The world is no longer a predictable place. There are a lot of things that can go wrong and a lot of reasons why they might. There is an uncertain political landscape, natural disaster, the possibility of super-flue’s becoming too much for antibiotics, global warming and terrorism (in whatever form that may come in). And we haven’t even mentioned the possibility of a zombie outbreak, which may be unlikely but doesn’t mean it isn’t entirely impossible. But as far apart as these threats may be from one another, there is one common interest that links them all: the need for a survival strategy. So, here is a list of things you should prepare.

  1. Escape Route

Don’t just rely on one option. Have a Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and D,E,F if possible. This requires a lot of consideration. You’ll need to consider what transport will be available (given a lot of public services won’t be operating anymore). Will it be a car or a truck, or a boat, or maybe you have a plane tucked away. We recommend a boat (if you live near a river, lake or sea) or a economic 4×4 if you live on land. The other thing to remember is not to take major roads. These will be everyone’s first thought, so plan an alternative route that doesn’t rely on main roads. Oh, and take a handheld GPS with you.

  1. Your Pack

These are also called ‘Bug Out Bags’ and are becoming increasingly popular, you know, just in case. You never know when an earthquake may hit, or a flood, or riots, or zombies; so have a bug out bag prepared and left near an exit from your home or in your car or at work. Somewhere you can grab it easily as you go to leave. When it comes to rules, make sure your survival pack is easy and comfortable to carry. Make sure its contents are simple. Make sure everything in their is needed, no luxuries. Make sure the contents allow you to become totally self-sufficient. And plan for how long you want your back to last you, for example 72 to 96 hours will be great. Click here to see what we’re talking about.

  1. Food and Water

It is crucial you take into consideration routes that take you to or near a natural source of clean water, such as a river or lake. These will allow you to replenish your supplies of water, which will be critical in your attempts to survive. It could also be a good idea to make sure you know where certain crop farms are, especially things like potato farms. Being able to collect a food supply of slow-release energy will help your bid.

  1. Choose Your Destination

This shouldn’t be one single point, but a selection of options. Options are going to be your best friend. The other thing to consider is having options in multiple different directions. There is no point in having two options both in the same town, and on the same street. Tips to consider are once again local water supplies, food supplies, vegetation and minimally populated areas. If you need to lock down for a long time, consider places like supermarkets where the security is strong and supplies are plentiful, including any first aid supplies you may need.

8 Zombie Resources To Check Out

Zombie Resources

What zombie resources are there for you ravenous fans out there? Sadly not a huge amount. I have some of my favorites that I will talk about.

Like the rest of the web, site turnover is high. Many that I have loved are gone or not updated.

I love zombies and Zombie Week 2016 but I could not blog about it year round. So I understand. Kinda.

I’ve curated a list of zombie resources I can recommend. If you have a great one I missed leave it in the comments.

Must Hate Zombies

Must Hate Zombies is my buddy Guy’s podcast On finding a partner for the zombie apocalypse. It’s a fun podcast filled with some great info.

We’re Alive

We’re Alive is a great podcast. It is all fictional about a group of survivors in a Zombie Apocalypse. It is a full audio production in a podcast. A cast and sound effects. Like the old radio programs before tv’s.

Zombie Squad

The Zombie Squad Forums are literally what introduced me to survival. I stumbled onto a thread on Bug Out Bags and they rest is history. Still my favorite Survival Forum on the net.

Zombie Go Boom

I just found this YouTube channel and I’m loving it so much I’m adding it to my zombie resources. On Zombie Go Boom   They test out various ways to kill zombies. GO Watch you will enjoy.

Z.E.R.T

Z.E.R.T  does training to help you survive a zombie apocalypse. The training has evolved over time to be some of the best organized around. They also have some of the coolest patches.

Zombie Survival Camp

More zombie survival training and camping here. It tends to be a little less tactical than ZERT and more common man.

Zombie Survival Guide

Zombie Survival Guide is worth a pickup. I have been into zombies longer than real survival and this book has some nuggets of info. You can generally find one used for a few bucks too.

The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse: A Cookbook and Culinary Survival Guide

The Art of Eating through the Zombie Apocalypse: A Cookbook and Culinary Survival Guide I was sent this by Permanoob Prepper on youtube. I will be doing a full review soon but so far it looks like a great read. I especially like the chapter on raising bugs as a food source for humans.

12 Weapons For A Zombie Apocalypse To Keep You Alive

Weapons For A Zombie Apocalypse

Weapons For A Zombie Apocalypse

Weapons For A Zombie Apocalypse

Zombie Week 2016 continues! Today lets talk about weapons for a zombie apocalypse. These weapons will work great to get you through a zombie uprising.

Even  though I am a huge fan of the zombie genre I do not believe zombies apocalypse will ever actually occur. For me, it is more metaphorically. So This article could be used for weapons for whatever two legged vermin during an SHTF.

It is easier to talk about bashing in a zombies brain than your neighbor that is hungry. That is why I talk about building community. I would rather give a neighbor a bag of rice over a bullet.

Screwdriver/ Icepick

Weapons For A Zombie need only destroy the brain. Which generally will work for all living creatures too. A screwdriver or an icepick both work really well for this.

The issue with using a screwdriver is how close you have to get to a zombie. It is very effective at piercing the brain. But you have to do it in close quarters.

Knife

A knife is the same as a screwdriver. It is for a quick puncture to the brain. Not all knives will work as good. You will want to get a knife designed for stabbing not slicing.

A pointy knife with a strong tip will work great. Daggers will shine in this use. As will any long, skinny pointy one.

Hamer

Hamers make great improvised weapons for a zombie. In 2011 in the US 496 murders committed with hammers and clubs. So It is obviously an effective weapon.

Depending on the weight of the hammer and your strength you could have to hit the zombie multiple times. And you have to get in close.

Hamers are effective but better used as a last-ditch effort over the first line of defense.

Hatchet

In the comic, The Walking Dead, Ricks’ favorite weapon was the hatchet. It is a great close range weapon for a zombie. Unlike the hammer, you have the benefit of it being sharpened.

The chances of destroying the brain with only one hit are much higher.

Both hammers and Hatchets have a chance to get stuck, though. This could get you killed if it happens at the wrong time.

Baseball Bat

With a baseball bat, you can move back a little. All the previous weapons for a zombie are extreme close range ones. The further away you can dispatch a zombie the safer you will be.

If you plan on killing zombies with a bat choose aluminum or high-quality wood. A cheap wood bat will break at the worst time.

Mace

With a mace, you are combining both bashing and piercing weapons in one. Mace’s are basically baseball bats with spikes on them.

If it worked in medieval times it will work for zombies, right?

With a mace, you get to step back from the target and don’t have to swing as hard as with a baseball bat.

You will most likely get stuck in a skull. You will have to pull it back out after most every strike.

Pike

Here is another ancient weapon to fight zombies with. A pike is a long staff with a sharpened end.

With a pike, you get to move even further back. Every step you take back the higher your chances of survival rise.

With many of these weapons for a  zombie that risk of getting stuck is high. With a pike at least it should pull back out easy.

Sword

All the nerds just rejoiced. I almost didn’t put a sword on the list. I don’t feel it is the most practical weapon for a zombie.

Many liberal zombie fans hail swords as the ultimate weapon. Meh.

Swords can be used effectively, though. I remember a news story a few years back on a homeowner using a sword on an intruder. In this case, it was very effective in stopping the attack.

I feel that having to destroy the brain will be hard with a sword. The sword will get stuck and leave you defenseless.

Sling Shot

The sling and the sling shot can be used to pierce the skull. You will want to get a high-end sling shot not a toy. A sling is a weapon but you will need practice with it.

With a sling and slingshot, you have a few advantages.

Slings are quiet weapons for a zombie. This is very important. With guns, the sound will draw more zombies.

Your best ammo will be steel ball. They are cheap and easy to stock up on now. In a pinch, though rocks will work.

To pierce the brain you will need to be fairly close. No snipping with a sling shot.

Bow / Crossbow

Yes, a bow and a crossbow will work as weapons for a zombie. But no it is not the greatest weapon in the world like The Walking Dead will have you believe.

Bows are very quiet. With practice, you can get pretty fast. Even with a crossbow. You will be able to take longer range shots to keep safe.

Unless you are able to retrieve your arrows and bolts after though you will eventually run out. And even then they will become unusable.

If you plan on using a bow for killing zombies you need to stock up on bows and learn to make them. Making them is the only way to shoot long term.

Handgun

I’m going to talk mostly in terms of generalities here. I can’t go in depth on every caliber.

Handguns are amazing tools for self-defense. I feel you should have one daily now and more so in an SHTF.

With a handgun, you get to put in some decent distance from your target. You have several shots you can make before reloading.

Every caliber will work to destroy the brain. Yes, even the .22.

For zombies, you need a suppressor. Period. No, it won’t be like in the movies but it will be much quieter.

Even with a suppressor it will be loud and will attract more zombies. A handgun is not your first choice of a weapon to kill a zombie. It is a last ditch escape.

Rifle

For a rifle, you want smaller and quieter. Think .22 and .17 HMR. A suppressed subsonic .300 blackout is one addition to my weapons for a zombie.

You want to find a balance of power, distance, and quietness. The further away you can take out a zombie without drawing more is the ultimate in zombie killing.

For me, my number one pick is still a scoped .22 rifle. It is quiet and will do the job at a decent distance.

Conclusion

This one is hard to conclude on. What are the Weapons For A Zombie Apocalypse? Well since Zombies aren’t real. Also, why pick only one?

In a zombie apocalypse, I want as many weapons as I can carry without slowing me down. So have a .22 rifle, a sidearm, a hatchet and a knife.

As preppers, we never put all our eggs in one basket. If you only rely on your main battle rifle then when it breaks you’re screwed.

Survival Instructions For The Zombie Apocalypse Infographic

It’s the week leading up to Halloween and I love it. Zombies are what got me into survival. It’s a silly way to get into it but it’s true.

Today I have Survival Instructions For The Zombie Apocalypse Infographic for you. I found this on Pinterest from Grocery Coupon Network. Proof that everyone loves zombies.

The Survival Instructions For The Zombie Apocalypse Infographic begins with zombie speed in media. You can see that for the most part, they have got faster over the years. With the exception of the Walking Dead Tv Show.

Fast Zombies scare me.

The survival supplies section is pretty sparse but accurate. 1 gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food and first aid.

The weapons section relies solely on melee weapons. No guns on the list. I feel this is a mistake. Nothing beats a subsonic .22 to kill zombies.

The Survival Instructions For The Zombie Apocalypse Infographic ends with info on barter goods. The three categories it lists is Alcohol, Ammunition, and Gasoline. Those are a good start.

I would add entertainment and precious metals to that list. Silver and gold have always had value. Initially in a zombie outbreak, they would not but afterward, yes. For entertainment, I mean books, magazines etc. People always want distractions from the world.

How To Pick Survival Guns For An Apocalypse | episode 121

In this podcast, Mike and I talk about How To Pick Survival Guns For An Apocalypse. What guns would we both pick for a few different apocalypses? We begin with a general SHTF. Basically, the best survival guns that will work for any situation. There is no ultimate survival gun for every situation. We pick several guns to accomplish different goals.

After we take care of the normal Survival Guns For An Apocalypse we dig into zombie apocalypse a little. What survival guns would differ from one SHTF to another? What is my top pick for a zombie gun?

We only briefly touch on outlandish weapons. I talk about how great a rail gun could be for a zombie apocalypse. If one was built light enough with enough power to be useful. The problem with many of the homemade railguns is the trade off between the stopping power of the projectile and the battery weight to power it. If that ratio gets perfected railguns make great Survival Guns For An Apocalypse.

Mike dispels the myth that a crossbow makes a great weapon against zombies. Since you have to  reclaim your spent bolts makes it, not a great weapon.

Here’s something fun for a change. The writers over at estately.com made a chart that lists every U.S. state in order from most to least likely to survive a zombie apocalypse. They used 11 metrics to figure this out: Active Military Personnel Military Veterans Physically Active Martial Arts Enthusiasts People with Survival Skills People with […]

5 Prepping Lessons From The Walking Dead

Van Prepper made a great video with 5 lessons people can learn from The Walking Dead. Some preppers complain that this show is unrealistic (of course it is, it’s a TV show about zombies!), but I don’t really care whether it’s realistic. It’s meant to be entertaining, not educational. And […]

Surviving Zombies

This week Mike and I have a little fun surviving zombies. We are both huge fan of Halloween and Zombies. Zombies are partially the reason I got into survival in the first place.

We have had a long time to figure out the ideal way to survive a Zombie Apocalypse. The tools and resources you will need to live it out. Our take is a bit different than most.

I feel that the only way to survive zombies is with community. Without a tight knit diverse community you cannot hope to survive zombies. You can’t be both farmer, soldier and surgeon, cook, mechanic and whatever else you need. Having members that are better suited to specific tasks is how you will be surviving zombies.

We talk about all that and more.
