those first 3 days. Thinking back to previous shows and to even the page for this show.  There is a quote by Alfred Henry Lewis who said, “There are only 9 meals between mankind and anarchy.”  Again the first 72 hours being the critical thought here.  What is it about those 72 hours that can make or break your chances for survival?

3-9-16 fireIn any disaster the first 72 hours is likely the most critical time.  The things you do and steps you take could determine how or even if you survive.  According to FEMA you need to make sure you have the following things: Food, Water, First aide, Fire Extinguisher, Flashlight, A means to cook, Radio, Meds, Tools and stuff for your pets

The Red Cross pretty much agrees, that you should expect the unexpected.

Whether you stay in place or bug out you need to take steps to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones.  Every disaster is different and each could change the things you do in those 72 hours.

#1 thing to consider…

3-9-16 evacuationAFTER disaster strikes is NOT the time to try and prepare. Although afterwards there are steps you should take and things you should do.  Disasters are not generally a planned event and acting quickly without losing focus will be critical.  Being prepared by definition means to have done so BEFORE.

Two things you need to consider first and foremost:

#1 Get out of danger… this may mean bugging out, or getting home. Whatever the issue get someplace safe, take shelter.  This is why it is essential to make sure your bug out bag is always ready.

#2 Secure Water and Food… Whether you have it and carry it with you or are forced to forage for it, you need these to survive.
